Goodies, tips, and tricks Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities. You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads. Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~. To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg. You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account. There are several tools to upload files. Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful. Made a mistake? Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it. Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Uploads / Requesting a bot-assisted batch upload

Thank you for all the uploads! However, I noticed you were using the basic information template and the nonspecific USGOV license (instead of {{PD-USGov-NIST}}). If you use the {{Artwork}} template for your uploads (which usually means using the basic or original upload form to bypass the automatic information template), you can add more information and so that the image can be found and utilized more easily.

You might even choose to request a semi-automatic batch upload at Commons:Batch uploading with the note that each upload should get a template such as this.

For example, I changed the description page of one of the images you uploaded to this:

Thank you so much. This looks like it would really help us. We're entirely new Wikimedia Commons users, so we've been trying to figure this out as we go. Did you move the file's title to the description field instead? We've run into the problem of not all of our historical photos having a description field, and I wasn't sure if it would be appropriate to repeat the title. --NISTResearchLibrary (talk) 21:45, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

First, the talkback was correct. It's just a friendly way to remind people to look. As for the image, I cheated and found the photo on your website, though I know not all are there and not the same resolution. It's where I found the description as well. If the title is descriptive, repeating it is more than okay.

If you have many images to upload, you can request a bot-assist as I noted above. Then you create metadata, a spreadsheet with the file name and all the fields already filled with new files each having their own line. Then the files are batch uploaded with that information. Another option is to use a tool at Commons:Upload tools if you aren't already. It makes it a faster process and you can use your custom template similar to what I did above. We're using the .Commonist tool already, actually, uploading our photos by collection, but there are nowhere near the number of fields there for us to populate as in the example that you gave above. I've proposed to our management that we use the bot-assist, but since we already have a process in place using .Commonist, if we can edit that so that we're fulfilling all the Wikimedia requirements, that would be optimal, especially since we'll be adding future collections in smaller numbers. Do we need to have all of the fields you posted in your example? Unfortunately I can't change the credit line statement. Do you happen to know how the bot-assist obtains the files to be uploaded? First, as long as you fill the description, author, source, and permission/license fields correctly, you are more than fine by Wikimedia standards. Please don't worry about that.

It's just that using the above template is the next step, but it's surely not required. Maybe there could be a user effort to further edit the uploads. I'm not sure. I suggest asking at Commons:HD to get more opinions. The consensus may be to do nothing beyond correct information in the Commonist. Or perhaps they might do a NIST day/week for users to "clean" up the uploads by further categorizing and editing the templates.
