Blueberry category sorting

Can someone help with this...See Category:Blueberries. For some reason "Vaccinium myrtillus (fruit)‎" sorts under "M" and I can't figure out why. Thanks. PumpkinSky talk 15:54, 1 April 2017 (UTC)

It is because the Category:Vaccinium myrtillus (fruit) page contains a sorting key 'myrtillus' for Category:Blueberries. Ruslik (talk) 16:10, 1 April 2017 (UTC)
Changed by PumpkinSky, therefore question is solved. — Speravir – 00:24, 4 April 2017 (UTC)

Can i upload sexual content on commons?--Green20t (talk) 09:27, 1 April 2017 (UTC)

  • Typically yes, with some limitations. Obviously, you must have consent of the subjects; no minors; we tend to be a lot stricter about quality in this area than others (e.g. we have plenty of well-done photos of normal human penises, we don't need someone's cell-phone-selfie of theirs); and the usual conditions apply of the picture having educational use. That's probably not exhaustive, but gives you an idea. See Commons:Sexual content#Status quo handling of controversial content. - Jmabel ! talk 15:35, 1 April 2017 (UTC)

Deleting file I just uploaded

How can I delete a file I uploaded in error? Wmpearl (talk) 19:53, 1 April 2017 (UTC)

You can’t delete it yourself, but you can tag it for speedy deletion by an administrator. The short code for requesting deletion of a recent upload of your own, that’s not used (linked from) anywhere, is {{SD|G7}}.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 20:29, 1 April 2017 (UTC)

My image upload only appears in Commons categories when I am logged in. It disappears when I am logged out.

I recently uploaded an image to Commons at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Silver_Fern_Sunburn.png. I properly associated the image with the Commons categories 'Proposed national flags of New Zealand' and 'Proposed flags of New Zealand', at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Proposed_national_flags_of_New_Zealand and at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Proposed_flags_of_New_Zealand. When I am logged in, my image upload appears in these two Commons categories, but when I am logged out, it vanishes. It is also the case that when I visit the Wikipedia page 'New Zealand flag debate' at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand_flag_debate, and I click the Commons link at the bottom of that page for 'Proposed national flags of New Zealand', which again is at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Proposed_national_flags_of_New_Zealand, I only see my image on that Commons page when I am logged in.

I previously had this identical problem for other images that I had uploaded for these Commons categories, and I contacted the Commons Help Desk on that occasion as well. Afterward the problem was resolved, apparently by an Administrator, but I was not apprised of how it was addressed, and it seems to have recurred.

Images that I have uploaded to Commons for another set of categories have appeared immediately and correctly, whether I am logged in or not, adding to my puzzlement. Can you rectify this problem or inform me of a fix that I can perform myself?

Kind regards,

Uploading photographs

Why can't I upload photographs of paintings I own? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tony Barker-May (talk • contribs)

Is this a copyright question? Commons only accepts files that are freely licensed or public domain. If a painting is still in copyright, it needs a license from the artist. --ghouston (talk) 04:42, 5 April 2017 (UTC)
If it's about Lionel Hornabrooke Jago, he died in 1953, so his works are public domain in Australia, at least. --ghouston (talk) 04:58, 5 April 2017 (UTC)

SVG Rendering Issues

I can't seem to figure this one out.

I'm trying to upload a replacement for File:Dynamic's Note Velocity.svg that fixes its formatting issues and uses standard notation. This is what the SVG looks like on my computer, in all browsers. And yet, if you look at how it is rendered server-side by Wikimedia, it is all kinds of messed up.

What's going on? I've exported it from Illustrator with the SVG 1.1 profile, and I've told it to embed glyphs, and yet it looks like a mess.

--VSimonian (talk) 20:07, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

See Help:Purge. I’ve just purged the 1000px preview image. It was a remnant of one of your older file versions. — Speravir – 21:32, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for looking into the problem, Speravir. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem that purging the file is helping the server parse the SVG correctly. It still generates a broken image. --VSimonian (talk) 21:58, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
Oops, you’re right. @Perhelion? Some ideas? — Speravir – 00:24, 11 April 2017 (UTC)
Did you have a look at Help:SVG, Commons:SVG Check and en:Wikipedia:SVG help? -- Asclepias (talk) 00:42, 11 April 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for the resources! I used SVG Check, and it looks like there is a bug which hasn't been fixed since being reported in 2014 that affected my SVG file. Apparently the rasterizer will not recognise any <style> tag if it does not have type="text/css" set on it. Illustrator, as most modern tools, doesn't include that optional attribute. Not much progress, or any at all, has been made in librsvg. :(
I made the appropriate changes, and verified that it displays correctly in SVG check, but I cannot upload the fixed file, as I see a message that says "You cannot overwrite this file." on File:Dynamic's_Note_Velocity.svg. What do I do now? --VSimonian (talk) 15:37, 11 April 2017 (UTC)
Nevermind - not sure what happened, but after some time passed, I refreshed the page to try again and was able to upload a working replacement. Thanks for all the help! --VSimonian (talk) 15:55, 11 April 2017 (UTC)

I think this might be a copyvio - the uploader claims to be the author, but the copyright is probably held by ETC, and the author hasn't shown any evidence of permission. What should I do? Is there a way to tag an image for a license review? --Alex Cohn (talk) 18:30, 5 April 2017 (UTC)

Picture Upload Failed. Page: Leslie Benzies

Hi there,

I am currently working on updating the wikipedia page of Mr Leslie Benzies on behalf of Mr Benzies himself.

This has been causing difficulties as my colleague has been trying to upload an up to date image of Mr Benzies and the edit keeps being reverted.

Note, We have the complete permissions to use the image on behalf of Mr Benzies himself.

I was wondering how I should go about achieving this edit? The notes say it was reverted on the back of copyright but I believe we have filled out all appropriate copyright submissions with the appropriate templates.

Since then I have also tried to upload the picture through wikimedia commons rather than to the page directly so that another user could upload it for me (my account is not confirmed) but am receiving an error every time I try to upload...

Any help would be great thanks!

You haven't made any uploads to Commons, there are no entries in the filter log for your account, and you haven't told us what the error message you received actually said, so no one will be able to help you with the issues on Commons, but you should probably start by reading Commons:Guidance for paid editors. This is more of an English Wikipedia issue, but you and your colleagues must disclose your paid conflict of interest there, and you should all stop editing your client's article. Transparent background

Can someone make transparent background for this signature? Thanks. --Hedda Gabler (eski) (talk) 10:52, 9 April 2017 (UTC)

It's probably better to ask at Commons:Graphic Lab/Illustration workshop, but before doing so, the copyright situation should be cleared up. Why would Kingbjelica be the copyright holder of Sabahattin Ali's signature? That seems highly unlikely. It is somewhat more likely (but far from certain) that it might be in the public domain. However, the (real) author hasn't been dead long enough for his works to be in the public domain yet, and Commons:When to use the PD-signature tag doesn't have an entry for Turkey. AdelineMx, welcome to Wikimedia. Before you go further, I should caution you that Wikipedia has rules regarding editing where you have a conflict of interest, and puff pieces are not accepted. Wikipedia is not there to advertise your band, they must be notable first.
Regarding your image query, we prefer that people upload images they took themselves as it means they are not uploading images they just found somewhere. However, in circumstances such as these, we do have a process for dealing with it. If you are the copyright holder of the images, you can get in contact with OTRS via am email address at this link. You will need to confirm that you are the copyright holder of the image, or otherwise have the rights to release it. They will guide you through the process. -mattbuck (Talk) 21:08, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

I uploaded a movie poster and book cover to Commons under fair use licensing but the image Marx Returns promo.gif was deleted. There are numerous examples of book covers and movie posters hosted under fair use criteria on Commons e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Galaxy-express-999-1979-poster.jpg So how do I upload this? @Rachel0898: Please see Commons:Fair use. Fair use is strictly not accepted here on Commons. The link you stated here is on English Wikipedia, not on Commons. Note that you must follow the strict non-free content criteria there, otherwise your fair-use uploads will be deleted there. Thanks, Poké95 03:20, 14 April 2017 (UTC)

If the uploader is the copyright-holder, then he/she needs to grant an appropriate license (pretty much the most restrictive that qualifies is CC-BY-SA). See COM:OTRS for how to provide that on a previously published work like this. If the uploader is not the copyright-holder, then he/she needs to contact the copyright holder to send that permission, again per COM:OTRS. But if they are not willing to grant such a license, then the image can't be on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 23:59, 14 April 2017 (UTC)

Licenses for images

Which of licenses are recommended forː

  • Photos on the field,
  • Photos from own collections,
  • Photos of models, maps and scales,
  • Photos of the museum facilities?
Why do You delete my original records of such origin?ǃ

Yahadzija (talk) 20:32, 14 April 2017 (UTC)

  • No idea what you mean by "Photos on the field" or "Photos of... scales"; "Photos from own collections": if you happen to own a photo, that doesn't mean you own the copyright; "models and maps" would typically be copyrighted by the person who made the model or map, photographing it doesn't change that; "Photos of the museum facilities", assuming you took the photo yourself, will vary by country depending on their laws about freedom of panorama. Of course, if you didn't take them yourself, then you are probably not in a position to grant any rights.
  • It would help a lot if you would ask about specific deletions rather than something this general. - Jmabel ! talk 00:08, 15 April 2017 (UTC)
I can tell you, though, for example, that File:Batonian.jpg got deleted because you claimed it as your own work, when it is an obvious derivative of File:Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna June 2006 031.jpg, which is not you work and which you did not credit. - Jmabel ! talk 00:11, 15 April 2017 (UTC)

How do I license my SVG version of this PNG image?

I made an SVG version of this image, which is virtually identical. I've gathered from this that I should upload it seperately, but under what license, and how do I use that license? None of the options UploadWizard gives me seem to be applicable. Also, what should the filename be; "Var mass system.SVG"? Illiteration (talk) 23:53, 14 April 2017 (UTC)

  • File:Var mass system.svg would be appropriate. The original File:Var mass system.PNG was released into the public domain, so you can theoretically do almost whatever you want, but since there is presumably no creative element in deriving an SVG, the appropriate thing would probably be to release it as {{CC-0}}. • Thanks! I uploaded the image to Commons, as you can see from the first link in your response no longer being red. I modified w:Tsiolkovsky rocket equation to use the new image, and I tagged the old image appropriately. Anyway, given this is my first time doing this, did I do anything wrong? I noticed the licensing section of the page for my image is different from the licensing section of the old one. Illiteration (talk) 00:58, 15 April 2017 (UTC)

Uploading Copyrighted Image with Permission from Holder

Hello,

I have been in contact with a naval museum which has given permission to me to upload and use several portraits which are in fact copyrighted, but the museum holds the license and has given expressed permission to use them in the wikipedia page representing the subject.

May I have information on which options to select during the upload process, I don't seem to see where I can type in the details of the granted permission or where I can submit the evidence to.

Thank you, and best regards, --Clevermercury (talk) 13:15, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

I'm afraid permission for you to use the portraits only on a specific Wikipedia page is nowhere near sufficient. Commons only hosts content that is free for anyone to use for any purpose. Please see Commons:OTRS for instructions on how to obtain and submit an appropriate permission statement. LX (talk, contribs) 14:24, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

Uploading a photo for a biography as a public domain photo

Hello, I am preparing a bio of a foundation executive and the foundation has provided me with a photo of the executive that they obtained from a photographer. The jpeg, however, is electronically tagged with the copyright belonging to the photographer. What is the best way to proceed so that the photo can be properly uploaded to Wikimedia Commons as a public domain photo? Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Brucelieberman (talk • contribs) 17:51, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

You should obtain a permission from the photographer to upload the file under a free license. Ruslik (talk) 20:09, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

Locating images

Some images such as Geograph ones have coordinates. Is there any way of finding photos taken nearest specified coordinates? Dudley Miles (talk) 09:19, 18 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi Dudley Miles! Next to the coordinates at, for example, File:WWII Norcon pillbox, Docking (geograph 2736259).jpg, there's a link that says "View this and other nearby images on: OpenStreetMap" that shows you a map with nearby photos. You can also click on coordinates themselves, which will show a tool called Geohack. If you scroll down to the Photos heading, there's a link to another tool called Proximityrama that shows a gallery of nearby photos. LX (talk, contribs) 10:05, 18 April 2017 (UTC)
Many thanks for your help LX. Is there a way of just doing it from the coordinates to save time first locating a photo near the location you are interested in? Dudley Miles (talk) 10:25, 18 April 2017 (UTC)
Dudley Miles: Sure. If you already know the decimal coordinates, you can just put those straight into the URLs:

How to create a "No known copyright restrictions" template for a museum?

I think have identified the wrong copyright license tag while uploading 5 images of artwork created by Amanda Snyder. Portland Art Museum has many of her works available in their Online Collections with the notice, "No known copyright restrictions". Using the Commons Upload Wizard, I thought the correct license was the CC0, but I now think that was an error, and I need a template specific to the Portland Art Museum, like the ones in this category. I've been editing Wikipedia for almost 3 years, and have used templates, but never created one. Help, please? (Oh, and forgiveness for selecting the wrong license tag, too?) My own work file deleted

hi, User:Jcb deleted photo File:Mixed Ukrainian-Russian writing of "Putin Hello" at the fence at Kerch, Crimea, August 2014.jpg, which is my own work, though I did previously published it at my blog. he said that I have to contact OTRS. at the same time I see here https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:OTRS#When_contacting_OTRS_is_unnecessary that I don't have to contact OTRS if the file is mine and previously published at my website. Could someone please clarify the situation, give me instructions on how to restore the file or restore it if no additional steps are needed. Best, --Pozytyv (talk) 13:02, 19 April 2017 (UTC)

If you put a valid free license at your website (see COM:L), you may request undeletion without using OTRS (see COM:UDR). Jcb (talk) 14:36, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
Jcb, thank you for clarification! I did that. hopefully ok this time.. Best, --Pozytyv (talk) 20:20, 19 April 2017 (UTC)

Other editors, please help as I don't trust User:Jcb because he deleted my work without any explanations, though he did see that I was trying to save the file. So, according to COM:L, I can upload files created entirely by myself. This is exactly what I did. I think that the fact that I posted this file somewhere else is absolutely secondary. Isn't this correct? Or User:Jcb is correct, and I have to add free license to it at my website? and what if I just delete this file from my website? Any help appreciated, especially with links. Best, --Pozytyv (talk) 15:34, 19 April 2017 (UTC)

No file is ever deleted without explanation; there is always an entry in the deletion log with a reason provided. Furthermore, Jcb's response above matches the information provided by Commons:OTRS#When contacting OTRS is unnecessary that you yourself linked to, so I fail to see why you wouldn't trust that.
Unfortunately, we get a lot of uploads from people who grab files from the Internet while claiming that it's their own work. Since accounts here are anonymous, the licensing of previously published content can only be verified by license review or via e-mail. If the site is indeed your own, adding licensing information should be far easier than filling out forms or continued debate here. Deleting the file from your site will accomplish nothing at this point. LX (talk, contribs) 18:01, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
LX, thank you for your reply. it's okay, I also normally fail to see what I don't want to see.. As for the second part, it was really useful and much appreciated! I added license and added file to COM:UDR. Best, --Pozytyv (talk) 20:18, 19 April 2017 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Instituto de ciencia.jpg

--Yurien30 (talk) 18:12, 19 April 2017 (UTC)

Oops! It looks like you forgot to describe the problem you're having, Yurien30. As explained in the beautifully salmon-coloured box on the file description, you did not provide sufficient information on the photo's copyright status. Since we only host free content here on Commons, and the file is unlikely to be in the public domain, you presumably have some reason to believe that the copyright holder has released the photo under a free license. (If you don't, then you shouldn't have uploaded it.) You'll need to provide information on which license that is. You'll also need to provide some evidence to support that, like a verifiable source link showing the file published under said license. I could only find a lower-resolution version obstructed by some kind of logo(?) at https://allevents.in/varadero/xi-encuentro-de-editores-de-revistas-cient%C3%ADficas-y-divulgativas/208299876312714, and there's no sign of any free licensing there. IWM images

Imperial War Museum (IWM) have numerous images posted on Wiki Commons. But they are not available for any kind of use, you have to pay. They just quoted me over $1000 AUD to use an image in a documentary.

Should their images be on this site?

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:From_Hairdresser_To_Waaf-_Training_For_Life_in_the_Women%27s_Auxiliary_Air_Force,_UK,_1942_D6847.jpg

Cheers Su SuFish (talk) 14:11, 20 April 2017 (UTC)

@SuFish: Refer to User:Fæ/email/IWM. Yes the image is public domain. By attempting to charge you 1000 AUD, the IWM is deliberately choosing to make money from blatant copyfraud. It is very sad that the IWM has apparently no ethical members on its board of trustees that would be interested in ensuring that reuse of public domain images for the public benefit is supported by their organization, even though this is written into their mission as set by the government. I would be interested in writing to the IWM's legal team about your case, could you email me offline on https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:EmailUser/Fæ ? Thanks -- (talk) 15:56, 20 April 2017 (UTC)

The more complete and truthful answer is that legal precedent varies across jurisdictions (and even within jurisdictions) as to the extent to which reproducing public domain content by photographing or scanning it gives rise to new copyright (or related rights). Wikimedia Commons has decided to ignore these variations. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag and Commons:Reuse of PD-Art photographs. LX (talk, contribs) 19:29, 20 April 2017 (UTC)
If you have a UK legal precedent please provide a link to it. Until there is a non-hypothetical case, or the IWM provides legally meaningful evidence, these IWM archive photographs are public domain. Thanks -- (talk) 19:43, 20 April 2017 (UTC)
Fæ, as you know, what we know is documented at the links I provided. SuFish: Please note that regardless of how certain some people here may be of the legal situation, no one here can provide you with any actual legal advice. LX (talk, contribs) 19:56, 20 April 2017 (UTC)
What I know, is the same as is reproduced at m:Wikilegal/Sweat_of_the_Brow. Anyone who wants to pay money to an IP lawyer to tell them the same thing, would be well advised to start by providing the lawyer with that link. In the meantime, these images are public domain, correctly, and available on this site for the public to reuse. Even the IWM is not prepared to go into writing to create a takedown notice, most likely because strategically they dare not set a legal precedent against their financial interests of perpetrating copyfraud on the public which relies on ignorance of the actual state of UK law. Thanks -- (talk) 20:03, 20 April 2017 (UTC)

Photos donated to the United States

Correct me if I'm wrong, but works that are "donated to the United States" are, per the deed of gift, in the public domain, no? I was looking through this photograph collection at the JFK Library and the photos have indeed been donated as such. If they are in the public domain, what do I tag them with for justification? To say that they are the "original work of the United States federal government" would be misleading and incorrect. -Indy beetle (talk) 00:53, 21 April 2017 (UTC)

@Indy beetle: It appears Sven Walnum, photographer, donated either the collection, his rights, or both to the U.S. That did not put his works into the public domain, it may have just transferred his rights. Since he died in 2011, his works' copyrights will not expire until January 1, 2072. The U. S. Congress could put anything the U. S. has into the public domain, but they are not likely to.   — Jeff G. ツ 22:42, 21 April 2017 (UTC)

How can you import subtitles from a YouTube video to a file already on Commons?

Hi, at this file: File:President Obama Delivers a Statement on the Paris Agreement.webm (which comes from YouTube), there are no subtitles here on Commons, but there are some on the YouTube source video. Seagull123: The transcript is available by clicking on "… More" below the video on Youtube and then selecting "Transcript", but it doesn't contain complete timing information, and it would take some scripting or manual work to transform that into something useful. It seems Youtube doesn't make the original srt or WebVTT subtitles available directly, but there are services that let you extract them, such as http://ccsubs.com/. Donating photographs?

- Ernie Phelps — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eepjr24 (talk • contribs) 02:32, 23 April 2017 (UTC)

  • Comment (not a full answer):
    • Royalty-free is not quite enough. See Commons:Project scope#Required licensing terms. Usually the easiest way to meet those requirements is to grant a CC-BY-SA license.
    • Other than that, the main issue would be whether anyone would be interested in scanning these; if they are high-quality and/or of unusual subjects (things we don't already have), the answer might well be yes. Otherwise, it's unlikely someone would want to take that on. - Jmabel ! talk 04:21, 23 April 2017 (UTC)

Determining the copyright status of United Press International Photos

I'm curious as to how to determine the copyright status of UPI photos found at the Library of Congress. I'm specifically looking at this photo. The LOC's rights advisory page for UPI photos is relatively ambiguous about the matter. However, there are other UPI photos that have made it onto the commons (like this one) under a "PD-Pre1978" tag. thumb This is a photo of an aviation Type Certificate for a Captain for an Airbus A320. A document which is somewhat similar to a London taxi-driver license for a person that already has a common driving license. An administrator now states it has a copyright belonging to the instructor at Airbus Industries, Toulouse , France who was responsible for the education of pilots who are about to change aircraft to an Airbus A320, and who signed the certificate ! This sounds totally wrong to me. The instructor receives salary from Airbus Industries, and there is nothing of artistic value on the certificate. It was uploaded by me as "own work" since I took the shot of it. I didn't know how to proceed elsewise, but any copyright according to French or international law can't surely exist in this case. (It belonged to my dad, who sadly passed away in August last summer) Help is wanted, if possible. Boeing720 (talk) 07:33, 24 April 2017 (UTC)

Hello. The image [2] of Australian origin is in the Public Domain, and the “copyright-expired” template indicates that: “You must also include a United States public domain tag to indicate why this work is in the public domain in the United States.” A couple of questions, please… do I need to add a tag? If so, is the tag: “{ { PD-US-no notice } }” the correct option? Tortillovsky (talk) 21:36, 24 April 2017 (UTC)

According to the list of options[3] the tag means: "published in the United States between 1923 and 1963, with its copyright not renewed." and according to the file description, the image is from 1943-1944 (70+ years). Tortillovsky (talk) 22:40, 24 April 2017 (UTC)
My mistake. Tortillovsky (talk) 01:11, 25 April 2017 (UTC)
To make Jmabel’s question more concise, what makes you think it was published in the US? From a quick glance at the source it appears to have been taken by an Australian in India who brought it home, then at some point donated or bequeathed it to the archive, which digitized & published it on its website. At any rate, I think a more promising line of inquiry would be to determine its status in Australia as of 1 January 1996: if it was PD then & there, it can be tagged with {{PD-1996}} under criterion #3.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:02, 25 April 2017 (UTC)
Thanks Jmabel. Thanks Odysseus1479. I just noticed that the image (Australian War Memorial - Collection: Photograph P02366.001)[4] is also under Creative Commons license; "no copyright", Public Domain Mark 1.0 [5] Do I still need to find out its status in Australia as of 1 January 1996? Does a tag need to be added? It makes me think that that CC's license would make it also PD in the U.S.; is this correct? I appreciate your help. Tortillovsky (talk) 01:04, 25 April 2017 (UTC)
I suppose that design was published without complying with US formalities when it was painted on an aircraft. As a non-photographic artistic work, it would be public domain in Australia if it the creator died before 1 January 1955, but Template:PD-Australia doesn't mention the case of anonymous / unknown artist. --ghouston (talk) 02:17, 25 April 2017 (UTC)
I think you are right.Tortillovsky (talk) 02:22, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

I believe that the image needs to be added to " Category:CC-PD-Mark "[6] Tortillovsky (talk) 02:22, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

The PD Mark just says that the Australian War Memorial believe it to be public domain in Australia, which should be the case both for the photo (taken before 1955) and the artwork (apparently anonymous works get 70 years under the currently law, but it may have been less previously.) --ghouston (talk) 02:48, 25 April 2017 (UTC)
That’s why I was wondering about Australian law before 2014 or whatever the template cites. If the rights on anonymous works (both original & photo) expired 50 years after creation (similar to other Commonwealth countries at the time), that would have been 1993 or ’94, therefore wouldn‘t have received an extension in the USA.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 03:56, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

Geograph image with licence not listed by Upload Wizard

I wish to upload an image from geograph, but the image licence is described as "Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0 Generic (CC BY-SA 2.0)", which is not one of the licences listed when uploading using the upload wizard. Can the image be uploaded? PaleCloudedWhite (talk) 14:40, 23 April 2017 (UTC)

Sure. Just select "Another reason not mentioned above" and "The license is described by the following wikitext" and then type in {{cc-by-sa-2.0}}. Before uploading, be sure to search to make sure the file doesn't already exist on Commons. LX (talk, contribs) 15:04, 23 April 2017 (UTC)
Thanks. How can I make sure that the file isn't already on Commons? PaleCloudedWhite (talk) 15:20, 23 April 2017 (UTC)
What's the address of the file you have in mind? LX (talk, contribs) 15:28, 23 April 2017 (UTC)
It's http://www.geograph.ie/photo/5221846. (PS Is that "hotlinking"? The geograph page advises against hotlinking, but I'm not sure what it is.) PaleCloudedWhite (talk) 15:37, 23 April 2017 (UTC)
That file does not seem to be on Commons yet. (I searched for "5221846" and "Dark Hedges near Armoy".) And no, that would not be an example of hotlinking. Hotlinking means including an image on a web page in such a way that the web page gets loaded from your own server, while the hotlinked image gets loaded from the original source server. LX (talk, contribs) 17:11, 23 April 2017 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) Not 100% positive myself, but I think it means displaying the image on another website by accessing it directly from the Geograph servers, instead of making a local copy—which the MediaWiki software here won‘t let you do anyway, so I’m pretty sure you‘re safe. Note the usual way of formatting external links is in single brackets, optionally followed by a space and some hypertext, like this: [http://www.geograph.ie/photo/5221846 image page here], which yields image page here.
I searched for the file number and got nothing, and the image doesn‘t appear in Dark Hedges (where there are a couple quite similar)—so unless it’s been oddly renamed and un- or mis-categorized, we probably don‘t have it already.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 17:18, 23 April 2017 (UTC)
I've uploaded it - it's to the right. Is it possible to crop it so it isn't so wide, or do I have to do that elsewhere and upload a cropped version separately? (I tried the edit tab but that seemed only to allow adjustment of text) PaleCloudedWhite (talk) 18:28, 23 April 2017 (UTC)
A significantly altered version, such as a substantially cropped version, should be uploaded under a different name, as noted in Commons:Overwriting existing files. As for File:Geograph-5221846-by-Colin-Park.jpg, the source should contain enough information to allow others to verify the licensing. There are millions of photos from Geograph, so "geograph" doesn't really accomplish that. Luckily, Odysseus1479 has fixed that issue. LX (talk, contribs) 19:58, 23 April 2017 (UTC)
Note that English Wikipedia has the Annotated image template, which allows an image to be cropped for display without altering the source file; see the documentation at that link for details.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 20:09, 23 April 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for the help. I cropped the file at picresize.com and uploaded it again. I didn't adjust the title given it by the software, and assumed it would replace the first upload, which must, I thought, have the same title. I didn't notice that the software had given the second upload a slightly different title. Does it matter that there are now 2 very similar images existing together? (Second upload shown to the right - the dimensions are more in line with standard Wikipedia thumbs). PaleCloudedWhite (talk) 21:37, 24 April 2017 (UTC)
That's no problem. As mentioned above, the files should have different names. (Adding "(cropped)" might have been more descriptive that changing the capitalisation, but it's no big deal.) I edited the file descriptions slightly to link the files to one another. LX (talk, contribs) 09:48, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi, I have a logo for my business that was created by my designer. I have full use of the logo and I simply want to have it in a location so that Wikidata can reference it (I presume that is here?)

I do not want to use an incorrect license as the logo is not Trademarked. I want it to be used by Wikidata but I don't want somebody to just be able to claim ownership of it. Could somebody help me understand how I should upload this or if I am even going about this in the right way to achieve Wikidata referencing.

Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Addypearce (talk • contribs) 19:14, 13 April 2017 (UTC)

I have a bunch of questions before I can give you a good answer.
  • Is the logo complex enough to be copyrightable or is it simply text and very simple geometric shapes?
    • If it is copyrightable, who owns the copyright of the logo? You or the designer? (The designer would own it unless the rights have been explicitly transferred.)
    • If it is copyrightable, understand that we can accept it on Commons only if you offer a sufficiently free license. If, as you say, you don't have trademark protection, I personally would advise you against granting such a license (I am not a lawyer, but I'd really advise you to consult one before doing such a thing), which means you couldn't upload it here.
  • Is the company in question already written about in Wikipedia and/or does it have a Wikidata entry?
- Jmabel ! talk 21:48, 13 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi Jmabel,

Thanks for your reply. The logo is not overly complex and is mostly just text. I (as my company) did purchase a licence for an image used in the logo (a strawberry). You can see the logo in question in the top left of the site https://www.strawberry7.com. The designer has transferred the rights to me, including the artwork. The logo is copyrighted under UK law as it is an original work and logo as stated here http://www.copyrightservice.co.uk/copyright/p01_uk_copyright_law. Therefore, from what you have said, it would not be a good idea to put it on unless I obtain trademark protection?

I am inquiring about having my company placed within the Wikidata and Wikipedia areas but it is difficult to understand what exactly qualifies as entries and what the requirements are, so I am in still in the process. I was attempting to put my logo on here to further help linking from Wikidata and Wikipedia.

Just as a measure - how do most businesses go about this? Are most business logos on here Trademarked?

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Addypearce (talk • contribs) 19:31, 16 April 2017 (UTC)

  • The thing with the actual berry is probably just complicated enough to be copyrightable.
  • As I understand it, most logos of existing UK businesses claim at at least a common law trademark, if not a registered one.
  • To place that logo on Commons, you'd need to grant a sufficiently free license. As I understand it, at that point, your only real protection against a very similar logo from a competitor would be trademark law, not copyright law. - Jmabel ! talk 22:44, 16 April 2017 (UTC)
  • Jmabel is on the mark here. Given that your logo with the strawberry is likely copyrightable (which is my sense as well), then all you need to do to upload that logo to Commons is be willing to release the use of the image of the logo under a suitable free license (i.e., probably CC-BY-SA 4.0). The safest thing to do immediately afterwards is submit a statement to our OTRS team in which you identify yourself as the copyright holder of the image and make a formal declaration of its availability under a free license. You can do this via our interactive release generator here. Once the statement has been processed, it will be marked as having a permission statement and will be available for general public reuse. To the extent that you are concerned about trademark abuse, Commons won't be able to do much to help you: all you are doing by releasing the rights to the logo is making it available for others to see, use, and reuse— you are not surrendering its trademark! We have thousands of logos in our repository which are fully trademark protected and which are in no danger of being used for a trademark violation. So please feel free to upload what you've got! Thanks! KDS4444 (talk) 13:07, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

Can i Upload A Gameplay I made by myself

Hi , I was willing to upload gameplay of some games . Those gameplay are made by myself . Is it ok if i upload them here ? — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 202.134.11.150 (talk) 06:31, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

  • If the gameplay includes no copyrighted imagery— scenery, characters, objects, etc.— and if you wrote the software program yourself and drew all of its image content on your own, then sure. Otherwise, anything you upload will be deleted on sight. "Gameplay" is not considered a creative product to which a user can own an exclusive copyright. KDS4444 (talk) 13:11, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

Question about SVG files displaying oddly

Hi

I'm working on extracting graphs from UNESCO open license publications and uploading them to Commons with a few other people. I'm having problems with the svg files, for some reason when they are uploaded both thumbnails and the Commons page for the files crop the images and does some odd things with the formatting but when I click on the image to see the full size versions they look fine. We're using the latest version of Inkscape and saving as Plain SVG format. Is this a fault on Commons?

Thanks

John Cummings (talk) 11:29, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi John! The Mediawiki software that Commons and the other Wikimedia projects use unfortunately maintains an antiquated practice of rasterising SVG files when displaying thumbnails and file description pages, and it uses very limited and buggy software to do so. One such limitation is that only a specific set of fonts is available. I think a major reason those files look a bit odd is that the fallback font that gets used is much wider than the font you used (Myriad Pro). Further reading: Help:SVG. LX (talk, contribs) 14:55, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
Hi LX, this is super useful information, thanks very much, do you have a suggestion of font we could use that would be bug free and not cause the issue with font widths being wrong, basically what is a thin font that Commons supports?
Thanks again
--John Cummings (talk) 15:35, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
Liberation is a good choice. It's the default fallback for common fonts like Arial and it has a narrow style as well. You can test how your SVG will be rendered before uploading using Commons:Commons SVG Checker or by overwriting File:Test.svg. clpo13(talk) 16:34, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
Thanks so much Clpo13, will try it out :) --John Cummings (talk) 16:38, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

Well that didn't work very well, the text still got jumbled, some spaced out more, some became clumped together, even using a font that Commons specifically supports. I managed to get a version that displays by vectorising the text but this means that it can't be altered.... Any ideas? --John Cummings (talk) 17:03, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

@John Cummings: yes, there are more problems with the renderer than just the choice of font, going back years & years, but the developers always seem to have other priorities. I recently did a map, deliberately choosing Liberation Sans & Liberation Serif for their alleged compatibility with the system, and it got mangled anyway; like you I resorted to converting all the text to paths. (I have some tweaks to make, and this time I’ll use fonts I like better, considering I have to convert them anyway!) I read somewhere that the renderer has issues with the way Adobe Illustrator specifies fonts, which I thought might be my problem—but obviously that’s not the case here, since you’re evidently using Inkscape. I’ve also seen a suggestion that spacing problems might go away if the text is made big enough, but something like a map could get absurdly large if all the type has to be headline-sized … At any rate, if people want to translate or edit the text, at least they can download the previous ‘bad‘ version to get a fully editable file to start from.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:59, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
Thanks Odysseus1479, I will stick to my current method then. Since the .pdfs the images come from are available online it is possible for people to extract the graphics again. --John Cummings (talk) 22:05, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

Then how come i upload my film design poster to upload which is owned by me as a film director...

  • Michael: in order to upload your film poster to Commons you will need to provide evidence that you are the copyright holder to the image. Normally the copyright holder is the artist who created the image for you, and if that is so, then you will need to have that artist agree to release the image under a suitable license. Once you establish who owns the copyright, you should submit a statement releasing the image under a copyright we can accept. Do not simply upload the image multiple times under different names. Use the release generator to create the release statement, and then email this statement to our OTRS team along with the URL of the deleted image file. The image can be undeleted one you have submitted your statement! If this goes awry for any reason, you should also be able to upload the image to the English Wikipedia directly, even if you are not the copyright holder, under what is called a "fair use" argument. Instructions for fair use are located under Wikipedia:Non-free content. Good luck! KDS4444 (talk) 14:21, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

  • If you try to clean it, you will notice that a phone pole has been poorly removed, and it will take quite a bit if work to make it really clean. I don't think the colors in the image are particularly bad. But if you want to try to clean it up, it's under a CC-BY-SA license, so you can adapt the work as you wish, as long as you attribute the original work to the original uploader (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work), and upload a new version (under a different name) under a similar license. Use {{Derived from}} in your new image and place {{Derivative versions}} on the original. Then you can change what image the article uses. - Jmabel ! talk 15:13, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

Image Uploading

Hi, I was wondering if it is possible to upload an image of a soda can. I am working on the article 1893 by the makers of Pepsi-cola and I wanted to add images of the cans for each flavor. I'm not sure if this is possible as the cans contain company logos. Also, is there a difference between a picture of the can from the company website and a picture of the can that I take myself. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bigotti (talk • contribs) 16:46, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

  • There are a number of issues at play here. The Pepsi logo, as you can see here, is not protected by copyright, and anyone is free to photograph it and upload images that include it whenever they want. However, you almost certainly may not upload an image from the company website unless that image has been clearly marked as being freely licensed (which I very much doubt is the case). You ARE welcome, however, to upload any and all pictures you take yourself of as many Pepsi cans as you can find! So long as the logo is not copyright protected (which it is not) photos uploaded by our users are perfectly acceptable. Go for it! But do NOT use anything from the Pepsi website! Hey there! I have explicit permission to use my evolutionary rescue image (it is Figure 1 from "Evolutionary Rescue in a changing world" by Stephanie Carlson, published in TREES (Trends in Ecology and Evolution). I have permission from the publisher and the author via email as long as a link to the TREES home page (publication site) in the caption and retain the copyright mark in the image (I did). I don't know how to attach the picture here, but its "theoretical depiction of evolutionary rescue" in the wikicommons. This is for a class project that is due TOMORROW. So I need an urgent answer. We needed to make a wikipedia page on an assigned topic.

--Helocke (talk) 17:09, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

Did you follow the first steps? The part about free licenses would be of particular interest for you. A permission would need to be sent to COM:OTRS (by the copyright holder) and it would need to include a statement about the free license that the image may be published under.
As the image is rather trivial, the easiest and quickest solution would be to take the data and draw a diagram yourself based on the same data this image was based on. As only the representation is copyrightable, not the data, this would make you the copyright holder. As copyright holder you are free to choose any license you wish. --rimshottalk 21:11, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
A requirement to retain the copyright mark is definitely not permissible on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 23:31, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
If we cut out the figure caption, can this image be kept with {{PD-text}} and/or {{PD-shape}}? Because the data is not copyrightable and the representation is simple enough and below COM:TOO. --Wcam (talk) 01:16, 27 April 2017 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding Chantelle Logo.png

  • There was never a Chantelle Logo.png. Is that just a proposed place to put it?
  • Without seeing the logo, I can't answer this. Either it is (1) simple enough to be ineligible for copyright, (2) old enough to be in the public domain, or (3) not something we can have on Commons without a license from the rights-holder. Unless you are the rights-holder (I'm guessing not, since it would then be a conflict of interest for you to be writing the article), you are in no position to grant such a license. You could contact the company about that, but it is very unlikely that a company will free-license its logo. - Jmabel ! talk 15:36, 27 April 2017 (UTC)

Use of image from an Australian art gallery

Hello I live in England. I am preparing a Wikipedia article on a British Artist (Madeline Green, 1884-1947). One of her works (Glasgow, painted about 1930) is held by the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia, and the image is displayed on their website. I emailed the Gallery on 17 April 2017:

______________________________________________________________

Hello

As you will see from the attached draft, I am writing a piece about the artist Madeline Green, to expand on the very short entry about her on Wikipedia [8]

Thanks to your colleague Brooke I have a scan of the catalogue entry from your 2007 exhibition “Modern Britain, 1900-1960”, in which Green’s Glasgow was displayed. If possible, I would very much like to include an image of Glasgow [Accession Number   4468-3] in the Wikipedia page. I think it would add considerably to the write-up, especially as I quote from your catalogue about the painting.

Thank you.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards John

Do I need to ask the Gallery for further authority before I can upload the image?

Your help would be much appreciated.

Commons doesn't really need permission from somebody who made a copy of the painting. Her work is already public domain in Australia, but I'm not sure about UK. Since she died in 1947, at worst it would be 1 January 2018. However, Commons also requires it to be public domain in the US, which I think is 95 years from the "publication" date. --ghouston (talk) 11:07, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
Given which, you might do better for now to upload it directly to the English-language Wikipedia on a fair use basis. I would also add that, insofar as the NGV may hold any copyright, the above release is useless for Commons: among other things, permission to use the image in a particular article is not equivalent to a free license. - Jmabel ! talk 15:30, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
Thank you both. Picking up Jmabel's point, what do I specifically have to do to "upload it directly to the English-language Wikipedia on a fair use basis"? How do I answer the questions when using the upload wizard? Jgdc47B (talk) 18:56, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
Uploading on en-wiki has nothing to do with Commons' upload wizard. Use en:Special:Upload. Instead of the {{Information}} template, use en:Template:Non-free use rationale. - Jmabel ! talk 23:41, 27 April 2017 (UTC)

cannot link from commons to French wikipedia (fr:w)

In Wkimedia Commons and "wikimania2017.wikimedia.org", [[:fr:w:Julia Cagé|Cagé]] links to the English-language Wikipedia, not the French. This same markup in Wikiversity links to the French-language Wikipedia.

I discovered this in creating "https://wikimania2017.wikimedia.org/wiki/Submissions/Building_Wikinews_into_the_premier_news_site_worldwide".

I thought someone might want to know. DavidMCEddy (talk) 01:43, 28 April 2017 (UTC)

fr:Julia Cagé and w:fr:Julia Cagé both work. According to en:Help:Interwikimedia links, fr:w:Julia Cagé should work as well, but it doesn't. As far as I know, that's been the case for a long time. LX (talk, contribs) 09:01, 28 April 2017 (UTC)
Thanks. Fixed, per your suggestion. (Thanks also to the link to en:Help:Interwikimedia links: I have trouble remembering how to find that.) DavidMCEddy (talk) 13:00, 28 April 2017 (UTC)

Username Change.

Resolved

I need to edit my name. I have found no way to do that. Do I have to make another account to change my name from Mike to Michael? Or can I edit it and still keep this account?

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MikeJiroch (talk • contribs) 00:58, 29 April 2017 (UTC)

World War I soldier

Hi, guys. I've done some categorization on Commons, but this is the first time I'm creating a category for a soldier: Category:Béla Békéssy. Could someone check if the super-categories I've added make sense, and if I need anything more? I just don't want the page to be unnoticed because of my autopatrol bit. Thanks in advance. – b_jonas 15:31, 29 April 2017 (UTC)

It looks fine. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:47, 29 April 2017 (UTC)

Mystery message from bot, and longstanding unprocessed OTRS emails

I'd appreciate help with both of these:

  • (a) I have no idea what the bot is complaining about here [9]. How is {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}, which is right there on the description page, "not a license"???
  • (b) I'm really getting nervous about this [10].

EEng (talk) 02:54, 30 April 2017 (UTC)

@EEng: Those emails in (b) have been received and are in queue. Please understand that the current backlog of the (English) permissions-commons queue is 53 days.   — Jeff G. ツ 03:22, 30 April 2017 (UTC)
OK, thanks, that's fine. What troubled me is that other permissions emails that I know were sent later were processed long ago. Now, what about (a)? What's the issue there? EEng (talk) 03:43, 30 April 2017 (UTC)
The bot was complaining about the first version [11], which didn't have a license template. --ghouston (talk) 04:48, 30 April 2017 (UTC)
Um, would you be surprised if I said that was a completely useless thing for it to do? EEng (talk) 05:46, 30 April 2017 (UTC)
Only with hindsight. It didn't know you were going to add a license two minutes later. --ghouston (talk) 05:56, 30 April 2017 (UTC)
@EEng: If at first you don't add a license, that bot's going to get you.   — Jeff G. ツ 07:55, 30 April 2017 (UTC)
  • Wait a second. I have to apologize to everyone. I come to Commons so seldom, and when the Notifications thingamajig said "Mifterbot left a message on your talk page", I didn't realize that was 19 days ago. I thought it was today. EEng (talk) 08:05, 30 April 2017 (UTC)
