If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. That is no reason of course not to provide them. I have personally been quite active lately with digging trough the NASA PD pictures, and cleaning up where I can. Adding sources, IDs and categories and tagging with "no source" where i really am unable to find a source. Images without a proper source and author (despite being NASA PD) should just not have been uploaded here in the first place. Everyone just doing their part. I did not present a reason for anything. It is interesting to me that you would think that I was giving a reason for not giving the source.

I have been going through images and quite often, I had to look around for what the images purpose was. Occasionally, it meant going to another wiki that was written in a language that I don't know. A couple of times I had to look elsewhere (non-wiki sites) to find out what the image was about. Quick delete Gadget[edit]

It is defined in Mediawiki:Common.js wich is no longer loaded first. The new Gadgets method changed all of that. Specially bugzilla:10184 and [1].

I'm fine with adding if ((typeof QuickDeleteLoadCount == 'undefined') ) but it doesn't work on all browsers (IE is specially dumbest). However maybe those will accept the var undeclared...

Upload form redesign[edit]

Could you spare 15 minutes to half an hour and beta-test the redesigned upload forms using Safari on Mac again? (You're using a Mac, right?) There have been so many changes that I'm not absolutely sure anymore they'll still work on browsers other than IE6 and Firefox.

There are three forms to test:

Original design with extra fields, but one single description field.
Alternate design proposed by Pfctdayelise with extra fields and one description field per language (more can be added by clicking the "+"-buttton).
Basic form for experienced users: no additional fields, just input validation.

Documentation is at MediaWiki:UploadForm.js/Documentation. A mock-up of how Commons:Upload could look if this were enabled globally is at User:Lupo/upload (using the alternate design).

Would be great if you could help out with that; I don't have access to Safari myself. Oh, and which one do you think is better: the original design with one single description, or the alternate design with the description-per-language fields? Thanks, Lupo 15:15, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Complaint[edit]

You should not move images from Wikipedia to the Commons when the result is that the image gets deleted from the Wikipedia article. This is what happened when you moved Image:Yarlung Tsangpo river tibet.jpg from Wikipedia to the Commons. After you moved it, the image was then deleted from the article, Yarlung Tsangpo River (Tibet), at Wikipedia by a bot that deletes mention of deleted images from articles. Fortunately I noticed this. I searched for the image on the Commons in order to reinsert it into the article but the search came up empty. Fortunately again, someone on Wikipedia was able to find the article at put it back into the article.

I wonder how many times this has happened and no one has noticed the image deletion in the article and the image is lost forever to the article. Mattisse (talk) 16:11, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bot generated garbage[edit]

Hi. Re edit [2]: False information should not be in image description pages. If it is wrong, it needs to be corrected or removed. I don't see any reason for an exception if the garbage was generated by some bot. I certainly don't think junk misinformation that has been corrected should be reinserted in the name of some type of "standardization"! If you have an alternative argument, I welcome hearing it. A popular bot used for transfering images here from elsewhere on Wikimedia has default setting for describing images original to the person who uploaded them to Wikipedia. When it is used for images that originated elsewhere, if the person doesn't bother to correct the information during the transfer process, the bot can generate misinformation absurdities and garbage. Bots are useful, but by their nature dumb, so it helps to keep an eye out when using them. See this edit for how the bot originally uploaded it. If you think what the bot says should be sacred and all misinformation must be preserved, I suggest you should revert to that version, which has false source, false date, false authorship -- all exactly as the bot stated them. Categories with IMO Numbers[edit]

You added a category as Category:Space Shuttle External Tank to the IMO category. I assumed it was not so usefull to see IMO numbers used otherwise than tools to find ships by IMO number. I have undone this revision (Removed category "European astronauts"; Quick-adding category "Astronauts from France"). I don't know where you got this information, but it is wrong since Claude Nicollier is Swiss. Maybe HotCat.js is too efficient a tool, allowing one to modify many articles very quickly — but I think care should be taken in order to avoid introducing wrong information in image information. Hi, I get why you would remove Category:Space Shuttle Discovery, because it's already included through Category:STS-119; but as it is a picture of the actual shuttle (not just related to the shuttle) I think it's one of these cases where it's appropriate to have both (and if one category should be removed, I would rather remove Category:STS-119 instead). Yeah but have a look at Category:Space Shuttle Discovery, 45 files only, most of them categorized both under the mission number and the shuttle name. And except for a few of them, the shuttle is not recognizable either. Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Why did you categorize Image:Mg-MSFC-6415627.jpg under Category:Mercury-Atlas mission?[edit]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Email clutter[edit]

Your threats are not particularly civil either. And trying to hide your personal behavior behind the "community" is rather cowardly. There seem to be people here that presume to have the right to do all sorts of things that they have no business doing. No my talk page is not for this kind of (your) behavior. I have done nothing wrong. I seriously try to put categories on my contributions and get punished for my good behavior by offensive and incorrect messages of my talk page and in my email box. And then you also want to muzzle and intimidate me. If anyone needs to "shunned" it is you.

Irresponsible behavior, deleting files without proper protocol[edit]

I would like to understand the reasoning behind the deletion of the following files without any proper discussion prior to the fact (I cannot find anywhere in Wikimedia any reference to these file names):

All files have had been in use with the exception of the last, which has been discussed on whether or not it should be deleted, and decided to keep. Obviously you've done no research prior to your irresponsible, vandalistic act today. Even if these files are undeleted, all previous connections they've had in the different Wikipedia projects (more than 30, mind you) have been lost.

Moreover, since I'm not very knowledgeable in the proper procedures here in Wikimedia, I would like to ask your assistance - as an Admin - to guide me how to report your behavior in the proper procedure.

You know that the image is only 1,535 × 840 pixels, right? That can't even be considered high resolution or feature picture worthy. I'm sure that the "best image" would at least be high resolution. :)

By the way, see [7] "Images (save animations, videos, and SVGs) of lower resolution than 2 million pixels are typically rejected unless there are 'strong mitigating reasons'. Note that a 1600 x 1200 image has 1.92 Mpx, just less than the 2 million level.". The image is only 1.3 million pixels. The mitigating circumstances are historical in nature and non reproducible subjects.

killEvt()[edit]

Just occurred to me: did you check what happens if a link has more than one click handler (added through addClickHandler)? Unless I'm mistaken, I've always used this on links my scripts generated themselves and where I thus could simple set node.onclick = ... What's the meaning of having several onclick handlers? Is there some order? (Quirksmode says the order is undefined.) If one handler kills the event, are the remaining ones still executed? Should they?

In particular I wonder how that might work on IE, where the return false indicates "suppress the default action". Actually, Microsoft tells not to return false (though that evidently also works) but to set evt.returnValue = false. See also [8] for a slightly different implementation of killEvt.

According to John Resig (of jQuery fame), "return false" both prevents the default actions and event bubbling. In my experience, that is true only on IE. (In fact, i never checked whether it inhibited bubbling, but it certainly kills the default action.)

Neither Microsoft nor Mozilla tell what happens if there are several onclick handlers. At least Mozilla mentions the possiblity of adding more than one through addEventListener.

Anyway, all of these are edge cases. As long as there's only one onclick handler, either setting the onclick property or using attachEvent (IE) or addEventListener (W3C) and using this killEvt will work.

In the case of multiple handlers at the same level, you have stopImmediatePropagation, which should block all onclicks at that level, opposed to normal behavior, that only stops the one onclick event from propagation. Rtl.js[edit]

Hi,

I saw that you made some changes to MediaWiki:Rtl.js. I don't know whether your changes are related to this, but i see now that when an account has Hebrew set as the language in the preferences, the Vector interface is badly broken: the tabs on the right (near the logo - user page, talk) hide the page title and the tabs near the search box (edit, history) are all the way down in the page.

I tried it with a freshly opened account and it happens there, too.

The foundation wiki apparently does not have a thumbnail sharpening activated. Commons and Wikipedia (at least de.wikip) have thumbnail sharpening activated. BP / British Petroleum / Bruno Pagès[edit]

OK, perhaps this will resonate more. Lots of muslims wish of us to remove depictions/representations of Muhammed, because they honestly don't like that they are used in Wikipedia. At times these depictions are upon ancient vases exhibited in museums. We don't remove such images simply because someone wishes they are not there. There wouldn't be an image left in the Encyclopedia if we started deleting images because people wish so.

No Bouml is not a calamity. It is a reasonable notable program within it's industry. Apparently you wrote an article on english wikipedia and it got deleted. That happens. It happens every day. It is nothing personal. It does not reflect on you or your project (at most on your skills as an independent writer). Anyone can write a new BOUML article in the English Wikipedia at any time, adding proper sources, toning down the promotional talk of the first article and stating why the program is so relevant within its industry (again sourced of course) should result in an article that would most likely be allowed for inclusion. we do not delete material simply by wish, a group of persons following this rule without any possible exception establishes a dictatorship, and the only possible behavior for the rest of people is to accept or to do the war. This is not my understanding of the standard human relationships.
Supposing you are married and your wife took a day to prepare a new dish, you drop and there are not enough / too much salt, so you put in the trash immediately. Do you really imagine she'll think it is nothing personal ? I discovered Wiki process when I written my article on Wikipedia English, so I have taken time to understand how to do to have the text and images like I expected, and few days after the article disappeared without any discussion. Navigating on Wikipedia finally I found a way to ask for the admin who removed it to know why, and he answered he didn't remember why. I insist and he said he remember and this was because the article is autobiographic. I protest saying this have no sense because the article speak about Bouml rather than me, so he said this was because there is no link to the article. Following this kind of rule it is not possible to write any article because a new subject can't be referenced. Worst this reason was still absurd because I written the article because I saw Bouml referenced in a list of tools, and clicking on Bouml link a page proposed me to write an article on it. So again I protest and the answer was being the author of the too I can't write an article on it, and other admins confirmed that the article had to be removed ! Do you really imagine I think it is nothing personal. A little time after I saw (thanks Google) a German also write an article on Bouml and this article was also removed few days after because not understandable reason, are you really surprised if because of that I decided to modify the license for Wikipedia nebula ?
I understand when placing something in xxx we have to follow the rules of xxx, but this doesn't allow xxx to do anything and process like if we are robots rather than human. Worst, on the opposite it seems admins don't have to follow any rule, and Esby or Bapti can freely say any nonsense about me.

no chance to solve problems ?[edit]

Hi, the fact my request to delete the logo of Bouml in fr.wikimedia was accepted given me some hope. A user of Bouml will create a representative picture of Bouml to place it under Commons and to use it in place of "Bouml titre.jpg" on wikimedia pages. Referring to your sentence when it is no longer used, a case might be made for removing it from Commons, as being outside the scope of the Commons project on my tack page, the goal is to not have this image used anymore to allow me to ask you to delete it and I hope to see this image deleted because it doesn't have any interest by itself. If that happens everyone wins, for me there is no more violation of license and I will be able to continue to work on Bouml, Bouml users of Bouml will appreciate that and of course to replace an image without any interest by a representative image will improve wikipedia & commons. Currently the articles on wikipedia are continuously modified by people (probably Bouml users) to try to remove the reference to the image, please note I never ask for that, I just asked for help in deletion requests, and as you can see in http://fr.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=BOUML&diff=57033938&oldid=57033229 I canceled the last change adding a remark to help them to understand. Hi, finally Arkanosis gently created an image faster than the user of Bouml I speak previously, and this screenshot is used on all three articles about Bouml. Removal is not a goal in itself. There needs to be consensus and agreement on removing that image. You can't just remove it yourself and expect to be done with it. The image is still in use, reopening a deletion discussion on Commons about a free file that is in use will be pointless at this time. Having said that, i think that Bapti is being a bit 'hyper sensitive' about this issue now. I don't see how his administrative actions benefit the French wikipedia at this moment. I don't understand it either. He clearly doesn't like wiki(p|m)edia and is now punishing his users over that. Doesn't really seem to make sense, but if that is what he wants, it is his choice. OK, the NRAO, is a project managed by AUI and financed by grants of the NSF. Unlike NASA (which employs people in it's own laboratories), the NSF only "donates" money to organizations. As such the works are not produced by a US government employee. The NRAO images are copyrighted and usage is licensed with this image policy. Hi TheDJ, I saw you executed the deletion of the above file. I don't know, whether you were involved in the deletion discussion. The link to the deletion discussion is not valid any more so I can not check the argumentation.

I would like to point out that there is at least one official source stating that a reproduction of the common side of Euro coins on Wikimedia is perfectly legal:

Reproduction of the national sides of the euro coins is governed by the legislation of the issuing countries, since these are the holders of the copyright in the design of the national sides.

Therefore I would suggest to undelete the named file and all the other common side euro coin images that may have been deleted.

Sorry to bother you. We have previously made a batch upload request (here), which Multichill (talk · contribs) accepted. But the upload was never completed (he was not responsible for most of the 507 images that have been uploaded), and now we cannot even get Multichill to answer. I have made a new request here, and noone has reacted. Maybe I made a mistake in my request, but that does not matter any longer.

For us in Wikimedia Sverige, this is an important cooperation: Nordiska museet is very influential in the GLAM sector in several countries around Sweden, and right now they are beginning to become skeptical towards Wikipedia as a cooperation partner. With a successful cooperation here, we may see many more images - they have millions in their archives, and they are, as I wrote, influential.

That's why I wonder whether you would consider making this batch upload for us. If you cannot, please let me know as soon as possible, so we may proceed with another user.

Hi DJ, I saw this edit which allowed inserting arbitrary code into the DOM (e.g. through onclick, onmouseover attributes). Please double check whether it is necessary to escape before inserting "HTML" into the DOM. Just consider a file name like File:" onmouseover="alert('There is a security vulnerable. Please contact the next admin.')" target=".png where wgTitle exactly returns " onmouseover="alert('There is a security vulnerable. Please contact the next admin.')" target=".png. User:Ruslik0 Pffft, that is just ridiculous. Just one more proof of how totally bonkers broken Commons has become. Following in the footsteps of en.wp

"The NASA employee who explains THEIR attribution policy probably knows less about copyright than I do, so we are gonna be holier than the pope and request them to send a signed contract instead of an email, so we can battle them in court if we need to" come on. It's NASA's interpretation, that they are applying to their material. If there are multiple owners it is their responsibility to put multiple attributions statements.

The Chandra institute is managed by MSFC, and as far as I know wholly funded by NASA under contract NAS8-03060. "Under the FAR general data rights clause (FAR 52.227-14), the government has unlimited rights in all data first produced in performance of or delivered under a contract, unless the contractor asserts a claim to copyright or the contract provides otherwise." Even IF Chandra claims copyright, that still gives the government unlimited rights, and that includes everything in that website, which is developed and operated under the same contract. Sure they can make mistakes somewhere, but this doesn't look like one of them to me and to presume it is as dumb as putting no trust in the usage of the Creative commons license while most people have no clue what that does either. But do not ask the bot's operators (chronically overwrought) unless you suspect an error of mine. Diacritics in wdcat.js[edit]

Hi DJ! I've been finding the wdcat.js code very useful, that you knocked together at the hackathon. But one issue that I've found is that is doesn't find the wikidata link if category names include diacritics -- accents, umlauts, slashed o, etc. For example Category:Andreas Möller.

I think the problem is that WDQ expects such characters to be "Python encoded" -- see discussion here -- eg \u00f6 for the o-umlaut character ö; whereas I suspect javascript is passing it percent encoded as %C3%B6.

Is this something that would be easy to fix in the gadget? Or is it something that would be better fixed by Magnus at the server end? Jheald (talk) 09:34, 14 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

An update on the File metadata cleanup drive[edit]

Hello D-J,

I wanted to thank you for offering to help with the File metadata cleanup drive on Commons. We now have numbers to measure the amount of files missing machine-readable information on Commons. Most of the files here have a license template, but there still about 500,000 remaining files (out of 24 million) missing an {{Information}} template, and that's where your help would be invaluable.

We're currently trying to find groups of files whose description pages are alike, so that we can use bots to automatically take that information and put it into an information template. If you still want to help, it would be great if you could look at the list of files and see if you can find such groups. You can also use the no_information tool to limit the results by uploader, or the first characters of the file name; this can help identify batch uploads.

Once you find groups of files with information in the same order or format, you can add a section to the bot requests page, so that a bot can go through them and fix them all automatically (or you can do it yourself if you have a bot, or with VisualFileChange).

In 10 days, we've already managed to add information templates to over 10% of the 500,000 remaining files. I'm hoping you can help us keep this momentum and get through the rest so we can get rid of this backlog once and for all :)
