    Magnification in photomicrography is actually a very complex concept. People may not understand it. When I say that the magnification is 10x, you have to understand what 10x is about. This is related to the size of the camera sensor and requires special calculations to measure it. But in the end, this information does not give anything to the viewer, because it is not understood.   •  Strong oppose This image is technically poor and, more importantly, ethically wrong. Its crop is awkward, and its composition is lacking. You cannot feature an image of plastic bottles. This tool kills millions of animals each year; they are omnipresent, and I can't bear them. To say I'm disappointed is a huge understatement.   •  Oppose There is nothing ethically wrong with this image at all, I disagree with the above vote on that score. It should absolutely be possible to feature a picture of something that causes environmental destruction. Featuring something doesn't mean that we approve of it. It means that the photograph is good enough to provoke emotions in us, which might be curiosity, or wonder, or - just as easily - horror. A picture illustrating how much damage mankind is causing to the environment is absolutely worthy of FP if otherwise good quality and well composed. It might inspire people to become more interested in environmental protection.

In 2011, my dog choked on plastic and died. As a child, I was devastated. That is the fundamental reason I believe plastic bottles are unethical; I have seen plastics on beaches, in suburban areas in all of the nations I have visited, and even in the most remote locations. So, if I follow your logic, a picture of, say, individuals robbing from a bank will discourage theft? No, it won't. Humans speak and speak and speak, but they do not act. I was born in 1965. The 70s had some excellent music, but it was a horrible decade for New York City, which almost went bankrupt during the Fiscal Crisis and was dangerous, scary, violent and dirty, though affordable.     Actually, the picture is about PET bottles recycling. So, it is ethical and respectful attempt to avoid ill and ugly wasting of natural resources and minimizing ecology damage.   • I can actually read. In this sort of composition, it is immaterial where the photo was taken. If there was any relevance to Burkina Faso it would have to be in the motor bike, but the quality is so bad you can't make anything out. This image falls way short of QI.  Comment When I first saw this tree, I was so fascinated that I immediately decided to make it the focal point of the composition and place it right in the middle. Moving it left and right seemed to upset the balance. I have never seen tropical mangroves so isolated and growing on sand so prominently, so I believe centered composition works best here. That’s a conscious and deliberate choice. I forgot to mention, the tree is quite tall, about 9 metres (30 ft) high. --Argenberg (talk) 18:06, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The image is from 2009, and the assessment is from 2021. While not quite on par with modern high-resolution sensors coupled with premium glass, I think the level of detail is more than adequate for a 10MP resolution. I think the image quality is fine. The tree is very sharp. The corner sharpness is maybe a little bit less but still adequate. Not much noise and the image is properly processed with plausible colours. We shouldn't make FP quality standards so high that a jpeg from a compact system camera with a decent lens is precluded. I still think this is one of the best FPs I have ever nominated even though the quality is worse than this picture. Composition and subject are more important.   •  Oppose Sorry. Good image quality but I miss outstanding light conditions or an outstanding composition. I think the bottom crop is too tight and the lighthouse is placed too centrally, it'd be better to place it a third of the way into the frame. I like the clouds in the background and I think it's a good QI. FP lighthouse pictures: have a look at this where you have the nice warm sunset lighting and the lighthouse is placed at a more satisfying point in the frame. Or, this would be an example of how to make it work with duller/greyer lighting because here you have the reflections and the choppy waves to add something to the composition.   •  Info Per Commons:Village pump#Guidance re possible copyleft trolling, Diliff has an extensive history of using Commons for copyleft trolling (at least 12 incidents mentioned so far). He has used the companies Pixsy and Fossick to aggressively demand money from anyone using his images without proper attribution (even after they correct the attribution). This trolling even led to someone closing their website and business after using one of Diliff's photos from Wikipedia. Diliff does not respond to inquiries about these monetary demands on-wiki or questions about how to properly attribute him, likely because shaking people down for money doesn't look good in public. Copyleft trolling has become a major problem for Commons and the FUD it creates is a major reason why people do not reuse images from Commons or trust Creative Commons licenses. Copyleft trolling is toxic to our projects and our mission and should not be tolerated. At the very least, we should not be featuring Diliff's images, as this facilitates Diliff's copyleft trolling and exploitation of our project. It also endangers our reusers and leads to bad PR for Commons like this Reddit thread. And since Diliff's trolling has created uncertainty about the freedom to re-use these images without meeting onerous conditions (such as including the entire text of the license),[2] I would contend that these images no longer meet the featured picture criteria.   • Just to clarify that when you say 'onerous conditions such as the entire text of the license', this is not correct. The talk page message you link to there is from someone who has got the wrong idea. The image pages for this author's work are quite clear that the single line '"Photo by DAVID ILIFF.   • It is telling that they have provided no evidence to the people on the receiving end of these claims that they are acting on Mr Iliff's behalf, though. Hence them using his user page to attempt to contact him directly.
  • The claims are of course legally unenforceable. This website discusses the questionable business model of this company in more detail. Quote: 'But it may be illegal for Pixsy to send a threatening letter that claims, without a reasonable basis, that they represent someone who has a registered copyright on the image. In the United States, the image must be registered with the U.S. Copyright Office in order to sue for damages. Some people threatened by Pixsy have said that the company failed, after repeated requests, to produce the supposed copyright for the image. One person said that Pixsy provided them with a “[b]atch copyright registration of 750 images,” but the “image in question” was “neither listed or shown...Some people say that Pixsy has gone away after they demanded proof that the image was subject to a registered copyright.'
  • Without actual evidence of his involvement in these claims, and with evidence of the unscrupulous tactics of this website, I am inclined to believe that Mr Iliff, who was a user in good standing in this community for many years, is unlikely to be the party at fault here. The girls in the photograph were captured spontaneously by the Sofiane from the side of the road, and there are alternative versions available (image 1, image 2), I personally prefer this one.   • Thanks for the notification. Still overprocessed in my view. Just a different processing, but the same kind of modification, with excessive contrasts. The shades in gray scale are not original. More worryingly, this format is not faithful to the author's choice. While the original photograph was almost a square, here it is a rectangle. And when the author decided to grant a large space below the feet, as well as an infinity sky (giving the impression that the child is small in the environment), here the current crop seems to be altering this management of the space.     I have no issue with the other two opposes, but yours underestimates the challenges of tortoise photography. These animals have no ground clearance so the only chance of a clear shot is on a hard surface like a rock or man-made path. Look on Google. This is not their natural habitat; they cross paths as quickly as they can. They are not that slow moving and when you are close-up and trying to get to tortoise-eye-level to get a good PoV, they do not stay in frame for very long. I have the same feelings as you. The landscape looks alien to me too, like a scene from another planet. In addition to the big tower rock, smaller upcrusts and outcrops on the right, fragmented snow, atmospheric mist and overcast sky add to the impression. This is the bed of an ancient glacier that contracted with global warming, but will regain in the next global cooling phase. Here is a closer look at the wall of the glacier bed: File:Karachay-Cherkessia, Caucasus Mountains, Софийские ледники и водопады, Карачаево-Черкесия.jpg The waterfalls at the terminus are 120 m high, and the tower rock you mentioned is also huge, its prominence is probably around 300 m. This whole giant glacier floor will one day be covered with moving ice again, potentially spilling ice into the valley below. It will then look more earthly than today.   • But if you look at photos from the same period here on Commons, for example Category:19th-century photographs of France in the Cleveland Museum of Art where this comes from, there is a mix of with or without vignetting. In those days, just like today, the quality of the photo depended a lot on the quality of the camera. It seems that this photographer had a slightly inferior camera that produced vignetting. If you look at old photos, they are sometimes cut as circles or ovals to remove some of this effect, as it was often inevitable. However, the vignetting also matched the practice of doing oval paintings, especially portraits that predated photography (some examples), so it was sometimes a desired effect. Vignetting has a long history of being a way of emphasizing a subject in paintings (Goya liked it a lot and even old Doré comes to mind), as well as photos, and still is.   • In this case it looks like the technical and artistic reasons coincided, so I tried to cover both to answer you question as thoroughly as possible. The more in-depth technical part of vignetting is that for old cameras, it occurs when the diameter of the hole made by the iris in the lens approaches the thickness of the material the iris is made of. So a small iris hole (high f-number) for bright light and an iris made from thick material will give you more vignetting. Old cameras didn't have the thin sophisticated iris blades we have now, sometimes it was just a hole in a plate for the light to pass through. In simple terms you could say that the vignetting is the "shadow" of the hole's wall when the light passes through it. Imperfect lenses also added to this, and they hadn't discovered petal lens hoods yet. But people liked this, and if the effect wasn't strong enough naturally, it could also be added in the darkroom by the photographer. The reason why I asked Wilfredor to remove it was simply because I think we owe it to readers and the people re-using our photos to be met with a civilized tone when they view our best pictures. The bitter aftermath from recent licensing discussions should not spill over to the more "official" part of Commons. Imagine an 8 year-old looking for a picture of an old Canadian house for their school project and be met with that wording. Personally and IRL, I swear a lot, in several languages (you should hear me in Spanish!), but there is a time and place for everything. This is not about how much crude language we editors are comfortable with, but how we present Commons to the rest of the world. I think we could add FPs to the quote. ;-) Regarding the template, since there is an article about it, I guess someone thought it was a good joke to create the template.     This house brings back good memories for me. It's located in a secluded area of a rural zone on the island of Orleans, Quebec. A picturesque place surrounded by gardens of vegetables and fruits around the house, and close by, a stable with goats, egg-laying hens, and further away, a wheat plantation with a beautiful old barn that, in the afternoon light, seemed as if the roof was honey-colored. Nearby, a small stream flows. My wife and I went to this place to spend much of her pregnancy there, which brought her peace and tranquility, although soon after came the most difficult event of my life: the loss of our baby at 4 months of gestation, which among other things ended our years-long relationship. I mention all this because I took a photo in front of that house where she was sitting in an old rocking chair, holding her belly with a smile and her eyes closed—probably the most beautiful featured image I ever took, but I had to delete it because keeping it would be torture. Moreover, she and I are no longer together. I know this has nothing to do with this photo but I wanted to provide some context. Behind every photo, there's an additional story.     I remember that day was very windy. I had been waiting for the eclipse for several days, continuously checking the time. With 20 minutes to go before the eclipse started, I saw people gathering to watch it from my building; some even lacked proper protection. From my vantage point, I spotted a space near these people that was large enough for my tripod. I had a special graduated filter for the eclipse, but when I tried to fit it on my camera, it didn't fit, so I had to use tape to secure the filter to the lens. I used a 100-400mm Z nikon lens with a 2X extender, effectively giving me 800mm on a full-frame format, which made the setup extremely heavy. Despite the limited time, I grabbed my camera and went down to set up on a small mound. The wind was ridiculously strong, so I opted to place metal stakes in each tripod leg to keep it from flying away and added a counterweight to the center to minimize vibration, recalling that Quebec City is often windy due to its proximity to the Saint Lawrence River. After setting up the camera and tripod, I had to keep adjusting it directly towards the sun to account for the movements of the Earth, the Moon, and the Sun. I couldn’t just leave the camera pointed and shoot; I had to periodically recenter the Moon and the Sun in my shots. The photos were taken with a manual setting to minimize exposure during the partial eclipse, capturing significant phases at regular intervals. Later, I developed the images in Lightroom, applying only lens correction and chromatic aberration adjustments, which I didn't really notice. Poco is right. There is something fishy going on here. If you reduce the intensity (only!) of the image, it looks to me like the top row is the same as the bottom row, only reversed. I opened this in Photoshop and just toggled the levels (ctrl+L) to darker. How is this Wilfredor? 'Pinging' previous voters about this, Yann, ★, The Cosmonaut, Radomianin, SHB2000, Aristeas, Wolverine XI. In this version I have toggled the levels (ctrl+L) to an extreme. In that version there are some very small differences between the two rows; perhaps only half of the eclipse was actually photographed and that series used for both rows. You need to do some serious thinking about how you make and present photos on this forum.
