Years & decades[edit]

Could you explain this edit? How can Category:1945 stamps of the United States not be a subcategory of Category:Stamps of the United States 1941-1950? - Jmabel ! talk 00:06, 26 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jmabel, Category:1945 stamps of the United States is not a good subcategory of Category:Stamps of the United States 1941-1950 unless each stamp in Category:Stamps of the United States 1941-1950 was categorized by year. Most other decade categories didn't have any yearly subcategories so I went through a few that did and removed them where there were only one or two years listed with only a few stamps inside. The only one I kept was Category:1851 stamps of the United States‎ as a subset of Category:Stamps of the United States 1850-1859 because the number of stamps make up the majority of the category.
IMO special issues, particularly large ones, make good subcategories of decade categories, and of course yearly categories are a good subset of Category:Stamps of the United States by year. I'm not against having yearlies in the decades, but each stamp would have to get categorized by year; otherwise, having only one or two years within a decade—and often being incomplete such as Category:1945 stamps of the United States—is not helpful. There are only a certain number of reasonable alternatives here.
  1. Category:1945 stamps of the United States as a subcat of Category:Stamps of the United States 1941-1950, which is what I favor. After all, we don't say we wouldn't include a category for Connecticut under a parent category for the United States just because we don't have an analogous category for Delaware.
    1. We could create analogous categories for other years and use these more specific categories to any where this can be worked out.
  2. Category:1945 stamps of the United States could be removed entirely and the stamps recategorized into Category:Stamps of the United States 1941-1950. I don't love this, but could live with this.
  3. If somehow we determine that Category:1945 stamps of the United States should be kept and but is not a subcategory of Category:Stamps of the United States 1941-1950, then all of the stamps in Category:1945 stamps of the United States also need to be in Category:Stamps of the United States 1941-1950, because otherwise anyone coming down the hierarchy by decades will never be able to find them. I think this is a bad solution, because it is more like Flickr tagging than our usual approach to categorization. Logically, Category:1945 stamps of the United States is a subcat of Category:Stamps of the United States 1941-1950: it is impossible for an image to belong in the first and not the second.
If either of my first two solutions is acceptable to you, fine. (The one about removing the category would require consensus via CFD, though). If you have suggestions other than the above, please say what they are. But if you want to leave it so that we keep Category:1945 stamps of the United States but it's not a subcategory of Category:Stamps of the United States 1941-1950, I think we need to take have this discussion more broadly, probably at the Village pump, because the two of us will not get to consensus. - Jmabel ! talk 15:12, 26 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I already put all the stamps from Category:1945 stamps of the United States into Category:Stamps of the United States 1941-1950. Category:1945 stamps of the United States should be kept and more stamps added to it. I would like to see each stamp put into a year category (most of which will need to be created), which I might get around to doing at some point. So, #2 is fine but it doesn't need to be removed because it's already a subset of Category:Stamps of the United States by year. IMO, the decade categories are fine the way they are now, and in the future every year can be added to Category:Stamps of the United States by year, so I don't favor Category:1945 stamps of the United States being a subset of Category:Stamps of the United States 1941-1950 because to me it makes more sense to just have each year under Category:Stamps of the United States by year. If you think that needs consensus, I'll be glad to participate in a wider discussion. MrFrosty2 (talk) 23:17, 26 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Eh. I don't love that solution, but I can live with it. - Jmabel ! talk 23:25, 26 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
