Facebook

Hello, I and others recognized that there are some countries that made a facebook page. But there seems to be a problem, the legal terms of facebook and the free licenses from the images from Wikimedia Commons (exept public domain images) seem incompatible. @Pustekuchen2014: Should we probably avoid advocating "please share this on Facebook" for works under a ShareAlike license? I think that the incompatibility happens when trying to share a CC-BY-SA work on Facebook. If I'm reading m:Legal and Community Advocacy/CC-BY-SA on Facebook correctly, importing CC-BY-SA content from somewhere else (for example, from Wikimedia Commons) to Facebook is a violation of the license because it would not really be "sharing alike" due to the additional terms imposed by Facebook. Though, it should be ok for someone to publish a photo on Facebook mentioning they are licensing it under CC-BY-SA and then importing it to Wikimedia Commons, or to re-publish their own photos anywhere. whym (talk) 11:41, 5 April 2014 (UTC)

@Whym: CC-BY-SA licensed pictures from Commons to facebook: no. CC-BY-SA licensed pictures from facebook to Commons: generally yes. Because when you upload a picture to facebook you grant a non-exclusive license to facebook so they can use it. Because it is a non-exclusive license they can also be published under CC-BY or CC-BY-SA or CC0. But uploading CC-BY or CC-BY-SA pictures to facebook and you are not the photographer violates the license and is not okay. Categorization

Hello, I just saw by chance a picture uploaded at this competition categorized in a way I thought it was wrong so I looked and saw that every WLM-picture seems to be categorized that way (so maybe it’s right I thought …):

For example has a German, Bavarian image from the 2016' competition the categories Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2016, Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in Germany and Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2016, DE-BY of wich is one the subcategory of another.

Now I thought this is a clear cause of Over-categorization because it seems not to be the given exception. So I want to ask: Why is this made this way? Best regards, KPFC 💬 21:37, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

First thing to be aware of is that it are no content/topic categories you refer to (categories about subjects), but contest categories. With contests we want to have an overview of images per country, but also an overview of all the images in one single category. Romaine (talk) 00:55, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

Translatathon for WLM templates

Hi,

just as I was editing the cultural monuments template for Saxony I thought that maybe a translatathon sometime in spring next year would be great to get as many translations of templates for WLM 2019 as possible. Lack of central discussion forum

The Wikimedia Foundation just sent out a mass email to donors which I think links to the December blog post ‘Monumental’ winners from the world’s largest photo contest showcase history and heritage. I am seeing various emails come in through Commons:OTRS with comments about this.

There are lots of Wiki Love Monuments project pages. There seems to be no central discussion forum where people can gather to discuss the competition.

I propose to have many talk pages redirect to one central place, perhaps this talk page, for any page which low traffic and which could reasonably redirect to a central general forum. I do not expect to take quick action on this, but I do think this is urgent. We get lots of comments about Wiki Loves Monuments but seem to not have any on-wiki forum for people to discuss it generally. Blue Rasberry (talk) 17:44, 26 January 2019 (UTC)

Structured Data on Commons and Wiki Loves... campaigns: wishes for UploadWizard?

Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons (SDC) will become available this year. With SDC, Wikimedians can add data from Wikidata directly to files on Wikimedia Commons.

Benefits include multilinguality of Commons files (users can find and describe files on Commons in many languages), and machine-readable data with better APIs, that offer more advanced possibilities to build applications like Monumental.

In the not so far future, you will also be able to organize Wiki Loves... (Monuments, Earth, Africa, Art, Love, ...) campaigns on Wikimedia Commons with structured data. (This is entirely optional, but maybe some of you are already keen to do this, especially if you already have monument or other data in Wikidata!)

In the course of 2019, the SDC development team wants to improve Wikimedia Commons' UploadWizard to support the campaigns that want to be powered by Structured Data 'new style'.

Do you have ideas and wishes for this? The team wants to hear which structured data features you want to see in UploadWizard, and we are now organizing a consultation about this over the next two weeks. This page gives more context, and links to where you can leave feedback. We're collecting this first round of input until April 17. Many thanks in advance for all your ideas! Overly processed or poor quality images

I note with great concern that many low-quality images, with filters that add artificial colors, exaggerated contrasts, dramatic filtering, and even fake retouching are selected as winners in many countries. On the contrary, images of high quality and superior from a technical point of view are not selected in several countries. I think that countries are interested in participating in WLM but they pay little or no attention by selecting mediocre photos, which results in a negative impact for those who collaborate in the contest, which causes excellent photographers to stop contributing to Commons. --Wilfredor (talk) 14:38, 30 November 2020 (UTC)

Map wish

When in a place I haven't been in years or ever, I like to pull out my phone and check Wikishootme for unphotographed objects nearby. WSM gives me a map showing Wikidata items, with colors for those for which WD has or lacks photos, and for Wikipedia articles. Of course, many monumental targets are not shown because WD has no geographical coordinates for all, but many of those targets do have coords in the appropriate WP list article. I would be much pleased if:

1. Those places had a dot, either by a map that looks in those list articles, or by a bot that makes WD points for them.
2. Better, not just a dot, but a distinctive symbol.
3. Not just WSM but also Commons App, which has better upload aids.
   1. Better yet, a feature that automatically adds the appropriate Commons Category.

Wikistories on Commons: a proposed visual content tool in WikiCommons

Greetings, everyone!

The WMF Inuka team is exploring having the Wikistories tool on Commons, so we want to get your feedback.

Our proposal

The Inuka team believes the Wikistories tool would significantly increase our projects' visual form of knowledge if we introduce a Wikistories workflow in WikiCommons. The above thinking is because the Commons is a repository of freely licensed media files that is discoverable across other projects and languages.

We have carefully outlined what we want to achieve with the tool on Commons, and we are optimistic about a good outcome. However, the Wikistories on Commons initiative is still a proposal that will require the WikiCommons community's feedback/ input on our design explorations before we commit to the work.

Our request

In the next three weeks, the Inuka team would want you as a member of the Commons community to:

• Read more about the initiative.
• Attend our proposed office hours, where we will present our design exploration and discuss our plan with this proposal.
• Give feedback on this initiative and share your input about the design exploration on the talk page we have created.

We have provided three spots for office hours.

• Wednesday 26th October at 10:00 UTC
• Saturday, 29th October at 15:00 UTC
• Monday 31st October at 06:00 UTC

Please click on the date that works for you and register to attend the office hour. If you can't attend, that is fine. However, we will appreciate your feedback about the design exploration and the Wikistories on Commons proposal on the talk page.

Wikistories on Commons conversations with the WikiCommons Community

Greetings, Everyone!

The WMF Inuka team would like to thank everyone who attended the Wikistories office hours, provided feedback, and asked questions about our exploration to incorporate the workflow in Commons. We received valuable input from the office hours participants who attended the different office hours, and we have summarized the discussions here.

Takeaways from the discussions

Most questions asked during office hours were aimed at understanding the tool's features and its moderation in Commons. We answered the questions based on our design thoughts; some other comments were insights for the Inuka team into areas of consideration while working on the initiative to optimize the tool's usage when it is developed. Therefore, the above suggests curiosity from Commons contributors about the Wikistories initiative. The Inuka team sees this as a sign to proceed to the next step of this project unless the community collectively thinks otherwise.

What next?

We are allowing other community members to read the office hours note, ask follow-up questions or provide feedback about the initiative for the Inuka team’s awareness and engagement as we proceed on this project. The Inuka team will post periodic updates to help the WikiCommons community stay aware and involved during the project phases.
