First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Dear Filnik,

I have no idea how to add the license. I probably forgot to do it but how can I change it now? You can see that I gave away any rights (and I took the photos). --Yoavd 11:13, 13 March 2008 (UTC) I hope I did it correctly. --Yoavd 12:33, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Yoavd!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. BotMultichill (talk) 13:08, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your image Borot_remelia.JPG[edit]

I have seen your photo File:Borot_remelia.JPG. Could you please add info where the photo has been taken such as country, area/city? thanks, Wouter (talk) 08:56, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, The photo was taken in Israel, near Arad (south part of Israel). --Yoavd (talk) 06:59, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Yoavd,
thanks for your nice photos from Israel. However, you've uploaded several images that show single or pairs of people prominently besides or in front of buildings etc. Many of these people look as tourists or private citizens, anyway non-notable persons, since they aren't even mentioned in the image description. Examples are: File:Gethsemane Jerusalem3060.JPG, File:Gethsemane Jerusalem3065.JPG, File:Gethsemane Jerusalem3061.JPG, File:Gethsemane Jerusalem3064.JPG, File:Dominus Flevit Church3023.JPG, File:Weizmann Institute of Science43.JPG, File:Gethsemane Jerusalem3075.JPG.
Such images are of little use for others as the depicted people have no meaning for them and as the images may be strongly restricted due to personality rights of the depicted people. (In my country you wouldn't even be allowed to upload such images.) I've now tagged many of these images with the {{Personality rights}}-tag, that is meant to inform re-users (outside of Wikimedia projects) of potential problems.
Therefore, I want to recommend you not to upload more of these kind of images or to digitally crop away the people in the image before uploading them. Cheers. --Túrelio (talk) 11:05, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Túrelio,

In Israel there is no problem with the persons appearing. It gives a good estimation of size (as the photo near the huge door of the church), but at your request I will refrain from uploading such photos in the future.

--Yoavd (talk) 12:52, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Yoav,
thanks for your reply. gives a good estimation of size - that is a legitimate reason, and in such cases you do not need to refrain from uploading such images.--Túrelio (talk) 13:49, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Description of photos taken at the Weizmann Institute[edit]

Hi Yoav, i was happy to find several good photos taken from the Weizmann Institute. I wanted to add them to the articles on Ness Ziona and Rehovot in the Hebrew Wiki. The problem is i cannot tell which city can be seen in the photo (is it Ness Ziona or Rehovot?) could you add amore precise description to the photos you took? here are some of them:

File:Weizmann_Institute_of_Science48.JPG File:Weizmann_Institute_of_Science49.JPG File:Weizmann_Institute_of_Science52.JPG

Thanks and regards --kippi70 (talk) 10:40, 27 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Thank you for the interest in my photos. Number 48 is a view of Rehovot , number 49 us a view of the Weizmann Institute (situated inside Rehovot) and number 52 is of the science park, situated between Ness Ziona and Rehovot so part of what you see is in Ness Ziona and the other part in Rehovot. --Yoavd (talk) 05:21, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the quick response. I think you are mixing something up (i studied at the agricultural faculty about 15 years ago, so i am not sure), please have a look again, i think that photo no.52 is a view of the houses of Rehovot and photo no.48 shows a view on the science Park, Ness Ziona and in the far background Rishon LeZion? i agree with your description of no.49. Thanks again --kippi70 (talk) 09:47, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, actually I was not sure about the issue, so I asked our guide. Please see his answer (I understand that your Hebrew us excellent) at : he:שיחת משתמש:מיכאלי and I am pretty sure that his answer is correct. --Yoavd (talk) 12:53, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You can't release this pic under a free license since it clearly a derivative of the sign which is under someone else's copyright.Geni (talk) 14:32, 9 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

I asked the Israeli expert on copyrights issues about this and I hope he will answer here. Thank you!

By the way - Israeli laws may differ than the laws in other countries....

--Yoavd (talk) 10:29, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

According to the Israeli Copyright act, 2007, article 23: "Broadcasting, or copying by way of photography, drawing, sketch or similar visual description, of an architectural work, a work of sculpture or work of applied art, are permitted where the aforesaid work is permanently situated in a public place."
a sign is "applied art" and if "situated in a public place" than the picture is allowed under the law. Deror avi (talk) 15:34, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Budapest Images[edit]

Hello Yoavd,

I have mentioned, that you loaded huge amount of Budapest into Commons. But there are two problems with them.

1) There is no description of these images. Wikipedia is first of all encyclopedia and your images can have here some value only if other poeple know what is on image, where it is and so on.

2) Some of your image are very low quality or with zero encyclopedic value. For instance the image of part of anonymous tree: File:BudapestDSCN3626.JPG, some statue without head: File:BudapestDSCN3842.JPG, File:BudapestDSCN3847.JPG and many many others. Do you really believe, that it has some sense to load thinks like this here???

With regards, --Karel (talk) 15:22, 25 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I will write explanations to the photos - I do not think that there are very low quality photos, as I checked all of them before uploading them. Anyway I plan to rewrite the article about Budapest in the Hebrew wikipedia and maybe add some material to the English one. Please wait one-two weeks and then judge again my work , as I plan to dedicated about two weeks to this. Thank you! --Yoavd (talk) 04:17, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I am looking forward to your article about Budapest. With regards, --Karel (talk) 12:53, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:Monument to the Negev Brigade23.JPG has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

/ separator[edit]

Hello. I update all your sub pages with a '/' instead of a '\'. '/' is the right separator used into URL, and MediaWiki use it too. If you use '\' the engine will not understand it is sub page. Then remember to use '/' when you will create a new sub page. Thanks. ~ bayo or talk 19:41, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. –Krinkletalk 00:00, 16 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you revert my change? Under fair use rules, if a free-use file is available it is not acceptable to use a copyrighted alternative. DrKiernan (talk) 10:51, 3 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I looked at the English site, and believed it was a mistake. I also wrote a remark, but probably you cannot read Hebrew. Anyway, in [1] it is written that the file qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law. Our Israeli expert on copyright law is User:Deror avi so maybe check it with him. Best wishes, --95.35.229.124 11:02, 3 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You can probably use it under fair use, but you need to upload it to the local wiki as commons does not host fair use images. DrKiernan (talk) 11:11, 3 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

photos about board games[edit]

Hello, I help a man that wrote his phd dissertation about board games before WWII in Israel to add photos to his article in the Hebrew wikipedia. The games were bought in the 1920-1930 and at least in Israel (according to Deror Avi) there should not be a copyright problem. If you think that the photo should be labeled differently, please change the status. Thanks! --Yoavd (talk) 13:15, 15 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If the board game designs are in the public domain, you should tag them with an appropriate PD template. According to Commons:Licensing#Israel, works first published in Israel are protected until 70 years after the author's death. The author in these cases would be the designers of the board games. If you can show that the authors have been dead for more than 70 years, you should use {{PD-old-70}}.
{{Cc-by-sa-2.5}}, which you have used, implies that the game designs are protected by copyright and has been published under that license by the game designer. You shouldn't use that tag if that's not the case.
To show that the game designs are in the public domain, you will need to provide correct source and authorship information. You currently claim that they are your own work and that you are the author (both of which would mean that you created the games). It seems that's not the case. Unfortunately, I can't make these changes for you, because I don't know where you got them from or who the actual authors are. LX (talk, contribs) 15:39, 15 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
hello again,
Of course I have no relation to the creating of the games. I will forward what you wrote to the man who wrote the work and ask him for comments. Those games were created 80-90 years ago, and I tagged them in this fathion so that he can use the photos in the articles about the games only, I hope that I did correctly. --Yoavd (talk) 12:02, 17 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! The intended use on Wikipedia does not affect whether there are copyright issues with hosting them on Wikimedia Commons. If it can't be shown that the images are in the public domain (or published under a free license, which seems less likely), then it may affect the possibility of uploading them locally to the Hebrew Wikipedia instead, provided that the Hebrew Wikipedia allows non-free content (meta:Fair use doesn't say). LX (talk, contribs) 15:22, 17 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Yoavd, you are not Saadia Mandel, right? Them why did you write "self work" in the source entry? Do you have a written permission by Saadia Mandel? If yes, did you sent it to OTRS? --Túrelio (talk) 09:05, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Saadia is a friend of mine. I wrote self work for the photos, and wrote clearly that he did the drawings. He is awell known architect in Israel. --Yoavd (talk) 09:09, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

O.k., thanks. But we do need a permission, which should be rather easy in this case. Please go to Commons:Email templates and copy the boxed "Declaration of consent for all inquiries", enter the filenames or complete URLs of all your Mandel-related uploads, enter the license of his choice and ask him to put the date and his name under it and to mail it back to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org from an email address evidently associated to him or his office.
In between you might change in the description of all these uploads
  • 1) the date entry to the date of creation of the drawing (not of the reproduction or of upload);
  • 2) the author entry from your username to "Saadia Mandel" (of course, you might add: / Yoavd (photo) );
  • 3) if a drawing has an original description/name, you should add it into the description entry;
  • 4) the source entry from "self work" to "Saadia Mandel", if you got it directly from him. If you reproduced the drawings from a book, you should enter the name of the book.
By the way: did you intentionally choose the GFDL license (which is rather unfitting for image, though still legitimate)? --Túrelio (talk) 09:28, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again, The occasion was yesterday, his 80th borthday. He decided to sell his drawings and donate the money to charity (children with cancer) - so many of his friends bought drawings, personally I bought 3 of the drawings. HE gave me the permission - of course - and I will ask him this evening to mail the "Declaration of consent for all inquiries" as you asked. I hope that all will end well...

Best wishes, Yoav Dothan--Yoavd (talk) 09:47, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, thanks for your effort. --Túrelio (talk) 09:55, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This appears to be a photo of a sign at the site of the excavations (the Davidson Centre). Do you own the copyright for the sign? If not I guess this would be a copy-vio without OTRS. Hoping you do, because it is a good and useful picture. Rich Farmbrough, 01:06 12 September 2011 (GMT).

Hello, this is a photo taken in 2009 and then some work done by KArol , probably using photoshop or some other software. I believe that after the changes done it is not violating any copyright law but I will ask our law expert to check the issue. --Yoavd (talk) 10:36, 26 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A few syntaxes[edit]

Hi Yoavd,

Thank you for your contributions. I noticed a few small mistakes in your syntax (nothing serious). Could you take a look at this edit and the edit summary and tell me if you understand what I mean? Thanks again, –Krinkletalk 16:42, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much! I upload the photos using the communist and probably I made a mistake there. I will try to understand how to fill the fields correctly.--Yoavd (talk) 05:22, 28 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Pay attention to copyright

If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with {{subst:OP}} and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

I noticed you've uploaded File:Elef Millim - Pardes MinkovDSCN5541.JPG and I thought I should draw your attention to a common error.
Please give some thought to writing a good description of uploaded images. This ensures that they can be used. It also helps those that review and improve categories do a better job, which also ensures that images will get used in novel and interesting ways. Thanks, and happy editing!

This photo was taken in a vineyard, with the explicit permission of the organizer of the tour. We were told that we can photograph anything and I asked if I could upload it on the wikipedia commons. As I have no written document and the photo was shot a long time ago, you can do what you wish, I cannot prove that I got the permission.

The Hebrew words mean: a map of the vineyards.
