Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Edinburgh Trams[edit]

Hello! I noticed, while cleaning up the Edinburgh Trams article on Wikipedia a while ago, and raising it to good article status, that you had taken most of our pictures of the tram works. As the tramway is nearing completion, I've been looking for newer pictures to update the article with, as the present ones are quite outdated. Colour corrections to images[edit]

Hi there,

Thanks for uploading all those images! I thought it would be fair to let you know that I've made some colour balance and brightness/contrast adjustments to three of your recent uploads.

I noticed a few had a slightly purple cast- which I assumed was something to do with the scan (*) and not the original photo(?)- so I tweaked the overall colour balance until they looked as neutral as possible. I've also tweaked the brightness (and added shadow enhance filter in one case), but only for the entire image- I haven't retouched or selectively modified anything.

You can see which ones were changed in my file upload history.

If you're unhappy with any of these changes, please feel free to revert them to the original uploaded versions of your images. Thank you.

(*) Maybe I'm making assumptions, but it can be a pain in the neck getting accurate colour from a scanner sometimes, I've found...

Hi Kim. Many thanks on all your uploads to Commons/geograph. I've recently created Edinburgh Trams, and have similar plans for Lothian Buses, and it wouldn't even really be worthwhile starting such projects without your uploads. You also might be interested in another of my recent creations, Edinburgh Park & Ride network, although you don't appear to be a fan of photographing car parks? (who is!). Finishing that one last night nearly put me into a coma. Now to the request - the next time you're out geographing, can I give you a wish list? As you may be able to tell, there are still some places where we have zero images, while others could do with a couple more for completeness. I'll hold off on the exact requests until I know you're up for it, and where you're prepared to go - but it's also absolutely no problem if you don't fancy it, it's not like you'd be getting paid! In my experience, there's always something to be getting on with here while waiting for images of xyz to turn up, and they inevitably do. Ultra7 (talk) 15:58, 26 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Re. your reply, if you're focussed on historic places, then rather than burdening you with a long list, I'll keep it brief and only mention the three places which look to have no shots at all, in the hope they will bury themselves in the back of your mind and ring a bell in the months/years to come. They are: Bankhead tram stop, Newcraighall Park & Ride and Seafield bus works 55°57′43″N 3°07′35″W / 55.96188°N 3.1263°W (further up the road from Marine garage). Although I would be extremely surprised if you found yourself passing either of the latter two - there doesn't seem to be anything historically interesting in their surrounding areas at all (although you would probably know better than me). As an aside, I do quite like those images you take on Princes street of buses in profile with the castle in the background - keep them coming by all means - over time they form a sort of historical record in of themselves. Having been a pantheon of uniformity up until 1999, Lothian now seem determined to keep up their post 2000 habit of changing their liveries and bus types every few years, meaning that getting a decent set together of each combination is looking to be quite difficult. I also quite like the fact you're uploading old photos too, as I'm finding all too often on geograph that once you go beyond 2005 the number of images drops off a cliff, for obvious reasons. Although always bear in mind the copyright status of old style prints, and always be explicit about the fact these were both taken and scanned by you - in my experience geograph can be every bit as strict on that as Commons is if there is any ambiguity. Actually, it appears Seafield is soon to be redundant once the various things happening at Longstone are finished. It turns out Seafield is both a bodyshop and some kind of classroom facility - both of which are to transfer to Longstone into the refurbished old workshop and a new academy building respectively. Not sure if that changes your view on its historicity or not (the building itself doesn't look old so probably will be re-used)...but I thought I'd better mention it in case you end up there at some point and are confronted by supermarket distribution centre or a discount carpet warehouse! Dear Kim,

I am emailing to ask permission to use one of your images of the Scottish Parliament building without including the required attribution. The project I am working on is an animated educational series for children, teaching them about Citizenship issues across the United Kingdom.

Though in an ideal world we would be able to suitably credit the use of your image, the way the animations are designed is to introduce the children to an imaginary world they can really immerse themselves in so any unrelated text would spoil this effect.

The alternative option would be to add a credit at the end, but unfortunately as embedded educational content there are no credits, even we don't get one!

The other images we have used have been copyright free with no need for attribution, however we particularly like your image of the Scottish Parliament building (see link) and feel it suits our purposes perfectly and so it would be fantastic if you would allow us to use it without attribution.
