Hi Slowking4, in relation to this comment of yours.[1] So basically, lets say I want to upload a coin from the website (or a 2d metal plate). I would just have to use "PD-art" and leave it at that? Sorry for bothering you, I just want to be sure. Best, - LouisAragon (talk) 19:49, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

(talk page stalker and fellow coin enthusiast) @LouisAragon: coins are considered to be 3D works of art, even scans of them, so you would still have to acquire permission, metal plates are also considered 3D works of art, at least per "Commons:Currency", banknotes are 2D works of art, but only if scanned. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 19:52, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

Just for clarification, this picture falls under "Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag#Photograph of an old coin found on the Internet" (URL link 🔗), also feel free to join WikiProject Numismatics if you're interested. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 19:55, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

Donald Trung Thank you for your comments. Much appreciated. - LouisAragon (talk) 23:48, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
yes, regretfully the judges view the low relief of a coin as a sculpture. if it is really old you could use {{PD-art-70-3d}} and you would need to take a picture, or get an OTRS email release. Slowking4 § Sander.v.Ginkel's revenge 01:30, 6 January 2019 (UTC)

Just curious, but are you banned from the English-language Wikipedia's IRC? Do you ever participate in it? Do you ever use any Wikimedia-related IRC? What are your experiences with it? --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 11:18, 26 January 2019 (UTC)

Yeah, it's actually quite odd that Wikimedia projects depend so much on such an archaic messaging website which is also out of the control of the Wikimedia Foundation so filled with abuses by those in power. Do you mostly do it offline? --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 14:38, 26 January 2019 (UTC)

Whether to use Template:Cc-by-sa-1.0

If you're still more strict on releasing your photos, how about using or switching to Template:Cc-by-sa-1.0? CC BY-SA 1.0 is not compatible with any other license, and the licensing adaptees would be required to use just CC BY-SA 1.0 if they want to make modifications or blend other works licensed under the same license. Is there a place where we could request the Internet Archive Bot to run on Wikimedia Commons for pages in the "File:" Namespace? good luck with that. some grant money might concentrate coder minds. we are at the mercy of volunteer interest, not much project management. Slowking4 § Sander.v.Ginkel's revenge 23:35, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
Yeah, if I were allowed to edit the Meta-Wiki last year I actually wanted to propose that idea at the Community Wishlist but was declined for being "a net-negative editor", there are literally no venues on Wikimedia Commons itself to get Wikimedia Foundation support for Wikimedia Commons, at least the German-language Wikipedia has their own community technical wishlist, it's clear that the Wikimedia Foundation can have an amount of apathy towards Wikimedia Commons, probably because this project is behind more legal issues than the rest combined, at least I see more DMCA take-downs here than anywhere else. If only there was a non-free wiki that existed next to the Commons. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 23:46, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
well, the WMF is inscrutable, for example the uneven work on upload wizard. the code base is scotch-taped together. and wishlist was an innovation. most projects do not feel the love. you see WMF selling their priorities at wikimania with show and tell, but it is rare to see much community-WMF collaboration. the community voices are seen as shrill (the power users are accustomed to abusing newbies, and do not play nice). i try to give positive feedback, when i see some of them trying, but it is rare. the legal risk is minimal, google and FB have many times the DMCAs. the community has an ideological hatred of fair use, [3] so it will not happen. Cleveland museum of PD-art

Hi Slowking4, I'm cleaning up some of the Cleveland uploads and I noticed you're adding {{PD-art}} to some of the paintings. Great! Could you use {{Licensed-PD-Art|PD-old-100-1923|Cc-zero}} for any other paintings you encounter? See for example File:Clevelandart 1942.647.jpg. Thanks, Multichill (talk) 14:09, 17 February 2019 (UTC)

Addition of PD-tag to an image with CC-license per OTRS-ticket

Hello! You added {{PD-art}} in this edit. Other paintings covered by the same OTRS-ticked are not marked as PD and I'm thinking your addition may have been a mistake. I have therefore removed the PD-tag. --Bensin (talk) 23:53, 17 February 2019 (UTC)

sure File:William Holman Hunt - The Scapegoat.jpg has it. i will go back and add. i do not have OTRS permission, so i cannot read the ticket. the CC tends to apply to the art, and the PD-art to the scan / photo. your source link has rotted, so there is no provenance trail. Slowking4 § Sander.v.Ginkel's revenge 00:31, 18 February 2019 (UTC)
Yes, the painting in "William Holman Hunt - The Scapegoat.jpg" is in the public domain because it was published in 1854 and the artist died in 1910. Because any "faithful photographic reproduction of a two-dimensional public domain work of art" is also considered public domain, the photograph of that painting is also in the public domain. The painting in the photograph "Svenska_syndabockar.jpg" was published in 2005 and painted by Markus Andersson (born 1968 and to my knowledge still alive). According to the OTRS-ticket, the copyright owner has allowed use of the photograph under a "Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported"-license. I don't see how a PD-tag applies to this file. --Bensin (talk) 22:06, 18 February 2019 (UTC)
did the artist take the photo? cannot tell since the OTRS is opaque. if not, then PD-art is necessary especially in Europe. Slowking4 § Sander.v.Ginkel's revenge 02:09, 19 February 2019 (UTC)
{{PD-art}} only applies to public domain work. It does not matter if the artist took the photo, as the "share alike" part of the CC-BY-SA 3.0 license makes this photo also under CC-BY-SA 3.0. --Wcam (talk) 02:20, 19 February 2019 (UTC)
not for me. PD-art applies to all derivative photos of 2d artworks, including CC-BY-SA. the community by it's embrace of bridgeman is repudiating all claims of derivative copyright, or other restrictions such as NC or SA. "PD-Art may be used by the uploader of a photograph taken by somebody else to assert that the photograph can have no independent copyright as it is simply a faithful reproduction of an old, public domain, two-dimensional work of art. The tag can be used on any such photograph regardless of the source country, following a poll in July 2008." Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag
but by all means litigate it at village pump if you like drama. Slowking4 § Sander.v.Ginkel's revenge 02:27, 19 February 2019 (UTC)
"PD-art applies to all derivative photos of 2d artworks, including CC-BY-SA" - not true. It is called PD-Art and the template itself explicitly states "public domain work of art". What you have in mind might warrant another template that may not currently exist, but definitely not PD-Art. --Wcam (talk) 02:46, 19 February 2019 (UTC)

Orphaned talk pages

How about after a sysop deletes a page its talk page gets automatically moved to "Commons:Orphaned talk page archives/26 February 2019" for future reference (unless vandalism or something is included), a system like this would probably be most beneficial for Wikipedia's but could be pioneered here. This way the deletion log will also automatically point to the archive and it will be moved to a sub-page named "Commons:Orphaned talk page archives/26 February 2019/DELETED PAGE" so it's quite easily accessible. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 07:11, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

you are assuming they would want to make accessible past deletions. they sometimes do not link to deletion discussion on image talk. tracking deletion is not a priority. Slowking4 § Sander.v.Ginkel's revenge 12:37, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

How often do you think about your block on English?

Hello 👋🏻 Slowking4, I've been conducting a survey under the radar on users who have been banned for life (even if those handing out the bans don't outright say that) from various Wikimedia websites and usually go about e-mailing them, but as you're such a prolific contributor you must probably upload a lot of images or other media files that would be very much suited for English-language Wikipedia articles but can't add them for obvious reasons, so how often are you confronted with your block on the English-language Wikipedia? What goes through your head when it happens? How does it make you feel? How did this (Mobile 📱) or this (Mobile 📱) make you feel?

And as you're quite a special case being highly active with the English-language Wikipedia community offline as well, how often is your block or other limitations brought up during events? You don't have to answer anything, I'm just curious if you're in the same boat I and many whom I will not name here are. Thank you for taking the time to read this. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 17:45, 28 February 2019 (UTC)

If you created the content yourself, enter {{Own}} as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} or {{Cc-zero}} to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

File:Piper Weiss 5190338.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

You have been blocked for a duration of 3 months

You have been blocked from editing Commons for a duration of 3 months for the following reason: A persistent pattern of pattern of personal insults, disrespect for the community, sockpuppetry, and other behavioral issues, as discussed in my close here.

If you wish to make useful contributions, you may do so after the block expires. If you believe this block is unjustified, you may add {{unblock|(enter your reason here) ~~~~}} below this message explaining clearly why you should be unblocked. See also the block log. For more information, see Appealing a block.

While your productive contributions to Commons are wonderful, you seem unable to maintain any amount of general kindness and civility. Constantly complaining about the actions of other users and nitpicking their behavior is not productive, and I am no longer wiling to tolerate the actions of those to seek to worsen the tone of discourse on Commons. Spite is almost never an attitude that helps anything.

I reserve the right to unblock you sooner if you formulate a reasonable set of unblock conditions, and to extend the block if it is clear that your behavior will not change after three months. At a minimum, such unblock conditions will include:

  • Complete restraint from personal insults and combative behavior, broadly defined. This is intentionally much stricter than the standards for editors as a whole on Commons - until you demonstrate that you can interact in an generally appropriate behavior, you must avoid rudeness altogether. If what you have to say is not obviously useful and kind, simply do not say it. Frankly, your best course of action would be to avoid community boards altogether for a while unless you have something unambiguously helpful (like "Here's a tool that can help with the technical problem you're having") to say.
  • Refraining from sockpuppetry on Commons, and refraining from using Commons to assist your enwiki sockpuppetry whatsoever. While Commons does not import sanctions from other projects, we also will not be a safe haven to enable block evasion.
  • Use of edit summaries for all edits.
  • Use of proper punctuation and capitalization in talk page and community board posts.
  • Removal of "Sander.v.Ginkel's revenge" from your signature - implying that you intend to continue the behavior of a community-banned user is not acceptable.

I hope you will be able to change your behavior and resume your positive contributions. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 23:40, 4 April 2019 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) This practically infers two possible outcomes. Either Slowking4 will be soon upgraded to LTA (a de facto banned user), or he came out of the block in July, 2019, and nothing will effectively change. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 06:30, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
I am afraid you are right. But on the other hand, I think it's good to give this user one last chance to change their behaviour. Jcb (talk) 08:40, 5 April 2019 (UTC)

Unblock request declined

This blocked user asked to be unblocked, but one or more administrators has reviewed and declined this request. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked. Other administrators can also review this block, but should not override the decision without discussion.

Request reason: "this block is out of process, against the block policy. "ensure that the user has been appropriately warned, preferably using a block warning template." ; no discussion at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/Blocks and protections. you have not presented evidence; you have not provided bright lines about civility. you are escalating controversy from other projects. Slowking4 § Sander.v.Ginkel's revenge 01:38, 5 April 2019 (UTC)"
Decline reason: "The purpose of "appropriat[e] warn[ing]" is to ensure the user is aware of our polices and expectations. As a user with a tenure of more than 8 years, one with a sister project block for "repeated personal attacks," one who has been the subject of (and participated in - i.e., aware of) numerous ANU threads about their behaviour, and one who has explicitly referenced the {{Be civil final}} template (!!!), you are understood to be well aware of the expectation of civility; accordingly, as I suspect you know, this request is mere disingenuous wiki-laywering. In fact, you've apparently not been templated (or hitherto blocked) as a courtesy given your productive contributions (e.g., [4][5]); you have, however, been asked to stop (merely one example), which any reasonable person would interpret as a warning, and directed to noticeboard discussions (merely one example) indicating clear disapproval of your conduct. Indeed, there was consensus that you should be blocked for incivility in July 2018 (one wonders why it was not enacted) and, of course, the thread which prompted the current block. COM:BLOCK requires an understanding of the issue and a credible commitment to discontinue. If you are not prepared to acknowledge that your approach is unacceptable, and to act on that acknowledgement, you should be prepared to remain blocked. Эlcobbola talk 16:01, 5 April 2019 (UTC)"
Administrators: This template should be removed when the block has expired.

Oppose at this stage, you are completely failing to address the block reason - Jcb (talk) 08:40, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
My reading of the block rationale agrees with the view that the Wikimedia Commons community consensus is that "escalating controversy from other projects" should be avoided. However responding to Slowking4's history of using their Commons account to continue disputes from other projects (per examples in the block rationale) is a response to de-escalate, not the action that brings controversy from other projects. An administrator taking de-escalative responsive action is applying policy, not going against it. Slowking4 need only let go of these very old battles and focus on Wikimedia Commons content to address the grounds for the block. I observe that the blocks on other projects are very old indeed, but the locus of block appeals or clarifications must be those projects not this one.
P.s. rereading COM:BP, it is worth noting that the definitions of 'evasion of blocks' links to Wikipedia:Banning policy, an interwiki link along with a couple of others added by Lotje in 2015. This does not address the many differences in the way that Commons administrators apply blocks and the Commons community does not have a similar banning process. However this block has no directly associated ambiguity and would be unlikely to be viewed as a technical rationale for an appeal. -- (talk) 09:26, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
@: what did I do wrong? Thank you for letting me know. Lotje (talk) 10:41, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
You have not done anything wrong. I have made a proposal at AN to clarify. -- (talk) 10:52, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
  •  Oppose block seems reasonable and valid in the light of all the AN/U complains. --Steinsplitter (talk) 10:23, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
  • Note: Slowking4 is continuing his anti-Commons trolling here. I see no reason why this user should be unblocked on Commons, when they are actively working against it's mission. His advice to educational projects preparing free content is "take the good work elsewhere, like Internet Archive, commons does not deserve it". -- Colin (talk) 07:44, 7 May 2019 (UTC)
@Colin: That is in addition to m:User:Slowking4/wikicommons has cancer and the copyvios on m:User:Slowking4/commons.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:08, 7 May 2019 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) @Colin: so? At very least, I don’t see from Slowking4 things like this. Such latter goes unchecked – there is some reason to decry Commons’ toxic culture. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 12:22, 7 May 2019 (UTC)
    • Incnis your issues with one admin aren't really at all relevant to whether an educational program should create and upload media to Commons. Slowking's trolling feeds and encourages a belief that somehow one's own disappointments and slights against oneself deserve the full attention of the community and when that fails to materialise, then the entire community has a "toxic culture". It might just be, you know, that Commons is a collection of random contributors with random concerns, and you aren't necessarily one of them today. You might want to consider whether you gave me the slightest consideration when that same admin attacked me at AN/U. No, you didn't lift a finger. You had other concerns. Which is fine. On the page I linked, a coordinator of some education program spectacularly failed to do the basics required of any such project on Wikipedia, and is now blaming Commons when it didn't go swimmingly well for them. Slowking and now yourself, are merely latching onto this negativity in order to squeeze in your own griefs, rather than actually dealing with the topic at hand: student projects on Wikimedia. -- Colin (talk) 13:28, 7 May 2019 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States – Back for 2019!

This user participated in Wiki Loves Monuments 2019.

Want to show your participation in Wiki Loves Monuments 2019? Add {{User Wiki Loves Monuments 2019}} to your userpage!

Hello! Last year you contributed to Wiki Loves Monuments 2018 in the United States. Thanks to people like you it was a great success, with over 1,900 people contributing over 10,000 photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the country. Hundreds of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, improving our open knowledge about United States history, culture, and heritage. If you haven't seen the winners yet, be sure to check them out here.

I'm pleased to say that we're back this year with Wiki Loves Monuments 2019 in the United States, and I'd like to welcome you to participate once again in the event. Check out our updated event page for more information. Just like last year, you'll be able to upload your photos of any registered historical site in the United States through the end of September (even if the photos were taken before this month).

If you've traveled and taken photos of monuments in non-US countries, you can see if those countries are also participating here.

Once again, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2018, and we hope to see you again in this year's event! If you'd like to respond to this message directly, please do so on on my talk page. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 05:14, 1 September 2019 (UTC)

My membership dues

Slowk,

I was accused of being a member of the evil DC cabal over at RfA. Their quota of snarky comments has already been filled, so I thought I'd direct mine to you.

As far as I remember I paid my dues ($10 I believe) once in the last 10 years. I just don't get down to see the Smithsonian all that much. But since I've been accused of being a member of such an esteemed organization, I should pay my dues - complete with back dues if you can pull up the records. I'm happy to say that my financial situation should allow my payment before Christmas without any major problems. Of course you could consider making me an honorary lifetime member. In any case, please send me your bill via email.

As alway (in cabalery)

Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States 2019 – Last day to enter!

This user participated in Wiki Loves Monuments 2019.
Want to show your participation in Wiki Loves Monuments 2019? Add {{User Wiki Loves Monuments 2019}} to your userpage!

September 30th is the last day to upload photos for Wiki Loves Monuments! We're thrilled that the United States has almost reached 4,000 contributions so far this year. Of these images, ~370 (~9%) have already been used to help illustrate Wikipedia articles and pages on other wiki projects, which is fantastic.

If you've already made a photo contribution this year, thanks so much! If you have any last-minute photos of U.S. historical sites to upload and enter into the contest, today's the day to do it. Check out the United States event page for more information. Judging will take place throughout the month of October, after which the top-ten national finalists will be announced in early November.

If you've traveled and taken photos of monuments in non-US countries, you can see if those countries are also participating here.

As always, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments! If you'd like to respond to this message directly, please do so on on my talk page. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 05:49, 30 September 2019 (UTC)

Block evasion

Hello, Just for the record: I noticed that you used a sock to upload files on Wikimedia Commons: Special:Contributions/Coveyclovey (CU confirmed at enwiki and same EXIF). CC: @Pi.1415926535: . --Steinsplitter (talk) 15:28, 17 October 2019 (UTC)

This was 6 months ago, and the 3 uploaded files are beneficial with no apparent use of the account for anything bad per se.
Is there evidence of socking on Commons since then, asking as this may influence any later appeal? -- (talk) 15:34, 17 October 2019 (UTC)
He was blocked in April and socked in May with the aforementoined account (he may not use other accounts to conribute on commons while blocked). He has also a numer of accounts with no edits created after the block, and a few with edits created before the block. I haven't changed the blocking parameters, but added the socking for tracking. Additionally, there is no consensus to unblock. --Steinsplitter (talk) 15:48, 17 October 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification. I'm not sure that anyone would care about accounts created with no edits, that's not literally socking, though it may be a silly thing to do if they intend to appeal. -- (talk) 16:18, 17 October 2019 (UTC)
I still question the block. I don't agree with all of Slowking4's methods, but he did bring something that few users do: a push to move forward. That push wasn't always gentle, and sometimes it was indeed too rough, but we need it. That's not even talking about his contributions in the File namespace. Also, I believe Slowking4 had quite a gripe with Jcb, to put it mildly. Considering that a) He wasn't alone and b) Jcb is no longer an admin because Slowking4 wasn't alone in his complaints, I think this actually does change the situation. Without Jcb as an admin there's much less reason for conflict between these two. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 21:51, 17 October 2019 (UTC)
As for using a sockpuppet to contribute files and help the project, I really can't make a problem out of that. That would be nothing but bureaucracy. He could have also uploaded the files to, say, dewiki (or any other project that didn't block him) and wait for a file importer. By blocking Slowking4 indef and disabling email and talk page access, we basically turned our back on him. It's almost an invitation to sock. I've seen it before. By offering no realistic perspective, we incentivize ignoring the system. If you accept the rules, you'll quite possibly never edit again, even if you've changed. If you sock, you're invincible and it may be the only way you could ever prove you did change. I'm not saying socking is right, but we absolutely incentivize it with our current methods. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 22:04, 17 October 2019 (UTC)

Category discussion warning

Category:Benda_Shaughnessy has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Thank you!
