Copyvio for File:Dfh-logo.png?

Isn't File:Dfh-logo.png bordering on copyvio? To me it seems that there is sufficient originality to gain copyright. "Kasparroelle" claims "own work" which I doubt. — Fnielsen (talk) 09:23, 2 May 2015 (UTC)

I'm trying to upload a large (47 meg) PDF -- a city directory of Racine, Wisconsin from 1876. The upload appears to work, and then I fill out the source and the description, and then I get this error:

I've tried with Firefox and Chrome.

Hallo, Ich habe vor 2 Jahren, nach dem Tode meiner Mutter 12 Radierungen im Keller gefunden. Diese gehoeren jetzt mir. Alle Radierungen sind von A.E. Euchler und sind alles Orginale, 3 davon meiner Mutter gewidmet die 1946-1947 mit ihm gearbeitet hat. Ich nehme an dass ich die Lizenz/das Recht habe diese jetzt zu veroeffentlichen?

Should this picture be cropped?

Self-made gin and tonic.

I just uploaded this picture of a glass of self-made gin and tonic after having discussed the idea on Wikipedia for about a week. The picture is otherwise fine, but it looks like about two thirds of the image goes to waste, as it is horizontal, and the actual drink is in a vertical glass. Should the image be cropped to better illustrate the drink? Anyway, if it looks like it should be cropped, I'd rather upload the cropped version as a separate picture rather than a new version of this picture. JIP (talk) 18:40, 3 May 2015 (UTC)

    • The reason I asked is to find out whether the image as it is, as shown on the right, looks like it has too much background on the edges, distracting the viewer from the actual subject. JIP (talk) 05:23, 4 May 2015 (UTC)
That’s a pretty subjective call; we might as well have both versions. AFAIC the more choice the better: someone might want a ‘portrait’ format image anyway, to fit a layout; someone else might like the tabletop.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 05:35, 4 May 2015 (UTC)

Combining 2 Public Domain Files

When combining 2 public domain image files from WikiMedia to create 1 new image file which image creator should receive credit when citing the sources of the new image?

Also, is there a stoppage in the wizard upload process because of the above?

Deleted Images

This is outrageous. Images we uploaded have been deleted because of lack of license. This is simply not true. All the images we uploaded to https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liz_Solari are under the required Creative Commons license as you can see here: http://lizsolari.com/web/imageneswiki/ I really do not understand why the images have been deleted and would like to know how to solve it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adyouteam (talk • contribs) 21:34, 4 May 2015‎ (UTC)

Have you asked Jianhui67, who apparently performed the deletions in question, for a more detailed explanation than is practical in the logs? Sometimes there’s just something missing from the licence template, or a technical error with the format. (Not being an administrator, I can’t see what the file pages showed for permissions.) To request a public review of the issue, please see COM:UNDEL.
As for the second link you cite above, all I see by way of permission is the intermittently shown message “Firma y ayudemos por favor! Pasala a todos los que puedas.” Unless there‘s a clearer licence somewhere on the site, that’s insufficient for Commons: we require not only free sharing, but also explicit permission for derivative or commercial reuse. It may be necessary (and would probably be best anyway) for the owner(s) of the copyrights—be they the photographer(s) or the subject—to send a formal letter of consent identifying your account as authorized to upload on their behalf. See COM:OTRS for instructions and a sample consent letter.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:02, 5 May 2015 (UTC)
  • Just to add to Odysseus1479's comment. I am assuming that Liz Solari is the subject of those photos. If this is correct you need the copyright holder (which may or may not be the subject) to release the photos. Some of those photos look like modelling shoots, while others seem to be event or promotional photos; has Liz Solari (or representatives) had the copyright transferred from the photographer to her, or have the photographers themselves released the images under a free licence? No, and no. First, we only host content for which commercial use (among others) is allowed. Second, even if a search-engine thinks an image is totally free, we can’t take a third party’s word for it; there must be either a clear statement from the rights-holders themselves, at the source, or good evidence that the rights have lapsed in all relevant jurisdictions. Hello! When filling images of stamps on the Commons there is a need for a set of cross references. Perhaps, they can be divided into 3 groups: 1) galleries of versions; 2) templates of series; 3) archives and miniatures. It is purely mechanical work. Sorry, but that wouldn't help. IMDB is not the copyright-holder. That's a movie poster created by the movie company or their marketing agency. Clearly unfree. You might try to obtain a permission, but not from IMDB. --Túrelio (talk) 09:54, 6 May 2015 (UTC)

uploading image of a person from google search

Hi

I had checked earlier with wiki help about uploading image of a person on commons. I was asked to get the photographers name, which I don't have.

As I understand, on Commons photos / pictures which are freely licensed can be uploaded without issues. The photo I want to upload is available on google images via simple search. Does this not count as freely licensed? Can I upload this photo? Kindly help.

Request to remove file

Uploading a photo taken by someone else

Hi All-

I am trying to upload a headshot of someone to their wikipedia page. The photo was taken by a photographer who has given the subject his verbal agreement to use the photo as he pleases.

challenged by photo licensing-thanks in advance for helping

i used a flickr attribution for a photo--that photo was deleted. i now have a formal approval from the photo creator for use on the commons. but I can't post my photo because it was previously deleted. how do i post my previously deleted photo and how do i ensure I am doing it properly? 6x6 slides

I have scanned four slides that were 6x6 and uploaded them to Category:Houses in Hunters Hill, New South Wales. I find that when I click on the image of each, instead of getting the large image, I get a blank screen. Is there some technical problem? I don't get this problem with 35mm slides I have scanned. Have had some trouble with 6x6 scans before, eg they don't work in Picasa.

Credit where credit's due

I often ask a particular contributor to Flickr if he will change the licence on a particular image or images so it can be uploaded to Wikimedia. He is very generous, though once in a while he wants to keep the licence A R R. He has recently allowed me to upload an image of a very interesting subject but it seems to have been taken indoors without a flash (yet a flash has been used and reflected badly) and it is very hard to make out the subject! I used PSE to lighten it, uploaded it separately, (but not displayed it in an article) then wrote and told him about it and he is unhappy. He wants me to make it very clear to everybody when I amend any of his photos other than just cropping them and fair enough!

Please what is the conventional way to show I (or an editor) have played with an image and it is not as the maker intended and make that very clear to a reader. As I say this donor is very generous and I want to more than just please him, if I can. Thanks, Eddaido (talk) 13:21, 8 May 2015 (UTC)

You can use the template Retouched picture and specify the changes in the parameter. The template is practical but optional. Alternatively, you can specify the changes in the description without the template. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:43, 8 May 2015 (UTC)

If you did not handover your copyright and retain rights yourself, then the answer is yes. There will be a copyright notice on the open access journal. Hopefully it is CC-BY-SA of some version, and then also the answer is yes. And for the latter we can use it on Wikipedia, and for the former, you can release the figure under a suitable license.   5. In diese Zeile den Dateinamen deines Bildes einfügen, optional gefolgt von einem "|" und einer kurzen Beschreibung.

Hi PieroProStaff! I'm sorry for responding in English, but it doesn't look like anyone who speaks Italian is going to answer. You might have more luck at Commons:Bar italiano. The Upload Wizard (the default interface for uploading files to Commons) is pretty much in a perpetual state of brokenness. It isn't broken for everyone all the time, but I don't recall a time since it was introduced that we went more than a few days without people reporting enigmatic problems with indefinitely spinning wheels, unhelpful error messages, or simply no way to move forward. Have you tried Commons:Upload? It tends to be much more reliable. Additionally, you may wish to read Commons:Guidance for paid editors, which includes information on the topic of uploading company logos. —LX (talk, contribs) 22:47, 15 May 2015 (UTC)

Boris Yelensky photograph

Hello there! I've never uploaded an image before, and now that circumstances point me towards that option, I'm needing some assistance. I'm drafting an article on Boris Yelensky. He died 41 years ago, and there are a few 100 year-old photos of him as a young man I'd be interested in placing in his new infobox and article (i.e. this one and this one). Is there any way of uploading these without proof of ownership? I doubt contacting the original photographer would be possible, given he must've died decades ago, and their origins are very obscure at best. What could I do? Thanks so much! Source about an OSM file

Hi, in february I uploaded this OSM file and I found it tagged as "unsourced" today. I've not really understood because, seeing the OSM maps uploaded here, I noticed that the template {{OpenStreetMap}} showed by itself the source. Uhm, I've now understood, partly. That parameter ("name") links not to the map of the uploaded are, but to a wiki page of OSM. And, if the wiki page doesn't exist, is it another way to link the source in the template? Just for example, I've now noticed that the same template, in the example, has a link to the OSM wiki page for Bhopal, but the page doesn't exist. Is it another parameter to use in this cases? Increasing dpi for a 180 dpi Commons public domain photo

I need a higher dpi for a photo on Commons than is offered. The photographer, Maurice Marcellin, has gone AWOL, so I cannot ask him for a 300+ dpi version of the photo. Is it possible to print the photo with the most pixels and then scan it at 600 dpi for a print-quality image?

  • You don't say what photo you are talking about, but there is no way to increase the amount of information in a graphics file. You can interpolate, of course, but at best you retain information, not increase it. Similarly, printing and then scanning can only reduce quality, not increase it. - Jmabel ! talk 01:11, 13 May 2015 (UTC)
    Also, the DPI (dots per inch) for a digital image with a given number of pixels depends entirely on the physical size at which you print it. Agreeing with all of the above, I might add that while 300 ppi is the nominal standard for printing, it‘s higher than is often needed in practice. For commercial offset or digital printing, and on typical inkjet printers, a 180-ppi image that hasn’t been too aggressively compressed will be visually very hard to distinguish from a higher-resolution version. Where the original is ‘soft’ or lacking fine detail, one can get away with even less; aliasing or pixellation only becomes apparent below 100 ppi or so, depending on the printer. If you really must up-sample an image, use an appropriate software tool rather than printing and rescanning. Adobe Photoshop, for example, has a “Bicubic Smoother“ option for the purpose. Photographic images rarely benefit from resolutions higher than 300 ppi in print; even “art book‘ lithography with 200-lpi halftoning. Linework and type (black-and-white images with no tone, only one bit deep in digital form), however, are best at very high resolutions, typically 600–1800 ppi, again depending on the printing method.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 20:10, 18 May 2015 (UTC)
  • You can use this free online tool to change the DPI of a JPG or PNG file. As mentioned above, the quality of the photo will not increase but it will allow the image to pass the requirements of some printers / printing organisations.

  • Not sure what you mean by an "outright" owner. Ownership of a physical work of art and the intellectual property rights to that work are completely separate. So if by "outright" owner you mean that you are the artist's heir, then you almost certainly can upload images, but if you simply mean that you own the painting itself, then it matters what country the work is from (which you haven't mentioned), because terms of protection after the artist's death vary from country to country. - Jmabel ! talk 15:34, 16 May 2015 (UTC)

I was in Ayr yesterday taking some snaps with my friend Rick Dunlop, when this old gentleman approached us and asked if we would like to take his photograph, we asked why and he said what team do you support, we replied we don't follow football, He then went on to tell us about his career in football with Glasgow rangers and his MBE and about coming from south Africa for a 3 month trial and how he stayed. He was of course Johnny Hubbard MBE.

Hi Fdimello! I'm sorry for responding in English, but questions in Portuguese seem to rarely get any answer in Portuguese here. You might have more luck at Commons:Esplanada. If I understand correctly, you are having some kind of problem with geographical coordinates, and you are getting some kind of error message (which you unfortunately seem to have forgotten to quote). Geographical coordinates is not required information for uploading, but if you do want to provide it, it's appreciated. If the problem is that you don't know the geographical coordinates for a particular place, that information is often found in the Wikipedia articles about the place. If it's missing in one language, check another. You can also find more detailed coordinates, for example by right-clicking on a point in Google Maps and selecting "What's here?" If the problem is that you don't know which format to use, the Upload Wizard requires decimal coordinates (for example -23.55,-46.63 for São Paulo). xcf files

I have been uploading some images from out of print books, mostly PDF files from Internet Archive. I have an Ubuntu OS, and am using GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) to convert from PDF. When I import the images GIMP converts them to xcf files. I understand that Commons allows uploading xcf files, but I am unsure if anyone not using a Linux OS will be able to use them, so I have converted everything to jpeg. Is that just wasting time? GIMP on any platform can read them. It seems unreasonable to choose a single-program format instead of a standard format unless you're actually using layers or something else fancier then JPEG or PNG can easily support.--Prosfilaes (talk) 13:35, 18 May 2015 (UTC)

If the images are of pages printed in one colour, and especially if there‘s no shading (just solid text and linework), PNG is likely a better format than JPEG: it does not degrade the image during compression, and moreover the files are often smaller—especially where a colour depth of 8 bits or fewer is sufficient to represent it. Ideally, however, images should be extracted from PDFs in their original format as embedded (often JPEG, unfortunately), only converting when necessary; re-rendering should be a last resort.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 18:04, 18 May 2015 (UTC)

Because going to export instead of a save is an extra step. Yes, if you can read a file on Linŭ, you can install an x86 emulator and run Linŭ on Windows or Mac and read it on Linŭ on Windows or Mac.
As Odysseus1479 points out, instead of converting the files, they should be extracted where possible; pdfimages in the poppler-utils package will extract the jpeg files as they are stored in the PDF, without the degradation that reconverting them to JPEG will do.--Prosfilaes (talk) 00:27, 19 May 2015 (UTC)

Prosfilaes, you are assuming that I understand computers, which is far from being a correct asumption. Poppler-utils package is a command line utility, and my attempting to use it would be an express route to trouble. What I am doing now is extracting the images as PDFs, using Linux software called PDF-Shuffler, and then converting the files in Gimp. Drawing with signature, 1943

The following permission is in use here on Commons:

"This image (or other media file) is in the public domain because its copyright has expired and its author is anonymous.

This applies to the European Union and those countries with a copyright term of 70 years after the work was made available to the public and the author never disclosed their identity."

Now there is a small drawing, printed in a 1943 newspaper, that has a small signature ("Zoli") at the top left. This is the only indication of the artitst, there is no name given inside a caption or elsewhere. Does this count as a disclosure of identity? If "Zoli" is the real name of the author, then the author isn't anonymous. If it is a pseudonym, then it depends on whether the identity of the person has been disclosed somewhere else.
Also pay attention to Article 10 (1) of the w:Copyright Duration Directive, which says that the new EU copyright rules didn't have the effect that any copyright terms were shortened. In Germany, this means that the copyright term for anonymous artworks runs for 70 years from the death of the anonymous author if this means a longer term than the term given in the {{Anonymous-EU}} template (see de:Anonymes Werk (Urheberrecht)#Frühere Rechtslage in Deutschland / Übergangsrecht). I've seen another strip of "Zoli" inside the paper, this time with "Zoli" inside the caption, so this seems indeed to be a pseudonym. I was unable to find the person behind this pseudonym, though. User Preference to set image search results to 500??

Hi! I used to be able to set the number of search results in a wiki commons image search to 500. In fact that was the main reason I signed up for an account -- so that setting would "stick". A year or so ago it went away.

I use wiki commons to construct complicated art using public domain images. It's a great resource! I do find that it's really annoying, every time I change the search, looking for that perfect image, to reset the "show 500" option.

Even if the "View (previous 20 | next 20) (20 | 50 | 100 | 250 | 500)" was at the TOP, rather than to bottom of the page, it would have a significant impact on my productivity. I know wiki's an unpaid resource (I'm a donor, though poor!:-), but this would really be helpful if someone could show me how to do this again.

Video showing as red link on Wikipedia

After recently having some trouble uploading File:Black slug at Medieval graveyard near Lewino Poland 17 May 2015.ogv to Commons using the Upload Wizard. I got it to work using the regular uploader. Category redirects

I've discovered a large number of categories with absurdly long names, e.g. Category:Main Street Bridge, Spanning Fox River at State Route 72, West Dundee, Kane County, IL HAER, which should be something like Category:Main Street Bridge (West Dundee, Illinois). I'd like to move these categories. If I move a category at en:wp, the old name is tagged with en:Template:Category redirect, and a bot will move the contents from the old name to the new. However, when I move a category here, the result is an ordinary redirect. Is there any bot that monitors redirects for contents and moves pages to the new titles? I've discovered dozens of these super-long names and expect to discover many times more; I don't want to have to edit hundreds or thousands of photos just to give a new category name if a bot will. Apparently not. A bot will put {{Category redirect}} into a moved category. It will then turn up in Category:Non-empty category redirects. However the message in that category says files won't be moved for newly moved categories. For public-domain images there’s no requirement for attribution—it may be done as a courtesy or, as in this case, to provide an academic reference. Recommended credits can be obtained in two ways of which I am aware: in the download pop-up in the Media Viewer there’s an attribution area from which you can copy a text or HTML string, and for registered users there’s the StockPhoto gadget that presents the info in various formats. For the above image the former gives:

I am trying so hard to understand how to establish my beautiful career without advertising or abusing copyright which I feel I am not guilty of. It is so important to me. I do not understand what I am doing wrong. I am disabled in the neck so typing is difficult for me.   • You are asking on Wikimedia Commons, but your question is about Wikipedia. Normally I would say "ask there" but the answer is pretty simple: Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. Unless you have done things notable enough to merit an article in an encyclopedia, an article about you doesn't belong there. No, issuing a CC-by-sa license does not limit what you can do with your own work in other contexts in any way. The only thing you can't do is revoke the license. Username renaming problems

Renaming my WC username from Odysses to Odysses~commonswiki caused many problems. I also have same username User:Odysses in WP. Strangely, although all of my contributions and uploads moved to the new username Odysses~commonswiki, I still have access to the old Odysses. To solve this problem I guess an administrator should:

There's not much an admin can do. User:Odysses is one unified account across Wikimedia, and Odysses~commonswiki is a separate one. If you have control of Wikipedia User:Odysses, you have control of the same account on all Wikimedia projects. Registration problem

Hello, Day before yesterday (25 May 2015) I uploaded a picture as part of the current "Wiki Loves Earth" photo contest on Wikimedia CH. In order to participate I was requested to create an account and to register as a Wikimedia Commons user. I created a username "pvzahn" and provided a password. I have subsequently received an email with the Subject line "Wikimedia Commons email address confirmation", pointing me to the following link, in order to confirm my email address and complete the registration. However, following the email link leads to an "Error 404" page. I am therefore unable to compete my registration, which means I cannot log in to the system. Can someone kindly assist me in resolving this issue? Hi Peter! You do not need to provide an e-mail address to register an account. Registration of your account is already complete, as evidenced by the fact that you have been able to upload a file. (Only registered users can do that.) Providing an e-mail address is only needed if you want to be able to reset your password in case you forget it, to allow others to send you e-mails via the site, and to enable e-mail notifications. If you provide an address, a confirmation link is sent out to make sure the person who gets those e-mails actually asked for them. Your e-mail address is already confirmed. (I can tell, because as a logged-in user with a confirmed e-mail address of my own, I'm able to load Special:EmailUser/Pvzahn. I wouldn't be able to do that if your address hadn't been confirmed.)

  1. Assuming the logotype is original enough to merit copyright protection, you need to get the club to agree to publish the logotype under a free license. This means that they will no longer be able to stop others from using logotype for commercial purposes on copyright grounds, but restrictions on use imposed by trademark rights still apply. Many companies will not agree to this.
  2. Follow this procedure to obtain and send in a formal permission statement.
  3. Upload the logo, providing correct source, authorship and information on what license the club agreed to. Add {{subst:OP}} to the file description page.
If you can't get the club to agree to publish the logotype under a free license and your intention is to upload the logotype for use on English Wikipedia, see en:Wikipedia:Non-free content.

That paper has the notice “© 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.“ I don’t see anything to indicate the illustrations are an exception. We will require the publisher to release the rights under a free licence for those images or derivative works to be hosted here. Making your own plots from numerical data in the article would probably be OK, though.

Are photographs of Transformers toys allowed?

Is it allowed to upload photographs of Transformers toys? I have taken the photographs myself in my own apartment and own the specific instances of the toys. Nevertheless, I don't own the copyright to the design of the toys. I know uploading photographs of copyrighted 2D illustrations is generally not allowed, but these are 3D objects. Does this make any difference? These are photographs of the actual toys, not of the accompanying 2D illustrations, which I know I'm not allowed to upload. JIP (talk) 18:36, 28 May 2015 (UTC)

Is Wikimedia a commercial site?

I was hoping to upload several images from the Alexander Turnbull Library online collection. Many of them are not old enough to be classed public domain under New Zealand law but the site states images may be used on other websites but cannot be used commercially. Is Wikimedia/Wikipedia classed as a commercial website? An example of their files and re-usage criteria can be seen here. All material in the Wikimedia Commons has to be licensed for modification as well as commercial use, so if what you wish to upload has a "non-commercial use only" restriction it can't be uploaded here. You may be able to upload selected works to the English Wikipedia for use under a non-free use rationale. — SMUconlaw (talk) 12:06, 29 May 2015 (UTC)
In other words:
  1. Neither Wikipedia nor Wikimedia Commons (this project) nor any other Wikimedia project (Wikinews, Wikivoyage, etc.) are commercial sites. So from the point of view of the Alexander Turnbull Library online collection, uploading their files here would probably be OK.
  2. But we only accept material that can be used commercially (by anyone, for any purpose). That's because we want people to - for example - be able to print a book made of Wikipedia articles, or use pictures from Wikimedia Commons in their own publications. Hence, we don't allow such material to be uploaded here, even if the copyright holder would be OK with it.
  3. Some of the different language versions of Wikipedia make exceptions to that under certain conditions. You would have to upload files like that to that language version of Wikipedia locally (see the link in above answer for instructions for the English language Wikipedia).
In any case: please do not upload those files here, at Wikimedia Commons. Hope that helps at least a bit, --El Grafo (talk) 13:32, 29 May 2015 (UTC)

Hello, I'd like to know how to accomplish the following:

  1. Search for files by name and avoid file redirects in the search results.
  2. Search for files by name which are not in a particular category or its subcategories.
  3. Search for files which are not being used anywhere.
  4. Search for files which are exact duplicates.
  5. Merge duplicates.

Ethics on wikipedia articles

Hi,

Is it ethical to edit Wikipedia pages to use my own uploaded photos? I couldn't find answer to this question anywhere.

Commons tries not to make such decisions for other wikis. However, unless you are editing an article about you, your family, your friends, your workplace, etc there is no problem using photos that you uploaded. Obviously you have to make sure that the photos are either licensed or in the public domain. Also please remember to sign your comments with a ~~~~ at the end. If your photos are the best or only ones available on Commons to illustrate the subject, then they can certainly be used within reason. However, if you were to (hypothetically) add your photos of pigeons at the park to Rock dove, you may get some flack. what happens to an infographic that is found to have inaccurate information

What happens when it's determined an infographic on Commons is inaccurate? What if it's just obsolete due to someone uploading more recent data? Obviously in at least the latter case there would be no cause for deletion, but do we add some disclaimer to the page? --— Rhododendrites talk |  03:08, 30 May 2015 (UTC)

Short answer: either overwrite it or upload a new file. If the information is obsolete, and not historically significant, a new version can be overwritten with correct data (and ideally with updated description/source to facilitate future revisions), thus the image is instantly updated wherever it is used, and the obsolete/incorrect versions are still visible for reference. This also keeps categories from becoming cluttered with dozens/hundreds of variants. See for instance the file history at File:Syria and Iraq 2014-onward War map.png. If there is compelling reason to keep the inaccurate file in an unmodified state, the inaccuracies could be clarified with explanatory text, {{Inaccurate description}} or {{Inaccurate-map-disputed}} templates, and/or possibly the {{Superseded}} pointing users towards the more accurate version. But note that some historical inaccuracies are worth keeping (see Dewey Defeats Truman!). If overwriting an existing image with a new version might be controversial, you should probably initiate discussion on the file's Discussion page first (ideally pinging relevant contributors, as Commons files are probably less likely to be watched than Wikipedia articles). Lua error

Does anyone know how to fix (or if to fix) the Lua error at Category:Modern movement architecture by country? Someone commented out the {{Countrymap}} because it previously was producing the following error:

There can not be two or more {{Countrymap}} templates on the same page (too many expensive function calls). I suggest manually specifying category names that do not match the pattern. Ruslik (talk) 18:02, 30 May 2015 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Earth photography competition in Pakistan

I have uploaded 37 pictures on the Wikimedia page for the 'Wiki Loves Earth photography competition in Pakistan' contest. I have gone through the following steps; Learn, Upload, Release rights, Describe except the last stage of 'use'. 36 of my pictures have been 'published' except one where it says 'This file might be corrupt, or have the wrong extension.' I uploaded that corrupt picture separately on a new tab and that one has gone till the last step of use and the process has been complete, but these 36 pictures are stuck on the 'describe' stage due to that one corrupt picture. There's no option of removing it or making any changes. I can't go back and re-upload all of these since describing each picture thoroughly has consumed a lot of my time already, I can't go through all of that hassle again. Since the 36 pictures have a green check mark next to them and have been published, I thought the last step of 'use' didn't matter, but when I tried closing the tab it says 'you have not finished uploading and publishing these files yet'. I don't know what to do. Should I wait further for an option to show up, have those 36 pictures been added to the Wikimedia page or do I need to re-upload all of these again?

P.S. I uploaded 47 pictures yesterday with success, but these 36 are giving me a tough time, though the quality of pictures are the same as the ones I uploaded yesterday. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ‎Sanam.mg (talk • contribs)

  • Yes, sometimes the upload wizard can be a little odd and crash or hang. You have uploaded 37 (at my count) images today, they (and all your uploads) can be viewed here. It may be best to see which have failed (the ones missing from the list), and try them again. Sorry about the troubles, and I hope I've helped answer your problem. Photos belonging to me were deleted

I have uploaded several images created by me, and they are from my own website: www.davidsmithart.com I added these images to several relevant Wikipedia articles, including one in which my name appears, and three of the images were deleted due to "possible copyright violations." Hi Smithvane. The problem is that currently we have no way of telling whether you (the person behind the account Smithvane) are the person who owns www.davidsmithart.com or just someone who stole some images from that website and uploaded them here. Unfortunately, the upload process doesn't really offer clear instructions on what to do when pictures were previously published elsewhere. That's a bad thing, but we, the volunteer community of Commons, don't have much control over that part of the software, so we can't really do much to change that. However, please follow the instructions at COM:OTRS so your files can be restored (might take a while, depending on how long the OTRS backlog currently is). I had obtained it directly from the photographer, who gave me his personal permission to use it in this way, and then registered it, as you see from the url or whatever it is, which I could not have obtained if I had not . I then placed it on the wikipedia page about myself (Peter Hitchens) in the proper way, a process which I found rather difficult as I have limited computer skills.

Nobody contacted me. Without any explanation or any attempt to contact me, it was deleted. I have no idea why, or what purpose this served . At best it's bureaucratic. At worst it is plain wrong, and veryt frustrating after so much careful and (for me ) rather difficult work. A previous picture on the same site , which was posted without permission of the copyright holder, was displayed there for many years undisturbed. Can someone help me put

It seems you didn't add a license, that's why the file was deleted. Also, as it is not your work, you need to send a copy of the permission to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, then the file can be restored. Please see COM:OTRS for the details of the procedure.
