Licenses

[edit]

Categories Febr. 2020:

@Alexis Jazz: That leaves the last 3 categories (totalling 757 images) to have a correct license or be deleted from Commons. These images are used intensively, with several stunning & important images, and even two logos of Beeld & Geluid Wiki. Stats: mixed 40 images used 1128 times in Wiki, source unclear 132 images used 826 times, unclear 585 images used 3844 times. Together: 757 images used 5798 times. Road ahead (my proposal): I will contact Beeld & Geluid to ask if they could help clear up the licenses of these images, at a rate of 100 images a month, and perhaps offer some assistance from Wikimedians. Vysotsky (talk) 17:20, 21 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Vysotsky: sounds about right. Note that "source with only freely licensed content" can still go either way. At least some files link to, for example, "Eurovision" instead of "Eurovision 1973" where the actual file link is. Mixed licensing can also go either way. You could also ask from which users (if any, well, I guess 85jesse) the uploads could be trusted. These are the top uploaders:
  • 13 files by Edoderoo
  • 20 files by Pieter_Kuiper
  • 31 files by Jan_Arkesteijn (probably overwrites)
  • 64 files by Robotje
  • 101 files by Trijnstel
  • 101 files by Ymnes
  • 155 files by Vysotsky
  • 2350 files by Clausule

Is there a category of images concerned? Ymnes (talk) 19:32, 21 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Ymnes: yes. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 19:39, 21 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
What about mentioning it with a link? Ymnes (talk) 19:43, 21 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
At least I guess not all are threathened with deletion? Ymnes (talk) 19:45, 21 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Any action needed from my side? - Robotje (talk) 19:48, 21 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Ymnes, Alexis Jazz, Robotje, and Vysotsky: I think they mean the last three categories in the above list. That means this one, this one and this one. We probably should somehow fix it (no idea how, though) and then all is fine. The images from all other categories I safe, I guess. Trijnsteltalk 20:05, 21 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know either. Hopefully Beeld & Geluid can retreive some data. Ymnes (talk) 20:30, 21 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Clear. Thanks, all. I will do three things:

  • I'll work through the list with files "from a source with only freely licensed content" and put all 98 files in more conclusive categories. As to "mixed licensing": I already counted these files within the three to be examined categories.
  • I don't believe in the criterion "files from trusted users" (except from people working at Beeld & Geluid). We should be able to prove the licenses are OK, either because the source has the correct license or because a list or person from B&G shows the license to be correct. It would of course be helpful if some of the above users could help checking their own uploads.
  • I will contact Beeld & Geluid to ask if they can help us checking the licenses of the files in these 3 categories.

Deletion requests might interfere the working process and only cause more work, but I guess we can point to a fair and steady working process. Vysotsky (talk) 21:52, 21 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Vysotsky: I get what you mean, but is there a possibility to give me a list of my own uploads? As I have no idea what I uploaded... Trijnsteltalk 22:44, 22 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Commons isn't very courteous to uploaders. Guess I can't give you any more clues than this link. But perhaps @Alexis Jazz: knows a more clever trick. Vysotsky (talk) 23:53, 22 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Best thing you can do to help, is check if the files you uploaded, contain a direct link to Beeld & Geluid Wiki -if not, please add. Only files from these categories still need direct links: mixed licensing and unclear licensing. Vysotsky (talk) 23:59, 22 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Trijnstel: this is why I have Category:Files uploaded by Alexis Jazz. Not to show off, but because it allows me to search my own uploads. I can help you create a category like that if you want. For now, I'll give you the list of files you uploaded from the Beeld en Geluid category:
Extended content
Is that enough? (filtering from this list by license category would be another question, that would be easier with an uploader category) - Alexis Jazz ping plz 00:50, 23 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

At the end of the coming week I hope to have 4 (out of 7) categories Media from Beeld en Geluid Wiki left:

Thanks for offering your help Alexis Jazz, but Vysotsky already created the categories for me. :-) Trijnsteltalk 21:26, 23 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
