Renaming a file

Hello, I am requesting a file renaming. I would like to rename the file "Roadrunner's Retreat.jpg" to "Road Runner's Retreat.jpg." It will be found much more easily by people searching for pictures of this landmark. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Radtech (talk • contribs) 04:48, 01 July 2016 (UTC)

The correct way to request renaming is to use {{rename}}. This seems to have already been renamed, though. LX (talk, contribs) 05:58, 1 July 2016 (UTC)

Stuart Buchanan/Whitman

Hi, a user on itwiki just realized that this image: File:Stuart Buchanan.jpg is apparently not of en:Stuart Buchanan as the title might imply, but would seem to be en:Stuart Whitman. So the same user (User:Yensiddisney) uploaded an image that is actually Buchanan (File:ST1jpg.jpg), taking it from his Rotten Tomatoes (on a side note, I don't know if it's copyright free, and even if it is, it should be cleaned up in the categories and source). The problem is, reverse searching the first image gives results for both Stuarts, so I really don't know if he's right or not. Can any of you confirm which Stuart is depicted in the smaller image? Thanks, --Amendola90 (talk) 09:24, 2 July 2016 (UTC)

  • Larger versions of File:Stuart Buchanan.jpg are found on the internet (example). In reverse search, it is identified as Whitman almost everywhere and the exceptions, other than the immediate source, seem to be copies of Wikipedia, where the file was inserted in the Buchanan articles by the uploader. The immediate source of the Commons file is a blog page, but the original source is not mentioned and the copyright status is unverified. The statements by the uploader are inconsistent, saying that the author is unknown and that the author died more than 70 years ago. And the date seems to come from nowhere. Better information should be provided.
  • File:ST1jpg.jpg looks like a photograph from circa 1920. It is not really believable that it was taken by the uploader. It could be in the public domain. Better information should be provided. The Commons version seems less cropped than other versions from reverse search, including the one at the site you mentioned. Are you sure it was copied from there?
-- Asclepias (talk) 15:15, 2 July 2016 (UTC)
Hi, I just brought the problem to your attention here, but don't know anything else. As for the second image, I simply indicated what seemed like the most probable source, but apparently that's not it. Sorry if I confused you, i should have worded it better. Anyway, I wrote the uploader in itwiki linking to this discussion, let's see if he comes here. Cheers, --Amendola90 (talk) 22:25, 2 July 2016 (UTC)
The source and contents of this image are completely unclear, I nominated it for deletion. --ghouston (talk) 01:40, 3 July 2016 (UTC)

Shouldn't the category name be "Mountain range of Taiwan" with a lower case "r" instead of "Mountain Range of Taiwan"?

This category was originally named Mountain Range of Taiwan, and should not appear in upper case, because I've never seen "m" used to written "M". From your perspective, Should it be upper case?--Liji (talk) 19:15, 2 July 2016 (UTC)

You are correct, category names should be lowercase except for the first letter and proper nouns. Also, "Category names that refer to type of objects or group of people should generally be in plural form". So it should really be Category:Mountain ranges of Taiwan. See Commons:Naming categories for official guidelines on how to name categories. I'll move that one. BMacZero (talk) 21:12, 2 July 2016 (UTC)

i have created a new page titled Kattapana today. 06/07/2016. i uploaded images on 17/06/2016. how do i transfer my images on to the page 'kattapana ' i created today. my images are on the ogre-bot-newuser gallery page .i had uploaded 8 images.how do i identify myself or copyright my images. also i want to upload a different set of images taken in a different location.should i add it to the existing 8 images in kattapana or start a new page. ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kattapana (talk • contribs) 14:46, 06 July 2016 (UTC)

  • In terms of the page Kattapana, I put two of your images in a gallery. I'm sure you can work out by analogy how to add the others.
  • Your images are implicitly copyrighted. At the moment, we only know you as User:Kattapana. If you want to be known by your actual name, you can start a user page about yourself at that link.
  • The last question I may not understand. You opened an account as User:Kattapana, but of course you can upload images about other topics than Kattapana. Most images do not end up on any named page: the main thing is that by placing them in categories, they end up in category pages. Also, as appropriate they can be used in different Wikimedia projects, such as Wikipedia. - Jmabel ! talk 15:44, 6 July 2016 (UTC)

Namespace for real-life media project pages

Today I had to open a project page for one of Wikimedia Israel's new content projects, and noticed that some similar projects were in the project namespace (e.g. Commons:Château de Versailles), while others in the mainspace (e.g. WikiAir). What is the relevant guideline for this on Commons? —Ynhockey (talk) 17:56, 6 July 2016 (UTC)

There may not be much in terms of guideline, but Help:Namespaces seems to suggest that the right place is the project namespace. The project should probably be categorized in a sub-category of Category:Commons projects. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:41, 6 July 2016 (UTC)

Query regarding the nomination page for deletion

Hey i had shared few of my pictures on wikipedia commons as a part of contest wiki loves earth 2016. It has come to my notice that these pages mentioned below have been nominated for deletion since i had shared from my Facebook. Copyright help regarding File:Antonsaad2.jpg

Hello, I want to edit the license/tag but I can't find where. This person died 67 years ago so I believe it's certainly public domain. Thank you

--Cjr02 (talk) 18:38, 8 July 2016 (UTC)

  • The issue would be when the photographer died, not when the subject of the photo died. Since we don't know who that was, and since thate means it could have been someone quite young in 1940, that person could still be either alive or only recently deceased. So I don't think we can presume public domain.
  • You can't find the license tag because there isn't any. You uploaded this without indicating a license, and since you aren't the person who holds the rights to the image, you can't grant one. Probably the linked source didn't have legal rights to use it either, except on a fair use basis. So unless you can either track down who owns the rights and get their permission, or make a solid case why this would be public domain (laws vary depending on the country of first publication) I'm afraid this wouldn't meet Commons criteria for acceptable provenance. - Jmabel ! talk 19:03, 8 July 2016 (UTC)

Old file formats and missing information

Hi,

I am presently enrolled in an Open Educational Resources 101 course, where I was asked, as an exercise, to upload an image. Firstly, I was pleasantly surprised that I was already registered as a user, and was able to log in. Unfortunately, I did not check to see what uploads I may had already done.

The questionable, mysterious part, is that I picked a random image to upload, and it failed with the massage that this content already exists; ADC animation 20.gif My guess is that either the ANGLE or Canvas platforms use Wikimedia. If that is the case, then there should be a whole bunch of images already uploaded.

To test this theory, I uploaded another file that I own Digitaldice.png, thinking it would behave similarly. But this file uploaded correctly.

So the question is... Is the file ADC animation 20.gif really the only file I had ever previously uploaded? That would be a weird coincidence, or are there a bunch of files somehow hovering around in your database added from ANGEL or Canvas?

Hopefully you can check this and get back to me.

Photos unfairly deleted. don't know how to get help restoring them

Ellen Beltz has deleted several images. The ones that were on the Joseph Fuller page were taken by Joseph Fuller or myself. Se is wrong in claiming that an image was taken from a publication. They were all sent to me by Joseph Fuller, the subject of the article.

AITE Long Shot.jpg AITE Exterior.jpg Old Town Hall Interior.jpg CCNY Longshot.jpg

The Orion's Belt Perless.jpg image which was entered on the Robert Perless page and he sent an email, as requested on the attributions page, saying that he had taken the photo. I was there.(He is my husband.) He took the picture.

What is the problem with you guys? Her saying that the photos are not similar has to do with the way Fuller took the photos. Do we need him to send you an email saying that he is the actual photographer? This is really crazy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eperless (talk • contribs) 14:11, 10 July 2016 (UTC)

In summary, the works of at least four photographers (including a flickr photographer) have been uploaded by one account. This situation is addressed at length on my talk page. Yes, the COM:OTRS process has to be followed for Mr. Fuller. Yes, the COM:OTRS process has to be followed by Mr. Perless. You don't own your husband's copyright while he's alive even if you were standing next to him. Also you need COM:OTRS permission from the flickr photographer and Kyle P. Norton because those pictures are not your own work either. Please dialog with us without getting upset. You have been notified image by image by myself and others of how to fix the problems and have not done it. To call the system "crazy" because you uploaded pictures taken by other people and claimed them as your own work is not fair to the process. You have access to the people who need to give permission, please just follow the process. Cheers! Ellin Beltz (talk) 15:49, 10 July 2016 (UTC)

YouTube screenshots

I want to ask a question. So if i upload a screenshot from a YouTube video and that video gets deleted some time after, will the Commons' admins delete the screenshot? — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 46.130.132.113 (talk) 10:19, 11 July 2016 (UTC)

No they wont. Bigger problem is: are you the owner and therefor do you have the copyright of the video? If you don't have the copyright your screenshot will be deleted as a copyright violation. Dqfn13 (talk) 10:39, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
Let me get it right; So if the screenshot passes the license under "Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)", but a few months or years later the video gets deleted, the screenshot won't be deleted from Commons right? — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 46.130.129.6 (talk) 12:31, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
It depends. If it was taken down by YouTube, it is more likely that the screenshot will be deleted, either for copyright (video was copyright violation) or scope (illegal porn) reasons. Poké95 12:44, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
There is no mechanism by which we (commons) are notified when they (youtube) takes down a video. If someone notices a problem with the file here, the fact that the file no longer exists there (especially if the reason for its removal is license-related) might be used as an argument for deleting it here. But "no longer there" is not even a strict "must remove it here" pathway even if we do know about it. DMacks (talk) 12:53, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
1) If the description page has a free license tag, for example YouTube CC-BY, and 2) if the license of the video was validly offered by the owner of the copyright of whatever is on the screenshot and 3) if the file passed a license review, then that's right. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:03, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
Yes if the license is not free or if it was not offered by the owner of the copyright or if the file did not pass a license review, unless there's another way to verify the license. No if the license is free and it was offered by the owner of the copyright and the file passed a license review. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:03, 11 July 2016 (UTC)

Sorry for all the file copyright mess, I'm here to clean everything about it.

About 27 notifications popped up on my alert box, I was shocked and I knew I did something wrong, so I'm here to told everything about my images, so first I'm gonna say, sorry if there are any inconvenience. (Also sorry for my not really good English)

___

From majorly website and they won't probably take them down:

Yes, these were taken from the web. I took it because a lot of Malaysian doesn't really know what is copyright (like me), and the pages doesn't care about copyright infringement. Well yes, you can delete them. I may ask permissions for the images later in the future.

___

I scan them from my scanner and I had the book and card, if you want the prove, I can show them (not now), but you may delete it (sadface).

It's from this website, and it just a teenager scout troop, and they probably don't know what copyright is and won't take down others' images. (You can message the page or just take)

Notification about possible deletion:

I 100% swear this was taken by me, please don't delete it.

I was about nominate this for deletion, well just delete it.

Question:

  • The author doesn't take note of the copyright of his/her images (like from blogspot or Facebook), how do I know I can reuse the images here?

I am a starter of copyright, sorry for this hot mess. I have the mind to only contribute to Wikipedia and not worrying about copyright. I promise that I will not make these mistakes again and I've read the COM:L. In conclusion, copyright is scary and weird. --NgYShung (talk) 13:06, 11 July 2016 (UTC)

NgYShung Thank you for your comments. To answer your questions, COM:EVID says that it's up to the uploader to provide accurate copyright information about each image, please see COM:L for more help with licensing information. In general, you can't reuse from blogspot or Facebook because those images were not taken by you. For reusing images created by someone else on a blog or Facebook, you have them email COM:OTRS to give permission. And remember the images must also be within COM:SCOPE. Cheers! Ellin Beltz (talk) 18:41, 11 July 2016 (UTC)

"(last page)" missing for the thumbnail preview of DR!

Hello dear ♥ colleagues, If you go to - say - [[Category:Deletion requests July 2016]] and select the thumbnail preview of all files, one can find in the top line both "(previous page)" and "(next page)" but there is no "(last page)"! Can anybody PLEASE (whine) implement such an interlink thingy? Cheers, GeoTrinity (talk) 14:01, 17 July 2016 (UTC) (who is VERY annoyed by all those out of scope, Facebook-like personal picture crap wasting our server space, grrr)

Hello, In this category, the thumbnails are exceptionally sorted by date of request. Clicking on the current date in the navigation bar at the top should take you not too far from the last page of the category, maybe at one or two clicks from it. But I'm not sure if I understood your question, because I don't find your reference to "select the 'thumbnail preview' of all files". -- Asclepias (talk) 15:13, 17 July 2016 (UTC)
Hi, thanks for the reply. Click this link here https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Deletion_requests_July_2016. Then you'll see on the left upper side (previous page) and (next page). Why isn't there a (last page), I wonder? GeoTrinity (talk) 18:43, 17 July 2016 (UTC)
As far as I can tell, categories never have a "last page" link. In ordinary categories, the thumbnails are arranged alphabetically, based on their filenames or on their sort keys. When an ordinary category includes a very large number of files, users usually add an alphabetical navigation bar at the top, so you can bypass the successive "next pages" and go directly where you want by clicking on the letter or letters. But, like I said in my first comment, the thumbnails in the monthly deletion requests categories, like the category you mentioned, are not arranged alphabetically. They are specially arranged in chronological order, based on the dates of the associated deletion requests. Which means that when you want to go to the last page of this category, you want to go to the page that shows the thumbnails of the most recent deletion requests. Logically, the navigation bar added to the top of this category is chronological, not alphabetical. Therefore, clicking on the number of the date of today, in the navigation bar at the top of the category page, will take you directly to either the last page of this category or its second-to-last page or its third-to-last page, depending on the number of requests that were made since the beginning of the day, but anyway close enough to its last page. (Even when a navigation bar was not added to a category, you can achieve the same result by clicking only once on "next page" and then, in the url of the page, replacing everything after "filefrom=" with the letter (in alphabetically ordered categories) or with the number (in chronologically ordered categories) you want to reach.) -- Asclepias (talk) 20:13, 17 July 2016 (UTC)

Embeding Image in LibreOffice Writer

Hi! I 'm working on a Wikibook and want to make also a program for translating wiki code in LibreOffice Writer (so that I can change parts of the book without changing it in wikibooks). I 'm trying to embed images using a command from Andrews Pitonyak book about macros: oGraph.GraphicURL = "http://www.openoffice.org/images/AOO_logos/orb.jpg" Although this command works with other pictures (sometimes with a small delay, during which I see the URL instead of the picture), it doesn't work with wikimedia (although I wait for more than three minutes). Instead of the picture I see in the created document only the URL. Does anybody have any idea, how I can get the picture in my Writer document? Thanx in advance! Are you using image links from Commons, such as [1], and not File pages, which are HTML? --ghouston (talk) 09:09, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
Yes, for example I tried to use https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/19/Fanabe_beach_sunset.jpg It doesn't work... Here is also the macro I'm using, maybe it helps recognise the problem:

sub trial

Dim vCom 'The loaded component

Dim sURL As String

Dim noArgs()

Dim oInsertPoint 'Where the table will be inserted

Dim oGraph

'URL of the document to load

vCom = StarDesktop.LoadComponentFromUrl("private:factory/swriter", "_blank", 0, noArgs())

oGraph = vCom.createInstance("com.sun.star.text.GraphicObject")

With oGraph

.GraphicURL = "https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/19/Fanabe_beach_sunset.jpg"

.AnchorType = com.sun.star.text.TextContentAnchorType.AS_CHARACTER

.Width = 9000

.Height = 6000

End With

oInsertPoint = vCom.Text.getEnd()

oInsertPoint.getText().insertTextContent(oInsertPoint , oGraph, False)

end Sub

(the link in the macro works here just fine...)

Yomomo (talk) 16:43, 11 July 2016 (UTC)

It seems to work for me. I don't know much (well, anything really) about LibreOffice Writer macros, but I set up your macro and when I run it it produces a new document containing the image. This is using Version: 5.1.4.2, Build ID: 1:5.1.4-0ubuntu1. --ghouston (talk) 00:16, 12 July 2016 (UTC)
OK. I used Libre3. It doesn't work there for some reason, but it works with libre4, so it's OK. Thank you once more. Yomomo (talk) 10:54, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

My daughter's name disappeared from a picture with descriptors on Wikimedia Common J

Hi: I am Dr. Jacqueline S Adams. My daughter, a veteran of the Marine Corp Special Opts, her picture with name LTC Regan l Walcott and her descriptor disappeared (her military info0 from the file MARSOC HALO. The pic and descriptor showed a pic of marines (she was 2nd from the last marine parachuting from the plane @Lejeune in Pic. The descriptor said raiders were practicing prior to going to Afghanistan. It listed her name, rank, attachment, and it was her second deployment to Afghanistan.. You can see the Atlantic Ocean near Camp Lejeune as the Marines are repelling from the airplane. The photographer was Steven Foster I believe. Just wondering what happened to the narrative describing my daughter.

Just wondering, as all the information was there on Sunday, July 10th, 2016. Her name, rank and all info about my daughter was not there when I went to the website on Monday, July 11,2016.However the Picture was still there minus her info.

I look forward to your response; and I would like to thank you, and all Marines; concurrently with all Military forces for all you do to keep Americans free. Thank you for all you do......you risk your life in order for us to remain in a free Country.

@Jsadams1938: This file is File:MARSOC HALO jump.jpg. The text was removed by @Jdx: , so I notified him. My guess is that he removed the text because it was formatted very oddly and made the page look unorganized. The information about who is in the picture and what group they belong to is probably important and should be put back in a nicer form. BMacZero (talk) 17:24, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

Copyrighted Photos Deleted

Can anyone explain in layman's terms why film posters I uploaded, which I own the rights to, were deleted from Wikimedia? How do film articles on Wikipedia feature posters or other images and I'm not allowed to? — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheLachrymistFilm (talk • contribs) 18:47, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

  • To the first question: It's to respect and protect the rights of the copyright owner(s). Because anybody could easily copy three images already published, create a Wikimedia account under any username and claim to own the copyright to those works by three artists. That's why Wikimedia must require evidence and, as mentioned in the deletion comment of each file, one way to provide it is to follow the regular procedure, explained in detail on the page Commons:OTRS. If you are the copyright owner, a verification of your identity is necessary to protect your own rights. Also, because in this specific case you're claiming to own the copyrights on works created by three artists, your communication should include a clear statement that the full copyrights were ceded by the artists to you by written contracts. You can ask on the page Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard to know more precisely what the OTRS people will need.
  • To the second question: The English-language Wikipedia has a policy allowing the use of some non-free images under a claim of "fair use". For example, an image of a painting by Salvador Dali is considered fair use to illustrate an article about the work of this artist. However, it may be disputable if it would really be "fair use" to use the non-free works of three artists, say artworks of Juan Luis Garcia, Luke Butland and Michael Baird, to illustrate an article about a different work by different people, say the film The Lachrymist by Matthew Gowan et al. But that would be something to discuss on Wikipedia.
-- Asclepias (talk) 00:16, 13 July 2016 (UTC)
  • With reference to the first question (@Storkk: , @MKFI: ) given an account name that indicates high likelihood that this is the legitimate copyright owner, wouldn't it have made sense to start by opening a discussion with this person rather than deleting first?
  • @TheLachrymistFilm: The situation is as Asclepias described it, but if you are the filmmaker (or represent the filmmaker) and the copyrights have, indeed, been signed over to you, this should be easy to sort out at Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard. I imagine need an email from you from the appropriate domain, but they can tell you more specifically. I hope you understand that this is for your own copyright protection: you wouldn't want just anyone to be able to take an account here, say they were you, and grant rights to these materials. - Jmabel ! talk 01:10, 13 July 2016 (UTC)
  • @Jmabel: I disagree with your assertion that the account name indicates "high likelihood" that this is the legitimate copyright holder, but I wouldn't have objected had someone turned the speedy into a DR. Storkk (talk) 08:23, 13 July 2016 (UTC)

File:Live export cows with feaces on the way to quarantine.jpg
These photos are my own work about live export of animals from Australia to Israel.
The photos were deleted because of the watermark of ww.shiptohell.org.
I represent shiptohell.org, it's just a group of a handful of activists againt live exports.
I sent a letter to permission at wikimedia foundations. Please check it and undelete the photos.
Feel free to change the names of the files, only leave "live export" in the name so it can be found.

  • Please see COM:OTRS and send an email (indicating the names of these photos, your ownership of the rights, and the license granted) as explained there. Once that is processed (typically about a month, I gather there is quite a backlog) they will be restored. - Jmabel ! talk 15:22, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
A month is too long. The problem was that the photos have water mark of a my web page on them. Is it OK to upload the same photos again with the water mark cut off? I am the sole owner of the photos, I took them myself, they are my own work. I just fear that somebody will regard it as a violation and block me. -Assialls (talk) 05:23, 15 July 2016 (UTC)
Were the two photos originally published on a website of your group? If so, can you edit that website? If so, can you mention the free license of the two photos there? We can't speak for them, but maybe that way you could convince an admin to restore the files until the case is decided by OTRS. -- Asclepias (talk) 06:16, 15 July 2016 (UTC)
Or you can re-upload, send to OTRS as described, and mark the images with {{OTRS pending}}, which should probably get them left alone until OTRS can handle them (but this might be complicated by the prior uploads having been deleted). - Jmabel ! talk 15:40, 15 July 2016 (UTC)

resolution requirements/recommendations

Saludos! We will be running two wiki expeditions in September here in Mexico City. We have done this before but one problem is getting photos of decent resolution. In one case, the student shrunk the photos down to an unusable size (faster uploading). The more common problem is that most of our students do no have cameras, not even the tourist kind as they use their cell phones.

I know cells phones at least used to take lousy pictures, which is why initially we required students to have a "real" camera to participate. However, this seems to be unreasonable. So assuming that most will use cell phones, what are the minimums we should require to get decent photos?Thelmadatter (talk) 14:02, 13 July 2016 (UTC)

I suggest to use the full resolution and not reducing the size. Very important is that before uploading a selection is made of the best photos, not uploading blurred photos. It is not a competition of who uploads the most pictures in the shortest time. Also important is to mention what is can be seen on the photo and where exactly the photo is taken. For example in which street, on what market, within which building. Please add also existing categories. Even broad categories such as "Streets in Mexico, D.F." or "Buildings in Mexico, D.F." are better than nothing or a self invented category name. Wouter (talk) 17:46, 13 July 2016 (UTC)
An additional point about smart phones which was mentioned in the Village Pump. Clean the lens of the smart phone carefully from finger grease and other dirt to avoid the typical haze often found when using dirty lenses. Wouter (talk) 19:31, 17 July 2016 (UTC)

Pages with 'File:' prefix in the main category

The problem has been found two months ago by OSeveno, discussed here (Commons:Help_desk/Archive/2016/05#Need help removing page from appearing inside category), reported to Phabricator as task T135577 which then got merged to task T135485. Finally aude closed T135485 on May 23, 2016 as 'Resolved'.

However, the 'File:' pages are still visible in the main space:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:AllPages?from=File&to=&namespace=0

Anybody cares to re-submit the issue to Phabricator...?

Pinging participants of the previous discussion: @Jmabel, Asclepias, Pokéfan95, Green Giant, and McZusatz:

--CiaPan (talk) 16:44, 16 July 2016 (UTC)

The ghost pages are still there, they still haunt the categories and they are still unaccessible and unmodifiable by ordinary users. I sort of expected that this problem, which is basically the creation of ghost duplicate pages in the wrong namespace, would not be addressed, after the Phabricator bug report about it (T135577) was said to be merged with another bug report about what looked like it may have been a different undeletion problem (T135485). As I suggested in the previous discussion here, the Phabricator people should be provided with the updated link to that discussion (Commons:Help_desk/Archive/2016/05#Need help removing page from appearing inside category), so they are at least made aware of what this problem is, and/or someone on Phabricator should explain to them what this problem is. This problem seems to be limited to a small number of pages and as such it may be less important than was the other one, which was apparently resolved, but still I think it should be investigated and diagnosed, if only to know how it happened and to make sure it doesn't risk happening again on a larger scale. The help desk may not be the best place to draw the necessary attention to this type of problem and maybe you can have better chances if you post on the administrators' noticeboard. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:37, 16 July 2016 (UTC)
FYI: See quarry:query/7089. --Achim (talk) 19:49, 16 July 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for this information Zhuyifei1999. If the causal problem was taken care of in T87645, then I think that answers satisfactorily what was the main concern here. If that was resolved and no new cases will be created, then the 50 or 60 ghost pages that already exist and remain on Commons may not be really a problem as such, if you know that they don't interfere with the good pages of identical names or with anything else. If the deletion of those pages involve a lot of work, I think you can leave them there. If you want, maybe you can delete the page ("File:Interieur, koor, gebrandschilderd glas, Karel V, detail - 's-Gravenhage - 20365072 - RCE.jpg") that was at the origin of the discussion and that is stuck in "Category:Grote of Sint-Jacobskerk (The Hague)", and maybe other pages that users may specifically notice in a similar situation? -- Asclepias (talk) 21:04, 16 July 2016 (UTC)

Good to hear they're working on it at Phabricator, since at the category Category:Grote of Sint-Jacobskerk (The Hague), there still is a blue pagelink for the for file File:Interieur, koor, gebrandschilderd glas, Karel V, detail - 's-Gravenhage - 20365072 - RCE.jpg. Even though the file itself clearly doesn't exist anymore. On this Helpdesk page though, the file link appears to me in red. PS: I clear my cache on a daily basis and usually more than once. Umm...How can I use the {{Move}} tag..?..? I'm not used to using Wikimedia commons... — Preceding unsigned comment added by AstrobluePeter (talk • contribs) 00:20, 19 July 2016 (UTC)

Actually I think, Jmabel mixed up something. {{Move}} is for changing categories, it seems. Open a file. On upper right there should be then an entry saying “More” in the language you’ve selected for reading Commons. Behind this entry, on clicking, should be another entry saying something similar like “Move file”. This will actually start a script, where you can select and fill out some fields (you should select in this case “on uploader’s request” as reason). A filemover will later execute the renaming for you. — Speravir_Talk – 21:58, 22 July 2016 (UTC)

Scan of full text with unspecified copyright status

I have an instruction sheet for the processing of film. It was provided with the film at point of sale and does not appear to claim any kind of copyright. Is this something that would be considered free to reproduce or would their be an implied copyright on the material even though it was not published in the USA and doesn't claim copyright? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bostwickenator (talk • contribs) 03:28, 17 July 2016 (UTC)

  • Under the Berne convention, almost all texts are copyrighted by default. The U.S. was late to sign the convention, which is why U.S. works published without copyright notice before 1978 are considered public domain, but there are very few countries in the world where a similar situation applied or applies, nor does a similar situation apply in the present-day U.S. So, no, from your description it is quite unlikely that the work in question is public domain. - Jmabel ! talk
  • Bostwickenator: We would not be able to host such a work on Commons; although some projects (though not all) allow fair-use material, so may be possible to contribute that way; Commons does not allow fair-use. Additionally, one might consider providing or uploading the material to en:Internet Archive... they've quite a collection of documentation, manuals and other such historical works. --dsprc (talk) 22:02, 17 July 2016 (UTC)
  • Thanks guys, I didn't know the US respected that convention. Bostwickenator (talk) 00:40, 19 July 2016 (UTC)

Hi! Adding Picture in a Wiki Page

Hi! I'm working on the Wiki Page of Riccardo Brugnara, a rugby player and a friend of mine. He already has a Wiki Page on the Italian Wiki and I wanted to translate and create another on the English one, since he plays for English teams. I wanted to add a picture of him but since I'm not sure how the Copyright works I wanted to ask you if I was able to upload a redimensioned picture taken by this site which seems to allow the use of all the pictures on the site (except for the Celebrities's children) online. Tell me please if I can upload the redimensioned photo on the Wiki Page of Riccardo Brugnara without problems, maybe by linking the site where I got the picture. Forgive me if I did any grammar errors, I'm still working on it. Best, Giovanni --GioviNicchia (talk) 18:27, 18 July 2016 (UTC)

Hi, The photo is not free [2]. It can't be uploaded to Wikimedia. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:28, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
Hi GioviNicchia, if he's a friend of yours, you might be able to take a picture of him yourself! That way, you own the copyright and can license the image any way you like. Be careful not to photograph him in front of a poster or other copyrighted material (see COM:DW). A lawn would work great. --rimshottalk 08:33, 19 July 2016 (UTC)

OTRS ticket: Will I be informed?

Hi colleagues, I've sent someone out there this OTRS form for the first in order let him allow me to upload pictures by him here at Commons under CC-BY-SA 4.0. In this form, he is being asked to send an email directly to wikimedia. My question: Will I be informed that he has sent the information? When exactly is the best time to upload the files? Who sets this OTRS infobox thingy? It would be very nice of you guys to quickly tell me how all this works. Thanks in advance, GeoTrinity (talk) 21:45, 18 July 2016 (UTC)

  • You can ask him to cc you, but otherwise you won't know.
  • If you know that this will move forward, and assuming it will be clear what are the files in question, you can upload them any time and tag them {{OTRS pending}}.
  • The OTRS team will ultimately tag them when there is a ticket number, assuming that there is enough clarity that they can identify the images; if you think there might not be, you might send them a separate email to help them by correlating your filenames to the email address from which they can expect to receive permission.
  • I hope that covers your questions. - Jmabel ! talk 02:23, 19 July 2016 (UTC)

Great answer! This helps a lot! I will mark it a little later as resolved. cheers, GeoTrinity (talk) 12:41, 19 July 2016 (UTC)

Roswell Daily Record 1947 newspaper is copyrighted

Hello, I have noticed that you have https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RoswellDailyRecordJuly8,1947.jpg listed as public domain. This image is in fact copyrighted by the Roswell Daily Record. How can I go about having this changed?

Thank you,

Toby Martinez Composing Manager/IT Roswell Daily Record

Toby Martinez, according to image file the original copyright was not renewed. Do you have a copy of the copyright renewal notice? MKFI (talk) 06:34, 16 July 2016 (UTC)

I can provide you with one. What would be the best method for getting that to you? Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 74.50.145.242 (talk) 04:49, 19 July 2016 (UTC)

Just an aside: if accurate, I believe this would be the first time we've seen such renewal documented for any non-NYC U.S. newspaper. - Jmabel ! talk 05:32, 19 July 2016 (UTC)
The OBP compilation lists all periodicals that renewed the copyright of at least one of their issues published between 1923 and 1950 [3]. Like you say, many of the newspapers that filed renewals for that time period were in New York, but there seems to be also some from other places. The Roswell Daily Record is not in the list. -- Asclepias (talk) 11:15, 21 July 2016 (UTC)
If you can provide it as a reference in Stanford's Copyright Renewal Database, that would be simplest. If not: in what form does the documentation exist (given which we can, I'm sure, work out how you can best pass it along)? - Jmabel ! talk 05:35, 19 July 2016 (UTC)
Isn't Stanford's database for books only? -- Asclepias (talk) 13:23, 19 July 2016 (UTC)
If the renewal is in the Catalog of copyright entries of the Copyright Office, you could cite the reference to the specific renewal entry, with the catalog's year, part, page, and entry title. If this catalog issue is online, anyone can look it up and you wouldn't need to send anything. For example, there is no renewal entry for the title "Roswell Daily Record" in the periodicals renewals in the 1975 catalog [4], but if the entry is somewhere else, please provide the reference. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:23, 19 July 2016 (UTC)

Thank you for all of your help. I have forwarded this information to our lawyer so he can provide the appropriate materials required. I will post once I hear back from him. Toby Martinez — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 74.50.145.242 (talk) 00:20, 21 July 2016 (UTC)

If you don't find the catalog entry, you could tell whatever useful information you do have in your documentation: date of the renewal notice, claimant's name, reference number. That may be enough to allow anyone to obtain a confirmation from the Copyright Office. It's public information, because its object is to allow members of the public to know if something is under copyright or not. The question above by Jmabel is also interesting: in what form is the documentation you have? Is it a copy of a form sent to the Copyright Office circa 1975 listing all or some of the 1947 issues of the newspaper? -- Asclepias (talk) 01:25, 21 July 2016 (UTC)

Duplicate uploads

Tonight I uploaded 12 photos, File:Raines-Carmichael House, Macon, GA, US.jpg through File:Raines-Carmichael House, Macon, GA, US (12).jpg, forgetting that I had already uploaded them with names such as File:House on College St., Macon Historic District, Macon, GA, US (13).jpg (not completely in succession). picture deleted (No OTRS permission for 30 days), but followed email template instructions from wikicommons?

Hello all, I have a question about pictures on wiki articles. I had uploaded a picture to the site of https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Paa

a ticket had been created and a few weeks later I was contacted about the permissions for the picture. I have followed the instructions on wikicommons (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:OTRS):

"I have received permission from the original author (not me) to upload the file to Commons."Please forward us a permission statement to the address listed above. We require that owners make a clear statement that they release the image under a free license. To help prevent confusion or misunderstandings we prefer one of the email templates be used. Permission grants must specifically contain a free license grant and may not merely give permissions for Commons or Wikipedia. If you have already uploaded the image to Commons, follow the instructions on Template:OTRS pending.

I have sent back the email from the owner of the picture with his statement, that he is allowing a free licence. I have used the email template from the wikicommons article. yet a few months later the picture was deleted with the reason: No OTRS permission for 30 days

Can anyone explain to me, what went wrong? I don't understand why the picture has been deleted?

Thank you in advance. Tydra — Preceding unsigned comment added by TydraLorx (talk • contribs) 18:57, 21 July 2016 (UTC)

  • I presume this is about File:Michael Paa 2016 v1.png. You marked this as OTRS pending on 7 March 2016. User:Jcb deleted it 2 July 2016 because after roughly 10 weeks that permission apparently still had not yet been received. Only a small number of people have access to OTRS emails, so probably Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard is the only place where anyone will be able to tell you anything more than that; I suggest you re-ask your question there. Please, when you post there indicate the filename so that no one needs to repeat the detective work I just did. - Jmabel ! talk 17:08, 22 July 2016 (UTC)

Probably because you uploaded a non-standard 1:13 scaled-down version (1600×1066 px) instead of the full resolution (5760×3840 px), as I mentioned. LX (talk, contribs) 21:52, 23 July 2016 (UTC)

Adding photo of my grand father's painting not working

Hi, I am trying to add a photo of my grandfather's painting (taken by my mom), but get this error: Cross-wiki upload filter.

What is wrong? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Joakimsd (talk • contribs) 23:51, 23 July 2016 (UTC)

Apparently this happens when a newly registered user tries to make a cross-wiki upload for a low-resolution image. It can probably be avoided by uploading directly at Commons (https://commons.wikimedia.org) and using the "Upload file" link at the left. When you are uploading somebody else's work, you should also get the copyright holder to give permission as described at OTRS, to avoid a risk of the photo getting deleted later. --ghouston (talk) 00:26, 24 July 2016 (UTC)
And of course the other way to avoid getting caught by the filter is to upload a full-resolution version instead of a tiny 198×245 pixel thumbnail. The reason for the filter is that low-resolution uploads from newly registered users using the cross-wiki upload forms overwhelmingly turn out to be copyright violations. And indeed, this file was incorrectly claimed to be the uploader's own work with the uploader being both author and copyright holder, so it looks like the filter worked as intended. Album/Single Covers

Hello, I received several notifications about copyright violations for files I've uploaded -

User talk:TheKaphox

I'm sorry that this is the case, as I've seen other people upload similar album/single covers onto Wikimedia under the same terms that I uploaded mine. However, literally every article for albums and singles I've seen has got artwork attached, so howcome the images that I've uploaded are different? I've tried checking the terms for other album covers, but I can't replicate that in how I upload mine. Any explanation would be appreciated. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheKaphox (talk • contribs) 14:07, 24 July 2016‎ (UTC)

It looks like you uploaded several album covers, claiming that the copyright holders of those album covers had published them under licenses allowing anyone to use, modify and redistribute the covers for any purpose, including commercial purposes. Those claims were of course completely made up, and you obviously can't do that. That's not only against the rules of this site, it's also illegal.
You haven't given any examples of these supposed "similar album/single covers ... under the same terms", but the music industry is generally not in the business of giving away their content for free, so you'll find very few commercial album covers published under free licenses.
You mention articles – presumably that's Wikipedia articles, presumably on English Wikipedia. English Wikipedia allows non-free content to be locally uploaded to that project for use in a fair use context. Commons, by contrast, is a general-purpose media repository, so fair use does not apply here. If you want to upload non-free content for use in articles on English Wikipedia, you need to go there. See en:Wikipedia:Non-free content for details. LX (talk, contribs) 20:50, 24 July 2016 (UTC)
Thank you, this was very helpful! TheKaphox

Can I upload images that came from Google Images? Because I know those images aren't copyrighted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MenkeeCow (talk • contribs) 03:29, 25 July 2016 (UTC)

By default, all images are copyrighted, including those found on Google Images. Is there a particular image you are thinking about? --rimshottalk 08:19, 25 July 2016 (UTC)
Images don't really "come from" Google Images. You should find the original sources of the images and link to the sources. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:18, 25 July 2016 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:MacIntyre.jpg

Hi - I am new to making edits to Wikipedia. I am trying to update a page with a new image. The image was found in a publicly published article. I'm not sure which copyright to put for that at there didn't seem to be one in the article. For reference the image is the main image of this article:

Thanks

I tagged it for deletion. Please don't upload non-free photos that you found on the Internet, and please read Commons:Project scope/Summary to understand what you can and cannot upload here. LX (talk, contribs) 19:41, 25 July 2016 (UTC)

Can we use Chinese language to discuss something at Wikimedia Commons?

I saw a comment from Eric850130 where he talked about me, and is uses Chinese to talk to Outlookxp.

As you can see at here, Eric850130's original words to say : "感覺這位使用者是懂中文的,卻持續使用英文溝通,讓我英文苦手實在很難完完全全解釋得很完整,開始覺得有點火大了。" It does look that he meant that "He is unfamiliar to English-speaking users, and other people should be using Chinese language to tell him. Otherwise, he will feel angry and helpless."

Faced with this situation, I don't know how to communicate with him about this clearly. Who can tell me how to do?--Liji (talk) 18:11, 25 July 2016 (UTC)

  • To answer the question in your title, yes, people may discuss in Chinese (or any other language). Beyond that, I'm not sure what you are asking. - Jmabel ! talk 19:28, 25 July 2016 (UTC)

Снимка за страницата на Никола Андонов!

Здравейте, внук съм на художника Никола Костов Андонов, опитвам се да кача негови снимки приживе, както и някои репродукции на негови картини, които са лична собственост! Как може да стане това!? Благодаря! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Viktor Kostov (talk • contribs) 10:07, 26 July 2016 (UTC)

  • (Google translate says this is Bulgarian & means, "Hello, I'm the grandson of the painter Nikola Kostov Andonov, trying to get pictures of him alive, and some reproductions of his paintings, which are private property! How can this happen!? thanks") - Jmabel ! talk 15:24, 26 July 2016 (UTC)
  • Assuming the part translated at "trying to get" means that this person wants to upload these to Commons, the question would be whether Viktor has inherited the copyrights. If so, something like {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}} would be in order. Otherwise, he will have to go through the COM:OTRS process with whomever owns the copyrights. There is no Bulgarian translation of COM:OTRS but I'm guessing he can read the Russian COM:OTRS/ru.
  • If someone can can translate the previous paragraph into Bulgarian, that would be very helpful. - Jmabel ! talk 15:30, 26 July 2016 (UTC)

Suggest adding a word

I am in The Uk and just publishing my first book. I am aiming to help lots of people around the globe recover from an addiction to artificial chemicals in food and drinks so people have a chance of a happier healthier lifestyle. I have invested a new word which I trade marked last year. I would like both words listed below to be included in your dictionary.

Chemicalism: The subject of artificial Chemically processed food and drink addictive dependence by Human beings and animals.

Chemaholic: A person or animal suffering from Chemicalism — Preceding unsigned comment added by Simon Kadwill-Kelly (talk • contribs) 11:55, 26 July 2016 (UTC)

This is not a dictionary and even if you were in the correct projekt (which is https://en.wiktionary.org) there would be no chance of adding a word you recently "invested". --Magnus (talk) 11:58, 26 July 2016 (UTC)

City Government Images

What permission would I add to an image created by a City government (only saw permission pertaining to Federal government)? Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tjterps (talk • contribs) 14:23, 26 July 2016‎ (UTC)

You left out the most relevant part – which city? For the vast majority of city governments around the world, their works are protected by copyright and will require explicit permission to publish under a free license. LX (talk, contribs) 14:28, 26 July 2016 (UTC)

Uploading to Wikimedia

Hello!

I am interning for a Chicago record label this summer. As part of my work, I am creating a Wikipedia page for one of their artists. I want to add a picture to the infobox but I am not sure how to get a picture that is free use. I searched google with the restriction free to use but there are not currently any such photos. How does one go about releasing the rights to a photo? I can have them do so once I know how.

Thank you, Ian — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ailunn (talk • contribs) 18:36, 27 July 2016 (UTC)

See Commons:OTRS for instructions. You may also wish to read Commons:Guidance for paid editors. LX (talk, contribs) 18:58, 27 July 2016 (UTC)
If the record label want images released under a free license, they are probably in a position to make it happen. First, you need to work out whether the copyrights still belong to the photographer or have been transferred to the record label. If the former, you will have to work with the photographer to get such a release of rights to happen. If the latter, then it should be really simple: someone at the label will just have to email a release (as explained in COM:OTRS) to provide a specific license. - Jmabel ! talk 22:10, 27 July 2016 (UTC)
Just to prevent misunderstandings: Not anyone at the label. Someone who has the right to manage the intellectual properties of the label. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:41, 27 July 2016 (UTC)

Meta Tags

How do I get meta data removed from picture uploads and stop it from importing them all. Perhaps this should be clearer in the upload wizard and is there anyway to get it surpressed on files already uploaded. Yachty4000 00:14, 29 July 2016 (UTC)

I suspect you're referring to Exif data. See Commons:Exif for information on that. Exif data can be stripped prior to uploading via methods mentioned on that page. I don't know if it can be removed after uploading, though. clpo13(talk) 23:28, 28 July 2016 (UTC)
Can't really be stripped after uploading: once a file is uploaded here, the only way you change it is to upload over it. Even apparent exceptions to that like cropping with the crop tool are handled as additional uploads. If you have uploaded an image that has EXIF data you don't want shown, feel free to upload a version without that EXIF data, then ask for deletions of the earlier, problematic versions (which will be simplest if you list the files in question in one place; unless someone knows otherwise, probably best asked at COM:AN, because it will require an administrator to do the deletions.). - Jmabel ! talk 03:29, 29 July 2016 (UTC)

Something broke a template

Several of my uploads have recently been bot-tagged for lack of permission (example); all of them were using {{PD-signature|United States}}, which until recently caused the template to display properly, but now it's giving an error message, Lua error in Module:Fallback at line 73: attempt to index a nil value. The problem's easily fixed, but my question is about the template. How, when, and by whom was an edit made that caused this template to break? Special:Recentchangeslinked didn't show anything relevant, and while the error message provided a link to Module:Fallback, that page hasn't been edited in over a year! And it's not some weirdness on my part; Category:Media without a license: needs history check currently has more than 1,100 files (it appears as a backlog if there are just 50 files in it), and virtually all of them are signatures. Nyttend (talk) 13:41, 31 July 2016 (UTC)

On a possibly related matter, see File:Robert M. Ball signature.jpg, another of the affected images. It's included in Category:Pages where expansion depth is exceeded, even though I'm not directly calling any templates except {{Information}}, {{W}}, and {{PD-signature}}; pages on which I use Information and W in a similar manner don't display the message, and PD-signature didn't previously have this error, so I expect that it's related to the edit(s) that broke the functionality of filling the country parameter with "United States". Nyttend (talk) 13:47, 31 July 2016 (UTC)

The use of "United States" has been always incorrect as {{Country}} shows. However its fallback template {{City}} was recently editted, though I do not know if this edit is relevant. Ruslik (talk) 20:39, 31 July 2016 (UTC)
Looking at the source, {{PD-signature}} only uses {{Country}} indirectly via {{CountryName}}, but both those templates take the ISO code, so it looks like the documentation for {{PD-signature}} is wrong. LX (talk, contribs) 21:50, 31 July 2016 (UTC)
