Reno Arch

[edit]

Greetings: I undid your recent edit on File:Willits Sign Gateway to the Redwoods 2016 Detail.jpg because the old 1963 Reno Arch File:Reno Biggest Little City Sign 1973.jpg was given to Willits and it is now the Willits Arch. Same object. That is actually stated in the description and has been since I uploaded the image. If you have a differing opinion, let's discuss it. Cheers! Please don't use No permission like this

[edit]

You marked File:Exterior 5 med.jpg with {{No permission since}} with no explanation. We usually trust the uploader; I cannot see any reason why OTRS would be needed for this file. The template gives the author a week to start the OTRS procedure, while the user hasn't any contribution here since nearly twelve years. The file is used in several projects. I undid the edit, but would still want an explanation. –LPfi (talk) 09:23, 21 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

LPfi - Single use uploader with the username "Rmart" which stands for "Reno Museum of Art." The only EXIF data is that it was edited in photoshop. I worked for OTRS for years and while I understand the "Trust the uploader" I also care deeply about copyright holding and if someone cares about having their photograph on Wikipedia they'd care enough to provide permissions - one week or ten years later. I can even go take a better quality photograph of the museum when I'm in Reno (again) next month to replace this photograph. I don't lose sleep over these things, however, so, you do you. Cheers and thanks for your contributions to Wikipedia. Missvain (talk) 16:21, 21 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You may or may not trust the contributor, but this is not due procedure. The question is not about the user caring or not caring about Wikipedia (they probably don't care), but about whether Commons cares about its sister projects (including Wikipedia). If you can take a new photo, then thanks very much, I really appreciate it (and if this image can be replaced by a better where it is used, there is less of an issue). But my question remains: what reason is there to doubt the declaration of own work? I don't see how the user name swings the issue in any direction. Should my photos be deleted because of lack of EXIF were I not to answer an OTRS request, perhaps because I have passed away? If you think all photos need OTRS, or all photos not by trusted users, then try to get a change in policy, which hopefully would include grandfathering of old photos, don't ask for OTRS from a user neither you nor I believe is around any more to see the request. –LPfi (talk) 17:32, 21 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion File:Bâtiment Descartes Plus - Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées.jpg

Hello Missvain, I don't know you delete a picture insere but a photograph himself about a building. Its native name was File:Lifteam-jean-luc-sandoz-©11h45-BD-3.jpg. Maybe there is an error when somebody tried to rename it? Please could you check and tell me how I can fix it please? Thanks Yasminkaa (talk) 00:04, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

User:Yasminkaa - I have no idea how to fix this, I'm sorry. Perhaps you can ask at Help Desk. Missvain (talk) 00:11, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks I will looking for again. Yasminkaa (talk) 00:13, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The move and redirect target was deleted citing Commons:Deletion requests/File:Bâtiment Descartes Plus - Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées.jpg, saying "There is a copyright watermark on this file. This contradicts the CC attribution". The wording seems to suggest there is a misunderstanding: all non-PD files here are (c) somebody, pointing that out in a watermark doesn't change anything, and is fully compatible with a CC licence. I cannot, of course, see what was told about author or copyright owner in the file description and watermark. –LPfi (talk) 13:40, 28 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of Windows_7_Vzhled.png and Windows_7_-_Basic_theme.png

[edit]

Hello, why did you deleted my two pictures? I have no clue what is wrong with them, they are made by me, please explain. Thank you.--Ajrocket1 (talk) 07:59, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

User:Ajrocket1 - These files were nominated by User:Patrik_L. on June 16, 2021. He posted the nominations on your talk page on that day (User_talk:Ajrocket1#File:Windows_7_Aero.png). We give one week for deletion review discussions to take place, with exceptions. However, due to so few administrators (like myself) who actually delete content, they sit around longer. Therefore, the file was nominate for well over 30 days. Patrik nominated these files as "Non-free file." As an administrator, it is not my job to do all the research into deletion nominations. It is up to the nominator and then fellow users to present the case. Patrik was the only one who presented a case and I looked at the files and simply saw Commons:Screenshots saw that they violated our copyright policy as being non-free software. I will not be undeleting them. If you wish to request that, you can go to Commons:Undeletion requests. Please review the screenshots policy for future uploads. Thanks! Downloaded it, Many thanks for undeleting it for me, Take care, Warm Regards, –Davey2010Talk 20:22, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I don't understand why you say there is no valid reason for deletion. File description says that the author is unknown. A photo from 1979 that was taken in Germany is copyrighted until 70 years after the creator's death. The creator can't be death for 70 years. So this is a copyright violation. The used license is incorrect as an unknown author can't have published the file with that license. -- Discostu (talk) 20:26, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Discostu - That was an error. I'll delete. (I have closed over 500 deletions over the past week, so I'm bound to make one mistake!) Cheers and thanks for bringing it to my attention. Missvain (talk) 20:28, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

File deletion

@Missvain: Thanks for deleting this file: Commons:Deletion requests/File:Princely coat of arms of the Gediminids.svg. There is identical file but in .gif format (see: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Princely_coat_of_arms_of_the_Gediminids.gif). Please delete it as well because it is the same file and even includes link to a copyright "www.gerb.bel.ru" (see white text bellow the horseman). -- Pofka (talk) 18:58, 29 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Missvain,

In Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Patriot62371, you closed with a decision to keep File:Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial uncirculated silver dollar coin with box and COA.jpg. As far as I can tell, no one in the discussion supported keeping this file. Can you explain why you decided to keep it? The reverse was designed by U.S. mint sculptor-engraver Phebe Hemphill, who is an employee of the mint, but the obverse (depicted in the file) was designed by Justin Kunz, an Artistic Infusion Program contractor, and not an employee of the mint. (source). Can I renominate the file for deletion? Thanks.  Mysterymanblue  18:35, 30 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

User:Mystermanblue - Hello there. I think it's pretty obvious - I deleted the wrong Abraham Lincoln file. Pretty clear when you see that the one you wanted kept was deleted and the one you wanted deleted was kept. I'll fix it. Thanks. Missvain (talk) 19:46, 30 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Commons:Deletion requests/File:Tsuburaya, Eiji 02.jpg

Hey Missvain, what is the reason that Commons:Deletion requests/File:Tsuburaya, Eiji 02.jpg is free in the US? I'm still not seeing it. Thanks, AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 02:57, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I assumed good faith, as presented by User:Eiga-Kevin2 and reviewing the Hirtle Chart. The majority of pre-1977 works that are not copyrighted are public domain in the United States, with some exceptions. Like I wrote, feel free to renominate if you disagree. PD-US-not renewed

[edit]

Hi Sarah, I hope you're doing well. I accidentally uploaded File:Eugene McCown - Three Heads - 43.109 - Detroit Institute of Arts.jpg a couple of years ago and it was nominated for deletion. I wonder if this painting would be covered by {{PD-US-not renewed}}? I always stayed away from these more recent American works and the copyright rules surrounding them. Do you have an experience with this? I found some more images with similar issues (File:Lawrence Edward Kupferman - Old Roxbury - 43.105 - Detroit Institute of Arts.jpg for example). Would be nice if we wouldn't have to delete these. Multichill (talk) 21:19, 4 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

User:Multichill - Hi old friend. I see on the source page that the artwork was donated to the DIA by the Works Progress Administration. If it can be proved that this artwork was funded by the WPA (and a lot of artwork was, as we know!) then it can be on Commons under US Fed public domain. Missvain (talk) 21:22, 4 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That's also a good option. Do you know if a catalog for these works exist? And if this wouldn't cover it, how to check if it was registered for copyright extension or not? Multichill (talk) 10:32, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Multichill - I do not know on either end. In my years of working with WPA artists, I never came across a catalog or a registration program. I'd probably contact the DIA. In a brief Google search when I investigated the artist and WPA work that was the only link I found. Missvain (talk) 15:26, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

"Just an FYI re your categorization of this file: for files from NARA that have identical JPG (for article use) and TIF (lossless version for editing), only the JPG needs to be categorized. (See Category:NARA TIF images with categorized JPGs)."

Since then I have learned to understand the wisdom of this practice, so I am passing on this knowledge to you. Best wishes, Krok6kola (talk) 14:42, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

This category appears to be HAER images rather than HABS images, e.g. "Laughery Creek Bridge, Spanning Laughery Creek, Aurora, Dearborn County (HAER)". So it would go ultimately into Category:Historic American Engineering Record images of Indiana. Regards, Krok6kola (talk) 18:51, 31 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Krok6kola Correct. Not sure why it was originally categorized there when they were uploaded, like most HAER images. Feel free to add it if you haven't. I appreciate it. It's also for the bridge, so it should remain under the bridge's category (which it wasn't), of course. Cheers. Missvain (talk) 20:00, 31 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This file may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Headless Lenin.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Hello,

I am messaging you because a contest for a sound logo for Wikimedia is being developed and your opinion as a Wikimedia Commons admin is appreciated. My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

Larry Monroe Forever Bridge

[edit]

You recently deleted the File:Larry Monroe Forever Bridge, Austin, Texas.jpg. I was under the impression that this file was uploaded by the photographer User:Evelina Monzingo and that she released the rights at the time of the upload. Evelina Monzingo is a pseudo name of the photographer. Can you give me the history of that file so that perhaps we can get it properly restored. Thank you BuffaloBob (talk) 13:40, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@BuffaloBob - Hi. It doesn't matter if the photographer released an artwork protected by freedom of panorama freely. The artwork, which was created in recent years, is likely copyrighted because it was created by a living artist. Unless the photographer or the artist provides evidence of that release, we cannot house that artwork on Commons. Please see COM:FOP US. FOP is only OK for buildings and this is an original, contemporary artwork that is possibly based on a copyrighted image of the subject.
So sorry, unless permissions are provided by the visual artist that completed this artwork, or proof is provided that it is copyright free, we cannot house it on Commons. Cheers. Missvain (talk) 14:51, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
What I am asking you is can you provide me the user name of the person who uploaded the photo. I have requested the photo from the photographer/artist for use on Wikipedia and she was willing to release the rights. Now that you have removed the photo I have no way to verify who uploaded it so I can communicate with them.98.4.240.114 12:21, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
So, what you are telling me is that the photographer does not own the copyright on the artwork on the Bridge itself and that is owned by the artist who created the bridge art. Can you tell me what is the difference between the file: Larry_Monroe_Forever_Bridge,_Austin,_Texas.jpg and this one: File:Stevie Ray Vaughan Memorial Helmick.jpg. I am hoping that you will assist me in getting a photo of the bridge on the bridge wiki page. Can you help?BuffaloBob (talk) 13:19, 7 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Correct. And a bridge is not the same as the artwork on the bridge. A basic normal bridge is one thing, but, the artwork on the bridge is copyrighted by the artist (or the copyright owner, which could be a city, county, company, etc).
We would need confirmation from the creator of the mosaic that this artwork is freely licensed for it to be housed on Commons. I've been working in the realm of public art for over a decade and I don't feel comfortable risking keeping a possibly copyrighted artwork on Commons without proof that it is public domain or that the artist has released it. The photographer, unless she created the mosaic/mural, does not own the copyright to the artwork she photographed. You need permission from the artist (or city/county/state/company who owns it). Missvain (talk) 16:28, 7 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see any file called File:Stevie Ray Vaughan Memorial Helmick.jpg on Wikimedia Commons. It's actually housed as a Fair Use image on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Stevie_Ray_Vaughan_Memorial_Helmick.jpg
And it is fair use because it is being used to document the artwork in the article infobox. That's basically the only way fair use of copyrighted artworks, like the Vaughn Memorial, can exist on Wikipedia. If the bridge mosaic/mural was notable enough to merit inclusion on Wikipedia on it's own, then it could be used in the infobox.
But, as it stands, we cannot house it on Wikimedia Commons. Missvain (talk) 16:30, 7 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I am trying to learn here so please be patient with me. I found this at COM:FOP US: "Bridges, cloverleafs, dams, highways or walkways are not ‘buildings’ under the definition of architectural works." In the U.S., such works do not have a copyright and therefore may be photographed freely, whether or not from a public place. BuffaloBob (talk)
Yes, as I stated above, a bridge is not the same as artwork on a bridge. If I took a picture of a concrete bridge it's one thing, but, if I took a photograph of artwork on a concrete bridge and uploaded it to Commons, I'd be possibly violating the creator or copyright owner's rights. I can get the release from the artist. Do you have a sample of the release that is required from her and how do I post it on Wikimedia? BuffaloBob (talk) 16:59, 7 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@BuffaloBob - They can follow the instruction at COMMONS:VRT. Once that is submitted, a VRT agent will review it and work with you or the artist accordingly. I won't be involved in the process. Cheers. Missvain (talk) 17:00, 7 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Notification about possible deletion

[edit]
Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Why would you delete images that have gone through OTRS process where owners have given their consent for the images to be uploaded. Please do proper investigation before hurriedly deleting all the photos you deleted. I don't know if this is a deliberate attempt to waste volunteers effort and time. Please undelete the photos!Ruby D-Brown (talk) 07:34, 6 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Ruby D-Brown Hello there! I don't know what you're referring to. Feel free to take any deletion unrequests to Commons:Undeletion requests. Have a great day and thanks for contributing to Wikimedia Commons! Happy holidays. Missvain (talk) 14:59, 6 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

I have been reverted in my YT license review for this image and alerted to you decisions in this DR. As the deciding admin, could you please also process your decision on the file page, where a license review request template is still open en therefore the image will keep popping up in the maintenance category? I can imagine this is starting to get very annoying for the uploader by now... Ciell (talk) 00:24, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Ciell - It appears that it is indeed a dead source file making it impossible to verify the licensing. So how about you just renominate it for deletion? I will defer to another admin to review it. Missvain (talk) 16:55, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I could, but just want to double check, because the last decision in the DR from 27 May 2021 was also yours (there are several nominations on the one page), and the private setting for the video was already apparent back then. I am also not sure how to process but I want to work on the backlog in the cat a little bit and there might be more older upload lingering around in there... . What should I do about a prolific editor who is adding copyvio images to Wikimedia Commons wholesale?

[edit]

This editor, Littleboyblue2000, is adding copyvio images wholesale to Wikimedia Commons, claiming them as his own work. Every one I've checked is a blatant copyvio. I've requested speedy deletion of the first three I came across, but there are quite a few of them. He's probably created none of the many he's added. Carlstak (talk) 17:01, 1 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Carlstak - thanks for your due diligence with this. I left a warning on their talk page. If they continue to upload these files, I will block the user. Happy New Year! Missvain (talk) 00:44, 2 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I also took the liberty of deleting the majority of their uploads. Missvain (talk) 00:53, 2 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much, Missvain. It really got me when I saw all the copyvios that guy had made; I know what it feels like when a person claims as their own the work one has spent time and effort creating. Happy New Year to you as well, I hope you have a great one.;-) Carlstak (talk) 02:28, 2 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Category discussion warning

College basketball teams in the United States by name has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!
