Over categorization[edit]

PLease limit the number of categories to the most relevant. Avoid mother categories like Category:Sun but use its more precise sub-categories. Pierre cb (talk) 15:02, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You're invited to provide input…[edit]

If you're interested in providing input, please engage in the discussion on the talk page of the draft.

Question from the CPUG Board[edit]

Dear user group member,

I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.

With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.

That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.

However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:

Commons:Commons Photographers User Group/Board Elections 2022

We'll gather feedback until December 27, and we'll keep you in the loop about the outcomes of this process.

Thanks so much for your ongoing support of our group. I wish you, your family, and your friends all the best.

Most memorable shot 2022 / Wikimania 2023[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I wish you a Happy New Year! As it has been our tradition at the beginning of the new year for a while, we're sharing our most memorable shots of the past year with each other. I invite you to share a picture that is particular meaningful to you and to describe why that's the case. Also, as Wikimania 2023 will be here before we know it (August 16 to 19), please consider adding your thoughts on our planning page, where we gather ideas for how we can make Commons photography more visible than in the years before.

All the best to you, your family, and friends! --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 21:01, 2 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you[edit]

Dear fellow Commons photographer,

I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.

At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 19:36, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Proper categorization[edit]

Hi and happy new year! First of all, thank you so much for taking the time to go around and taking photos of sites and places around the Philippines. This is very valuable work and I appreciate it. Anyway, I would like to request that you try to take a bit more time ensuring that your photos are placed in their proper categories. As stated by the Modularity principle of Commons:Categories, which is an official policy of Wikimedia Commons, "The page (file, category) should be put in the most specific category/categories that fit(s) the page". This extra work is important because "the category structure is the primary way to organize and find files on the Commons".

Here are a couple of examples using your recent uploads. First, you placed the photo File:The Triumph of Science over Death, Muntinlupa City.jpg under Category:Alabang, Muntinlupa, but this photo is actually much better placed under the following more specific existing categories: Category:The Triumph of Science over Death and Category:Festival Supermall. Second, you placed the photo File:St. William Cathedral, San Fernando, La Union.jpg under Category:San Fernando, La Union, but this photo is better placed under Category:Saint William the Hermit Cathedral in San Fernando, La Union. It is okay to categorize photos under their city/municipality category only if there is no more-specific appropriate category for it. But, optionally, you can also create new categories, especially if you have uploaded multiple photos of the same building/site/location.

I'm not sure if you have already enabled the following gadgets but these are extremely helpful in ensuring that files/photos are placed under their proper categories: Help:Gadget-HotCat and Help:Gadget-Cat-a-lot. If you have further questions, don't hesitate to reply here. Also, you might want to talk with your fellow Pilipinas Panorama Community member JWilz12345, who is already very experienced in categorization, if you want more help with categorizing. — seav (talk) 07:06, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Ralff! Again, kind reminder to add the proper category for your photo uploads. Thanks! —seav (talk) 13:41, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
