Module:Countries

[edit]

A new module is being developed at Module:Countries. The background (some out-of-memory errors) is outlined here. The module gets the label for each country from Wikidata, using the language of the current user.

{{Countries of Africa/sandbox}} contains wikitext:

{{#invoke:Countries/sandbox|main|Africa}}

A comparison of the main and sandbox templates is at my sandbox (permalink). See below for the comparison.

After some more checking and tweaks I was planning to use the sandbox wikitext to replace the main template. Pinging people who have edited this template: Auntof6 + Bjankuloski06 + Bjarlin + Joshbaumgartner + Russian Rocky + Slimguy. Any thoughts? Johnuniq (talk) 11:43, 15 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have updated the main template so it uses the module. Johnuniq (talk) 06:20, 18 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Comparison

[edit]

The following shows the output from Special:ExpandTemplates before the main template was changed. This is to show a comparison which will not change in the future. The examples were in my sandbox. Johnuniq (talk) 06:20, 18 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Template created in May 2016.

  • {{Countries of Africa}}
  • {{Countries of Africa|prefix=:Category:}}
  • {{Countries of Africa|prefix=:Category:1985 in}}

Template invoking the module.

  • {{Countries of Africa/sandbox}}
  • {{Countries of Africa/sandbox|prefix=:Category:}}
  • {{Countries of Africa/sandbox|prefix=:Category:1985 in}}

see Category:Power plants in Côte d'Ivoire. @Johnuniq: could you add this country to the template, please? --Te750iv (talk) 14:06, 26 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Te750iv: I fixed it at Module:Countries/Africa but there is confusion over the name. The same applies with some other countries which are known by a couple of names in common English, and where a transition from one form to the other may be occurring (possibly promoted by enthusiasts for one side). After purging Category:Power plants in Côte d'Ivoire it is now showing the item, but the name "Ivory Coast" is used because that is the English label used at d:Q1008. See Category:Maps of Ivory Coast for another example of confusion over the name. I have no opinion on what name should appear—if desirable, that can be fixed by editing Q1008 at Wikidata and renaming pages here. Johnuniq (talk) 02:08, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Johnuniq: Thanks. I'm glad that navigation links work now. It would probably make sense to unify the country name in categories, but I have also no opinion on the underlying name issue. --Te750iv (talk) 09:42, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Let's see (I make the test by adding the optional |showcode=yes parameter, which may facilitate comparing lists when the order changes when it is translated or not):

  • {{Countries of Africa|prefix=:Category:Power plants in|showcode=yes}} gives (translated order):
  • {{Countries of Africa|prefix=:Category:|showcode=yes}} gives (translated order):
  • {{Countries of Africa|prefix=:Category:Maps of|showcode=yes}} gives (translated order):
  • {{Countries of Africa|prefix=:Category:Maps of|showcode=yes|all=1}} gives (untranslated order, should list aliases and all countries missing above):

So no problem in "Côte d'Ivoire", or "Ivory Coast" which occurs as an alias (used by Category:Maps of Ivory Coast but still not as Category:Maps of Côte d'Ivoire which is normally the preferred form, including in English). The base Module:Countries is smart enough to detect if one redirects to another and avoid this redirect in the generated link. But actually the "all=1" still forgets to list the alias if they are generated by redirects, if these aliases are not listed as well (and directly) in the data module, in the preferred order to avoid having to look for redirects... verdy_p (talk) 19:06, 5 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Remove Azawad or not?

[edit]

As @Le Petit Chat: mentioned otherwise, the 2015 Algiers Peace Deals (fr:Accord d'Alger (2015)) ended the claims about an independant Azawad. I don't know if there are reasons to remain listing it. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 00:51, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
