Statue Desiderius Erasmus

is filled with photos of one of several statues of the humanist Desiderius Erasmus. There are at least three different statues of the scholar in Rotterdam. I would like to create a category for just this single (bronze and oldest) statue of him. But I'm pondering on the name for such a category. either or ? Or as the number is an official number given by Dutch authorities to state monuments? Or a different way? Kind regards, Timelezz (talk) 11:53, 5 May 2014 (UTC)

For a new category, it doesn't make much difference whether you have brackets or not but a number is not going to be memorable. Put a note in the category page about the number using the specific template like this 32784.
By the way are you referring to the two images you uploaded? If so, do you know that the description suggests the statue is made of polysterene? Green Giant supports NonFreeWiki (talk) 12:32, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks! Yes, these two images are of statue of Erasmus, made of polystyrene, located in Rotterdam. It is not the same one as the bronze one in the center of Rotterdam. Hence, my attempt for disambiguation. Kind regards Timelezz (talk) 13:21, 5 May 2014 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:ČSAD logo.svg

--Walta (talk) 20:12, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

Category Refused

I tried asking this question at Teahouse on Wikipedia. Below is a copy of the subsequent exchanges.

I have been adding some more images of Supermarine S.6 to Commons. When I got to adding Categories it would not accept Supermarine S.6 if I typed it, but would if I copied and pasted from https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Supermarine_S.6 . I checked for my typos several times. Is the problem with me or elsewhere? SovalValtos (talk) 12:16, 28 April 2014 (UTC) @SovalValtos: Hey SovalValtos. Were you possibly typing Category:Supermarine_S.6 (with the underscore, as appears in the URL), rather than Category:Supermarine S.6?--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:24, 28 April 2014 (UTC) No. I was typing solely Supermarine S.6

Which tool were you using? HotCat or Cat-a-lot? -- Rillke(q?) 05:34, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
I do not know. I was using the Upload Wizard on Wikimedia Commons. At step 4, "Describe" , when using the Category box, typing "Supermarine S.6 " produced the response, "This Category is not in use yet", whereas if I copied and pasted the same wording "Supermarine S.6" from the actual category page, it was accepted. SovalValtos (talk) 06:37, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

Error with uploading

When I upload with Internet Explorer using UploadWizard the file name of the first file gets automatically the name of the last file. If you don't change that, the first image will be automatically overwritten with the other image. This happened for instance here, and here. I assume you mean this logo. It is definitely complex enough to be eligible for copyright, and therefore (under the Berne Convention) it's considered automatically copyrighted. So, yes, if you want this on Commons you'd need to go through the process at COM:OTRS but it's not very likely that you will be able to get permission. If you just want to use it on the English-language Wikipedia, you might look into uploading it there (rather than Commons) and using en:Template:Non-free_use_rationale. - Jmabel ! talk 17:09, 3 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi, wiki people

1. I need to DELETE all my files which I uploaded yesterday (I have not uploaded any before).

2. Then, I will replace it with an eBook to share with all in this world. They are all my work.

3. Please advise how to do item (1) and where to upload item (2). Is there an ebook wiki that I can upload into?

Thank you.

Hello Matthew. I hope this helps:
  • If you uploaded an image within the last seven days, you can request deletion by adding G7 - uploader request to the file page.
  • There are three possibilities for where to upload but it depends entirely on what the material is.
    • If your texts have been previously published, then probably the best place is Wikisource.
    • If these texts are intended as instructional material, then they could probably be uploaded to Wikibooks.
    • Alternatively you could try Wikiversity.
Some of your texts seem to have been co-authored. Are your co-authors aware of these uploads? Green Giant supports NonFreeWiki (talk) 18:52, 3 May 2014 (UTC)

Town Flag

The town of Northfield, MA (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northfield,_Massachusetts) has recently decided on a town flag and as there exist no digital copies of it yet, I scanned the town annual report which includes a copy of the flag and wish to upload it to the commons and include it in the page on Northfield. Is this within acceptable use? - — Preceding unsigned comment added by FelixMaxwell (talk • contribs)

  • Unless it is so simple as to be ineligible for copyright, or is for some reason in the public domain, you cannot scan someone else's work and upload it here, regardless of whether that someone else is an individual or an institution. One possibility is to go through the COM:OTRS process, if the town is willing to free-license the flag. Another possibility would be that if there is a textual description of the flag in an ordinance or law, ordinances or laws generally cannot be copyrighted, so you can do your own drawing (ideally an SVN file) based on that textual description and upload that as your own work. - Jmabel ! talk 01:54, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
  • In addition to the routes outlined by Jmabel, there are two other possible routes:
  • If the town puts a copy of the flag on the town website, with a w:Creative Commons license such as CC-BY-SA 3.0, this would enable you to upload it to Commons immediately, as long as you fill out the details such as the source of the image i.e. the town website.
  • If all else fails and it is a copyright issue, you could upload the image to English Wikipedia in a reduced size (maybe no more than 100,000 pixels), and use Template:Symbol rationale. It could be justifiable on fair-use basis, similar to other flags hosted there (see this category). However this should be viewed as a last resort and ideally the image would be released for free use. Green Giant supports NonFreeWiki (talk) 02:51, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Preferences?

I am not sure whether this is the right place to ask. However, I try it. Whenever I am editing a page, I get the information

"By clicking the "Save Page" button, you agree to the Terms of Use, and you irrevocably agree to release your contribution under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license and the GFDL. You agree that a hyperlink or URL is sufficient attribution under the Creative Commons license."

This is very boring, I do not want to read it hundreds of time each day, and it forces me every time to scroll to reach the buttons. How can I get rid of it? I was not able to find out how. sarang사랑 07:52, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Public Domain USA Images

Dear Mr./Mrs.

My name is Wesley Vargas, and I'm the International Marketing Analyst at CBC - Companhia Brasileira de Cartuchos, which belongs the CBC Group (CBC(Brazil), Magtech(USA), Men(Germany) and Sellier&Bellot(Czech Republic). We are a ammunition production group and CBC is now working on a new catalogue. We could find many proper images in here and basically all of them came from the USA military department. I imediatelly got to see the licensing and also the commons codes and they were labeled as "public domain". By "public domain" I understand that we can use them freely. We also got to talk to our law department and they had the same answer, but advised us to get in contact with Wikimedia in order to have a proper answer.

I just want to make sure you understand how important it is for us here. And how necessary the answer is.

Thank you very much, I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Best regards --Mktcbc (talk) 12:14, 6 May 2014 (UTC)Wesley Vargas - CBC International Marketing

Do whatever your law department says was OK. Why would you even consider relying on answers given by random strangers on the Internet, who in all likelihood are not copyright lawyers either?? We can't give you legal advice. Lupo 12:20, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Bell and Pavilion

Would I be allowed to upload an image of a bell and pavilion that were recently created? My assumption is that I can't, but I just wanted to check first. --Jpcase (talk) 22:19, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Hello Jpcase and thank you for asking before uploading. The basic question you have to answer is → who created the image? If it was you, then of course you are free to upload it but you have to do so using any of the free licenses accepted by Commons. If it was created by someone else, you will need their permission and you would have to provide Commons with definitive proof of such permission. Green Giant (talk) 23:32, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
Its eligibility will also depend on the country it’s from: see Commons:FOP. In the USA, the pavilion would probably be treated as a building (rather than, say, a sculpture), so photos of it would be exempt from copyright protection and therefore acceptable here.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 03:54, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

Okay to use font?

Is it okay to upload an image with this font as a free equivalent to (File:Miley Cyrus logo.png), since the author states it is "100% free". I'm planning to credit the author, but I'm wondering whether or not the font would even be considered in the "public domain". Moonchïld9 (talk) 02:22, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

(Section moved to bottom of page)

What do you mean by “a free equivalent”? The image we have is already pretty free, as its design is considered too simple to copyright. But if you want to recreate the logotype as vector artwork (i.e. in SVG format), that could be useful. The linked font is rather on the light side; if you happen to have Century Gothic AKA Tw Cen MT—it’s pretty widely available, being distributed with various Microsoft products—I think its Bold weight would be a better match. (Assuming the PNG is correct, that is: I haven’t seen the logo ‘in the wild‘ myself.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 02:59, 7 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. By free equivalent, I meant one that could be edited/remixed, since I wasn't 100% sure non-copyright restrictions (such as Author's moral) would allow for that. I will look into the svg format, however. Thanks for the suggestion! : ) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Moonchïld9 (talk • contribs) 03:41, 7 May 2014‎ (UTC)
Just to clarify, typeface designs aren‘t generally subject to copyright, and whatever you produce with them is considered your own work (whether it’s creative, original ‘art‘ or just technical ‘craft’). The only intellectual property that’s usually protected is font software; as long as you have a licence to install and use a font, you’re free to do what you like with the graphics or other documents you create with its glyphs.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 04:23, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

I do not want to bore with SVG details, but that is the job the guys at Commons:Graphic Lab/Map workshop do. If you like it, I will add some more details like names of places or the names of the British and French commanders. --Maxxl2 - talk 07:48, 7 May 2014 (UTC
It's excellent but I would amend British Army to BEF. (or B. E. F. or B.E.F.), Fifth French Army to Fifth Army (the BEF is the exception) and replace Joffre (C-in-C) with Lanrezac (the army commander). There's a convention that German armies are numbered (1st Army) and opposing armies are written (Fifth Army). If you want to label the armies, I'd add a key for the colour code and dispense with the national label for each army. I think I might add a line for the frontiers too. There's always a reason to add detail but obviously this reduces clarity so a balance has to be struck. Topography is already there and perhaps main roads railway lines are worth considering. --16amira (talk) 06:10, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

  • I'm a bit confused who you mean by "the artist". The relevant copyright here would be the photographer's. See COM:OTRS for how to pass along the photographer's permission. Also, it is necessary for the copyright holder to provide a specific license, which you have not done here. - Jmabel ! talk 15:40, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

Correct form of providing source information on an uploaded photograph

Can anyone give me guidance on the following point? If I photograph a painting or museum exhibit and state "own work" as the source, it has been pointed out to me in the past that I am not the author of the subject shown, so cannot claim it as my own work. In the case of paintings, however, if I give the artist's name as the source, it can look like I have pirated the image from a publication rather than it being the result of me photographing it. I wonder if "photographed by uploader" gets round the difficulty (as the uploader can be identified further down the page), or whether that just confuses the issue? Can anyone tell me the correct procedure I should adopt? Kim Traynor (talk) 13:49, 5 May 2014 (UTC)

It is acceptable to use your own wording to describe clearly the situation and avoid confusion. But, whenever possible, it is even better and recommended to use the templates specially adapted to the situation, such as Template:Artwork or Template:Art Photo and fill them with as much relevant information as possible. Those templates allow easy distinction of the informations about the artwork and those about the photograph. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:19, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
If you really don't want to use the templates, please at least mention the author, the date and the copyright status of the artwork in the US and in its country of origin. It should be made easy to understand for the readers. But anyway at some point someone may format and complete the informations with the specific templates and they may contact you for details if something is unclear. So, as you are the person who knows the information, it would probably help if you format it from the start. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:50, 5 May 2014 (UTC)

2) The English translation of this project's pages seems to be a weak point, and it would be really great if you could help to improve it - it's a Wiki! Therefore I asked for the import, because often users only fix mistakes in their home wiki. (It would be so great to have this project in better English before the Wikimania 2014 starts in August.)
3) If you have more questions concerning the internationalisation status of the tools, please post your questions at de:Wikipedia Diskussion:Persönliche Bekanntschaften – the tool gurus Ireas, Wiegels and Euku are good in English. The project started more than 5 years ago on the German Wikipedia as there existed a need for this. In the last year time this project gained interested from Dutch users, French users, Belgian users, Catalonian users and Italian users to use this tool, and I helped implement this on the various Wikipedia's to enable easy access and navigation. I helped with the implementation on the English Wikipedia, but it seems not much participants from the English speaking parts are adopting it yet. The key of the tool is that users have met each other, know at least three users who are already confirmed in this system and only then they can take part.
I implemented the tool on the request of local users, but everyone can translate it into their own language at translatewiki. If anyone needs help with translating or would like to request an implementation on a certain Wikipedia, I am willing to help with that. What I would like is that, if communities are interested, they can export this tool with Wikimania to their own country/area where they live. Maybe it would be could if someone could give a presentation about it? Romaine (talk) 23:28, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

Journal Article - Author has given permission to use an image

I have gotten informal permission by email from the author of a journal article to use a particular image from that article in Wikipedia. I am not at all familiar with this process. Can someone step me through the procedure to formalize this? I would like to make it as painless as possible for the author, doing as much of the paperwork as possible myself. Thanks PAR (talk) 14:26, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

Hello,
There is no procedure to formalize this, because a permission given to you and restricted to a "permission to use in Wikipedia" is not a license for free reuse anywhere by anybody, which is the type of license required on the Wikimedia websites. However, if you explain that clearly to the author and if you convince him to release the image under a free license allowing reuse anywhere by anybody, then he can formalize it by sending a mail to Wikimedia. It can be based on the example given on the page Commons:Email templates, making the adaptations for the image. It goes without saying that the license must be given by the copyright owner of the image, not by the author of the text of the article if they are different persons. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:27, 8 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the pointers. I could make my own diagram, using different colors, different fonts, etc. Would this be a simpler solution to the problem? PAR (talk) 03:11, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
There's not really an answer to this, without knowing what the image is, if it's actually copyrighted, what your "own diagram" would be, and if it would copy the copyrighted work of someone else. If the image is original enough to be copyrighted, then you can't copy it, and only changing colors and fonts will not help. Can the article be viewed on the web, by any chance? -- Asclepias (talk) 03:45, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
Yes, the article is freely available at http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2013/08/28/1306246110.full.pdf+html and the diagram I am talking about is Fig. 2 on the third page. I emailed Dr. Plotkin asking for permission to use the diagram, and he replied that I certainly could. PAR (talk) 07:14, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
You can use it, but you can't go beyond that permission and offer it under a free license to the world on Wikimedia. So, if the basic design of the image (not only the particular colouring or other details) is a work creative enough to be copyrighted, then the author himself must offer explicitly a free license on his image, if you want to upload it, or a modified version of it, to Wikimedia under a free license. From what you said, the author sounds open, and maybe you can convince him to offer the image under a free license. Be sure you read and follow the procedure at Commons:OTRS so you know exactly what to request from the author. You can also wait for other suggestions or comments from users here. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:10, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

Help me please

I don't know who put together the page about me. I didn't ask for it. However, the picture used is so old it's laughable and no one asked my permission to use it. Am I permitted to delete that and at least be allowed to upload a current photo. Can I receive the steps to achieve that too please because I can't seem to work it out. Thanks for any help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fmc (talk • contribs)

Hope you are talking about this. It was published by Catriona Sparks with a CC BY 2.0 license; so any one can use it without your permission as far as such uses will not affect your publicity/privacy rights.
If you provide a better picture, chances that we (the editors of the article in the relevant Wikipedias) replace it with the new one in the articles. And there may be some chances that the current picture being deleted out of courtesy. But remember, we can't delete it from Flickr, and any one can use it as it has an irrevocable free license. Jee 05:22, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
Do remember that the photographer, not you, would be the copyright holder of the new photo. Make sure that the new photo is either uploaded by the photographer or, if you upload it yourself, that you provide clear permission from the photographer via COM:OTRS. - Jmabel ! talk 15:50, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi, I am not sure about the usage of this logo. For the English Wikipedia there exists a file with the logo but it cannot be used for other Wikipedia projects/other languages. Please see the talk page of en:File:UoE-Business-School-logo.png Therefore I uploaded this one to link it with the mentioned pages. I hope that this is in accordance with the Wikipedia rules. Thank you.

--Frodo013 (talk) 11:29, 17 May 2014 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons (this site) is a repository of free, educational media files used by the several hundred different language editions of Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, and others. The free part is very important – it's a founding principle of Commons that we should only host content that can be used by anyone for any purpose. en:File:UoE-Business-School-logo.png is clearly marked as a non-free logo appearing on English Wikipedia under fair use provisions, but "fair use" media files are not allowed on Commons. Please read Commons:Project scope/Summary to understand what this project is all about before attempting to upload anything else. LX (talk, contribs) 13:36, 17 May 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for your answer. How can the non-free logo appearing on English Wikipedia be linked to other pages in other languages? --Frodo013 (talk) 13:57, 17 May 2014 (UTC)
You can't use locally hosted files on other projects. You may upload it locally to those projects that have rules similar to English Wikipedia. LX (talk, contribs) 15:09, 17 May 2014 (UTC)

Location (Longitude/Latitude) Field

This topic has come up previously. I have seen some of the archive. It is a sufficiently serious problem to put people off attempting uploads. The field is required to be entered as a decimal, but as soon as the file is saved the field is converted to another format! Hence it is not possible to copy and paste values from another uploaders file. One wants to give the field the appropriate number of significant figures. Please can the Upload Wizard be changed? SovalValtos (talk) 17:27, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

The Upload Wizard only accepts decimal coordinates, and it's unlikely that anyone reading this can change that. The Location template that the Upload Wizard generates can use either decimal or DMS notation as input (see the template's documentation) but always presents DMS coordinates for consistency. If you click on the coordinates on a file description page, you will see both notations at the top of the resulting page. LX (talk, contribs) 12:03, 10 May 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for showing me where to find a simple source of the decimal coordinates from a file description page. I do not know the difference between the Upload Wizard and 'The Location template that the Upload Wizard generates' which 'can use either decimal or DMS notation as input'. In fact I would not know how to find the template , unless the template is what presents itself during an upload. The documentation I have no idea as how to find at all. It just seems weird that copy and paste of DMS in a file is not allowed. 86.179.114.189 10:16, 11 May 2014 (UTC) This was me SovalValtos (talk) 10:20, 11 May 2014 (UTC)

Hello,

I am sending you this message because I need your help. It is very difficult for common people like me to contribute to wikipedia: the terms of use for images are such a maze. I don't know what I am asked. Recently, I added two photos ( here they are ) at wikimedia commons. The thing is they come from the Audi media center, they are free of charge. I put the source, I know I have the right to use those photographs so what is the problem ? What should I do to solve the fact that those photos are not allowed ?

Thank you,

Best regards,

--Arouquense (talk) 11:35, 10 May 2014 (UTC)

See Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter#Press photos. These photos may be free of charge for editorial purposes, but Wikimedia Commons only hosts content that is free as in free speech – that is, they must be free to use for any purpose. Please do not upload copyrighted content to Commons unless the copyright holder has explicitly approved publication under a free license such as the Creative Commons Attribution license or the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike license. LX (talk, contribs) 11:50, 10 May 2014 (UTC)
The Audi website’s “Legal“ page says its content is “exclusively for use by journalists and employees of media companies as a source for their own media reporting and are not intended for commercial use,” much too narrow a licence for Commons, and moreover explicitly forbids sharing.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 19:27, 11 May 2014 (UTC)

Search Preferences -- please give us back the 500 results default option!

Hi there! Before the recent overhaul, I was able to specify search preferences as a wiki commons member. At the bottom of a search, you'll see something like this:

View (previous 50 | next 50) (20 | 50 | 100 | 250 | 500)

In preferences, I was able to select "500" as my default -- very useful when using wiki commons frequently. In fact this was my main reason for getting an account. I can't seem to find this preference under the new search preferences option, though there are new and less useful things like "File Talk" and "Modules" -- can anyone help?

It also would be great to be able to search public-domain only content.

thanks, Francesca Phrannest (talk) 04:14, 13 May 2014 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Daniel G. C. Wu.jpg

At the wikipedia meetup last Saturday, I consulted with a more experienced editor and uploaded for use in a new article on the English wikipedia, which has a fair use policy, an image from an episcopal church website. That image is used only once, for identification purposes. It is the only known image of Rev. Wu, who died in 1952, so no further images will be created (i.e. it meets criteria 10 of the acceptable fair use criteria). The image appears on several websites, including http://satucket.com/lectionary/daniel_wu.htm, http://liturgyandmusic.wordpress.com/2011/04/06/april-6-daniel-g-c-wu-priest-and-missionary-among-chinese-americans-1956/ and http://www.episcopalchurch.org/lectionary/daniel-g-c-wu-priest-and-missionary-among-chinese-americans-1956. It appears cut from a larger image which was a group photo taken in 1934, still online at http://anglicanhistory.org/usa/orientals1937.html. I mentioned the exact source in the automated upload wizard, but it now seems missing.

Your main error was to upload a "fair use" image to the Commons. We do not allow "fair use" images to be hosted here. Wait until it is deleted here, then re-upload it locally at the English Wikipedia if you must. Lupo 07:21, 13 May 2014 (UTC)

creating a bibliography page

I would like to create a bibliography page. I have written it and put it in the right format (I think!) but cannot find the instructions for uploading/insertion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lynn Abbassi (talk • contribs) 09:03, 13 May 2014‎ (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons (this site) is a repository of free, educational media files such as photographs, scanned images, diagrams, animations, audio and video clips. We generally don't host text-only content that can be represented using wiki markup that anyone can edit. A bibliography would most likely be outside our project scope. That type of content is more suitable for direct inclusion on one of the other Wikimedia projects (e.g. one of the Wikipedia editions). You may be looking for en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Bibliographies over at the English Wikipedia project. LX (talk, contribs) 10:24, 13 May 2014 (UTC)
Hello Lynn Abbassi. LX has pointed you to the right place, but just to note that although bibliographies mostly belong on Wikipedia, generally we include them as part of an article. If you want to create just a list of works on its own, then two particular guidelines to read are list notability and selection criteria. If you need more help, feel free to ask at the Wikipedia help desk. Green Giant (talk) 09:16, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

Are you trying to upload a raster image over an existing vector (SVG) graphic? That won’t work: use the proper filename extension for your image, creating a new file if necessary. You can use Template:Other to link it to the previous version. (And, if my guess was right, please consider using a drawing program to modify SVGs: it’s much easier to manipulate vectors than to paint, and the resulting SVG will be of better quality and more easily adaptable.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 07:16, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

Request for clarification

Please clarify whether in the course of this discussion have been met all the rules applicable in such circumstances. --Robsuper (talk) 08:42, 15 May 2014 (UTC)

The DR was probably a sufficient discussion, contributor created drawings remain a marginal discussion for project scope, and some do get deleted if shown to have no realistic educational value or appear to have been created with the intention of causing disruption to this project. Your concerns may be part of an interpretation of Commons:Photographs_of_identifiable_people#Moral_issues, however this is normally only considered to apply where an image reduces the dignity of an individual. Commons' scope does include the preservation of images that may be offensive to some groups, and may even be unlawful in some countries for this reason. -- (talk) 08:56, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for the clarification. However, the problem is more complex, strongly relates to the respect for knowledge. --Robsuper (talk) 09:20, 15 May 2014 (UTC)

  • How do I change the date? The tool that I used automatically chose a date for me.
  • What's a template? Do I just copy and paste "PD-Art" or "PD-Art"? What are the differences between PD-old-auto, PD-old-auto-1923, and PD-old-100?
  • Where do I find categories? Is there a search tool?
  • Is there an exemplar image page, with all the necessary descriptions, that I can use as an example for uploading paintings?

Recommended procedure for uploading derivative works of files from commons

I have created a cropped version of a CC-BY-SA-30 file File:Oryx gazella - Etosha 2014.jpg, which I would like to upload as a derivative work. What is the recommended method for doing that nowadays (I have had a long wikibreak)? I the "old days" I used DerivativeFX, which worked really well, but this tool appears to be obsolete (via the old upload form). I tried using the new upload form, but got a little confused regarding the question about if it is my own work. Well, the trivial manipulation I have done is evidently my own work, but based on a derivative of someone elses work, and it was not apparent for me how to proceed. May need some looking into

Hey, just giving you guys a head's up. The descriptions for these don't show it, but both File:Eduardo Balboa.jpg and File:Jessy Ramirez.JPG were uploaded to be used in relation to an AfC someone started about an urban legend. The photos say that they're his own work and they might be, but I figured I'd post here and ask if there's anything that would offhand show that they were taken from somewhere else. Part of what makes me think that he swiped them from somewhere else is that he likely took File:Dead Shoe unsolved legend.jpg from this website or from another place that has the photo and ran it through a filter. That one could probably go, but then I'm not aware if the original photo was fair use or if running the image through a filter would make a difference in copyright stuff. Tokyogirl79 (talk) 02:55, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

Running an image through a filter certainly does not free it from copyright—consider that even hand-copying from memory can only create a derivative work, let alone semi-automated processing of a file. As for the first two images, I don‘t see any obvious problem. (Respecting copyright or licensing, that is; they‘re poorly described and categorized, and as such are likely out of scope for this project.) Neither gets any external TinEye hits.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 04:16, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

Pictures from Russo-Japanese War 1904/05

Hello, I own an old book from 1907 which includes images from the Russo-Japanese War of1904/05. I would like to upload some of the images to Wikimedia Commons. How do I do this with using the right settings and permissions etc.?

I appreciate any help. Thanks a lot.

  • What country was the book published in? If it's the US, these can all be uploaded with PD-1923. Otherwise it may be more complicated, and would typically individual photographer's death dates would determine whether each image is in the public domain or not. - Jmabel ! talk 00:22, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
Hi Jmabel, it's published in the US. So how do I proceed ? Like this?
On Step 3 - Release Rights
I have to fill in:
a.) Source: Do I put in here the books title?
b.) Author: Do I put in here the publisher’s name
c.) Now tell us why you are …..
-> I guess I choose: „The copyright has definitely expired in the USA“
-> and then I choose „First published in the United States before 1923“
I just don't want to mess up when uploading files – thanks a lot for your help. --Chris.w.braun (talk) 01:01, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
1) Remember, it can always be fixed later. This is a wiki. Edits are easy. No crisis if it isn't perfect on upload.
2) Ideally, source would be book title, year, publisher, page, etc.: pretty much the way you would do a citation.
3) Author: Ideally the photographer of the individual image, if known (however the book credits it). If the book doesn't credit it "unknown photographer" is OK in a case like this. - Jmabel ! talk 04:44, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) Often a book will include a list of illustration credits, sometimes on a separate page from the plates or photos themselves, near the front or back. Failing that, the book’s details will do; be sure to include the publication date. (Template:Cite book is handy for auto-formatting.) I believe all this info, except the name of the photographer, if available, should go under “Source”.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 04:47, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
Hi,
I guess your question refers to a step through the "upload wizard" method. Although I never use that particular upload method, the result should be the same:
a) Source: yes, include the book reference. If you scanned the image from the book, then it could be: "Scanned from Book's title, author, publisher, place, year, page of this image". If the book mentions a primary source from where it obtained the image, please add that information too.
b) Author: the name of the author of this particular image (artist and/or photographer). Not the publisher of the book.
c) You reproduce the image, so the question is about the first publication of that image, which is not necessarily the same as the first publication of the book. Look what the book says about the publication history of the image. Does it specify that this book is the first publication of this image or does it mention a previous publication of the image before it was published in this book? If this book, or another U.S. publication, was the first publication of the image, then yes, the image was "first published in the United States before 1923". But if the image was previously published outside of the U.S., then although the copyright has expired in the U.S., other things also may have to be taken into consideration to determine the information required by Wikimedia Commons.
-- Asclepias (talk) 05:04, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
Guys, you are great. Thanks a lot – I'll try this out asap. Thanks again --Chris.w.braun (talk) 17:47, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
From your upload of one file today, I'm guessing that your 1907 book might be a reedition of the 1905 book A photographic record of the russo-japanese war. Seven photographers are listed at the beginning of that 1905 book, but the book does not seem to specify what photographs were taken by what photographers. The introduction includes some information in general terms, such as "practically all the photographs, with the exception of a very few of those depicting scenes in Russia and with the Russian forces, were taken originally and exclusively for Collier's", "a large number of these photographs (...) are published in this book for the first time" and "the greater portion of the Russian pictures were taken by Victor K. Bulla", that do not allow the reader to know the history of any particular photograph. If your 1907 book is not more specific, that could make your descriptive task difficult, but do for the best with what you have. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:12, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
Hi Asclepias, thank you very much for your detailed answer. First of all: I made a mistake when saying my book is from 1907. It's from 1904 – and yes: the photographs are published for the first time. As you suggested I updated the file I had uploaded yesterday. Under "Author" I wrote "unknown" as I can't really tell which of the photographer has taken the image. I'm open for suggesions if I should inlcude something like "One of the following photographer: list of names" – if that makes sense. Anyway, thanks again – I appreciate your help a lot, --Chris.w.braun (talk) 23:39, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
Perhaps it is this edition: The Russo-Japanese War A photographic and descriptive review of the great conflict in the far east, which has the year "MCMV" (1905) on the first page and "copyright 1904" on the second page. It looks like a previous edition to the other one linked above and it has a similar introduction. There's probably no ideal wording for the "author" field in a situation like this. By personal preference, I try to avoid saying that the author is "unknown" when it is likely that he was actually known, although the immediate source did not specify that information clearly. In the present case, I prefer your other solution (one of the following...). Many of those photographs might well be attributed to their respective photographers with more research and recoupement with other sources. That would be the best thing. I'm not saying that you should do that research yourself or now. Just go ahead and upload the files. The additional research can be done by other interested users later. Interesting information seems to exist about some of those photographers in available resources that can be explored. For example about en:Jimmy Hare, who followed the war with the Japanese troops, and about en:Viktor Bulla, who followed it with the Russian troops. Commons has a Category:Viktor Bulla. Photographs, from the same photographers who were correspondants for Collier's Weekly, were also published in other periodicals at the time of the war and the photographs are often attributed to their photographer. They're not necessarily the same photos as those in the book, after all it says that most were not previously published, but if we see a photograph from the book that looks like it is obviously from the same shooting as a photograph clearly attributed in a periodical, then it can probably be safely attributed also. Examples of newspapers: some photos by Hare in this edition of the weekly French newspaper L'Illustration and several photos by Bulla in this edition. There are also websites with collections of photos by Bulla, as this site, or that comment some photos by Hare and by Bulla, as this site (in French), and they can be used for comparison. -- Asclepias (talk) 06:19, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
Hi Asclepias, thanks again for your input. I updated the three images I had uploaded the previous days. Now it says under author: „One of the following: Richard Harding Davis, James F. J. Archibald, Ellis Ashmead-Bartlett, Henry James Whigham, Frederick Palmer, Robert L. Dunn, James H. Hare (Jimmy Hare), Victor K. Bulla.“ I still have a problem linking Victor/Viktor Bulla correctly. Can you help me with this?
By the way: the link to to the book is exactly the book I own – unbelievable that it’s available online. Thanks for the link.
Also, thanks for the link of Victor Bulla. Amazing images of the Russo-Japanese War. Do you think I could download those and upload them to ‚‘Wiki Commons’’ ?
D’ailleurs: tu es français? Take care, --Chris.w.braun (talk) 21:27, 18 May 2014 (UTC)
Commons doesn't have a gallery page about V. Bulla. If we want to link his name from a file description page on Commons, it is possible to link it to the article on one of the Wikipedias. When you find interesting images on the internet and they are in the public domain and in the scope of Commons, sure, you can upload a copy to Commons. It is often useful to do a search by image on Google to look if a better reproduction of the same image is available on some other website and upload to Commons the best reproduction. Also, the search can sometimes find more complete information about the photo. The website "allworldwars" does not seem to mention the sources from where it reproduced the images. That is unfortunate and we should try to find the information about the original publications, but that should not be a problem to upload them, because reproductions of Bulla's photos of the Russo-Japanese war can be reasonably assumed to be from publications from 1904-1905. Some may be from your book. -- Asclepias (talk) 02:10, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

Existing information remains hidden and is incorrect

The " File:Hinde Amchanitzki's Lehr-bukh vi azoy tsu kokhen un baken (Textbook on How to Cook and Bake), published in New York, c. 1901, Library of Congress Hebraic Section.jpg " ( https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Hinde_Amchanitzki%27s_Lehr-bukh_vi_azoy_tsu_kokhen_un_baken_(Textbook_on_How_to_Cook_and_Bake),_published_in_New_York,_c._1901,_Library_of_Congress_Hebraic_Section.jpg ) has (hidden) descriptions in 5 other languages but they do not appear in a visible mode (you can see them only when you try to edit it). I discovered this as, after having included the image in the Spanish Wikipedia, I also intended to add the Spanish description to that file. | Concerning the French description: " L'auteur, Hinde Amchanitzki, est représentée sur la couverture " | Could you please adjust these little issues? Thanks a lot --Calimeronte (talk) 20:30, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

All six languages display fine for me. I’ve made the corrections but, sorry, I have no idea why the descriptions are hidden to you. Perhaps a glitch in your browser’s handling of mixed left-to-right and right-to-left text? Just a wild guess … one way to test it might be to move the Hebrew and Yiddish to the end, to see if the other three descriptions reappear (you needn’t save the page for this experiment, just preview it).—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:04, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

Uploading of Unsourced Audio

Hi, I have an audio clip which is a news report on the death of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, unfortunately there is no source i.e. no indication where it has originated (A radio or television broadcast), whether it is copyrighted or public domain. I feel that it is a significant historic event but I don't know if I post it that it will cause a copyright issue. Any guidance would be appreciated. TheGoofyGolfer (talk) 21:48, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

Hello GoofyGolfer. Such a clip would undoubtedly be of educational use but we have to assume that it is copyright, unless you can find the source and obtain explicit permission from the original author(s). Commons cannot host any files that don't have such information, apart from really old public domain (PD) exceptions, but if it is a recent news report then it is unlikely to be PD. This appears to be about File:Yamato University01.JPG or File:Yamato University02.JPG and the inability to edit those pages? I don't see anything wrong with the two files, though. The block mentioned does not exist here at the Commons, but at the Japanese Wikipedia. If you can log in at the Japanese Wikipedia, you should be able to edit, though. Lupo 15:14, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

rename/move/redirct a template

Hi, first I created the Template:VehicleModelYear, than i improved it and created a new one calling it Template:VehicleModelYearC because the old one was still in use. But that is not anymore the case. So now there is the chance to rename the template with ugly C at the end into one with the pure name without C. But how and who can do that. On the User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands I can just request category moving, no template moving. Thanks a lot for your reply! --W like wiki (talk) 22:35, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

Hello W like wiki. The best way to do this is to request a speedy deletion of Template:VehicleModelYear and the associated doc, under G6/G7 (uncontroversial move and author requested), and once it is deleted, click on the move tab at the top of Template:VehicleModelYearC. When that is done, it will need changing on all the places it is used, although this isn't essential, but I'll give you a hand if you wish. I've made the speedy requests, so just wait for it to be deleted. Green Giant (talk) 13:22, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

Hello Perhelion, I apologise to every user if I've annoyed them, I wasn't aware that it was a secret. I'd be happy to help write guidelines like this if they doesn't already exist. Green Giant (talk) 14:35, 19 May 2014 (UTC)
@Perhelion: maybe a good place for a new easy guideline is Commons:Rename a template according to Commons:Rename a category and place there a link to this page under the see-also-topic and do the same on other pages eg Commons:File renaming.

Hi there,

I do not know where the image in question has originally been published; many internet sites feature the picture, though none gives any indication as to where it comes from. The picture was taken somewhere in Spain, certainly before end-1939 and probably in 1936 or 1937. Since the author is unknown and there is no known copyright holder, I thought it was safe to get it published in Wiki Commons. However, I have noticed the picture is tagged as possibly to be deleted because it provides insufficient information on copyright.

I wonder whether you could help me to understand why the above picture is dubious, while Durruti-militia.png is not. Its author is also unknown and it was also taken in Spain in 1936. It is tagged as being in public domain because copyright has expired and author is anonymous. Why the same criteria do not apply to Carlist requetes?

Sorry for bothering, but if I get it explaind I will not be uploading dubious pictures any more, which surely would save the time of you admins

cheers, Dd1495 (talk) 14:53, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

--Dd1495 (talk) 14:53, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

There is a difference between "internet sites showing this photograph do not indicate source or author" and "the photo was originally published anonymously". If the original source could be tracked down it might show the author.
The image has been tagged with insufficient copyright (using a semi-automatic tool) because it did not have a copyright template. If the image is really anonymous then Anonymous-EU could be used, although I note that Spain has a longer (life+80 years) copyright for old works. MKFI (talk) 06:43, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

Error(?) with reversion of File:Mariakrk1.JPG

I just have tried to revert the younger version (10:25, 12. Jun. 2009) of that image because it obviously provides no real improvement (it is darker and the contrast is much lower, the whole image is more or less brown). However, instead of restoring the older version (09:15, 11. Dez. 2007), simply the 2007 version was uploaded again. Does anyone know what went wrong? --Gretarsson (talk) 12:15, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

The file is currently showing the 2007 version to me. Perhaps your local browser cache has not updated? MKFI (talk) 12:58, 21 May 2014 (UTC)
You are absolutely right. Now it shows the original version to me too. So the problem was related to my browser cache. I had updated the page several times after the reversion and usually (not to say always) then the cache has been updated as well. But today it has not and that’s why I was somewhat confused about that... Thanks! --Gretarsson (talk) 13:42, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

Using photos for a commercial publication

Hello,

I have found on Wikicommons some pictures I would want to use for a publication. I have make sure to note the owner's name (or nickname), the name of the licence it has been released with and the link to the page where the photo is posted (or is it the link to the licence that is necessary?); but I am not sure I really can use the photos.

- How can I make sure I respect the CC-BY-SA licences by reproducing the photos for a printed or CD publication, while they cannot be reused the same (the reader can't copy/paste the photos, as we need to protect other documents on the CD)? - Are the CC-BY-SA documents all ok with commercial use if we display the name of it (CC-BY-SA 3.0...) next to the document we want to use? - How come I never see publications with Wikicommons documents if the use of them is so little inconvenient (name of licence, name of owner, link to the page - even if that mention does not seem obligatory)?

The publication I intend to make is a pedagogical one and will not be sold thousands of copies; however we are going to sell it, so is that correct to "make money" with documents I have found for free here? I would not want to prejudice anyone.

Thank you very much in advance for your help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hcsnumsiri (talk • contribs)

That's a lot of questions.
  1. Assuming we are talking strictly about CC-BY and CC-BY-SA, in addition to the requirement to attribute the photo -- owner's name (or nickname) -- mentioning the license and linking the Commons page containing the photo should be adequate. So would mentioning and linking to the license itself. On a CD I would think it would probably be clearest to do both: link the license name to the license, and explicitly link your source.
  2. There is no problem with the fact that your printed or CD publication is not readily reused. However, if you make any modifications to a CC-BY-SA image, you have to license those modifications under CC-BY-SA. That doesn't mean you have to make it technically easy to copy them: for example, if a newspaper prints one of my CC-BY-SA photos and they crop it, adjust the contrast, etc., they are under no obligation to post a readily copied online version; they just can't reserve they basic rights on their version of my photo as they could if my photo was public domain.
  3. CC-BY-SA is fine for commercial use. Of course, like pretty much any non-profit, Wikimedia Foundation welcomes monetary contributions, and if you use someone's work especially prominently -- e.g. as a cover photo, or if you make extensive use of one person's work -- it might be a nice gesture to offer them at least a token payment, but nothing of the sort is required.
    • All images on Commons should be fine for commercial use, give or take the possibility that the uploader misrepresented their own rights. Use reasonable caution: if someone with only a few uploads uploaded what appears to be an official portrait of a Soviet general and claimed it as their own work, then it is likely that they are lying and we just haven't caught it yet. (Not every photo uploaded to Commons is reviewed promptly.)
  4. I don't know why you never see such publications. I know that, very often, when people wish to reuse my photos they contact me and arrange to license them differently; also, it is likely that a reuser links the license but don't link back to Commons; also, frankly, some people just don't conform & use them illegally. I had at least one case where I had to get a lawyer involved after a local newspaper used several of my photos without even attributing them.

Hello,

Thank you very much for your answers. Sorry about the repost, I found out about the Village Pump/copyright section right after this section and forgot to delete my questions on this one.

I really appreciate your help and the principles of this community. The photos I am interested into are non-artistic ones and all from a different photographer. I still am surprised by the fact that numerous documents here could interest publisher (even for "coffe table books"). I am not sure they are aware of it - but in a sense, maybe that's better, as they wouldn't all be serious or honest about attributing them.

Thank you again.

Can this image be used outside of the US?

I am working on an german article about the OSU. Therefore I would like to use the this image [5], after transferring it to wikimedia commons. I just want to make sure that it is in the public domain outside the US. Can someone confirm? --Bloodworx (talk) 17:22, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

Whether or not it's in the PD outside the US isn't important for Commons. We don't really have enough details on it; it's almost certainly PD in the US (and thus PD in countries that have the rule of the shorter term for the US), but there is no original publication information, nor any information about the photographer (which may be nonexistent, but we don't have any evidence that it is anonymous.)--Prosfilaes (talk) 23:00, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

Finding a Commons photo'g by location?

Hello! I've never been successful in finding categories for Commons contributors by location. I'm hoping for a photographer near Toronto who might be willing/able/interested to photograph the MuchMusic Video Awards. We sent a freelancer not associated with Commons years ago (he volunteered), but I'd like to send someone from the community this time. I can probably get accreditation for them. -- Nick Moreau (talk) 20:48, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

Hello, I thought if someone would know Wikimedians in Ontario, it would be you. If even you must ask here, that doesn't start well. :-/ Anyway, here's a suggestion, imperfect as it is. You can look what users were active at uploading their own photos from Toronto in the last couple weeks. A search on Commons with something like "2014-05" Toronto should return some useful results. Of course, it also returns many false positives (files transferred from flickr), but you should find at least some usable results through the lot. Then choose those uploaders that have a good upload history and contact them on their talk pages and ask them if they're interested. You can also ask users who uploaded photos categorized in Category:2014 in Toronto. That's a bit of work, but it's targeted more precisely and would better your chances of finding someone. Other than that, the Category:Users in Canada would probably not help much. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:24, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

Image deletion

How do I delete File:Cakes and Food Made of Seaweed by Kubo Shunman.png? It's a duplicate file. I also need to rename the higher resolution file File:Cakes and Food Made of Seaweed by Kubo Shunman, jpg.jpg to File:Cakes and Food Made of Seaweed by Kubo Shunman.jpg. --MuseumGeek (talk) 12:06, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

Hello MuseumGeek. Only admins and above can actually delete files and even then it isn't real deletion; all that happens is that the file is no longer visible to the general public. If you want to delete files that you have uploaded within seven days of uploading, you can do so by clicking the edit tab at the top of the file page and then adding the following:
User requested
Renaming files is done by admins and file movers. You can request a rename by clicking on the edit tab and adding the following:

  • 1 is the new name you'd like including the extension e.g. a jpg or png;
  • 2 is the rationale (chosen from 1 - 7) and in this case it would be 1 because you are the uploader;
  • 3 is the reason you want to rename the file.
I recommend clicking on the preview button below the editing window and having a quick look to see if it is correct before saving. If done correctly it should show a a pale box which starts with the words "It has been suggested by ...". Green Giant (talk) 14:42, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

Help with Diagram from PNAS article

Hello - Below are an email I sent to PNAS and their response. Does anyone see a way for me to easily include a diagram from a 2013 PNAS article? It might be the case that I can get special permission for one diagram from PNAS, but is there a Wikimedia licence that covers the below? Might it be easier in the English Wikipedia? PAR (talk) 03:11, 20 May 2014 (UTC)

- - -

MY EMAIL:

Hello - thanks for your help on this. Just to be clear, for me to upload this file, Wikipedia requires a very explicit permission, by which you grant anyone the right to use the work in a commercial product or otherwise, and to modify it according to their needs, as long as any modified version is not attributed to PNAS. PNAS will always retain copyright of the original work, and retain the right to be attributed to PNAS, as you specified above. I would be using the original version, saying "permission granted from..." and a link to the full reference which is listed on the Wikipedia page, or possibly a modified version that I would of course run by the authors to verify validity. I would then say "adapted from ..." with a similar link.

If all of this is still agreeable to you, then I can send you an email template that you would send to Wikimedia commons, which they would keep on file and allow me to upload the diagram.

RESPONSE

Understood, thank you for checking. However, if a PNAS figure is modified/adapted from its originally published image, it will still need to be credited as originally from PNAS within future works. Thus, PNAS cannot agree to these terms, as any modified version will still need to the attributed to PNAS. I’ve included a link below to our standard information about rights and permissions for reference.

link: http://www.pnas.org/site/aboutpnas/rightperm.xhtml

Yes, it would be easier within en-wiki, which allows use of non-free images. Commons does not allow these. See en:Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline and especially en:Template:Non-free use rationale. - Jmabel ! talk 15:47, 20 May 2014 (UTC)

"Wikipedia requires a very explicit permission, by which you grant anyone the right to use the work in a commercial product or otherwise, and to modify it according to their needs, as long as any modified version is not attributed to PNAS."
That's incorrect. The Creative Commons Attribution clause states that modified versions must be described as "based on a work by PNAS". That it, it's forbidden to say "work by PNAS" or not mention PNAS in a modified version. Ykou should email them again to clarify that. --NaBUru38 (talk) 16:50, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

That’s not possible. To replace the SVG version, you will need to edit it with a drawing program and save (or export) the new map in the same format. The PNG, being a raster image, will not be easy to update in the future, so it’s preferable to keep the vector artwork current instead.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 04:26, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

File from Russian Wikipedia

Dear friends,

I tried to upload a file from Russian Wikipedia,

https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A4%D0%B0%D0%B9%D0%BB:Minoan_genius.png

but I guess I didn't do it correctly,

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Minoan_genius.png

I'd like to mark it as PD-Art, because it's an exact copy of a 2-dimensional art work that was created in 1914 (copied from a Russian book published in 1914).

This 2-dimensional art work is itself a copy of an ancient art work that was created 4000 years ago. So it seems there should be no problem with copyright?

Please help me to clarify this matter.

Best wishes, Y-barton (talk) 02:18, 23 May 2014 (UTC)

Well, you did it nearly correct. In theory :-) You need to provide the real source (R.v.Lichtenberg) Ru-wiki is not a real source for Commons. I fixed the license, author, and source. Have a look. :) Oh, and I added the Now Commons tag on RUwiki as well. No need to have more than one. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 15:47, 23 May 2014 (UTC)

It did seem to me that this wasn't such a serious problem, but now I understand better how this process works. I've bookmarked your post as a further reference for any similar uploads in the future. All the best, Y-barton (talk) 23:24, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

Just trying to do a simple search for "Veterans Benefits Backlog" keep getting no results found...obviously I'm doing something wrong, there must be lots of info regarding this, I just don't know how to do the search correctly...

What do you expect to find? --rimshottalk 19:35, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
The site you are on (Wikimedia Commons) is mainly a media repository (pictures and, to a lesser extent, sound), so I wouldn't expect us to have anything along those lines. - Jmabel ! talk 16:19, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

Rights to a photo

I have written an article about someone (Hugh Pilkington). I have been asked to supply a photo. I have two. One is from a website from the foundation he helped start. I know that the Foundation would give me permission to use it. How do I document the fact that I have such permission? The other is a photo from a private person who says I can use it. Again, how do I establish this fact? Thanks Ron Witton

Hi, Find who is the owner of the copyright on the photo, then contact that copyright owner and ask him if he would agree to offer a free license and, if so, ask him to send his licensing statement to Wikimedia. Please read the help page Commons:OTRS for all the details about how to proceed. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:01, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

I've licensed the File:Parnaso Sergipano (Volume 1).pdf with PD-BR-URAAwriter, but instead of transcluding PD-BR-URAAwriter, it's displaying the PD-1996-text. My user interface is set to en. Can someone please help me to debug it? Lugusto 19:24, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

I can't help you with the template problem, but there's no point in using a URAA template here; works published before 1923 are PD in the US. I added to the page.--Prosfilaes (talk) 23:31, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
I'm sorry to disagree, but there is a point: to inform those that resides in country of production that usage of that content is OK because that content isn't PD only at USA (the template contains such info, that isn't included on PD-old-auto-1923 or on PD-1996-text). Lugusto 01:19, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
BTW thanks to yor edit I've found the issue: this change caused the issue. I've fixed with this edit. Many thanks, Lugusto 01:28, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
PD-old-auto-1923 says "The author died in 1914, so this work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 90 years or less." That's nothing about the US. The whole point of templates like PD-old-auto is so we don't need a specialized template for every nation. And using the template you want has a bunch of irrelevant confusing things; the URAA date is simply irrelevant here.--Prosfilaes (talk) 04:58, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Copyright question

User:TheArmyGrows asked, in this question at the en:Wikipedia Help Desk, for the permission on File:Grafstract Expressionism.jpg to be "changed to copyright". The image shows a number of works of art, so I suspect that TheArmyGrows did not have the right to upload it. I think it should be deleted. I admit I am out of my depth here. Maproom (talk) 22:36, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

If this is about File:Grafstract Expressionism.jpg, the stated source appears to be copyrighted. Even if the uploader actually did take the picture and retains rights to it, there remains to be addressed the copyright on the paintings shown.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 03:39, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
To be fair, we should give the uploader a chance to fix this problem so I have tagged it as no-permissions. That will give them at least seven days to clarify licensing issues. Green Giant (talk) 11:43, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

Yes. You can zoom in. The full version is at [6]. See Help:Zoomable images for how to deal with this kind of repository. They use Contentdm. Note that they don't say it was PD... Lupo 17:24, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

I want to upload the poster art for my husband's film, The Crimson House, in which I have been creating a Wiki page for

I currently have the file to upload for my husband's film, The Crimson House. I wanted to be able to use it on the wiki page we have created. This film nor the poster have a copyright registered. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JuggaletteJen216 (talk • contribs) 19:27, 27 May 2014‎ (UTC)

I'm guessing the wiki in question is English Wikipedia and the page in question is en:The Crimson House (2013 Film). It seems likely that the article will be deleted, which means that the poster would probably be outside of Commons' project scope as well. If, for some reason, it is not outside our project scope, you can only upload it if the copyright holder(s) agree to publish the poster under a license that allows anyone to use, modify and distribute it for any purpose, including commercial purposes. For movie posters, you will typically need to e-mail a written permission statement to our permission archive. LX (talk, contribs) 21:02, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

Category: List of Skytrain stations in Vancouver and two subcategories that should be merged because of a Name Change.

Hi there. I have been editing the article: 'Commercial-Broadway Station', part of Vancouver's 'Skytrain' rail transit system. This station underwent a name change in 2009 to avoid confusion with another station on the then soon to open 'Canada Line'. When checking out links and photo descriptions it has become evident that the names of the two stations that were rolled into the single present name are still out there and some photo captions have proved easy to change. BUT - now I find the two separate station names listed as sub categories each with its own small set of photos etc. and this creates a problem that defies my ability to rectify, it requires an accomplished 'Wikipedian'. In the overall scheme of things this is very small beer but I leave it with you anyway. If the fix is complex then someone else should be doing it - as they say, 'a litle knowledge is a dangerous thing'! Spyglasses (talk) 07:09, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

Please, explain clearly what you want, because I do not understand what you talking about. Ruslik (talk) 12:52, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
Simple explanation: Two categories need merging - Category:Broadway Station and the misspelt Category:Commerical Drive Station - because the stations were merged.
✓ Done at Category:Commercial–Broadway Station. Added a couple of files that fit into the new category. Green Giant (talk) 14:41, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

Maps of the Hari River

Hi, I'm trying to add a map of the Hari River to Wikipedia page on the Hari River but I couldn't find any. Thanks for the helpMonopoly31121993 (talk) 12:54, 29 May 2014 (UTC)

There does not appear to be any maps in Category:Hari River. Category:Maps of rivers of Afghanistan, Category:Maps of rivers of Iran and Category:Maps of rivers of Turkmenistan are all yet to be created, so the closest place to look would be Category:Maps of rivers of Asia, which doesn't look very promising either. Unresolving metadata for camera model

In the Metadata section of File:Guto Nyth Brân gravestone in St Gwynno's Church graveyard, Llanwynno.JPG, the Camera model is auto-generated from the EXIF data as en:E-P1. Wiki Loves Earth

Hallo liebes Wikimedia Team!

altering or retouching an image

I am new to both Wiki Commons AND to Paint Shop Pro X6. I want to use an image from Commons, but some of the commands on the new Paint Shop Pro are greyed out, meaning non-active. A local told me that that is probably NOT a malfunction of my new paint program, but rather some sort of block out or lock on the manipulation of the image by the artist, or by Commons. The image is attributable to the U S Govt, so I doubt they blocked anything. They're all so nice. Can anyone shed any light on where my greyed out problem may lie? Heree or on Commons? Thanks btw - all I wish to do it crop the thing into a round shape - not change the picture in any way. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.183.249.151 (talk • contribs) 22:32, 29 May 2014‎ (UTC)

Nothing special about that file AFAICT: plain RGB colour with no profile, having no additional channels or other ‘extras’, not even any camera or copyright metadata. (It’s certainly on the small side—and could have used gentler JPEG compression, as there are severe artefacts in places—but that‘s neither here nor there.) It can be quite normal for some menu items to be unavailable: for one common example, many applications grey out the Save command if the document has not been altered. I’ve never used PSP either, so I have no idea under what circumstances it might disable various features. Can you give some examples of these commands (and perhaps any similar functions that are available)? Is this the only image that’s given you trouble recently? Have you tried re-downloading it, in case your copy was damaged?
There‘s no way I know of that a ‘naked‘ image file can be protected against specific kinds of modification.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 02:08, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
My goal is to make this photo round, which I have learned is NOT cropping. The instruction for this begins with:
  • Open Image
  • Layers>Promote Background
  • Select Shape Tool
  • click and drag it into image
  • Selections>From Vector Object
  • Image>Crop to Selection
Problems are:
  • Promote Background in "Layers" is greyed out
  • I can find nothing called "SHAPE TOOL"
  • I can find nothing called "SELECTIONS"
Any help, other than maybe from a optometrist to grind me some new lens'? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.183.249.151 (talk • contribs) 03:23, 30 May 2014‎ (UTC)
This really seems like more of a question for Corel's customer support than for Wikimedia Commons' help desk. There is nothing special about File:Roselawn-natchitoches-la1.jpg, and I'm sure you'd run into the same problems with just about any other JPEG you can find. LX (talk, contribs) 10:18, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
While I'm a photoshop user not a PSPer, I would guess that the reason "layers" is greyed out is because a JPEG has no layers. You will probably need to convert the background into a layer first. -mattbuck (Talk) 00:48, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
I considered the possibility, but thought that might be what the second step in the instructions is supposed to do. Maybe File>Save As in the applications’s native format first?—Odysseus1479 (talk) 02:36, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

Real problem related to search for images

I am a faculty member that often takes bits of time to edit here, as my public service. I edit in the chemistry, pharmacology, and drug discovery areas.

Frequently, when time is short, I use Wikimedia Commons chemical structure images to supplement material in articles (as placeholders until ideal images can be created and imported).

However, finding the correct image is either near to impossible or ridiculously time consuming, because of an apparent glitch in the way the Wikimedia Commons search algorithms operate.

Specifically, one cannot rely on individual contributors to name files in ways that allow easy searching for specific substances. However, if the whole of the page—including "Description" and other fields—can be searched, one can often find a suitable image, when search of the file names alone has failed. However, the algorithm for search, in the advanced mode, with the "Everything" (all fields) option checked, does not appear to search the image's description field.

Here is an example: I have edited the descriptions of three image files of nandrolone, the international nonproprietary name (INN) given to 19-nortestosterone, to contain the two additional search terms, "nortestosterone" and "norsteroid"—because if a person coming here wants an example of a norsteroid, she or he may not know that a nortestosterone exists, and even if so, will likely not know the INN for this drug is "nandrolone". In testing the search after this edit, I get no hits when searching for either "norsteroid" or "nortestosterone" in the advanced, search "Everything" mode.

This is a serious technical deficiency that undermines the otherwise superb attributes of Wikimedia Commons as a source of Wikipedia images. I ask attention to this technical matter, at your earliest possible convenience.

Also curious is the fact that using the double square bracket markup convention in these Comments result in red text—though the terms bracketed appear in Wikipedia (INN and norsteroid) or at Wikimedia Commons (nandrolone). What is the the double square bracket markup convention intended to do/mean, here in these Comments?

Le Prof Leprof 7272 (talk) 13:39, 30 May 2014 (UTC)

The search functionality searches the whole page. The reason you don't get any results for text that you've just introduced is that the search index has not yet updated. You'll have the same problem with Google or any other search engine. Square brackets mean the same thing here as on other Mediawiki sites. The links are red because the pages you link to don't exist in the main (gallery) namespace here on Commons. LX (talk, contribs) 14:26, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
If you intend to link to the English-language wikipedia article Norsteroid, you can do so with Norsteroid or Norsteroid. Remember that the English-language Wikipedia is a different wiki, albeit with the same technology and operated by the same foundation. - Jmabel ! talk 22:08, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
