Images from the Geograph Deutschland project

Hi. Is it possible to upload all Geograph Deutschland images since the last upload? The category [Category:Images from the Geograph Deutschland project] already exists. The Geograph Deutschland site contains many pictures which are useful for Wikipedia, all of them were uploaded under the CC BY-SA 2.0 licence. Wikidata links

Former and current regrettable neglecting of Wikimedia Commons in phase I of Wikidata causes the consistency more difficult to achieve. Because any fully-fledged solution is not foreseeable yet, we should work on comparation and completion of provisional interproject links. To do:

• Go through all category pages and add the template(s) {{On Wikidata|<Qnumber>}} for all interwiki links to both Wikipedia articles and categories.
• Export {{On Wikidata|<Qnumber>}} links as Property:P373 to the linked Wikidata items.
• Go through all Wikidata items which contains the property Property:P373 and add the item number with the {{On Wikidata|<Qnumber>}} template to the linked Commons category.
• Go through all Commons category pages which contain {{On Wikidata|<Qnumber>}} template and generate (update) the interwiki links. (Priority/concourse rules for multiple links should be approved previously.)

As soon as the direct connection between Commons and Wikidata will be activated, some of the steps will become redundant. --ŠJů (talk) 17:10, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

(Permanent) Maintenance Bot

In an ideal world I would have asked to setup a permanent maintenance Bot at Labs with multiple maintainers but it would be sufficient if we'd have at least one locally-operated Bot.

• I have not seen a Bot fixing double redirects in at least file and gallery namespaces for a long time.
• User:SchlurcherBot is currently inactive for most of the time because the operator has to rely on expensive mobile internet for some time so we need at least one Bot taking-over this important work. It should not be a problem to have two Bots doing this work if Schlurcher comes back online again.
• I have recently found some galleries or image pages which used localized file prefixes (like Datei:) within gallery tags, may be worth checking. Although some may have come from Bot moves and missed by the Bot-move cleanup Bots.

I can try for those:

• Any other namespaces? Hazard-SJ can do better in that since he can work with databases.
• Would be hard to code.
• Is there a list of File in other languages other than English? And is there an example for testing?

Removing WLM category

Archive Bot User:MiszaBot down since a week

Probably due to the password issue this archival Bot is down and the operator has not been reached by mail yet. Any option for a temporary takeover (running several hours offset from the usual archival time of the original)? Or anyone knowing a better way to contact him? Always better to have a Bot in Reserve if the main Bot fails. Also the maintainer is currently more or less inactive and does not show interest or does not have time to update the Bot. He may not be able/willing to migrate it to Labs (assuming it runs on Toolserver). --Denniss (talk) 09:27, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

I offered to take this over on the English Wikipedia, some time ago, though other people jumped in on the task. However, I control a version of this on Wikidata, and I'm willing to take this up here as well. I noticed that FSV (Fastily's unflagged bot account) did some archiving, based on this task since MiszaBot has gone down, so I'm not sure if he'd like the task (I'll leave him a note, and if he does plan to take it up he'd need to use a account with a bot flag to access the nominornewtalk right), but if not, I'm still willing.  Hazard SJ  04:33, 18 October 2013 (UTC)

Encoding error in bot uploads

There was an encoding issue in the NARA upload script that led "&" characters, which are allowed in file names, to be replaced with "^amp,". Example: File:Trackwomen, 1943. Baltimore ^amp, Ohio Railroad Company - NARA - 522888.tif. Would anyone be able to detect and batch-rename these? There may be a few hundred in Category:Media contributed by the National Archives and Records Administration, based on a wild guess. Dominic (talk) 22:01, 18 October 2013 (UTC)

I'd be happy to take a look at this over the weekend. I have a batch renaming script I can tweak and it would be pretty quick to run through the category. Unvisible controll characters in category tags

When copying the category name and creating the category tag, an unvisible controll character at the bottom of the tag is often inadvertently intruded (see an example). (Recently identified as char code 8206 (a Left-to-right mark), Substitute character, U+200E, see this (19 June 2012) and this (7 May 2013) report.) Such error is not visible for users and the page is really displayed in the category but some scripts or bots are not able to deal with such category tags (e.g. Cat-a-lot is not able to remove or change such a category tag and give a message "The following pages were skipped, because the old category could not be found:…"). We need:

• to check and clean all category tags on all pages

Picture of the Day to ko.wiki

Hello, I'm from Korean Wikipedia and now I'm admin in this Wikipedia. In our community, we use same picture as COM:POTD to ko:위키백과:오늘의 그림. However, the bot which copies English/Korean caption from Template:Potd is often inactive these days. Can somebody please operate a bot that copies the picture and English & Korean caption to Korean Wikipedia every month?

For example in April, 2024:

• Picture of Template:Potd/2024-4 should be placed at ko:위키백과:오늘의 그림/2024년 4월/그림.
• Korean caption of Template:Potd/2024-4 should be placed at ko:위키백과:오늘의 그림/2024년 4월/한국어.
• English caption of Template:Potd/2024-4 should be placed at ko:위키백과:오늘의 그림/2024년 4월/영어.

Inside each sub-document, there are {{오늘의 그림 목록}}. But don't edit this template to add picture and caption for each month - just change the document that I've mentioned above and you can see there are d1~d31 variable for each day. Tab characters in monument templates

When checking wrong monument identifiers in {{Cultural Heritage Czech Republic}} with [1], i found an often error that many users copied any white character (probably tab character) into the parameter of the monument template and some tools are not able to recognize the identifier. Could somebody permanently check all monument templates in order to remove all unwanted white characters? In case of the Czech template, also internal spaces (especially " / " replace with "/") and all letters should be removed (the ID should contain only digits, "/" and "-". Massive reading of Dutch words: Dutch pronuciation

I'm busy reading ALL the dutch words of the dutch Wiktionary

- the reading is much simplified with help of the shtooka program. - the uploading is much simplified with help of the Commonist program.

There are two quit time consuming tasks left over wich maby could be simplified by an automated procedure / Bot

• a lot of the dutch words start with (but not all)

question: is there an easy way to fill ALL the dutch words with '{{audio|nl-{{pn}}.ogg|{{pn}}}}'')

most of the words in Dutch pronunciation have this sentence: [[Category:Dutch pronunciation|aagje]] (aagje is the name of the word) for a good ordering of the list Dutch pronunciation it is neccessary to complete the category with |(name of the word) The file name is: File:Nl-xxxxx.ogg xxxxx is the name of the word.

cat removal

An errornous script run placed ~1400 images in Category:CC-BY-SA-2.0 and Category:Flickr images reviewed by File Upload Bot (Magnus Manske) (many of them in both). Those cats are to be placed by templates only so they should be removed. The content of Category:Pages using Information template with incorrect parameter could be reduced from > 10,000 to currently 1,500, mostly by (semi)automated fixes. To help fixing the remaining errors, a statistical evaluation of the parameters causing the errors would be of great benefit. Possible Rijksmonument

Somebody partialy removed the Possible Rijksmonument template, this is a temporary template helping with identification of the image. If the template is partially removed this probably means that the image is not of a rijksmonument, the whole template should be removed in that case. Best practice question, how to filter by licence

I'm pulling a report for someone of files within a category tree by licence type (PD and CC0 - i.e. not needing attribution). I have solved this by using pywikipedia to recursively go down the tree then find hidden categories for each image page (the standard call, page.categories(), does not do this as it seems to just sniff the current html page rather than pull on transclusions, so I use in the API for that bit) but I am not terribly happy about how I choose which categories match a licence type. I'm using a regular expression to look for "PD" and "CC-Zero" in the hidden category names.

I know that others have bots that look at licence problems, so is there some more reliable or at least efficient way of asking the API or pywikipediabot for the types of licence(s) that apply to sets of Image pages? Having this as a simple function built into pywikipedia would be pretty useful. N.b. "licence" is how UK folks spell "license". --Fæ (talk) 12:22, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

Each license template uses one of several style layout templates like Template:CC-Layout (see Template:Style formatting license template/doc for full list). So if you want to find all files using PD licenses in lets say Category:Images_uploaded_by_Fæ you can use this CatScan2 query. Also all style layout templates transclude an empty tag template Template:License template tag so to find all files in Category:Images_uploaded_by_Fæ that do not have a license on can use this CatScan2 query. Thanks for the suggestions. Every time I try the catscan query I get "Fatal error" and I'm not sure how this actually can be limited to all types of PD licence plus CC-Zero. My query sniffing through the licences under Category:Arts and Crafts Movement has hit regression problems (infinite loops) about 5 times now, I don't know of an easy fix for this apart from deleting the self-referencing or other more complex child being a parent possibilities by hand each time they cause my script to breakdown. Supposedly this is with quite limited recursion being set at just 2 levels (subcategoriesList(recurse=2)). --Fæ (talk) 13:59, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

I only use CatScan2 and it is MUCH better after moving to the tool labs. However some of the queries can get expensive and the tool times-out before returning anything or the number of the outputs is too large. For example I can not search for files missing {{License template tag}}, the query just times out. But I can use CatScan2 for files using {{Information}} but not using {{License template tag}} which were uploaded within the last month. License review for Bugwood network uploads?

The Bugwood network allows authors to change the license, currently this lead to six DRs - mostly caused by a missing automatism for license review.

Would it be possible for a bot herder to automagically review Bugwood licenses by parsing the source description page [similar to the Flickr review]? As the Bugwood network uses multiple domains (bugwood.org, insectimages.org, forestryimages.org - possibly more) it is problematic to identify all images, one starting point could be Category:Bugwood Network image sources; though not every uploader (me included...) uses the source template.

You may want to use a template like {{Bugwood licence pending review|<date>}} which could put these in a backlog category and a bot regularly sniffs through and adds an approved/not approved result or corrects the licence template after looking carefully at the licence on the source website. I think those are a cross-section of the general use cases, drop a line if you need more (better?) requirements.

Commons:Infoboxes templates like {{Book}}, {{Photograph}} or {{Artwork}} are not required to be used only by books, photographs and artworks; although they were created with those types of objects in mind. It is OK to use them for other types of objects, as long as the fields make sense. It is a different story with license templates: If you use {{PD-scan}} you should only add them to scans of books and other published material. {{PD-Art}} should only be used with 2D artworks which are in PD. {{Self}} should be only used for the works you are the author of. --Jarekt (talk) 16:49, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

There are several directories like:

• Category:Pages using Information template with incorrect parameter
• Category:Pages using Information template with syntax errors
• Category:Pages using Artwork template with incorrect parameter

that could use some bots to correct the images. So far I was trying to identify some type of issue, develop regexp replacement pattern, find all the files that match the pattern and test the replacement to make sure there will be no bad corrections and do the replacements. IMO the biggest issue for bots is that how the regex knows what part of the content in template {{Information}} or {{Artwork}} without all the other templates (maybe use a parser?). I agree, In AWB I like to use for such tasks there is no good way to tell if you are in the {{Information}} template or in the "history" section where original metadata as it was on some Wikipedia is copied. Its also about finding pattern. Uploads by the same user may be fixed in the same (automated) way. There also several parameters that are used in many files, such as “Title” in animal/plant pictures, or errors caused by pipes in the Permission parameter (example). --Leyo 11:03, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

Bad dates and Flickr metadata

Many people, even today, think that the "date" field in the upload form is the date that they upload the picture, and not the date that the picture was created. If no EXIF or similar metadata is available, this can do some horrible things to provenance and contribute to license washing.

For pictures that come from Flickr, we are fortunate enough to have access to the original metadata (at least, for the pictures that are still up). I've fixed a few files by hand, but there are thousands of files on Commons that are sourced to Flickr. I propose that a bot verify all Flickr-sourced photos (even those whose licensing has already been verified) and compare their Commons-listed creation date with the creation date mentioned on Flickr, and correct the former to match with the latter. I recently came across a user, not an OTRS team member, who appears to be tagging his uploads with {{PermissionOTRS}} using fake ticket numbers. Would it be useful to have a bot compare additions to http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:RecentChanges&tagfilter=OTRS+permission+added+by+non-OTRS+member against OTRS ticket numbers to confirm their legitimacy? Or, more broadly, to review for accuracy all current files and future additions in the category Category:Items with OTRS permission confirmed and flag those with problems, either with a problem tag or by placing them in Category:Items with incorrect OTRS ticket ID? --Rrburke (talk) 14:46, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

By the way, in case you mean User:Virginia Gentilini, she was doing exactly as she was advised. The email exchange under the ticket number she is using, asks her to add {{PermissionOTRS}} by herself. At some point during a rewrite of {{PermissionOTRS}} I was trying to flag images with bad OTRS ID's and put them in Category:Items with incorrect OTRS ticket ID. However that process was (and still is) based on the range of the numbers used. I would also like to convert all the files using "ticket" parameter to "id" parameter, which would simplify the template and allow better error checking. I have never figured out how to access OTRS database by a bot (but i also did not try too hard). One of the complicating factors is that OTRS is split into large number of little compartments (last time I checked) and you need to ask for access to each one and without such access you can not check validity of the ticket. Duplicate flickrreview tags

Is it technically possible to detect images with multiple Flickrreview templates ? The templates in question are User:FlickreviewR/reviewed-pass and Flickrreview, either one of them twice or both once. A problem may be that they are not just as template but with multiple arguments afterwards. Fix convert

Template:Convert (for converting, for example, from kilograms to pounds) was recently changed to use the new Module:Convert. I periodically check the error categories and fix them, but the following should be done by AWB.

Most pages in Category:Convert invalid options need this fix:

• In template {{convert|...}} change "abbrev=on" to "abbr=on".

The "abbr=on" option means that both input and output units are abbreviated—shown as symbols. If there are any issues that can't be easily resolved when that's done, I'll fix them in due course. Johnuniq (talk) 02:37, 13 December 2013 (UTC)

The case Commons:Bots/Work requests/Archive 9#Unvisible controll characters in category tags seems to be not resolved yet. I met several remaining occurences in Category:Brick castles in Category:Brick castles in Iran:

Replacing description page content with content of the description page of a corresponding file

There's a set of mushroom drawings for which I've uploaded better versions as new files. Copying over the content of the description page from the corresponding old file to the new one would likely be all I need to catch it from there. The old files are named Coloured Figures of English Fungi or Mushrooms - t. 1.png through to number 438 with numbers 409, 423, 427, and 437 missing. The new ones bear the exactly same file name with the ending changed from .png to .jpg. (I've found somebody who agreed to do this back in 2011 when the uploads happened but somehow it never happened.)--Natr (talk) 02:27, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

Opportunities to add images

Hi, I've been running some newbie training events, and one of my more popular exercises is adding images to articles. But I need lists of articles which lack images but for which we have possible images. There is a convoluted query system for finding such opportunities, but for newbies we need a list. I'm hoping to get w:Wikipedia:Articles_with UK_Geocodes but_without_images refreshed for EN wiki, but could anyone here produce lists of:

1. Wikipedia articles which lack images but which have a version in another language which does have a Wikimedia Commons image by Wikipedia Language. This would look similar to w:Wikipedia:Articles_with_UK_Geocodes_but_without_images but with a second column for the article that does have an image.
2. Wikipedia articles which lack images but which have a Wikimedia Commons category by Wikipedia Language. This would look similar to w:Wikipedia:Articles_with_UK_Geocodes_but_without_images but with a second column for the Wikimedia Commons category.
3. Wikipedia articles which lack images but where we a Wikimedia Commons image within 100 metres according to the geocodes of the article and the image by Wikipedia Language. This would look similar to w:Wikipedia:Articles_with_UK_Geocodes_but_without_images but with a second column for the Wikimedia Commons image(s).

Notifying uploaders of files in a category

I did not find a handy way for compiling a list of files uploaded by a user that are in a specific category. If e.g. several files of an active user are in a maintenance category such as Category:Pages using Information template with incorrect parameter, the user is likely willing to fix them, but a list of these files needs to be provided. Does anyone have a bot that is able to compile such lists and possibly also to post them on the respective user talk page? 3. Select "prepend text, notify uploader"
4. Do not fill in any text but the message to the uploader

There are, however, also a few drawbacks in this method: Among the many uploaders of files in this category there are many inactive users or ones with just one file; due to the large number of files in this category, VFC gets slow (unresponsive script warnings); files in a subcategory cannot be included. Hi, I am currently trying to categorize uncategorized templates and found in Special:UncategorizedTemplates thousends of templates named Australian2011CensusMaps/bcpfieldcat/<number>. I've created Category:Australian 2011 Census map templates for them an started to edit manually each template. But that are realy far too much for manual edits (more then 7000). I figure out, not all Modt files have the Media of the day template. It looks like it was added by hand and often nobody add it. @Zhuyifei1999: I don't know which process you did use, but I've noticed that your bot missed some images, e.g. in Category:Léopold-Émile Reutlinger and subcategories, some images don't have the Creator template, and they are not tagged with this category. I think it is because the author is noted as Léopold Reutlinger, and not as Léopold-Émile Reutlinger. Repair of Category:Trams in Prague

In relation to this discussion and this user problem, I request for:

• Restoration of numeral sort keys of the subcategory Category:Trams in Prague by registration number. The subcategories in format Category:Tram NNNN (Prague) should have a sort key in format [[Category:Trams in Prague by registration number|NNNN]]. This fix should be uncontroversial, I suppose no objections even from the discussed user.

• Fix the overcategorization of hunderds images. This fix should wait until user problem notice (or the CfD discussion) is decided in this point. however, the technical solution can be prepared meanwhile.
  • Images which are included in at least one direct subcategory of Category:Tatra KT8D5 in Prague by registration number‎ should be removed from Category:Tatra KT8D5 in Prague
  • Images which are included in at least one direct subcategory of Category:Tatra RT6N1 in Prague by registration number‎ should be removed from Category:Tatra RT6N1 in Prague

Misused {{Unknown}}

I noticed a file page where the template {{Unknown}} were misused as a language template for unknown language. Of course, the text from the parameter is not displayed. The image was uploaded by UploadWizard, maybe it's enabled by a bug of UploadWizard. Could you search for all cases where the template {{Unknown}} is used with parameter "1=" with inappropriate value and correct them? --ŠJů (talk) 21:30, 18 January 2014 (UTC)
