First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Followed the advice here "I left a note in your thread at commons about the 7 day limit. The easiest way to license it may be to have your mate create an account and re-upload the image to the same file page. That way the copyright holder can apply his own license without all the other hoops. Just have him select the 'upload new version of this file' and leave 'uploaded by copyright holder' as an edit summary. Please use PNG for scans[edit]

The JPEG format is intended only for photographs (smooth and noisy images). If you upload scanned line-art images (such as maps), the PNG format is much more appropriate. Some helpful information and guidelines can be found in Wikipedia:Preparing images for upload and Help:Scanning. I've followed the links you suggested but they're written for people who know much more than me. What do I need to do different? I have used "take a snapshot" , tidied things with "paint" and upload.Keith-264 (talk) 13:03, 14 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It is never too late to learn. ;–) If by "paint" you mean MS Paint, it works fine with the PNG format. Basically, when saving a file, select "PNG" from the file types. (Keep in mind that intermediate results should never be saved as JPEG, since it is lossy and thus corrupts the images — the artifacts might be not very noticeable at first glance, but they accumulate and amplify each time.) Mystery[edit]

Looked at the source. Map is not there. Map may be included in the book (I see some thin slices of a map in the pdf) but not in the version on archive.org. Maybe somewhere else? Please add links and page numbers to the sources of your uploads. I just looked at a book with more than 600 pages for 10 minutes, knowing I could have found the map in 10 seconds if only you had provided the page number. I haven't even found it by the way.
