Good evening XRay,

Thank you for nominating my photo.
Greetings from Friesland in the Netherlands.--Famberhorst (talk) 16:25, 6 January 2019 (UTC)

:-) I hope to see Friesland within the next years. I like the german part (and your and Agnes photographs) in the east, so I should see the part in the west. --XRay talk 16:30, 6 January 2019 (UTC)

Captions in January

The previous message from today says captions will be released in November in the text. January is the correct month. My apologies for the potential confusion. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 20:43, 7 January 2019 (UTC)

Structured Data - file captions coming this week (January 2019)

My apologies if this is a duplicate message for you, it is being sent to multiple lists which you may be signed up for.

Hi all, following up on last month's announcement...

Multilingual file captions will be released this week, on either Wednesday, 9 January or Thursday, 10 January 2019. Captions are a feature to add short, translatable descriptions to files. Here's some links you might want to look follow before the release, if you haven't already:

  1. Read over the help page for using captions - I wrote the page on mediawiki.org because captions are available for any MediaWiki user, feel free to host/modify a copy of the page here on Commons.
  2. Test out using captions on Beta Commons.
  3. Leave feedback about the test on the captions test talk page, if you have anything you'd like to say prior to release.

Additionally, there will be an IRC office hour on Thursday, 10 January with the Structured Data team to talk about file captions, as well as anything else the community may be interested in. Date/time conversion, as well as a link to join, are on Meta.

Thanks for your time, I look forward to seeing those who can make it to the IRC office hour on Thursday. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 21:09, 7 January 2019 (UTC)

Invalid changes by XRayBot

Hi, XRay. I noticed that your bot has been putting the {{MetaCat}} template on some categories that are not metacats, specifically some "by name" categories. Some examples:

The "by name" categories are not always metacategories. They are metacategories only when their subcategories group multiple things that have the same name. An example of this is Category:Hotels by name, where each subcategory is for hotels that share a name. Please look more closely at "by name" categories before adding the metacat template. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 20:44, 12 January 2019 (UTC)

@Auntof6: Sorry, my misunderstanding. For me these categories are "MetaCat", but there are some unfathomable differences to other templates like "CatCat". My bot runs only one time for these categories. So it will not happen again. And the "MetaCat" wasn't set if there is already a template "CatCat" (or "By century category" or same for continent, country, language, patron saint, region, state,). Templates like "CatCat" or "MetaCat" are missing at a lot categories. The already existing inconsistencies at Commons. BTW: It's "CatCat", not "Catcat" or "catcat", and "MetaCat", not "Metacat". I try to reduce the redirects too. -- I'll skip the "by name" categories. Thanks for your hint. --XRay talk 06:41, 13 January 2019 (UTC)
BTW: The german translation of "MetaCat" and "CatCat" is nearly the same. --XRay talk 07:17, 13 January 2019 (UTC)

I found another one: Category:Buildings covered by foliage. In this case, the word by doesn't indicate a grouping as it does in metacategories. Can you at least do some preliminary screening of the categories the bot is adding the metacat tag to? --Auntof6 (talk) 06:28, 20 January 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for your advice. I checked both categories with "by foliage" and they are OK now. Thank you. I checked some categories and for me it is not clear, which one are clearly "CatCat" or clearly "MetaCat". I can recheck categories. My bot will finish today, all these categories are only categories affected to my photographs. I've a list of all visited categories, so it's easy to find or recheck categories. I can run a bot again for some of these categories if there is a mistake. The bot fixes some usual errors, but these errors should be only minor one. I'll try to check the categories immediate if "MetaCat" is added. I'll write a log file. --XRay talk 07:10, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
BTW: Do you think "by species" could be a candidate for "CatCat" too? --XRay talk 07:13, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
It depends. Can you give me a specific category to look at? The ones I can think of that sometimes would not be metacats are by name, registration, serial, serial number. The issue is that, in a metacat name, the word by is shorthand for "grouped by". Non-metacats that use the word by use it as it is used in the English language. Examples of that are "Books by Charles Dickens", "Buildings covered by foliage", etc. There isn't a way I know of for any automated process to determine which way it's being used in any given category name. --Auntof6 (talk) 07:33, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
Yes, it's a small list. These are all the categories modified within the last days:
Sorry, it's only one category. All other with my species are not modified or only minor fixed.
BTW: Only categories with "by" and words in lowercase letters with at least three letters are affected. So categories like "Books by Charles Dickens" are no problem. --XRay talk 08:05, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
My bot has finished his work. Today the bot added MetaCat to the following relavant categories:
--XRay talk 10:43, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
Yes, I think that by-species category is a metacat. You might have noticed that I removed both the metacat and catcat tags from Category:Hydronymy by saints. That category was set up strangely. It needed to be renamed, so I renamed it just now. --Auntof6 (talk) 10:56, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
@Auntof6: OK. Thank you for your help and your patience. While my bots runs for the categories I found that there are a lot of mistakes und uncomplete templates. It's wild growth ("Wildwuchs" in german). My bot fixed a lot of mistakes - and made very few mistakes. The mistakes by bot made depends on the kind of category and the kind of user who made the modifications. A guide for some templates may be useful. I can't solve the problem, but hopefully I fixed some issues. The algorithm of the bot will work für my categories furthermore, but these are only few categories. So I can check the categories if the are modified. --XRay talk 11:03, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
