Is there a special way to show an image is annotated?

Hi,

I found an annotated image File:Albanian Alps from Air.jpg that cleared up questions I was having about the geography of Albania. Is there any special category that such images go into? I found it by luck. Thanks, EChastain (talk) 17:44, 24 February 2015 (UTC)

Yes, although it would be good if there was a way of doing it so that anyone categorising pages involving the mountains, valleys, passes etc. of Albania would know about it. Is there a way of doing that? Thanks, EChastain (talk) 18:18, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
 • Sorry about the delay. I guess you could create a category along the lines of Category:Geography of Albania with annotations, but it might be a bit bare (and possibly of dubious benefit with so few file). You could also add the image(s) to the gallery page Albania with a caption saying how the image(s) are annotated (this is probably a better idea).
You should be able to use catscan to find images with annotations. Instructions can be found here and here. But this should work:
 • Set the "language" to commons;
 • set the "project" to wikimedia;
 • set the "depth" to how many categories deep into the tree you wish to search;
 • place the categories into the "categories" field; select "file" in "namespaces";
 • place ImageNote in the box "Has all of these templates:" (this is the template for annotations);
 • now hit "do it!" and wait for the results to show up
Sometimes this can take a while or crash the browser, especially if you're doing a deep search. I hope this helps, if you need more help don't hesitate to ask here or on my talk page. ColonialGrid (talk) 09:45, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

Adding Images Taken On Camera & Scanned Images

Hello, I'm planning to upload images containing awards/certificates and Scanned Newspaper Articles; will I need special licenses for these? Can't I use cc-by-sa-4.0 since they are my own work? Aren't Newspaper articles Public domain so can I use the PD or PD Scan tag? Thank you, Krystel Espiritu (talk)

 • Newspapers may be PD, but only if certain conditions are met, the same as all media. Could you please give some more information such as the country are the newspaper(s) are from, and what years are they were printed in? The same goes for the awards and certificates, which organisations issued them, and in which years? ColonialGrid (talk) 09:11, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
@ColonialGrid: the newspaper articles are from Kuwait and most of them are fairly recent only 2 - 10 years old same goes with the awards. These are awards/Certificates a couple of them are from the government/ ministry and rest from international companies like Starkey, Ray-band etc. Krystel Espiritu (talk)
 • Commons:Copyright rules by territory#Kuwait states copyright lasts 50 years after creation for images, while Template:PD-Kuwait states 25 years after broadcast for "a broadcast program"; 50 years after creation for "photographic work, cinematographic work, performance, or software"; and 50 years after death for "another type of work". Based on this I don't see how awards, certificates, or newspapers that are only a two to ten years old could be in the public domain. If there is a government restriction on copyright, or the Kuwaiti government uses some form of open government licence, then government work may be possible but you'd have to look into that. As it stands I don't think any of the media you have mentioned would be appropriately licenced for upload to Commons. ColonialGrid (talk) 09:54, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
@ColonialGrid: So if I took a picture of a trophy I can't publish it either and pass it off as my own work? Krystel Espiritu (talk)
 • Possibly, it depends on the complexity and originality of the the trophy's design. Please see derivative works and threshold of originality. As always, answers can only be as specific as the question, if you link to an image of the trophy we may be able to give a more concrete answer. You can also ask questions regarding licencing at Commons:Village pump/Copyright, and will get answers from people with a more specialised than generalised knowledge on copyright (that doesn't mean you can't post these questions here, but that there are options on where to ask copyright questions). Verification of use of materials...

Hello,

I am Dr. Mark and I need verification of my interpretation to use materials found in Wikipedia in (that I imbed) in my powerpoint presentation to my classes / students. Because it is extremely difficult to interpret and follow copyright laws I want to make sure I do not violate copyrights…

I want to imbed desired graphics and pictures found in Wikimedia Commons into my powerpoint presentations to discuss my subject; Reframing Our Sense of Humor. These would only be used in my classes, for no commercial purposes and will not be altered.

I am searching for my material by entering Wikimedia Commons Public Domain (topic - i.e. humor) to try to be sure I can use these without copyright infringement. I also, do attribute Wikimedia or the source on the image on the powerpoint slide.

1) Am I correct to believe that these images, pictures, etc…I search are in the public domain or can be used by me without copyright infringement?

2) If any are Creative Commons 1.1 public domain or CC can and use them and how do I know how to attribute them given my purpose and method of use AND because I do not intend to upload and share my class curriculum - alike. Can I still use material from Wikimedia Commons without sharing?

Respectfully, Dr. Mark (levinemarkh@gmail.com)

All pictures and other files here are (supposed to be) published with a free license, otherwise they'd be deleted. Some are in the public domain. Some have a Creative Commons "by attribution" license, and you can't use them without the required attribution. Some have a CC "by attribution share alike" license, check out what that means on the CC site (the licenses are linked to the original info or legalese.) Some media have other free licenses, not all exactly suited for media, e.g. the GPL is arguably fine for software, but rather bizarre for images found in a GPL video game, or similar. Some media can be trademarked or touch personality rights despite of being otherwise free or in the public domain, in those cases you might need additional permissions, e.g., logos can be too simple to be copyrighted, and therefore in the public domain, but can be still trademarked. Depending on the laws of the country or countries where you plan to use the media. –Be..anyone (talk) 20:17, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
You don't mention what country. The following applies to U.S. and assumes you are talking strictly about classroom use, and have no intention of even putting the materials on line or in print ("print" includes handouts); if it's a different country, or your intentions are different that I gleaned, rules may vary, and keep in mind that I am not a lawyer.
 • In practice, there is little reason to worry about the copyright status of the materials you are using except insofar as it's enforced by the institution where you work. It's simply not an infringement anyone will ever pursue.
 • Public domain (PD) images present no issues whatever. You can do with those as you like.
 • Educational purposes allow a lot of leeway for fair use. I can't imagine any court ever deciding that (for example) you would be required to display the terms of a license for materials used in such a circumstance.
 • I would suggest that rather than concern yourself with the letter of the law, that each slide for any non-PD images you use in this context should clearly credit the author and/or rights-holder, and should state what is the relevant license (e.g. "CC-BY-SA 3.0", or "GFDL" or whatever applies).
Again, the above is based on practicality and the notion of fair use, not on tight legalism. - Jmabel ! talk 23:58, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
Just to add a note regarding alteration: nothing on this site is allowed to carry restrictions on derivative usage, be it extraction of elements or details, recolouring, superimposition of titles or other graphics, or merely inclusion in a slide. Nor does one have to show any credits that may be required on the image itself. So you shouldn’t be concerned about that aspect: ND (no derivatives) is often seen in Creative Commons licences, but we don’t accept those here.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:13, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi, can you please help me get a picture edited

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Public_opinion_of_same-sex_marriage_in_USA_by_state.svg

This is the link for the picture i am trying to get edited. As per a recent poll, which is cited on the public support for same sex marriage page, marriage equality has 53% support in Ohio which means it should be at solid blue on the map. Could you help me get Ohio's picture on the map changed to solid blue? Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Doerandom1 (talk • contribs)

 1. SVG help is available at Commons:Graphic Lab/Illustration workshop. Ask there, because that is where the people who do his sort of thing "hang out".
 2. Separately from that, I would think anything about polling data should be for a specific date, so I wonder a little about changing just one state without having a specific citation for where the polling data comes from. - Jmabel ! talk 15:34, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

Can someone help with identifying if the image Arvind_Iyer.jpg has the right copyright code on it.It was found via http://www.arvindiyer.com on http://www.arvindiyer.com/Arvind_Iyer.jpeg

The source image doesn’t seem to be available at that link any more, but CC0 is a free licence, more or less equivalent to public domain. The file here should be tagged with Cc-zero.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 03:24, 5 March 2015 (UTC)

491st Bombers group (Incorrect image: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:491patch.png)

I apologize - new to all of this and not sure how deeply involved I want to get - seems very confusing.

I recently ran across an incorrect image for the WWII 491st Bombers group at: File:491patch.png Unfortunately this image is incorrect and appears to be the image that I originally created back in 2002 when I created the official 491st.org web page. I created it from black and white art and randomly colorized yellow and uploaded to the web site. I later learned from 491st officials that the image was incorrect - the 491st organization patch (and 491st BG B-24 aircraft vertical stabilizer) color scheme was distinctly green with white stripe - it never was yellow. The web image was fixed long ago and now correctly appears at http://www.491st.org/about491.html The 491st color scheme is documented on page 6 of the 491st History: http://www.491st.org/491hist6.html - I do not know how to get the requested change made but the patch should not be yellow - I was informed of this emphatically. The official 491st organization has disbanded, however I try to maintain the website even though updates are few and far between. Original members of this bombers group are disappearing each year but officials from the 491st who are still available for discussion and confirmation are: Chris Dracopolis chrisdracopoulos@aol.com (491st Board of Directors Secretary) and Al Blue alblue@earthlink.net (Author of the official 491st History http://www.491st.org/491hist.htm )

I do not have any images of higher resolution although I might try to recreate if needed. Many thanks for any guidance you can offer in this matter. Bob Godshall bgodshal@surewest.net — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bgodshal (talk • contribs) 07:03, 3 March 2015‎ (UTC)

 • You can't over write the file as your account isn't going to be autoconfimed, so the easiest way to deal with this is to upload the file again, with a different name and replace the yellow version with the green version in Wiki. After this you can either leave the yellow version as an incorrect alternative, or request its deletion as being out of scope (per COM:SCOPE images should have educational value, you could argue being incorrect it doesn't, and being the uploader would add weight to your argument). ColonialGrid (talk) 08:08, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
 • I actually meant in any Wikipedia that it may be used in, but yes, it is currently only on use at English Wikipedia (things change though, someone may use it in another Wikipedia between now and it being replaced). ColonialGrid (talk) 14:59, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

delete my 3 pictures, and i have the copyright - Help

Last week i've tried to upload 3 images of our website - www.bricomarche.pt - into wikimedia, to use them to create/edit, our wikipédia page. But they were deleted, and now i can't re-upload them again... All the images are property of Bricomarché Portugal, and they are available in our website page - www.bricomarché.pt Can you please help me? Thanks

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Mapa Lojas.jpg, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (File:Mapa Lojas.jpg).

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Img fachada.jpg, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (File:Img fachada.jpg).

Thanks for uploading File:Logo Brico.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or send an email with copy of a written permission to OTRS (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). This also applies if you are the author yourself. — Preceding unsigned comment added by PGadeiro (talk • contribs)

 • Commons only accepts file that are freely licenced, and as you say the images are on another website, we have no way of knowing what their copyright or licence status is. You have to get the copyright holder to contact COM:OTRS (in português) to certify that they are available under a free licence. When they are confirmed to be appropriately licenced they will be undeleted. ColonialGrid (talk) 12:08, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
 • Thnks for the quick answer. But i am the person responsible for the bricomarche web site in portugal. The images are our, and we accept to put them free... — Preceding unsigned comment added by PGadeiro (talk • contribs)
 • Great, just shoot off an email to COM:OTRS releasing the images and they should be undeleted. Also keep in mind that under some circumstances the copyright will be transferred to the client, while under others it will be retained by the photographer; if in doubt you should contact the photographer to clear it up. Picture that I own but I didn't take

Hi, some time ago when my father began as major of our city we paid a photographer to take photos of him, I want to use one of those photos for his (my father) page on Wikipedia but I don't know how to do it because I'm the owner of the work but I'm not the author of it, can you help me?

It’s generally presumed that the photographer owns the copyrights on commissioned work—unless either the law in that jurisdiction or the hiring contract specifies otherwise. The ownership of a print, or even the original negative, has no bearing on the intellectual property involved. If you or your father does own the copyright, then all you need do is e-mail OTRS with the details, including the terms under which the rights were transferred and a statement releasing the image under a free licence. Otherwise you will have to ask the photographer to similarly issue a release.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:09, 4 March 2015 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding S-Cooke, John (1).jpg

Hi,

I have the written consent of the photographer that we have "full right to use this image in reproduction of portraits, publication on any and all digital websites and internet exchanges", but I'm not sure which of the technical licenses that falls under?

Thanks --Elemont.aide (talk) 21:43, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

That statement doesn’t seem sufficient: to be considered “free” a licence must apply to everyone, not just you (and whoever else may be included in that “we”), and must permit all kinds of usage and modification, not just reproduction and publication on websites. Please review COM:Licensing and ask the photographer to explicitly release the photo under an appropriate licence like CC-BY-SA.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:19, 4 March 2015 (UTC)

Photo copyright and reuse question (musician looking for album cover)

Hello, I am a musician and I design all of my own album covers. I am looking at using this image :

(http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:View_at_timberline,_dark_foreground,_light_snow_capped_mountain,_gray_sky,_%22Rocky_Mountain_National_Park._Never_Summer_R_-_NARA_-_519960.jpg#filehistory)

I looked under the information and it did not give me distinct terms of usage. I will more than likely not be making any money off of this album but I would be posting it all over social media and youtube. Am I able to add some visual effects and my logo on it to advertise and publicize without getting in copyright trouble? A yes or a no is what I am looking for and if so, under which stipulations apply (if any). Thanks.

I am also from Canada if it only concerns a certain country.

The file is marked as public domain here, and “unrestricted” at the source; apparently Adams was working for the US Government when he shot it. There should be no problem publishing this image, either as is or incorporated into a derivative work. I would suggest using the TIFF version, which I expect will be a little cleaner than the JPEG, especially if you’ll be printing it as well as posting it online. Hard to tell, the source kde-look.org is certainly not Apple, does not (more) show this picture, or I missed it, and from my POV with a VAIO laptop it looks like some VAIO (formerly Sony) wallpaper. Maybe it's a simple result of math, and talking about copyrights makes no sense. Or it was really an Apple wallpaper, check out the deletion procedure here if you plan to nominate it for deletion. It's INUSE, you'll get lots of questions why you think that it's not free. –Be..anyone (talk) 22:20, 5 March 2015 (UTC)

Media Files Nominated for Deletion

I have been notified in German that the following are to be deleted File:Plas Duon 06.png and File:Plas Duon 05.png and Crown Copyright in Wales. File:Garth, Guilsfield 14.png. File:Garth, Guilsfield 16.png File:Garth, Guilsfield 12.png File:Snowdonia Houses.png File:Plas Duon 01.png File:Plas Duon 03.png File:Plas Duon 07.png File:Plas Duon 04.png File:Plas Duon 05.png The Open Government Licence for Public Sector Information for these is governed by http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/information-management/legislation/public-records-act/concordat-welsh-public-records/ and a concordat was signed by the Permanent Secretary to the Welsh Assembly Government and The National Archives on 7th Dec. 2010. This covers: a) administrative and departmental records belonging to her Majesty which are records of the Welsh Assembly Government and c) any records belonging to her Majesty which are records of any office, commission, .....concerned with Welsh affairs. The concordat therefore covers the records of Royal Commission of Ancient and Historical in Wales (RCAHMW) in two ways, both as a Department of Welsh Government and as a commision into Welsh affairs. This concordat is still operative see http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documents/information-management/welsh-government-ima-report.pdf as published December 2014. Section 146 of GOWA 2006 provides that Welsh public records are governed by the Public Records Act until such time that the Lord Chancellor makes an Order under section 147 imposing or conferring functions in respect of them (for example, a duty to preserve them) on either the Welsh Ministers, or a member of staff of the Welsh Government. In the event that such an order were made, this would, in effect, provide the authority to create a Welsh National Public Record Office. In view of this an Open Government Licence for Public Sector Information applies to RCAHMW and its website [1] As I believe I made the correct copyright acknowledgement to the RCAHMW is given and I gave a precise link to information on their website- Coflein-I believe that source given for these files is correctly licensed as Crown Copyright and has the correct permission by the Welsh Government to use these as illustrations on Wikimedia Commons. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tyssil (talk • contribs)

According to http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/information-management/re-using-public-sector-information/copyright/delegations-authority/ the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historic Monuments of Wales can license the re-use of Crown copyright material under delegation of authority. You did upload files from RCAHMW Collections, the caption of the uploads I checked reads "Copyright Reserved; contact RCAHMW for details". --Martin H. (talk) 20:40, 4 March 2015 (UTC)
JFTR, the files starting with Plas_Duon_06.png are now deleted, after more than a week of No permission since. Very likely the admin wasn't aware of this last minute help desk request, maybe ask him how to proceed (IANAL, and this Welsh case sounds rather convoluted.) If you don't come to some agreement you can also try UNDELetion requests.
If you ever have a similar problem here flip No permission since to an ordinary Delete for a "deletion request", and add Vote keep with the reasons why you actually disagree with this request. The No permission since can be only stopped by, as the name says, a PERMISSION, or delayed by an ordinary deletion procedure, or delayed by an OTRS pending, that's a permission sent by e-mail or similar, but not yet processed by OTRS.
The latter is anyway no problem, deleted files with a permission arriving too late will be simply undeleted. But an unstopped and undelayed No permission since is a hard timeout, and in this case your question here came too late, sorry. –Be..anyone (talk) 21:59, 5 March 2015 (UTC)

Low resolution crop duplicate

From the looks of it, File:JohnvonNeumann-LosAlamos.jpg is a lower resolution crop of File:JohnvonNeumann-LosAlamos.gif. What's the right way to deal with this? Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 13:08, 5 March 2015 (UTC)

In the line other versions= mention JPEG version on the page of the GIF, and mention the GIF in "other versions" on the page of the JPEG. The formats are seriously different, it's no problem if commons offers both, and users pick what they need for their purposes. Presumably they'll pick the JPEG, but there could be valid technical reasons to use the GIF. –Be..anyone (talk) 22:34, 5 March 2015 (UTC)

SVG of existing logo generated

Hello, I have generated an SVG version of the logo on this page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:United_Airlines_1993_logo.png#file) per the notated request. How do I go about uploading it?

@SamwiseVT: You can upload it to the English Wikipedia (this is Wikimedia Commons, an image repository that does not accept fair-use images). The name has to be different before the extension, so it would have to be something like "United Airlines 1993 logo vector.svg" Anon124 (+2) ( ) 18:10, 5 March 2015 (UTC)

File usage, creative commons

Greeting, I would like to add this picture: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ingnl/6707971033/ to use in the wikipedia article Duisenberg School of Finance. The page says that the author granted usage rights by creative commons. The caption for the picture is: DSF and industry partners. ING director Nick Jue and dean Dirk Schoenmaker. Is it possible to upload this picture and use it with this caption for the article? I will provide a link to the original source on flickr.

Yes, you can upload it here, with credit to the source; the CC-BY-SA 2.0 licence is fine. I can’t advise you about the rest: any discussion of whether or not it’s suitable for the Wikipedia article, or over what caption it should appear, belongs on that article’s talk page, not here.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:22, 5 March 2015 (UTC)

We can only accept images that are either in the public domain or appropriately licensed. I'm guessing that this "selfie" would not be public domain (your context suggests something contemporary so unless the photo is, for example, taken by a U.S. federal government employee as part of their job, it will be copyrighted by default).
Google is certainly not the source of the image, so they are irrelevant here. If the blog contents are already appropriately free-licensed, then you can upload based on that license. If not, you'd need a license granted by the person who took the photo. See COM:OTRS for what we'd need. - Jmabel ! talk 19:01, 6 March 2015 (UTC)

Bildnotizen in de.Wikipedia

Delete previous versions

I made a mistake. I forgot that the picture I was editing was a copyrighted image. I uploaded a new version of higher resolution. The higher resolution is not the lower resolution that the copyright holder agreed on. Would you please go to File:Steinway & Sons upright piano, model 1098, manufactured at Steinway's factory in New York City.jpg and under "File history" delete the three latest versions. The only correct versions that should be shown should be the two versions from 2012. --Nobelpeopleuploader (talk) 22:24, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

Logo _ Upload

Hi there,

I'm willing to upload a logo picture to one of my wikipedia page.I'm unsure about the copy rights. Please help me guide to upload a picture . Here is the link of the image I would like to upload. I represent the below company,so i have everything what wikipedia needs.

Many Thanks ! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ronaldlobo (talk • contribs)

 • I think that image may fall below the threshold of originality regarding copyright (assuming it's a US logo). But, if you want to be certainly safe that it won't be nominated for deletion in the future you are best off following the procedures at COM:OTRS and giving an unambiguous release of rights under a CC licence (others may, however, disagree and state it to be certainly below TOO). Ship capstan photo

While a paid passenger on a tall ship I took a photo of some capstans used to raise the sails. Can I use this photo in the article Capstan Equation?EE483597 (talk) 16:14, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

If I understand correctly your question, ther are two issues. First: May you upload your photo here? The answer is clear: Yes, you may if you have taken it. There are some exceptions, when some copyrighted entities show up too much, for example, if you have a Coca-Cola banner taking up half of the picture, but otherwise it is ok. Second: Whether you may use the photo in the Wikipedia article. The answer is: Yes, you may, but in Wikipedia (we are here at Wikimedia Commons, not at Wikipedia) other editors might have a different opinion - for example, that the photo is not suitable for illustrating the article. In this case, you will need to discuss the issue at the talk page of the article.--Ymblanter (talk) 19:11, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

People of Estonia

Why is there a category Category:Men of Estonia but not a category Category:Women of Estonia? JIP (talk) 22:09, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

There are men by country and women by country, just create the missing category if you have something to put in it. –Be..anyone (talk) 00:09, 10 March 2015 (UTC)
Because a user did not like the category "Women of Estonia" and removed it. (Although he did not remove the category "Men of Estonia"). See the history of the category page. If you look at the list of the user's contributions, you'll see that he/she did the same thing with other categories of women of Estonia, such as "Actresses from Estonia", "Female vocalists from Estonia", "Women of Estonia by occupation", etc. You can get an idea of his reasons on this page. He is of the opinion that categories of people should not be separated by sex. This is a debate that has popped up from time to time on Commons. There may be valid opinions on each side for or against it. You can see in the page histories of those categories that users disagree about the matter and there have been edit conflicts. So, right now, the current state of each such category about people of Estonia depends on which user last made an edit of removal or of restoration on that category page. For example, the most recent restoration on the category "Female vocalists from Estonia" was made by a user who thinks the categories should exist, so that category currently exists, whereas the most recent removal on the categories "Actresses from Estonia" and "Women of Estonia" was made by a user who thinks the categories should not exist, so those pages are currently redirections to categories not separated by sex. -- Asclepias (talk) 02:54, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

PDB Files

Hi,

I uploaded some Protein Data Bank files a week ago and they were deleted. I believe I had specified all the qualifications for the copyright, as part of the stipulation on the RCSB site is that the uploaders are agreeing to free use of their images. Let me know if you can undo the deletion of my uploads.

Thanks Ajit — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ajit_Vakharia (talk • contribs)

Check out COM:UNDEL for undeletion requests, ideally after you figured out what went wrong, e.g., for this file. All I (and you, if you look on your talk page and click on the red link) can see is that a bot tagged the image as possible copyright violation, and told you so on your talk page three days ago. Five hours later an admin deleted the image as suggested. –Be..anyone (talk) 00:21, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

 • Just wait for the OTRS request to be processed and then the file will be undeleted. You should also send an email to OTRS regarding File:Uk-poker-tournaments-winners- map.jpg (which I've just tagged) as it's in the same situation. Files which are uploaded here but are available on websites with copyright notices will be deleted as we can't verify the licence. Although I understand you may be annoyed, you would be even more annoyed if someone else uploaded your copyright images and we didn't delete them; it is done to protect copyright holders. OTRS is the process we verify licences, but it is volunteers, so sometimes takes a little time. Be patient and the file should be undeleted. ColonialGrid (talk) 13:03, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

Is there a policy regarding potentially unsafe use of school equipment?

Hi - I take full blame for this, but under my supervision, a potentially lethal classroom demonstration was posted at File:Van_Der_Graph_generator_in_parallel_with_a_Leyden_jar.png. Homes and schools are full of potentially lethal devices (including automobiles and football equipment), and it is unlikely that many students could get their hands on a Leyden jar plus a Van Der Graff generator. But as the student and I sort this out, we should also inquire whether commons has any policy in this regard. If so, please inform us.

If the image is deleted because it violates commons policy, I (user:Guy vandegrift take full blame for the decision error in judgement.--Guy vandegrift (talk) 19:56, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

P.S. I just noticed that I misspelled the name, and will attempt to move the page. I assume that if I can move it, I have permission to do so.--Guy vandegrift (talk)

I will postpone the page move until the safety question is sorted out.--Guy vandegrift (talk) 20:00, 10 March 2015 (UTC)
As long as the content is realistically useful for an educational purpose (in a broad sense) and publication is otherwise lawful, we don't censor it, even if it is potentially dangerous (though it would be a good idea to describe the dangers clearly on the file description). That said, if you or the uploader is not comfortable with the file being hosted here, you could bring it up for a deletion discussion. LX (talk, contribs) 20:20, 10 March 2015 (UTC)
Thanks.I had time to think it over, and I endorce it on commons. In our classroom it promotes safety by showing students that they should never touch capacitors, even after they have been "discharged". Very few high schools have this equipment. I will see the uploader in a few days, certainly less than a week.
@MarsLoveslions: if both of us are satisfied with the safety issue, then one of us will change the misspelled name. --Guy vandegrift (talk) 01:30, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

 • I've removed the speedy delete template as I don't think it's appropriate. However, there is nothing to suggest that this image is either freely licenced or in the public domain. The source listed appears to be the library it is located in, but that explains nothing about the provenance of the original. To assess if this image can be hosted here we need to know: what country it was produced in; who produced it; their date of death; and when it was published. I am assuming the file is Icelandic, therefore, it needs to comply with the criteria set out at Commons:Copyright rules by territory#Iceland to be in the public domain, if it does you should add the information about who produced it, when, and when they died to the information template, and place Template:PD-old-70 in the licence field. I understand that this may be a little daunting, but don't worry, we'll do our best to help if you get stuck, just tell us what you can about this image. My media is online, but I can't log in anymore

Hello,

I can't exactly remember my login information (user name, password), but since the images I posted on Wikimedia are still there (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:ListFiles/Herbst77regen) and name Herbst77regen as the author, this seems to be my username. It's certainly one I might use. If I try to login as Herbst77regen, however, it tells me that this user doesn't exist. If I type in the email-address I used (and this is the address where I got my "Welcome to Wikipedia!"-email one year ago (starting with "Hello Herbst77regen,")) and hit "reset password", it says "A password reset email has been sent." but I don't get one at that email address. What is going on?? 178.255.20.20 15:12, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

Did you check the spam folder? Ruslik (talk) 19:46, 11 March 2015 (UTC)
Almost edit conflict, that's what I wanted to write. There are more convoluted scenarios, e.g., somebody guessing your password correctly and changing the e-mail address as worst case, but most likely it is a simple problem somewhere on your side. –Be..anyone (talk) 19:54, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

But how can it be that user Herbst77regen who is mentioned as author of the images "doesn't exist" anymore at Wikimedia?? How can I get there to change the licences of the images (the have been abused by right wing press in an commercial article and I don't even believe that I ever gave the license to use it commercially in the first place - but that's the license the images bear on Wikimedia. Have they been like 'hijacked'???). There are no emails in the junk folder, of course I have checked that.178.255.20.20 14:20, 12 March 2015 (UTC)

OK, suddenly User Herbst77regen is back again and I even remembered my password. Strange. I swear this did not work yesterday... Thank!!!Herbst77regen (talk) 14:23, 12 March 2015 (UTC)

Category that wont work

A Spanish class for foreigners at Tec de Monterrey uploaded photos as part of a class project but there are problems in categorizatión.

E.G File:En_Zocalo.JPG

The first category for the photos was Category:Español intermedio 2. Grupo 1 Spring 2015 which when added to photos turns up red and the category page shows nothing. I thought the problem might be the period after the number 2, so I created a different category Category:Español básico 2 Grupo 1 Spring 2015, but the problem persists. I have not seen problems with files with accents and tildes before, so I dont think that is the issue but I am quite stumped by this.Thelmadatter (talk) 19:19, 12 March 2015 (UTC)

Please follow the link that is automatically provided when you attempt to create the category page. It identifies the problem and suggests how to solve it. In this case, it seems to be the invisible characters you added at the end of the string, after "2015". -- Asclepias (talk) 19:36, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
Ok I did this but the suggested "correction" makes no sense. It tells me to use "File:Espa%F1ol_b%E1sico_2_Grupo_1_Spring_2015%u200B" First of all this is not a file, but a category and second it does not telll me how the "bad characters" are being generate.Thelmadatter (talk) 19:49, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
What you copied above seems to be the analysis of the string, showing the characters. The problem is identified in red color. It is the last character in the string. The suggested correction is at the bottom of the page : "Sanitized title (without bad characters, normalized): File:Español_básico_2_Grupo_1_Spring_2015". Yes, it says "file", because I guess the script was basically to help users with checking file names, but just adapt the namespace for other types of pages. In this case, it would be "Category:Español básico 2 Grupo 1 Spring 2015". Actually, you correctly created that category at 19:13 today. You also correctly created the other category "Category:Español intermedio 2. Grupo 1 Spring 2015" on 4 February 2015 at 16:57. Now, in the description pages of the files, replace the wrong category name by the correct category name. To do that, just remove the invisible character. Position your cursor at the end of the category name and press the backspace key once. Preview and, if you did it right, you'll see the correct category linked in blue. Then save. I did one example there. The difference can't really be seen in the revision box, because the removed invisible character was, well, invisible. But the difference can be seen in the result, as the category is now linked in blue. What the users in the class have done to insert the superfluous invisible character in the description pages, you would have to ask them. It may have to do with how and from where they copied those category names. That being said, a different issue is that there doesn't seem to be an obvious thematic relation between the files that different users tried to place in the wrongly named categories and the names of those categories. Perhaps you wanted to use them not as thematic categories but as hidden maintenance categories? -- Asclepias (talk) 21:35, 12 March 2015 (UTC)

Can someone help me with this?

Hello,

As of today I added a file of a map for deletion including substantial amounts of sources, proof, etc for it being a wrong and misleading map. However, someone deleted it from the "categories for deletion" some time after I added it to it.[3] Can someone explain me why this happened? Did i do something wrong per the protocols while listing it? Can someone assist me in putting it correctly for deletion? I'm a new member on commons so I have no idea why this happened. If someone could help me out with that, that would be great. :)

Orangesaft (talk) 22:05, 12 March 2015 (UTC)

Hello, You had inserted the "delete" template in the wrong page. The "delete" template should be inserted in the description page of the file nominated for deletion. You had placed it in the page of the previous deletion request about the file. The result was that instead of being displayed as a deletion request of the file, it was displayed as a deletion request of the deletion request. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:44, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
For what it's worth, though, Commons rarely passes judgement on the accuracy of political boundaries on a map, and then only if it is a matter of whether it accurately represents what some particular source says, and that only if the accompanying text claims to do so. (We would pass judgment on something simply not showing accurate landmasses, or doing something as silly as labeling Spain as "France".) For example, if you say "CIA map of India" it had better be a CIA map. But where there is dispute (e.g. in the case of India, whether to include Kashmir), we allow multiple conflicting maps and let the various Wikipedias and other users sort out which they want. - Jmabel ! talk 01:05, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
Yep I have that all covered up. The map is just plain wrong. Not even misleading, but wrong per the sources we have. Thanks both for your input guys, however I still find myself unable to put it correctly for deletion. Am I still doing something wrong? I put the tag on the main page of the article, and that's all Indid for now. 4 Can someone guide me where to go next? I just don't know what to do now even after reading that deleting guide 2 times. Can someone guide me further after this step (I put the tag on the main page and edited the reason etc already) I would sincerely appreciate it. :) Orangesaft (talk) 01:23, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
You can reformat your nomination on the deletion request page, simply writing it without the template. I did it for you. If you want to edit your nomination or add to it or discuss the matter further, you can do it on the deletion request page: Commons:Deletion requests/File:South Asia (ed)update.PNG. Please centralize your comments about that file there as much as possible. When a deletion nomination is made, that's where users will expect the discussion to take place. If you make a deletion nomination about another file in the future, you can click the link "nominate for deletion" on the description page of the file in question and the various elements should end up in the right places. -- Asclepias (talk) 02:17, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

Bulk categorize uploaders files

I would like to bulk categorize a number of files by an uploader but I do not know of a way to do this. VisualFileChange ("perform batch task") seems to be mainly geared toward deletions and such. while Cat-a-lot seems to be geared toward moving/reorganizing many items already present in a single, shared category (the items I seek to categorize are present in multiple, disparate categories). I can categorize each file individually by hand but, this is rather cumbersome, time-consuming and what I am seeking to avoid. Are there tools which provide this functionality? --dsprc (talk) 02:57, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

There are several ways to do this including with AWB. AWB has several ways to do this as well from simply using the append feature or using some basic code in a module. I recently asked for access and was denied, but I could write the code for you if you want to try to use that, I just have no way of testing it so you would need to be careful until we can get the bugs worked out. Reguyla (talk) 03:38, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
Cat-a-lot can also work with search-result pages, if that’s any help to you.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 04:16, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
@Reguyla: I use Linux and previous attempts to build an environment which would run AWB in Wine were unsuccessful.
@Odysseus1479: Can you use search to display a list of user uploads? IDK about the search syntax/params all that much to display that. --dsprc (talk) 04:36, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
Edit: I notice VisualFileChange also has an "append" feature; does this behave similar to AWB? Could I just append Category:Foo Bar Baz etc with that? --dsprc (talk) 04:42, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
VisualFileChange "append" feature works just fine for this. :) Have to do new lines yourself but seems OK. --dsprc (talk) 04:50, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
@Dsprc: glad to see you found an appropriate tool. JFTR regarding your question, not exactly (as far as I know): it depends on the uniqueness of the user name, how consistently it appears in uploads and how often it‘s been referenced elsewhere. For example, searching for my own handle in the File namespace I get all the uploads where my user name appears in the info template (all but some early ones AFAICT), as well as the odd ‘false positive’ where someone’s credited me in the attribution history of a derivative graphic. So it doesn’t work too badly in my case, but I can imagine several circumstances in which it wouldn‘t be much use.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 05:50, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
@Dsprc: Sorry to hear you had trouble using AWB but glad you found a way to get what you needed. Reguyla (talk) 11:25, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

Questionable file name

Recently an editor uploaded some photos. They are good pics, but my concern is that he incorporates his name into the file name File:Phil_Robertson_by_Gage_Skidmore.jpg for example. This strikes me as promotional, so I was hoping some more experienced Commons editors would look an give an opinion. Niteshift36 (talk) 15:04, 4 March 2015 (UTC)

Seems fine to me, in the end of the day, he has taken the photo.--Ymblanter (talk) 18:59, 8 March 2015 (UTC)
 • No, attribution isn't advertising. Making your name part of the file isn't just attribution. Attribution is done on the file page, along with licensing. Whatever, it's clearly supported. Niteshift36 (talk) 17:02, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

need to explain on wikipedia why their files are in a hidden category

On wikipedia, a Sustainable Sanitation Alliance editor wants to know how all her images ended up in a hidden category on the Commons: Category:Files created by Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA). I understand that this category is for maintenance. Who created that category? And was it created because all those files have a template for "Sustainable Sanitation Alliance" on them? Thanks, EChastain (talk) 16:15, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

It's not an obligation, but it's a common practice to have a maintenance category when a large number of files are copied from a flickr account. It helps to keep track of the files from that source. To see who created the category, you can look at the history of the category page. The category was not created because the files have a custom license template, as technically one could have been created and the other not, but we could say that the creation of the category and the creation of the template were both inspired by practical considerations from the fact that there are many files from the same source. For more information about the upload of those files, you can probably ask the users EvM-Susana and . Because the files from that organization are copied to Commons from the flickr account of the organization, I understand EvM-Susana's comment on en.wp as meaning that the files copied to Commons from that account are those that are available there, and that's why EvM-Susana would try to find files from other sources, including flickr accounts of other people, to copy to Commons. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:49, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
Thank you very very much. It was EvM-Susana who asked me on en:wiki, but they must have forgotten their role in it. I'll convey this info to them. Best, EChastain (talk) 19:21, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

renaming images

I’ve just uploaded four photographs to wiki Commons and found that I needed to edit the filenames as the credit did not show when I embedded the photographs within Wikipedia. I’ve included the credit in the title but this is not what shows when embedded within Wikipedia, only the file name. That is not explained during the upload process, which is very unfriendly. I’ve been through the help on renaming images and despite having some experience in computer programming, and finding it very bewildering.

The help facility tells me to:

If you are the uploader and recently uploaded the file, review Commons:File naming and add the following template to the file description page: ({rename|1=new name.jpg|2=1|3=uploader request: please rename to fix .. }), where |2= isa number from 1 to 7 (with 2=1 being for Uploader requested).

But this is a language I don’t understand. Is there a way for me to delete the images and start all over again?

Parts of Wikipedia are very friendly but I have found Wikimedia Commons far worse. Help . . . . — Preceding unsigned comment added by MrArmstrong2 (talk • contribs) 19:21, 13 March 2015‎ (UTC)

@MrArmstrong2: Credits for images can be found by clicking on the image. There is no need to rename a file to give credit in the name. Anon126 ( ) 19:53, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
I'm guessing the four photos you speak of are File:Grave of Walter Myers in Para, Brazil.jpg, File:Headstone of Walter Myers grave in Para, Brazil.jpg, File:Yellow fever laboratory in Para, Brazil.JPG and File:Walter Myers' memorial tablet at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.jpg. Are you really the original photographer, as you have claimed? At least the third one appears to be quite old.
You say that you want to rename the photos, as I understand it so that your user name will be displayed next to the photo when it is used on Wikipedia. Normally, neither the file name nor attribution appears directly on Wikipedia pages. Instead, it is displayed when you click on the image. This is similar to how printed encyclopædias often have a "Image credits" page near the cover. So renaming the files won't really help, if I understand your intentions correctly. But if you still want to rename them, and you can't make sense of how templates work, you can just enable the RenameLink gadget in your preferences and use that instead. (The gadget should be enabled by default, but since you're asking about how to use the template manually, I'm guessing it's not.) Deleting files just to rename them won't be helpful either, as you'll probably just run into mechanisms designed to prevent people from reuploading previously deleted content.
I'm sorry you feel you've been treated unfriendly. I had a look at your user talk page and at pages that link to your user talk page to find discussions about or involving you, but I couldn't find any evidence of unfriendly comments. Could you link to any examples? LX (talk, contribs) 20:14, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

Uploading with permission

Hello, I know several people who would agree with uploading their photos on Commons under CC-BY-SA, but they either don't have time for uploading or don't want to lose their time with it. Can I upload photos of these people, mention them as authors and maybe write on brackets "uploaded with permission" or something like that without OTRS? They're just individuals, not institutions with webpages where they might release their photos under licenses etc. Thank you. --2A00:1028:83B8:3696:CD9A:5FA6:CFDD:EA58 20:08, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

No. See Commons:OTRS#If you are not the copyright holder. Uploading a file typically takes far less time than correctly filling out and submitting an OTRS consent declaration. LX (talk, contribs) 20:18, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
They could provide a single OTRS authorizing this user to upload numerous copyrighted images on their behalf, which could be quicker than uploading numerous images. - Jmabel ! talk 17:49, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

Photobucket items

Hi, I searched the archives but most things are years old. What's the latest on whether it's possible to use photos from Photobucket and/or what steps are required, other than the usual getting permission from the creator of the material? CtrlXctrlV (talk)

The latest? Have there been any major changes at that site that would lead you to assume that Commons:Bad sources#Photobucket.com no longer applies? LX (talk, contribs) 16:37, 14 March 2015 (UTC)
They do appear to have updated their terms (including the removal of clause numbers) since our last review. From a quick reading it seems they now acknowledge the irrevocability of free licences, but OTOH there’s a pretty emphatic non-commercial stipulation that’s incompatible with Commons.
That said, I can’t see a problem with independently obtained permissions registered with OTRS; that the author (presumed to be verifiable) is a Photobucket user shouldn’t prejudice the process.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:47, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

Deletion of Pictures on New Page

Hello. I am new to editing on Wiki. I am working on my fist page for my grandfather that is still in my sandbox here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Iamevantheodore/sandbox

Over the past week since I began writing, each of my uploaded pictures have been deleted. These pictures have ALL been in the possession of my family and I literally scanned them all straight out of my mother dresser drawer. One of the picture was even taken by my grandmother (his wife). After looking over the various reasons for deletion, I added all known (and accurate) copyright information I have. Each individual photographer was credited as well as the collections these photo are currently apart of.

As I am not a pro at HTML, I am having some serious problems understanding EXACTLY WHICH copyright selections I need to choose for these types of pictures. ALL OF THEM are in the public domain, available at museums and on the web (with the exception of the one taken by own grandmother.) ---- I would really like to complete this page PRIOR to publishing as he was an important figure in that era and I would like these particular pictures to be included. This page is needed quickly as NYC is preparing to honor him with a street naming. This entry will help expedite the process. PLEASE HELP. What EXACTLY (in terms I can understand) am I NOT doing properly? ... so I can rectify this persistent issue. Thank you, Evan Stent — Preceding unsigned comment added by Iamevantheodore (talk • contribs)

Files - Evidence?

I have an article and I upload a file here on wiki common - can I use that file as a source/evidence for my article?

Eg: 1st licensed shop in 1900 > uploaded license as pd-old/pd-scan > used in article.

Also how can I use newspaper articles (pdf) as reference here on wiki common?

Krystel Espiritu (talk) 06:22, 16 March 2015 (UTC)

 • I am sorry, but am a little confused as to how you need help. We do not really cite things at Commons, so I do not understand how you would like to use a newspaper as a reference, could you please explain? Also, as we only host media, how it is used on a Wikipedia is not for us to say, that is generally referred to as a content issue, and should be discussed at the Wikipedia article's talk page. ColonialGrid (talk) 08:07, 16 March 2015 (UTC)
Sorry for the confusion, I'm referring to a newspaper articles/documents which was not re-scanned and published online but have been published and distributed. Krystel Espiritu (talk) 06:57, 17 March 2015 (UTC)
That still doesn't explain how you wish to use these documents (or what they are). If you want to use them as a citation on a Wikipedia that is a content issue, and should be dealt with at the specific Wikipedia article. If you want to upload them here, make sure they are either freely licenced, or in the public domain of both the US and the country of origin. Does this help answer your question? If not can you please provide more information, such as explaining what the documents are and how you wish to use them (please remember that specific questions get specific answers, vague questions get vague answers). ColonialGrid (talk) 07:17, 17 March 2015 (UTC)
Krystel Espiritu, when citing a source it is usually not necessary for that source to be available online. It is quite sufficient to provide the source information of the newspaper article (newspaper name, issue number, page etc.). If you wish you can upload the scanned article (provided it is in public domain or freely licensed), but there is no requirement to do so. MKFI (talk) 09:24, 17 March 2015 (UTC)
@ColonialGrid: Yes, actually it does help and @MKFI: and thank you for that clarification I was afraid that if I didn't provide a bunch of links that I needed to upload a lot of documents online so that I could cite them. Krystel Espiritu (talk) 11:01, 17 March 2015 (UTC)

Advice for temporary uploads

Hi, I ask for an advice about temporary uploads. On 21. March we run a workshop for (hopefully) new users on swahili wikipedia at a secondary school in Morogoro - Tanzania.

As part of it I want participants to upload image files as an exercise and discuss the technical side together with copyright issues. I have to prepare some photographs to have enough material around for the exercise; all participants will be absolute newcomers. But it will not really be valuable pics; It would not be any harm if they (or some) are erased after the workshop and later everyone who is going to continue will start over.

Is it ok to join each upload to a category "Morogoro 2015 workshop" and later to erase from that list? (and just before I get too high high-tech advice: have a look at a classroom - but yes, they have a computer room and are online most of the time)

Or is there a better way for this exercise purpose? (if possible kindly reply to my sw-userpage) Kipala (talk) 09:34, 16 March 2015 (UTC)

How do I view a specific image using a file name?

When I do a search for a specific artist's work I put the name of the painting followed by the artist's name (e.g. Saint Matthew - Rembrandt), Wikimedia Commons returns the image and the FILE NAME. How do I go back in and pull up that same image using just the FILE NAME? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mcintyre325 (talk • contribs) 11:55, 16 March 2015‎ (UTC)

The evangelist Matthew and the angel by Rembrandt
Not sure what you mean by "go back in and pull up" (where?) – do you mean how to use it in an article? You'd use something like , which yields the result shown on the right. LX (talk, contribs) 12:16, 16 March 2015 (UTC)

Yes, but how did you get to that image with just using the FILE NAME? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mcintyre325 (talk • contribs) 12:48, 16 March 2015‎ (UTC)

@Mcintyre325: You can also type a file name in the search box and get to it that way. Is that what you are asking about? Anon126 ( ) 12:54, 16 March 2015 (UTC)

i created a wikipedia page on Suzzanna Mukherjee, can you please tell me where is that page. I can see it — Preceding unsigned comment added by Joydeep ghosh (talk • contribs)

 • You posted this to Commons, not a Wikipedia (I know it can be a little confusing, but Commons is an image repository, not an encyclopaedia). You have uploaded an image here: File:Suzzanna Mukherjee.jpg (which will likely be deleted through copyright concerns unless you can prove it to be suitably licenced); and have contributed to an Suzzanna Mukherjee's article on English Wikipedia, found at en:Suzanna Mukherjee. Are either of these what you are looking for? ColonialGrid (talk) 13:12, 16 March 2015 (UTC)

Help page for organizations

Do we have a help page for organizations (here: sports federations) that might be willing to contribute high quality CC-by-sa images to Commons? It would be nice to have (1) a description of the beneficial impact of freely usable high quality media files, (2) a comprehensive and clear overview of legal aspects regarding CC licenses, and (3) a list of practical suggestions how to upload… —MisterSynergy (talk) 23:01, 16 March 2015 (UTC)

 1. Do you mean the benefits to the donor (the organization) or the beneficiaries (everyone who uses the content)? If you mean the former, I think the message you'd want to convey depends too much on what their motivations and what they wish to achieve to have a one-size-fits-all "sales pitch," but Commons:Guide to content partnerships contains some possible items under the "What do you get?" heading. If you mean the latter, that would be easier to answer, but I'm not sure we have such a page today. File:CreativeCommons.webm is a good introduction on the topic (but also mentions non-commercial and non-derivative restrictions that aren't allowed on Wikimedia Commons), and also brings us to the next point.
 2. Creative Commons licensing ties into copyright law, which is far too big a subject to cover comprehensively in the true meaning of the word, but if the aforementioned video is a good start, the Creative Commons FAQ is a good continuation.
 3. Commons:Guidance for paid editors covers some practical issues. If we're talking about hundreds of files or more, Commons:Guide to batch uploading might also be relevant. LX (talk, contribs) 00:54, 17 March 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, @LX, for your comments, they’re already quite useful! Let me add some background to clarify the situation.
Here in particular I think of a national rowing federation, but it could be considered as a representative example for many others that govern a field of sports with rather poor media coverage. In spite of having an Olympic sports with a nearly world wide recognition and several annual top-class events, there is only a spare amount of high-quality, freely usable photographic material available. However, quite often these federations hire their own photographers to produce high-quality material of (inter)national top-class events. They put it on their websites then, often with copyright claims, and that’s it. I would be surprised, if they earn much money with grants of licenses.
However, recently I heard that they don’t oppose freely usable images generally. My impression is, that they just don’t know how to handle it properly. It would be great if there were a comprehensive introduction how to put images to Commons in a way that they are happy with, including convincing reasons how they and others could benefit from doing so. I guess there are a lot of things to consider, but I’m not experienced enough to write them down all by myself.
Thus, additional input and thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks and regards, —MisterSynergy (talk) 11:06, 17 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi - I'd like to upload my company logo but when I tried it was deleted. We obviously own the rights to it when it was created for us. Hi, The property of the paintings does not determine the copyright, but if the painter from Europe died in 1942, the paintings are in the public domain. For US painters, it is more complex. Regards, Yann (talk) 09:40, 17 March 2015 (UTC)

Wedding photographs at Bratislava Technical museum

When I visited Bratislava last July, I also visited the Technical museum near the main railway station. Out of sheer coincidence, there was a newly-wed couple getting their wedding photographs taken there. Seeing as it was a public place and not their church or home or whatever, I decided to also photograph them. I took great care to always stand behind the official professional photographer so as not to disturb his work at the slightest. I don't know who the couple or the professional photographer are, and I didn't ask for their permission. But none of them seemed to mind. They were too busy with taking their wedding photographs taken to pretty much even notice me. At least none of them approached me or said anything to me. Can I upload the photographs to Commons? JIP (talk) 20:16, 16 March 2015 (UTC)

 • I would guess so. Certainly Commons as such has no issue with them. The only possible issue is whether this would be a violation of personality rights law in Slovakia. Searching on "personality rights law in Slovakia" brings up a lot of material and at a quick read it looks like it's a complicated and contentious area. I'd suggest that at the very least you put the Personality rights template on these images; you might want to seek advice from someone familiar with the law in that country (I am not a lawyer in any country). - Jmabel ! talk 00:28, 17 March 2015 (UTC)
We can't provide legal advice, but as far as Commons' policies and guidelines are concerned, Commons:Photographs of identifiable people and Commons:Project scope#Must be realistically useful for an educational purpose are relevant here. If you do upload it, be sure to include personality rights on the file description page. LX (talk, contribs) 00:26, 17 March 2015 (UTC)

I added a question about this at the Slovak Wikipedia (how does one make an internal wikilink to a different project in a different language anyway?), at a page which I assume is the Reference Desk, but it looks like it can go for three-four months without edits, so I'm not sure I will get any replies. I know Wikipedia isn't supposed to provide legal advice, but I don't know of any other way to contact anyone who knows about law in Slovakia. JIP (talk) 19:04, 17 March 2015 (UTC)

Photo Help

I've uploaded two photos but I'm unsure if I tagged them correctly. Instructions are confusing and unclear to me. Can you help?

My first photo is the cover of a book written by Dean Wells. I just changed the License section to what I thought were the correct tags:

Non-free use rationale Non-free book cover

but then immediately received this warning: This media file may meet the criteria for speedy deletion. The given reason is: This file is copyrighted and not published under a free license, and the uploader asserts that the usage of this file is fair use, but fair use claims are not permitted on Commons. This file may be deleted without further notice. If the project that this file is to be used on allows fair use, and its usage would comply with the project's appropriate exemptions, please upload it locally.

The second photos I want to use for my article is of Dean Wells herself. Her husband is the photographer and gave me written permission to use the photo for the sole purpose of this article. Again, I am unclear what are the appropriate Tags to use.

Thank you for your assistance, Penslips PenslipsPenslips (talk) 13:11, 17 March 2015 (UTC)

 • Hi, sorry, but Commons doesn't allow fair-use, only freely licenced media can be uploaded here. As both of the images you have uploaded are subject to copyright, we cannot host them and they will likely be deleted soon. However, there are options. The first is, if you know the copyright holder, to have them release the media under a free licence by following the procedures at COM:OTRS. If this is not possible, you can likely host the images on a local Wikipedia project under fair-use provisions so long as it adds to the article and a free substitute cannot be found. The fair-use documentation for English Wikipedia can be found at en:WP:NFCC. I hope this helps. ColonialGrid (talk) 13:24, 17 March 2015 (UTC)

Phishing scam?

I received an email from Wikimedia Commons with a link to a page saying my account name needed to be renamed... is this a scam or true? https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Irthumper When I went to link this here I marked "to a wiki page" and got a notification saying "page does not exist". Guess that answers that...?? :/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.238.14.124 (talk • contribs) 02:42, 18 March 2015‎ (UTC)

That's not a scam. As the message on User talk:Irthumper explains, the account name here on Commons will be automatically renamed so that it can be made global across all Wikimedia projects. It can't today, because as seen on Special:CentralAuth/Irthumper, it clashes with an account on English Wikipedia. If you don't care (and you might not, since the account was only used once two years ago), you do not have to do anything. (Phishing scams usually don't tell you that you have the option of doing nothing.) If both accounts are yours and you want to keep your user name, log in (which should have an SSL certificate verified by GlobalSign – phishing scams usually don't point to secure login pages with certificates from trusted authorities) and merge your accounts. If only the Commons account is yours and you would like it changed to something other than the default choice, log in and go to Special:GlobalRenameRequest. How to specify attribution of my images?

Looking for a way to specify how I am attributed if some uses my work.

For example: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:JugendstilBikes_Miyata760SR08.jpg

If one were to use this file on the web she is asked to attribute me in the following manner: <a title="By JugendstilBikes (Own work) [CC BY-SA 3.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0)], via Wikimedia Commons" href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File%3AJugendstilBikes_Miyata760SR08.jpg"><img width="256" alt="JugendstilBikes Miyata760SR08" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/d1/JugendstilBikes_Miyata760SR08.jpg/256px-JugendstilBikes_Miyata760SR08.jpg"/></a>

The cc license text itself gave me the impression that the author can specify how they want to be attributed. And in fact I have noticed that some users have a a link as user name but I don't. That's just an example.

Is there a page where I can specify how I want to be attributed, say have a link to my account instead of just having the name of the account? Did I miss this during upload? Are there guidelines for specification?

thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by JugendstilBikes (talk • contribs)

 • In the photo you linked, you would be attributed as "JugendstilBikes". Apart from that I'm having a little trouble understanding how to help you. If you would like to change your name in the Author field, you may, just please use a pipe so the link is still attached to your username. If you would like to have the CC template have your name, you can add that to the Template:Self. ColonialGrid (talk) 07:39, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

All overall usability of wikimedia commons

I'm struggling some time now to address this issue. But I thought I rather share my thoughts then stop using something I highly believe in. I am an outspoken fan of the cc license model and I truly believe it can save a wast amount of intellectual work from being forgotten and never used again.

So I started my own account quite a time back. I have a tons of high quality pictures from bicycles, tools and graphics due to my work as a bicycle technican, blogger, photographer and graphic enthusiast. I guess that's just how people are nowadays. I use all of these just once. It's mostly to show the customer the current status of restoring or publishing something on my blog. So the amount of images which I am willing to share is definitely not limiting my contribution to wikimedia commons.

From the beginning I experienced a feeling during my use of wikimedia commons, that holds my contribution back. I feel overwhelmed by the complexity and amount of information I have to deal with in order to contribute. I'm willing to share my experiences if I would now how and where in order to improve the situation. I don't think listing them separately as issues or tickets will do any good since it is a general usability topic.

In case it's just me... I understand that adaptation and programming is a lot of effort and probably not justified by a minority of users. But I have reason to believe that this is a major issue. Please point me to the right direction.

I think it may be possible that one of those (or perhaps more) are mine, set up when working in the US and/or Western European countries.

As I've only just got back into Wikipedia I do not know how to look for ids and their details. Is it possible, for instance, to see edits/posts made by my namesake are mine.

The message was directed to User:Karmosin, but your former talk page redirects to your current talk page, so the notification was sent to your current talk page instead and was therefore made more confusing. Some of the Karmosin accounts are not attached to SUL. Log in as Karmosin, go to Special:MergeAccount and follow the instructions. Image permission confusion

Hi,

I'm a new user and uploaded an image for the first time and did not tick that it was free work when it was. I have since realised that it has been deleted because it did not have permission and now I cannot upload it again. I realise this was my mistake as I ticked the wrong box but I'm not sure what to do now!

The image I uploaded which should have been registered as free work is Tenniel Chu headshot 01.03.15. Can you help me with my mistake?

Many thanks, Charlotte --Charlottecourtleeds (talk) 11:10, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

 • I can't see any uploads in your logs, so assume you uploaded it under another account. However, if the image is available on the the internet under a free licence, you should comment on the talk page of the admin who deleted the file, explaining the situation and providing proof of free licence and they should undelete it. Alternatively, if you know the copyright holder, or they have released the media under a free licence to you (and by extension others), you should get them to follow the procedures at COM:OTRS and it should be undeleted. ColonialGrid (talk) 11:53, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

Inaccurate file name

File:Patrologia Latina Vol 59 Hanging at a torture stake.png is an editor's personal assembly of snippets from volume 60, not 59, of Patrologia Latina. "Hanging at a torture stake" is an inaccurate (and misleading) description, as pointed out on the Talk page. I wonder if the misleading character of the description, and perhaps even of the assembly itself, is reason enough to delete it. Perhaps not. But it should at least be renamed, moved to a less misleading title. Theodoxa (talk) 17:41, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

Nothing in Commons:Deletion policy seems to support deletion. It's in use on two different projects, so deletion on Commons:Project scope grounds is pretty much out of the question. Editing the description would seem to be a better solution. As for renaming, feel free to suggest a better name. Instructions are at Commons:File renaming. Forgot one image

I'm searching for one Commons image I've seen last year. It's a photo of a standing young girl (between 18 and 28) looking at viewer at three-quarter length (roughly to her knee level) in transparent stockings in a bar or club-like setting somewhere in Germany. The girl is slightly smiling and is holding some kind of booklet or sheets. The prevalent colors on photo are brown, chestnut and black. The filename and the file description were in German, possibly with English translation. I've already checked categories like 21st-century portrait photographs of women at three-quarter length, Photographs of women in Germany, Photos of people in stockings, Women looking at viewer, but with no result. I had a strong impression of having it on my Wikipedia talkpage, but didn't find it there either. Could someone help to pinpoint? Thanks in advance. Brandmeister (talk) 23:28, 17 March 2015 (UTC)

The file appears to already have been moved. Try clicking on the link "purge the server's cache" on the destination page. UploadWizard problem

I just uploaded 33 pictures I had taken at a French Cabaret Show in Helsinki, Finland in last December, after getting permission from the casino staff. Since there were so many, I used UploadWizard instead of the old upload form I normally use. UploadWizard failed to show me a thumbnail of any of the pictures, so I added the descriptions and categories going by the order they appeared in on the directory where I uploaded them from. However, UploadWizard didn't upload them in this order, causing most of the descriptions and categories to go all wrong. I had to fix them by hand. Why didn't UploadWizard upload the images in the order they appeared in when I selected them? Why couldn't UploadWizard show me thumbnails? The pictures themselves seem to have uploaded OK. And if this happens, is there any easier way to solve it than what I did now? JIP (talk) 19:53, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

 • Commons only hosts media that are either freely licenced or in the public domain (PD). You would have to check that the photos from the book are either released under a free licence or PD in Kuwait and the US. When was the book published, and what countries was it published in? Adding a file

So,there is this picture in sq.wikipedia.org and according to the licensing,it is in the public domain, but it does not exist in commons.wikimedia.org.My question is this,am I allowed to upload that picture from wikipedia to wikimedia and license it as in the public domain? Here is the file,

How do I know if a file can be used under these fair-use provisions, because it is quite difficult to gain copyright permission from a dead holder.

 • You'd need permission from their heir(s). And, for what it's worth, typically you can't get permission to release someone else's copyrighted work. Most people's work is not available for reuse. - Jmabel ! talk 21:46, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

File from ruwiki

I transferred File:Onexim logo.gif from ruwiki to here because it had a PD tag on ruwiki. After I transferred it, it says it may be eligible for speedy deletion because it says it's a fair use file, but the tags say it's public domain. Did I do something wrong in the transfer of should it be deleted? --AmaryllisGardener talk 16:11, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

Update: Taivo removed a Russian tag that oddly meant "fair use". I guess the problem's solved. Thank you Taivo, I thought I looked at the tags. --AmaryllisGardener talk 16:21, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

Freedom to Contribute to the Public?

My contributions have been deleted based on a claim that original work can not be submitted, but the Wikimedia page that displays before uploading a file clearly states that I am allowed to submit my own original work. If there was any other reason for deleting my contributions, I may be able to understand the reason, but again, the reason provided is not an acceptable justification, because I am within the guidelines.

I've attempted reload my files, but now I get an error saying that a similar document has been deleted in the past. The files that I'm attempting to upload are for educational purposes. They were uploaded to be available for public use, but I suspect that the request to delete my contributions came from someone hoping to steal the material and hide the evidence.

I have found Wikipedia contributions that could be considered cyber bullying or something closer to a gossip column, and the last time I checked, these were not deleted. I don't understand why there is such a barrier to share academic work online, and no barrier to share non-sense or vulgarity. — Preceding unsigned comment added by John Leach (talk • contribs)

Wikimedia Commons is not a project for your text contributions. See Commons:Project_scope#Excluded_educational_content. --Martin H. (talk) 01:26, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

Uploading photos from my company' website

I have created an article about proprietary technology of our company and would like to upload photos from our company's website. What do I need to do to be able to upload these photos? prefix:Commons:Help desk/Archive — Preceding unsigned comment added by Reallmino (talk • contribs)

 • Unless the photos on the website are accompanied by free licence tags (which I suspect they aren't), you should follow the procedures at COM:OTRS and send permissions through. However, please make sure that this is done by someone who has the authority within your business to release IP under a free licence. Also, if editing on a project like English Wikipedia it is probably good to keep en:WP:COI in mind (although that doesn't matter at Commons). ColonialGrid (talk) 14:59, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

What to do with this image?

I found this image in the category Category:Lobster dishes. It used to show some kind of lobster dish, but then someone uploaded a new image over it, showing two guitar cases, with the comment "Filipino folk singer". Now the original description and the categorisation are all wrong, and possibly the EXIF metadata too. The image isn't used anywhere. What can I do to clear this confusion? JIP (talk) 13:12, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

Reverted and moved to File:Lobster dish.jpg. Regards, Yann (talk) 13:56, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

Correct category for cabaret

I recently uploaded 33 pictures of a cabaret show after getting permission from the organisers. I'd like to move them to a country-specific category under Category:Cabaret. But should I move them to Category:Cabarets in France (because the performers were French) or Category:Cabarets in Finland (which doesn't exist yet) (because the show was located in Finland)? Annotations are not visible

This image has annotations, but they are not visible: File:Cornelis_van_Haarlem_-_De_zondeval.jpg. --Bensin (talk) 12:15, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

Seems like the same problem was fixed once before, and then someone changed the resolution of the image again without adjusting the annotations. LX (talk, contribs) 12:29, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
OK. Thank you for clarifing. I removed the annotations and re-added them. --Bensin (talk) 18:06, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

creating a new page

Hi, I am pretty new here as I have only been reviewing texts in Ligure (Ligurian language) so far. Now I want to start creating new pages for the first time, so my question is: if I take a page as an example (for instance in Italian) and consider it valid to make something similar in Ligurian/Genoese, may I copy pictures from the corresponding Italian page? May I copy the basic structure usually on the right indicating flag, nationality, inhabitants etc. ? Thanks in advance for your reply. Did you mean to post this on a Wikipedia project? It sounds like what you are describing are Wikipedia articles with info boxes. Since Commons is all about collecting and organising media files (photos, diagrams, videos, audio recordings etc.), we don't really have that here. LX (talk, contribs) 17:47, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

Creating a Wikipedia file

I am trying to create & build a Wikipedia file that contains both text and a photo. How do I upload those? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Coltgrabber (talk • contribs) 20:58, 23 March 2015‎ (UTC)

It looks like you already figured out how to upload photos. Text content is generally outside the project scope of Wikimedia Commons (this site). For information on how to create articles on Wikipedia, see en:Wikipedia:Your first article over on English Wikipedia (or follow the language links on that page to corresponding pages on whichever language edition of Wikipedia you prefer). Create an article about a book

I have permission from an author to create an article about his book with his sources.

How do I go about this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Carrieolus (talk • contribs)

@Carrieolus: Hi,
1. You are here on Wikimedia Commons, which is project for hosting multimedia files. Articles belong to Wikipedia. I suppose you mean an article in English language, so it belongs to here.
2. You don't really need a permission from the author to write an article about a book, only to host documents which are not your own (book covers, etc.). You first need to ensure that the book meets the requirements of notability. See en:Wikipedia:Notability (books). Regards, Yann (talk) 08:54, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

Flagging pictures for searches

I run a poetry wiki of my own, where I use a lot of Commons files (and, in return, have uploaded a few here in return). I'm now starting to add the licensing information to the photos on my wiki. Tonight, in Commons, 2 of them did not come up in the search engine: poets John Thompson and William Irwin Thompson.

I was able to access both by going back to my wiki and using the link to the Commons file in the credit; but that wouldn't help someone else looking for either one. So I'm wondering if there's a way I can flag pages like that so that they'll show up better in searches. I know how to add new categories, but I don't know if it's considered OK or frowned on to add people's names as categories. If that's OK, I'll go ahead and do it; if not, though, is there something else I should do instead? 173.35.20.21 01:59, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

You can certainly create categories; just make sure to categorize them in turn with appropriate parents, because ‘orphan’ cats can’t be found by navigating the tree. For people, there are usually at least parent cats by location/citizenship, birthdate, and profession; have a browse through the relevant areas to find the most specific available. Otherwise, though, the search engine can usually find text in the description page, which you are also free to edit or expand. Could you provide links to the files that you couldn’t find with the search engine? If the string was anywhere on the file page, the pictures should have turned up; perhaps there’s an anomaly in the names or templates that should be fixed—if it wasn‘t just a server or browser hiccup … I also notice we already do have the category William Irwin Thompson, albeit containing just one photo.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 03:29, 23 March 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for the comprehensive reply, Odysseus. I can use the existing categories the files are in - Poets from Canada and Poets from the United States, and any others - as the parents. Should I delete those from the file pages at the same time?
I did a second search for the files, and found the William Irwin Thompson photo (which is the one I was searching for - perhaps I misspelled), so I'll leave it alone. The other one, for John Thompson, is https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Johnthompson1971.jpg - I think the problem may be that his name is written as one word - that's the type of situation I was worried about. George Dance (talk) 00:14, 24 March 2015 (UTC)
Yes, @George Dance, when files (or cats) are categorized, any categories they now ‘inherit‘ from further up the tree should generally be removed; see COM:OVERCAT.
Regarding the “John Thompson” search, I think the problem is that it’s such a common name. The photo did turn up when I tried, because the name is normally spaced in the description—but buried among more than a thousand other hits. Having read the page, when I searched for “John Thompson marsh” it came right to the top; even “Thompson marsh“ put it in the first 20-file page of results. Had the description read something like “John Thompson, Canadian poet, …“ it would have been equally easy to find with a keyword—still, categorization is better. If you do make a cat for him, it should be disambiguated with a name like John Thompson (poet), or perhaps a middle name or initial (if he used one).—Odysseus1479 (talk) 03:00, 24 March 2015 (UTC)
Thank you. You've been very patient as well as very helpful. George Dance (talk) 01:02, 25 March 2015 (UTC)
@George Dance: you write that you are starting to add the licensing information to the photos on your wiki. That sounds like you are downloading files from Commmons and then upload to your own wiki locally? If your wiki runs on the Mediawiki software, you may want to have a look at mw:InstantCommons, which enables you to link to any file from Commons directly without the need to manually copy the file and it's licensing information etc. --El Grafo (talk) 11:14, 24 March 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for the information and the link. I'll take a look. George Dance (talk) 01:02, 25 March 2015 (UTC)

Commons Glossary

Greetings: I was asked if Commons has a glossary of terms and abbreviations all in one place, similar to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:List_of_shortcuts or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Glossary . I searched, but was unable to find them on a list like that here on Commons to answer the user on my talk page. Please help? Ellin Beltz (talk) 17:53, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

Our version of en:Wikipedia:List of shortcuts would be Commons:Shortcuts. It's probably incomplete, so you might want to have a look at pages that transclude shortcut[6] or shortcut2[7]. I don't know if we have a glossary, but we probably don't use quite as much jargon as on English Wikipedia. Some of it might be spillover from there, though, so their list is probably a good place to start. LX (talk, contribs) 20:24, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

Copyright status of government maps made in Taiwan and Japan

I understand that photos and maps made in the United States by government officials as part of their duties are public domain. Does that also apply to other governments? I have some maps made in the 1970's by the government of Taiwan and the government of Japan. Do you think that they are public domain?CurtisNaito (talk) 16:38, 25 March 2015 (UTC)

The answer is no, works produced by governments are usually copyrighted like any other works. USA and some other countries are exceptions. See Commons:Copyright_rules_by_territory. Ruslik (talk) 18:59, 25 March 2015 (UTC)

Upload of already removed pictures, + license problems

Hello, I try upload of pictures ("Sophie Schneider" ) which were removed due to license problems a) I do not understand how to handle the license problem: the paintings are private property of our family, we are the descendants of the painter Sophie Schneider (deceased 1942) , there is no last will of her b) how can I upload the pictures ("Sophie Schneider" ) which before were removed due to license problems ?

Thanks ! H J Schneider — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ch12hs (talk • contribs)

The admins tried to tell you what the problem is on your talk page, and I can't say what it was, because the files are now "deleted"—actually hidden, we can't see the images, but admins and license reviewers can check it. 1942+70=2012 might be old enough for some mix of PD-heirs and PD-old-70, what did you try? Based on de:Sophie Schneider the 1942 should be clear, but better ask Jarekt or Motopark if that's enough for an UNDELetion request—if yes they'd presumably simply do it, the "request" business is for potentially controversial undeletions. If something else is unclear, a separate OTRS PERMISSION from you might be required. –Be..anyone (talk) 08:18, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
I undeleted the files and added PD-old-70 and Artwork. H J Schneider can you add more of a description to each of the files? --Jarekt (talk) 13:19, 26 March 2015 (UTC)

Question about categories

I have noticed some categories that are in categories and then also in one or more subcategories and I was wondering if that was by design, or if that is just something that needs to be cleaned up. For example, Category:People by name by gender falls into categories Category:People categories by name and Category:People by name. Category:People categories by name already falls under Category:People by name though, so it seems unnecessarily redundant. From my Wikipedia days I know they tried to avoid the double categorization issue as described above but I know some things here are different than there so I wanted to ask. Reguyla (talk) 20:01, 26 March 2015 (UTC)

There's a similar rule here near COM:OVERCAT, with a diagram. If you stumble over very simple cases see COM:REDCAT, you can fix minor oddities. Or if it's not your bold day start a CFD (category for discussion), that's also a good procedure if you're not sure, or if you expect controversies, or if you plan huge changes. –Be..anyone (talk) 00:38, 27 March 2015 (UTC)

Better quality photo

Hi there. I frequently find old, yellow photos online and add them to articles. These old photos almost always need a bit of tweaking to remove the yellow and correct the contrast, and none of the photos I've done this too are particularly noteworthy, and are by unknown photographers. Typically, I'll add the original photo, then add the tweaked photo as a "new version". I know this isn't done with old photos where either the photo or the photographer was noteworthy, such as old Library of Congress photos. I'm asking because this photo is of poor quality and would benefit from a tweak, but the photographer was noteworthy, so I don't want to mess with the integrity of the photo. I've sometimes seen an "other version" attached to a photo page, but I've never tried doing this. The photo is displayed on the Hull, Quebec article, and it would be nice to display it in better quality. Thanks for your advice. Magnolia677 (talk) 14:35, 28 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi. Depends what type of tweak you have in mind. We often need to tweak Poirier's images a little, as the BAnQ copies tend to be a bit low on contrast or have black spots, etc. Actually, adjustments can be done before the first upload. With Poirier's photos, there's no need to have bad versions besides the good versions. So, IMO it's better to use the "new version" approach. Unless you want to crop this image, in which case it should be the "other version" approach, so we can also have the full image of this city view. Also, it is generally better to start directly with the larger version available on the BAnQ website. In this case, it is this image, and we can see that the current Commons version is slightly smaller than the original. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:04, 28 March 2015 (UTC)

Health in... / Healthcare in...

Since March 2013 is this question in discussion:

Commons:Categories for discussion/2013/03/Category:Healthcare in Armenia

However to date there is no satisfying answer to the question: which images should set in category "Heath in..." and which in "Healthcare in...". On this point it seems to exist a pretty confusion in the single country-categories. Can we find a closing solution? --Katharinaiv (talk) 18:16, 28 March 2015 (UTC)

Yesterday I closed a set of related CFDs redirected to one page as inconclusive: No contributions for about 1.25 years despite of the CFD-spamnote in all affected categories. Your case is worse, more categories based on a total FAIL for the separate Afghanistan test: Somebody started a CFD, there was no discussion (happens), the nominator closed their own CFD as merge, but never executed the decision. That's rubbish. And in your example there really was a discussion best described as no consensus to do something, also no consensus to do nothing. So what exactly do you want, would an explanation how to close this failed CFD help? –Be..anyone (talk) 20:03, 28 March 2015 (UTC)

Dear Sir,

A friend asks me to assist him to upload a picture on Commons and he consulted his lawyer who advised to do it as "his own work" under the licence BY-NC-ND. Would that work out?

The Lawyer's words: "It is enough to indicate that the photography is issued under the Creative Commons BY-NC-ND (Attribution (paternité in French) - No use commercially No change) and that you are the author of this photograph.
