Bonjour

-- Asclepias (talk) 11:08, 1 September 2021 (UTC)

Public personality photo

A public figure has asked me to upload his photo taken by himself. I can do it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by AinaSanc (talk • contribs) 07:23, 2 September 2021 (UTC)

  • @AinaSanc: The problem is that you need not only permission to upload, but the explicit grant of an appropriate license. If the image is already online on a page under their control, they can indicate the license there. If not, then they probably need to go through the COM:VRT process. - Jmabel ! talk 17:34, 2 September 2021 (UTC)

english site of Friedrich Lips

File:Russian and Trepak.jpg‬ I am the producer and publisher of the Friedrich Lips CD series and I have paid for publishing rights in Austria. The file shows the cover of LIPS CD 005 "Russian and Trepak" and should illustrate the Award the artist got at Just Plain Folks in the US.

File:LIPS-Foto.jpg‬ Private photo of the artist made by himself

File:Lips Lifetime Award.jpg File of Accordion Stars Illustrated Magazine in New York when the artist was voted “Musician of the Year” and was inducted into the “Accordion World Hall of Fame”.

If I am not allowed to publish these files on Wikipedia, we will have to delete them. Unfortunately the Wikipedia site will look less nicely and less informative. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Herbert52 (talk • contribs) 08:38, 2 September 2021 (UTC)

Uploaded a photo as "own work" without author's permission

I had uploaded a photo without realising that it needs the author's permission for doing that. Now, the file is marked for deletion as it lacks the necessary permission from the author. I have contacted the original author and would want to use the photo in question in an article that I plan to resubmit (declined earlier). Please help me 1) to delete the uploaded file as the approval from the author is pending 2) to assist the author in uploading the photo in Wikipedia Commons so that I may use it later. SukumarThingom (talk) 10:12, 2 September 2021 (UTC)

  • @SukumarThingom: Assuming you uploaded this within the last week, you can get it deleted by putting {{subst:My bad upload}} on the file page.
  • I hope you understand that you should not say that something is your "own work" when it is not.
  • At this point, the simplest thing is for the author to do one of two things:
    • If the photo is already on a website clearly under their control, or they are willing to put it there, they can indicate the relevant license there, at which point you can come to Commons:Undeletion request with a link to that.
    • Otherwise, the author needs to go through the process outlined at COM:VRT. They should not re-upload, we are past the point where that would be a good solution. - Jmabel ! talk 17:54, 2 September 2021 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Monuments 2021 in India

Hi Can you please help me with the information regarding how to upload picture for the 'Wiki Loves Monuments 2021 in India' competition. — Preceding unsigned comment added by B.Creado (talk • contribs) 09:20, 2 September 2021 (UTC)

Bad photo

I looked at several of the guidelines and failed to come upon "this is a crappy picture and unfair to the person it represents" as a reason for deletion. Perhaps someone there can help me. An editor added this photo of US state representative Kevin Christie. My concern is that this guy deserves better, and this photo is probably not a fair representation of what he looks like. I didn't find anything in COM:BLP, though perhaps it is "not educationally useful"? Thank you! Magnolia677 (talk) 16:30, 3 September 2021 (UTC)

And this one. Oh my. Magnolia677 (talk) 16:33, 3 September 2021 (UTC)
Description indicates the Christie image is extracted from a YouTube video, thus making it almost certainly not a free image. I've taken it out of use and will nominate it for deletion forthwith. Beeblebrox (talk) 16:36, 3 September 2021 (UTC)
Ok, I see that whatever ORCA media is does license it's videos with a CC license, but these images are horrible anyway and should not be in use. They are so poor that using them on Wikipedia could be considered a BLP violation. Beeblebrox (talk) 16:45, 3 September 2021 (UTC)
I removed many of the images in use on Wikipedia for this reason. Thanks for your help. Magnolia677 (talk) 16:57, 3 September 2021 (UTC)
Assuming the rights can be sorted out, then even such poor images may be allowed if we have no better image of the subject. But if we do, then these should be nominated for deletion as not being realistically useful. - Jmabel ! talk 19:38, 3 September 2021 (UTC)
I have in fact nominated several of them as being blurry, poor quality images that nobody should use. Since it is unlikely any project other than en.wp will ever have articles on state-level politicians in Vermont, if local policy there excludes their use (it does, at least while these folks are still alive) they will probably remain unused permanently. Hello,

The University of Texas Libraries publishes this photoset, of a book printed in Mexico in 1722 (299 years ago).

This library on the above cited webpage provides this statement: Rights - Use and Reproduction: http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NKC/1.0/

If you click on the statement, it reads: "NO KNOWN COPYRIGHT" and states "You are free to use this Item in any way that is permitted by the copyright and related rights legislation that applies to your use"

So, the publisher of the photo makes no claim of copyright of the photo and says we are free to use it in any way...

Can I upload a download of the photo of the cover page to Wikimedia? Their online widget has an option to download the photo in a range of sizes.

I did a search here on the Help D and couldn't find a similar case, but I am sure you have found this sort of license before.

Thanks for your time, XavierItzm (talk) 03:47, 2 September 2021 (UTC)

@XavierItzm: those images will be fine here. The authors must have been dead for more than a century by 1921—Mexico’s term is longer than most, at 100 years pma—and of course it’s automatically PD in the USA for having been published more than 95 years ago. You can tag such images with {{PD-scan}}; see the documentation there for how to enter the supporting info.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 06:38, 2 September 2021 (UTC)
@XavierItzm: If a library did claim copyright on a scan of a public-domain work, Wikimedia might not recognise the claim anyway. There was a dispute with the [UK] National Portrait Gallery over this; see Wikipedia:National Portrait Gallery and Wikimedia Foundation copyright dispute. In this case I think they are just trying to avoid legal liability by not making even the most glaringly obvious statements about the copyright status of their scans. Retouch

Can i upload edited ( photoshop/lightroom) photographs — Preceding unsigned comment added by Imaginia (talk • contribs) 16:27, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

It depends on the origin and copyright status of the photos that you want to retouch. Ruslik (talk) 20:03, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
If you upload the original version, and then upload the retouched version, saying how you retouched it, that would be transparent and probably utterly unobjectionable. You could upload the retouched version as a separate file if you think someone might want to use the original; otherwise, use the "Upload a new version of this file" link in the "File History" section of the image page. The wiki will keep a copy of the older version, and list it in the file history section. HLHJ (talk) 03:01, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

Instructions for using electric lights

This is in no way urgent or important, but linked from Category talk:Instructions for using electric lights and in the corresponding category there are some images that are very likely public domain but hard to date due to later reproductions. If anyone knows enough about the fonts used in the US in the late 1800s/early 1900s to be able to date them to before/after 1926, that would be useful. HLHJ (talk) 02:54, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

Saving the Folded Hands emoji,

I would like the opportunity to edit the Wikipedia database and to share relevant Mathematical Equations on

  • @Cindylixious: If you have not read Commons:Licensing#Acceptable licenses, please do. You attribute the image to a Facebook page where it cannot readily be found, and you do not give any reason to think it is either public domain or free-licensed, and you don't even claim any specific license.

Searching WIkimedia and 403 response

I created an API token and am registered to use the API. When I run the following, I get:

<Response [403]> {'error': 'rest-read-denied', 'httpCode': 403, 'httpReason': 'Forbidden'}

Here is the python script which I am running from Jupyter on my iMac:

# Python 3
# Search English Wikipedia for 10 articles about Earth

import requests

url = 'https://api.wikimedia.org/core/v1/wikipedia/en/search/page'
search_query = 'earth'
number_of_results = 10
parameters = {'q': search_query, 'limit': number_of_results}

headers = {
'Authorization': 'Bearer <ENTER LONG API KEY>',
  'User-Agent': '<MY GMAIL ADDRESS>'
}

response = requests.get(url, headers=headers, params=parameters)
print(response)
data = response.json()
print(data)

I've searched the FAQ and used Google to search for solutions but I am not finding anything. It isn't clear whether the Authorization or User-Agent is at fault. User-Agent on the API page says we can use Email. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Metaphorz9 (talk • contribs) 13:53, 31 August 2021 (UTC)

REVISION: The original issue seems to be related to the url. I modified the url to 'https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Earth'. Then I get "response" of 200. This is good and shows that authentication is working. However, from the API doc,

data = response.json()
print(data)

is throwing a JSONDecode error. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Metaphorz9 (talk • contribs) 17:17, 31 August 2021 (UTC)

  • Hi Cheryl, welcome to Wikipedia [sic].
First thing, this is Wikimedia Commons, not Wikipedia. Your article is on Wikipedia. Most people edit on both, but more one than the other. So some questions are very much more about one or the other, and you'll get better support for that by asking on that site.
Commons (quick version) is an image repository to support all the Wikipedias. So we deal with images much more than text. An article like this could obviously use an image, if you can get one. Swimmer articles often use two images, one as speeding blurs of water in the pool and the other outside, so we can actually see the subject! You'll need to find suitable photos and upload them to Commons, but they also need to be released with a "free licence" to be used here. See COM:Licensing. If it's your photo, you can issue that licence yourself. If it's a separate photographer, you'll have to talk to them – maybe convince them to contribute to Commons themselves, but they might release a single image for you for this, and COM:OTRS is a simple process (send us an email) to record this.
You've had a big addition removed (and revdeled). Best to ask @HickoryOughtShirt?4: about that. It looks like it was a copyright issue, so please don't take this to heart, but it's just one of those things we have to be careful with. You can probably get the admin to email you a copy of what was removed, if you don't still have it.
Your best next step is to talk to @HickoryOughtShirt?4: . Maybe say hi at en:WP:User talk:Cheryl S-Lee (add the {{ping|HickoryOughtShirt?4}} template to let them know) or directly at en:WP:User talk:HickoryOughtShirt?4. Andy Dingley (talk) 15:41, 1 September 2021 (UTC)
@Andy Dingley: Due to a name change and to avoid certain legal consequences, please refer to VRT instead of COM:OTRS.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 02:28, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

Thanks, I can see this is going to be a bigger learning curve. I have messaged HickoryOughtShirt?4. Cheryl S-Lee (talk) 17:21, 1 September 2021 (UTC)

Hi Cheryl S-Lee, sorry for my delayed response I was working. I will respond to your email shortly but it will be similar to what Andy Dingley said. The content was directly copied from her Team Canada article. While I do appreciate you using reputable sources rather than en:WP:OR, you cannot just copy and paste content onto Wikipedia. It is also strongly recommended people with conflicts of interest do not directly edit the Wikipedia articles. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 23:55, 1 September 2021 (UTC)

How do I add the date of when image was created?

I have uploaded photos of old images, such as magazine covers and photographs. I was informed my licensing data was wrong, and did my best to correct that. Now I am told I need to add the date of when the images were originally created, but I don't know how to add that date. When I bring up one of my contributions I can't figure out how to add a date, other than the one that tells when the photo was uploaded to Commons. Is there anyone who can help me save my contributions from being deleted? Karenthewriter (talk) 03:51, 3 September 2021 (UTC)

Jmabel ! talk thank you so much. I did change that date on one of my contributions, then I was worried I'd messed things up by doing so. I really appreciate being told how to put in the date of the original image, instead of just being told to do so. Karenthewriter (talk) 14:38, 3 September 2021 (UTC)
@Karenthewriter: Hi, and welcome. This edit was a mistake. Your other changes to dates are ok. Where are you getting these images and dates? For each image, what can you tell us about the lifetime of the copyright holder and the date and country of the image's first publication? See also {{Circa}} and the links there.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 02:15, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: I see that the Lummox title card has a date of 2017, and have no idea where that date came from, perhaps it was the date the image was uploaded to the website where I found it. I have tried to change that date to 1930 -- the date the film was released -- but I'm not sure if I succeeded.
I know nothing about the lifetime of any copyright holder.
You asked where I was getting my images. The covers of Wide Awake and Little Folks are photos I took of magazines that I own. The cover of the Keystone View Company book is a photo I took of a 1911 book in the research library of the Johnson-Shaw Stereoscopic Museum. The photo of Charles Stuart Pratt is a photo I took of a photocopied image sent to me by the Warner Historical Society. (Mr. Pratt became seriously ill in 1909, so I guessed that the original photo was taken pre-1909, when he was still able to walk.) The Little Folks gift card and Jack Orrison photos are photos I took of images found online. I believe I was able to copy the Lummox lobby card from the website where I found it. Karenthewriter (talk) 03:23, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
@Karenthewriter: Thank you for that info, please see COM:EVID and the templates linked at Template:Citation templates, which are based on enwiki templates. Re the Lummox title card, the "13 November 2017" inception date came from the "Date and time of digitizing" in the metadata via this edit, as did the date field filled by the Upload Wizard. Logos deleted

Hello. I've uploaded some logos, but it seems that the copyright I choose when I was uploading them was false, so it got deleted. How can I know which copyright to apply on these logos? And don't tell me that it's forbidden to upload some logos, because I've alredy seen some.

Thank you in advance. JpPgn — Preceding unsigned comment added by JpPgn (talk • contribs) 15:18, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

@JpPgn: Hi, You can only upload logos in 2 cases: 1. you have the copyright holder's permission, 2, the logo is very simple (only text and simple geometrical forms, depending on the country. See {{PD-textlogo}}.) Please sign with ~~~~. Regards, Yann (talk) 15:21, 5 September 2021 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) Basically, all logos are automatically copyrighted and non-free. Only those that are too simple to be copyrighted (e.g. just plain text and a geometric form) or logos whose copyright holder has licensed them for free use may be uploaded here. Also, only the copyright holder, namely the original artist or a publishing company, may decided which licence to use for a logo. It is not up to you to select any copyright licence that cannot be found at the original source. Additionally, what is deemed original enough to be copyrighted depends heavily on the country of origin of the graphic, so there is no templated way to say one logo is free to use or not. The ones that you uploaded though, were too complex to be free in most jurisdictions. That said, when you see a logo at Wikimedia Commons, it is either too trivial for copyright or it comes with a free licence from the copyright holder and not the uploader. Note also that Wikipedia allows fair use where non-free logos may be used under certain very restrictive circumstances to illustrate one specific Wikipedia article. At Commons, however, all uploads must be free for anyone to use for any purpose. De728631 (talk) 15:28, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

Spurious error message on uploading file (again)

Some time ago I reported a regularly occurring spurious error message:

There was an error in your submission:
You are already uploading the file "z.JPG".

which popped up at file upload. Despite the message, the upload actually worked successfully once the error was cleared. At the time, I assumed it was because I was repeatedly uploading (different) files all called "z.jpg", and even though one upload had fully completed as far as the system reported to me, there was a lag somewhere internally to recognise that the process had completed. However, I am now getting this message repeatedly even with filenames that I have never uploaded before. Does anyone else get this? Probably it should be fixed, since it is off-putting, even though, as I say, it apparently does not actually prevent the file uploading successfully. I use the upload wizard. I cycle through the screens, and then when I get to the end I click "Upload another file". ITookSomePhotos (talk) 17:12, 5 September 2021 (UTC)
Ok, I can reproduce this bug for uploads from the harddrive. It doesn't occur in the Flickr mode of the Upload Wizard but when I try to upload something from my computer, I get the same kind of popup "You are already uploading file ..." with the most recent filename I contributed. Despite of the message, the upload process will work though. De728631 (talk) 17:43, 5 September 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for confirming. Can we report this somewhere and get it fixed? Although, as you say, it seems not to actually prevent successful upload, it is nevertheless substantially non-ideal. OTOH, if it is so easily reproducible, perhaps it has already been reported multiple times? ITookSomePhotos (talk) 17:56, 5 September 2021 (UTC)
I reported it at Phabricator. That is the bug-tracking platform for MediaWiki. De728631 (talk) 18:19, 5 September 2021 (UTC)
Thanks very much for doing that. ITookSomePhotos (talk) 19:03, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

Regarding a picture posted on Wikipedia by an unauthorised person

Hi Team,

This is regarding an image with CC license that was posted on the wiki page by a person who is not the actual author of the image. I'm writing this as I came across the post recently and although was happy to see the image on wikipedia but the credits were given to a different person who actually had posted it on wikimedia. It seems to be taken by the person from my social media account and posted on wikimedia under his/her name.

Could you please help me with the process thru which I can get the proper credits for the image on the wikipedia?.

@Sush 2252: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/156 by trying to upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes) jpg image as a new user. Usually when someone uploads a smaller jpg image, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you created the image yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including original EXIF metadata. If you did not create the image, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the copyright holder license it on their official website or social media, or send the image and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. GIMP JPG export quality?

I recently uploaded a corrected version of one of my pictures, and in the GIMP export menu I decided to turn the JPG quality up to the maximum, past the quality of the original image, which made a 3 MB difference in file size. Is it worth it to do that? Does it make a difference? Henrysz (talk) 14:55, 7 September 2021 (UTC)

@Henrysz: no expert here, but I believe the higher quality setting means less new degradation will occur than if you had used the same setting as before. What difference it actually makes will depend on the nature of the image and what kind of reprocessing you did. For example if you had applied a noise-reduction filter to a photo, especially one targeted at JPEG artifacts, I’d expect the higher setting to better preserve those improvements. But it certainly won’t restore any of the data lost from previous compression. Regardless of how you export, best general practice is to keep your master/working file in a losslessly compressed (or uncompressed) format; otherwise it will gradually lose fidelity in each save–reopen cycle. The information loss from typical photographic images is much less noticeable than that from things like logos, diagrams, & maps.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:19, 8 September 2021 (UTC)

Is there any way to add several categories in the Pattypan spreadsheet?

Hi, the spreadsheet generated in Pattypan holds a Category column. However, the files intended for upload are liable to receive more than one category. I attempted to add more categories locally, but did not manage. Is there any way to add the categories locally in the spreadsheet generated, instead of adding further categories in Wikimedia Commons once the files have been uploaded? Changing the file type

Regarding the page File:UNESCO pdf.pdf, I have scaled it to the correct proportions and cropped it as a jpg file. When I tried to upload the corrected version, I couldn't do it because the file types didn't match. I ended up converting the jpg to pdf and uploaded it, but I'd rather have been able to change the file type. How would that be done? Upload it as a new file and then have an administrator merge it? Redirect the old file to the new file? ~Anachronist (talk) 16:53, 8 September 2021 (UTC)

You should upload it as a jpg file. Ruslik (talk) 20:52, 8 September 2021 (UTC)
@Ruslik0: That doesn't answer my question. The only way I could upload it as a jpg file is to create a new page. I am trying to update the image in an existing page, and I wasn't able to upload it as a jpg because the previous file type was pdf. So although I've already updated it by uploading a new pdf, my question is how would one normally change the file type of an existing file. Create a new page and merge or redirect the old one? ~Anachronist (talk) 21:50, 8 September 2021 (UTC)
You cannot change the file type for an existing file. If you want to upload a different file type, please upload a new file with another type extension. De728631 (talk) 22:24, 8 September 2021 (UTC)
I didn't want to upload a new file, because the image isn't mine, and I didn't want it counted among my page creations. All I did was correct errors in the existing file. But if it isn't possible, that's all I needed to know. ~Anachronist (talk) 23:08, 8 September 2021 (UTC)

Using an image in article, that has not been previously published but has not been made by the user

Hi everyone,

For an article I am drafting, I would like to use a diagram created by my boss and which has not been created by myself. The diagram has not been published online or in print previously and I have been given express permission by him to use it. How do I upload this to my article, whilst citing that he made the original diagram?

Thanks in advance — Preceding unsigned comment added by NablaUltima (talk • contribs) 09:41, 9 September 2021 (UTC)

please follow with your boss the procedure of COM:VRT. Your boss can give permission to publish the diagram by email. Elly (talk) 11:12, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
Or your boss can create an account just to upload the diagram and issue a license, or can publish it with an appropriate license on a web site clearly under his control. - Jmabel ! talk 15:24, 9 September 2021 (UTC)

What else is necessary to make my uploaded image legit?

Recently I improperly uploaded an image I named: Jack Orrison The Plainclothesman.jpg I thought that I could use a pre-1926 photo for educational purposes under "fair use" but I've been informed my upload will be deleted due to copyright restrictions. I do not want to go against copyright laws, and have been trying to obtain a licensing agreement for the Jack Orrison photo.

The photo appears in a research book (The Forgotten Network, published by Temple University Press), and the source of the photo is Photofest. I researched Photofest, and it appears to be a legit organization, so I emailed them asking about paying a fee so that the photo can be used in two Wikipedia articles. Here is part of their reply to me:

We supply images for editorial use only. Most of our images are publicity stills and can be used for editorial use without further permissions. Under "fair use". Wikipedia is completely editorial in nature, so no further permissions would be needed. Furthermore, the owner of Photofest provided this additional information. "The Dumont Network closed down in 1956. TV publicity photographs were not copyrighted, so there is no reason to believe that there is any limitation imposed on our image. It is in the public domain"

Seems wonderful, but I realize that is just what I was told by the accounting department of an organization that provides classic entertainment photos, and Wikimedia Commons has very strict rules to avoid any copyright violations. If I officially obtained the right to download this photo from Photofest, and I did a second upload of this photo, stating that DuMont's TV publicity photos were not copyrighted, I fear that I'd be told that wasn't good enough.

What is necessary for me to legally keep this photo in Wikimedia Commons? Karenthewriter (talk) 02:02, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

I'd like to suggest that a new category be created. This may help raise the standard of the presentation/the arrangement of galleries, the selection of images to be included and the informative descriptions of included images, etc. Example: Herrgottskirche (Creglingen)). In additions, it may indirectly influence the way pictures are taken so they can be selected and create a nicely layout gallery. Thx Mattis (talk) 16:38, 11 September 2021 (UTC)

@An onymous.23218: the page where you “registered” is for organizers, not general participants. But if you go to the India entry in the table there you will find links to the list of monuments and for uploading. (I suggest you use the former at first, because I believe more of the info will get filled in for you by the upload wizard.) If you have pictures from another country, use a link from beside its name there: entries are grouped by the subject country, not the photographer’s nationality. Anyway, if you use the appropriate campaign-specific upload wizard, those photos will be categorized as contest entries automatically; no additional ‘paperwork’ should be necessary.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:32, 12 September 2021 (UTC)

Yes, you can. At least this is highly likely. You can use {{Pd-old-70}} or similar tag on it. Ruslik (talk) 20:50, 12 September 2021 (UTC)
{{PD-old-70}} is not acceptable as a sole license for anything; as it says "You must also include a United States public domain tag to indicate why this work is in the public domain in the United States." For any thing published before 1926 in the US that you don't know the death year on, use {{ PD-US-expiredcountry = US }}. If it's more than 120 years old, use {{PD-old-assumed-expired}}.
There's no reason not to include a US license on a work published more than 95 years ago, as that's clearly PD-US-expired (or PD-old-auto-expired, in most cases where it's PD in its home, non-US, country.)--Prosfilaes (talk) 23:59, 12 September 2021 (UTC)

Photo description

Good day. Uploading photos to the contest Wiki loves sights through the contest list, in the gallery to each individual object. But in the category column, although it defines correctly, highlights in red and writes that one of the categories does not have a description page. Am I sure I entered the name correctly? Then, accordingly, I can end the action if I agree to ignore.

Which graph is meant? As if everything is filled in automatically.

Pretty sure it’s Ukrainian … anyway the question seems to be about a non-existent “Jewish Heritage“ cat that the WLM wizard added (per a menu choice?) to Olkko’s uploads (among many other users’—I found it well populated); I guess it to be some kind of special theme for this years’s contest. I created the cat in order to turn it blue, but I’m not sure whether or not it’s in the right place.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:36, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

Why is this public domain? It looks unpublished to me--the library has the negative--and hence under copyright for 70 years from the death of the author; looking at birth year, and File:Alan Tower Waterman.jpg (presumably taken as NSF and hence no earlier than 1951) I think it safe to say this photo was taken no earlier than 1951, and thus exceedingly unlikely to be out of copyright under life+70; for all we know, the photographer could be alive.--Prosfilaes (talk) 00:05, 13 September 2021 (UTC)

Deleting my uploads

Hii I mistakenly uploaded photographs on wikimedia through upload wizard, I want to delete them. Please help. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by YadavRupak (talk • contribs) 07:39, 14 September 2021 (UTC)

  • @YadavRupak: Assuming you mean your quite recent uploads, just add {{subst:My bad upload}} at the top of the file page, and it should be deleted promptly. You can do this with anything less than a week old. - Jmabel ! talk 15:03, 14 September 2021 (UTC)

  1. You need to be logged in in order to upload. I see you are not.
  2. If you still have a problem when logged in, try using Special:UploadWizard instead of cross-uploading from another wiki. - Jmabel ! talk 15:14, 14 September 2021 (UTC)

Right to use

Dear Sir, Dear Madam,

I am currently writing a text book on Relativity, and I would like very much to use one picture I saw on Wikipedia:

It is an illustration of apsidal precession. [Mpfiz]

https://aasnova.org/2017/07/12/wasp-12b-and-its-possible-fiery-demise/

It shows Mercury's perihelion precession.

My future book is a text book for science students, to be sold worldwide. Am I authorized me to include this picture in my future text book? If not, How should I proceed to obtain this authorization?

I remain at your disposal if you have any question.

Best regards,

Paul Bruma — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 5.189.203.236 (talk) 14:16, 14 September 2021 (UTC)

It is a key part of Wikimedia Commons that we don't need to have this conversation. Everything here is not only available under a free licence, but it's also described in such a way that you can use that free licence just by looking at its description page, you never need to ask first.
Looking at the licensing for it, it's an own work by the uploader and they have licensed it as {{PD-self}}, meaning they wish to place it completely into the public domain. That means you can do anything with it.
However it's also polite to (where possible) treat this more like a {{CC-by}} licence and to also credit the author, in this case as Mpfiz @ Wikimedia Commons or just "Mpfiz @ Wikimedia Commons" on paper. Andy Dingley (talk) 16:27, 14 September 2021 (UTC)

Also (but different)
Hi, the problem here is the same with both. They're old photos, you want to upload them. The descriptive metadata on their uploads isn't right, because I know the Commons upload tool is confusing to use. Sorry about that.
To be here, they need to be "freely licensed". See COM:LICENSING. That's an absolute.
This can happen in one of two ways (or both). Either the image is so old that it enters the "public domain" and no-one still holds copyright to it. That takes a _long_ time. It also varies by nation.
Secondly, the owner of the rights to this image can choose to release the image under a free licence. They still own the copyright, they just allow others to use it.
There's a (bad) problem on Commons in that when mistakes happen (and first uploads for new users are a nightmare, our system is very unfriendly) the reaction of some established editors and admins here is now to see that user as "the enemy" and so reasons must be found as to why their uploads can be deleted and their account banned, as soon as possible. This is what happens to many users here. We even have a policy that editors must not do this (COM:AGF), but that's ignored.
The date and source fields of the image description need to be changed. At present, the Commons uploader has set these as you having created the images just now. Obviously that's wrong. The real values might be something like "Circa 1930s" or "Pre 1941", as best you can, and "Unknown commercial photographer" or "Family snapshot".
Now we look at the licensing issue. Are they public domain by age? They might be. Some jurisdictions would permit that anything which (as here) has strong evidence to be >80 years old and produced by an unknown photographer is now PD. Commons has a blanket rule for this at 120 years. Sadly there is a problem. The "hostile editors" problem now kicks in. Having once (innocently) described these as "own work", there are editors here who will now no longer ever allow you to make any more correct statement, and would rather see you banned and these images deleted. That is a disgrace, but sadly that's endemic on Wikimedia. So "good faith" on accepting things like PD claims for old photos is in very short supply.
There is also an argument that if the rights are held by the family, you have inherited them, and you are at liberty to now issue a free licence, such as the {{CC-by-sa}} you have used. This would be your choice. If they're PD, then you can still do this, but it would mean little.
Please update the source, then let's talk further. Andy Dingley (talk) 12:57, 14 September 2021 (UTC)
Also, if you really mean that you intend to place those for which you have inherited rights into the public domain (meaning no need even to acknowledge who they came from) that would be {{Cc-0-heirs}}. If, however, you want a credit line, that would be {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}. - Jmabel ! talk 15:07, 14 September 2021 (UTC)
Good job demonstrating how to ignore COM:AGF. I personally find when my introduction to a forum or group is someone saying that the established users here are assholes, I don't think better of the person telling me that or of that forum or group, and don't feel like talking further.
We have a high copyright standard. I can not tell you how many times I've been dealing with a user who uploaded works as "own work" who then proceeds to make it clear they will tell whatever story means that Commons will keep the file. You could assume good faith, and try and understand that copyright matters for some of us.
No, the fact that he does not know the photographer does not mean that the photographer is unknown. The legal standard in some cases can be incredibly high, and certainly many photographs are properly labeled when published and then copied and copied without proper attribution.--Prosfilaes (talk) 02:16, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
  • If you think that the right response to finding an inexperienced user confused about uploads and copyright, and a few images with no evident problems in that respect, is then to trawl back over all their uploads for several years (which no one has ever raised as a problem before) and then tag the whole lot for speedy deletion without even any attempt at discussion with them – then you're part of the same problem.
We're lucky here in that the uploader is still around to respond. Usually this is how collections get wiped out altogether, because they're a few years old and the uploader is no longer watching out. Andy Dingley (talk) 11:37, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
  • Again, when I start posting to a forum, I don't tend to continue if Andy Dingley starts explaining to me about how everyone around here is jerks. Double if he doesn't seem to be listening to them, as I never said anything about speedy deletion.
Collections get wiped out because they have unclear copyright status and nobody is around to clarify the copyright status. Nobody has ever raised those files as a problem before, because nobody is looking at new uploads, in part because it's a pretty unthankful job. What do you want us to do about that? If it's ignore copyright status, make a policy proposal, don't abuse people just trying to do work around here.--Prosfilaes (talk) 19:41, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

Hi! I'm new here. I just wanna know if uploading a photo from other sites are illegal — Preceding unsigned comment added by IMjustANormalPerson (talk • contribs) 02:41, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

  • @IMjustANormalPerson: Most of what you find on the Internet does not belong on Commons because of copyright reasons. (Of course scope is an additional issue.) We accept only content that is in the public domain or (per COM:L) has a license that is free enough to allow both commercial re-use and derivative works. I suggest that you start by getting familiar with both of those concepts before you try uploading any image that you did not create yourself. - Jmabel ! talk 15:57, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

So, I took a screenshot of a piece of work created in the Medieval Ages and now inside the British Library and cropped it down to a specific illumination. There are many pictures from the same work posted in the Public Domain on Wikipedia Commons. Do I put this work as my own and who do I make the authors? Thanks! --TheREALSlavicElmo (talk) 03:14, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

@TheREALSlavicElmo: If the original work is really medieval (some countries have longer copyright protection, and the period may count down from the year the author died), then it is technically OK for your screenshot to be uploaded to here; although in most cases, a scan is preferred. Please use this template: {{PD-scan|1=PD-old-assumed|country=<Country code>}} when UploadWizard asks what copyright template should be used. Please apply {{Scan}} for the source, and author the original author, or use {{Unknown author}} to denote an unknown author, thanks!廣九直通車 (talk) 11:24, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

AUBURN CORRECTIONAL FACILITY

My edit keeps getting thrown out. In NEW YORK STATE, in AMERICA there was NEVER a “NEWGATE” prison. NEWGATE was in ENGLAND. In fact, they sent people BACK to England to NEWGATE. In AMERICA, AUBURN PRISON IS THE FIRST PRISON BUILT IN THE UNITED STATED. NEW GATE WAS NEVER IN THE UNITED STATES. Please edit that back with me as the editor of possible. Additionally, as convicts, we call Copper John, COPPER JANE since removing the “bulge”. Although the article does NOT mention this, I wanted to add that in as well as the name for the electric chair “SPARKY”, although after my first edit was changed back, I’m not sure it would get changed because people act as if they know this information for fact and changed it back…they have wrong information and are transferring it to Wikipedia, which is why people don’t like using Wikipedia…because people edit specifically to create disinformation. I noticed that AS SOON AS SOMEONE DIES, someone is in their grave, on Wikipedia, updating their death date. — Preceding unsigned comment added by BigFingerman42069 (talk • contribs) 19:03, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

I would like to report that this Wiki common image violates copyright. There are so many result when searching similar images in Google (i.e. 600+ results). If not, can the administrator help to convert my message to the corresponding place, thanks.--Pri11010 (talk) 22:01, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

  • @Pri11010: Feel more than free to nominate it for deletion. Instructions at COM:DR. TOO high of resolution? Kepler's platonic solids

Hi, I work in an academic library. We recently scanned and uploaded File:Kepler Platonic Solids.tif at a very high resolution. I tried putting it on the enwiki Mysterium Cosmographicum, but it took so long to load that I don't know if it was adding value to the page. Should I upload a lower-resolution version for ease of use? Leave the existing page as-is? Thank you, Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 17:25, 8 September 2021 (UTC)

  • .TIFF is always a bulky format. It's typical that archives and libraries who have resources justifying its use on quality grounds (this would qualify) will often upload two versions, a TIFF and also a JPG. For most uses, the JPG does the job more easily.
That said, this is a MediaWiki site. MediaWiki will itself convert pretty well from TIFF to JPG and so in use on pages, there's no real need to do this manually. Andy Dingley (talk) 17:55, 8 September 2021 (UTC)
@Rachel Helps (BYU): MediaWiki caches scaled-down versions of pictures, so while a page might load slowly the first time as MediaWiki generates the scaled-down version, it should be fine for everyone thereafter. The general rule on Wikimedia projects is that editors shouldn't worry about performance. If MediaWiki is slow at displaying thumbnails from large TIFFs, the Wikimedia Foundation pays people to make it faster. --bjh21 (talk) 11:04, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
That is very helpful to know. I'll put in the new image then. Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 16:22, 9 September 2021 (UTC)

How to reincorporate encrypted image dynamics over multiple virtual interface platforms

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to upload some photographs directly from my website and it seems I am having trouble with the de-encryption/re-encryption process within the nested virtual desktop I am using. Has anyone else had this problem? My next thought is to try adjusting my adaptive router configurations. I’ve tried eliminating my firewall bypass and manually tweaking the relay parameters, which doesn’t seem to resolve the issue. I know that I could of course screen grab the images and import them that way, but I want to preserve image quality. Thanks! Butftucker (talk) 01:34, 16 September 2021 (UTC)

@Butftucker: I'm pretty sure you've just written a bunch of meaningless technobabble here. If you're trying to upload an image directly from a website to Commons, presumably using Special:Upload, it really doesn't matter how your firewall is configured or how many virtual machines you're nesting, as your web server should just be talking directly to Commons. Apologies if I've misunderstood you; please try to clarify your use case with less jargon if that is the case. – BMacZero (🗩) 05:43, 16 September 2021 (UTC)

HMCS Prevost Official Ships Crest

File:Monotype font samples.png broken by some kind of change?

Not sure where the right page to ask/post this is but I noticed File:Monotype font samples.png does not render with the error message "Error creating thumbnail: File with dimensions greater than 100 MP". Since I assume that the file did work at some point, there seems to have happened some kind of change that no longer makes it render. Can this be fixed? Regards SoWhy 09:02, 14 September 2021 (UTC)

The thumbnailer doesn't like images with more than 100M pixels. I presume it used to be less restrictive, or we would have noticed. I've uploaded a smaller version which seems to have fixed it for the moment. If anyone has a better fix, please revert my change. Andy Dingley (talk) 10:33, 14 September 2021 (UTC)
Best fix would probably be to convert to SVG but that has been requested for six years now. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to do that. Thanks for the fix. Weirdly enough, it now shows the thumbnails for the bigger versions as well... Regards SoWhy 08:29, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
Max size on the thumbnailer is configurable, someone may have re-adjusted it back up again (but not noticed this thread).
Would SVG help? You'd have to embed the font and have that accessible to whatever was going to render it as a bitmap. On the whole, I think a pre-rendered bitmap of the largest size we can manage is probably more robust. Andy Dingley (talk) 11:40, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
@SoWhy and Andy Dingley: You're right, I didn't see this thread (I caught the one on COM:VPT though). That was phab:T291010, a side effect of trying to remove an extension thought to be unused. That change was reverted and everything should be back to normal.
As for SVG, you wouldn't be able to embed the font in the file. Only the freely-licensed fonts at m:SVG fonts can be used for security and copyright reasons. You could convert the text to a paths though. See Help:SVG#Fonts,_text for more on text in SVGs. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 22:43, 17 September 2021 (UTC)

@Inimesh: that plaque must not be very old; is there any reason to believe it’s not under copyright?—Odysseus1479 (talk) 02:10, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
@Odysseus1479: As far as I can tell, there were no photo restrictions in the Qutub Minar complex, unlike some other places in Delhi. I saw other information boards that have been uploaded to Commons, and thus followed suit. According to this website, India's freedom of panorama provisions allow "the making or publishing of a painting, drawing, engraving or photograph of a sculpture, or other artistic work, any other work of artistic craftsmanship, if such work is permanently situated in a public place or any premises to which the public has access". Inimesh (talk) 01:58, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
FoP does not generally apply to 2-D works, and I’ve seen many similar items from other Commonwealth countries deleted on that basis. Photo restrictions imposed by museums &c. are not related to copyright, so their absence makes no difference. But my concern is more about the text itself as a piece of writing (there‘s next to no creative expression in the design anyway), which is more than a few words and obviously the main subject of the photo.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 06:10, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
@Odysseus1479: So the question seems to boil down to whether this plaque, because it contains a fairly long passage of text, qualifies as a literary work. For one thing, no authorship or copyright information is present on the object. Also, with regard to plaques, Commons:Freedom_of_panorama says the following: "Sometimes, a literary work is a part of a building or sculpture or is presented on a publicly accessible plaque. In most jurisdictions, the literary work has a separate copyright which must be considered separately unless it is an integral part of the building or sculpture. A plaque describing the building or sculpture will not qualify unless the work is in one of the eleven jurisdictions which include an exception for literary works." Inimesh (talk) 07:24, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
It is a literary work. Authorship information is not needed for that, and copyright information has never been needed in modern India. I don't understand your point in quoting the FoP page; all it says that the literary work had a separate copyright and doesn't generally fall under FoP. Below, there's a table showing for all nations whether they have FoP for text, and India has a red x in that box.--Prosfilaes (talk) 00:20, 18 September 2021 (UTC)

Uploading public domain images

Is it possible to upload images from a public domain? This would be useful as some pictures have to be captured at certain times. Examples would be natural events, disasters, lunar eclipses, etc. — Preceding unsigned comment added by FizzoXD (talk • contribs) 04:14, 17 September 2021 (UTC)

Bulk recategorization request

Hi, there are about 150 files named "File:Rocque Map of London 1746 <*>.jpg". These files are all categorized as "Category:Old maps of London" and its sub-sub-sub-Category:John Rocque's 1746 Map of London. Is is possible to task a bot with removing the "Old maps" category from all files (and check that the "John Rocque's" category is actually assigned to all these files) ? Psychology Today giving enough attribution?

I notice Psychology Today has used a Commons photo, saying only "Source: Jidanni Creative Commons 4.0" with no way readers can find the source. Is that fair? If not, please tell them. Jidanni (talk) 12:43, 25 September 2021 (UTC)

@Jidanni: The attribution requirements for CC BY-SA 4.0 are set out in the licence, specifically in section 3(a). You can decide for yourself whether the publisher has complied with them. Personally, I think the only clear-cut contravention is that they've written "Creative Commons 4.0", which isn't the correct name of the licence, and haven't provided a link to the licence as required by 3(a)(1)(C). If you want to do something about that, that's a matter for you as the copyright owner. No-one else is in a better position to enforce your rights. --bjh21 (talk) 13:05, 25 September 2021 (UTC)

Deletion requests for my CC-BY photos (license change in 2021)

I have a large collection of Creative Commons photos on Wikimedia Commons that was uploaded by other users. When Flickr was popular about 10 years ago, I made lots of photos CC-BY. But I’d like to change my licensing now and I’d like to see if it’s possible for me to remove most of them?

If so, how would I go about doing that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Seeminglee (talk • contribs) 02:58, 18 September 2021 (UTC)

  • Sorry, but these licences are irrevocable.
You can stop offering these through Flickr any more under that licence, where they're from your account and under your control.
But what you can't do is control what happens if someone else has used that licence, and is hosting them and offering them correctly, under the terms of the licence they obtained them under. We have to do this, or else the whole licensing model fails. Andy Dingley (talk) 12:12, 18 September 2021 (UTC)

Salutations. VIACCOZ Anne-Marie, le 19.09.21. — Preceding unsigned comment added by VIACCOZ Anne-Marie (talk • contribs) 13:26, 19 September 2021 (UTC)

  1. @VIACCOZ Anne-Marie: You can find them all at https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:ListFiles/VIACCOZ_Anne-Marie&ilshowall=1
  2. They are not in any category related to him because you did not place them in any such category. For example, you put File:Exp. Musée jurassien des arts, Moutier, 2018.jpg in Category:Art (way too general), Category:Peintre (Jura) (almost certainly an error), and Category:Installation art. Please see Commons:Catégories.
  3. You personally are presumably not the copyright owner of your husband's work, he is. You can correct the statement about who is the author of the works on the individual file pages, but the legalities have to be sorted out by the process described at Commons:Equipe des répondeurs bénévoles. - Jmabel ! talk 18:57, 19 September 2021 (UTC)

Providing the source is insufficient. You need to specify a free licence that was granted by the copyright holder of the image, or provide a verifiable reason why the image is in the public domain. This is why you were notified about missing sources or permissions. De728631 (talk) 19:07, 19 September 2021 (UTC)

How to nominate pornographic content for deletion

Hello all, I would like to nominate some purely pornographic images on commons for deletion. Can someone please tell me how I can go about doing this? Thank you Сцитяаре (talk) 17:17, 18 September 2021 (UTC)

  • See Commons:Deletion requests for nominating images for deletion. As it's unclear what you mean by "purely pornographic images", note that human nudity and human sexuality are considered within project scope when they can reasonably be used in educational/artistic contexts; see Commons:Project scope. As Wikimedia's founder noted, "mere nudity is not pornography" -- Jimbo Wales [3]. Images like poorly photographed penis selfies, on the other hand, are generally considered not to have in-project scope usefulness as redundant and are generally deleted. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 17:52, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
To some degree, pornographic images are in scope; in an optimal world, Wikipedia or Wikibooks would have pages on the history of pornography with (preferably historic and authentic, but representative recreations if necessary) pornographic examples.--Prosfilaes (talk) 02:22, 19 September 2021 (UTC)
Jimbo seems like he has never read the law before. In many jurisdictions, nudity is indeed pornography, and illegal in some cases. Alpharts Tod (talk) 20:00, 20 September 2021 (UTC)
Well, @Jimbo Wales: is not a lawyer. I am, albeit retired, and I don't think he intended in 2010 to give a definitive dictum relating to all jurisdictions. Even so, he has made grave mistakes since. Rodhullandemu (talk) 20:14, 20 September 2021 (UTC)

Search feature

Hi, I wonder whether anyone can answer these questions.

(1) Does the ordinary search feature ("Search Wikimedia Commons" entry field, not the advanced search) use a combination of filenames and descriptions to locate content?

On uploading an image, you are asked to "Add your file to categories so as to make it easier to find." (2) However, is it correct that the ordinary search feature ("Search Wikimedia Commons" entry field) does NOT use categories? (3) Can/should you type anything into this category field, or should you only use categories that are already set up?

(4) On uploading an image, you are asked to "Add metadata", but this field does not accept names of small places that I have tried to enter. How does one add these? I understand that the ordinary search feature by default does not use structured data: you have to enter some magic keyword to make this happen.

(5) Assuming I get round to doing either for my images, which is more important, categories or metadata? ITookSomePhotos (talk) 17:23, 19 September 2021 (UTC)

Hi there. I think your questions No. 1 and 2 and partially 4 are best answered by reading Help:Searching and its link to the English Wikipedia search help. As to the other questions, here is what I would recommend:
3) Preferably you should use categories that already exist. However, if you feel that your photo needs to be put into a category that does not yet exist, you can enter a new category name which will cause a red link to appear on the file page. After that, you should then create the new category. Alternatively, you may create a new category before uploading your image so you can type in the name while uploading the image. Note also that new category names should match the pattern and style of existing names in a series of categories, e.g. "Category:N1234G2 (aircraft)" or "Category:John Doe (ship, 1995)".
4) If there is no entry yet at Wikidata.org, you cannot add this metadata to your image page at Commons. E.g. to enter the name of a small town to the metadata field, you would first have to create a new item at Wikidata with a label corresponding to the placename.
5) Categories are more important because they help people navigate through Commons, and a lot of metadata will be added by some bot later anyway. De728631 (talk) 17:56, 19 September 2021 (UTC)
@De728631: Thanks for your reply. I can't find anything very much about (1) and (2). Reason I ask is that I failed to find some of my content searching on quite specific words/phrases in the description and/or filename, but I'm thinking now that because they were recently added, perhaps they hadn't yet been "indexed" or whatever. Is that correct? Would there likely be a delay before the search feature would find them? Second point, regarding the categories, I'm looking at how to categorise places (towns, villages) and I must say I find it somewhat confusing. I did manage to navigate to Category:Places, then I found Category:Places in the United Kingdom and expected to find a long list of place names there, but nothing. Then I found Category:Places by place name, where there is a short list of place names ... but is that just all that have been created so far? If I want to add a new place in the UK, should I put it at Category:Places by place name or Category:Places in the United Kingdom? Or am I looking in the wrong place altogether? Also,is there some way to search all existing categories for a particular word or phrase, to find out whether something already exists somewhere? ITookSomePhotos (talk) 17:35, 20 September 2021 (UTC)
@ITookSomePhotos: I think "places" without any further descriptor won't get you far in terms of categorisation. You might want to start at Category:Populated places in the United Kingdom though and work your way down to the most specific category. Note also that there are Category:Cities in the United Kingdom vs Category:Towns in the United Kingdom and Category:Villages in the United Kingdom. Also, I'm sorry but I don't know the details of the search function to tell whether there is a delay after uploading new content. From my experience, however, the search does work very quickly. Without knowing what exactly you were searching, it is hard to answer your question though, so maybe you could give us one or two of your search phrases so we can check them. De728631 (talk) 20:52, 20 September 2021 (UTC)
Thanks. If I may say so, it is HIGHLY CONFUSING to have Category:Places -> Category:Places in the United Kingdom not being where one puts, er, places in the United Kingdom. Even Category:Populated places in the United Kingdom is crazily complicated, with multiple possibilities for anything. BTW, if I alight on a category, is there a way to get a "tree view" of where this sits in the category hierarchy? ITookSomePhotos (talk) 21:38, 20 September 2021 (UTC)
I'm not aware of any built-in tool that shows a category tree, but there is a somewhat complicated external method called vCat which takes arguments as url parameters and shows the entire category tree. Example: insanely diffuse category tree for Bristol. As to Category:Places vs Category:Populated places, I think the reasoning behind this solution is that a place can be any random location whereas a populated place is a type of settlement. See also the English Wikipedia Category:Places where the main article is the generic Location (geography). De728631 (talk) 22:06, 20 September 2021 (UTC)
Thanks. I think, if I may say so, that the category structure, and the means of navigation through it, is not designed for ease-of-use for newcomers. ITookSomePhotos (talk) 22:24, 20 September 2021 (UTC)

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Myshelov (talk • contribs) 19:25, 19 September 2021 (UTC)

Meaning of Derivative work

Ia have received some messages from JuTa saying that some images I have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons are "derivative work" but they are not: they are just images of certain people mentioned in Wikipedia articles. What should I do? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mjimenezale (talk • contribs) 08:21, 20 September 2021 (UTC)

E.g. File:AntonioGanRet.jpg is a picture you didn't take that you uploaded here. Derivative work may be not the clearest way to explain this. The problem is someone else took the picture. They had a copyright on it, and they or their descendants may still have a copyright on it. We need more details about who took the picture to figure out if it's actually in the public domain.--Prosfilaes (talk) 13:52, 20 September 2021 (UTC)
Consider three cases: a photograph of a natural object, which you took today; a very old photograph or drawing, which you scanned today, making as accurate a reproduction as you could; a collage of an existing photograph, still in copyright, which you then modify in some way.
The first of these is your creative work. You hold the sole copyright. You can freely licence this, if you wish, and upload it here.
The second (as you describe here) is not a derivative work. It is merely a mechanical reproduction. You create no new copyright in this. If the source photograph was in copyright, the new copy of it remains in copyright (but not your copyright). If the source photograph was old enough to be in the public domain, it is still in the public domain. Whether it can be uploaded here depends on the state of the original photograph (It must be either out of copyright and in the public domain, or the rights holder must agree to licence it suitably. You might be the rights holder, but usually not.)
The third of these is a derivative work. It involved some creative input to the new work, more than a more mechanical reproduction. It creates a new copyright (which you will then hold). If there was an existing copyright on the source images, then that remains. Such a work can be uploaded here if the source images are both identified and are free for use here, as if they were uploaded directly. One simple way to indicate this is to upload them here themselves.
JuTa is claiming that this mechanical reproduction is a derived work. I don't know why, that's obviously wrong. However if the only question is whether the source image is free for use, then this doesn't matter: we still need it to be free, even for simple reproduction. However the false claim of a derived work does tend to confuse things and I wish they would stop doing it.
What should you do? Well, you need to demonstrate why the source image is usable (see the thread above). Andy Dingley (talk) 14:40, 20 September 2021 (UTC)
File:Ultimos días del Cubano.jpg may be a derivative work, if you took a plain map and added the annotation. Either way, you need to show the origin and licensing of the source map. If you added the annotation, then it's worth stating that you added that too and (probably) consider that this addition was below COM:TOO, thus not attracting protection (or you could even add a licence, stating that the licence applied to the annotation work). Andy Dingley (talk) 14:45, 20 September 2021 (UTC)

@Alpharts Tod: Under the Berne Convention, pretty much everything that is eligible for copyright is copyrighted by default. It isn't a question of "why does it need a copyright." It's that it has a copyright and therefore to belong on Commons it needs a free license. - Jmabel ! talk 00:01, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
@Jmabel: I'm no copyright expert. But I hear a lot of stuff about copyrights that just is not true. I've never heard this before. How does the news use pictures from facebook? Other people do too. Loads. All of the world. Pretty sure public is public. "According to Facebook's Statement of Rights and Responsibilities, any image posted with the Public setting carries the implicit acknowledgment that said photo is available for access and use by anyone" Souce Alpharts Tod (talk) 08:35, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
  1. "The news" uses pictures from Facebook either by permission or on a fair use basis. Commons does not ever host images on a fair use basis, because we always5 intend that general reuse be possible, which would not be the case on a fair use basis.
  2. Being "sure" of something that isn't true doesn't make it true.
  3. The linked article may be accurate about reusing content within Facebook (I don't know Facebook's policies that closely) but certainly posting publicly on Facebook does not waive rights about the image being reused outside of Facebook. - Jmabel ! talk 20:42, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
On the last point, from a quick look at Facebook’s ToU, one problem I see is that the licence lasts only as long as they host the material, so users can pretty much revoke it by taking their content down (or designating it as non-public). OTOH we require licences to be valid in perpetuity.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 22:41, 21 September 2021 (UTC)

Red ink on photos I posted on Commons

I posted some photos on Wikimedia Commons and am now attempting to make use of them on a Wikipedia article. However, they come up in red ink. For example:

Western Trails Museum, Knott's Berry Farm, Buena Park, California, 2021.jpg

Why? — Preceding unsigned comment added by DTParker1000 (talk • contribs) 00:18, 21 September 2021 (UTC)

@DTParker1000: you need to include the File: prefix before the filename, ex. [[File:Western Trails Museum, Knott's Berry Farm, Buena Park, California, 2021.jpg]]. clpo13(talk) 02:52, 21 September 2021 (UTC)

What do I have to type to fulfill the licence requirement

Hi,

I'm trying to upload a picture of El Plato del Bien Comer which is a graphic tool from the Mexican Norm-043. As it has been crated and delivered in 2005 to promote and educate the population on nutritional matter, I believe it is free of copyrights. What do I have to type to fulfill the licence requirement?

Thak you

Hi, I'm new to uploading files and can't figure out how to cite "original work" when I have created a "derivative work" using SVG. To use an example involving maps, do I just need to cite the organization, e.g., OCHA maps by UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) or the organization and the map, e.g., Afghanistan - Location Map (2013) - AFG - UNOCHA.svg by UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA)? Hi, please can someone read my user page on here and do what it says on there for me, it's much appreciated if someone helps me on this. Speedcuber1 (talk) 01:57, 21 September 2021 (UTC)

@Speedcuber1: Your user page asks for two userboxes to be added to your English Wikipedia user page. Since you're blocked from editing English Wikipedia, it would be contrary to English Wikipedia's policies (en:WP:EVADE) for someone to make those edits on your behalf. Perhaps more pertinently, though, your user page already contains those userboxes, so adding them would seem pretty pointless. --bjh21 (talk) 10:14, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
@Bjh21: I meant making it so that they are the only 2 userboxes on my user page, is it really too much to ask? Speedcuber1 (talk) 17:38, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
@Speedcuber1: Yes, it is too much to ask. You're blocked from editing English Wikipedia, and that includes getting other people to make edits for you. --bjh21 (talk) 18:12, 21 September 2021 (UTC)

@Gianfranco Grieco: "la pagina che parla di Viggiano" => che pagina? Qualcosa qui su Commons? Nella Wikipedia italiana? Forse it:Viggiano? Use of {{PD-US-no notice ad}}

Everything I have uploaded to wikimedia commons so far has been disputed so I am coming here to ask before I upload. I am trying to find an image of Willie Bobo for his Wikipedia article.

I have found an image in a 1966 copy of Cash Box. It seems that it should meet {{PD-US-no notice ad}} licencing as it is an advert without a copyright published in a periodical between 1926 and 1977. I was inspired by the image on the Otis Redding page. Would appreciate some in put as I seem to put my foot in it a lot at the moment. Vladimir.copic (talk) 06:56, 21 September 2021 (UTC)

@Vladimir.copic: Hi, and welcome. The periodical is clearly marked "Copyright © 1966 by The Cash Box Publishing Co., Inc. All rights reserved. Copyright under Universal Copyright Convention." in the bottom left corner of page 3. Was it registered and renewed? Please see COM:HIRTLE.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 19:40, 29 September 2021 (UTC)
Unfortunately, I don't see any way this could be public domain based on the available information. As Jeff pointed out, there is a copyright notice on the first page of the magazine. Per COM:HIRTLE, anything published in 1966 with a notice is copyrighted for 95 years from publication, so the magazine and its contents would become public domain in 2062. It's possible that the advertisement photo was published elsewhere previously without a notice, but that would require some extra legwork to determine (also see COM:US#Copyright formalities for caveats). You could ask at COM:VPC for help researching it. clpo13(talk) 19:57, 29 September 2021 (UTC)
I browsed the link provided by Clpo13 and saw no information specific to advertisements. The background I previously read leads me to believe that magazines are considered collective works in which the magazine's publisher does not hold exclusive copyright. Verve Records would hold copyright over the advertisement independent of the copyright of Cash Box Publishing. Therefore, lack of a copyright notice for the advertisement would make it PD even if the parent publication is still copyrighted. Am I wrong in this assumption? I'm quite certain this site hosts a considerable amount of content with circumstances exactly as I just described.RadioKAOS (talk) 21:06, 29 September 2021 (UTC)
Thanks RadioKAOS, clpo13, Jeff G.. I was basing my assumption on this image being public domain as it comes from an advert without a copyright notice in an issue of Billboard which had a copyright notice. Vladimir.copic (talk) 21:49, 29 September 2021 (UTC)
@Vladimir.copic: I wasn't even aware of that template. I mistakenly thought we were just talking about {{PD-US-no notice}}, which doesn't mention ads. I apologize for the confusion. While current copyright law says that a single notice can serve to cover an entire periodical, I don't know what the case was in 1966. The 1973 copyright compendium seems to suggest individual contributions needed separate notices, but it doesn't appear to mention ads. I suppose it makes sense, though, since contributions such as articles and photos may either have their own copyright or be under a contract granting rights to the publisher of the periodical, but ads would be entirely separate and therefore needed their own notices. You wouldn't expect, say, Billboard to own the copyright to a Gillette advertisement, for instance. Anyways, if there's precedent, I think it should be fine. clpo13(talk) 22:19, 29 September 2021 (UTC)

Am I being spoofed/hacked?

Hello. I uploaded an image this morning that I believe to be public domain (BobbyFranklin_-_Cleveland_Browns) based on similar images on the Wikipedia pages of this player's teammates (Jim Brown, Johnny Brewer). I don't believe there should be an issue.

Regardless, I received the following email:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Apfenn1#File_tagging_File%3ABobbyFranklin_-_Cleveland_Browns.jpg.

When I click on the "help desk" link in the "Getting Help" section I am taken to what I consider to be an extremely offensive image.

So, two questions - 1. Is this a legitimate email, and, if so, why would I be sent to a link such as this - or am I just being hacked?

2. If there IS an issue with this image, how do I fix it? The other images (Jim Brown, Johnny Brewer) are from the same set of images. I know for certain that whoever might have posted the picture of Johnny Brewer did NOT create the image, but I don't believe it should be removed.

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Apfenn1 (talk • contribs) 16:22, 26 September 2021 (UTC)

@Apfenn1: Regarding 1: the message was legitimate, but you happened to visit this Help Desk just after it had been vandalized. It was cleaned up about a quarter of an hour later. I'm sorry about that. --bjh21 (talk) 17:20, 26 September 2021 (UTC)
@Apfenn1: To solve the problem with File:BobbyFranklin - Cleveland Browns.jpg, you need to find a reason why the picture is free for anyone to use for any purpose. You've claimed that the copyright owner has released it under the CC0 declaration. If that's true, we'd need some evidence of it (hence the "no permission" tag). If there's some other reason why the picture is free, you should tag the picture appropriately. For a photo from the 1960s, the likely reasons are that it was published before 1978 without a copyright notice ({{PD-US-no-notice}}) or that it was published before 1964 and its copyright was not renewed ({{PD-US-not-renewed}}). Do you know if either of those was the case? --bjh21 (talk) 17:31, 26 September 2021 (UTC)
@UTC: Thanks for your reply. So the photo was published before 1978 without a copyright notice, ie, {{PD-US-no-notice}}. How do I go about including this to make sure the photo is available for use? Thanks for your help. The only images I've included before are ones I've taken myself, so I'm new at this end of things. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Apfenn1 (talk • contribs) 18:43, 26 September 2021 (UTC)

¡Saludos!

How do I replace the Harte Hanks logo on my page to the new one? — Preceding unsigned comment added by CBellaro (talk • contribs) 13:35, 28 September 2021 (UTC)

  • @CBellaro: You don't say what site "your" page is on, but if it is on Wikipedia or another WMF site, ;and assuming both logos are on Commons, then in the wikitext simply replace the name of the old image with the name of the new one. Remember that this may also call for updating a caption. - Jmabel ! talk 17:35, 28 September 2021 (UTC)

Became autoconfirmed

How can I became autoconfirmed user on wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by OverloadedTech (talk • contribs) 19:34, 28 September 2021 (UTC)

By waiting four days and making 10 edits. Ruslik (talk) 20:52, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
@OverloadedTech: each project has different rules, and user rights are not transferable from one to another. On the Italian Wikipedia it’s apparently seven days and 50 edits.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:09, 28 September 2021 (UTC)

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Mozartecus (talk • contribs) 20:02, 28 September 2021 (UTC)

How do I link to the public accessibility of a file added to Wikimedia Commons and later to an article?
If a file (for example, an image) is published in the public domain on the Internet, then it is public, without attribution. How can I legally add it to Wikimedia Commons and use it in revisions of Wikipedia articles?

I need help getting a 1952 headline and photo from the NY Herald Tribune April 12, 1952 approved for Commons and eventually incorporated into a wikipedia article on one the subjects in the photo (Paul Carroll, who died in 1954.--Dwc451degrees (talk) 23:04, 28 September 2021 (UTC)

@Dwc451degrees: Hi, and welcome. Where did you get it? Why use the PDF format?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:43, 29 September 2021 (UTC)
I suspect Herald Tribune copyrights got renewed, and unless someone did something active to license it, it's probably unfree. The NYC papers and their successors were pretty careful about renewing copyrights, much more so than elsewhere in the U.S. - Jmabel ! talk 19:06, 29 September 2021 (UTC)
But I now see this is an Associated Press photo. Probably better to ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright. Someone will know the status of AP photos from that era. I'm going to guess it's even more likely to have been renewed than the Herald Tribune. - Jmabel ! talk 19:13, 29 September 2021 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) It looks like the photo is actually from the Associated Press, so it probably has a copyright status separate from that of the paper. I'd think the AP would have been very scrupulous about maintaining copyright status, but this article suggests maybe not, at least for older photographs (see also [6]: "It was found that only a few images were registered for copyright and those copyrights were not renewed."). In order to be sure, we'd probably need to know who the photographer was. As Jmabel said, COM:VPC would be the place to ask. clpo13(talk) 19:19, 29 September 2021 (UTC)
    • The NY Herald Tribune ceased publication in 1966, so non-renewal of copyright is certainly a possibility, but would need to be specifically researched. As noted the included photo is not original to the Herald Tribune, but clearly credited to the Associated Press, still in business. Unless you can get specific evidence that both the photo and the newspaper did not have their copyrights renewed, free license cannot just be assumed, so this should not be on Commons. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 17:50, 30 September 2021 (UTC)

how to delete already uploaded photo

Hello,

I was uploading photos to wiki monuments but by mistake uploaded incorrect photos. Two monuments have the same name. I have photos of both but uploaded incorrect ones to one of them. How do I delete these?

Thank you,

Monika — Preceding unsigned comment added by MonikaLisa2 (talk • contribs) 18:17, 29 September 2021 (UTC)

@MonikaLisa2: if you've uploaded them recently (within the last seven days), you can edit the file information page and add {{subst:my bad upload}} to the top of the page. An administrator will be along shortly to delete them. clpo13(talk) 18:21, 29 September 2021 (UTC)

the 3 incorrect photos are only in my contribution page and uploads. I do not see a way to change the location of where they were supposed to be taken. Any ideas are appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MonikaLisa2 (talk • contribs) 18:49, 29 September 2021 (UTC)

@MonikaLisa2: Hello there. Clpo13 just explained this to you on their talk page, so please try to stick to one discussion instead of asking the same question at multiple places. De728631 (talk) 18:53, 29 September 2021 (UTC)

What do I do if the picture is a picture they took of themselves and posted on social media?

Same as the subject... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Quezergue (talk • contribs) 22:12, 29 September 2021 (UTC)

  • @Quezergue: Then you certainly know who the copyright holder is (the subject of the selfie is the photographer, so they own the copyright). If you can get them to issue a "free license", then we can use it. The easiest way for them to offer such a license would be to indicate the specific license in the same place they posted their picture, e.g. "I release this under a CC-BY-SA 4.0 license; just credit me as the photographer." If you or they want a more formal process, there is COM:VRT, which is of course a lot more complicated than them writing a single sentence. - Jmabel ! talk 00:51, 30 September 2021 (UTC)

Issue with tif file transparency

A few uploads I've done of tif files have a second page of all black. Are there any tutorials or guidance on how to convert an image and upload it without a background (read: transparent) and only a single transparent page to wikimedia (using GIMP)? I've used GIMP to make an alpha channel and delete the background. Then locally the image looks like it has a transparent background, but the second page of all black appears for some reason after upload and sometimes a white background appears after it loads in wikipedia. See en:Charles Stewart (New Jersey politician) and File:Col. Charles Stewart signature.tiff as an example. --Engineerchange (talk) 20:29, 27 September 2021 (UTC)

@Engineerchange: I’ve seen spurious second pages in (full-colour, non-transparent) TIFF uploads from Photoshop, and my solution was to resave them with the GIMP. That obviously wouldn’t help in this case! When I downloaded the signature file, neither of those programs would open it, but Apple Preview did. Are you using a special compression method or something? Are there additional masks or layers in your working file aside from the alpha channel? Any channels more that 8 bits deep? Or perhaps the file is damaged in a way that only some programs can repair or ignore. If your original is in colour (the image came out in RGB when I resaved it in Preview) maybe try converting it to grayscale. FWIW I usually prefer the PNG format for a subject of this type; I believe there are far fewer variations or ‘flavours’ than with TIFF, and for sparse or limited-colour images the files can be very compact. BTW I do not see a white background on the enWP page (using Safari), or when hovering over the preview here, but strangely it does show in the history thumbnail at the bottom.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:02, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
