Personal insult or lulz?
How is this user allowed to write "User:Jameslwoodward (The unholy offspring of lightning and death itself. Never engage this Dragon. - Hello. This sentence comes from the How to Train Your Dragon animated film and is said about Toothless, the film's protagonist. Toothless was a dragon, as such people got the wrong impression of it being a merciless killer, calling it Night Fury. They were, of course, wrong. This sums up what happened between James and I. Problem with correcting spelling on Category…
Hi! Please can you help me? I got into a mess doing what I thought would be a simple spelling correction on a category (I couldn't see the 'Move' button at all). I was trying to create category "Bust of Robespierre by Claude-André Deseine, MRF 1986-243" because there was a typo in it previously (category "Bust of Ropespierre by Claude-André Deseine, MRF 1986-243"[sic]).Silverwhistle (talk) 18:52, 1 August 2017 (UTC)

Translations of languages names in Upload Wizard
Hello. I upload many files via Upload Wizard with my interface set to Ukrainian language. At the one stages of uploading you have to add descriptions in different languages. You can choose a language from drop-down list. I have noticed that some languages names are translated to Ukrainian and some are not. Also there are mistakes in alphabetical order of those languages. Where can I edit this to make it correct? -- Tohaomg (talk) 15:30, 26 July 2017 (UTC)
- Ping @Matma Rex: for attention. — Speravir – 23:08, 26 July 2017 (UTC)
- I don't use the Upload Wizard, and I'm slightly guessing here, but the order is probably by ISO 639-1 Language Code. As for what's translated & what isn't it's probably a matter of whether anyone has provided a Ukrainian translation in some master file. - Jmabel ! talk 00:49, 27 July 2017 (UTC)
- @Tohaomg: The available language names are based on CLDR data, the list of languages that have an Ukrainian name defined can be found here: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/diffusion/ECLD/browse/master/CldrNames/CldrNamesUk.php. If no name in Ukrainian is defined, the standard fallback chain is used (for Ukrainian, it just falls back to English; until recently (phab:T39314), it used Russian first), and if that doesn't find any name either, the language autonym is used (the name of the language in the language itself). If you want to add any missing ones, you'd have to upload a code patch to Gerrit (I could do that for you if you give me a list of language codes and their Ukrainian names).
- The sorting is done using PHP's natcasesort() function (it's not based on language codes, but rather on the language names that are shown), which is unfortunately probably not correct for most languages not using the Latin alphabet :( I reported this as phab:T171978.
- Matma Rex (talk) 17:25, 28 July 2017 (UTC)
- Huh. (1) Yes, that sort will probably be a mess for anything non-Latin. (2) Any idea why Russian was dropped? I would think any monolingual Ukrainian-speaker would much more easily decipher Russian than English. - Jmabel ! talk 17:35, 28 July 2017 (UTC)
- I've read that if you don't know Portuguese, try Italian instead of Spanish, because the Portuguese will resent you for using Spanish. Given the recent issues between Ukraine and Russia, I can imagine that implying that Russian is an appropriate substitute for Ukrainian would annoy a lot of people.--Prosfilaes (talk) 18:18, 28 July 2017 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: If you want the whole long story (this was first requested in 2012), you can find it at phab:T39314, but my understanding is that it was indeed mostly for cultural reasons. And since MediaWiki's translation to Ukrainian is very complete, the fallback was very rarely useful – it mostly sometimes kicked in for new messages if they were translated to Russian faster (which in turn made it more difficult to notice missing translations at a glance, since Latin-alphabet text sticks out much more noticeably than incorrect Cyrillic-alphabet text). Matma Rex (talk) 20:20, 1 August 2017 (UTC)
- Glad to know it's actually not much needed, because deciding for "cultural reasons" not to have comprehensible text really seems to me like cutting off your nose to spite your face. - Jmabel ! talk 23:00, 1 August 2017 (UTC)

How to edit or make images like these?
Hello, I am Thomson02. I have seen some images like you can see below, and I found some inaccuracies and information not uploaded. To make sure the viewers can be informed with updated information, I would like to also know how to make images like below.
— Preceding unsigned comment added by Thomson02 (talk • contribs) 12:46, 29 July 2017 (UTC)
- Two of these are just PNGs, which you create/modify with pretty much any graphics tool. The other three are SVGs, which is better for this sort of diagram. SVG is a bit like HTML. As with HTML, it is often hand-coded but can be created by various software. If you are at all comfortable with simple code, I suggest you download one of these and look at it in a text editor. If you want to make small edits, you'll probably be able to do that (at worst with some googling for documentation of the SVG format). Your browser should be a perfectly good SVG viewer to check your results. I strongly recommend that after making tweaks, you upload under a different name as a derivative work. - Jmabel ! talk 16:15, 29 July 2017 (UTC)
- Hello. Jmabel, I am a new Wikipedia user and I also have question like Thomson02, but I have some specific questions. Can I load up images if I have written permission from the photographer?
Hello. I have written an article on Australian actress Mercia Deane-Johns. It is now in the main encyclopaedia and I would like to add on some images. If the photographer gives me permission can I use the image on Wikipedia? How should I prove that I have this permission?

- Hey Novak123. See COM:CONSENT for instruction on how they can email to OTRS to verify that they release the rights to the images. TimothyJosephWood 16:22, 2 August 2017 (UTC)
- Perhaps the most important thing to know is that they need to grant a "free license" for the image (allowing anyone to reuse it, including creating derivative images). It's not enough to say we can use it on WMF projects. -Jmabel ! talk 18:02, 2 August 2017 (UTC)

Publishing a logo for which I have the permissionn of the author
Hallo. I'm creating a page on Wikipedia for an artist (painter), and I need to upload some images such a logo and some pictures of the paintings. Of course I have the permission by the artist himself to use her images. The upload system give me an error message when I try to upload the logo, peerhaps beccause it recognises that the image has been modified by an image editor (just to adjust some lights and shadows).
How can I solve the problem? Thanks very much for helping — Preceding unsigned comment added by Davidepasini (talk • contribs) 11:17, 3 August 2017 (UTC)
- Three things:
- It's not enough that the copyright holder gives permission to use the images on Commons, Wikipedia, and other WMF projects. They must provide a sufficiently free license, allowing anyone to use the image, including commercial use & derivatives.
- Because the permission comes from a third-party copyright holder, that copyright holder will need to go through the process described at COM:OTRS to send proper permission.
- It's not clear from the above but when you say you are doing this for an artist: if you merely mean about the artist no issue, but if you are doing this on the artist's behalf (whether paid or unpaid), please see en:Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. At the very least, you need to disclose your conflict of interest on Wikipedia. (If you are referring to a Wikipedia other than the English-language one, similar, but not always identical, considerations apply. Each Wikipedia makes its own rules.) - Jmabel ! talk 14:50, 3 August 2017 (UTC)

Using images from mil.ru
Hello, I used Google Images filtered with "free to use, share or modify", and found some images from mil.ru that I would like to upload here on Commons. For instance some of these: http://mil.ru/rws2017/photo/more.htm?id=39965@cmsPhotoGallery
Are these OK to upload? If OK, does this apply to all other pictures posted at mil.ru? If they are OK, what is the correct procedure when uploading? I.e. what license? Should I use either

- "This file is in the Public Domain for some other reason".

- For your information, in case you already do not know, there are several Creative Commons licenses that arent allowed in Wikimedia Commons, like licenses with restrictions in derivative works (the "ND") or commercial use (the "NC") or the CC Public Domain Mark when used alone (for being a revocable "license" and not being a true license). For more on this read Commons:Creative Commons copyright tags (a little obsolete as the CC Zero is permitted in Commons) or Commons:Licensing.
- For this specific site we already have a template with all the information. Simple past {{Mil.ru}} in the license information, when uploading content from mil.ru, in case that content if authored by the russian military. Tm (talk) 02:00, 4 August 2017 (UTC)

unable to contribute two photos on the Fibula (brooch) page
Hi,
I collect fibulas and have what must be a significant collection. I enjoy the Fibula page so much, and wish to contribute two images representing pieces that are lacking on the page. You'll see I only have uploaded the two images. The cloak pin would go with the mention "Fibulae replaced straight pins that were used to fasten clothing in the Neolithic period and the Bronze Age." and the violin bow would go with the mention Bronze Age Fibulae/the first fibulae design.

Wikimedia Commons is just the media repository, in this case for these two images you’ve uploaded: File:Bronze cloak pin ca. 2200 BC.jpg and File:Violin bow fibula .jpg.
- Apparently you have meanwhile successfully added your content into en:Fibula (brooch).

Copyright advice requested
Following a request here, I have created an English-language version of a Spanish-language SVG map on English-language Wikipedia, and uploaded it here on Commons. The file I modified is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Central_balkans_1373_1395V1.svg , and says "This work has been released into the public domain by its author, PANONIAN at English Wikipedia." I have uploaded it via the "basic form", which used to be easier to use than the various "special upload" forms and the "upload wizard". But I don't know how to fill in the "Licensing:" field. Some options I considered:
- "I don't know what the license is". This is true, but experience shows me that this will result in the upload being deleted, regardless of the information I provide in the other fields.
- "Own work, all rights released (Public domain)". This would probably work, but would be a lie. It's not my own work that I'm uploading.
- "This file is made available under the Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication." This is maybe closer to the truth, but is still a lie. I have no reason to think that PANONIAN, who created the file at en:Wikipedia, has even heard of CC0 1.0.
I've chosen the last of these. If that's unacceptable, I accept that the image will need to be deleted. But in any case, I'd like know the recommended way of specifying a license when uploading an image derived from someone else's work. Maproom (talk) 17:02, 6 August 2017 (UTC)
- You should choose "public domain" but not your own work. Ruslik (talk) 18:52, 6 August 2017 (UTC)
- - and I see that you have altered the license information from {{Cc-zero}} to {{pd-author|PANONIAN}}. Thankyou. So a solution is to upload the image using one of the options offered by the upload form, and immediately edit this to whatever it says in page that I've derived it from. I'll remember to do that in future. Maproom (talk) 19:50, 6 August 2017 (UTC)

Uploading sources
Hi there,
A page I looked at for a school is out of date as it is showing that they have a new 6th form. The 6th form has now closed, and although the school has not mentioned it on their site, they sent out a letter to parents announcing that it was closing.
This isn't my work, but I am wondering whether, since it aims to inform people that the 6th form was closing, it can be uploaded to wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SRickson (talk • contribs) 18:35, 7 August 2017 (UTC)
- When you say "a page", do you mean an article on Wikipedia? And you end your question by asking about uploading to Wikipedia.
- This isn't Wikipedia. This is Wikimedia Commons (the media repository of the Wikimedia Foundation, which also umbrellas Wikipedia).
- What are you proposing to upload? The letter? The letter is probably not public domain, and is not your own work, so unless you can get a free license from the author of the letter (and provide that as described in COM:OTRS, you can't upload it here on Commons.
- You can cite the letter in Wikipedia without uploading it, just like you can cite a book. - Jmabel ! talk 22:04, 7 August 2017 (UTC)

- DanTD, you seem to be alone with this issue, so noone can really help you, just guess. My guess is that your problems could be caused by an old cached version of Hotcat, probably the defunct one. Try this link: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Gadget-HotCat.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript and then reload this page bypassing the cache (it may also be, that you additionally should do this somewhere else in Commons), read note after my signature. — Speravir – 01:18, 15 August 2017 (UTC)

I added this file: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Joseph_Lupton.jpg
it has been nominated for deletion. why? Thanks for any info. Srbernadette 202.45.119.125 23:55, 9 August 2017 (UTC)
- Somebody thinks your CC license is invalid, since there's no license from the original author of the picture. However, it's probably in the public domain, since even if it was unpublished until recently, it's an anonymous work created in the US before 1897. --ghouston (talk) 00:03, 10 August 2017 (UTC)

Rename file in timely fashion?
Is there a way to rename or delete files in a timely fashion? A small error shouldn't become a big problem. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Geordie.birch (talk • contribs) 08:42, 10 August 2017 (UTC)
- If you have filemover privileges, it's easy, but as far as I can see you haven't done nearly enough here to be granted those. (By the way, remember to sign your remarks on talk pages with ~~~~, which will be changed into your signature.)
- You can tag the file with {{Rename}}. When it is renamed, all references to it in WMF projects will be updated, and a redirect will be left behind for outside references. Won't be instant, but since a filename is mainly just a formality, the delay is not usually a big problem. - Jmabel ! talk 15:09, 10 August 2017 (UTC)
- It looks like Geordie.birch is already aware of {{rename}}, but using the template correctly will make rename requests easier to handle. The correct usage here would have been to substitute "rationale number" with an actual number from this table. 3 would have been the most appropriate. 1 would also have worked. Looks like the rename requests have been fulfilled. I also took the liberty of renaming File:Stotm Bay 01.jpg to File:Storm Bay 01.jpg. —LX (talk, contribs) 16:07, 10 August 2017 (UTC)
Uploading pictures
Dear Mr./Mrs.,
I would like to ask if it is possible to upload a picture from a scientific article? I wrote a an article that is connected with cancer and in my opinion, a picture would be really helpful for potential reader. I woudl like to ad this picture https://www.jci.org/articles/view/69219/figure/1 called Immunoediting.

- Those illustrations are clearly copyrighted, and there is no indication of a free license, so unless you were to obtain a relevant license from the author of the image and provide that as described at COM:OTRS, we cannot accept that image here.
- There is nothing to stop you from making an image of your own expressing the same concept, and uploading that. - 15:12, 10 August 2017 (UTC)

- Well that is weird... For me it just doesn't load at all. -mattbuck (Talk) 17:06, 10 August 2017 (UTC)
- I've done some testing on the June one. I was able to blank it, at which point it loaded, so there's presumably some problem with the content. However that content is just a template which is working perfectly fine on Category:May 2011 in Germany. I'm stumped. It was Tohaomg's bot which made the edit, perhaps they can shed light on this. -mattbuck (Talk) 17:13, 10 August 2017 (UTC)
- I tried purging the July page, but it had no effect; the page was completely empty and had no HTML source. Editing the page and pressing save without making any changes, however, made the page show up. Not sure if the "Lua error in mw.wikibase.entity.lua at line 37: data.schemaVersion must be a number, got nil instead." messages have anything to do with the problems. —LX (talk, contribs) 17:36, 10 August 2017 (UTC)

Flickr license
On my talk page I am told that File:David Klarner, George Polya, Nicolaas G de Bruijn.jpg is an Image without license. On the flickr page where I got it, it is labeled Public domain (with the "no cent sign" symbol). So when they tell me that I "can edit the file description page to license it under one of the allowed licenses" I am at a loss since the set of applicable licenses seems to be empty. - It is not clear while a photo made in 1973 should be in public domain? Has its author released it? Ruslik (talk) 19:53, 7 August 2017 (UTC)
- It is pretty easy for someone to make a false statement on Flickr when dealing with a photo where they are not the author, so we tend to be pretty cautious about those unless it is from a known, reliable account like a city archivist or such. - Jmabel ! talk 22:06, 7 August 2017 (UTC)
- File:George Pólya ca 1973.jpg is approved by Wikimedia and was extracted from the exact same photo as this one. Cannot the permission carry over to the full photograph?
- The original photo was taken by Kara Lynn Klarner, the wife of David A. Klarner, on the stated date. She sent the photo to the mathematician Thane Plambeck who uploaded it to Flickr. I have emails from both of these people stating these facts. Mrs Klarner is elderly and I doubt if she would be up to filing the necessary forms to Wikimedia. Failing that option, what else can I do.--Toploftical (talk) 16:02, 9 August 2017 (UTC)

- I would forward the emails per OTRS & explain the decision. As long as the emails are clear about providing a specific license, and aren't just "you can use it in Wikipedia", the OTRS people will presumably understand and approve. - Jmabel ! talk 15:36, 11 August 2017 (UTC)

- Create an account. See COM:OTRS for how to demonstrate that the account is really you and so it has permission to upload your artwork; also, you'll probably want to note your real identity on the user page of the account. For anything you license, make sure that you understand the license you grant. If you upload artwork from that account before you have an OTRS ticket number, make sure to put {{Subst:OP}} as part of the text of the upload. - Jmabel ! talk 07:52, 12 August 2017 (UTC)
Yale Art Gallery
I am uploading several pictures from the Yale Art Gallery; they placed their pictures in the public domain (http://artgallery.yale.edu/collections/objects/6891). - We probably should make a template specific to Yale Art Gallery if we don't already have one. That template should link to http://artgallery.yale.edu/using-images (and probably an archived version of that page for stability, if there is one). It's clear that the underlying works are simply PD based on age. The link would be to demonstrate that Yale Art Gallery is also placing their photos in the public domain. - Jmabel ! talk 14:57, 4 August 2017 (UTC)
- yeap. Can you do this? best wishes-- Udimu (talk) 15:03, 4 August 2017 (UTC)
- I've created a draft at Draft:Template:PD-Yale-University-Art-Gallery. There may be a need for two distinct templates here: one for faithful reproductions of two-dimensional works (where the photo itself would not merit copyright, the underlying object is in the public domain, and hence any attribution to the Gallery is a courtesy) and one for other photographs, such as those depicting three-dimensional sculptures (where the photo itself would involve enough creativity to merit a copyright of its own, so attribution to the Gallery is mandatory). I suggest you bring my draft to Commons:Village pump/Copyright where someone can finalize it, possibly into two distinct templates to cover these two distinct cases. - Jmabel ! talk 21:50, 4 August 2017 (UTC)

Procedure to delete a Category
I ADDED:
{{Delete |reason=The category name is meaningless, I moved the only image. |subpage=Pelargonium 'Amrilight Pink Splatwo' |day=10 |month=August |year=2017 }}
TO: Category:Pelargonium 'Amrilight Pink Splatwo'
AND CREATED: Commons:Deletion requests/Pelargonium 'Amrilight Pink Splatwo'
I cannot find any trace of the request being made (besides my contributions log).
What am I doing wrong? Or is it impossible to delete categories? User-duck (talk) 06:16, 13 August 2017 (UTC)
- If you go to Category:Pelargonium 'Amrilight Pink Splatwo' and click on the text that says "Click here to show further instructions", there were several steps that you didn't follow correctly or didn't follow at all:
- You created the deletion request subpage at the right place but didn't use the code as instructed. This is important for when the nomination is included in the list of ongoing deletion discussions.
- It looks like you completely skipped step 2. This is the step that ensures the nomination is added to the queue to be processed.
- It looks like you also skipped step 3: notifying Uleli on their talk page.
- I've fixed all the issues, so there's nothing you need to do at this point. These things would have been a problem regardless of the type of content nominated for deletion. Categories can be deleted and nominated for deletion just like any other content, but they are often discussed at Commons:Categories for discussion instead. —LX (talk, contribs) 09:43, 13 August 2017 (UTC)

- Signing your posts is required on talk pages and it is a Commons policy to sign your posts on deletion requests, undeletion requests, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). Thank you.

In the US, federal works are PD (see Commons:Copyright_rules_by_territory#Works_by_the_US_Government -- and note that even there, "I paid taxes to them" doesn't matter), but works of the states aren't in general, and even those states that do release certain works as PD, I'd be surprised if universities were included.--Prosfilaes (talk) 02:22, 14 August 2017 (UTC)

There couldn't be a much clearer conflict of interest than starting a Wikipedia article about yourself, and if you are notable enough to merit a page, presumably someone else will eventually write it.

Am I missing something, or is this a category we should add? - Jmabel ! talk 04:57, 21 August 2017 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: Interestingly, it seems that the term Ships Ladder is also used on-shore for steep ship-style staircases, mostly in industrial contexts (e.g. [1], [2] Youtube: "DIY: How to build a Ships Ladder"). So I guess we should have Category:Ships ladders, but keep it separate from Category:Jacob's ladders (nautical). --El Grafo (talk) 14:49, 21 August 2017 (UTC)

JPEG thumbnail broken
As of today, the thumbnail of File:Pink-house-charleston-sc1.jpg is rotated and stretched. The JPEG looks fine on Firefox. I tried removing the EXIF rotation tag and purging the cache, yet it tries to rotate it. Can anyone help? Thanks, '⎆ 19:12, 21 August 2017 (UTC)

Numerous renames passed with improper basis/reason
Hi I would need help!
Recently, i have been cleaning up and fixing up articles and images within the english wikipedia as well as the commons for several Metro Manila Articles. It has come to my attention that this specific image [3] was renamed several times without any proper justification from the 5 naming criteria reasons. I also looked at both requests if they asked the permission of the original uploader to no avail. The last rename was even weird as it was renamed citing Criteria number 5 and was moved with the justification of reverting the rename done by a blocked user which clearly was not the case as it proceeded with a different name. In light of this, I would like to ask assistance on what to do as based on my understanding, a rename must not be done if the original name would suffice not unless at the discretion of the original uploader and should a revert be requested it must be under the prior acceptable name which in this case is the original name set by the uploader.
Thanks! Korean Rail Fan (talk) 02:03, 3 August 2017 (UTC)
- First, the permission of the original uploader is not required. Second, the second rename was justified as it corrected a clear error: MRT-2 -> LRT-2 because these is no any MRT-2 line in Manila. So, only the first rename seems to be somewhat questionable. Ruslik (talk) 19:51, 3 August 2017 (UTC)
- I see, but if the original uploader @Josephdilangan: contests the name as i see it was the name in his original picture in his flickr page, will it affect it? Korean Rail Fan (talk) 14:48, 6 August 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you for the ping, given these circumstances that both users changed my image filename without prior consent and proper reason as i believe my naming is not offensive and meets the wiki criteria, if the file name would not be reverted to my designated name which is my right as the original uploader and subsequently as the photo taker, i would widthraw my image and ask for its deletion instead. Josephdilangan (talk) 03:04, 7 August 2017 (UTC)
- Deletion on what grounds? The license is not revocable.
- Sorry, but stability of filenames is not a matter of any right of the uploader. It's simply a matter of, all other things being equal, we try to keep links constant. While some people may have made poor choices in changing filenames, they have not infringed your rights. - Jmabel ! talk 04:04, 7 August 2017 (UTC)
- Deletion on the grounds that i own the picture and decided to upload it here? To be honest im kinda disappointed with how things work here resulting to me semi-retiring. But yeah i think i would request a delete of the image instead as the owner i think its my right to do so. Josephdilangan (talk) 04:55, 7 August 2017 (UTC)
- @Josephdilangan: Certainly, that is your right to create Commons:Deletion requests/File:LRT-2 Manila train towards Katipunan Station.jpg. I have exercised my right to vote keep there. — Jeff G. ツ 13:54, 7 August 2017 (UTC)

@Josephdilangan, Ruslik0, Jmabel, Davey2010, and Korean Rail Fan: This file has been kept. Now, what should its name be, and why? — Jeff G. ツ 11:29, 16 August 2017 (UTC)
- Well it's since been renamed to File:Manila Line 2 train approaching Katipunan Station.jpg which I think's fine, If I knew what the train was then maybe the train number could be used (IE 12345 on the Manila Line 2 approaching Katipunan Station.jpg) but FWIW I don't have an issue with the now current name, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 15:46, 16 August 2017 (UTC)
- @Jeff G.: I have to agree with Davey2010, given that it satisfies both the need to describe the image properly and to allow the original uploader's request, the current name would suffice. Korean Rail Fan (talk) 04:29, 17 August 2017 (UTC)

"Cite this page" Bibtex entry is rendering wrong
The Bibtex entry style of the "Cite this page" page for any image is not showing the LaTeX code ok, as the code inside is somehow breaking the code block.
You can see it in any "Cite this page". An example: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:CiteThisPage&page=File%3AAlmendro_%28Pozoamargo%29.jpg&id=121642928

About 5 photos which are tagged ...
Good morning Help desk,
I am Laramie1960 and five of my photos have been tagged, saying I do not have the permission to upload them - it says I have not the copyright - no permission. These are the links to the pages : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juliette_Benzoni and this one here : https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%A9rard_Chambre
I had been very surprised at that and could not understand why I have no permission. Also it says on that page where my photos are now added that I am a new User, which is wrong! I am on Wikipedia since at least 2011. Never had any trouble and try to thank all Wikipedias helpers who correct my mistakes.
The first photo that of Gérard Chambre had been uploaded by me in 2012. I even had a friendly discussion with someone from Wikipedia Commens at that time - and all was fine. I am the webmaster and a personal friend of Gérard Chambre the actor who sent me by email his personal photo, so that I may use it for whatever I think is necessary. www.gerardchambre-tribute.ch The photo of Gérard Chambre, is also on his website I have his personal permission. You can follow the link to his website and you will find it there. The date can be seen because that is a digital photo.
The photo from the graveyard is my personal photo, which I took at the funeral of the deceased Juliette benzon (2016).I saw that Wikipedia found all the pages where that photo can be seen, good - the image is on Facebook and at least two websites. I am the owner of one of the websites and of those Facebook pages. A friend of mine (official webmaster of the French website of Juliette Benzoni, Frédérique Aznag) I sent my photo to create an image as it is now - we wanted to write on my photo the address of the graveyard for the millions of fans of Juliette. The author wrote millions of books and is especially in France still very popular. I had seen on other pages of stars that they had done that and I thought it an excellent idea.
The picture with Juliette Benzoni (Infobox) from 1963 shows her in her office, (the company Editions Trévise does not exist anymore) I have no idea who took that photo. I cannot ask the owner, Juliette Benzoni. The French author who was a close friend of mine died last year! That photo was in a box for over 50 years! I even changed the colour to Sepia because it was not so clear anymore. She shared all her material with me. You will find the proof of my words on my official website www.catherinedemontsalvy.ch or also on my Facebook pages.
The photo in the garden, I scanned from an old magazine 1985 I had bought long ago. There were three pages with an article I have even translated for my English Catherine website see link here: http://www.catherinedemontsalvy.ch/English/History/Press/juliette-benzoni-media-3.htm - also you can even see the signature the author put on the last page for me. I had no idea we cannot upload a scanned photo this old, otherwise I would not have uploaded it. I am sure the photographer does not work at Jours de France anymore; I have no idea how I would have to get in contact. He would surely not remember the photo back from 1985.
I have deleted myself the photo where the author receives her AWARD. Though that photo was also given to me by the late author Juliette Benzoni. There were no names on the said photos, the one from 1963 and 1998. They were probably given in person to the author at that time. Maybe she even paid them to take photos.
Please Help desk, I am sure you find a good solution for me. I am convinced there are exception in cases like that. I meant no harm and was sure I had done a good job. I love Wikipedia and think it is one of the best inventions in the last Century. I am looking forward to your hopefully positive answer.

How to set preferred subtitle language
Hello, there is a way to define a preferred language for subtitles as additional parameter of the URL of a video loaded in Coomons to let the video start such subtitles?
I know that I van set the language by clicking on the CC icon, but I wish to send a URL to people that has low, even no, familiarity with such feature and I wish to have a URL that is straightforward to the expected language for such people.

cancellazione voce Fabio Pastori illustratore dinosauria artist
Grazie infinite,
Cordialmente,
--Fabiosaurusrex (talk) 22:37, 17 August 2017 (UTC)Fabio Pastori

- @Speravir: There were two problems with that file. I addressed them serially. First, I unsquished (fixed the aspect ratio), but got the wrong orientation. Second, I fixed the orientation, swapping the width and height parameters as I normally do for 90 and 270 degree rotations. Experience has shown me that the second fix works, despite how the interface and preview may look. I did not track what (if anything) CropTool did to the EXIF metadata or embedded thumbnails. Novice question re Art
Hello! This is probably a very basic question, and I apologize. I did do some searching, but was not able to find an answer.
There was an artist who sculpted and painted wooden birds. He died in 2001 (if relevant). My family owns many of his original, unique pieces (purchased in the 1980s). I think the answer is probably no, but is there a way that I can upload any pictures of the art? Alternatively, could I just take a picture of his signature from the bottom of the sculptures? Thank you! --El cid, el campeador (talk) 15:29, 10 August 2017 (UTC)
- Hi El cid! No need to apologise. It is better to ask if you're unsure. Copyright – the right to specify how a creative work is copied and distributed – is an immaterial right that is separate from physical ownership of actual copies or originals. In most jurisdictions, the sale of an artwork does not imply a transfer of copyright. Most likely, the copyright belongs to the artist's heirs. To upload pictures of the artworks, their permission would be required.
- Signatures are eligible for copyright protection in some jurisdictions and ineligible in others; see Commons:When to use the PD-signature tag. —LX (talk, contribs) 16:33, 10 August 2017 (UTC)
- And El cid, el campeador, as far as the signature, there's no reason to treat this signature differently from the same person's signature on a document. As long as you get a closeup of the signature, the only relevant copyright issue is what LX mentions: whether the signature can be copyrighted. Nyttend (talk) 03:31, 21 August 2017 (UTC)

Actualization not happening
Hi, I uploaded this two poll graphics about Costa Rica's election process. Thing is, my idea was to have actualized every time a new poll appears. But now I notice that even as I re-upload a new version the photo in the articles do not get actualized no matter what I do. As you can see here, it shows the old version. But weird thing is I remember that in other photos like parti flags if they are change in the file they get change in the articles that use them. Why that didn't happen here? anyone knows? is a system problem or is a photo problem? --Dereck Camacho (talk) 22:08, 20 August 2017 (UTC)
And actually even here shows the old version, in case you wonder here in the links you can see the new versions with new poll data added.

GIF expert needed
I notice on this MET site a sequence of 7 pictures of the first solar eclipse made in 1854, by the Langenheim brothers (of which I am working up an off-line draft on to create a new article soon). Can these individual pictures be turned into a GIF by a Commons expert? Then this GIF I could use in the new article I will be creating in the near future. It will be my 500 DYK article! I uploaded to Flickr the sequence made into a movie I found online. This continues loop is how I would like a GIF movie so that I could use in my new Wikipedia article. Cancel request! Copyright help regarding File:Lettice Fairfax.jpg
I need help. I thought this picture was available to Commons. It isn't? --Vsuarezp (talk) 20:04, 21 August 2017 (UTC)
- I don't understand your question. How is it "not available"? Are you just referring to the fact that when you uploaded it without licensing information, the system indicated that it lacked licensing information? Or do you mean something else? - Jmabel ! talk 20:31, 21 August 2017 (UTC)
- Sorry my english failed. I mean, I uploaded this photo to Commons thinking it was allowed. The original image is on NYPL website and it doesn't includes license. --Vsuarezp (talk) 06:31, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
- Its copyright status depends on the date of the first publication. Ruslik (talk) 20:33, 21 August 2017 (UTC)
- Given that it shows Lettice Fairfax looking young, it's a pretty safe bet it is pre-1923, probably by a decade or more. She was born in 1876. And even if it were somehow just after 1923, there's about zero chance of ephemera like this having its copyright renewed. - Jmabel ! talk 22:42, 21 August 2017 (UTC)
- I am more concerned with UK copyright. Ruslik (talk) 18:00, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
- Ruslik, it depends on the legal definition of "unknown" in UK copyright law. If the author is unknown, we're fine; anything pre-1947 is {{PD-UK-unknown}}. NYPL provides the creator's name when it is known (see [4], for example), so clearly they don't know it; as they're professionals, I would trust their judgement in concluding that this is an unknown work. My only concern is corporate works — how does the UK handle them? Are they their own class of items, as in the US (see the last sentence of Commons:Anonymous works#United States), or are they simply treated as being the works of the employees who created them? If the former, we need to know the standards; if the latter, the work is anonymous and thus PD-UK-unknown. Nyttend (talk) 21:59, 22 August 2017 (UTC)

British listed building links
The 'More images' links generated by the following templates do not work. They have been broken for at least the last few days.
- Template:Listed building England
- Template:Listed building Northern Ireland
- Template:Listed building Scotland
- Template:Listed building Wales
For example, go to Category:Stonehenge, find the box with the text "This is a category about listed building number 1010140. (More images)" and click on More images. The link leads to a blank page.

- Are you saying that the page may be blank if there are no images in the database? I used Stonehenge as an example because its fame makes this unlikely. I can find no pages where these links work. The corresponding Dutch (see File:Dordrecht bibliotheek.jpg), USA (see Category:Union Station (Jacksonville)) and Ukrainian (see Category:Lviv Opera House) templates appear to have the same problem. (These are listed at Commons:Monuments database/Indexed images.) Is is unclear where the images would come from. The image in Commons:Monuments database says "The database connects the images on Commons with monuments lists in Wikipedia via the monuments ID", which suggests that this is only for images on Commons. Perhaps this link is intended to list Commons images with the same monuments ID, but we already have Categories to do this. I think the link should be removed from the template. I could try to do this, but I haven't edited templates before and this would be an exposed place to start. Is there a conventional venue to propose this sort of change (equivalent to a Wikiproject talk page)? The talk pages of these templates are probably rarely watched. Verbcatcher (talk) 00:59, 24 August 2017 (UTC)
- I could remove the links in the templates, it’s fairly simple (for me), but I think, we should wait for an reaction of one of the developers. For the empty Stonehenge: The result for Tower Bridge is not vast, but far from what I would expect: https://tools.wmflabs.org/heritage/api/api.php?action=search&srid=1357515&format=html – from the almost 40 000 search results for hastemplate:"listed building england" slightly more than 100 images are about the Tower Bridge: search results. — Speravir – 02:44, 24 August 2017 (UTC)

Question for Richard David Ramsey about Canadian National Railway Wiki page
Hi,
first of all, I would like to thank Ramsey for his contributions in Wiki. I just like to know one reference in Canadian National Railway. In this page, Ramsey mentioned that "Properties of the Canadian National Railway in the United States serve in many instances as routes for Amtrak. Pictured is the Amtrak station in Hammond, Louisiana, refurbished with a modern passenger platform. This segment of the Canadian National Railway was built in 1854 to form part of the New Orleans, Jackson and Great Northern railway, which later became part of Illinois Central.[citation needed]" I actually need the citation. Would someone be able to find the citation for the 1854 year of the Canadian National Railway built?
Thank you

- Richard David Ramsey hasn't been active even on Wikipedia for a while. I'm guessing he is/was the Southeastern University professor of that name who apparently had a pretty serious head injury a couple of years ago (among other things, he uploaded photos of that university, and everything on his profile is congruent with that, as is the date of his last contributions), so if your question is specifically directed at him, you may be out of luck. Ikea in Commons
Hello, all/ Can please someone explain why some Swedish people can push swedish categories about museums? I Cannot change this amount of categories, it is impossible to clean this load of unclear categories. I do not see the point if every person is starting this way of creating categories in different laguages? Does someone has a vieuw on this matter? thanks;--Carolus (talk) 03:51, 25 August 2017 (UTC)
- Livrustkammaren och Skoklosters slott med Stiftelsen Hallwylska museet is the name of a government agency. The English version of the agency's web site is titled The Royal Armoury and Skokloster Castle with the Hallwyl Museum Foundation, so that seems like a fairly official English name.
- Not all government agencies, museums, churches etc. have official or established names in English, and even when they do, the general rule of thumb that category names should be in English does not seem to be fully enforced. Thus, we have categories like Österreichisches Staatsarchiv (National Archives of Austria), Nederlands Scheepvaartmuseum (National Maritime Museum) and Yilanli kilise (Snake church or Church of Saint Onouphrios).
- I don't see this as a huge problem as long as we don't have multiple categories for the same topic. —LX (talk, contribs) 15:03, 25 August 2017 (UTC)

Descriptions in Otomi?
Hi! I have a colleague in Querétaro (Mexico) who is doing a photography project with two small Otomi communities in his area. We would like to know if there is some way that we can put descriptions in the Otomi language (code- oto) along with Spanish and English, although it does not seem to be on our list of languages. Is there some kind of workaround?--AlejandroLinaresGarcia (talk) 19:18, 21 August 2017 (UTC)
- In terms of descriptions, mostly a matter of creating a template {{Oto}} analagous to {{En}} and {{Es}}. - Jmabel ! talk 20:27, 21 August 2017 (UTC)
- Jmabel, I created it, using {{description|oto|2={{{1|<noinclude>abc</noinclude>}}}|inline={{{inline|}}}}}<noinclude>{{internationalization template doc}}</noinclude>, which was simply the content of {{Ike-latn}} with "ike-latn" replaced with "oto". However, it just returned "oto" everywhere instead of "Otomi"; this is analogous to {{Fr}} returning "fr" everywhere instead of "French" or "Français". Apparently we have some sort of chart where codes of active languages are mapped to their names, but I don't know what it is. Unless we can get that, we might try using "otomi" instead of "oto". - AlejandroLinaresGarcia, I investigated this, and unfortunately the template that these language templates use to add the language name/colon/machine-readable language tags (i.e. {{Description}}) relies upon the
{{#language:...}}
parser extension to function correctly, which in turn uses mw:Extension:CLDR, which relies upon translatewiki:CLDR, which in turn gets its data from the Unicode Consortium's Common Locale Data Repository project, which unfortunately has not yet added support for the Otomian languages. Obviously you could simply replicate the style of the other description language tags with markup like'''Otomi:''' an Otomi description here
. Unfortunately that has the downside of not translating the word "Otomi" into the reader's preferred language. I'll code a custom implementation for Otomi at {{Oto}} that does not rely on the chain of dependencies that ends at the CLDR project, but unfortunately that means we'll need to supply our own translations of "Otomi" into the various languages supported by Commons. —RP88 (talk) 01:54, 23 August 2017 (UTC)- OK, the template {{Oto}} is now functional. If you would, please edit Template:Oto/i18n to add translations of the word "Otomi" into additional languages (and you may want to review the ones I added, as I am no linguist). —RP88 (talk) 02:28, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
- wow! a bit complicated! But I get the basic idea. I will work with my colleague and see how much we can do. The event is next month. Thank you so much!AlejandroLinaresGarcia (talk) 20:05, 23 August 2017 (UTC)

- This may be complicated by the fact that ISO 693-3 splits w:Otomi language into nine different languages with their own codes. CLDR is more likely to offer support for those languages instead of the macrolanguage that is signified oto. Possibly we should be using one of those languages, if they really are distinct languages that aren't really mutually intelligible, that is two people who speak Otomi may find each other's descriptions unintelligible. I know this is a hard problem for any but those handful of languages with clear written standards, but should this really be oto, or perhaps otq – Querétaro Otomi, or some other tag?--Prosfilaes (talk) 01:11, 28 August 2017 (UTC)

I've been having a lot of trouble accessing Commons and files hosted on it recently, over the past 2-3 weeks. Tiny print on Commons pages
In very recent days, all Wikimedia Commons pages are loading with very tiny print fonts (possibly 6-point based on the appearance). This has been happening only very recently, with no prior incident that I can remember, and it is only occurring on Wikimedia pages. Because it is only manifesting on these pages (and apparently all Wikimedia pages that I can find), I don't think it is in issue with my browser or platform settings, although I have checked those. Also, because the problem is general to Wikimedia pages, it is not convenient, nor would it be a solution, to simply Zoom the text for all page viewings on this site.
I am not a registered user of the site (although I do access it frequently), nor have have I contributed content to this or any other Wikimedia section before, so I don't know if this will reach any person who can help. I hope it will find the right person! — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2604:2000:DFC0:10:6D60:160A:A907:EBD5 (talk) 21:21, 9 August 2017 (UTC)

From en:Copyright law of the Philippines#Works of the Government: "On the other hand, no copyright shall be applied in any work of the Government of the Philippines. To exploit such works for profit, prior approval from the government agency or office should be made. Such agency or office may impose payment of royalties. It is not required to seek prior approval or conditions for the use for any purpose of statutes, rules and regulations, and speeches, lectures, sermons, addresses, and dissertations, pronounced, read or rendered in courts of justice, before administrative agencies, in deliberative assemblies and in meetings of public character." This doesn't seem to fall in the latter category, so the rights granted would not include commercial use; we normally require that (that's why CC-NC licenses aren't accepted). - Jmabel ! talk 23:53, 29 August 2017 (UTC)
- If it's public domain, but you still have restrictions and royalties, it seems like a non-copyright restriction. However, I don't think being public domain in the Philippines would stop it from being automatically copyrighted in the USA. Perhaps it would be public domain in countries that apply the rule of the shorter term. --ghouston (talk) 00:22, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
- Perhaps for the purposes of US copyright, you could claim it has been released to the public domain by the Philippine government. --ghouston (talk) 05:53, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

The Moorish Bazaar (discrepancy with two versions of the same image)
On wiki commons, two images entitled the Moorish Bazaar can be found. One gives the artist as Rudolf Ernst while the other gives the author as Edwin Lord Weeks. After having a look around on Google, I believe that the latter is correct. BronHiggs (talk) 03:19, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
- @BronHiggs: Which images? — Jeff G. ツ 11:10, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
- Must be File:The Moorish Bazaar.jpg and File:The Moorish.jpg. The style looks to me more like Weeks (meaning I agree with BronHiggs), but I have no source for that claim. - Jmabel ! talk 14:44, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: Multiple websites attribute the work to Weeks. I have only seen the painting attributed to Ernst in two places; one an unreliable blog and two on wiki commons. The following are website examples of attributions to Weeks (1) Artnet, (reports of auction results) http://www.artnet.com/artists/edwin-lord-weeks/the-moorish-bazaar-wjEvMJdN2__heqxeZ_pW_Q2; (2) The Athenenum, http://www.the-athenaeum.org/art/detail.php?ID=74713 and many more. The book, Edwin Lord Weeks: 90+ Academic Paintings by Daniel Ankele and Denise Ankele uses the painting as an illustration and attributes the work to Weeks. I am fairly confident that the work should be attributed to Weeks and that the image which attributes Ernst is in error. Stylistically, the work has little in comon with Ernst's paintings- but I am no expert in these matters. I have simply provided information about a discrepancy - it is up to Wiki Commons to decide what to do with it. BronHiggs (talk) 21:28, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
Is this image actually public domain?
I found this image on Flickr https://www.flickr.com/photos/hwmobs/20097068212 listed with "Taken sometime in 1913, Public domain". If possible I would like to upload it to Commons. But how can it be proved that the image actually is public domain? Sauer202 (talk) 15:29, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
- You can upload it using the license {{PD-old-80-1923}}, on the basis that the photographer is unknown. There's no evidence by image searching that the photograph is in use anywhere else, apart from this scan on Flickr. --Fæ (talk) 17:50, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
ultima foto caricata no copiryght
- No one has accused it of being a copyright violation but on the other hand, if you are in the photo how can you be the photographer? - Jmabel ! talk 22:49, 29 August 2017 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: I know nothing about this photo or Stefano.1991, but it's quite common for cameras to have a time delay option for the shutter. The photographer can set the camera up on a tripod and aim it, set the focus, exposure, etc., click the shutter, and go into the scene before the picture is taken. The camera's "click" sound announces that it's done. This is not new technology; my father had it in film cameras in the 1960s and before. --Thnidu (talk) 02:35, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
- @Thnidu: Of course it is technically possible to do such a thing, but take a look at this picture: would you say that there is any detectable chance that is how it was taken? - Jmabel ! talk 15:33, 31 August 2017 (UTC)

My deletion request is malformed - help!
Commons:Deletion requests/File:Salt Lake City, United States (Unsplash su0rzSQ7rqs).jpg. This is in the "malformed category". I couldn't do it automatically because the "Nominate for deletion" wasn't showing up on the left tool bar after repeated attempts to get it to show up! Kalbbes (talk) 01:52, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
- I fixed it. regards --JuTa 02:47, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
- @Kalbbes: Please don't start any other DR for a DR, or place multiple delete tags on the same page. What were you thinking? — Jeff G. ツ 02:56, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
- Jeff, I'm very sorry for causing trouble. I was trying to follow directions for delete tags when the toolbar link is missing. Didn't mean to place multiple delete tags. Please forgive. Kalbbes (talk) 13:59, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
- @Kalbbes: I accept your apology, and I forgive you. Perhaps those directions you followed were not clear enough, and should be revised. Where did you see them? — Jeff G. ツ 14:21, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
- Jeff, Commons:Deletion requests/Listing a request manually. I first tried to duplicate a request tag on my own, since the "Nominate for deletion" wasn't showing up on my toolbar. I'm not sure which was malformed. I'm not good at following Commons directions. I still can't figure out Cat-a-lot, and I am getting discouraged. Even though I have around 200,000 edits since I started last fall, I'm still a newbie and for me the Commons is not as enjoyable as it was. Thanks for your help. Image deletion
How to delete a wrongly uploaded image. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sarosh Lodhi (talk • contribs) 07:19, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
- User's only upload is File:T24 aka Ustad Tiger.jpg. Andy Mabbett (talk) 12:57, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
- If on day of upload, add {{Speedy}} to the image page. See the template link for details. Otherwise you can use the 'Nominate for deletion' link under 'Tools' on the left hand side of the normal viewing page. Releases to Commons are irrevocable, unless some mistake was made with regard to copyright. --Fæ (talk) 12:59, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
Copyright help regarding File:Daya_Shankar_Kulshreshtha_1.jpg
I am Daya Shankar Kulshreshtha a Retired Professor of Physics from University of Delhi. I wish to upload my own image (photo of myself) taken solely for the purpose of uploading it on my wiki bio page and I have all its copyrights. What should I write in the column of licensing so that it is not deleted. The other possibility is that I transfer the copyrights of this image (photo) of mine to Professor Harald J. W. Mueller-Kirsten who wrote my wiki bio. Please help me with the upload of my image (photo) of myself, and kindly give me clear instructions which I should follow for the above said purpose !!

Author name
My user name is Susan Slater. I want to use that as the 'author' name. I have for some, but for some reason, some of my photos indicate 'KangaJpn' as the author. I must have entered that before, but I would like to revise those to read 'Susan Slater'.
What should I do? Thank you for your help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Susan Slater (talk • contribs) 11:12, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
- @Susan Slater: There only seemed to be three such images, so I've edited the attribution manually. Thank you for your contributions! Andy Mabbett (talk) 13:01, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
Watermark of website on the image
Hello While uploading a jpeg file to commons can there be a watermark of any sort on the image?
