Question about uploading the Map of Fourth Creek Congregation from the NC Archives

Is the map of the Fourth Creek Congregation at https://dc.lib.unc.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ncmaps/id/118 ok to upload in Wikimedia Commons?

The NC Archives web site shows the following restrictions: This item is presented courtesy of the State Archives of North Carolina, for research and educational purposes. Prior permission from the State Archives is required for any commercial use.

I would like to use it on the Wikipedia page Fourth Creek Congregation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by G. Moore (talk • contribs) 19:07, 4 February 2019‎ (UTC)

  • @G. Moore: Signing your posts on talk pages is required by Commons:Signatures policy. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). Due to that need for permission for commercial use, we cannot accept that file here on Wikimedia Commons because such restrictions are prohibited for our files per COM:L. We don't allow Fair Use here, but if you want to use the file on English Wikipedia, please read WP:F.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 21:07, 4 February 2019 (UTC)

Is it possible to upload a roller hockey club logo? Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jaucamp (talk • contribs) 13:07, 6 February 2019 (UTC)

@Jaucamp: It depends on the complexity of the logo. Would you please provide the source link, and the country of origin to me, in order to determine whether the logo exceeds the threshold of originality? Thank you.

It's an old logo that I've "cleaned" a little bit and is in my computer — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jaucamp (talk • contribs) 15:19, 6 February 2019 (UTC)

@Jaucamp: What club is it? Do you searched for relevant Wikipedia pages for any repeated fair use file pages? By the way, please sign your comments by adding ~~~~ after your comments, thank you.

There's not any information about the club (King's Lynn Roller Hockey Club) on the Wikipedia Jaucamp (talk) 15:50, 6 February 2019 (UTC)

@Jaucamp: I am in China now, so I cannot really search for the logo. It seems that the logo is from the United Kingdom, and you should ensure that the club itself satisfies the notability requirement by English Wikipedia, otherwise the file may be deleted for having inefficient educational value. As a personal suggestion, you are advised not to upload the file required, as the threshold of originality of the UK is notoriously very low, for example this file seems to be an example of Template:PD-text logo, but is still copyrighted in the United Kingdoms. Should you have more problems, please feel free to ask me, thank you.

Question regarding UK Copyright

Hello, I would like to upload a photograph published in 1939. It is a photograph from a postcard and cigarette card, and the photographer itself is unknown but the photograph appears to be released through MGM. Would this fall under {{PD-UK-unknown}}? I've done a fairly extensive search for a proper photographer, looking through a reverse Google Image source and various era-related archival sites to see a photographer is listed. None could be found. DanielleTH (talk) 21:58, 31 January 2019 (UTC)

How do I delete an existing file

I uploaded earlier today and replace it with one with better resolution and a different caption Maclachlan Window (Top Panels) Old Library University of Aberdeen Ray Oaks (talk) 17:35, 1 February 2019 (UTC)

@Ray Oaks: There are several possible answers to this. If the new file is an improved version of the existing one, you can just upload it as a new version using the "Upload a new version of this file" link in the "File history" section of File:Maclachlan Window (Top Panels) Old Library University of Aberdeen.jpg. See Commons:Overwriting files for details of what might be a minor change. You can then update the caption using the pencil icon in the "Captions" box. If your new version is substantially different (e.g. it's a different photo of the same window), you should upload it separately using Special:UploadWizard under a different name. Then you can edit File:Maclachlan Window (Top Panels) Old Library University of Aberdeen.jpg using the "Edit" link at the top of the page and add {{SD|G7}} to request its deletion. See Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion#G7 for information about the speedy deletion process. --bjh21 (talk) 17:46, 1 February 2019 (UTC)

  • Wording the English more clearly: the user is asking whether images of items that are considered in the Mexican cultural patrimony are OK for our usual free licenses that allow commercial use, or whether Mexican government restrictions on the commercialization of that patrimony mean we'd actually need some sort grant of permission from the Mexican government. - Jmabel ! talk 20:50, 1 February 2019 (UTC)

I would like to transform two raster images into SVG images. The graphics is not a problem, but the raster images contain Chinese characters which I am unable to read (at least, not all of them). The two images are the following:

Thank you for any help!

And another question: when you have an image file in two versions, traditional Chinese, and simplified Chinese: is it possible to integrate one of these two in a text depending on the user language preferences of the user?

1. http://joxi.ru/RmzLyj5i0BexkA
2. http://joxi.ru/EA43Y01uw7ElW2
Wiki.

-Ksenijaua-Ksenijaua (talk) 23:37, 2 February 2019 (UTC)

--Aeroid (talk) 13:39, 2 February 2019 (UTC)

@Aeroid: We use "in" for things strictly hierarchically "in" other things, rather than "of". See for example Category:Streets in London vs. Category:People of London.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:28, 2 February 2019 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: thanks. Do you mean strictly hierarchically "in", as being exatly one level below, and not multiply levels below? I'm just seeing used a little different like inside Category:States by country vs Category:Municipalities by country.--Aeroid (talk) 14:40, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
@Aeroid: Municipalities by country could become enormously crowded, especially in densely populated countries. I live in a building, in a complex, in a village, in a municipality, in a county, in a state, in a country, on a planet, in a system, in a galaxy, in a universe... I also live in a ZIP Code, multiple overlaid Area Codes, a Numbering Plan, a Country Code, a Parish, A Diocese, an Archdiocese, a moment, a second, an hour, a day, a week, a month, a quarter, a year, a decade, a century, a millennium, a Market, and untold Sales Regions. However, some compression is allowed in naming.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:57, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: To make the a little clearer: Inside Category:States by country I see mostly the use of "States of xyz" (e.g. in there is no hierachical level between Germany and Bavaria. Whereas inside of Category:Municipalities by country I see mostly the the use of "Municipalities in xyz" (there are various levels of hierachy between a country and the municipality).--Aeroid (talk) 17:05, 4 February 2019 (UTC)

Dogster Magazine Cover

Hi there, hope all is well!

My name is Teresa and I work in the Art Department here at Belvoir Media Group. Our team has discussed updating one of our magazine titles (Dogsterhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogster) Wikipedia page since it has not been updated much since Dogster turned from a digital community into a magazine back in 2015, or since Dogster changed ownership to us in 2017. With that being said, we are trying to do some much-needed updates, and have some questions. I'm not too familiar with editing on Wikipedia, so if someone can be of help, I'd greatly appreciate it!

I'm trying to update our page to include a photo of our magazine cover. I do notice that it keeps getting deleted for copyright reasons, however, I see that many other magazines somehow have their covers on their page (including our former title Dog Fancy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog_Fancy). Is there anything you need from us to allow this to be posted on our Wiki page? We'll also be updating our Wiki page for our sister publication Catster (formerly Cat Fancy) sometime in the near future and would like to include our cover there as well. Please let me know if you need some sort of documentation or what not so that we can include our covers on our pages. Thanks so much!

Updating a Certain Image

Hello. I've noticed that the .png version of the file "File: World in 2000 BC.svg", is not as up to date as its .svg version. The reason I say this is because, unlike the .svg version, the .png version depicts the Aspero Culture instead of the Norte Chico civilization. I would contact the original creator, or past editors, but their accounts currently seem quite dormant. I would like to make this quick and easy update to this image, but I can't seem to figure out how. Is there any way that I can do this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by GreenMountainGaurd88 (talk • contribs) 00:25, 5 February 2019 (UTC)

Is there any point in maintaining the PNG version? The thumbnail generator will give PNGs directly from File:World in 2000 BC.svg. --ghouston (talk) 01:03, 5 February 2019 (UTC)
Well, the problem is that the svg version of the map is actually not to the same scale as the png version, or of any of the other maps in the series (which are all PNGs and to the same scale as the png version of the map). For example, compare the png preview of World in 2000 BC.svg to the png preview of World in 1000 BC.png. The coast lines are also much more smooth in the svg version than in all of the other maps. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GreenMountainGaurd88 (talk • contribs) 03:20, 5 February 2019 (UTC)

The page URL was: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_DiLella

That page was deleted for a variety of reasons. Unless you can come up with content backed by verifiable reliable sources that demonstrates the subject's notability without duplicating content from http://americantheatrewing.org/biography/detail/frank_dilella or http://playbillder.com/show/vip/Camp_Broadway/1999/The_Roger_Rees_Awards_for_Excellence_in_Student_Performance_46463/page/16 you will be out of luck. The reason is simple, Mr. DiLella provided the biography text to me (to post on his behalf) and he also provided it to the other websites you point out. As a public figure, he has a bio saved on his computer that he sends to people when he's making an appearance.

Jamesdonegan (talk) 20:00, 5 February 2019 (UTC)

As an addendum: when the same can be said of the photo, which was also flagged for deletion. It is a publicity photo to which Mr. DiLella has rights to use whenever and wherever he chooses. That is why it appears other places. It was also flagged for appearing the Facebook page of the photographer who took it, but that photographer (whom I'm happy to credit) took the photo for hire and has released the rights to Mr. DiLella for his own promotional purposes.

@Shayzam: When you use the upload wizard you will be asked for a category during the upload process, at the same point when you specify the license and author of the photo Gbawden (talk) 09:36, 5 February 2019 (UTC)

Why this image does not appear in full

The image File:Avoided-crossing.svg has the label zc in the horizontal axis, the label is present in the image but not visible in full when displayed in an article. See w:en:Landau–Zener formula. Why is that? --MaoGo (talk) 14:15, 5 February 2019 (UTC)

@MaoGo: I don't speak enough SVG to understand what exactly was broken, but I think I've fixed it. If you still get the broken old version: Please purge your browser’s cache. (You only need to do it once.)

Internet Explorer: press Ctrl+F5, Firefox: hold down  Shift while clicking Reload (or press Ctrl+F5 or Ctrl+ Shift+R), Opera/Konqueror: press F5, Safari: hold down  Shift+alt while clicking Reload, Chrome: hold down  Shift while clicking Reload

Query about copyright in sculptures and models

File:ILA 2018, Schönefeld (1X7A5246).jpg has been added as the photographers own work, however I think the copyright in the model is being violated. https://www.wipo.int/export/sites/www/sme/en/documents/pdf/ip_photography.pdf Stgpcm (talk) 19:21, 5 February 2019 (UTC)

Is not it utilitarian? Ruslik (talk) 20:34, 5 February 2019 (UTC)
I have no idea what that means, Ruslik - other than "it serves a purpose". There may well be good reasons to use these non-free images, but no justification of such has been made. It appears to me that Matti Blume has been taking photographs of copyright work, and uploading those photographs to Commons and erroneously marking them as "Own Work" - However, it may b e that this is accepted usage on Commons, which is why I'm asking -- I have some photographs I originally took for personal use of other's work that I have previously not uploaded as I thought it would be a violation, so clarity on this issue would be helpful. Is this the right place to ask? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stgpcm (talk • contribs) 21:42, 5 February 2019 (UTC)
For what it's worth, a similar Boeing aircraft model in Seattle's Museum of History and Industry was definitely deleted a while back on the basis that the model would be copyrighted. - Jmabel ! talk 00:57, 6 February 2019 (UTC)

Using derivativeFX

I just tried uploading an edited version of File:Monument CharlesCutcliffe Died1670 SwimbridgeChurch.xcf using derivativeFX (https://tools.wmflabs.org/derivative/deri1.php). I filled in all the fields and everything apparently went well, but the result at File:Monument CharlesCutcliffe Died1670 SwimbridgeChurch edited.jpg is obviously faulty. What went wrong? Smalljim (talk) 17:04, 11 February 2019 (UTC)

What exactly is faulty? Ruslik (talk) 20:39, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
No description or licence copied, apparently, let alone the derivativeFX entry including a link to the original file. (It’s been years since I used dFX; it was N/S for quite a while and I haven’t tried it since its revival.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 20:48, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
Thanks. I tried again while documenting what happened. The problem was caused by my browser stopping a "potential cross-site scripting (XSS) attempt". I've copied the detail across from the second (not entirely successful) upload attempt, and flagged that one for speedy deletion. Smalljim (talk) 12:19, 12 February 2019 (UTC)

Why is File:Glühlampe explodiert.jpg is allowed when it's CC: BY-NC-ND?

This section was archived on a request by: Thammarith (talk) 09:46, 12 February 2019 (UTC)

Hi, I'm new to WikiCommons and learning about allowed licences. As far as I know, NC, ND are not allowed in WikiCommons, but I came across this image, File:Glühlampe explodiert.jpg, which has CC:BY-NC-ND licence. Why is it allowed? Is it with the fact that it's one of the 2012's photos of the year?

Thanks! --Thammarith (talk) 03:24, 12 February 2019 (UTC)

@Thammarith: no, it also has an Art Libre licence, which qualifies as free here. Where there are multiple licences, reusers can choose whichever they prefer. (They are also free to negotiate with the copyright owner for special permissions.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 03:36, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
Or to put it a different way: it's not that any licenses are banned, it's that you are required to offer at least one license that is sufficiently free to meet the requirements in Commons:Scope. - Jmabel ! talk 04:22, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
@Jmabel: how Commons:Scope is in scope topical? Incnis Mrsi (talk) 08:49, 12 February 2019 (UTC)

Need help with an SVG file

I tried changing the proportions of File:Flag of the Federal Republic of Southern Cameroons.svg from the arbitrary 585 × 360 to the standard 3:2. This is my first time editing an SVG file, and while it looks alright in the online editing software I'm using, I always end up with a lot of empty space surrounding the image. Please send an email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org (English) or permissions-de@wikimedia.org (German) according to the instructions of the page. If the file is deleted, please do not attempt to recreate the file, as our OTRS volunteers will restore upon receiving the permission email. Please also send an email to info-commons@wikimedia.org to prove your account is not merely a spam account and a violation of COM:IU, as user names should not use organization or company names according to COM:UP generally, just similar to the official account used by ex-Mexican president. @Vereinigung der Bayerischen Wirtschaft (vbw): For the particular image, it may be quicker if you can change the press release to indicate relevant free the license, (though the thing about clearing up the status of the account is also a good idea). Then you can go directly to COM:UR and request undeletion now that the license is stated at the source. - Jmabel ! talk 17:47, 6 February 2019 (UTC)

Felisberto Hernandez photo

Hello!

I'm trying to update the wikipedia page of my great grandfather, Uruguayan pianist and writer Felisberto Hernandez. The photo that was used when the person created his page was removed because it was unsourced. How does one source an image? I don't have any personal photos of him. Do I need to get some from my family or can I use the ones I like most online if I source/cite them properly?

Thanks for your time!

  • @El diconc: You need to know who owns the copyright of the photo. With rare exceptions, that would be the photographer or the heir to the photographer's intellectual property. The easiest thing is for that person to create an an account and (if they are the photographer) use {{Own work}}. If it's an heir or if someone else needs to do the upload it gets a bit trickier, especially if the uploader is not the heir. Once you can identify what the situation is in these respects (also, whether or not the photo in question is already published), ask further here and someone can be more specific as to what needs to happen. - Jmabel ! talk 17:57, 6 February 2019 (UTC)

Hey Mephasto. You need to send permission according to the instructions at COM:CONSENT. Once you do that, and the email is answered, the file will be undeleted and may be used on the article. Keep in mind that the individuals who answer these emails are volunteers, and there is a significant backlog, so it may take some time. GMGtalk 22:56, 6 February 2019 (UTC)

  • Two ways to get around this sort of thing in the future:
    • You can send a similar email indicating that User:Mephasto is, in general, authorized to grant licenses on images whose copyrights are owned by your company, and the OTRS people will (eventually) give you a reusable template that can be used on such uploads in the future.
    • You can indicate the relevant free license on your company's own website. Then when you upload here, you can indicate the appropriate page on that site as the source, so anyone can verify the license, not just a special volunteer dealing with email. - Jmabel ! talk 00:36, 7 February 2019 (UTC)

Hello GoldenGo-Far. If you have a more up to date photo for which you own the copyright, usually meaning that either you took the photo yourself, or you paid a photographer to take it under a contractual agreement that you, and not the photographer would own the copyright, then you can release the photo under a free license that is usable on Wikipedia by following the instructions at COM:CONSENT. • I presume this is about en:Beth Taylor and File:Taylor-Beth-2009-Wiki-Heads.jpg.
  • Basically, the simplest thing to do would be:
    1. Have someone take a photo of you that you would be happier with.
    2. If they don't already have an account here, have them open one.
    3. They can then upload that photo as their own work, in the usual manner for Commons. (If they are a beginner, Special:UploadWizard would probably be easiest. If they are more experienced, they can do whatever they usually do.)
    4. Then you can go to the Wikipedia article, replace 'Taylor-Beth-2009-Wiki-Heads.jpg' with the name of the new photo, and change the caption accordingly.
  • If you want to use an existing photo that has already been published, it gets a little more complicated: the copyright holder would need to go through the process described at COM:OTRS to indicate that they are giving a particular free license for their existing photo; otherwise the process is the same. - Jmabel ! talk 01:19, 8 February 2019 (UTC)

"No inkscape" = Copyright problems on public domain work??

Hello,

sorry if this is a stupid question, but I need to mark a few areas on this map

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BlankMap-World6,_compact.svg

"This file is saved in human-editable plain text format. Any editing of the image or creation of any derivative work should be performed using a text editor. Please do not upload edits saved or exported with Inkscape or similar vector graphics editors."

This image is in the public domain. Does this message mean I am still not allowed to use Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop to mark areas on it? —Preceding unsigned comment was added by 46.5.136.166 (talk) 10:26, 8 February 2019 (UTC)

  • Some corporate logos are eligible for copyright, others are not (too simple or too old). Commons will host only those that are not eligible for copyright or (this is rare) where the owner of the copyright has provided an appropriate free license. - Jmabel ! talk 03:15, 10 February 2019 (UTC)

disputed file rename

I recently uploaded some files, and someone else requested a rename for them, which went through without my seeing it. I find the new names problematic and raised them on the mover's page, but have not heard back. How should I proceed? HLHJ (talk) 23:20, 9 February 2019 (UTC)

Old 1940 picture

I have a 1940 B & W picture of my grandfather with other 50 members of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Mexico, D.F., Mexico

The picture is beginning to fade. It has no seal in the back or any information, so the photographer is unknown,

He was a minister of that early church.

Could I post this picture? certainly I cannot claim it is mine, I would have to say it is not my work.

It has historical value for that church, they started with a small group of 500 people in 1917, by now they have half a million believers in the Mexican Republic.

Sincerely,

Sergio Rodriguez semaforo@sbcglobal.net — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sergio V. Rodriguez (talk • contribs) 04:17, 10 February 2019 (UTC)

  • There's no problem about the historical value, the question would be whether the image is in the public domain (since clearly, if it is not in the public domain then we have no chance of getting the copyright-holder's permission. Mexican copyright law is pretty complicated because they've made changes over time, and apparently particularly so with reference to anonymous works. @Clindberg: , do you have thoughts on this, or know who we'd want to ask? - Jmabel ! talk 05:31, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
    • Oof. There are lots of fuzzy parts I'm sure, but if copies were distributed to the 50 people in the photo, that could amount to publication. Unless it was registered in Mexico within three years of that, it became PD, but I know of no way to verify that. On the other hand, the 1982 law gave an anonymous term of 50 years from publication, which for a 1940 publication would have expired before Mexican terms were extended again, and would also avoid the URAA, if it even was still under copyright in 1982. So... {{PD-anon-50}} and {{PD-1996}} maybe ? Carl Lindberg (talk) 21:07, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
    • @Sergio V. Rodriguez: As Carl and I both said, this is a tricky one. I'd suggest that you use both {{PD-anon-50}} and {{PD-1996}}, but please don't be offended if others were later to decide that this raises too many issues to keep. If you want me to look over your work after you upload, feel free to ping me to have a look. - Jmabel ! talk 23:15, 10 February 2019 (UTC)

Marca inregistrata

Buna ziua, Am o intrebare si sper sa o fi adresat in locul corect. Va multumesc pentru ajutor, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Kobudo_Ken.gif — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kobudo Ken (talk • contribs) 12:16, 11 February 2019 (UTC)

Registered trademark Hello, I have a question and I hope it has been addressed in the right place. Searching for my "Kobudo Ken" brand on google I found reference to it on Wikipedia at Commons being defined (if I did not misunderstand it) as being freely usable. I must state that this image is protected / registered with OSIM and now my question: I have to specify somewhere or do some special action because I do not want my logo to be used by third parties. Thanks for help,

How old is the magazine? Ruslik (talk) 20:40, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
Judging by we are talking about something recent but not current (1995—2011)
These covers will all be copyrighted, so for Commons to host them, we would need permission from the copyright-holder. The range of licenses would be the same as for any other image, but only the person who owns the copyright can provide such a license.
Several wikipedias have policies to allow certain non-free content uploaded directly to that Wikipedia (never to Commons). I don't know ru-wiki's policies. They don't seem to have equivalent pages to en:Wikipedia:Non-free content nor en:Template:Non-free use rationale, so I suspect they may not be one of the wikipedias that accommodate this. Can someone more familiar with ru-wiki policies weigh in? Or maybe you can ask about this at ru:Википедия:Форум. - Jmabel ! talk 00:51, 12 February 2019 (UTC)

FlickreviewR 2 for CC0 1.0 public domain images on Flickr

Hello, I asked an author on Flickr Mail if I can transfer his image to Commons, and he kindly agreed and changed the license of that image to CC0 1.0 Universal (CC0 1.0) Public Domain Dedication. Yet when I just upoaded the image, there were only the CC-BY and CC-BY-SA options for Flickr images, and thus I chose the {{Cc-zero}} option. But is there now some bot like the FlickreviewR 2 that can confirm that the image is available on Flickr under that license, or can some human reviewer confirm the license? Thanks, --Rio65trio (talk) 00:11, 12 February 2019 (UTC)

Giving file mover rights

Can an admin give file mover rights at their discretion or do they have to nominate them and follow the process? Gbawden (talk) 07:19, 12 February 2019 (UTC)

There is nothing I'm aware of forbidding unilateral vetting and granting of user rights that do not require community approval (e.g., sysop, translation admin, license reviewer). Other projects certainly do this fairly regularly when there is a demonstrated need and verifiable competence. GMGtalk 11:45, 12 February 2019 (UTC)

Foto uploaden

May I upload a photo of the Regional Archive of Dordrecht on commons? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ezrahiet (talk • contribs)

Hey Ezrahiet. To upload any file you need to either 1) own the intellectual property rights to the media so that you can release it under a free license (usually meaning you took the picture yourself), 2) have the verifiable permission of the copyright holder to do so, or 3) have some rationale for why the media is in the public domain (usually because it is very old). If one of these apply, then you should be able to upload it here. If one of these do not, then you most likely cannot. GMGtalk 11:48, 12 February 2019 (UTC)

Commons is a repository for images that can be used in all Wikipedias and other Wikimedia projects. However, you should not upload complete articles from newspapers, websites or magazines, nor should you create a new article about yourself at Wikipedia. If your work as a musician and teacher is notable, someone else will write about you sooner or later. Neither Wikipedia nor Commons are meant for advertising your work. This is Wikimedia Commons which is where you should store the images for your biography. However, we need a permission by email from the copyright holder for each of the photographs and the artwork depicted. Please see COM:OTRS for details. Once such a mail has been sent, you may upload the images here and tag each file page with a text string {{subst:OP}}.
As to the text part, please create a new article page Wikipedia. At the English Wikipedia, you should first read their policy about paid-contribution disclosure and a possible conflict of interest. Furthermore you need to provide reliable and independent references to verify your client's notability. Otherwise your article may not be accepted for lack of relevance. See also Wikipedia:Your first article. De728631 (talk) 19:43, 12 February 2019 (UTC)

@Tnthompson8: if this is about Commons:Deletion requests/File:Taylor Thompson.png (and its talk page), I very much doubt Getty sold you the entire rights to the photo or gave you permission to relicense it (give away)—that’s certainly far from their usual arrangements, which set strict limitations on the nature of the use and/or the amount of exposure. Please review the documents covering your agreement with them; if you are sure your rights include the ability to apply a free licence, you should send the proof to COM:OTRS. In general, any media that have been published elsewhere online without a visible free licence require (confidential) documentation of permissions, as our default assumption is that they’re non-free.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:27, 13 February 2019 (UTC)

You have tried your hand at Commons talk:Deletion requests/File:Taylor Thompson.png, the wrong place. Saving images

Sometimes it is not possible to save imgaes by right-clicking, you can only save the entire html-page, for instance this. Is there any way to circumvent the problem? (One possibility is to make a google-search and right-click the image among the search results, but the problem with this is that the image is scaled down to a much lower resolution.) --Jonund (talk) 09:08, 17 February 2019 (UTC)

@Jonund: Some webmasters don't want you to right click on their images and other content, so they have ways of asking the browser to trap right-click and other actions. Some browsers handle this differently than others. Sometimes, you can just click on an image or other content to get a larger version or more information, even if traps are in place. Tineye used to let us pick from the images it found on a webpage, but sadly it doesn't do that anymore. For instance, I had to switch browsers to find https://winners-master.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/styles/item_main/s3/205_1.jpg and interpolate to find https://winners-master.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/styles/item_main/s3/205_2.jpg.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:29, 17 February 2019 (UTC)

Request a list of tags commonly used by novice categorizers

I would like to see a list of the most important tags that a categorizer might use. For example, fair use, personality rights, copyvio, with an explanation of each one. Perhaps this list could be linked in the FAQ. Downtowngal (talk) 15:59, 12 February 2019 (UTC)

Hey Downtowngal. You may want to check out the list at Commons:Templates. GMGtalk 19:51, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
@Downtowngal: I would also recommend that you install some of the Gadgets to make your life a bit easier. Select them in Gadgets under preferences and they will appear in the left tool bar. For catergorization I recommend Cat a Lot and HotCat. For tagging I recommend VisualFileChange Gbawden (talk) 06:13, 13 February 2019 (UTC)
Thank you both for your responses. I am already using HotCat and Cat a Lot. I can't remember all the possible tags available and I don't think there is a list of the ones COMMONLY USED BY NOVICE CATEGORIZERS in one place. We want to encourage categorizers whose English is less than native. We cannot rely on IT-savvy English speakers only. Here is a draft of the page that I would like to see created. It should be easily accessible to novices:
Hello!
You want to help out Commons and categorize images.
Here is some information that you might want.
After you add categories, this is a good time to add additional information to the image/file.
Sometimes you will see an image/file that is a duplicate of another one. Or it is a photo of a copyrighted work. Or it has a watermark on it. Or it is of very bad visual quality. These problems should be referred to an administrator.
You can add the following “tags” to the image. (Insert one or more tags anywhere in the file when you edit it.)
These tags will send the image/file to a Wikimedia administrator, who will review your suggestion and make a decision.
bracket-bracket copyvio bracket-bracket Use this tag when you think that the image may be a copyright violation. See (internal link) for more information.
bracket-bracket duplicate bracket-bracket Use this tag when you know there is another image that is the same, by the same uploader. (Note: Sometimes images are uploaded intentionally in .jpg and .tif formats. Do NOT use this tag) See (internal link) for more information.
Etc. Bad quality Advertising Watermark Self promotion And a few others Downtowngal (talk) 17:51, 13 February 2019 (UTC)

What to classify a mugshot as when publishing "source"

Hello, I'm trying to figure out what to classify a mugshot as since it's public information released by governmental agencies. I don't want to say the work is mine, unless that's what I need to do? I'm just trying to publish a simple mugshot. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TurboChargedChiliPepper (talk • contribs) 13:41, 13 February 2019 (UTC)

Hey TurboChargedChiliPepper. Just because information is publicly available does not mean that it is in the public domain and free of any restrictions related to intellectual property rights. Most government agencies do not release their works into the public domain, and in order to upload their work here on Commons, you have to demonstrate that this agency is one of those that explicitly do. GMGtalk 13:44, 13 February 2019 (UTC)

The mugshot has been published on numerous major media organizations, and the Sheriff's department that released the photo publicly releases the images. If the media organizations are using the photo, I would assume the sheriff's department does not have an issue with the photo being used publicly? Not sure what all is needed to see if this meets the standard. TurboChargedChiliPepper (talk) 13:47, 13 February 2019 (UTC)

Not necessarily TurboChargedChiliPepper. Media organizations regularly use copyrighted material under a claim of fair use. Some local projects like the English Wikipedia allow limited instances of fair use images, but Wikimedia Commons does not, and only allows media which is in the public domain or explicitly released under a free license. Error in video upload

@90Sh: Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons only allow patent-free file types to be used, so the only video formats that are supported are WebM and Ogg Theora (see Commons:File types#Video for more info). You will need to convert your video to one of those formats to upload it. Cheers, IagoQnsi (talk) 17:41, 13 February 2019 (UTC)

@Mileso~commonswiki: Blocking doesn't achieve anything but disabling your ability to make edits – your account would still be publicly visible. You don't have any edits (besides adding the above message) and the only other publicly visible attribute of your account is the registration date (06:38, 19 April 2015) – you're already about as anonymous as you can be. It's great that ELTON JOHN is performing at more places in Australia on his last tour BUT whereabouts in the Northern Territory is he playing? My husband used to do the lighting for his shows and I have been a big fan since being a teenager (40 years on now).

Please let us know the closest place to Darwin he will be playing as we would love to be a fan of his last tour?!

Thanks in advance

Easiest way to create a pie chart for use across more than one language Wikipedia?

Hello,

I created my first pie chart in en:Greenhouse_gas_emissions_by_Turkey#Sources and would like to put it into the equivalent Turkish article tr:Türkiye’den_sera_gazı_emisyonları#Kaynakça (obviously I would translate the words).

Is it possible to do that via Wikimedia Commons?

Category_talk:Pie_charts#Tips_for_creating_pie_charts suggests using the graphs function, which is what I used on English Wikipedia as you can see, but I am having trouble seeing how to do that here in commons.

If that is not possible given that I have no graphics skills have you any suggestions please? Chidgk1 (talk) 14:45, 14 February 2019 (UTC)

@Chidgk1: It appears en:Template:Graph:Chart has no equivalent at Turkish Wikipedia. Sorry, but you would have to wait until that situation changes. If you just want that one chart, you could make it in preview on enwiki with Turkish labels, save the resulting file like this, and upload it here.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:59, 14 February 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for your quick reply. Also I just noticed that I cannot see my charts on the wikizero page whether or not I have my vpn on. So due to the the block here it seems it would be best to upload a chart to Wikimedia Commons. So I will use your cunning workaround. Chidgk1 (talk) 16:40, 14 February 2019 (UTC)

Why my file does not show up on the internet.

Hi, I have written an article about an organization in my school, and it has been up here since Oct 2018. I am wondering how to make the article visible on Wikipedia or on the internet. Is there any way to do that? I am new here, so I do not know much. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Salman Squared (talk • contribs) 01:49, 15 February 2019 (UTC)

  • It would help a lot to have a URL (we have no way to guess what "up here" means).
  • You are asking on Wikimedia Commons, and Wikimedia Commons doesn't have articles.
  • Typically, an organization within a school would not be notable enough to merit a Wikipedia article, although there are probably a few exceptions to that. - Jmabel ! talk 02:17, 15 February 2019 (UTC)

File improperly uploaded with wrong permission by unauthorized party, Authors now ready to provide corrected image under proper license.

Hello all, it's been too long. I'm a former admin here but so rusty that I find myself at the help desk. Situation is that this image File:Raptor_Engine_Unofficial_Combustion_Scheme.png was taken from nasaspaceflight.com (NSF) by a one edit user and uploaded to commons with CC0. The svg form of the file is a collaboration between two NSF users. The authors are not willing to go full public domain but are amenable to an appropriate CC (probably By-SA) license that allows free use but protects their rights. I'm an admin at NSF (and also at en:wp, still but so rusty) that got asked to assist.. Given that the user didn't have permission but we have a replacement, do we need to call for deletion and then recreate? or can we just upload a new version properly licensed? Deleting the file without immediate replacement would disrupt both en:wp and ru:wp both of which use the image in an article. My instinct is just to upload and fix the license... Am I off base? Do we need a revision delete of the older version with the too permissive license? Thanks. ++Lar: t/c 06:37, 13 February 2019 (UTC)

@Lar: Welcome back. If I were you, I would follow my instincts and ask to have the older version hidden.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 07:02, 13 February 2019 (UTC)
OK, then I think the best course is have the pmg author upload a new version of the png, properly licensed. Then have the svg author upload the svg, throw an obsolete template on the png, edit the two articles that use it to switch to the svg version... finally ask for the revision delete on the original png version (well that could come sooner I guess, as soon as the new version is there). I just have to remember or figure out where to ask for that... but there's no rush. Well maybe kind of, because every day that stolen CC0 image is out there... Fly in the ointment is that neither of the authors is a user here and would need shepherding. I could do it for them but would have to file something with OTRS to cover the permissions... Will OTRS take NSF messages or posts as sufficient documentation? Everyone is operating under userids rather than real names there. ++Lar: t/c 07:30, 13 February 2019 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: and @Huntster: Update: almost all sorted. The svg author HVM registered for an account, and uploaded the svg as File:Raptor_Engine_Unofficial_Combustion_Scheme.svg. Huntster deleted the png entirely so I don't think a revdel is needed. A statement of permission was given on NSF in this post in standard format by HVM... Although Pbroks13 tagged it with npd I modified the file info box to link the post, and removed the npd. I think we're sorted. I urged HVM to also mail the permissions email. If they do I'll ask someone with OTRS permissions to get me the ticket number (I had that long ago but I think it's lapsed?). So far so good ++Lar: t/c 15:22, 15 February 2019 (UTC)

Just to clarify: with the exception of a few whitelisted sites, the only way to upload "from a site" to Commons is to download from that site to your own machine, then upload to Commons. You probably can do that here as readily as anyone else; if you tried that and couldn't, it would be worth knowing just what didn't work.
That said: if someone wants to take on uploading the image on Doldenhonigkönig's behalf, it is certainly in scope & I don't see any issues with it or any reason it would present particular technical difficulties. It seems safe to presume that there are no copyright issues: the site says that all copyrighted photos on the site should be identified as such, and this has no such indication. - Jmabel ! talk 02:14, 15 February 2019 (UTC)

How to have an image deleted

Hello! I’m new to Wikimedia commons so I wasn’t sure where to go with this question. I’ve noticed a a number of images uploaded and used in Wikipedia articles that may be purely intended as a means of self-promotion by a person who advertises the same drawings for sale off-Wikipedia. What is the proper avenue to address this concern? Thanks! Garthriver (talk) 04:42, 15 February 2019 (UTC)

@Jmabel: please see user:Apokryltaros and [2]. This is not the only website. At Amazon, he calls himself “Wikipedia illustrator,” to suggest notability and authority. I’m concerned that this may represent a misuse of Wikipedia for financial incentive. Garthriver (talk) 05:43, 15 February 2019 (UTC)
@Jmabel: , Garthriver is trying to harass me and expunge my art from Wikipedia.--Mr Fink (talk) 11:53, 15 February 2019 (UTC)
The images appear to be educationally useful on their face and are currently used more than 3,000 times. If the creator wants to sell prints on Amazon then that's their personal business, and doesn't really have anything to do with Wikipedia or Commons. So long as the images are appropriately licensed, you can sell them on Amazon too if you like. GMGtalk 13:57, 15 February 2019 (UTC)
@Garthriver: These seem like perfectly useful uploads. I see nothing at all wrong with someone free-licensing high-quality work and making it available to us. - Jmabel ! talk 16:52, 15 February 2019 (UTC)

Mexico 68 Olympic Games pictures

Two weeks ago I uploaded 25 beautiful pictures of the opening and closing ceremonies for the Mexico 68 Olympics.

I was looking at the Mexico 68 article on Wikipedia en Espanhol, some of the pictures could be placed here.

Is someone in Wikimedia Commons going to review the pictures I uploaded and determine which can be placed on the article, or do I have to upload them myself? the article can use at least 10 of them.

Is there a Tutor for uploading things on Wikipedia en Espanhol?

Thanks.

@Jontel: Wikimedia Commons is only for freely-licensed works, so that image would not be acceptable here. It's possible that you could upload it to Wikipedia and use it under fair use in an article that is related to the news story. However, Wikipedia is very strict about what it allows as fair use, and requires that you provide a rationale as to why it meets Wikipedia's fair use policies. I recommend you use the File Upload Wizard which will walk you through the process of making this rationale. Cheers, IagoQnsi (talk) 16:50, 15 February 2019 (UTC)

Photo of Maxim Amelin

Hello,

I posted a photo of contemporary Russian poet Maxim Amelin for the English Wikipedia page I'm drafting about him. He supplied me with a photo, which I tried to post in an allowable way:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Maxim_Amelin_by_Yulia_Radilovskaya.jpg

but I got a message saying I didn't do copyright correctly for the photo.

Now the author of the photo (Yulia Radilovskaya) tells me that she has gone in and confirmed that she gives permission for the image to be used, duplicated, etc., but I don't know how to check this.

Can someone confirm that the photo is allowable and I may now post it to my draft page? Or explain to me how I can tell that it is now allowable?

Thank you for any help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Twentystokes (talk • contribs) 16:01, 15 February 2019 (UTC)

Logo Update

Hello, I need to upload my companies logo to our page (Blue Point Brewing Company), but I cannot. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jack.slattery (talk • contribs) 16:25, 15 February 2019 (UTC)

@Jack.slattery: Hi Jack. You will want to upload this directly to Wikipedia instead of here on Wikimedia Commons, since a logo is a non-free copyrighted work and Commons only allows free license works. I recommend you use the File Upload Wizard which will walk you through the license information. When it asks for source and licensing information, you'll want to select "This is a copyrighted, non-free work, but I believe it is Fair Use.", and then complete the remainder of the form. Logo files of the same nature get different treatment by Wikimedia vs Wikipedia

Hi, I am wondering why these two different logo files are https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:VTKlogo.png and https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:InsightToolkitLogo.jpg given a different treatment. The files are publicly downloadabale, come from the same author and company, and the Wikimedia commons is consistently marking the InsightToolkitLogo.jpg file for deletion, whereas the English Wikipedia detects the VTKlogo.png file as being a logo having a copyright, and warning about its restrictions, without marking it for deletion.

Is there any way for the InsightToolkitLogo.jpg file to receive the same treatment as the VTKlogo.png file?

At the same time, I'd like the VTKlogo, png file be available for other Wikipedia languages, and consistently use the same version. Does this mean it should be deleted from Wikipedia and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons? Even in that case, the InsightToolkitLogo.jpg seems not to be available across languages.

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jhlegarreta (talk • contribs) 16:56, 10 February 2019 (UTC)

Two issues are at play here:
  • One of them is eligible for copyright and the other is not. Simple typography => ineligible for copyright => public domain => may be on Commons. Add a snake and it's no longer simple typography, and then we'd need a license from the holder of the copyright for the image.
  • English-language Wikipedia vs. Commons: the English-language Wikipedia makes certain allowances for non-free low-resolution images that are needed to illustrate an article. Commons is absolutely restricted to public domain and free-licensed images.
- Jmabel ! talk 18:06, 10 February 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for the early answer User:Jmabel.

Thanks for illustrating why Wikipedia and Commons behave differently. I'll try to get the license from the holder of the copyright of the image so that it can be available in Commons.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but if a file is hosted in Commons, the same file should be available to any language Wikipedia page, right?

License

How does the Korean Open Government License Type I differ from other similar copyleft licenses such as CC BY-SA 4.0?Benjaminikuta (talk) 13:54, 15 February 2019 (UTC)

@Benjaminikuta: Thank you for your question. Well, in my humble opinion, the difference is something similar to Template:Cc-by-sa-4.0 and Template:Cc-by-sa-3.0. I would said that the difference between Template:KOGL and other CC-attribution licenses is that the former one can only be applied on certain South Korean governmental works, while the latter one can be applied on more works, including personal, organizational and governmental works (The Russian government loves CC licenses). All in all, you should use the license according to the original description page of the file, thank you.
Thank you for your reply. Could you be more specific about the difference between them? I'm just as unfamiliar with the difference between 3.0 and 4.0. And what advantage would it give for the government to use it, over CC? Benjamin (talk) 20:31, 16 February 2019 (UTC)

@Marco De Angelis 1962: Thank you for your inquiry. Please do not upload such images to Wikimedia Commons, as such images mentioned by you are in fact derivative works of copyrighted works. yellow-breasted boatbill

If there are any bird experts around, I could use a second opinion. At Category:Machaerirhynchidae of Australia, the first two shots (mine) don't quite look like the birds in the other shots, and the birds in the other shots don't look like the yellow-breasted boatbill in the book I use, The Slater Field Guide to Australian Birds. The birds in those shots have an almost spherical body, whereas the birds in the book have a more elongated body. Soviet poster collection from 1969

I need some advice about copyright requirements with respect to Soviet-era posters. I'm inquiring about a poster collection (подборка плаклатов) of 30 or so printed posters, held in the Prelinger Library. The colophon and all the posters have been digitized by the library, and I have access to them with their permission, and would like to upload them to Commons. From my elementary Russian, I can see that the collection was compiled by A.S. Budyak, printed in Leningrad on May 5, 1969 in a run of 100,000 copies, and is entitled "Lenin and now very much alive" (Ленин и теперь живее всех живых).

I don't see a specific copyright symbol or notice in the colophon, so perhaps failing such a notice, it's not under copyright and can be uploaded now? If the 50-year term of post-Soviet copyright law applies, then I imagine it will be available on May 5 this year, but I have no expertise in this subject, and need help. I can upload the colophon, if that would help.

This came about as a result of the Prelinger Wikithon on this date. Pinging @Rickprelinger, M.S.Prelinger, Dreamyshade, Nikikana, and Ymblanter: . Mathglot (talk) 23:21, 17 February 2019 (UTC)

Checking the caption on one of the posters, it looks like Commons has that one already: this image is one of the posters in the collection, uploaded by somebody from this source. I wonder if that means we have all 30? In any case, I'd still like an explanation of the copyright concerns to consider, as the library may have more like this in their collection. Mathglot (talk) 23:56, 17 February 2019 (UTC)
Individually, you have to worry about the death of the author; if they died before 1946, they should be safe for both Russia and the US.--Prosfilaes (talk) 02:05, 18 February 2019 (UTC)
Indeed, Russia is effectively 74 years after the death (70 years + 4 years added if the author worked during World War II). This supercedes the 50 years policy and was made retroactive.--Ymblanter (talk) 16:20, 18 February 2019 (UTC)

Creating page/s to add to Wikipedia's 'List of South African women artists'

Hi! re my ongoing attempts to add page/s to this list (specifically on my mother, Nerine Desmond (1908–93).

Can someone @Wikipedia please try and explain to me HOW, on Wikipedia's 'List of South African artists' it is possible that a contemporary of hers, Gregoire Boonzaier (1909–2005), has a page, featuring images of several of his paintings which are all labelled as '[now] being in the public domain'. YET in the Permissions box on that page, NONE appear (to this layman) to comply with the stipulated requirements!

Cannot publish a caption

Hello. I am told that this:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St_Peter-in-Ely_organ.jpg

requires a caption.

Having ensured I am logged in to Wikipedia, I have endeavoured to add the following at that page by pressing "Add a caption"

One-manual organ by Hill and Son of London, Church of St Peter-in-Ely

This then brings up a small red dustbin, a red "Cancel" and a blue box saying "Publish changes".

However, when I click on the blue box absolutely nothing happens. The caption is not added or saved anywhere.

Please can you help?

Many thanks and regards.

Deletion log question

Yet another thing leading me to believe that this website is becoming less and less useful to its users all the time. I seem to remember being able to check if any files I uploaded have been deleted. I went to Special:Log, selected "All public logs" from the drop-down box, and entered "User:RadioKAOS" under target. It returns "No matching items in log", which shouldn't be correct as there was at least one instance of a file I uploaded being deleted in the past. What am I missing? I should note that I found exactly zero information in either the deletion policy or the entire help namespace instructing me on getting what I need from the deletion log.RadioKAOS (talk) 05:34, 19 February 2019 (UTC)

Okay, poking further, it appears that Special:ListFiles isn't displaying correctly and my fears that something was deleted are incorrect. I would still like to know if I'm working the log incorrectly, though.RadioKAOS (talk) 05:40, 19 February 2019 (UTC)

Uploaded picture has been mistakenly flagged as a copyright violation

Hello,

I am relatively new here so please bear with me. I recently uploaded a photo to add to a page and it was marked for speedy deletion due to a supposed copyright violation. As this photo is from a Facebook page, I was somewhat surprised.

The website listed for the copyright violation as the source is, itself, citing the photo as taken from a Facebook page and is thus open to fair use by any and all parties. I can provide a number of other websites which have done the same, as well as a link to the original Facebook post source to demonstrate this.

How do I appeal this? I tried reading through the guide but I don't think I understood it properly. Any advice would be greatly appreciated thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SaugaLaddie (talk • contribs) 17:32, 19 February 2019 (UTC)

@SaugaLaddie: You can dispute the claim by clicking the "Convert to DR" button on File:Iqra Khalid Picture.jpg. That will remove the speedy deletion tag from the file and instead create a full (and less speedy) deletion request. I suspect that the outcome may still be "delete" though. Commons only hosts media that are freely-licensed or in the public domain. Files that can only be used under "fair use" rules are not allowed on Commons. If the Facebook source explicitly provides a free licence, then you should add a link to that to the image description page, and correctly cite the source and author of the picture. I note that the image on CJN has a "Rawal TV" watermark (partly cropped off your version), which may help in sourcing it. --bjh21 (talk) 17:52, 19 February 2019 (UTC)

Picture of deceased horse

Hi! So I've been trying to upload a picture of a horse that's been deceased for over 40 years. I'm looking off this as an example, but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to do it, because this image is copyrighted. How am I supposed to submit the image into Wikipedia Commons? The horse has been dead for a while, so I'm sure that copyright won't be a problem, I'm just unsure how to put it up. Thanks so much! Horsegeek (talk) 21:58, 18 February 2019 (UTC)Horsegeek

See Commons:Licensing. If it's copyrighted, then the copyright holder needs to release it with a free license. Then it can be uploaded to Commons. --ghouston (talk) 23:22, 18 February 2019 (UTC)
Copyright belongs to the photographer (or their heirs and assigns); the death of the subject has nothing to do with it. - Jmabel ! talk 01:11, 19 February 2019 (UTC)
Jmabel, --ghouston, the owner is also presumably deceased. I've seen many images of horses uploaded because they are no longer around, under a copyright license. I'm still unsure of how to upload it to Commons because it doesn't exactly have a "license" on it. Horsegeek (talk) 01:19, 19 February 2019 (UTC)Horsegeek
  1. "seen many images of horses uploaded": Uploaded to where? Plenty of people upload stuff on the basis that they probably won't get sued. Commons doesn't work that way.
  2. "owner is also presumably deceased": then, assuming the copyright is intact, you have a difficult problem to obtain a license, because you would have to find out who inherited their intellectual property rights.

@Horsegeek: note that your example above is not hosted here, but directly on enWP, where non-free content is allowed under certain conditions (see the NFCC links beside each point in the rationale on that page).—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:32, 21 February 2019 (UTC)

The file is published under public domain for anyone to use on the website of the General Directorate of Meteorology of the Turkish government. I don't want the file to get deleted so can you guide me to the correct license option. I don't think Wikipedia being banned in Turkey is relevant. :). Thanks beforehand.

Where does it say that the image is published as public domain? I can only find "Her Hakkı Saklıdır", which translates to "All rights reserved". --rimshottalk 21:16, 19 February 2019 (UTC)

Charging elephant

A few days ago I uploaded this (portrait) image from Flickr and it turned up in Commons in landscape mode and "stretched". But, hold on, not always. Display it in other resolutions, not the default, and it reverts to portrait. How can I fix this? Thanks, Eddaido (talk) 08:35, 20 February 2019 (UTC)

Logo without copyright Hello, I uploaded the logo of the FFDYS on my page Wikipedia: https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Nathalie_Groh/Brouillon I thought recovering info but it was filed at the INPI there is years and it takes time ... I found that I could not access my page to edit it. Is it because of this logo that has no copyright? If so, can you delete it and add it only if I have the copyright? Thank you for your help, Yours sincerely, Nathalie GROH - President of the FFDYS

@Nathalie Groh: C'était Fichier:Logo ffdys Wikipedia 120px.png.
This was File:Logo ffdys Wikipedia 120px.png. This image has appeared on the Internet without a free license prior to being uploaded here (or appears to have based on the small size and lack of EXIF metadata), and was thus deleted by an Administrator. Policy requires that the actual copyright holder, which is almost always the photographer or image designer, must send a free license directly using OTRS. Take note that the current backlog for OTRS is 7 days, OTRS depends completely on volunteers, who work as hard as they can.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 20:57, 20 February 2019 (UTC)

Banknotes

Hi

Am I allowed to upload images of banknotes from this link? http://www.nationalbanken.dk/en/banknotes_and_coins/Faroeislands/Pages/50-krone-banknote.aspx to use on Wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tofts (talk • contribs) 16:06, 21 February 2019 (UTC)

@Tofts: where an artwork or other design is copyrighted, regardless of how a reproduction is made (or by whom) it’s covered equally to the original. OTOH where a two-dimensional original is free, all faithful reproductions of it are equally free and cannot be separately copyrighted themselves (at least as far as Commons policy is concerned—see COM:PDARTREUSE). So the source of the scan or photo is pretty much irrelevant in any such case; only the status of the original matters.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 22:10, 21 February 2019 (UTC)

Why do my Contributions only go back to 2015?

I'm not exactly sure how far my contributions go back but at least to 2012; however the contributions list only goes to 2015. This is making it impossible to search my contributions for pictures I posted earlier. Wiki name (talk)

@Wiki name: judging by the upload history of one of the earliest uploads on this account (File:Harris County 1910 Courthouse Restored Houston Texas.jpg), it looks like your account was renamed when Commons moved to unified accounts (see meta:Help:Unified login and meta:Single User Login finalisation announcement). I'd guess that your older contributions can be found under the name Wiki name~commonswiki (talk · contribs). clpo13(talk) 19:33, 27 February 2019 (UTC)
when I click on your link "Wiki name~commonswiki" I get "Wikimedia Commons does not currently have a user page called Wiki name~commonswiki."Wiki name (talk)
That's probably because you never created a user page for that account, just as you have never created one at User:Wiki name. However, if you follow the link you'll find that the left sidebar includes links for the contributions and uploads of that account. --bjh21 (talk) 19:54, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

• You don't say where someone used it without crediting you, but if they did, you have exactly the same legal rights as if you had never offered a free license at all. If it is online, I strongly recommend that your first action be simply to write to them and ask for the (belated) credit, but you have full rights to demand takedown, sue for infringement, etc. - Jmabel ! talk 19:09, 17 February 2019 (UTC)
Stepro, kannst du dir das bitte einmal ansehen? — Speravir – 22:50, 22 February 2019 (UTC)
Alles soweit also völlig in Ordnung.

I'm trying to upload a cropped version of this image but, in the Upload Wizard, there is no option for public domain when you choose the of the original work (the image is in the public domain). How would I do this? Thanks SelfieCity (talk) 16:40, 23 February 2019 (UTC)

Convenience link: File:Charlie Parker, Tommy Potter, Miles Davis, Duke Jordan, Max Roach (Gottlieb 06851).jpg. - Jmabel ! talk 22:16, 23 February 2019 (UTC)
  1. If you don't want to upload to Commons, why is it of concern what Commons' Upload Wizard will & won't let you do?
  2. If you want to upload something to Commons using the Upload Wizard, and it won't let you do quite what you want, you can always go in immediately afterward & edit accordingly.
  3. If you want to do a crop of an image on Commons, and upload it on Commons, by far the easiest way to do this is Commons:CropTool, but that is of limited use if your intent is to upload to a different wiki. - Jmabel ! talk 22:20, 23 February 2019 (UTC)
My intention is to upload to a different wiki, not Commons, through this system. My point is that the image is in the public domain, so what license would I use when uploading?
Though I guess the concern is not directly related to the Commons upload system, you may be able to help. SelfieCity (talk) 01:09, 24 February 2019 (UTC)
@SelfieCity: On Commons, the license is {{PD-Gottlieb}}. I have no idea whether an equivalent license template currently exists on WikiVoyage, but if not you could create one. Again, it's not an issue if the upload tool doesn't have a built-in way to get the license template (or, in this case, PD template) you want, just add it immediately after uploading, the same way you would make any other edit. - Jmabel ! talk 05:29, 24 February 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, will do when I have the time. SelfieCity (talk) 05:31, 24 February 2019 (UTC)

Can you please help me?

  • @Marketingsteiff: You didn't link the existing logo, so I don't know whether the existing logo is even on Commons, but let's presume it is.
  • Our intent here is encyclopedic, so we don't delete things here just because they are not current.
  • If the company has a new logo, and if it is either simple enough to be uncopyrightable or if the company is releasing it under an appropriate free license (probably via the process described at COM:OTRS), then you can upload the new logo under a new filename and change any Wikipedia articles, etc., that reference it to use the new logo. - Jmabel ! talk 16:24, 25 February 2019 (UTC)

  • @Weissanna: Signing your posts on talk pages is required by Commons:Signatures policy. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion).

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Saeedbaz (talk • contribs) 22:02, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

  • (Read via Google translate) Yes, you can download files (such as PDFs) and read them later, but I'm not sure what you are asking. You download a PDF from this site exactly the way you do from any other site. That's basically a browser issue. - Jmabel ! talk 05:22, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

I can't upload a photo

WHY can't upload one photo whit the JPG format? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Franconieves (talk • contribs) 04:32, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

How do I add pictures to this kind of page?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_in_Galveston_County,_Texas

On this page, some of the pictures have a Commons logo beneath them and a link to "More Images". Probably my denseness but I can't figure out how to add pictures the the More Images pages or how to add such links to pictures that don't have them.Wiki name (talk)

@Wiki name: Those "More images" links are categories. To add a file to a category, you have to edit the page for the file itself (instead of the page for the category). The quick guide here can help you out: Commons:Categories. –IagoQnsi (talk) 21:30, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

You did upload them successfully, but as they are images from film it:Partenze (Departures) both need licenses from Rome Film Academy (or Roma Film Academy in the original Italian) which are not in evidence. Please have Rome Film Academy send permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:35, 28 February 2019 (UTC)

  • Missing context here: why do you think we could help you on that? Is she a contributor here? - Jmabel ! talk
This is not really the forum to ask such things, but you should probably try using social websites like the Facebook or WeChat as it's very unlikely that she's a contributor here as there are only 7,536,237 people here of which only 38,950 people are active, so even if she would contribute here she is very likely to be banned or retired. Good luck with your search. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 13:22, 28 February 2019 (UTC)

You could probably upload them here, however please read the pages "Commons:Licensing" and "Commons:Scope" as educational images have to be in the public domain. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 13:18, 28 February 2019 (UTC)

@Donald Trung: I think he is asking if the photo is in scope of WLL. However there is a FOP issue so the photo could be deleted Gbawden (talk) 13:29, 28 February 2019 (UTC)

Adding logo to help expand stub article

Hello, I am helping out by expanding a stub article for a company and I would like to add the company's logo to help improve the article. But obviously I do not own this work. How do people usually do this on Wikipedia? Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vanillabean43 (talk • contribs) 16:13, 28 February 2019 (UTC)

@Vanillabean43: Unless either the logo is in the public domain (very old; so simple that it does not qualify for copyright; etc.) or the owner is willing to free-license it (rare), it cannot go on Commons.
You don't say what language Wikipedia and policies vary. I will assume the English Wikipedia, because you are asking in English. The English-language Wikipedia makes some allowance for non-free use. See en:Wikipedia:Non-free content for broad policy discussion, but see especially en:Template:Non-free use rationale logo and en:Template:Non-free logo. - Jmabel ! talk 22:25, 28 February 2019 (UTC)

This is a page for help in using Wikipedia Commons. I strongly suspect you are asking in the wrong place. (I also suspect that when asking someone for help with this, you'd better say what country's income tax you are talking about!) - Jmabel ! talk 22:18, 28 February 2019 (UTC)

Cine a făcut fotografiile? - Jmabel ! talk 22:34, 28 February 2019 (UTC)
