Nominate a batch of files for deletion using "perform batch task"

Hi. I want to nominate a batch of files for deletion using "perform batch task", but I could not figure out how to do that. They are listed at User:4nn1l2/Sandbox. Check an image for me?

I need someone to double check that I'm correct in that File:MAGA.svg -1024x512.png would fall under the public domain like the other MAGA images. It was initially uploaded by one of the students I'm supervising under an incorrect license and I've fixed it to reflect the public domain license, but I wanted to double check that this is correct. I don't want to correct it, only to be wrong myself. :) Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:26, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

WikiSense

A problem has been raised at Template talk:Dw image source about the demise of WikiSense, but it isn't obvious how the template concerned is implemented through the "autotranslate" routine and thus how it should be corrected. Can this file be transferred to Wiki Commons?

This file is currently being hosted on the English Wikipedia under a fair-use licence, however, I'm not convinced it meets the criteria of being considered a copyrightable image in the first place. It's merely the outlay of a Hitachi Maxell recordable cassette cover, with the handwriting of former Marilyn Manson guitarist Daisy Berkowitz as its only distinguishable feature. Maybe the Maxell XLII text formatting/logo is copyrightable in and of itself, but then surely shouldn't Maxell be listed as the author/copyright owner? This may be a problematic one. I understand if it takes a bit longer than usual to respond to this. Thanks. Homeostasis07 (talk) 00:18, 1 October 2017 (UTC)

  • I think that, at least for en-wiki, it is better to keep it as unquestionable fair use than to have it on Commons under a possibly questionable claim of PD. - Jmabel ! talk

Upload cropped version over someone else's original

I'm looking at the image of the Atari 850. I notice it is not cropped properly, so I cropped it. Now how do I upload the new version? It's CC, so I should be able to, right? Maury Markowitz (talk) 23:46, 29 September 2017 (UTC)

You should upload it under a new file name such as File:Atari 850 (cropped).jpg. You can use {{Extracted from}} to link back to the original file. If you use CropTool, it will generate the new file description automatically. Guanaco (talk) 01:54, 30 September 2017 (UTC)
And on the original file description add {{Image extracted}} in the other versions field. — Speravir – 02:00, 30 September 2017 (UTC)

But doesn't this sort of fly in the face of the entire idea? The idea of CC is that anyone can freely modify the image, but here we are limiting it to one person, the person who specifically allowed it to be modified. Maury Markowitz (talk) 11:45, 30 September 2017 (UTC)

The freedom to modify the file granted by (non-ND) Creative Commons licences allows you to make a derivative work. It doesn't, though, allow you to replace all uses of the original, because that's the domain of Commons' guidelines on overwriting existing files. Those guidelines apply to everyone, including the original uploader: they'd likely get reverted if they uploaded a completely different picture under the same name, just as you would. Personally, I think trimming off some of that whitespace could be justified under COM:CROP, but others seem to disagree and in that case it's generally better to upload under a different name. Doing that means that anyone (e.g. a Wikipedia page) using the file can choose which version they want to use, rather than being prevented from using the old one. --bjh21 (talk) 12:06, 30 September 2017 (UTC)
You're confusing two different things. A Free license gives you the right to modify it and redistribute it. But that's never been a right to force anyone else to redistribute it, and programs with Free licenses frequently are very hard to submit patches to. You have to file a copyright assignment to get a patch into GCC, and while there's no such rules on the Linux kernel, many submitters have found getting a patch actually accepted can be quite challenging.--Prosfilaes (talk) 07:16, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
Maury Markowitz, a big deal with this specific image is the shape — there are plenty of situations in which a square image is particularly useful, more useful than a rectangular image. I expect that's part of the reason for wanting this image to have lots and lots of whitespace. Nyttend (talk) 12:05, 3 October 2017 (UTC)

Picture / Copyright

Hi,

a few weeks ago I uploaded a new picture to an article (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boris_Pistorius). It got deleted a few days ago, due to "copyright violations" even tough its the new official press-picture, used by the Ministry of Interior and Sports in Lower Saxony, who officially allows and encourages the usage of this picture. What do I have to do to re-upload this picture. Do I have to provide further evidence?

How to upload an OpenStax image, properly attribute, and create a new CNX category devoted to a particular textbook

I plan to write chapter summaries on Wikiversity for three openstax textbooks (College Physics, University Physics, and Astronomy). I am currently doing Chapter 10 of University Physics at v:Wright State University Lake Campus/2017-9/Phy2410/Chapter 10: Circuits and uploaded the file File:75288 voltage source w load resistor.jpg. I got the idea for the name by clicking "view source" on the openstax and noting that some of the other CNX files are named this way.

I am not sure I filled out the attribution properly (most of my uploads have been my own work). I also took the liberty of creating Category:CNX University Physics since I will eventually use perhaps a dozen images from that textbook.

Is there a format for these CNX images that I should be following? --Guy vandegrift (talk) 21:42, 3 October 2017 (UTC)

Not specific to this source, but you should provide a link (either in source= or permission=) that would allow someone to verify the licence under which the image was released. --bjh21 (talk) 14:48, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

Overlaping images

I noticed that in the file history of some images are two different images. For example: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Saint-Germain-l%27Auxerrois,_Paris,_France_-_panoramio_(69).jpg

What is the solution in this case, that both images will be visible?

Thanks,--Fmvh (talk) 08:38, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

If two different images are uploaded with the same filename, only the latest version will be visible in Wikipedia. If both images need to be visible, they need to be uploaded with different filenames. --David Biddulph (talk) 12:21, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

Note that this upload dates from March 2017. The upload bot did that sort of mistakes sometimes. The bot operator is aware of it and may have fixed the uploading problem already (or maybe not, I don't know), but examples of already uploaded files like this will probably continue to be found. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:15, 6 October 2017 (UTC)

New Benedictine University Logo Update

I work in the Marketing and Communications Office of Benedictine University and we recently hired a marketing firm to come up with a new logo for our University. I have been attempting to update from the old to the new logo for a few weeks and recently the logo I uploaded was flagged for possible copyright violation.

I am in need of some assistance as this should not be the case. We would very much like to update and improve the accuracy of the wikipedia page for Benedictine University, but we are having considerable difficulty in uploading the logo. Please advise Rblackburn1887 (talk) 14:12, 6 October 2017 (UTC)

  1. You should not remove or overwrite the old logo. It is still historically significant.
  2. In terms of the new logo, see COM:OTRS for how to be clear that someone in authority for the relevant institution has provided the license.
  3. In terms of your edits on Wikipedia, make sure you read and comply with en:Wikipedia:COI. - Jmabel ! talk 15:34, 6 October 2017 (UTC)

Advertisements?

Is there a Wikimedia policy about uploading images that are essentially advertisements? This image is of a wedding invitation that, while lovely, is an ad - File:Real walnut wood custom laser cut wedding invitations with inserts printed on plantable paper..png There is a Creative Commons "Attribution 3.0 Unported (CC BY 3.0)" that allows for sharing and adapting the image as long as the provider is credited and a link included. So follow-on uses will likewise be an ad. I cannot find anything about "advertisement/s", "advert/s", "ad/s", or "spam" when searching WM. Does that imply that there's no such restrictions? Thank you for your time, Wordreader (talk) 16:08, 7 October 2017 (UTC)

I don't think there's any restriction on advertising material in files per se, but it must fall within COM:SCOPE, so it must have a realistic educational use. Attribution requirements are a kind of advertising, but those are explicitly allowed by COM:L. In the particular case listed above, though, there's no sign that the uploader actually has any right to license the file at all. --bjh21 (talk) 17:46, 7 October 2017 (UTC)
COM:SCOPE contains "Advertising or self-promotion" under "Examples of files that are not realistically useful for an educational purpose:" --ghouston (talk) 23:01, 7 October 2017 (UTC)
True. That is just an example, though, and in this case conflicts with COM:INUSE since the picture is legitimately in use at en:Wedding invitation. --bjh21 (talk) 13:57, 8 October 2017 (UTC)

Filmuppladdning Till Wikimedia Commons

Hej!

Hello, I want to upload this file to a new Site. The files are File:Synagogue-Church of all Nations.jpg, File:Synagogue-Church of all Nations Sideview.jpg, File:Frontview of the Synagogue Church of all Nations.jpg, File:Innenansicht der Synagoge Church of all Nations.jpg, File:Collapsed Building Synagogue-Church of all Nations.jpg. Can't change image

A file with this name exists already. You can't upload a new version because your account is too new. Please go back and upload the file under a new name. Once you've done that, you can ask someone at the Help desk to move your file to the name you want.

  • You can upload new images under a different image name and then change the article to use them, but until you have been on here longer you can't overwrite images. And there is rarely a need to overwrite images, which should typically only be done for a technical improvement of the same image. - Jmabel ! talk 15:05, 9 October 2017 (UTC)

How can I create a flat list?

Hello,

I want to create a "flat list" for Category:State fairs in the United States. I've put all the ones I know about in that category but I don't know how to make a mega-list (is that what it's call?) out of it. Like "Category:State fairs by state". Is there a How-to for that? Kalbbes (talk) 22:50, 9 October 2017 (UTC)"

  • I'm not sure what you want to do, so the following remark may or may not be relevant.
  • Usually, if the only breakdown we have is "by state" (which is the case here) we don't create another level of category for that. - Jmabel ! talk 03:15, 10 October 2017 (UTC)

Uploading a photo essay

Hi, What is the best platform to use when I collect several photos into a photo essay? I can upload a pdf but then the photos are useable. — Preceding unsigned comment added by S*c*hart (talk • contribs) 11:36, 10 October 2017

@S*c*hart: Probably the easiest is to use the Upload Wizard by clicking on the Upload file button on the left side of any page and keep adding images you want until they are all listed; then upload them and add them to one or more appropriate categories. Another way would be to upload the images you want into a Flickr album and them import the whole album at the same time with the Flikcr2commons tool. Again you can add categories at upload time. PDF are no good for your purpose. BTW please sign your posts. Ww2censor (talk) 14:04, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
I'm not totally sure what you have in mind by "photo essay", and what you have in mind might not be in scope, but basically (assuming it is in scope) you upload the pictures individually, then create a gallery page using the photos. And, naturally, you are not confined to your own photos (nor do you "own" the resulting page: others may make changes they consider to be improvements). See Romanian Orthodox churches in Bucharest for an example of where I've done something like that. - Jmabel ! talk 15:52, 10 October 2017 (UTC)

broken

hello;

when i go to this category:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Kyffh%C3%A4userdenkmal

it absolutely WILL NOT display the 2nd page of images (reads as 210 in total; the last 10)

the link is: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Kyffh%C3%A4userdenkmal&filefrom=Treppe+zum+Kyffh%C3%A4user+Denkmal+-+panoramio.jpg#mw-category-media

instead it takes me to this: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page#4418626907433201205

every time, whether i refresh the cache or not, whether i'm logged in or using "incognito"

it ONLY seems to happen ith this one, single category. other categories will take me to the next page just fine.

POSSIBLY the problem has something to do with the filename in the address?

is anybody else getting the same problem, or is it "just me"?

Lx 121 (talk) 00:10, 29 September 2017 (UTC)

It's fine for me. Following either the link at the bottom of the first page or your one above gets me to the last 10 pictures (from File:Treppe zum Kyffhäuser Denkmal - panoramio.jpg to File:Фридрих Барбаросса.Куфхаузен.jpg). --bjh21 (talk) 00:26, 29 September 2017 (UTC)

Getting image re-added

I am trying to get an image re-added (https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Rosenberg-david.jpg&action=edit&redlink=1). The copyright holder gave me permission to add the photo and send an email confirming this. She got a ticket#: 2017092610024799 and that was on 9/28. They told us to wait for an administrator to take care of it, but she is getting antsy about it being added again and asked for my help. How can this get sped up? I would like to add it to the author's entry. Thanks in advance. --Librarygurl (talk) 13:40, 11 October 2017 (UTC)

The OTRS backlog is currently two months. By that standard, September 28 is still a recent date. The ticket number means that the mail has been received and is in the line. The OTRS people should get to it around the end of November. If you ask them to let you pass ahead of the other people who are already waiting their turn in the line, they might do it, but there doesn't seem to be a special urgency in the case of this photo. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:06, 11 October 2017 (UTC)

@Keewii: That is a clear no for commons. The cover contains a photograph and is above the threshold of originality. You may upload it locally under the fair use clause on some wikis. The English wikipedia would probably accept it. More info here: w:en:Wikipedia:Non-free content --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 22:23, 11 October 2017 (UTC)

Can't find Vimeo licence

Hi, Upon searching for videos yesterday I downloaded https://vimeo.com/216535229 and am currently uploading it now, However the issue I now have is that there's no licence on this video ? ... if you click "more" next to the date that brings up tags and the author but that's it so how would I go about finding the licence?,
i could re-search but surely the licence should be on the video ? ...,

It came via Facebook.   — Jeff G. ツ 10:06, 12 October 2017 (UTC)
If, as your account name suggests, you are Pame Cárdenas, then there are two possibilities:
  1. If someone else took the photo, the copyright belongs to them, and they will need to send permission as described at COM:OTRS.
  2. If you took this yourself with a timer, because it was previously published elsewhere, you will need to send permission as described at COM:OTRS.
If, you are not Pame Cárdenas, then you should not be using someone else's real name as your account name, and we are back to case 1. - Jmabel ! talk 15:38, 12 October 2017 (UTC)

real name of photographer

I want to use an animal photo given to public domain by its creator and to cite the real name of the latter correctly. There's no possibility on your website to contact him or her directly. Can you tell me the real name of the photographer "Magalhães", please, or how to contact him or her? Best wishes. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 77.7.160.174 (talk)

It may be that Magalhães does not want to be identified. Because the images are public domain, attribution isn't necessary, but as a courtesy you could simply attribute the images to "Magalhães // Wikimedia Commons" or similar. We do have a web form to send an email. To do this, create an account, then register and verify your email address in Special:Preferences. Then use Special:EmailUser/Magalhães, or find "Email this user" in the sidebar of the userpage. Guanaco (talk) 20:48, 13 October 2017 (UTC)
Also, all registered users on this site can be contacted directly using their user talk page; in this case User talk:Magalhães. Note that unlike e-mail, talk pages are public. LX (talk, contribs) 21:45, 13 October 2017 (UTC)

How to delete all 21 images I uploaded today (and upload them again corrected, with Wizard)?

Karpmoi (talk) 13:04, 14 October 2017 (UTC)

  • First, if just the text information about this images is problematic, and the images themselves are fine, just edit the information.
  • Second, if the images are correctly named, and the information is fine, but you want to tweak the images, consider just using the "Upload a new version of this file" link on each.
  • Third, on a level of individual images, you can always request speedy deletion of a recent upload: {{speedydelete|uploader request on recent upload}}.
  • Finally, you can start a Mass deletion request just like you would for anyone else's images. - Jmabel ! talk 16:33, 14 October 2017 (UTC)
Variant 2a: If you you noticed errors in the image names, you can request to get them renamed. By default there should be a dropdown menu with “More” on the upper right where you should find a “Move” button. Start and request renaming as uploader (reason no. 1). — Speravir – 01:32, 15 October 2017 (UTC)

Categories not appearing in the Upload Wizard

I recently uploaded a number of images of townlands of the parish of Kilflynn, County Kerry, Ireland, using the Upload Wizard. In the drop-down box to choose a category, there were ones for townlands of several Irish counties, but not Kerry. I chose instead 'Townlands of Ireland', resolving to create a 'Townlands of County Kerry' category. Then I found that there *is* a 'Townlands of County Kerry' for Wikipedia pages. All the pages I created, which have my uploaded images in them, are now in that category page.

But how can I place the images themselves in such a category name? I can only assume either that the categories for uploaded images are not the same as for Wikipedia pages, or there's a problem with the Upload Wizard.

Help, please. Dm4244 (talk) 21:38, 15 October 2017 (UTC)

  • Commons categories are separate from Wikipedia categories (as categories in any of the hundreds of language-specific Wikipedias are separate from one another). If you can identify the relevant Commons category, you can edit the relevant file page to add, remove, or change a category exactly as you would edit any other wiki page. - Jmabel ! talk 23:56, 15 October 2017 (UTC)

Slightly restrictive license being used for out-of-copyright work of art

This commons page for Raphael's Collona Maddona has been given a slightly restrictive CC BY-SA 4.0 licence rather than the more usual PD-art and PD-old-100 licence for a work which 500 years old. Is this allowed or correct, or even enforcable? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Roblowe1953 (talk • contribs)

  • On something like this, when it comes from (say) a Flickr stream, normally you can just substitute the appropriate license. Your edit summary should explain what you are doing. Here, I see, it comes from a Commons user who uploaded it with a dubious claim of copyright. @Jbribeiro1: please don't make claims of copyright on works where you don't own a copyright. If it's a faithful photo of a public-domain 2-dimensional work -- as this is -- it is simply in the public domain. - Jmabel ! talk 16:05, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
Well, the user may own a copyright, applicable in countries where his photo may be copyrightable. Only, he's not allowed, per Commons policy, to upload his photo on Commons unless he abandons his copyright. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:13, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
Correct and enforceable, possibly yes, in countries where the copyright exists. See Commons:Reuse of PD-Art photographs#Country-specific rules. If you ask if it's allowed on Commons, it depends where the file comes from and who licenses it:
If the photo is copied from an external source, say, the website of an European museum where the photo is licensed under specified license terms (free or not free, with or without attribution to a photographer), then yes it is allowed. And not only it is allowed, but we must preserve and mention all that information for the benefit of the reusers. It is important because reusers who consider using the photo in countries where it is copyrighted must be informed of the fact that they can use it, under what license, and what the required mentions are. Practically, this can be done with the use of templates like Licensed-PD-Art-two. There are various ways to use the template parameters as needed, and more details can be mentioned in the permission field of the information template if necessary.
If the photographer is a Commons contributor who uploads his own photo to Commons, then the policy of Commons requires that the contributor must abandon his copyright. This is a policy decision based on the view of the Wikimedia Foundation that such photos should not be copyrighted and that the rest of the world should change their laws to conform to the situation in the United States, and that Commons contributors should adhere to that view if they contribute to Wikimedia Commons. Commons contributors must choose between abandoning their copyright to offer their photos on Commons, or not uploading theirs photo to Commons to preserve their copyright. So, in the case of the file in your question, no the license is not allowed by Commons policy. But you can probably see cases where this policy is not enforced. Note that in theory the "usual PD-Art", as you say, i.e. the basic "PD-Art" template, is not recommended for photos by Commons contributors. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag#When should the PD-Art tag not be used?.

File Categories

I uploaded a photo (my first ever) and didn't categorize it. How can I add a category to it now that it's an existing file in wikimedia commons?

Atitlan88 (talk) 04:39, 18 October 2017 (UTC)

@Atitlan88: At the bottom of each file description page, there is a listing of categories. If you want to add a category, you can just click the (+) symbol, type the name of the category, and hit save. You can also remove categories or change them with (−) or (±). To change multiple categories in a single edit, click (++).
We have some more information about this feature at Help:Gadget-HotCat#User interface. Guanaco (talk) 05:21, 18 October 2017 (UTC)
Or you can just hand-edit the text source to make similar additions. Use the editor to look at the source text for some similar file page, then edit accordingly. - Jmabel ! talk 16:05, 18 October 2017 (UTC)

hi, i have edited the identification of a bird species... i am confident this is the correct identification as it was made by a well known and experienced birder... the entry now appears under the appropriate species name when you search.. however, the file name.jpeg is incorrect and i am unable to edit this... what to do? vic — Preceding unsigned comment added by Drvic (talk • contribs) 09:30, 18 October 2017

@Drvic: I presume you are referring to File:Acanthiza ewingii.jpg. Firstly it is so much easier to help you if you provide a link to the image in question so we don't have to search for it and we also don't have to search for you if you sign your posts with 4 tildes ~~~~, like this. So, to request an image to be renamed you need to add the appropriate tag to the image. All the details are at: Commons:File renaming#How to rename a file? but you can't preform the actual rename yourself, so have patience after you add the request to the image. Notifying Wikipedia users about Commons deletion requests?

Is there a good way to notify Wikipedia users on their original Wikipedia userpages about Commons-based deletion requests for their images? It often seems like Commons talkpage messages get missed (or ignored), especially by new unexperienced uploaders who may upload through one of the Wikipedia projects like en-Wiki. Of course I could write a manual message (and have done so a few times already), but a templated message would be more convenient. I know this aspect has been discussed in the past, maybe such a template or process already exists and I just don't see it. GermanJoe (talk) 10:04, 18 October 2017 (UTC)

As long as they haven't actively disabled notifications from other wikis in the Notifications section of their preferences on their local project, they will be notified of messages left on their talk pages here. There is no straightforward way to use message templates from Commons on other projects. LX (talk, contribs) 11:57, 18 October 2017 (UTC)

Question about use of * in categories

Hello,

Some categories use * to separate categories in a parent category and force one category to the top. Example: Category:Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania where Category:Townships in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania is first in the categories though out of alphabetical order. How is this done? Thanks, Kalbbes (talk) 13:33, 20 October 2017 (UTC)

@Kalbbes: Per en:WP:SORTKEY consideration 2, that character is special, in that sort keys which start with it get sorted first, in that order, before both numbers and letters. This happens because it (along with 15 others) precedes numbers and letters in USASCII character code order.   — Jeff G. ツ 13:58, 20 October 2017 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Thanks so much. I've always wondered about that. Your links above open up a whole new world to me. Kalbbes (talk) 15:05, 20 October 2017 (UTC)

@Heidibuild: The original, uncropped image is File:Freedom Tower Russell.jpg. It's 8 megapixels, the max resolution for the iPhone 5S camera which took the photo, so I don't think a better version is possible. Picture of workmen

Hi there,

I recently uploaded a picture I found on Pixabay to wiki commons. Today I received an email telling me I haven't attributed it properly and it could get deleted.

I found the page by doing an advanced google search with usage rights being "free to use, share or modify, even comercially". On the Pixabay page I downloaded it from it is marked "Free for commercial use No attribution required".

I am not very computer literate and am hoping you can help me out to prevent this picture being deleted as it is being used for an assignment I submitted today.

Regards,

Si Brown — Preceding unsigned comment added by Si Brown (talk • contribs) 08:54, 23 October 2017 (UTC)

  • When asking a question like this, it would be very helpful if you would link the file page (and sign your post with ~~~~.
  • (Also, please, when uploading give your file a mnemonic name that relates to what it depicts, and please add categories.)
  • You have a lot of images potentially up for deletion, so it's hard for me to guess which one you are referring to. I'm guessing File:Work-384745 1920.jpg since you give a source on Pixabay. Yes, it looks like you are correct and the nominator is wrong: the source page clearly says, "CC0 Creative Commons", "Freie kommerzielle Nutzung", "Kein Bildnachweis nötig". - Jmabel ! talk 15:08, 23 October 2017 (UTC)
  • However, it also looks like you initially uploaded this with the wrong license: you used {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}} for an image that is licensed {{Cc-0}}. Please check your other uploads for any similar errors. - Jmabel ! talk 15:11, 23 October 2017 (UTC)

1909

Can works published in 1909 be uploaded? Are they considered Public Domain by US and European laws? I herd you liek mudkips (talk) 15:29, 23 October 2017 (UTC)

They in public domain in USA ({{PD-US-1923}}). As for Europe they are likely to be in public domain as well though this depends on their country of origin and author. Ruslik (talk) 19:57, 23 October 2017 (UTC)
What is the latest date in which a work is 100% for sure in European Public Domain? I herd you liek mudkips (talk) 20:14, 23 October 2017 (UTC)
There wouldn't be any firm date, because the author could have been young, and long-lived. I know we had a discussion here a while back about how much time would pass before we would presume PD, but I don't remember if we had a solid consensus. Something like 125-130 years seems reasonable to me. That allows for a 20-year-old who lived to 75-80 now having been dead for the required 70 years. I'd add a little more for something that looked like a child's drawing. - Jmabel ! talk 23:53, 23 October 2017 (UTC)
That said, many European countries have something much shorter for anonymous and/or "non-artistic" photographs. - Jmabel ! talk 23:55, 23 October 2017 (UTC)
120 years, according to {{PD-old-assumed}}. I used it recently on File:Sion College 1800 (2).jpg, from 1815, which seems a bit silly, but I'm not sure what else is appropriate when details of the author are unknown. --ghouston (talk) 00:29, 24 October 2017 (UTC)
I would like to point out an example. Films by Charlie Chaplin (died 1977 - yes indeed), known for his comedic silent film era, are still copyrighted, starting with his 1918 film A Dog's Life. Artix Kreiger (talk) 02:00, 24 October 2017 (UTC)
Which is 100 years, not 120. We did have this discussion, and we did come to a conclusion of 120 years being acceptable for Commons.
And actually films by Charlie Chaplin are not universally copyrighted; works published more than 95 years ago are not copyrighted in the US, and as Charlie Chaplin's films are (at least the early ones) American works, that applies in any country with the rule of the shorter term with respect to US works.--Prosfilaes (talk) 02:21, 24 October 2017 (UTC)

incorrect information on company page, struggling to edit/merge pages together

Hi Helpdesk ,

I am not a Wiki expert but I spotted some incorrect information displayed for a company https://www.santaferelo.com/ The company currently has two pages on wiki - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Fe_Group and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Fe_Relocation_Services and both pages display partially incorrect information. The company recently rebranded from "Santa Fe Relocation Services" to "Santa Fe Relocation", hence logo and company name within both pages is wrong.

Could someone with more experience please advise what is the best way for this to be resolved? I think it would make sense to merge the pages (and information) together, update the logo and change the name to the correct "Santa Fe Relocation". Check the official site/resources to verify the changes -https://www.santaferelo.com/; https://www.santaferelo.com/news-and-blog/Santa-Fe-Relocation-refreshes-its-identity

Could someone kindly give me a hand?

  • The file name linked [[File:Quadrato Magico Perfetto 16 x 16|thumb|esposto in un museo ]] does not exist (it's not a well formed image file name) and I can't find anything similarly named. It's also not clear to me what any of the above has to do with seeking help with Wikimedia Commons. Jmabel ! talk 15:49, 29 October 2017 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:SamHydePortrait.png

I contacted Sam Hyde, the creator this image, for his permission to use this image on Wikipedia through his email. He filled out a letter of consent and everything and emailed it to Wikipedia, so why is it still listed as not having licensing?

Attached is the logs from the emails;

Hey Big Guy,

All images of you on Wikimedia were recently removed because of some copyright licensing bullshit, so we're gonna need a replacement.

Do you have a photo of yourself that we can use on Wikipedia? It should be one owned by you or some shit, and you should of course give permission to use it.

Looking forward to it, Cheers!

Thanks for replying Sam,

So because Wikipedia is full of bureaucratic bullshit I just need you to go through this thing to go through this so some pajeet doesn't take down the photo after 2 minutes because of photo licensing bullshit
https://tools.wmflabs.org/relgen/

It will ask if you already uploaded to Wikimedia, yeah so just paste this link in the box
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SamHydePortrait.png

Then it will give you the finished text which you just copy and paste and send to the email it says to, and you're all done.

Thanks B,

  1. The file page does not give any indication of what license has been granted. There is no way the image will be retained without a specific license.
  2. OTRS has a backlog on the order of a month; you don't indicate how long it has been since permission was sent.
  3. That image doesn't look like a selfie, nor particularly like a picture taken with a timer (in fact it looks like a crop from a larger image). Copyright on a photo belongs to the photographer, not the subject, so I personally would doubt whether Sam Hyde owns the copyright on this image of himself. - Jmabel ! talk 15:57, 29 October 2017 (UTC)

Honestly - I tried figuring out if USC's digital library allowed for re-use of their images in this way but could not figure out under which Creative Commons license they would fall. On the about page, it is written: "USCDL users are free to download, copy, and distribute works in the public domain without asking for permission. When reproducing or republishing public domain content, please credit "USC Digital Library" and provide a link back to the original." --Cynthiaarmour (talk) 04:49, 30 October 2017 (UTC)

  • If it is public domain, it needs some sort of public domain tag, not a CC license. If it is copyrighted, then the remark relating to "works in the public domain" would not be relevant. I'm pretty sure this would be {{PD-US-not renewed}}, because I'm pretty sure the LA Times didn't renew any of its copyrights, but I'm not expert on that, and someone else may want to weigh in. - Jmabel ! talk 06:29, 30 October 2017 (UTC)

Uploading the picture when similar picture is already uploaded

Hi guys. I'm not sure about uploading a picture, when some similar picture is already uploaded here. It may be better to speak (or rather type) specifically. I took a very interesting photo of earthworms copulating, but some another photo of this act has already been uploaded to Commons earlier. In my opinion my photo is quite better (there is a much better visible that interesting and unusual connection of their bodies). Can I upload my photo? If I can, then should I replace it or just add it to (czech version) Earthworm article? Or should I upload it but neither replace it nor add it to any article? Or should I upload it not at all...? Sorry for my English and sorry if the similar question has already been answered (I didn't find it, maybe I chose wrong key words). Thanks. --ListickaFox (talk) 03:01, 25 October 2017 (UTC)

Please upload it. Commons seems to have a real shortage of earthworm sex images; one image is nowhere near enough (it's File:Mating earthworms.jpg). --ghouston (talk) 04:34, 25 October 2017 (UTC)
OK. I'm gonna upload it as soon as I get a photo to my computer. File:Mating earthworms.jpg picture is probably even better than mine. I originally talked about this one: File:Lumbricus_terrestris_mating.jpg. Thanks for the advice. --ListickaFox (talk) 13:49, 25 October 2017 (UTC)
To answer the more general question, this is a special case of COM:EDUSE: is there a realistic reason why someone would choose your picture for an educational purpose rather than one that Commons already has? So if your picture is technically better, or shows a different aspect of the process, or has a different background, or a different aspect ratio, then you should upload it. And if Commons only has a few pictures of the subject, there's almost certainly something different about your picture that makes it worth adding. --bjh21 (talk) 11:14, 25 October 2017 (UTC)
The very first difference is I took it at night. Unfortunately, the flash is quite visible on their wet bodies, but on the other hand it could be the second difference - I don't know much about earthworms, but as far as I know the surface of their bodies is naturally damp. The last big difference is mine was taken from 90° above the act, so in this way the view of my photo seems to be unique. Thanks for the clarification. --ListickaFox (talk) 13:49, 25 October 2017 (UTC)
I've just noticed the second part of your question, about replacing pictures in Wikipedia articles. This is really a question about Wikipedia rather than Commons, so you'll probably get a better answer at cs:Wikipedie:Potřebuji pomoc (once you've uploaded the picture). --bjh21 (talk) 22:50, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
On this author page: https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Author:James_Frederick_Ferrier

it says "Works by this author published before January 1, 1923 are in the public domain worldwide because the author died at least 100 years ago. Translations or editions published later may be copyrighted. Posthumous works may be copyrighted based on how long they have been published in certain countries and areas."

On this page: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Image_Fer38_02_INTRODUCTION_TO_THE_PHILOSOPHY_OF_CONSCIOUSNESS%E2%80%94PART_1.pdf&page=2

it says "The uploader did not provide sufficient information (a valid and suitable tag) on this media's copyright status. Unless the copyright status is provided, the file could be deleted seven days after the upload (29 October 2017). Please note that Commons does not accept files claimed under fair use. It is suggested to read the intro of Commons' licensing policy, about essential information and (in many cases) about Internet images. If you need help ask at the Commons:Help desk. "

I provided this information: Description English: INTRODUCTION TO THE PHILOSOPHY OF CONSCIOUSNESS—PART 1 Date 1 February 1838 Source An Introduction to the Philosophy of Consciousness (Part I) Ferrier, J.F. What information did I fail to provide? Does archive.org permit my downloading copyrighted PDF? Please clarify. --Klarm768 (talk) 20:37, 30 October 2017 (UTC)

This uploaded file File:Image Fer38 02 INTRODUCTION TO THE PHILOSOPHY OF CONSCIOUSNESS—PART 1.pdf was extracted from this file https://ia902705.us.archive.org/27/items/blackwoodsedinb245unkngoog/blackwoodsedinb245unkngoog.pdf because I am specifically capturing works of James Frederick Ferrier. Klarm768 (talk) 20:59, 30 October 2017 (UTC)

I've added the correct templates, which were {{PD-old-auto|1864}}{{PD-1923}}. The problem was that you didn't choose "First published before 1923 and author deceased more than 70 years ago" when uploading the file. I notice that you've also marked the file for speedy deletion. If your only reason for doing so was to correct the licensing, you might want to remove the notice, since there's no need to delete a file just to correct the description. --bjh21 (talk) 21:52, 30 October 2017 (UTC)
PS: Magog the Ogre has demonstrated an even better licence tag: {{PD-old-auto-1923|1864}}. That encompasses both the US and UK copyright situations in one tag. --bjh21 (talk) 12:10, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
Thanks. I would be willing to remove the notice for speedy deletion which I chose for the reason you cite. But to do so, I need help to find the page on which to edit that notice. But perhaps now there's another reason to delete it...
It appears now there is a sticker on it about PDF Privacy considerations PDF is a complex format that may expose some of your private information in some cases. Make sure to configure your PDF viewer in a safe way. This issue is not specific to this particular file, but a general issue with the PDF format. Would it be conceivable to remedy the metadata problem of this copy without deleting this copy and reloading a scrubbed-PDF copy? Klarm768 (talk) 12:33, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
Magog the Ogre already removed the speedy deletion notice. I think the PDF warning is applied to all PDF files, since detecting malicious content is (in general) undecidable. --bjh21 (talk) 15:19, 31 October 2017 (UTC)

uploading my deceased great-grandfather's documents

My great-grandfather was a notable architect and designer in the Palm Desert, CA region for several decades. There is a Wikipedia article about him, which lacks any of his drawings or photographs of his work. I have high quality digital scans of all those works. Can I upload them to the wikimedia commons?

--ChimpanzeeThat (talk) 16:47, 31 October 2017 (UTC)

Maybe. There are two things to consider: whether the pictures come within Commons' project scope and whether copyright law allows Commons to host them.
Unless there are thousands of pages, I think the fact that the architect is notable is probably enough to satisfy the project scope. If there are thousands then you might want to select the more notable ones at first.
From the copyright side, there are essentially two ways Commons can get the right to host works. One is if they are in the public domain in the USA. This is complicated and will depend on when your great-grandfather died and when and whether the works have been published already. You can read about it at COM:PD, or if you can give us death and publication dates we can probably work it out.
The other way for Commons to get the right to host the pictures is if the owner of the copyright releases them under a free licence. I don't know in detail how inheritance of copyright works in the US, but if you are your great-grandfather's sole heir and the works aren't in the public domain then you probably own the copyrights and can release them under a free licence. See COM:L for more details. --bjh21 (talk) 17:48, 31 October 2017 (UTC)

Best Practices Uploading and Processing: Can segments of one PDF be extracted for publication as separate documents?

I have a 887 page PDF of 1838 (no copyright issues) page-images (multiple periodical-issues in one volume).
Three (non-sequential) articles in the volume are attributed to one author (14 pages + 15 pages + 7 pages = 36 pages).
I only intend to convert those three articles (36 pages) to text.
I want to them to become separate files (3 different works of the same author) when completed.
Would it be advisable to keep the whole volume intact as produced by Google? i.e. upload as one 887 page PDF?
Would it be advisable to first extract the segments I actually want into 3 separate PDF's, and then upload these with unique titles?
Would there be another method that would be more advisable?

Klarm768 (talk) 17:01, 31 October 2017 (UTC)

You definitely do not need to upload the whole pdf. Ruslik (talk) 20:24, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
