Images from the Travelers in the Middle East Archive category statistics and categorization

I batch uploaded over 2,000 images of Travelers in the Middle East Archive and added temporary categories to each image. Could someone do a statistics page to show what the categories are and how many images are in each? Something like this] (however since the temp categories do not have "Images from the Travelers in the Middle East Archive" as prefix only a bot can look through the images and see the categories available and how many images are in each). Please have it under four sections: author, subject, date and source. On each image the first category is the author, the second is the subject and the third is the date. The source ( original book of the image) is not in the categories, however, the bot should add it as a category in the file and retrieve it from the second parameter of the source template while clipping the page number. Like in File:A Coptic woman of the Poorer Class. (1918) - TIMEA.jpg it should add "Leeder, S.H. "Modern Sons of the Pharaohs". Hodder and Stoughton: London, 1918" ( without ".p 320." or " From:" ) as a category and list it in the statistics page. This would help in the categorization a lot.--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 12:50, 17 September 2010 (UTC)

Redirect Category:French translators to Category:Translators from France (etc.)

This facilitates copy-and-paste of categories from en.wp.  Docu  at 13:57, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

More candidates: Redirect red links on Special:Categories/People_from from "Category:People from foo" to existing "People of foo" categories.  Docu  at 09:20, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

User:BotMultichillT cleanup (Latin names from Starr batch upload)

A series of files from the Starr batch include plant names instead of animals or landscape that are featured. This should be renamed. A simple solution would be to remove the plant name and just leave the batch name and image id. See Commons_talk:File_renaming#Category:Phoebastria_immutabilis_(head) for a sample. This might concern up to 20,000 files. -- User:Docu at 18:52, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

A bot rename is a bad idea because it violates the rename policy (Commons:File_renaming#What_files_should_be_renamed?) and such a botrun would probably get bot blocked. Rename the files one by one if there is some with a problem. --MGA73 (talk) 14:02, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
How does it violate rename policy? Naming a picture of a bird with a plant name is misleading. Most people don't notice as the name is in latin, but it's still misleading.
Such a rename may violate bot policy if the bot wasn't approved before, but nobody suggests to run it without prior approval. Bot policy does require the operator of the uploading bot to help repair the damage he made. -  Docu  at 04:47, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
I think Docu's idea is fine. I hardly ever encourage renames, but these are a perfect example of what should be renamed. It's like naming a picture of a duck something like "File:Pineapple.jpg". Actually, it's worse because the common person will think that the name's simply the scientific name for that species. It's also bad for searching. Rocket000 (talk) 07:30, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
First, I think that names like "File:Starr 080602-5333.jpg" is meaningless. We should avoid names like that - see rename rule # 2. Therefore I feel that renaming to such names would be wrong.
Second, as I said Renaming is fine if a duck is called a Pineapple but if the image shows a Pineapple then it would be wrong to rename. Docu suggest to rename ALL files bot those with a right name and those with a wrong name. I can not see that any of the 6 reasons for renaming would allow renaming of a file with a right name. Which rule do you thing allow such a rename? --MGA73 (talk) 20:11, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
I didn't suggest to rename ALL files, but I suggested that this may concern up to 20000 files. Specifically about Phoebastria immutabilis are there files you think shouldn't be renamed? Why do you think naming these files "pineapple" is of any help? From the search results linked above, are there groups of files you think should be excluded (besides files that were already renamed manually). What is your proposal to fix this problem?  Docu  at 04:44, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
Meaningless names are much better than misleading names that mess up search results. I disagree that names must be descriptive (it's just a name), but I do think names shouldn't be wrong. Rocket000 (talk) 06:37, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
A name that identifies the collection, the image id in the collection and the date a picture was taken isn't meaningless.  Docu  at 06:41, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
I know but MGA73 called them that so I went along with it as it doesn't matter. Meaningfulness is relative. Almost everything not in English is meaningless to me. What may appear to you as a random string of numbers/letters could be meaning to some person or group that have devised their own naming system. I think that shorter names (like in this case) would be better and easier to use. Rocket000 (talk) 01:12, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
Ok, I thought you meant "meaningless" in terms of the guideline. Except for the plant names, the naming convention for this batch is actually quite efficient if you try to locate images before or after one in the same series.  Docu  at 05:37, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
Most of the images in Category:Phoebastria immutabilis could be renamed but we are nowhere 20,000 images in this category. Also files like File:Starr 080602-5504 Eragrostis amabilis.jpg focus on the plant and not the bird and therefore a bot rename of the whole category would not be good - we need some human assistance.
As I said it is ok with me to rename the images with a wrong name. But I also think that a rename should be done to a descriptive name so the solution is to rename by hand or perhaps to use the relevant ID number + the category name.
So the solution could be that a human takes the categories one by one and make a gallery of all images to be renamed and after a few days to comment (add or remove images) then it should be possible to convert the gallery to a file the bot could use to rename after. --MGA73 (talk) 10:25, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

There might be some misunderstanding:

If you want to know how many "phoebastria immutabilis" this would match, try Special:Search/phoebastria immutabilis Starr (habitat OR habit). It gives 1052 results. This would touch a few images like Starr 080602-5504, but compared to the numerous images that need renaming, the overall gain is largely positive. Currently there is a risk that we get the reputation to apply random Latin names to images. I would be glad if we'd have more feedback from WikiProject Tree of Life on the systematic problem with currently face.

I agree that your solution is an acceptable alternative and, if you implement it, I would withdraw my proposal. I disagree with the initial suggestion by the uploader, i.e. request users to apply Rename to the up to 20,000 images. This would be too labor intensive.  Docu  at 08:22, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

(Note: in the meantime the issue about Phoebastria immutabilis has been partially fixed, as most files have been renamed. When reading the previous post, just bear in mind that the filename used some plant name, not "Phoebastria immutabilis"). We still have up to 19,000 to fix).  Docu  at 20:51, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
Yes. But since this request is disputed I do not think it should be listed here. Only undisputed requests should be on this page. I think you have these options:
1. You discuss it somewhere else and when/if concensus to rename to Starr (some number).jpg is reached you can start a new request.
2. You can make a list of files to rename, like:
  • from oldname.jpg to newname.jpg
  • from oldname1.jpg to newname.jpg
or
  • Images in Category:Whatever should (almost) all be renamed to Starr (some number) Whatever.jpg
  • Images in Category:Whatever2 should (almost) all be renamed to Starr (some number) Whatever2.jpg
3. You use AWB to mass add a Rename on the images that should be moved and then it is easy for admins or filemovers to rollback or rename (and quick add to Commons Delinker if needed).
4. Files are renamed manually.
This has been here a month and it sems that noone has a bot that can find out which images has a bad name and rename only those so I think this should be archived. --MGA73 (talk) 21:24, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
I'm a bit lost: The only person that seems to say he is disagreeing with renaming the files seems to be the one who renamed some of them.
Maybe you should explain to the bot operator how he should fix this upload. Pictures of animals, helicopteres and landscapes with Latin names of plants do look odd. --  Docu  at 07:13, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

From the request on my talk page . . . True, I've often removed the mention of the non-existent plant from the file description (easy!) without changing the file name (at first at least, near-impossible - a lot of these edits were done before it became possible to rename files). I'd be dubious about using "habitat" or "habit" as a good search method though, quite often files with this in do show the filename species (e.g. File:Starr 041113-0632 Araucaria columnaris.jpg, File:Starr 050818-3970 Pinus radiata.jpg); unfortunately, I doubt there's any way other than a file-by-file inspection. What I have done though with nearly all the files without the named plant that I've edited, is put them in one of these categories, so any Starr file in these cats would be worth renaming: Category:Aerial photographs of Hawaii, Category:Airports in Hawaii, Category:Beaches of Hawaii, Category:Coasts of Hawaii, Category:Islands of Hawaii, Category:Landscapes of Hawaii, Category:People of Hawaii, Category:Trails in Hawaii, Category:Roads in Hawaii, Category:Restoration of habitats, Category:Transport in Hawaii. Hope this helps! - MPF (talk) 08:46, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

  • @ Docu. I support rename to a descriptive name and the renames I did was to a descriptive name.
  • @ MPF. Yes examples like these ones are helpful (categories with a lot of files where almost all images should be benamed). --MGA73 (talk) 20:00, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
The problem with the defaults you chose is that they messed up files that were already renamed. Please be more careful in the future.  Docu  at 22:17, 4 September 2010 (UTC)
How/what is that a mess up? You have to explain. If changing from "File:Starr number-number <some name>.jpg" to "File:Starr number-number <name of category the image is in>.jpg" is not good then the category is wrong. I used my bot to add a rename-tag and the admin/filemover has to check if the move looks ok. If a file should not be renamed then hopefully the admin/filemover will remove the rename-tag.
If you can not set up a rule (that meet at least one of the rename criterias) that bots can follow without (very few) exception(s) then this is not suited for a bot request. --MGA73 (talk) 17:42, 19 September 2010 (UTC)
Aha I found some examples. Well it just tells me that using a bot to do the rename is perhaps not the best idea. --MGA73 (talk) 21:04, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

Some cleanups

  1. Remove empty Information templates (including redirect templates to information)
  2. Fix Information templates where description is declared like |description: or just |description
    English: english desc.
    .
  3. Replace external links to *.wikimedia.org / *.wikipedia.org etc. with their respective interwiki link.--DieBuche (talk) 12:29, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Please give some examples for clarification. --Schlurcher (talk) 11:18, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
I suppose [1] (data from 2009) would find samples of the second in the above list, notably the entries under "0" and "1" in the report (listing works, but includes lots of other stuff and tends to time-out).  Docu  at 03:38, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

Redirect ns:0 to ns:14

If there is no page in ns:0 with the same title, redirect it to the corresponding title in ns:14. Initially, at least for subcategories of Category:People by name, sample: Derib => Category:Derib. Docu  at 04:51, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

While I understand the benefits for doing this and I think I even support it. It may be quite controversial. Maybe the VP would be better to discuss these before a bot does it. Rocket000 (talk) 08:37, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
I'm not quite sure how, but obviously you are free to do so. Personally, I mainly use this page per its stated purpose above.  Docu  at 08:36, 17 September 2010 (UTC)
And there's nothing wrong with it. My comment was more to any bot operator considering doing this task. Rocket000 (talk) 13:36, 19 September 2010 (UTC)
Wouldn't it be much nicer to just change the search engine to instantly jump to ns:14 just like it does with ns:0? Multichill (talk) 13:59, 19 September 2010 (UTC)
It would also help linking people's name internally at Commons. In any case, there are a lot of nice things that could be done with the search engine ;)  Docu  at 23:21, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

Mountains

Create the missing categories on List of mountains categories and populate them with existing categories for specific mountains based on values found in WP articles using w:Template:Infobox mountain.  Docu  at 09:15, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

I guess it's too late now, but the naming system is a little confusing. Category:1990s mountains? Mountains from the 1990s? It doesn't even mention it's meters. :) I would do this task but it's beyond my skills. Rocket000 (talk) 13:34, 19 September 2010 (UTC)
I suppose the naming system could still be changed. Isn't the meters part obvious ;) --  Docu  at 03:25, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
Well, yeah, but by including the units makes it clear that it's a measurement. Some categories do use meters: Mountains under 1000 meters, Mountains between 7400 and 7499 meters, etc. Rocket000 (talk) 04:34, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
I agree that the current naming isn't ideal and I suppose we could move it if someone comes with a better way to name them. "Mountains between 7400 and 7499 meters" seems fine for the parent categories, but "Mountains between 7400 and 7409 meters" would seem a bit heavy. BTW, shouldn't it be "from 7400 to 7499"?  Docu  at 04:52, 28 September 2010 (UTC)
Templatetiger could be used to provide the necessary data. Current status is from 2010-05-14. --  Docu  at 04:52, 28 September 2010 (UTC)

Photoshop file change date and time => {other date|before|..} ?

If there is no date and time a picture was taken available in exif, for images without any date in Information or with date "unknown" in the date field, one could use xx to populate this field.

Sample: File:Yves Christen by Erling Mandelmann.jpg includes

  • Software used Adobe Photoshop 7.0
  • File change date and time 14:54, 2005 July 4

One could populate date= in Information with before

If there was a "Date and time of data generation" or "Date and time of digitizing" present, this shouldn't be used.  Docu  at 04:37, 28 September 2010 (UTC)

Object location to categories based on interwikis

To add geocoding to more categories, we could import coordinates from Wikipedia articles linked through interwikis. --  Docu  at 11:59, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

Move them, e.g.,

  • from "Images from US Navy, ship USNS Patuxent (T-AO 201)"
  • to "Aboard USNS Patuxent (T-AO-201)" (note the "-")

etc..

If the later doesn't exist, it should be made a subcategory of, e.g. Category:USNS Patuxent (T-AO-201) --  Docu  at 05:32, 30 September 2010 (UTC)

Navy cleanup

Descriptions of files in Category:PD US Navy frequently repeat the string used to indicate the author in the author field. This could easily be removed (sample).  Docu  at 05:13, 7 October 2010 (UTC)

I kept these in the description because I consider it part of the caption. Are you sure you want to remove it? Multichill (talk) 18:11, 12 October 2010 (UTC)
Personally, I'd remove it. It's does mirror frequent use of #metadata in such images.  Docu  at 20:24, 19 October 2010 (UTC)

What about just having a dedicated (sub)page for this? This is a continues effort and makes it easier to keep track of it. Multichill (talk) 09:27, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
I'm not sure if this page already is used as frequently as it could. Subpages tend to get forgotten even more. Once an initial run is completed, we could move them to a subpage.  Docu  at 11:53, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

change cat

The 81 files listed but not yet categorized in Category:Rio2016 bid icons should be removed from the crowded categories Round symbols and Percent icons and come instead to category Rio2016 bid icons - preferable with a cat-sort suffix (to prevent from sorting 0-10-100-20-30..). If you could do that, I can provide you with any format of list for your bot.-- sarang사랑 16:33, 3 December 2010 (UTC)

Unifying of date format

Could be all templates Date replaced by ISOdate in order to unify date format in all date templates? ISOdate can be subsequently renamed to Date. Presently existing templates Information, Other date, Taken on, According to EXIF data etc. use uniformly the ISO format, Date is the only and needless exception which can be eaily transformed. --ŠJů (talk) 07:28, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

At the moment ISOdate uses the template Date, so this must be fixed first. On the other hand it makes the code of ISOdate a bit easier to read. --Schlurcher (talk) 08:22, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

Remove parameter names from a template

Files that use LicenseReview something like this: should have the parameter names removed so that it looks something like this: google.com. The template will be changed so that it takes only numerical parameters like 1=. Thanks in advance, ZooFari 03:03, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

Why is this being changed ? What was wrong with the named parameters ? I think those are more readable, easier to work with (both for humans and for (java)scripts) and more friendly to editors (ie. sometimes "1=" is when the url has a '=' sign in it. With named parameters this problem doesnt exist. –Krinkletalk 19:06, 9 December 2010 (UTC)

Clean up of "I, " for author and attribution parameters

I dont know exactly where this originates from but it makes no sense and doens't do anything any good. Please get rid of it all as it screws up even more now that third parties start to re-use meta data by using element-id hooks. 100s if not 1000s of pages now show at attribution: "Attribution: I, NAME". Affected parameters:

  • |author=
  • |attribution=
  • |1=

list of works

I think it would useful to generate lists of work such as Creator:Berthe_Morisot/works based on files using Creator:Berthe Morisot and Artwork (or Information).

Possibly this can be done by an existing extension or a bot.

Bot are not the right way to enforce new ideas. If there is a consensus please post a detailed work schedule. --Schlurcher (talk) 08:21, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
It should really be done by bot rather than manually. This is the place of post ideas for such bots. Obviously, an extension would be preferably, but there doesn't seem to be a suitable one. For consensus, see the Template_talk:Creator mentioned above.  Docu  at 03:00, 10 November 2010 (UTC)

Replace "county" for "powiat" for Polish categories

Poland don't have "County". "Powiat" is equivalent for "County". Is it posssible to replace them using bot in Category:Churches in Poland by voivodeship? I did some replacements by hand in the Category:Churches in Masovian Voivodeship, but it is too much to do manual conversion . --WlaKom (talk) 19:25, 16 December 2010 (UTC)

Is this appropriate? We usually use equivalent English-language terms when they exist. For example, for Romanian locations, we use "county", not "judeţ". - Jmabel ! talk 17:20, 18 December 2010 (UTC)
"County" in Polish means "Hrabstwo". Doesn't exist in Poland.
"Powiat" - administrative District of Voivodeship (Województwo) in Poland.
"Gmina" - Commune (territorial division of powiat in Poland).
Most of categories related to Poland already use "powiat" or Polish language. So far, had been changed in Category:Churches in Masovian Voivodeship by powiat. This is an old wrong translation, which has never been corrected. --WlaKom (talk) 19:29, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

adding defaultsort to Category:People by name

Some subcategories in Category:People by name don't have a sortkey yet. An easy way to populate that could be to import the sortkey used at en.wiki.  Docu  at 12:05, 4 December 2010 (UTC)

I have tackled this task 2-3 times before, so I will try it again. It is usually done in few steps:
  1. Find categories missing defaultsort
✓ Done about 10k categories and galleries were missing defaultsort. --Jarekt (talk) 04:37, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
  1. Add defaultsort for easy cases, like European names (using lastname, firstname [middlename]) order or names like "name of place", or single-word names (using )
  2. Process challenging names like Asian names - here I might need some help from other bots that can use en.wiki or human volunteers.
--Jarekt (talk) 20:00, 16 December 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. You just flooded my watchlist. --  Docu  at 09:12, 19 December 2010 (UTC)

Categories included through templates

Can somebody substitute (and remove) all templates which include item categories like WSTMcat? If the category is mistaken, the error is not fixable, and when some subcategories are created (e. g. by country), such content cannot be moved into them. --ŠJů (talk) 17:56, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

As it's an image source category, I think it's preferable to add this through template.
Are there cases where you think it's added by error?
As the subcategories of Category:Images from Wikis Take Manhattan by participant or team are not topical categories, IMHO, they should be hidden categories (or categories with the flag "image source" once that exists). --  Docu  at 09:49, 15 January 2011 (UTC)
Support Looks like that template does add topical categories, e.g. File:WSTM Three Blind Mice 0019.JPG uses R22 that calls R22 which adds Category:Street furniture in New York City.
It should obviously be possible to change that category. --  Docu  at 09:54, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

Sort by date?

Hi. As part of the tidy up of the Buses in the United Kingdom category scheme, some of the Category:Buses in the United Kingdom by year of photographing subcategories have been further expanded. For example, Category:Buses in the United Kingdom photographed in 2009 now has a subcategory for each month, e.g. Category:Buses in the United Kingdom photographed in January 2009 and so on. There are currently 2,147 images in the main 2009 category, so obviously it would take ages to sort them manually. The 2008 and 2007 categories have also been done, with a further 1,782 images in those that need to be sorted into the monthly categories. Before 2007 there aren't enough files per cat to warrant months. 2010 is already fully sorted.

So, I was wondering whether it would be possible for a bot to sort the images. I don't know a lot about bots, but I thought it would be worth asking just in case, as it would save a big job. Can bots "read" the metadata of a given file either? I was thinking that, as a way of checking files don't get put in the wrong place, the bot could see if the metadata matched with the date given in the information table (most of which are in the correct 2009-xx-xx format), and if they do match, then move the images into the appropriate category. If it works, then this would stop any mistakes. The rest of the files could be left and then sorted manually.

Would this work?! The categories that if possible could be sorted are Category:Buses in the United Kingdom photographed in 2009, Category:Buses in the United Kingdom photographed in 2008, Category:Buses in the United Kingdom photographed in 2007. Commons OTRS members list sorted by language and activity level

See original threads on the OTRS noticeboard and en:User_talk:Rick_Block. Anyone up to coding this? I'd like the language fields to be ultimately manually editable (or manually editable from the start), as language for the active people can be approximately determined by reference to their SUL contribs. So the main things are compiling the list and then continuously sorting it by activity level.--Chaser (talk) 19:09, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

Commons is still new with it's list of OTRS volunteers. See also List of OTRS volunteers on Meta-Wiki which has existed for a longer period of time and may be a more appropiate place for such overview. –Krinkletalk 00:30, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
This got a good reception on the OTRS noticeboard because we're often searching for OTRS members that speak a given language. The problem with the meta list is that many of those people simply are not active on Commons.--Chaser (talk) 16:28, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

Nearly 2000 photos are categorized through WSTMtag. This template use some thematic coding related to en:Wikipedia:Wikipedia Takes Manhattan/Goals. This way of categorization obstructs whatever category changes and category moves.

File pages which use this template should be transformed in order to be categorized directly. The template should be either substituted or the categorization should be extracted and substituted from the template coding. --ŠJů (talk) 20:14, 11 February 2011 (UTC)

The country= parameter in Artwork/Painting was depreciated quite some time ago. Archive bot for Graphic Lab

Hi. It would be nice to have a bot that archives resolved requests in the four workshops within the Commons:Graphic Lab, in a similar manner to the way archiving works here. The only difference would be the template used, Resolved or , and not remove the template when archiving to a subpage. The Wikipedia Graphic Lab already has one, but the bot owner has never responded to any of my requests so it would be appreciated if anyone can come up with something. A bot is only needed to archive resolved requests, not stale ones. Thanks, --ZooFari 18:05, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

Extract image from stereo cards

Sometimes a single image from a stereo card is more useful than the stereo card.

As the sizes of all cards in some categories are identical (e.g. Stereo cards of Indonesia), a bot could automatically create a crop and upload that. For the sample image to the right, it would just upload the left part of the card as a new file. --  Docu  at 07:24, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Commons helpme

Hi,

Currently Helpme isn't highly used yet but it's getting more and more active. I think it'd be nice to have a bot that can:

  • Report on IRC when the template is used
  • Where it is used (diff-link, contributor and article title)
  • How it is used (language and type)

This will make it easier to catch multi-lingual requests or rather catch anything at all. Right now it's manually picking the categories. Our aim is to get the requests directly popping in front of our noses on IRC so people that speak a certain language can help them right away (before they go away, do something else and perhaps forget about it).

It would report all additions/removals in a seperate channel (say #wikimedia-commons-helpme or #cvn-commons-helpme) and additions by anonymous users in #cvn-commons. I know there's a Helpmebot project but I haven't figured out how to set it up, nor could I find sufficient documentation to know if it's capable of doing what we need.

It'd be great if anyone could point in the right direction or perhaps write a bot like this. –Krinkletalk

E.g. we have Category:Waldhof (ship, 1993), part of Category:Ships built at Damen Shipyards Gorinchem. And we have Category:Damen Shipyards Gorinchem, part of Category:Shipyards in the Netherlands . For the ship category is Category:Ships built in the Netherlands a redundant category, as Damen Gorinchem is a shipyard in the Netherlands. --Stunteltje (talk) 14:35, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

If you add Damen Shipyards Gorinchem to Category:Ships built at Damen Shipyards Gorinchem
Multichill's bot will add images that are in both categories there (if they aren't there yet) and remove them from former categories (if they are still there). --  Docu  at 14:51, 13 March 2011 (UTC)
This must be done manually for all shipyards or can it be done by a bot too. --Stunteltje (talk) 15:20, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

Fixing typo "transfered" to "transferred"

There's a massive amount of typos due to the CommonsHelper bot and people often not checking their moves to commons, and these tend to be found near the BotMoveToCommons template. I've tried to file a bug here regarding the issue, but it doesn't seem to be pulling through. In the meantime, we have lots of files uploaded to Commons everyday from other Wikimedia projects, and it would be helpful to have a bot go through and fix the typos one by one. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 04:09, 11 March 2011 (UTC)

Okay, it seems that the first instance of the typo "transferred" ("Original uploaded by UserA (Transferred by UserB)") has been removed from the BotMove process, but the second instance ("This file was originally uploaded at wiki as file, before it was transfered to Commons.") has still yet to be fixed. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 03:25, 16 March 2011 (UTC)
If it is fixed in the skript, I can correct the existing typos. --Schlurcher (talk) 14:29, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

Notifications to projects using at-risk images

For a while CommonsTicker, a bot that notified projects of in-use files that were nominated for deletion, has not been in operation. While starting to go through backlogs of images lacking permission I've had someone ask me to notify all projects and articles using images before I delete them. But the backlogs in Category:Media missing permission and Category:Media without a source are significant enough as it is that going through them twice, first placing notifications, then coming back later and doing deletions, all the while tracking what has been notified for and what hasn't, would make the backlogs quite ridiculous. I can relate, having been frustrated seeing images deleted at Wikibooks, especially after deletion requests where I could have participated. I also seem to remember some comments and ill will at the English Wikipedia towards Commons admins to the effect that they supposedly didn't feel accountable to the projects. It would be nice if a replacement bot could be developed to do the same thing as CommonsTicker once did, plus notifications for no source/permission. That would likely do well to improve the relationships between other Wikimedia project participants and Commons. – Adrignola talk 19:09, 4 April 2011 (UTC)

Just a note: This is not needed for dewiki because there already is a bot informing most local Portals and WikiProjects about commons deletion requests. Merlissimo (talk) 00:31, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

Ships by decade (e.g. Category:1990s ships)

Category:Ships by name includes many subcategories in the standard format "<name> (ship, <year>)".

Based on the year, all these could be added to the decades categories, e.g. Category:Maid of the Mist VII (ship, 1997) => Category:1990s ships. --  Docu  at 07:27, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

Isn't it a good idea to create these categories by year, besides by decades? Can be done by the same bot. So first by year and after that the years in a decade. See Category:1940s ships as example. --Stunteltje (talk) 09:14, 13 March 2011 (UTC)
I was convinced that the categories were only done by decade. Looks like someone created a few by year. If we want to keep them, yes. --  Docu  at 09:21, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

Automobile advertisements by year

In think these are in the order of how easy they are:

  1. For each year in Category:Automobile advertisements by year, add the year category to Automobile advertisements
  2. Create missing after 1890 or so (assuming that's allowed by policy for promising year categories).
  3. A lot of ads are both in their proper year and in Category:Automobile advertisements for some reason. (Maybe someone wants them there until they get both an ad year and a vehicle model? I have no idea. Maybe there is no reason at all.) One may want to consider removing Category:Automobile advertisements from the ones that are already in their proper year.

I should learn to set up a bot one of these days, but I'm still not there yet. --Closeapple (talk) 17:03, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

Got those too (they used Rename instead of rename :) ). Do we need to keep Rename? What is the difference between 2 templates? --Jarekt (talk) 18:08, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
One used to be for files, the other for categories, but people kept confusing them. --  Docu  at 18:50, 9 April 2011 (UTC)
Rename used to work only for files (as documented), but someone adapted it so that it works for categories. There are two solutions:
  • Either rename is changed so that it displays clearly an error message when used for categories
  • SieBot is changed so that it understands that remove is equivalent to move. The first solution seems the most feasible in the short term. --Foroa (talk) 05:56, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

faux PD text

Hello. There is a text on plenty of images which was probably subst'ed from an old and invalid PD_Hungary template which should be removed. Moreover it would be neat to tag these images for manual review, like putting them into a hidden "PD-Hungary review needed" category, or use

The text is as follows:

This image was created in Hungary and is now in the public domain because its term of copyright has expired. According to Hungarian copyright law, photographs which do not enjoy copyright protection as scientific or artistic works enter the public domain after 15 years counted from the end of the calendar year in which they were first published.

As far as I see the occurences are identical, so I suspect a subst'ed template.

As for its content, this provision does not exist in the current law, nor the provided link is alive. Since the law was enacted retroactive I don't think there's much more to do about it. Manual review it is. Thanks. --grin 19:39, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

A proposal about new and old provincial maps of Italy

Locator of the province or Rimini (used as exemple). Comparison between the new svg map (left) and the old png one (right). Note the resolution and also the territorial change between Emilia-Romagna and Marche.

Hello. I hope that this is the right place for a proposal of mine:
The first provincial maps of Italy, categorized here (png) may be substituted by the svg ones, categorized here. This proposal of mine is due to a pair of reasons.

  1. The svg maps are clearer and have a better resolution (see pictures on the right of the same province)
  2. Most important, the png maps are not updated: As you can see, the Province of Rimini (and so the region Emilia-Romagna) have enlarged its territory (2009), because 7 municipalities of the Province of Pesaro-Urbino (region of the Marche) joined Rimini after a referendum. Both maps (png and svg groups) are divided per province (all), and so the png ones shows the situation before this change, in all the provinces.

Proposals (work request for a bot):

  1. Is it possible to transform the png maps into a redirect to the correspondant svg ones?
  2. If not, is it possible to flag a commons-bot to work, in a similar way as Commons Delinker, on Wikipedia, to substitute the old maps with the new ones? I've substituted them, some months ago, on provincial articles of enwiki, but I note that they (the old ones) are still used onto articles reguarding Italian villages (as of civil parishes, wards and so on) without an infobox.
  3. A third solution: may a bot upload, on the png maps, a new and updated version? This could be done saving and renaming the svg maps, using their standard names (that is province name posizione.png). Then they could be subscribed and so updated.

Thanx for the attention. Sorry for the waste of time if this was not the right place to add this kind of request. Regards. --Dэя-Бøяg 20:21, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

CommonsDelinker can replace one image with another one. Due to problems created with such replacements in the past, it can't substitute non-SVG formats with SVGs.
If you like to replace images at en_wiki, you should try to do a request there. --  Docu  at 06:31, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

update word translation lists

Lists like Template:Occupation/ru are very useful but not easy to keep up to date. It would be great if a bot was able to find the words that are in the English list (template:occupation/en) and add it in the form foo={{Please Translate|Occupation|lang]] --Zolo (talk) 06:36, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

I agree this would be a good task for a bot and if someone knows how to write one it would be great. Other approach I often use is to:
  1. copy the en and ru lists to Excel and convert each into 2 column table one with a key word and one with translation
  2. use excel functions (like VLOOKUP) to merge 2 lists
  3. than you can either provide translations or add foo={{Please Translate|Occupation|lang]]

Batch rename

The National Archives recently became aware that the citation format used in their catalog was in a slightly incorrect form for its Ansel Adams photos. This is what we used to name all of the images in Category:2011 Ansel Adams donation from U.S. National Archives, so they need to be renamed. Currently, the Local Identifiers are given in the form "79-AA-A01", as in File:Ansel Adams - National Archives 79-AA-A01.jpg. The correct identifier should be "79-AAA-1". The 2 corrections are (a) the three letters should be in the middle block, rather than broken up by the second hyphen, and (b) there should not be initial zeroes for single-digit numbers in the last block. "79-AA-D01" should be "79-AAD-1", "79-AA-E10" should be "79-AAE-10", and so on. There are over 200 images which need to be renamed in that category (a few are already correct), so any help would be appreciated. Dominic (talk) 20:04, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

The template should be placed at the top of the file description page. It wont be needed if the file description page already has Pano360.

WikiProject Royal Society Journals Copyright Problem

Above discussion was copied from COM:VP. It looks like a task for a bot: download watermarked images, remove watermark, reupload images under the same name. Can anybody help with that? --Jarekt (talk) 19:51, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

If this is going to take some time to discuss and sort out, can the files carrying the logo be mass deleted (or taken off-line)? The UK Chapter has received an official complaint from the Royal Society with regard to these images and while they still carry the copyrighted logo there is every reason to comply with their request for deletion. -- (talk) 22:13, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

Remove Template:Vector version available with no parameter

Could a bot operator remove all Template:Vector version available missing a parameter from file description pages? There are currently ~200 such cases. --Leyo 13:11, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

Comment If you are keen to find copyright violations I would be careful. In some cases the template is empty because the svg was deleted for copyright violation and the raster version should have been deleted as well. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 15:13, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

Oppose Sorry for that, but I went through a couple of the files and most of them actually have vector versions which are not linked for various reasons. It would be of more value if that is sorted out by hand. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 15:52, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

What could be done automatically is that if there are two templates on one file description page one with a parameter and one without the empty one could be removed. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 15:58, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

In this case I full agree with Cwbm. Example -- πϵρήλιο 16:28, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

I'd prefer my suggestion because it would remove more files from the list. Though I don't know what would be easier to programm. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 12:21, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

Working on "Media needing categories" I found that in several cases the word "Cateogry" instead of "Category" is used. A search shows 147 hits. Can a bot replace it in the right word. Most important is "Cateogry:" in "Category:", so with the ":". Thanks, Wouter (talk) 19:50, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

Umm.. I just wanted to oppose/discuss this.. You're too fast, Docu! ;) I had suggested not to bot"correct" it. Reason: maybe now we have duplicate categories if the category was added again since it did not work the first time. Such unnoticed misspellings could be a good indicator that someone should look at the whole page. Well, next time. ;) Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 02:45, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
While we are at it; there might be another round of cleaning out constructs. --Foroa (talk) 05:15, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
@ Saibo, would like me to add them in a special category so you could easily review them? BTW, I don't think it matters if the category ends up being twice on a page. MediaWiki can handle that.
@ Foroa, is there an easy search link that could find them (e.g. Special:Search/File: "Category:Category" finds one: File:Ioannis Skandalidis.JPG). --  Docu  at 05:57, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
No idea, I think (but unsure) that Jarekt did the last round (many of them are in categories). It would be great if search could be instructed to search "exactly". --Foroa (talk) 07:34, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
Commons:WikiProject Check Wikipedia scans the source, but is made primarily for Wikipedia (article namespace).
Otherwise the approach at Commons:Bots/Work_requests#.C2.93_and_.C2.94 would work too. --  Docu  at 08:09, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

Another set of incorrect category tags: Non-english ones. This is a bit harder to work out, as these are valid words and may be used in the descriptions. That said the follow searches give:

That's the results for the major European languages, probably worth checking all major wiki languages.--Nilfanion (talk) 08:16, 27 July 2011 (UTC)

A problem for these categories is that the description of the category is also written in that language. For example File:Edificio Central Catalana Occidente.jpg. Replacing "Categoria" in "Category" will generate not existing categories. Wouter (talk) 18:35, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
I noticed these too, but hesitated to fix them. Even if the category names are not in English, it might be of use if they are presented as actual categories. --  Docu  at 08:09, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

Also do not forget about polish:

A look at few of those also suggest that categories will be mostly in Polish and not match Commons names. --Jarekt (talk) 12:54, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

That's for sure, but it might be easier to categorize them from a Polish name than from no category at all. Instead of leaving them red, maybe we should create them and add them into Category:Category names needing translation. --  Docu  at 13:49, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
I think it probably would be better to translate the category-prefix as then the non-English category is a category-link and not a normal redlink. Sometimes these will be the same as the existing category, in which case its done. If not, presenting as a category lets users modify/remove using HotCat. Many of these have appropriate categories anyway (examples: File:Jburtin.jpg and File:Chrysolina americana1FL.jpg). Adding the files to a "translation needed" category, and changing the prefixes to English is probably ideal.--Nilfanion (talk) 08:35, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
@above: (sorry, I did not see the response earlier) Go ahead with fixing - I wouldn't have time to check a maintanance cat with all fixed files. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 00:13, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
@nilfanion: Ok, I can add the files to a "translation needed" category instead (it's even easier to do). --  Docu  at 13:38, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
Here are the first 99 from "Catégorie": Category:Translation needed (from catégorie). --  Docu  at 16:41, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

category & author name change

I recently had my username changed from User:Maedin to User:Julia W. I need two categories moved: category:Media by User:Maedin to category:Media by Julia W, and category:Quality Images by Maedin to category:Quality images by Julia W. I can request this if the bot operator doesn't have admin privileges (just let me know). I'm asking for each image currently included in either category to be changed to the new category/categories.

The second half of my request is for the author name (currently Maedin Tureaud) (an old online pseudonym) in the 'Media by User:Maedin' category be changed to Julie Anne Workman.

Thank you! Julia\talk 17:27, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

Consider using cat-a-lot. It is in Special:Preferences#preftab-8. After doing so, you may use User:Rillke/AjaxMassDelete.js (doc and easy install) to change the author-name (using option "custom replace") while visiting your category. -- RE rillke questions? 17:41, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

If you would have a look here, please: #category & author name change. 14 images and a bot-request. -- RE rillke questions? 12:23, 4 September 2011 (UTC)
I want it to be done by a bot because I don't want to do it by hand. I know cat-a-lot, I use it, but, as I've said above, I simply don't want to do it myself. Statements like "lol" in legitimate requests like this are simply insulting. --Marco Aurelio (disputatio) 12:42, 4 September 2011 (UTC)
Sorry, I am going to choose my words with more care in future. Whether a bot-request for 14 files, if they are tools you can use available, is legitimate is another question. In my eyes a waste of time. I am going to unwatch this page. -- RE rillke questions? 13:01, 4 September 2011 (UTC)
Thank you. This request can be closed. I used AWB to use it at it seems that administrators are allowed to use it. Licence split

This section was archived on a request by: Multichill (talk) 14:36, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

As it is described at the talk page, CC-AR-Presidency, a licence about images from a web page, needs to be split into two cases, as the terms changed. There was first an autorization via OTRS to use their files under cc-by. The site changed their licence to a non-commercial, I deleted the images made after the change, and now they changed back to a commons-compatible licence, but a cc-by-sa this time.

Where do bots come into play? Fortunately, there's no need to manually go checking the dates, because I already did that work: the images that should use the old licence are the available ones, and the ones that would use a new one are those I deleted. The best way I thought to manage this mess is to rename CC-AR-Presidency to something else, such as CC-AR-Presidency-old, and run a bot to replace all the uses of the licence to the new one. Once the work is done, I would overwrite the "Template:CC-AR-Presidency" page (which should be an unused redirect by this point) with a licence with the terms for the newer images. And then, a mass undeletion of images: as the licence template they used would be now the good one, I would not need to manually change the files, just select and undelete at high speed. Cambalachero (talk) 01:51, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

The replacemant of all the uses shouldn't be a problem, I can do it if the new template exists. --Schlurcher (talk) 20:44, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
Done. The old template is now CC-AR-Presidency-old. CC-AR-Presidency is the new template, with a temporary disclaimer of the changes going on. The bot should now replace all uses of "CC-AR-Presidency" with "CC-AR-Presidency-old", to keep things as they have to be. Tell me when the move is done and the bot stops working, as it would be safe then to upload the new images. Cambalachero (talk) 02:06, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
✓ Done, but there are a few remaining ones, that use some kind of double licence, please see: [6] --Schlurcher (talk) 18:12, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

Bot to fetch Flickr GPS Data

(this is a repost as there was no reply on the first one) I have just imported quite a bunch of flickr images and noticed, that not all flickr importing bots import the gps data with the image. So I think, that we probably have many images from flickr without GPS Data either because the importing bot doesn't import the gps data or the data has been added afterwards. Would it be possible to program a bot to check all our Flickr images for GPS data on flickr and import them if they are not present? Amada44  talk to me 11:41, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

Please omit to output the same spelling 2 times. (e.g. "United States" and "United states" is OK.)

bot run to find svgs containing image tag

Odd colour profiles

Problem: Files with device-specific colour profiles (other than plain sRGB and AdobeRGB) are not rendered correctly on all systems. Right now there's one such complaint on COM:VP ("Colour-Distorted images") and another one at COM:AN/U ("Cluster of copyvio.."). Just how many such files are there? Hard to tell because some profiles will go wrong on my systems, others will fail on yours, no one can see it all.

Suggestion for a bot:

  • Pass 1: Screen all jpegs for signs of non-standard colour profiles, mark such files with temporary category tags (ideally, one category or one gallery for each specific colour profile).
  • Wait for human reviewer that will tag them with Convert to sRGB
  • Pass 2: the bot converts tagged files to sRGB (ala Rotatebot).

Potential fallout: loss of fidelity in cases when device-specific colour space is considerably wider than sRGB.

Does it make any sense? Or perhaps something like this already exists? NVO (talk) 04:45, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Wanted: a CC-BY-SA 3.0/nl licence template on 172 files from Open Beelden

Hi, On 172 files I uploaded a licence template is missing. You can read the discussion on User_talk:Clausule#Copyright_status:_File:Amerikaanse_filmacteur_Danny_Kaye_arriveert_op_Schiphol.ogv. All 172 have the same licence, you can check them out by using the links in the file discriptions. I hope a bot action can do this trick. Thank you very much. Clausule (talk) 09:40, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

I added a few ones but it seems to irregular for me to do this by script. You need a bot fetching the author as well. Pleae look at your uploads from Jan. 2011 to today whether the change was appropriate. -- RE rillke questions? 10:12, 4 September 2011 (UTC)
Hi Rilke, Thank you very much for taking the time doing this job. I'm not experienced in bot action. So I don't know exactly what you mean, please excuse me for that. I checked my watchlist (all my uploads are included) and the actions were right. All other images and videos with the Open Beelden template, that were uploaded by me (Clausule), need the CC-BY-SA license. I guess you had understood that, therefore also excuse for that :-) Clausule (talk) 23:20, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

Well, if there is always a different author which is not mentioned already at the file desc it probably is simply manual work to do. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 01:48, 5 September 2011 (UTC)

Removing stale templates

It appears that a number of images tagged with Uncategorized have actually been categorized. Is there a bot that could make this kind of edit to remove the uncat template from images that are listed in at least one category? WhatamIdoing (talk) 01:20, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

There is a bot that does that automatically already. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 08:47, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
That looks like a bot that could do this. Can we have a bot that actually does this, i.e., more recently than five weeks ago? WhatamIdoing (talk) 15:29, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
If you use HotCat to add another category to a file, it would disappear as well.
You could also add
.checkcategories {display: none;}
to Special:MyPage/common.css. --  Docu  at 17:59, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

I'm sorry. I'm gonna end this. This is ridiculous. Nobody in his sane mind is going to run a bot for a task that is already done. Secondly you are hardly active here anyway. You stumble across one file. Really does the world have to come to a standstill because you experienced something that can't even be called an inconvenience. If a user who does a lot of categorizing here is really bother by this then she can ask the botmaster to have the bot run more frequently. There are actually important things to do as can be seen on this page. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 20:00, 30 August 2011 (UTC)

If it is "already done", then why have 30% (thirty percent!) of my random sampling in Category:Media needing categories as of 8 September 2008 shown up as "uncategorized" despite being listed in a category? I'm serious: I clicked through to ten images, and three of them—File:Mos sjss.jpg, File:Mouse Wheel.png, and File:Mousepad text editor screenshot.png are listed in a valid cat.
And, by the way, the reason I clicked on these is because I saw a request for more people to help with categorization at Meta. If you'd rather do it all yourself, then just keep being rude to people who are trying to help. WhatamIdoing (talk) 23:58, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

Once in a while this should indeed be done. Maybe we should try to schedule it more regularly. --  Docu  at 06:00, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

Actually the bot that used to do this doesn't seem to work anymore. The database query never finishes. You can find the query here (if someone wants to try and fix this). When you have the result it's just a replace.py to remove the uncategorized template (command is replace.py -lang:commons -file:not_uncat.txt -family:commons -regex -nocase "\{\{Uncategorized\|[^\}]+\}\}" "").
