If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. - Please remove any references to other users like "Rama's revenge" and "Sander.v.Ginkel's revenge" from your signature and refrain from doing this in the future. You changing it from Sander.v.Ginkel to Rama is a very bad signal as it implies that your still trying to play the system. I'm willing to give you a chance, but you have to stop with this crap. - This seems a tangent for this unblock request, because use of signatures has nothing to do with the block history.
- @Jeff G.: based on my reading of your request, to ping you I should be able to use @Jeff G. ツ: . Could you explain why COM:UPOL, or another guideline for signatures, would confirm that your signature with a redundant/misused Japanese character and a link to a template is okay, but Slowking4's is too confusing? - I suggest the easiest path to get this request competed. So consider a default signature until folks are clearer about what is potentially confusing or unacceptable against COM:SIGN. Many years ago I had problems on the en.wp with some editors that did not like me putting anything "gay" in my signature. It was easier to just remove any customization, and I haven't bothered since, even when putting pronouns in signatures became popular with WMF employees. --Fæ (talk) 22:32, 17 November 2020 (UTC)

- For simplicity and to avoid confusion, it would be potentially a good move if html tags or surplus links were removed from signatures. However this would need a proposal to amend COM:SIGN. There are some users who I have to constantly double check what their actual user account name is, because their signature is subtly different, which is confusing, but that's not strictly against current policies.

- Support Unblock with whatever relevant conditions an admin may find appropriate based on past evidence of Commons policy infractions. This unblock request has attracted very few comments, and none appears to have anything to do with past edits to this project which are against policy. Folks that have criticized the current Commons culture or community are not banned from editing Commons and it's not surprising that Slowking4 was writing about Commons on meta to blow off some steam, considering for several months they could not raise issues here on their talk page. Perhaps it's time for Slowking4 put past issues aside to demonstrate they can not only 'comply' but be seen to adopt good faith even when they may have critical issues to raise, which hopefully they can do on this project in a more effective collegiate way through consensus and proposals for system improvement. For others interested in seeing what Slowking4 does next it would be super if they would stick to demonstrating the good faith behaviour as defined by project guidelines, and understanding the difference between evidence and perceptions, helping this project be a non-hostile environment for everyone. --Fæ (talk) 10:27, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
- Support, Slowking4 is a valuable contributor that has uploaded many high quality works to Wikimedia Commons. Even if this discussion would not favour an unblock I would advise the closing admin to take into account that Wikimedia Commons is vital for every other Wikimedia website and that they might need to upload ".djvu" files for Wikisource, so perhaps an unblock from "File:", "File talk:", "Category:", and "Category talk:" namespaces as well as gallery ones might be wise. Especially since no known disruptions have ever been known from this user in these spaces and blocks are only meant to prevent further disruptions (especially since partial (un)blocks are already technically possible). --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 11:40, 18 November 2020 (UTC)

RE: Flickr greylist
Replying to your message on the Meta-Wiki.
Perhaps a new user group can be created? Or perhaps some users get "Blacklist exemption". But the problem simply exists that the largest online repository of images on Vietnamese history, or perhaps second (2nd) largest after after Wikimedia Commons remains the Flickr user Manhhai. There should be an alternative to blacklisting as blacklisting is like using a sledgehammer for a nail, you will probably break the thing you're trying to make. I honestly want to brainstorm more alternatives, which is why I posted it to the VP instead of the VPP, denying immediate Flickr review recognition might be a start, but I think that people here have a wrong perspective on backlog.
Many people here look at internal backlogs on things to do, rather than seeing the backlogs of libraries of books in the public domain to be imported, historical maps that need uploading, museums that need to be photographed, Etc. These are the enormous backlogs that also need addressing. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 22:41, 13 February 2021 (UTC)

Wikimedia France
As a response to your message on the Meta-Wiki, I (for obvious reasons) can't contact them through the Meta-Wiki. I will try to enhance my French and call the French national archives directly, maybe if I'm lucky someone speaks English there but generally French and German people tend to not speak English (especially those with important positions, for whatever reason). I know that Wikimedia Nederland and Wikimedia Deutschland work with archives and often asks them to digitise, but I am not sure if Wikimedia France fulfills this same role. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 13:02, 8 July 2021 (UTC)

Reply on a page I can't reply to
To reply to your message, I understand this, but it shouldn't be the only reason, the Wikimedia Commons has more utility than just GLAM content, we also host images from museums that wouldn't want to donate themselves and a lot of people have uploaded their own valuable private collections to the Wikimedia Commons such as user "Huddyhuddy". On paper this website should be the go-to website for freely licensed educational media content, yet whenever this topic is discussed it's being ignored. I am going on vacation soon so I will deliberately not look at any Village Pump posts for at least a week and only bother with the ongoing discussion about the copyright status of works previously not protected by copyrights under Communist Vietnamese Law. But other than that I will "take a break from community discussions" as I prefer to focus on uploading. Of course, the lack of outreach can have many reasons, another example I would cite is Wikisource. While researching religion in South Vietnam I recently found a website called Sacret-Texts.com, they seem to know a lot about US copyright and try to make sure that as much as possible on their website is in the public domain. This website seems like "a perfect match" for Wikisource, yet most of these public domain texts aren't at the Wikisource.
In general I seem to get the impression that other than Wikipedia only the Wiktionary, Wikidata, and to some extend Wikispecies seem successful, in case of Wikispecies this can likely in the future be complimented through good Wikidata integration that can automatically generate entries and I know that that Swedish bot that basically single-handedly wrote the Visayan-language Wikipedia mostly works on species of organisms. In general I just see a lot of missed potential at Wikimedia websites and the Wikimedia Commons in particular is missing out, Wikinews could have been successful if it made better choices and as it has no deadline I think that it could still happen. Wikisource and the Wikimedia Commons both seem to be better matches for university students to contribute their time to, yet we mostly see them flock to Wikipedia to do relatively minor things. Wikisource has the potential to be actually useful for university researchers of history by hosting otherwise inaccessible works. The Wikimedia Commons likewise has the potential to be a great source of information but it's clear that many admins here don't believe in that, despite being an educational site it shouldn't be allowed to educate people??? Anyhow, that's a call back to some comments I got by a user that clearly didn't want to help out. The issue is that despite being collaborative the collaboration more often seems to be focused on deletion rather than creation, because it's easier to delete than create, so the lower threshold will invite more people in, the WMF makes more tools to make deletion and blocking even easier, and more people are attracted to it because of the tools in a cycle. Yet very little is done for creators like user "Fae" who just needed some minor backing to help them with a huge import project.
I understand why Google helps Wikidata and not the Wikimedia Commons, there is a financial / commercial incentive to do so, if Google and other search engines depend on Wikidata for facts meaning that they don't have to invest large amounts of money into something volunteers do literally for free then it makes sense, hence you see many commercial databases similar to Wikidata migrating their content there and it has seen an explosive growth. My issue is that the Wikimedia Commons does the exact same for media, there is no need to build a new website from the ground up and bear all the costs to host media if you're a GLAM institution, there is a categorisation system here that is more customisable than any other on the internet (as far as I know) and Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons (SDC) will add close Wikidata integration and in the future improve searchability (it's still being actively developed now, but I think with new talent and more features in the future it can be better than anything we have now). Yet we don't see GLAM's even talking about any of this, we don't see anyone who has "the spirit of free educational content" actively discussing moving their stuff here. People like user "Fae" help us realise that it can be a central hub for such uploads with their enormous imports, but I see very little to actually move here. If they want it to be a GLAM-friendlier place then they should come here and tell us exactly what they want and how they want it.
I also have some comments about Krassotkin as a friend of mine e-mailed him and got some disturbing news, but out of fear I would rather not discuss that in the open so I will e-mail you later about it... --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 07:52, 15 October 2021 (UTC)
- My personal hope is by convincing one major GLAM to be "a standard donor" here that others will follow, have one really big name and it will cause others to join like a domino effect. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 07:55, 15 October 2021 (UTC)
GLAM's
Yeah, I understand, but completely giving up is a surefire way to make no changes. I don't think that we should ever give up on the accommodation of GLAM's, people see Wikidata as valuable because "it connects to Wikipedia", not because of the Wikimedia Commons, Wikisource, or even Wikinews, and certainly not Wikivoyage (when I first came across that website I genuinely thought that it was a Wikia Wiki or a "parody Wikisite", out of ALL the proposals I've ever seen at the Meta-Wiki Wikivoyage seems like the one that is the least compatible with the Wikimedia Movement being how individualistic and personal travel advice is and how much of "an odd fit it is", I am still baffled that Wikivoyage is at the Wikimedia wiki's, though I personally do like some of its content and think that a lot of it is well-written, just that it's "more news than Wikinews"). Wikidata is a strong point and I think that the Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons (SDC) will make the Wikimedia Commons better for GLAM's but it needs more work and more people who believe in it. Unfortunately, many prominent people here said things like "just ignore SDC" and some even actively work against it.
GLAM's can have mutual benefit from joining the Wikimedia Commons but just re-licensing their works and expect us to upload it just means that more people will be burned out and "less complete" collections. I recently saw a Dutch GLAM register and I will try to personally guide them to try to be a common uploader here, wish me luck. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 07:55, 21 October 2021 (UTC)
