Is this image OK for Wikimedia?

For some reason, I doubt File:Official press photo of Princess Isabella, 5 years old, April 2012.jpg is really "free enough" for Wikimedia (i.e. I suspect there are copyright issues, otherwise there would be tons of pictures from the official website of the Danish monarchy). Surtsicna (talk) 10:11, 4 November 2012 (UTC)

You are correct. The uploader, who has "contributed" nothing but copyright violations to Commons simply made up a false licensing claim. Tagged for deletion. Thanks, LX (talk, contribs) 11:00, 4 November 2012 (UTC)

Image needs a minor modification

The image of the flag File:Naval Jack of Namibia.svg needs to have a thin outline drawn around it - because most of the flag is plain white it disapears against the page background. It creates the impression that the flag is actually just a smaller version of the Namibian national flag - which actually is only one quarter of the flag. Dodger67 (talk) 09:34, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

If you want a border around any image, you can just use the "border" option. [[File:Naval Jack of Namibia.svg|border|right|50px]] results in the example on the right. LX (talk, contribs) 10:34, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Has uploading a file become more difficult?

I have been trying to use the form at http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Upload&uselang=ownwork to upload a file. I know that in the "permissions" field, I am meant to type something like "{{CC-SA}}", but I can't remember what. There are two links next to the field, "Permission" and "License tags", which look as if they might help; but neither of them tells me what to put in the field, and using either of them means that when I use the back button to return to the form, some of the fields I had already completed have been blanked so I have to start again. After going round this loop three times, I have given up for the day.Maproom (talk) 16:31, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

Before you start the upload process, you should already have decided what license you want to offer with your work. The two links you referred to (Commons:Licensing and Commons:Copyright tags) may help make that choice and indicate which template expresses your choice. But nobody can tell you what to write, because the taking of this licensing decision is your exclusive right. But, if you ask, other people may offer you their suggestions about their favorite licenses. If you want to look at the information pages without leaving the upload form, you can open separate windows in your browser. Once your choice of template is made, then technically you write the chosen template's name, i.e. "{{Replace this with the chosen template's name}}". -- Asclepias (talk) 17:54, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
I know what license I want to use, it's {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0|GFDL}}. A new problem is how to get it into the edit box. I think there used to be a select-box to select it from, which had the advantage of doing the formatting automatically, so I didn't need to guess whether or not to type in the enclosing braces and tags. Maproom (talk) 18:32, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for the tip about opening separate windows for the help pages. At last I have managed to do the upload. I had been confusing the "Permission" field with the "Licensing" field. I also realised eventually that you are meant to specify the original source of the work in the "Author(s)" field, not in the "Original source" field. Maproom (talk) 19:19, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

Ti prague nov98.jpg

the image is available under a free license, but despite what it says copyright all three parts of the picture. is not that a contradiction? In addition, I do not understand why all mail conversation between requesters and holder are included. it should probably be enough to use the correct template, also ending there.--109.232.72.49 22:04, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

For what it's worth, probably roughly half the content on Commons is copyrighted. For example, I don't waive copyright on my photos: I just provide a license that allows others to use them, if they conform to the licensing terms.
I don't think the presence of a copyright notice on the graphic is actively good, but it's no more of an issue than any other watermark. And while the inclusion of the complete correspondence might be a bit excessive, it's basically harmless. - Jmabel ! talk 23:55, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

Upload File Error

For the past few days I have been trying to upload pictures into Wikipedia Commons and when I click on the Upload File option on the left the File Upload Wizard never properly loads. The only thing I ever get is the loading circle on my page. Is there currently technical issues? Researchassistant101 (talk) 01:24, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Looks like it based on Commons:Upload Wizard feedback. We've had these reports with varying frequency since the wizard was introduced 1½ years ago. Commons:Upload tends to be broken a lot less frequently. LX (talk, contribs) 10:40, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Satisfying copyright requirements- old postcard image

I have been attempting to add a photo to 'SS Oronsay (1925)'. It is an old postcard image found on the internet. I have quoted a source andTemplate:PD Unknown and though the UK license has come up the copyright requirements are still not satisfied, and automatic deletion after 7 days is still due to happen. I have looked at other old ship entries- eg 'RMS Mauretania (1909)' and though the licensing info. is identical the copyright is satisactory. Why can this be?

Please note that I have used 'PD Unknown' correctly though it has not come up as typed above! ie underscore does not appear!

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Larryjen (talk • contribs) 11:13, 1 November 2012‎ (UTC)

There is no template named "PD Unknown". You were trying to use a template that does not exist. You can find existing PD templates in categories such as PD license tags by author type and PD license tags (ignore the fact that they use confusingly the term "license" instead of "status"). Anyway, do not worry too much about templates. Finding the proper PD templates that will match the status information for a file is a technicality that can be handled by other users, as long as you provide the relevant information about the author and original publication of the photograph and if that information is verifiable. The important thing for you to do, before anything else, is research and provide that information. When, where, by who, was the photograph originally published? You did not explain what research you did before you could declare that the author is unknown. Did you contact the website from where you copied the file to obtain more information about the origin of the image? What is written on the back of the print? Who published the postcard, if it is a postcard? The boat made its first voyage in 1925, but what is the source of your information that that particular image was published in 1925? From all those informations, then describe your line of reasoning to arrive at your conclusion that the photograph is in the public domain in the United States. If those informations are provided, then the proper templates will come naturally, so to speak. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:58, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

how do you create the space filling models that wikipedia uses?

The space filling models that wikipedia/wikimedia commons has is very interesting. What software do they use to create those space filling models? they have the -3D-vdW extension at the end of their names. - unsigned

There are lots of different pieces of software that various users use to generate space-filling models. I use Avogadro and Jmol. Commons:WikiProject Chemistry and w:Wikipedia:WikiProject Chemistry are good places to discuss them. If you see an image you particularly like, you can always try contacting the listed contributor of it to see how he/she did it. DMacks (talk) 02:30, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

Newbie uploading photo

Hi I am a complete beginner trying to upload a photo to an existing biography page of Henry Heathcote. The image is a jpeg of a portrait painting - the subject died in 1851 and the image is from a book published in 1899, so I am sure it is out of copyright.

I have tried reading all the help pages but I still can't work out how to enter the information requested.

Please help, in plain English!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by The Tree Lady (talk • contribs) 11:25, 2 November 2012‎ (UTC)

I'm sure the image should be fine for upload.
It would help if you would be specific about which requested information you can't fill in. I'm sure you can work some of it out.
What country was the book published in? If it was the U.S., this is all a bit simpler than if otherwise.

I'm not sure why the permission Template:Cc-by-sa.3.0 did not get added to my uploaded File:Intaglio Angel by Chaim Koppelman.jpg. I got notified it would be deleted if the permission was not added but I do not see how to do it. Can someone please help? DorothyKoppelman (talk) 03:37, 4 November 2012 (UTC)

Either the upload process had a glitch or you didn't press the right button or something. Anyway, you can just add the license template by modifying the description page, like you did on the pages of other files in the past. Finding Animation artists

To find animators, you click on 'Community portal' on the top left of any page, and then click on 'User's Graphics abilities'.

In the subcategory tree, Animation editors for the advanced level (ANI-3), I click and look at that page, and it seems somewhat hard to use. That's because when I look at the first two entries alone , I can see that there are either inactive or never were active editors. Of just the first two, one only made a single edit globally and that was to add the category to their userpage. What can be done to improve the chances that someone looking for an advanced animation editor would find assistance ? Is it ok to deactivate the categorisation without any other changes to the editors page, and leaving a note of expatiation just in case ? Naturally, only in cases where there is pretty much no chance they can assist with animations, like the first one or two examples. Penyulap 15:16, 4 November 2012 (UTC)

Where best to mention a semi-urgent deletion request for an image scheduled to appear soon on en's Main Page?

At Commons:Deletion requests/File:Bert and Ernie.jpg, I've nominated a photo of two lovely Sesame Street characters for deletion; as the image is due to appear on en's main page on 10th November to accompany the "Today's Featured Article", where's the best place to mention this discussion to get some early views on whether I'm right or wrong? It would be potentially awkward if en displayed a non-free image from Commons on its main page, and if it does need to be deleted the more opportunity the TFA folks have to think of an alternative, the better. On the other hand, if I'm wrong (which is entirely possible) then the sooner I'm told so, the better! Thanks, Bencherlite (talk) 21:40, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

Help needed with pic

G'day all, I am having issues with File:POW Camp Maribor.jpg, which I uploaded basically as it was. I subsequently cropped it and whilst it appears OK on the file page here, at [[2]] it still shows the uncropped version which looks crappy. Could someone give me some guidance on what I can do to fix it? Thanks, Peacemaker67 (talk) 09:07, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

Hello. Please do nothing to the image. In particular, please do not save more copies of the same version on the server. The image is fine. If you have problems displaying the current version in your browser, try purging your browser's cache. You can also try purging the server cache. Please read the FAQ at: "Commons:FAQ#Why is the old picture and not the new uploaded picture on my screen? (Or-- my thumbnail is wrong.)". If nothing works, just wait some reasonable time for any cache that might exist between the image and you to update. If there's an emergency for you to view the image as a thumbnail, try to display it in a different and previously uncached size of thumbnail. If you still can't display the image on your browser after a few days, then ask again and we'll see if anything more can be done to help you. But remember that there is no problem with the image. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:51, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

Two Qs, What Speedy Tags to Use?

Q1) What specific Speedy Deletion template should I use to remove an image file from Commons that is not used and not needed?

Q2) What specific Speedy Deletion template should I use to remove an image file that has a duplicate by another name on Commons?

Thank you. Ihardlythinkso (talk) 07:18, 8 November 2012 (UTC)

1. "Not used and not needed" would be COM:Scope issue. This is not a valid Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion, start a regular deletion request.
2. {{Duplicate}}. MKFI (talk) 08:56, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for those answers! (No wonder I couldn't find any Speedy i.d. that applied in my Q1!)
May I ask another question ... I have some files on Commons I would like to rename, but when I researched this I found that files can't be directly renamed but must be added under new name and old file deleted: [3]. But now I see clicking the Duplicate template you provided, that there is a Rename template, and the instructions there are to use Rename template and not add any duplicate files in order to perform the rename! (Is the EFAQ#RENAME info out of date? Someone should correct that!) I'd like to use the Rename template (simpler), should I just add it with the necessary parameters, to the Commons File's Description page at the top? Or ? Thank you! Ihardlythinkso (talk) 11:56, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
(Correction: I don't see a "Description page", just an Edit tab, with info including the description line. Is the Rename template put at the top of that info? Or please explain where to place the Rename template. Thank you.) Ihardlythinkso (talk) 12:04, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
What do you mean by EFAQ#RENAME? Commons:File renaming and COM:FAQ#MOVE both seem to be up to date. LX (talk, contribs) 12:05, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
Yes, you add the rename template at the top of the description page of the file to be renamed. The description page is the page that is in the "File:" namespace. (And the file is at the url beginning with "upload.wikimedia.org", which you reach when you click the thumnailed image displayed on the description page.) When you speak of a description page with no info, I'm guessing you may be confusing the websites of Wikimedia Commons and of en-Wikipedia. Make sure you are editing the description page at the source, here on Commons, not its mirrored page on en-Wikipedia. Also, after doing some searching and looking around, I'm guessing that when you say EFAQ info, you're talking about a section of a page on the en-Wikipedia, relating to the renaming process on that Wikipedia. That page is not on Commons and is not about Commons. For the help on Commons, please see the pages suggested by LX. And for a regular deletion request, you can use the link "Nominate for deletion" in the toolbox of the description page of the file. For more information, please see the page Commons:Deletion requests. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:02, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
Ok, EFAQ#RENAME where it says image files cannot be renamed, that applies to Wikipedia, and not to Commons? Okay.
I'm sorry, even after your description I don't understand how to get to the "description page". (When I click on the thumbnail, it brings up a page for the Commons file with tabs only "View", "Edit", and "View history". Here is an example: [4].)
When I click "Edit" tab, there is info there, and a description line, I'm not saying the description page has no info, I don't know how to get to the description page, so haven't viewed it, so haven't seen what's there.
This seems confusing (conflicting existences of rename on the two sites; finding the "description page"). (Is it just me? Perhaps I'm dense.) Thanks for further assist, clearly I need it! Ihardlythinkso (talk) 00:00, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
I took a guess and added a rename template to the above-linked page. (Did I do right?) Thank u. Ihardlythinkso (talk) 00:13, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
Yes, that is the description page. -- Asclepias (talk) 00:24, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
Ok, I get it. (It's called, but not labelled, that! Whew.) Thank you for answers. (The rename template is manually processed by admins on Commons site?) Thanks again. Ihardlythinkso (talk) 01:52, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
p.s. Isn't there any problem implementing renames in regard to old vs. new names for the duration of the time difference? (E.g. if the rename is done first then the article using image is in error; if the article is changed first, then the article is in error until rename is done.) How is that coordinated? Is there predictability re how quickly rename requests are processed? Are WP uses of old file name automatically redirected as a result of the rename function (i.e. a REDIRECT automatically created)? Thanks for input to understand. Ok, Ihardlythinkso (talk) 02:02, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
See Help:File redirect and history of File:Millennium 3D Chess init config.png. -- Asclepias (talk) 03:11, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. Have submitted some others, too. Will monitor. (Only a temporary "not found" condition when file names don't match. Better than making unnecessary redirects, me thinks.) Thanks again for all the help. Ihardlythinkso (talk) 08:01, 9 November 2012 (UTC)

Help: Uploading a Photograph

Hi, I am writing about an Architect in Wikipedia and I would like to upload his photo which is present in this museum to wikipedia commons. In the museums website concerning of the usage of photographs it is written; "Photographic reproduction of archival material is permitted in accordance with the laws concerning intellectual property and copyright." So, I wonder if I can upload this photo to commons without breaching the relevant rules. Thank you in advance Khadkhall (talk) 07:38, 8 November 2012 (UTC)

It is not possible to offer this photograph on Commons on the sole basis of the line you quoted above. As such, it may only mean that you can reproduce an item if it is old enough that the copyright has expired or if you use it under an equivalent of a fair use provision. Maybe more can be said if you tell what photo exactly and if you link to the full notice of the website. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:30, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for your response. Here is the photograph and the notice at the bottom of the museum page. And How old is old enough? This photo is at least 70 years old. Maybe it is best if I contact the museum then.Khadkhall (talk)
Unfortunately, the notice of the website does not contain anything that can be used as a permission. It seems to only refer to the ordinary rules of copyright law and it adds nothing more. As to how old is old enough for the copyright to have expired, the answer depends on the precise facts and informations that can be found about the particular photo. From the look of this photo and the biography of the architect, it might be estimated that the photo was taken approximately between 1921 and 1927. The necessary informations can be some of the following facts: the year of the first divulgation of the photo, the year of the first publication of the photo, the identity of the photographer who created the photo, the year of death of that photographer, etc. The website does not seem to mention those informations about this photo. As you say, you can contact the museum and perhaps they can tell you those informations. If not, you would need to do a research and try to find those informations from other sources. For example, if you can find a mention that the photo was published before 1923, then the situation is simple and the photo can be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. But if the photo was published after that, the situation is more complex and you will need to find more of the facts mentioned above. And after you find those facts, you will need to look at the copyright law of the country where the photo was first published, and calculate if the copyright on that photo had expired in 1996. If yes, it can probably be uploaded to Commons. If the country of first publication was Greece, the present copyright law of Greece can be found on this site. But the duration of the copyright in Greece was shorter than that before the law was changed, so you must find the previous versions of the law to calculate how it applied to this photo. As you can see, it can be complex. Anyway, the first step is to find the facts about the photo. After you found the facts, you can ask more help here or at Commons:Village pump/Copyright about how to calculate the duration of the copyright. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:55, 8 November 2012 (UTC)

--Tonic Bell (talk) 11:54, 9 November 2012 (UTC) Tonic Bell

This is a project for free content only. Please don't upload random non-free pictures that you found on the Internet. You need to read Commons:Project scope/Summary#Must be freely licensed or public domain to understand what kind of content you can upload here. LX (talk, contribs) 12:29, 9 November 2012 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Carthage Aqueduct.jpg

How can I put the requested licence information to this file? I scanned it myself and it's out of copyright. --Bibhai (talk) 13:39, 9 November 2012 (UTC)

What you need is a copyright tag that explains why the file is out of copyright. This case is quite straightforward, because the work in question is so old that the different copyright terms in different countries don't come into play. Both authors died more than 100 years ago, and it was published during their lifetime, so the tag to use is {{PD-old-100}}.
To add it, go to the file description page and click the edit tab. Remove the line that says Remove this line and insert a license instead and replace it with {{PD-old-100}}. Also remove the {{No license}} template.
I'd do it for you, but letting you go through the steps yourself is probably more instructive. Thanks for your contribution, LX (talk, contribs) 14:16, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
(edit conflict) In this case I think the correct tag is {{PD-old-100-1923}}. It means the engraving represented in your picture is in the public domain 1. in the United States because it was published before 1923 2. in countries where the copyright term is the author's life plus 100 years or less. Scanning in itself doesn't create a new copyright. I added the correct licence tag and switched to a more precise description template. Can you please make sure everything is OK? Header template and undocumented parameters

The Header template is not producing a proper rendering for my essays, mainly in that the first or only shortcut fails to appear on the screen, apparently because I need an undocumented valueless parameter named after an abbreviation of the page title, which implies that I need to add the abbreviated title somewhere else also, and I don't know where that is. This affects my new pages, Commons:Personality rights and Commons:Nonphotographs, video, and inaccuracies. On the other hand, I've seen a proper display with Commons:Photographs of identifiable people, which has the parameter "Lang-PhotoOfPeople" (without quote marks, an equals sign, or a value), and Commons:Administrators/De-adminship, which has the parameter "Lang-DESYSOP" (likewise without quote marks, an equals sign, or a value). I checked the documentation but it says nothing on point. How should I get the proper rendering? Thanks. use of nineteenth century image

I want to use the image of DuBay from this web site:

   http://www.pchswi.org/archives/bios/johndubay.html

Under permissions, the Portage County Historic Society grants permission to use for non-commercial purposes. The image was take while DuBay was alive, and he died in 1887. Can I upload it to Commons?

It depends when the image was first published. It does look like a type of image that would have been published a long time ago, but it is always better if you can find a source documenting an early publication. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:16, 9 November 2012 (UTC)

Removing an incorrect photo?

Hi - The photograph of a perched bird, under the 'Little Eagle' entry in Wikipedia, is incorrectly, a 'Whistling Kite.' The photograph of a bird in flight on the Little Eagle, page is correct. I don't know how to get the photo removed. The author of the photo is someone named Mribbans - but I don't know how to contact the person. How do I get this pic removed and a correct one added? Kind regards, Skyscanner12

Hi. It's very simple. Just edit the page of that article on the Wikipedia site by removing the title of that file on the line "image =". Also remove the description on the line "image_caption =". If you want, you can replace the image with the title of a correct image of a Little Eagle. if no other image is available, you can move the title of the image of the bird in flight, so that it will be displayed there. Also, if the description of the File:Little Eagle.jpg is incorrect, please edit its description page here on Commons and write the correct description. Also, if the bird is a Whistling Kite, remove the Category:Hieraaetus morphnoides from that description page and replace it with the Category:Haliastur sphenurus. Optionally, if you want to leave a message to the person who uploaded the file to explain the modification, his talk page is User talk:Mribbans, but apparently this was his only upload, so he may not watch his talk page. (N.B.: Email removed. It's not recommended to post it in public messages.) -- Asclepias (talk) 20:04, 9 November 2012 (UTC)

Two accounts: how to merge?

Hello. I've mistakenly created two accounts: User:Krisse and User:Krissen. Is there any way to merge them? If possible, I'd like the uploads and history from Krisse to be moved to Krissen, and (thereafter) the account User:Krisse to be deleted.

See Commons:Changing username, make an usurp request with rationale 2: "Both accounts are owned by the same person". MKFI (talk) 11:17, 10 November 2012 (UTC)
Ehm, note that it's technically not possible to merge and/or delete accounts. We can only rename accounts. Trijnsteltalk 16:46, 10 November 2012 (UTC)
But it's really easy just to have the respective user pages indicate that these are the same person, and to use only one in the future. I'm in a similar situation: before there were global logins I was "Jmabel (US)" on several non-English Wikipedias. - Jmabel ! talk 17:12, 10 November 2012 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Gu Jingzhou.jpg

This file from the site Baidu is, according to it's translated policies, a free copyright licence. Baidu is in it's licence policy like Wikipedia. The difference is that Baidu is especially for Chinese people. If I'm wrong the file should be deleated, but check the site on your own. In my opinion the file has a free licence.

--Bluesmagic8 (talk) 19:33, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

The reason the bot tagged it is that you didn't indicate a license. Does Baidu use some commonly known license? If not, where is Baidu's statement of licensing policy (in whatever language)? - Jmabel ! talk 02:14, 8 November 2012 (UTC)

SVG version for CC-BY-3.0 file

Hello,
I've uploaded this vector graphic file which is based on this JPG file. The JPG file uses this licensing {{self|GFDL|cc-by-3.0}}, so i want to ask what license i should add to the file i created, as, after all, it is based on someone else's file.
Deuterium (talk) 20:34, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

  • You have to add GFDL and at least CC-BY-SA, but it would probably be simplest to offer GFDL and the more generous CC-BY that was on the original (rather than the more restrictive CC-BY-SA), unless you have a strong reason to the contrary. - Jmabel ! talk 00:56, 12 November 2012 (UTC)
I would have thought one would "have to" add only one or other license, not both. If they choose to use the original work under the GFDL license then license the new work under GFDL. If they choose to use the original under the CC-BY license, then so long as they attribute the orginal, they can use any free license that we accept? I usually just copy the original licenses to my derivative work, especially if there is virtually no new "creative" content. --Tony Wills (talk) 18:16, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

--Seema rizvi (talk) 06:51, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

Filemoves broke usage links

Hi. I recently noticed something that clearly isn't a big problem but still bugs me just a little. There might be a clearer answer here. - It has to do with many files that I lately renamed (mostly fixing minor script issues) and all of them evidently had links each to one or more Wikipedia pages that were using them. – and now, after the renames are done, they all "lost" these links, ALTHOUGH in practice the pedia articles do still show the files, just encoded with the older name versions. This made me assume that in some cases the authomatic swap doesnot run on the Wikipedias. Here in Commons these names have become redirects. In many cases I did not send these redirections to deletion, and I there wonder if this has to do with what I described here.

I listed the "lost links" here, to make convenient any batch-action required, if I have any instruction from you here. Thanx Orrlingtalk 01:25, 10 November 2012 (UTC)

The rename was done using the Move-option from the collapsible multiple-choice list located to the left of the Search field at the top-right of each filepage; I don't know the other things you've mentioned Orrlingtalk 20:19, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

-- Asclepias (talk) 18:18, 18 November 2012 (UTC)

I just uploaded this image of an album cover. It is of a mixtape that was released by the artist for free online, along with the cover, so it is ineligable for copyright and in the public domain, right? Just wanted to make sure in the event I get warned for uploading copyrighted images. Howigotover92 (talk) 20:19, 18 November 2012 (UTC)

  • Offering something for free does not place it in the public domain. Nothing short of an explicit release into the public domain will do that, and even then there is some question whether you can really waive all intellectual property rights, which is why declarations like CC-0 exist. - Jmabel ! talk 00:26, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

- Jmabel ! talk 00:41, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

Well, if you took this photo yourself in 2011, maybe you should begin by explaining how it came to appear on an invitation to a conference in 2005 and why you uploaded such a very small version without the "exif" data. Once those little details are clarified, then you should choose a free license and add the corresponding template on the page. -- Asclepias (talk) 00:10, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

I understand the misunderstanding. I will then use another picture which has not been passed from hand to hand. I appreciate the help. Thank you.

If they won't agree to that, then they probably didn't mean to make it "free" in the sense we require. - Jmabel ! talk 01:03, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:The truth will make you free.jpg

This image "The truth will make you free.jpg" which I downloaded from "Word News" (wn.com) is an image from Nazi footage from 1945. It is commonly used in documentary movies, old and made by Nazi propagandists, thus I believe it is License free. Could help to clarify that? --Burham (talk) 03:05, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

  • That doesn't necessarily hold: someone else violating a copyright does not mean that the copyright no longer exists. In general, copyrights that were held by the German state in the Nazi era are held by its successor state today. - Jmabel ! talk 01:00, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

replacing an old image with more current one

Hi I am trying to replace an image on Tiger Army's wiki page with a more current file. I work in the office that manages the band. The image is a commons image. Philchamberlain (talk) 20:32, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

If by "wiki page" you mean an image in Wikipedia in some language (hard to be sure without a link), and if the picture you want to use is already on Commons, then that would be entirely a matter of which picture is referenced by Wikipedia in its article. Conversely, if you want to use a photo that is not already on Commons, then you have to start by uploading the image either to Wikipedia or to Commons (I recommend the latter). I also recommend that, assuming this is a professional photograph, you provide explicit permission as explained in COM:OTRS so that no one mistakes this for someone violating a copyright by giving out permissions they don't own.
If the situation is yet a third thing, then I'm afraid you'll have to be more specific; these seemed the two most likely from what you wrote. - Jmabel ! talk 00:59, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

How to delete wrong uploads?

Today, on 24 November 2012 :15:02, I uploaded: File:FRANK B. MCDONALD.jpg

After a few hours, at 20:43, I tried to upload a revised version of the file. I am sure I typed the correct filename from my computer. However, after the file was uploaded, the original 15:02 version appeared as the 20;43 thumbnail. So, I tried to upload the revised version again at 20:47, and the original 15:02 version appeared again as the 20:47 thumbnail, but the revised version appeared as the 20:43 thumbnail. Next, I tried to revert the 20:47 upload, but I just got another original at 20;48, and two revised versions at 20:43 and 20:47. This is the current situation.

At this point, because it seems pointless to continue, I am turning to the help desk. All I want to do is keep the original 15:02 version, but make one of the revised versions the current one.

Thanks for your help. Deer*lake (talk) 21:18, 24 November 2012 (UTC)

I just looked at the file again, and there are 3 revised versions along with the original. I realize now that I did not wait long enough for the uploads to get into the system. Please delete 2 of the 3 duplicate files. Thanks. Deer*lake (talk) 21:27, 24 November 2012 (UTC)
Once they are uploaded, they are on the server and there is no way to remove them. We could, in theory, hide them, but there is really no point to that: it wouldn't save any server space. - Jmabel ! talk 01:13, 25 November 2012 (UTC)
Also, what is your basis to say this is a NASA photo? I see that it is on their site, but it seems to be one of a set of photos related to an event, and there is no indication that these were taken by a NASA employee. On the other hand, if it is a NASA photo I'd strongly recommend replacing this with the higher-resolution version at http://science.gsfc.nasa.gov/662/boldt_album/slides/IMG_0870.html. - Jmabel ! talk 01:16, 25 November 2012 (UTC)
On the Boldt symposium page it states: "Pictures, contributed by Craig Markwardt". On this person's page it lists: "Employer: NASA".
I agree that the high resolution image is better than the current one. Under these circumstances, it might make sense to just delete the current file and upload a new high resolution version. If this makes sense, please go ahead and delete the existing image. When I see that it is gone, i will upload the new version under the same file name. Thanks again. Deer*lake (talk) 15:44, 25 November 2012 (UTC)
No need to delete, just upload the new version & edit the source accordingly. Also, you should definitely explain on the page, not just here, the basis for knowing that the pictures are by a NASA employee. - Jmabel ! talk
I just revised the file description and uploaded a higher resolution version. Deer*lake (talk) 16:13, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

hallo how do i send my pictures of the program on my page, so that when one reads about travel bound one can see pictures as well. they seem to be different from read only. i would like them to be part of the read page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Travelbound (talk • contribs)

  • I'm not sure quite what you are asking to do. For starters, does "my page" mean your user page here, or a page on a different site? And I'm not sure what you mean by "send my pictures of the program", but I'm guessing that you mean "display pictures that are on Commons". It looks like someone has already shown you on your talk page how to place Commons-hosted pictures on a page within Commmons (same thing works on Wikipedia & other WMF projects). Is that what you wanted, or are you asking something else? - Jmabel ! talk 06:38, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

A movie taken from our publication and posted at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Viral-gene-expression-regulation-ppat.1002591.s005.ogv lists an "Ding S" as a coauthor multiple times on the page. This person is not known to us and was not an author on the paper referenced.

--Bomzibar (talk) 19:11, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

English: I got messaged that the file mentioned above is not correctly licensed but there is the australian license and the date the photo was made (1943) which for my understanding would make it common free. I don't have a complete answer, but the template talkpage for PD-URAA (Template talk:PD-URAA) contains some information about reorganisating this template and its categorisation (see last thread about autocat). Maybe this is related to your problem - the timestamps of your upload and this change do match. GermanJoe (talk) 11:19, 23 November 2012 (UTC)

Asking a media source for free images

Surely there's a page on this, but I can't find it. The Las Vegas Sun has many photos of the MGM Grand fire of 1980, like these. How should I best approach them to get copies for Commons? We currently have nothing contemporary to the fire. But it's one thing to approach them for copies for Wikipedia, and other to ask them for copies under free licenses with notification sent to OTRS.--Prosfilaes (talk) 14:29, 22 November 2012 (UTC)

Using images from Wikimedia Commons in print

Hello,

I would like to use an image from Wikimedia Commons in print form for a magazine. It says the image is the work of a US Airforce airman or employee and has public domain status- am I free to reproduce it in the magazine? Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 78.33.10.162 (talk) 17:24, 22 November 2012‎ (UTC)

Yes, normally, if the image was correctly identified with a "public domain" tag to that effect, you are free to reproduce it in any way you want. However, some images may not be correctly tagged, so you should check the source and verify that it is actually the work of a US employee in the course of his duties. You may want to tell what file you are talking about exactly and people here can probably help you verify if it was correctly tagged. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:57, 22 November 2012 (UTC)

Delete large amount of files uploaded to Wikimedia Commons

A large amount of files has been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons from one source: http://fotopolska.eu/. I have a few problems with this upload.

  • 1. the name of the website is mentioned in the name of the uploaded files (e.g.: File:Wadowice, Stacja kolejowa Wadowice - fotopolska.eu (81159).jpg. Is this fotopolska-site a commercial site? If so, then this shouldn't be allowed in my opion.
  • 2. All of the files uploaded have one or more watermarks and they are difficult to remove. Why is it possible to upload pictures with watermarks in the first place and can they be deleted because of that?

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Citypeek (talk • contribs) 06:15, 23 November 2012 (UTC)

You could discuss the naming with the uploader and see what he has to say about why he names the files like that.
Only the watermarks are not a reason for deletion, if an image is useful. Think of it the same way as an image with bad contrast or color balance: it can be somewhat corrected and if the image is useful about a subject, it is better than no image.

How to effectively search Wikimedia Commons

I can not for the life of me figure out how to search Wikimedia Commons.

I need to find pictures under CC0 1.0 (or other non attribution), and while I can figure out how to get un-categorized results within that requirement, I can not figure out how to search for specific tags within that license.

Unfortunately a project I am currently working on does not allow attribution CC licenses because there is a potential problem of photographers who did not forsee their images being used in that context objecting to their name being used in a document of that context even if non endorsing attribution. The project lead simply does not want that scenario to come up, so CC0 1.0 is what I need (and I'm dedicated to trying to release several high quality photos of my own into that license as a thank you to those who have) but I just simply don't see any search interface to wikimedia commons that lets me specify that.

Am I just missing something? - unsigned

The search tool is not very specific. Also, it currently has a small bug and it doesn't always return the results on the first try. You may have to press the search button a second time before it works. You can look at Commons:Village pump/Copyright/Archive/2012/11#Help request: how can I search *only* public domain images and see if the two other suggestions there can work for you or you can try a Google search as suggested above. -- Asclepias (talk) 11:13, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

Hello, I uploaded the file mentioned above in order to illustrate an article on fr.wikipedia.org. This file is a screenshot, part of a video published under the "obsolete" CC-PD licence, and I was adviced to publish my file with a Cc-zero license. But it seemed strange to me, because I consider there are differences between these two licenses. And this is why I didn't put any license on this screenshot for the moment. Could someone please help me in order to make good choice?

Thanks a lot!

--KiwiNeko14 (talk) 00:13, 23 November 2012 (UTC)

(In case anyone asks, I'm replying in the native language of the questioner because it's much easier for me too.)
-- Asclepias (talk) 01:33, 23 November 2012 (UTC)

PNG is an unusual format for photographs anyhow, JPEG would be more common. Technically, both files appear to be perfectly normal and should work. I think the "+" in the file name might be problematic. The "+" character has a special meaning in URLs and some component in the thumbnailing process might have a problem with that. I have moved the JPG to File:DMURC Mens 8 plus BUCS 2010.jpg. You can move the PNG file too, if you think it is still needed. Someone who knows how to do that might want to file a bug report about this, too. A "+" in the file name should work, in my opinion. --rimshottalk 18:18, 24 November 2012 (UTC)
It is the "+", and the bug report already exists: bugzilla:42302. Lupo 18:21, 24 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for your help :) the "+" stands for a coxed rowing boat so if you could change the file name to just "File:DMURC Mens 8 BUCS 2010.jpg" that would be amazing. i am most grateful Joebrunton 21:17, 24 November 2012 (UTC)

--Sesay91 (talk) 20:39, 24 November 2012 (UTC) hi help desk, please advice; how do I resolve the copyright issues with regards to my personal photographs?

  1. On the specific question you asked: you need to provide an acceptable free license. You haven't indicated one.
  2. Please don't write long essays when you upload a photo. The description of the photo should be just that: a description of the photo. At most, you might add a few sentences providing necessary context. But a social/political essay is definitely out of scope for Commons.
  3. Assuming again that you did take the photo yourself, may I ask: what did you take it with? Isn't there a higher resolution available? This is very low resolution, more typical of something snagged off of someone else's web site.

Uploading photos of artworks

Can someone clarify the rules on uploading pictures of works of art please.

The specific instance I am querying is where I wish to upload a photo of a sculpture, created in 1947 by a famous artist. This is to feature on a Wikipedia page about the artist.

I own the sculpture and also took the photo.

I this case, is it permissible to upload and use the picture?

Gewitty (talk)

  • Ownership of the sculpture is irrelevant: intellectual property rights move completely separately from physical objects.
  • You don't mention what country, which would have a great bearing on the situation. Also, in most countries the death date of the sculptor would be relevant.

- Jmabel ! talk 17:40, 25 November 2012 (UTC)

Both the sculptor and the sculpture were/are located in the UK. The artist in question died in 1984.

Bitte, was mache ich falsch? Könnt Ihr bitte helfen? Danke und Grüße volker39

How to reactivate a deleted picture ?

Hello, I failed to upload pictures: they were deleted because of an unproper license. How can I find them again and give a proper license ?

Thanks for the answer. - unsigned

  • If you know the names where you uploaded them, they are still there, just not visible to the public. Even if you don't know the names, an administrator can work that out once you give your account name. Without that, though, I have no way to know what photos you are talking about. - Jmabel ! talk 16:02, 27 November 2012 (UTC)

Import from Thai Wikipedia

Hello,

I would like to use this image file from Thai Wikipedia in German Wikipedia. Is it possible to upload it to Commons? The Thai page asserts that it is under public domain, but maybe only under Thai law (?) I am not sure. --RJFF (talk) 20:06, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

It doesn't say who made the image, or when, so that we have no way to tell when it entered public domain in Thailand (if at all). --rimshottalk 23:08, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
So we cannot upload it to commons as the legal status is unclear, right? --RJFF (talk) 00:14, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
Precisely. - Jmabel ! talk 16:44, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Gaza rocket attacks.jpg

I copied the figure from the website specified. I have an email by the author saying that this figure is for free use, only requiring users to give credit to the author. What should I put in the license line? --Thank you

Nothing there complex enough to be copyrighted, I just marked it {{PD-ineligible}}. - Jmabel ! talk 01:43, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

National REGISTRY ACCESSION NUMBERS

WE HAVE SEVERAL PICTURES OF PLACES IN THE NATIONAL REGISTRY FOR WHICH WE CANNOT FIND THE ACCESSION NUMBER THAT IS REQUIRED. THESE PLACES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN PLACES THAT ARE TOO NEW AND THE USUAL PLACES WHERE ACCESSION NUMBERS CAN BE FOUND ARE NOT AVAILABLE. CAN SOMEONE TELL US WHERE WE CAN GET A LIST OF ACCESSION NUMBERS - PARTICULARLY OF SITES ADDED IN THE LAST 1 TO 2 YEARS. IF POSSIBLE SEND US AN EMAIL AT KLOTZPLATE@COMCAST.NET BECAUSE I AM NOT TOO GOOD AT FINDING MY WAY AROUND THE INTRICACIES OF WIKIMEDIA. THANK YOU, JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD

Monobook doesn't work

The monobook doesn't work correct since few hours, I think it's a problem of the new banner. The line with File-Talk-Edit-.... doesn't appear correct if a file or a category is shown. -- K@rl (talk) 21:54, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

You didn't give any indication of what license applies to this, nor why it would be available either as public domain or under a free license. Usually images from Facebook are not; furthermore, many Facebook users have no regard for intellectual property issues and upload materials to which they don't own the rights, so almost anything from Facebook is highly suspect unless you have a specific reason to believe it is the work of a particular individual. - Jmabel ! talk 18:18, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Apollo Color TV Article.jpg

This image is a scan of a UPI article about me in the NASA Apollo days. From what I can ascertain, UPI articles like this one can claim no copyright protection since the demise of United Press International in 1991. (UPI Photos and other images may be subject to copyright, but not articles). Here's a URL about UPI photos that may be of interest to Wikimedia: http://www.loc.gov/rr/print/res/151_upi.html

  • From what you've linked: "the Library’s legal office has advised the Division that… works published after 1963… may be protected even if they were not registered with the Copyright Office." This is from 1969. Why do you think that it is not copyrighted? Am I missing something? - Jmabel ! talk 00:39, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
  • By the way, questions that require a knowledge of copyright law are often better asked at Commons:Village pump/Copyright, which is where the people with that expertise "hang out". - Jmabel ! talk 00:41, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Help in uploading with GFDL

I have a photo by a photographer who would like to give GFDL permission to a photo if I upload it for him, for an article on the Meher Spiritual Center on Wikipedia. He is a professional photographer who does not mind the photo being duplicated as it is is a low resolution JPG and he says anyone can use it in this low quality. An example of this kind of license is at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kitty_davy.jpg Can someone tell me the procedure to do this? Dazedbythebell (talk) 16:52, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
