Solar Cycle 25 images[edit]

Hey, I was looking at your work on 'Solar Cycle 25' on Wikipedia. It needs to be updated but I think in doing so we should have the graph be exactly at the start and end point of the solar cycle. Something more like this?[1] Thanks, --192.150.174.22 14:58, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hunga Tonga File[edit]

Hi there, I am the unnamed IP from before in your Hunga Tonga File. I managed to put a scale and Timestamps to the pictures, am I allowed to alter your image this way? If not, of course I'll delete it immediately. [2]

Ellutan (talk) 00:55, 18 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You can alter it if you want to, I don’t know if you can right now since the admins have protected the image due to it being highly used right now, I can’t even edit it myself. Cyclonetracker7586 (talk) 02:22, 18 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Oh never mind you already have. Cyclonetracker7586 (talk) 02:23, 18 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Nighttime, IR color imagery[edit]

Hi, what software do you use to colorize nighttime storm satellite images, IR imagery is very beautiful: File:Gamède 2007-02-25 1920Z.jpg, File:Isabel 2003-09-14 0238Z.jpg? I also did some color IR images, File:October 2021 Northeast Pacific bomb cyclone 2021-10-24 0603Z.jpg, File:Eunice 2022-02-17 0143Z.jpg, but the quality is a bit bad. Can you show me which software is the best to use and upload a new version for the above 2 pictures? Thank you very much.--Argene 2 (talk) 13:34, 19 April 2022 (UTC)Argene 2[reply]

@Argene 2: I use GIMP or I use paint.net I think either of them are good enough to use to colorize your images, I say use paint.net (which it cost money) if you have a slower system, but if you have a fast computer system use GIMP Cyclonetracker7586 (talk) 13:38, 19 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. rubin16 (talk) 06:56, 3 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I support your decision to delete that image it is a copyright violation, and at the time I was fairly new uploading images on Wiki commons and didn't know it was a copyright violation. Cyclonetracker7586 (talk) 14:51, 26 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! A file you uploaded, File:Malakas 2022-04-13 0600Z.jpg was brought to my attention on an off-wiki venue due to a possible copyright issue. The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology releases images under terms that are incompatible with Wikimedia Commons (non-profit use only, 「ご利用は非営利目的」). You've supplied a link to the NICT HIMAWARI-8 website as the source for the image, so I am led to believe that this image was sourced from the NICT, however your upload summary (Uploaded a work by NASA/JMA's Himawari 8 from https://worldview.earthdata.nasa.gov/ with UploadWizard) says otherwise. Where did you get this image from, and can you clarify the |source= parameter of the image summary? Thanks. Chlod (say hi!) 10:18, 18 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Oh originally I uploaded that file from EOSDIS worldview but since then I changed the source since at first that image was a composite image (I combine grayscale visible imagery with the blue marble background), that didn't seem realistic to me so I went to NICT website to get archive true color imagery of Malakas and changed the website information and copyright information. Adjustment needed[edit]

Hi. Sorry to bother you, but it appears that, according to the information in the en.wiki article "List of costliest Atlantic hurricanes", the commons.wikimedia image "10 Costliest Atlantic hurricanes.jpg" has #12 Wilma at #8, moves #8 and #9 down to #9 and #10, and excludes #10 Michael. I do not know how to make these stitched images, so I have to trouble you to go in and make the adjustment. Thank you. Jmg38 (talk) 09:49, 9 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

What product from GOES-16 is the image you uploaded? I'm assuming it isn't GeoColor, because it doesn't look like there's any IR imagery toward the top of the image. Inks.LWC (talk) 06:57, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I downloaded raw GOES-16 visible data from AWS S3 Explorer and converted from netcdf files into actual images, and then combine the 3 visible images to get a true-color image. Cyclonetracker7586 (talk) 12:53, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Night IR images[edit]

How do you make them so high quality? The ones (example) I made are going to be useless, but I just want to make some on my own. What I'm trying to ask is how do you make the Brightness Temperature (Band 31, Night) overlay high quality? If not that, then, what is it? SongdaTalas (talk) 04:04, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If you have a laptop or desktop, the first step is to go to NASA Worldview. Step 2 is to go to layers and type in "Terra 31 Band", "Aqua 31 Band", "Suomi I5" band, or "NOAA-20 I5 band" and make sure you select the bottom option since the top option is daytime IR imagery. Step 3 is to locate the hurricane/typhoon/cyclone on the map and then take a snapshot of the tropical cyclone to keep the spatial resolution at 1km at the top right of the screen since IR imagery resolution is 1km and download the image. Step 4 is to go back to layers and type in "blue marble" to get the colored background, take a snapshot of the background and take a snapshot that, and make sure you disable the other layers when doing so. Step 5 you will have to download paint.net or GIMP or Photoshop or another photo editing program, I recommend paint.net if you have a slower system and/or new at photo editing, I recommend GIMP if you have a moderately powerful system and it is a good alternative to paint.net, and I recommend Photoshop if you have money to spend and you would need a fairly powerful system for that program also. Step 6 is to make the snapshot of the tropical cyclone black and white since the raw image is purplish and pinkish color, then invert the colors so the clouds would be white, then combine the tropical cyclone snapshot and the blue marble background to get the final result. If you're contributing on a phone or tablet, unfortunately I cannot help you, but I'm guessing you're using a laptop or desktop so that it wouldn't be a problem for you I hope you understand what I'm saying, it would have been easier if I had a video tutorial or something. There are a lot of steps to this nevertheless, cheers kind sir/ma'am. If you need more satellite tutorials or coaching I am here to help you can also contact Supportstorm via their talk page also they have been doing this longer than I have.
@SongdaTalas Cyclonetracker7586 (talk) 10:47, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Also, the Bavi image you created was better than my first attempts at creating IR images, if that was your first attempt. When I started creating these images, I was not that good at ALL, lol, so all you need to do is to keep creating those images. You will improve over time. Everything in life takes time to improve. Cheers, once again :). Cyclonetracker7586 (talk) 11:10, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Did it. I used GIMP because I already had it so I could generate hypo storms. SongdaTalas (talk) 13:25, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I just realized a way to make it high quality. Export both the blue marble and band 31 imagery as resolution per pixel and as a Png. In the editing software, export the final image as a jpg/jpeg. SongdaTalas (talk) 00:05, 7 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@SongdaTalas Yes that is another way to it. Cyclonetracker7586 (talk) 11:54, 7 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Image uploading[edit]

How do you manage to get the satellite photos of tropical cyclones? TheBigBookOfNaturalScience (talk) 22:30, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@TheBigBookOfNaturalScience I get MODIS and VIIRS satellite images from NASA EOSDIS Worldview and Himawari and GOES satellite images from AWS S3 Explorer. Although these images the images I get from S3 Explorer, I download NetCDF files and convert them into images, which take some work to process and I think you need a powerful system to process also. Personally, I would go to Worldview to download and upload images quickly and simply. Hope this explanation helps :). Cyclonetracker7586 (talk) 22:36, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Cyclonetracker7586 Can you please send a link so I can access it? Thanks! TheBigBookOfNaturalScience (talk) 23:08, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
https://worldview.earthdata.nasa.gov/ For EOSDIS Worldview and https://registry.opendata.aws/collab/noaa/ for AWS S3 Explorer Cyclonetracker7586 (talk) 23:27, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@TheBigBookOfNaturalScience Forgot to ping you. Cyclonetracker7586 (talk) 23:27, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Cyclonetracker7586 Can you explain the steps, please? It's very confusing for me to navigate. TheBigBookOfNaturalScience (talk) 23:34, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@TheBigBookOfNaturalScience Sorry for not explaining it step by step
Okay for EOSDIS Worldview these are the steps
1. First you go to the website
2. Locate where the storm is located on the the map
3. Go to the top right of your screen and select the camera
4. After you select the camera adjust the area where you want to take the screenshot and select if you want it in JPG, PNG or GeoTiff format
5. Lastly download the image.
The AWS S3 explorer method is extremely challenging and tricky and your system (aka computer, laptop, or mobile device) have to be extremely powerful so I recommend just using EOSDIS Worldview for now. Cyclonetracker7586 (talk) 23:55, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the tutorial! TheBigBookOfNaturalScience (talk) 23:58, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@TheBigBookOfNaturalScience No problem and If you need help in the future, let me know, but for now I'm about to go offline for today since I'm on vacation. I'll be on tomorrow between 15:00 UTC and 21:00 UTC if you need anymore assistance. Cyclonetracker7586 (talk) 23:59, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

AWS S3 explorer[edit]

I am just curious, how tricky / powerful the system is required to produce an image from the netcdf files from aws s3 explorer? Typhoonnerd (talk) 00:58, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Typhoonnerd I think at least 8GB or 12GB of RAM doesn't matter what graphics card you have though. Cyclonetracker7586 (talk) 21:01, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
yet how exactly can we convert bz2 / nc files into sattelite imageries, since i tried different converters and resulted in errors Typhoonnerd (talk) 15:10, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Typhoonnerd You have to download a map program like QGIS (which is the more extensive route). I also would recommend using Geo2Grid if you have a Linux or a Linux virtual machine (this is the more easier route), but once again you will need to have a somewhat powerful system to generate this images on both programs, they tend to be over 20,000 pixels large since these are geostationary satellites and they are taking pictures of an entire hemisphere of the Earth. These take 15-30 minutes to generate depending on how powerful your system is, and the true-color images takes even more time to memorize and generate. My ram is 16GB and it is hard for me to generate them, I only generate them if the polar orbiting satellite images are down on EOSDIS Worldview (which they are as of the time I'm typing this message) or if I want to go back in the archives and upload an image of a storm closer to its peak. I honestly don't think 8GB or 12GB is enough like I said in my previous message, but you can try. TheWxResearcher (talk) 15:26, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@TheWxResearcher yet can we use AHI imagery from Himawari 8 (JMA) for the images of cyclones, as the imagery is not downm in there of EOSDIS worldview Typhoonnerd (talk) 00:23, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

EOSDIS time?[edit]

How do you manage to find the Zulu time for the EOSDIS images? I can't find it on the site. TheBigBookOfNaturalScience (talk) 19:42, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@TheBigBookOfNaturalScience Look up orbit in track time in the "add layers" section. It should give you the orbit time for each of the satellites. TheWxResearcher (talk) 21:58, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
 Thanks, @TheWxResearcher! TheBigBookOfNaturalScience (talk) 22:05, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@TheBigBookOfNaturalScience No Problem. TheWxResearcher (talk) 22:05, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nighttime infrared image final step[edit]

I was reading this question so I can created Nighttime IR images, but how do you upload the cyclone image onto the blue marble image? TheBigBookOfNaturalScience (talk) 01:48, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, it's specifically for GIMP. TheBigBookOfNaturalScience (talk) 02:52, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@TheBigBookOfNaturalScience Sorry for the late response, but you first look up "Terra or Aqua Band 31" or "NOAA-20 or Suomi-NPP I5 Band," which should give your results for the IR images. Then you take snapshots and download of the storm you're interested in. Then after that, look up "2004 Blue Marble," then take a snapshot of that and download it (the snapshot should already be centered over where the storm is located if you don't touch or move anything). When you load up GIMP you first open the blue marble image then you open the IR image as an layer and superimpose it on top the blue marble image, and I would also like to mention that you make sure to make turn the IR image into a black and white image so it could be realistic, because the original image is pink and purple. That should be the end of it. TheWxResearcher (talk) 08:25, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@TheWxResearcher There's so many options when I superimpose it. Which ones do I select? TheBigBookOfNaturalScience (talk) 08:31, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@TheBigBookOfNaturalScience Use the screen option. TheWxResearcher (talk) 12:32, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@TheWxResearcher I selected the screen option then superimposed it, but it did nothing. Is there something else I have to do, and sorry for making this complicated. TheBigBookOfNaturalScience (talk) 15:51, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@TheBigBookOfNaturalScience Did you go to upper left of your screen and hover over file and select "open as layers" (for an example first you open up the "blue marble image, then you go to "open as layers," then select the IR image then you select the "screen option"). I hope this explanation helps, but yes you have to do that. Sorry, I didn't say that in my last message. TheWxResearcher (talk) 16:34, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@TheWxResearcher Does the IR image have to be transparent for it to work? TheBigBookOfNaturalScience (talk) 17:13, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
They can if you prefer them to be transparent I have been plenty of users creating transparent IR images and their images have been used for peak images. But me personally I prefer them to not be transparent to add a bit more realism to the image but that is a extra few steps you have to do. TheWxResearcher (talk) 17:27, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@TheBigBookOfNaturalScience Sorry I forgot to ping you. TheWxResearcher (talk) 17:27, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@TheWxResearcher I did the thing, then tried to screen it, but the Blue Marble doesn't show. It's all gray. How do I make it show. TheBigBookOfNaturalScience (talk) 17:59, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@TheBigBookOfNaturalScience Hmmm that is weird, try to open the IR image first then open the blue marble image and see what happens. TheWxResearcher (talk) 21:09, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@TheWxResearcher I finally found the problem after days@ Apparently, I had to use color to alpha so that the black shade would be transparent! Here's the photo I used and another one after some minor tweaks. Thanks for the help! TheBigBookOfNaturalScience (talk) 05:49, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@TheBigBookOfNaturalScience Sorry for the late response but no problem. TheWxResearcher (talk) 20:52, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

NOAA Class data[edit]

How do I download the data from NOAA Class? I'm assuming you know what to do since I saw a few files from NOAA Class. FooBarBaz (talk) 18:21, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@FooBarBaz Sorry for the late response but yes some files I got from NOAA Class, typically it is from older generation GOES satellites since those are the easiest files to download. I'll give the step first you go to NOAA Class then you create an account on the website that is the second step. When you are registered on the website the third step is to go to "please select a product" near the top the page. the fourth step is to select whichever satellite you want to pick I recommend downloading older generation GOES data if you want to get images of for an example Hurricane Katrina or Hurricane Ivan or even older storms like Andrew. But I'm not experience enough to download any other type of data on that other than that data. TheWxResearcher (talk) 11:17, 29 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@TheWxResearcher Thanks! FooBarBaz (talk) 11:31, 29 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@FooBarBaz No problem, and if you need additional help, I'll chime in. TheWxResearcher (talk) 11:35, 29 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Major 2023 storms[edit]

Update Dora's image. FooBarBaz (talk) 14:01, 4 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@TheWxResearcher You there? FooBarBaz (talk) 17:45, 4 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@FooBarBaz I will update it in a minute sorry I was at work today. TheWxResearcher (talk) 22:42, 4 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@TheWxResearcher No worries! Just wanted to see if you were online. FooBarBaz (talk) 22:43, 4 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Suomi Black Marble images[edit]

How do you make Suomi Black Marble images on EOSDIS Worldview? FooBarBaz (talk) 14:42, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@FooBarBaz The same way you make Colored IR images the only two differences are that you have to look up "suomi nighttime imagery," and also it only works certain times of the month usually around the full moon. Also off-topic thing I just noticed that you are TheBigBookofNaturalScience lol. TheWxResearcher (talk) 18:22, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

AWS Tutorial[edit]

Are you able to send a tutorial to download AWS true color imagery? FooBarBaz (talk) 00:46, 18 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@FooBarBaz I'll give you the basics tomorrow but I'm about go offline for today check back in around 17:00 UTC (1:00 PM EDT) tomorrow. TheWxResearcher (talk) 01:05, 18 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@FooBarBaz Alrighty I woke up early today.....
So first I recommend you get a Linux or Linux virtual machine if you want to easily download and process these images. There is this program where you can download where you can process these images easily called Geo2Grid and this is the link https://www.ssec.wisc.edu/software/geo2grid/installation.html but again you need a Linux or a Linux virtual machine. The way I am doing it is extremely complicated and takes a lot of memory space out of my computer since when I do it I am processing a whole hemisphere of the Earth and those images are over 20,000 pixels wide and keep in mind I have to open up 3 of those images because making a true color image requires 3 channels from the GOES satellites. But once again I heard that Geo2Grid program would make it a whole lot easier unfortunately I don't know work that program since I don't have a Linux. TheWxResearcher (talk) 11:37, 18 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Is there more to this or you're finished? FooBarBaz (talk) 14:11, 18 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@FooBarBaz Unfortunately yes all I got to say try to get Geo2Grid to work and you could produce those types of images I'm assuming you do not have a Linux system and/or Linux virtual machine. TheWxResearcher (talk) 14:51, 18 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect. I was just about to go to school, so I'll ask you some questions after school since it is very hard to edit there. FooBarBaz (talk) 14:56, 18 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@FooBarBaz Okay I'll be around if you need me. TheWxResearcher (talk) 14:57, 18 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You've made a redirect wheel... One redirect to another... and it never ends. Decide, which one should be a normal category, please. Wieralee (talk) 23:24, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Wieralee I was trying to fix it because someone created the Hurricane Margot category a few days ago when Margot was still a tropical storm and I moved it to Tropical Storm Margot. Then, when Margot became a hurricane, I tried to move it back to Hurricane Margot but it started to confuse me trying to redirect the old category next time I'll let a more experienced editor fix it. Maria[edit]

  1. You're correct in that I was a little too flippant with my rename reason. Sorry about that.
  2. In accordance with the principle of least astonishment, a filename should be informative and unambiguous. The name "Maria" can refer to many, many, many, many, many different things. Why was this not a photograph of the town of Maria, in the Filipino province of Siquijor? Why was this not a photograph of Maria Naganawa, Maria Kekkonen, Maria Holly, or Maria Fyfe? Why was this not a photograph of the asteroid 170 Maria? Why was it not a photograph of the Maria reactor?
  3. All that aside, I should have realized that the file was part of a series of photos which were all inadequately named, such that renaming them all is probably more hassle than it's worth. So I've put it back.

Image of Hurricane Otis[edit]

Hello, I have seen that you have used some sort of image editing software to edit the image of Hurricane Otis. How did you edit it and what software did you use? I'm trying to upload a similarly-styled image for Subtropical Storm 11F. Thank you! 2003 LN6 04:57, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@2003 LN6 I used GIMP to create that image you could also use Paint.net if you have a PC that run a bit on the slower end but you might not get the same results. TheWxResearcher (talk) 15:31, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have downloaded GIMP and have inserted the image into the editing software. Could you please tell me exactly how you processed your image and teach me to use it? Thank you! 2003 LN6 16:28, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@2003 LN6 Sorry man, I will try to explain it on the weekend when I have time to have a lot of school work and a job to take care of at the same time, but if you want to get an explanation quicker, I recommend going to Supportstorm's page. I have no clue if they're still active here, but if they are, they can give you an explanation quicker if they are not busy as well, but at the earliest I can you an explanation is the weekend. TheWxResearcher (talk) 00:43, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good, thank you! 2003 LN6 00:45, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
