It has been found that Image:Celilo 1867.JPG has "images.google.com" in its description. The images uploaded on Wikimedia Commons should always have a free license, explicitly given by the copyright holder. If you have the permission, send it to our OTRS system or the image will be deleted! This is an automatic message by Filbot.--Filnik 07:32, 27 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mosquito Fleet?[edit]

Re: [1]: Unless we know exactly what boat it is, it's hard to be sure it was part of the Puget Sound Mosquito Fleet rather than a lake steamer (probably not by the design, though) or something used up in the straits. Anyway, that's why I used the more general category. - Jmabel ! talk 18:12, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect you're not an admin and can't change the category name, but it's got to be done - it shoudl have been capital-E "East Kootenay" as in Category:Steamboats of the East Kootenay region; East Kootenay and West Kootenay are always capitalized, sometimes also North Kootenay (which is sometimes used for Revelstoke and Arrowhead/Nakusp etc); Central Kootenay only in reference oteh regional district, though, or that's my gut feeling and though not from that region the parlance woudl say "Central Kootenays" anyway; the RD-name is a recent fiction. Anyway if you have the power to change the name of the category, please capitalize thte "E" on East. It looks really strange without it. Like writing "south Dakota"....71.7.131.60 23:46, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

PS though this is more of a wikipedia issue, recmomended title for the article/template to the west of that is Steamboats of the Kootenai River and Kootenay Lake, although the precedent set by Steamboats of the Arrow Lakes in including Columbia River portions of the route without stating it in the title could also work i.e. Steamboats of Kootenay Lake; I was just trying to be nice to the Kootenai/y River...; I hadnt' thought of the "Columbia headwaters" in my title deliberations for an East Kootenay article because of the Kootenay River, which of course is only pat of the Columbia heaedwaters in a regional sense, i.e. not as uppermost drainage basin...71.7.131.60 23:49, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Arrow Lakes were (before the dams) really a widening of the river into a large glacially-carved trench. Between Revelstoke and Arrowhead the Columbia River was a flowing river, and between Upper and Lower Arrow lakes there was a 15 mile stretch called the Narrows which was more river-like. Boats that ran on the river stretches also ran on the lakes. Larger lake vessels did not run up to Revelstoke, but by the time the very large boats like Bonnington were built, the rail line had been extended down the Columbia from Revelstoke to Arrowhead, which became the effective head of navigation. On Kootenay lake, similar things were happening. The Kootenay river was the major tributary, only this time at the south end. At first the rail line of the Great Northern only reached Bonners Ferry Idaho, and this was the starting point for navigation at least for traffic coming from the US. This required steamboat traffic to use the Kootenay (or Kootenai) River to reach Kootenay Lake. Eventually the rail line was extended from Bonners Ferry up to Kootenay Lake itself, and Bonner's Ferry was less important. There were other rivers running into Kootenay lake, and steamboats were used on these. However, the overall pattern was similar to Arrow Lakes, which is that all boats used the lake, and some of the smaller ones used the rivers. Probably not enough to justify separate articles. Downs and Turner discuss these operations in their books. Turner's book (Sternwheelers and Steam Tugs) I especially recommend.Mtsmallwood (talk) 17:25, 21 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Categories[edit]

I was hoping that you might help sort out some of the categories around Category:Steamboats of western North America, since you clearly know more about this area than I do.

Right now Category:Steamboats of western North America is in Category:Steamships of the United States, which seems wrong to me on two counts. For one thing some of these are in Canada: at the least, if we are putting it in a U.S. category we should also place it in a parallel category for Canada. But, more than that, most of these seem to be boats, not really "ships". One of the consequences of the current categorization is that none of the Puget Sound Mosquito Fleet is under Category:Boats in the United States. - Jmabel ! talk 02:56, 21 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not remove useful categories from Category:Images from the German Federal Archive images (see [2]). Within Category:Poland during World War II category we try at add to each image categories related to time, place, people and subject. --Jarekt (talk) 04:45, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with categories you created like Category:Resettlement of Volksdeutsche. My only objection was the removal of Category:Poland during World War II, 1940, since I am trying to get most images from subcategories of Category:Poland during World War II to be in subcategories of at least Category:Poland during World War II by year and Category:Poland during World War II by location. So If there are existing categories in the image then keep them unless your category is more specific subcategory of the one you are replacing or unless they are wrong.
Another observation I have about your recent work is that although your categories are good, their names are not very specific. For example nothing in the names of Category:Targeted humiliation of people, Category:Collaborators in Poland or Category:Poles driven out of homes categories suggests that they are related to WWII events only. Eventually they will have to be changed. See Commons:Categories and Commons:Naming categories for guidelines. Otherwise I think you are doing a great job which is much appreciated. --Jarekt (talk) 14:03, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What's the use of this category? We have Category:Jewish people of Poland during World War II, where most of 153 (as for now) files are 1939 German photographs? They should be doubled? pibwl (talk) 00:49, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please refer to my explanation on your talk page.Mtsmallwood (talk) 04:09, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Line categories[edit]

You categorised the Category:Swedish American Line‎ as Category:Ships of Sweden. In the case of both ships is it correct. I am working on all ships to bring them under IMO (almost 400 done) and found that some lines have ships in various countries. So my suggestion is to categorise Ships by country and Ships by operator. If usefull Operators of ships by country.

You started a category Motor ships by name. Useful, but I suggest to rename the category Ships by name. In that case I can add ships working on the IMO numbers. --Stunteltje (talk) 08:22, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I assume I solved the problem by creating a new Category:Ships by alphabet. Find a discussion on the Village pump. Regards, --Stunteltje (talk) 09:09, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello!

Defenders of the Polish Post Office in Free City of Gdańsk weren't soldiers. They were civilians who short time before the war, bought the weapon. They foresaw that would become something terrible. The defence of the Post Office didn't have the military meaning. For that reason categories which you added, are incorrect. Greetings from, Gdańsk! --Starscream (talk) 05:19, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the understanding. I appeared your work on Commons and I must praise. Excellent gathering. Because we explained the misunderstanding, I will withdraw Your edition on these two files with post-office employees. Greetings from Gdańsk! --Starscream (talk) 04:09, 25 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Mtsmallwood!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Brant Point Light[edit]

While I applaud the recatting you're doing on lighthouses, it needs a touch of care. While generally I use Category:Lighthouses on the NRHP in XXX for both the current tower and old photos of any earlier tower, I don't think we should do that for places where both are still standing and one of the two is not on the NRHP.

That's the case with the subject -- there are actually two different lighthouses with the subject name, both still standing. The newer on is on the NRHP; the older is not. So, I've changed the older one out of your new cat. Similar situations exist in other places.

BTW, thank you for your care in leaving my user cat behind with the photo. Not every editor understands that. I appreciate it. Regards, . . . . Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talkcontribs) 18:39, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Me again. You seem to be adding

I feel like I'm piling it on -- sorry --I've made this very mistake myself -- it's easy to mix up cases in i's and ells in this font -- but you mistyped Category:LIghthouses with detached keeper's quarters. Since commons is case sensitive, this will frustrate people who type it as you intended as Category:Lighthouses with detached keeper's quarters (note "LIg" vs "Lig"). . . . . Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talkcontribs) 18:52, 11 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, there already exists since 8th of march the Category:Stamps without perforation. What shell we do? And ist the right grammar not "Category:Imperforated stamps"? --R. Engelhardt (talk) 19:15, 16 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that after I created the catetory. The usual philatelic term is "imperforate" but of course "stamps without perforations" is also accurate.Mtsmallwood (talk) 06:53, 21 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I will change the category. --R. Engelhardt (talk) 14:42, 21 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

She was built at the Odense Steel Shipyard, about three nautical miles south of the lighthouse, in the shallow Odense Fjord. Since the shipyard is the only industry in the fjord, she's almost certainly being taken to sea for the first time, which accounts for the crowd. The chart shows a channel with around 7 meters of water in the fjord (it's deeper where she is in the photo), which accounts for the broad expanse of bottom paint showing. And yes, the center of the channel is only 100 meters from the light and she has a beam of 56 meters. A tight squeeze.. . . . Jim . . . . Can you please please upload the original size image for a flickr image? This can be found from the 'all sizes' button here...before you upload your cropped version of this image here. Why do you keep uploading the lower resolution image? Always, go to the "all sizes" button and click and save the 'Original' maximum resolution version of the photo before you crop, colour, edit (etc) this image and upload it here on Commons.

Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 01:55, 3 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

When abstracting a category...[edit]

... do be careful about what should move into the new category and what is specific to the particular photo. This was one of several follow-up edits I recently did on your changes, where you moved a category that pertained to the source of a particular photo to the new category about the person in the photo. - Jmabel ! talk 03:13, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorting "Cape"[edit]

I have reverted your three additions of default sorts which would have forced "Cape X Light" to sort as "X, Cape, Light". The USCG, the Admiralty, and WP:EN all sort lights by their full name, see, for example, Lighthouses in Maine or Category:Lighthouses on the National Register of Historic Places in Maine. I could also cite Commons' Lighthouses in Maine, but since I am almost the only contributor there, it does not prove any wide acceptance of my position.

The only exception generally made is to sort "The X Light" as "X Light, the" for names such as The Cuckolds Light and The Graves Light.

Thanks for all your work in creating new categories for those lights that did not have them. That's been on my to-do list, but almost all of my WMF time is spent doing Admin tasks which, while necessary, often do not advance the project. .     Jim . . . . Thanks for uploading File:Rock Harbor Light sm.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Lighthouses in Nova Scotia[edit]

Hi Mtsmallwood, thanks for your work on lighthouses in Nova Scotia! Regarding the Black Rock lighthouse, I've found it at lighthousefriends.com. In case you haven't noticed, pictures by Dennis Jarvis almost always have geographic location information attached to them (in this case coordinates of camera location: 45° 8′ 13.66″ N, 64° 51′ 41.63″ W) so you can check on a map where the picture was taken (in this case: definitely not St. Anne's Bay, Cape Breton). Doesn't matter: he's still not a steamboat! It would be reasonable to create a category for him, and put his steamboats (or steamboat companies) in that category, but putting Category:Steamboats of Lake Coeur d'Alene on a portrait of him is like putting the "Model T" category on a picture of Henry Ford. - Jmabel ! talk 16:15, 27 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know if you are still around, but if you are: back in 2008 you wrote on File:Leschi dock ca 1910.PNG, "Archival source says date is unknown, but based on clothing styles and known dates of vessels running on lake matching those shown here, and style of postcard, this appears to be ca 1910." The University of Washington Libraries dates another printing of this same photo, File:Leschi Park on Lake Washington, ca 1901-1903 (SEATTLE 3955).jpg, as 1901-1903. Do you have any reason to think they're wrong? (I'm in frequent correspondence with them, and would pass it along if you do.) - Jmabel ! talk 05:13, 18 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, I'm still around. One of the steamboats appears to be en:Cyrene (steamboat), which has the pilot house on the upper deck. This was a rebuild of the steamer in 1909, and the vessel was taken out of service in 1912. So circa 1910 seems appropriate.Mtsmallwood (talk) 20:56, 28 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
