Hello, Pratyeka!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Re-uploading major changes in a picture as a new version, not overwriting it[edit]

Hello, I see you had made a major change and replaced the original file of File:Buddha_Seguntang_Palembang.jpg, File:Avalokiteshvara_Srivijaya_Art_Chaiya.JPG, and File:Maitreya_Komering_Srivijaya_Side.JPG. It was a major change that remove the detail, background and color. So I have to undo it. If you wish to make a huge change by cropping, removing background, or removing colors, please reupload the new version in a different name, thus not overwriting the original file. I reupload your works (removing color or background) in differnt names. Next time, if you made a huge change of other's works, please reupload it in different name. For example File:Buddha_Seguntang_Palembang_(grayscale).jpg, File:Avalokiteshvara_Srivijaya_Art_Chaiya_(background_removed).jpg, and File:Maitreya Komering Srivijaya Side (background removed).jpg. Gunkarta (talk) 20:27, 19 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for cropping the background and providing grayscale version. However, keeping the original file is a wise dicision and a good idea. Not all people need the cropped or grayscale one as the one you had made. Maybe some people need the color version, so by overwriting it will deprive others to access the original version. The improvement deserved to be overwrite upon the original file is minimal edit one (improved contrast, sharpen or saturation). Any major changes (color removal, cropping, removing background) should be re-upload in another version as the example I've provide you.Gunkarta (talk) 12:26, 20 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    1. First of all, nothing is deleted, old versions always remain, nobody is "deprived access".
    2. Regarding colors, in the one desaturated image, there was no actual color data there, it is just a yellow color cast. That's why I made it black and white, and increased the contrast. If you look carefully, you will see that the resulting file is clearer (more easily visible detail) and also smaller. Therefore, I do not understand why keeping the color has any point.
    3. Removing the background increases clarity and reduces file size. It takes a lot of time to do and you have wasted all of this time I invested to improve the experience for users.

Amazing. So a public notice which threatens the individuals has been deleted for copyright violation? I don't know who you are but you are not editing in the public interest. Nationalism has no place on Wikipedia. I will be making a complaint about this. Pratyeka (talk) 22:20, 17 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Category discussion warning

Vertebrata (female) has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!
