Please have a look at File:Lottei.JPG

Hi Takeaway. I came across your ability to interpret things Thai at File talk:Namchim Pesat.JPG. Would you please have a look at File:Lottei.JPG? The "Lot" in the filename probable means "Rot" (รถ). But what might this "tei" mean? Do you have any idea? --hdamm (talk) 10:56, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

I don't speak very much Thai myself or write any Thai at all but a Thai friend of mine says that that style of tractor in Isan is called a "Rot Tan" รถแต๋น (polite version) but it can also be called a "Rot E-tan" รถอีแต๋น (less polite version). "Tan" is to be pronounced the way you'd say "tanned skin". Cheers! Takeaway (talk) 17:14, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks Takeaway, I'll build it into the description. --hdamm (talk) 07:35, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

FPC

Hello, I put up LK_loy_krathong_yi_peng_san_sai.jpg as a featured picture candidate, but while there's support for the image itself, there is opposition due to the low quality sampling. If you're interested in it being a featured picture perhaps you would like to upload a higher resolution image and link it to the fpc page or get back to me on my talk page. Thanks -LambaJan (talk) 14:52, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

Dutch food in Thailand?

Hi Takeaway, I just saw your pictures of appeltaart and broodje kroket, taken in Thailand. Remarkable! MartinD (talk) 13:04, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

  • It's not really unexpected. I recently heard that the Dutch community in Chiang Mai is the 3rd largest non-Thai community in the city. Some of the best European food I have eaten (and I have eaten a lot of good European food), I have had in Thailand, such as pizza, Spanish cuisine and Bavarian Schweinshaxe. Thailand is not only one of the world's favourite tourist destinations, it is also one of the world's favourite countries to settle in. Takeaway (talk) 20:59, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

First time in Thailand

Takeaway, thanks for the correction. It's obviously made of cellophane noodles. It was my first time in Thailand. I don't understand Thai, I could not read the menu, and people at the foodcourt I met did not speak English. I wonder whether you can help me. Do you know the name of the dish? Sakurai Midori (talk) 08:48, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

The name of this dish is "pad woon sen kung". Read more on File talk:Thai rice noodle.JPG. Cheers! Takeaway (talk) 11:18, 24 July 2009 (UTC)
Hello Takeaway, it might be the one that you think it is, "noodles dishes served in a curry soup". I will start learning about Thailand cuisine today. Sakurai Midori (talk) 23:18, 9 August 2009 (UTC) (copied this reply to File talk:Laksa Thailand.JPG. Takeaway (talk) 23:28, 9 August 2009 (UTC))

Locations of caves and temples

Dear Takeaway,

I have added the precisions you asked about the locations of Phu Wai & Hup Patad caves and Mae Sot & Kok Phra temples. Don't hesitate to ask for additional info about it.

NB: I am not 100% sure that Kok Phra is correctly spelled.

Best regards, --Réginald (To reply) 08:26, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

PS: I have looked on the map of Thailand the correct spelling is Krok Phra (โกรกพระ), located in Amphoe Nakhon Sawan near Amphoe Uthai Thani. ---Réginald (To reply) 10:32, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

Krok Phra temple

I have re-caractegorised the pictures to Category:Krok Phra temple and asked for the speedy deletion of mispelled category Category:Kok Phra temple. It would be nice if you could rename the 10 pictures (File:Kok Phra.JPG to File:Kok Phra09.JPG) to File:Krok Phra.JPG etc. Thanks, --Réginald (To reply) 11:09, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

Temples in Thailand

Dear Takeaway,

I apologise for the inconvenience I have brought about.

What about the other categories, e.g., that of Uthai Thani (main city and province)? It's a problem that many provinces have the same name as their main city. Should there additional categories be created to make the difference between the provinces and their main city? Please let me know.

Best regards, --Réginald (To reply) 13:14, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

PS: I am a botanist, not a specialist of Thailand. It's the first time I am creating categories for other purposes than plants. Sorry again for the inconvenience!

  • It is indeed confusing that all Thai provinces are named after their administrative city. As for the other provinces, apart from Chiang Mai, the number of temples per province do not seem to require having them categorised separately yet. For instance: Category:Buddhist temples in Lampang Province at the moment only contains 2 temples, one inside and one outside the city. If images of other temples in Lampang province and city are entered in to that category, it would be wise to (then) create a subcategory for Lampang town itself. In other words, I think we can postpone creating all these subcategories for the time being. PS - I like the photo of the cyclamen on your page. They are one of my favourite plants, both in the garden and in the wild. :) - Takeaway (talk) 13:34, 5 December 2009 (UTC)
FYI: I have five Cyclamen species in my garden. Two of them became naturalised: C. hederifolium and C. coum. Both are now in leave and because of the current warm weather (as last year) the first is still flowering and the second has already its first flowers. My favourite species are two somewhat less hardy ones: C. cilicium (with gracefuller flowers than C. hederifolium) and C. pseudibericum (with larger, gracefuller flowers than C. coum). The fifth (C. purpurascens) does not thrive very well in the lowland. --Réginald (To reply) 12:06, 6 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for the wonderful photos of Chan Kusalo cremation (not to mention all the other photos that you uploaded to Commons). Thank you also for you categorizing work here in the Thailand section of Commons. --hdamm (talk) 13:43, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

Russian embassy

Hi Takeaway, I have just seen the Rama 4 photos you uploaded...doesn't look like a great time to be in Bangkok at the moment.

I was wondering if you might be able to provide any assistance in getting photos of the Russian embassy in Bangkok. The details are listed at en:User:Russavia/Required_photos#.C2.A0Thailand. Or any other Russian embassies/consulates you may encounter on your travels.

Any assistance with that would be greatly appreciated. Cheers --russavia (talk) 07:21, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

I am sorry but I can not help you as I left Bangkok yesterday for Chiang Mai just before the government declared the area where I was staying as a free-fire zone. - Takeaway (talk) 07:24, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
No problem mate, you take care of yourself. Probably best that you high-tailed it out of BBK when you did then eh. Let's hope some sanity comes back to the areas in the coming time. Cheers, --russavia (talk) 07:30, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
Thanks! Seeing that I am not a professional photojournalist making money out of all this, nor owning a bullet-proof jacket and helmet like many of them, I left. I really do hope that all parties involved will come to their senses and very soon start doing something to take away the true cause of this conflict so that this can never happen again. I very much appreciate the people who live in Soi Ngam Duphli for trying to protect me, sometimes even standing between me and the area where they expected danger to come from. I am deeply grateful for their kindness. - Takeaway (talk) 07:43, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

About File:Illzach Bord du Canal.jpg

I'm sorry but the house depicted on the file is a chinese restaurant in Illzach. We can clearly see the logo on the house on the left. I know it's not the main subject depicted, but in my humble opinion even little subjects on pictures can be categorized (for example File:Carrefour entre la route vers le tunnel et le col du Somport vue 1.jpg is categorized in "Road signs in Franc"e even if the Road sign is not the main subject. Jeriby (talk) 19:17, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

It's ok I've created a new category "Chinese style restaurants in France" to fix it. Thank you :-) Jeriby (talk) 19:21, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
I did see the sign (well, barely to be honest) and it was so insignificant as the photo seemed to highlight the surroundings more than anything else, that I deleted the category "Chinese restaurant". But I'm fine with your present decision. :) - Takeaway (talk) 23:19, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks a lot :-) and it's a good occasion for creating the category "in france", I'll try to add other pictures with more visible chinese restaurants of france. Cheers! Jeriby (talk) 22:59, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Sorry

I will be more specific on image categories next time. Thanks for your help! Gabi Hernandez (talk) 16:59, 27 November 2010 (UTC)

Low quality ?

See http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Pont_Boieldieu_-_Rouen.jpg&diff=prev&oldid=45640098 ... Why "low quality" ? ... "rotate" perhaps ! There are so many other very very "bad quality" photos ! You didn't explain why you put this template ! Marc ROUSSEL - --Markus3 (talk) 03:00, 13 January 2011 (UTC)

The image is blurry due to camera shake, the lens is not focused, the high ISO grain is very noticeable. And the horizon is indeed not horizontal. The last item is easily corrected, the first three problems are not correctable. - Takeaway (talk) 14:38, 13 January 2011 (UTC)

Manimekhala

Dear Takeway, thanks for uploading your pics on en:Khon and adding them to the article. I was wondering, you wouldn't happen to have any pictures of Manimekhala (มณีเมขลา) would you? She sometimes occur in temple paintings rescuing a man from a sunken ship. And also with her crystal ball being chased by Ramasoon. See en:Manimekhala. --CommonsDara (talk) 20:08, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

I'm sorry but I don't have any pictures of Manimekhala. I'll try to keep an eye out for temple paintings depicting the goddess. - Takeaway (talk) 21:29, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

Baci?

Hi. I just stumbled upon Category:Baci. Do you have any idea, what that means? Maybe Bai Sri (Bai Si)? There's also a photo in that category with the name "Fei phook Ann". What could that mean? I would like to use the Royal Thai General System of Transcription for Thai terms, or - still better - Thai script. Thanks for your time. --hdamm (talk) 09:08, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi there, I don't know either what "Baci" is but I can ask some of my Thai friends if they know. It seems to relate to the animist traditions of Thailand and Laos. I don't know when I can give you an answer because I'm now in Munich and I won't be back in Thailand until August.
For RTGS I use http://www.thai-language.com/dict. The "Bulk Lookup" box works the best, and if that doesn't work, I use the "Generate Phonemic Transcription for Thai Text" box set to RTGS, although for some words it doesn't work very well due to exceptions in the Thai language (for instance กะเพรา). - Takeaway (talk) 12:57, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

Strainubot

Hi Takeaway. You left a message at User talk:Strainubot. Strainubot is a robot; if you have any questions, observations regarding his work, please leave them on my userpage. You have a better chance of them being noticed.

About your message: I use the same cat-finding page that File_Upload_Bot_(Magnus_Manske) is using. This works more or less like this: it takes the tags from the flickr image, then compares them with existing commons categories, keeping only the existing categories. So this is all dependent on what the flickr uploaders put as tags. There is an option to "nuke" categories, but I'd rather not use it, as an uncategorized image is much less useful than an image in a generic category.

I did edit some of the images by hand (including Category:Canon) and I will continue to do so as time permits. In the mean time, if you wish to move images between categories, feel free to do so. Thank you.--Strainu (talk) 08:10, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

I now do not wonder anymore why the way the bot categorises things seems so much like flickr. Unfortunately, as I mentioned before, it does not work at all on wikimedia. To prevent the bot from flooding main categories needlessly, I think it would be a better idea to indeed "nuke" them and then add the most important categoy manually. Now you just put all the work on sorting out the categorisation and wading though countkess useless categories to other users. - Takeaway (talk) 08:45, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

categorization

Hi Takeaway, you had recategorized some of my photographs (File:Die_schnelle_Mahlzeit_01.jpg, File:Die_schnelle_Mahlzeit_02.jpg, File:Uberbackener Lauch mit Rosinen.jpg, File:Gemüse01.jpg) from cat vegetarian food (in which I put them intentionally) to vegetarian food of Germany. I am not sure that those dishes are original German food. Even if the cook is from Germany, the dish could still be typical for some other country. What do you think? --Schwäbin (talk) 07:36, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

I would like to feature one of your photos and ask you a few questions

Hi Takeaway, my name is Frank and I'm a user on Wikimedia Commons and a long-term Wikipedian. I just started an outline for a Commons magazine for photographers, some kind of Signpost for Commons. For the first issue, I would like to feature one of your photos that I came across. It's for the section The story behind the picture (capturing events in history) and it would be great if you could answer some short questions. The photo I was thinking of is this one (alternatively: this one). These photos fascinate me because they're examples of Commons photographers being close to some events that changed people's lifes. With that said, I totally respect your anonymity and you choose whether you want to answer the first question or not. In case you're interested, you can answer the questions on my talk page or send me an email (kontakt[at]schulenburg[dot]biz). You'll find the questions on this page. Thanks in advance, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 13:35, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

Your banana photo

Hi Takeaway, I just wanted you to know I have used your beautiful photo of the banana plants at the market in my website. I am developing a glossary of ingredients, and your photo is just simply perfect! I hope you keep up the excellent work you do with photography!, and many thanks for your generosity in sharing the photos. It is much appreciated. Your photo is here if you would like to take a look. http://www.lovefoodies.com/veg-a-e.html Thanks once again. (I may need to use some more of your lovely photos, but I will let you know of course!)

Hi Takeaway, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Wiki Loves Monuments

Hallo Takeaway.

I would like to use your http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cappuccino_Chiang_Mai.JPG image in a banner for a donation drive for Radiopaedia.org (I am the founder). Our mission is to create the most up to date radiology resource online and to make it available to everyone for free. Removal of category in File:Diver in school of barracudas.jpg

Hi Takeaway, You deleted Category:Underwater diving in Thailand from File:Diver in school of barracudas.jpg without explanation recently. This seemed a useful category, why did you remove it? Cheers, · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 06:19, 29 April 2014 (UTC)

OK, that is an improvement on the original. Will you be adding a regional category for File:Caranx melampygus Thailand.jpg too? · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 06:28, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
Ah, you spotted another one, Peter! How about creating Category:Underwater diving in Phang Nga Province for not only Khao Lak photos but also for Similan photos? - Takeaway (talk) 06:39, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
I went ahead with recategorising those, and other, files. Have a look at Category:Underwater diving in Phang Nga Province and see if it's okay this way. - Takeaway (talk) 07:55, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
Ideally underwater photos of nature without a diver in them would not be categorized as underwater diving. Also some underwater photos of divers are not really underwater photos of nature - they may be underwater photos of people in a training or work environment. It gets a bit complicated, Do what makes sense after considering the full range of what might be included in a category. When in doubt it is probably better to categorize at file level. Multiple categories for categories often leads to contradictions and miscategorizing a subset. Good luck, · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 08:08, 29 April 2014 (UTC)

Cha-Am vs. Cha'am

Hi Takeaway. Your edit doesn't find my acceptance. The writing with hyphen (Cha-Am or maybe even Cha-am) is the general writing of all Wikipedia articles. Wheras "Cha'am" is hardly ever found. Could you please change the redirect in Category:Cha-Am? Thanks. --hdamm (talk) 11:46, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

Please change it to whatever seems best to you. It was only because Category:Cha-Am was empty and Category:Cha'am was full of media, that I changed one into a redirect of the other. Cheers, hdamm - Takeaway (talk) 11:55, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

Category:Lanna script

Hello Takeaway. Today I found in the "Media needing categories as of …" categories a lot of orphaned "Lanna script" files. If you had some time, could you please look over my edits concerning Category:Lanna script, please? Maybe you have another idea of grouping that huge amount of files? Maybe you can find errors I made? Thank you. --hdamm (talk) 09:36, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi hdamm,
I will take a look at them later this evening. Indeed a huge amount of files...

Yes indeed hdamm, it seems they will need double categories. I started the Category:Names of mountains in Lanna script just for this reason. What a pity. All the above deletions due to COM:PACKAGING. Is there any way to upload photos of (food) packaging and still comply with copyright regulations? - Takeaway (talk) 16:27, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

Drop me a line next time you come, I live in Yunnan. Just noticed your old Doi Suthep Chiang Mai panorama while uploading a newer one (not so great, but better resolution being four years later!). Pratyeka (talk) 06:25, 9 August 2014 (UTC)

Hey hi, I was meaning to make a new panorama too as so much has changed in Chiang Mai in the past few years. I'll now be able to postpone it a bit.
I haven't been back to Yunnan in years. I'll surely contact you next time I go. You must be based in Kunming, Pratyeka? - Takeaway (talk) 13:58, 12 August 2014 (UTC)
Not in Kunming but nearby, maybe 1 hour out of town. Kunming's seen a lot of changes recently and is going the way of the east-coast megacities ... fortunately, there are still plenty of beautiful natural areas around the province that are not under significant threat. My 16-35mm lens broke so I bought a new 50mm prime which is really sharp. Went shooting at the Wiang Kum Kam ruins south of Chiang Mai yesterday and made some incredible panoramas... Pratyeka (talk) 20:10, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
I've been to Kunming a few times and saw how within a few years whole parts of the city were torn down and "upgraded".... I really miss the beautiful Muslim street and the yummy food there. Going the way of the east-coast cities? What a pity for what was once such a laid-back place.
Yep. Nearly all upgraded now...
There's still a lot of the Yunnan countryside that I haven't seen and I really need to revisit a few places again too. I once hiked from the Nujiang valley to the Lancang valley but unfortunately, I'd lost my camera in Thailand just before arriving in Yunnan so all I have is memories of beautiful rhododendron forest up at around 3500 meters but no photos. I also wonder how the Yuanyang rice terraces are now. I was there some 10-odd years ago when they were only visited by a few western tourists a month and the bus ride from Kunming still went over the cobbled mountain roads and could take anywhere from 12 hours to 2 days, depending on landslides. Some 7 years ago the journey had already been shortened considerably with the new highway going down south. There was also this beautiful hidden valley near to the Guanxi border, in Zhuang region, that I'd love to revisit. Surrounded on 3 sides by mountains, the river that ran through it dropped down from that valley as a huge waterfall into the jungle deep down below. No idea where this is as I was taken there by the Cantonese guy who used to run a small guesthouse in Yuanyang before opening the Window of Yuanyang (?) office.
I've been to both valleys but never hiked across ... would be keen to do it. There's a mega-dam beneath Yuanyang now which has totally changed the character of the journey. That valley sounds nice! The Wenshan area (Vietnam/Guangxi border) is one of the only places in the province I haven't yet been, but should be curing that next year. I have a friend who married down there and is always raving about it.
Congrats with the new lens! By the way, there was something weird going on with your panorama of Chiang Mai. The pixelation of the image was a bit off. Might it have been caused by the panorama stitching program that you're using Pratyeka? - Takeaway (talk) 13:19, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
Agreed, the pano is dodgy. However, I plan to go up and take another one (in the afternoon, for better light) some time soon. Pratyeka (talk) 14:39, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

Wikivoyage?

Hi, Takeaway!

Nice food pictures! I noticed you're interested in travel, so perhaps Wikimedia's travel project Wikivoyage might interest you as well? :) ϒpsilon (talk) 19:16, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the invitation Ypsilon, but I'm quite busy on Wikipedia and Wikimedia already. Cheers! - Takeaway (talk) 20:25, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
