Category Arcade[edit]

Hi, please observe: a cloister is not an arcade! --Wuselig (talk) 18:06, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oops, I was using the secondary english definition of cloister, meaning "monastery", and assumed that those images were arcades in a monastery. My mistake. Mindmatrix (talk) 18:11, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
arcade: vaulted passageway suported by colums. The difference to most cloisters is that the space between the colums there is usually not open. In German there is a differentiation between "Arkade" and "Laubengang" which are both translated into English as arcade. The "Laubengang" does not have to be open between the colums, but that is because the "Laubengang" is usually one story off the ground. --Wuselig (talk) 20:52, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your "refine category" edits[edit]

Thank you for your precise categorization of the species in my Nature pics. But please don't do the same with my user categories (like here, it took me a lot of (manual) work to organize my galleries! -- Alvesgaspar (talk) 14:41, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In that particular edit, I retained your user category. I think I may have inadvertently deleted a category in a few rare occasions. If so, my apologies. (Though wouldn't it be better to structure your categories so that Category:Quality images by Alvesgaspar is a sub-category of Category:Photos by Alvesgaspar, and likewise for your other categories? I do see you have a few images that are not photos in that category, so perhaps splitting that up may be useful. Just a thought.) Anyway, I'll certainly ensure that I don't accidentally delete your user categories, and I'm sorry if I've created extra work for you. Mindmatrix (talk) 14:54, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, I can understand why you undid this revision (and this one too), in which I deleted one of your user categories, but why undo this and this? In the latter two, I retained your user categories, and simply refined the species category. (I also moved them to the bottom.) Just curious. Mindmatrix (talk) 15:43, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a difference between road signs and street signs?[edit]

I was moving this and this over to Category:Road signs in Toronto, when it occurred to me that there might actually be a distinction between road signs and street signs. I would have thought not, although if I had to guess I'd say street signs indicate the name of the street or road, and road signs provide other directions to traffic. Is there a meaningful distinction, or do we simply have two (almost) duplicate category trees? I'd say the latter, but am not sure. --skeezix1000 (talk) 17:53, 11 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Personally, I agree with you distinction, but I'm not sure others would. I had created Category:Street signs in Canada as a temporary intermediary between Category:Street signs by country at one end, and Category:Road signs in Toronto and Category:Road signs in Canada on the other. There's an intermingling of terms here that's confusing and should be resolved. For the record, English WP uses the term Traffic sign, though entries in en:Category:Traffic signs include articles such as en:Road signs in Norway. We should probably have a broader discussion about this, and public signage in general, uh, somewhere. Perhaps the Village Pump here and on WP? Mindmatrix (talk) 13:29, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

hi Mindmatrix,

While I have created templates to categorize establishments by year I have realized that you have categorized railway stations by opening date and when you create a new category like 1871 establishments you are used to categorize it to 1871 events. But there are just a few subcategories in "events by year" so It will make much trouble to change my template in the way tat any establishment will be categorized automatically as "event", theoretically from 3.000 BC up to today. I just want to let you know this, and that you must not think I am boycotting your work. Once, when every year up from the 19th century will have its subcategory "events" its a 1/2 minute work to create another template which will categorize the establishments as events... --anro (talk) 20:55, 16 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have started to create templates for Railway stations, see Category:Railway stations opened in 1910 ff (the template is Template:Railcat) --anro (talk) 00:41, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have no problem with using a template to categorize them. However, wouldn't it make more sense to have the template with parameters for century, decade, and year, instead of a three-digit decade such as "191" for 1910s? That is, instead of , shouldn't we use ? I think the latter would make it easier to categorize by decade, when that need arises, without any further changes. (It would need the use of switches in the template, of course.) Mindmatrix (talk) 02:01, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Here is the template for decades: Template:RailwaystationsInDecade, it is used for categories like Railway stations opened in the 1920s, a template for centuries is actually superfluous, coz there are just three with railways... --anro (talk) 13:33, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
On a slightly related point, which I mentioned to Anro this morning, I'm not sure that these railway categories belong in the establishments category tree to begin with -- there is a separate category tree that organizes buildings by completion date. I've raised the issue at Commons:Village pump#Establishments vs. Buildings category trees to get some feedback, including both your two cents. --skeezix1000 (talk) 19:12, 4 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cool[edit]

This is interesting! --Skeezix1000 (talk) 18:04, 16 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Heh - I didn't even notice the other file. I've been uploading quite a few files from flickr, but about half the Toronto-related CC pics I find have (ahem) already been uploaded. Mindmatrix (talk) 18:16, 16 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I thought that tree looked familiar.

Ahem, indeed. But mostly only those in the past year or two or so (I go onto Flickr about once a week and download anything that seems interesting - or, more often than not, that I have time to do). There are thousands upon thousands still to be uploaded. Delighted, by the way, that you are taking the time to recognize some of the photographers on Flickr who release their images through CC. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 18:24, 16 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I figure they deserve the credit; a useful side-effect is that it also makes it easier to determine if a file has already been uploaded, as the upload tool doesn't catch (or warn about) all duplicates. Mindmatrix (talk) 19:50, 16 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

HotCat and MW 1.15[edit]

It shouldn't fail on MW 1.15, the dependency on wgNamespaceIds should be optional. If it isn't, that's a bug in HotCat. Is your wiki publicly accessible, so that I could go take a look? Lupo 19:02, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The error is fixed now. Any version of our MediaWiki:Gadget-HotCat.js since 07:20, 10 July 2010 (UTC) should also work if wgNamespaceIds is not present. (There was a simple typo, "unknown" instead of "undefined".) Lupo 07:26, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I noticed that you care to add / edit / remove categories from the files. Very often it is tedious to change the categories to many files in the same category. In these cases comes to your rescue the tool "Visual File Change". It allows you for example to edit / add categories to many files in the same category in one minute. Help:VisualFileChange.js It's great like you! :) Raoli ✉ (talk) 02:15, 29 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

About the categorization of stamps by colors.[edit]

Hello, Mindmatrix!

I want to note that from the strictly philatelic point of view the stamps like this or this are not "yellow" or "blue". Catalogues describe them as "multicoloured". The most of today’s offset stamps are multicoloured (there are rather rare exceptions, though). As a rule, catalogues specify the colours of a stamp if it is printed in 1 or in 2 colour(s) (and sometimes, in 3 colours). All other stamps are "multicoloured".

For example:

The mentioned stamp is described as "multicoloured", though the blue colour is really dominant. The stamp with Lenin is multicoloured, too, in spite of the wide yellow frame.

Best wishes and every success in your creative work at Wiki.

Dmitry Ivanov (talk) 22:19, 12 January 2013 (UTC) :-)[reply]

Thanks for the message. For the record, I'm not sorting stamps according to philatelic colour definitions. I'm sorting them by the most prominent colour, as a casual visitor to Commons would expect. Using strict philatelic sorting would result in awfully large Bicoloured stamps and Multicoloured stamps categories, and small categories for all other colours, so I don't think that would be useful. If you disagree with this, please let me know, and we can discuss it to find a better solution. Mindmatrix 22:34, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
As of me, I do not attach special importance to the categorization of the stamps by colours, and I am not ready to be engaged in it. I think the present sorting ("unprofessional", so to say:-) has its "right to life", so I have no objection. May be, another philatelist, stricter and more consistent, would disagree with this, and some arguments are possible in future. Best regards, Dmitry Ivanov (talk) 23:24, 12 January 2013 (UTC).[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Casson_Trenor_01.jpg&diff=104233583&oldid=55433715: he's a restaurateur who is (as the description says) a leading advocate for sustainable sushi. So why remove Category:Sushi? - Jmabel ! talk 00:51, 14 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I recently created Category:Sushi chefs that may be more suitable; if he's not a sushi chef, perhaps a more appropriate category can be created. (I think the primary category should include only media about the food itself, though most people don't seem to bother creating sub-categories for people related to a product for many of the categories I've come across.) Mindmatrix 03:53, 14 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I understand what you are trying to do. I don't think he's a chef; he's a restaurateur, writer, and activist. He's certainly a person associated with sushi, and there ought to be some connection between him and that category. I'd be perfectly glad to see the connection made some other way, but I think what was there before is better than eliminating it entirely. - Jmabel ! talk 04:30, 14 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (:File:Violet Life Savers advertisement, 1921.jpg).

If you created the content yourself, enter Own as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, GFDL or Cc-zero to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

File:Slice of crostata alla Nutella for World Nutella Day.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Category discussion warning

Births by year has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Thanks for uploading File:Flickrwashing deletion notice, Wikimedia Commons.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Water taxis[edit]

Given that Category:Taxis in British Columbia is a subcat of Category:Automobiles in British Columbia, it doesn't seem to me that it applies to Category:H2O Taxi, which is a fleet of boats. - Jmabel ! talk 22:32, 18 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Although I agree, I think that a water taxi is a type of taxi and belongs in that category. This seems to be a problem for that entire category hierarchy; see for example Category:Taxis in the United States. This probably warrants broader discussion. (For the record, the topmost Category:Water taxis uses Category:Taxi vehicles, which contains water/motorcycle/automobile subcats, so that's probably the best solution for this. Then again, moving Category:Taxis in Toronto to Category:Taxi automobiles in Toronto for consistency would seem counterproductive.) Mindmatrix 22:40, 18 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Mindmatrix! I notice you changed this file from the Canadian beach cat to the Albertan, I guess because the photographer is from Medicine Hat. However, I notice that the Flickr source is tagged “ocean”—and of course we have no seacoasts. It’s also in a “Travel” album, which would suggest it’s not from the photographer’s home area (I haven’t browsed it to see if there’s a discernible itinerary). IMO it would be safest to leave it in the Canada cats, unless or until more clues can be found.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 18:13, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds reasonable. (Note that I sorted it into this category because it was already sorted into Category:Clouds in Alberta, not because of the photographer's hometown.) Mindmatrix 18:23, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Note: Inspecting the photos taken at about the same time from that user's Flickr stream, I found this, taken four days earlier in Comox, BC. Then there are a bunch of photos four days later (same day as beach photo), none of which have sufficient info to determine location, then there are photos from Alberta about 10 days later. The beach photo is almost certainly from BC. Mindmatrix 18:28, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks; I hadn’t noticed the Clouds cat. It certainly reminded me of the central/northern straits area (not that that counts for much!) and facing the sunrise would be consistent with a location on the east coast of the Island.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 18:42, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Categories - NZ vs. Canada[edit]

Hi, I've noticed that File:Te Anau-Milford Hwy, South Island (482988) (9484927736).jpg (and several others) was put into 'Winter in Manitoba' category, while it is clearly from New Zealand. Why? Just because the author is from Canada? Both the file description and the coordinates indicate NZ. JiriMatejicek (int:Talkpagelinktext) 07:39, 4 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

From the edit history: "Transferred from Flickr via Flickr2Commons". It was part of a batch upload, likely containing hundreds of files, and was either mislabelled by the Flickr user or accidentally included in the wrong Flickr set. When using Flickr2Commons, I set the category at upload time by inspecting a small subset of files at random from the Flickr set (instead of editing each of hundreds of files afterward, which is more laborious), and for the set that included these files, all but five were about winter in Manitoba, and I didn't notice the five outliers from the large set at the time. I do usually visit the category page afterward to spot check (you can verify by inspecting my editing history), but seemed not to have done so in this instance.
I almost never consider the author's residence when setting categories for batch uploads, the exception being cases in which I recognize the location depicted in the photos. Mindmatrix 13:28, 4 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I found a few more NZ files from the same set, and have re-categorized them. Mindmatrix 14:45, 4 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

duplicates[edit]

Hi you recently uploaded a lot of duplicate files - see i.e. here. Please try to pevent such actions in future. Thx. --JuTa 17:58, 4 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I used Flickr2Commons, and although it sometimes warns about potential conflicts (including files with a specific name already existing on Commons), it doesn't always do so, particularly when someone else has previously uploaded the files using different names. It also misses situations in which a Flickr user saves the same file using different names in different albums, or those with camera filenames (eg - IMG XXXX); for the latter, Flickr2Commons suggests adding a prefix, but if someone else has already uploaded the files with a different prefix than the one I chose, the tool won't issue a warning. It'd be a lot easier if Flickr2Commons warned about duplicates based on file signatures, or some similar functionality. (It does catch some instances, but clearly not all of them.) Template:Ping Files need not be geotagged in order to be refined into more accurate categories. This one is part of a set, so comparing it to those with similar times that depict signage gives enough information to more finely sort it. The point of these files is to depict the highway along its more than 800km route, not just a few short segments in major cities.
At any rate, I stopped the upload at the time you posted your message above (there were hundreds more pics in the set). If you find these files inappropriate for Commons, nominate them for deletion using the "batch task" utility in the tools menu. (I'll likely nominate some of them, as there are a few blurry ones in the set; the Flickr2Commons thumbnails aren't always sufficient to determine this.) Please consider adding iw-links here on Commons[edit]

Dear Mindmatrix,

Thanks for creating new categories here on Commons as you did recently for Category:Black River (Hastings County) or Category:Unity, Saskatchewan. It would be great if you could as well add the interwiki-link to the corresponding page on en-wikipedia by clicking here on Commons in the sidebar menu under 'In Wikipedia' on 'Add links' and then putting in the appearing pop-up box the link to the corresponding article on en-wikipedia. This will add a link to Commons to all language versions of the corresponding article on en-wikipedia. Moreover this will avoid the corresponding article to be included in the maintenance category en:Category:Commons category template with no category set.

Many thanks if you could consider to do so, indeed this would reduce my efforts on adding these iw-links later through patrolling the pages listed on the pre-mentionned category on en-wikipedia. I would like to thank you for all the great work you are realizing on en-wikipedia and here on commons.

Pong. I replied again. I don't mind you undoing my "work" ;). I think I've communicated some of the reasons regarding some things and even admitted they may not be best. If you don't mind, please let me know what you'll revert and why so that I might learn better or provide a reason or discussion. Also, I will eventually take a break to sleep but I will return, perhaps in a day. I intend to wrap up Windsor. Last week I spent improving Windsor on WikiVoyage and WikiData learning those. I don't really get WikiData as it seems like quite a mess, but I suppose it could one day become useful to A.I. or something. ~ JasonCarswell (int:Talkpagelinktext) 15:20, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
OMG I can't believe how awesome Cat-a-lot is and feel stupid for doing it all painfully. At least this will go better now. I think I'll address some of the other new stuff we discussed tomorrow. My mind is fried but I'll keep going on autopilot today till I can't. ~ JasonCarswell (int:Talkpagelinktext) 16:21, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
So here's a perfect example of the waterfront dilemma.
File:Riverside Windsor.jpg
is a structure by the Bert Weeks Memorial Gardens on Riverside Dr E (and there are several Memorial parks in Windsor that people don't specify or leave coordinates), and that image is labelled Assumption Park - but Assumption Park is back by the bridge, but they moved the name from the water back a block by the Assumption Church etc, and the waterfront was renamed Windsor Sculpture Park - at that end by the bridge. I think the safe name for all of the above and then some is "Riverfront Trail" which passes through all of them, yet doesn't get confused with Reaume, Ganatchio, or the beach. Unless you say nay I'll presume it's a go, though I don't yet know what I'll do about it from here forth. ~ JasonCarswell (int:Talkpagelinktext) 16:56, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to bother you again. I created the "Riverfront Trail in Windsor, Ontario" as a catch all for any misc stuff that doesn't fit in the subcategories. I created "Civic Terrace" and "Festival Plaza" (they look naked without "in Windsor, Ontario") but the WikiData infobox is stuck on "Category:Civic Terrace and Riverfront Festival Plaza in Windsor, Ontario". Advice? ~ JasonCarswell (int:Talkpagelinktext) 17:41, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I did it again. I'm locked in. "Riverfront Trail" is on the maps and is shorter than "Riverfront Bike Trail" so I thought it'd be better. Also I made "Riverfront Trail" before realizing there was already a "Riverfront Bike Trail" and also on Wikipedia. So I got that jammed up as I was trying to consolidate. Also, I intended to have all of the stuff along the trail in the root "Riverfront Bike Trail" as well as individually in their respective sub-categories which I also made a list for. I don't know if this kind of redundancy is proper. Until now I'd been sub-categorizing without redundancies for simplicity, even though it's not simple to go digging in subdirectories for stuff. But in this case the park division lines are not as clear cut. ~ JasonCarswell (int:Talkpagelinktext) 18:40, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Template:Ping Be careful about using terms as found on maps, as they may contain unreliable user-generated names, or generalized names. I tend to use names from municipal websites, which often take time to find but tend to be more accurate. And contrary to everything I've told you before, if you run into a name that has potential to be used elsewhere, do a quick web search to see if there are other uses for the term. "Riverfront Trail" is used elsewhere, though the category you created is OK for now. It'll likely get moved in the future, once other trails with this name are also created.
Too true. The Montréal Biosphere and the Montréal Biodome are two very different buildings. (I recently lobbied to correct the filenames for a couple.) I don't change anything I don't feel confident about, but I'm far from perfect. I do search for stuff from time to time and generally go by the strongest sources when in doubt. I think my biggest problem is remembering to keep it all in perspective when I get OCD over the details.
Regarding the redundancy - it depends. Are all sculptures in Category:Windsor Sculpture Park part of Category:Riverfront Trail? If so, then just add Category:Riverfront Trail to the former category. If not, then the redundancy is OK, or perhaps created a subcategory for the specific items common to both, though the category name may be rather unwieldly. As you note, it's not clearcut, so you may as well leave it as is for now. Mindmatrix 21:39, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes - but is the inverse okay? I had added all relevant parks along Windsor's riverside part of the Riverfront Trail. The sculptures continue out of Windsor Sculpture Park proper, but I think it kinda stops at Dieppe Gardens. The Spirit of Windsor is a displayed monument but not a sculpture. (Most of the sculptures are tacky.) I haven't been downtown in a while so maybe there are more sculptures but the trail certainly continues further. ~ JasonCarswell (int:Talkpagelinktext) 03:59, 20 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright and infobox questions[edit]

Any chance you might help me with these copyright and infobox questions? User_talk:Yann#File:Kārlis_Johansons_-_189x300.jpg ~ JasonCarswell (int:Talkpagelinktext) 03:27, 23 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Ping Regarding File:Kārlis Johansons - 189x300.jpg, I've deleted numerous categories (they belong on Category:Kārlis Johansons, which is already included). I've also deleted the source Latvian text, which was copied from the source, as there's no indication that it was released under any free licence, and the Google-translated text, as it depends entirely on the Latvian version. As far as a copyright notice for the file, the current Template:Tl seems applicable, so I've removed the tag. Mindmatrix 13:03, 23 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The Latvian source text was copied but the translation was not entirely Google-translated. The Google-translation was terrible so I went through breaking it down into the general gist, word for word, leaning on the limited Google-translation making it more of my interpretation - though the information is still based on the Latvian article, as accurately as I could. Oddly enough, I just discovered in an old tab on my browser here, that there is a word-count limit on Google Translate and that's only about 3/5 of the article. So I have more to go. I'll refrain from adding that to the image. I had included all of that so that when it was "judged" regarding its copyright issue that "they" would be better informed. Also, I added the extra categories so that they could be sorted into categories I might not know about or deleted. For example: Latvians + Latvian people + People from Latvia = the same but not all categories do not all have redirects. Don't worry, I won't be adding a bunch of stuff like this. This is one very specific interest that vaguely relates to one of my projects and I saw a huge gap. I hope to find some CC images of his tensegrity sculptures or artwork but the pickings are slim.
I was going to add the monoskop.org/Karl_Ioganson verson of that Karlis portrait too as an alternative version, but since I've got your attention I thought I'd check first. All of the images on that site look like they might have potential to add to the commons, but I haven't even begun to check their dates or rights. At the bottom of the page it says "The content is available under fair use." So maybe. But later. I have that 2/5 to translate as well as the Polish and Russian Wikipedia articles to fold into my attempt at a definitive English article on Karlis before I "consume" that Monoskop article.
Any chance you know about info boxes and why wikipedia.org/wiki/Karlis_Johansons isn't working? I've spent hours trying to solve this and I feel like I'm missing something obvious or something secret. And I don't really understand Wikidata but when I added/connected the image there the infoboxes for that article in other languages appropriately showed the Commons portrait.
Thanks for your help and removing the tag. ~ JasonCarswell (int:Talkpagelinktext) 14:12, 23 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Template:Ping regarding the files at monoskop.org - I don't know, but I don't see any information about the source or copyright for the images, and some of them appear to be scans from an unnamed source, so they will likely be deleted if you upload them to Commons. Any file uploaded here must have unambiguous authorship and copyright/licence info, or at the very least be unambiguously in the public domain (for example, anything published by the US government, or anything pre-1923 in the US, pre-1949 in Canada, etc.).
Regarding the template at en:Karlis Johansons, it looked correct, but it had some weird stray characters - I've fixed this. I'm guessing you copied it from another page that had formatting errors. Your best bet is to copy the blank template, in this case en:Template:Infobox artist, and go from there. I've added the signature parameter to the template, and shifted the image accordingly in the infobox on the artist page. Mindmatrix 14:52, 23 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I've had to revert the addition of the signature to the infobox. Mindmatrix 15:27, 23 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! It works! I had copied Picasso's which seems to work fine. Funny story about this article... 20 years ago I was an animator in NYC and I had a girlfriend from Montreal who was a huge math/pattern/tile/Escher nerd that introduced me to tensegrity among other ideas. She said there was a hidden history to Buckminster Fuller who popularized lots of great ideas like the geodesic dome and tensegrity but didn't invent them. She said there was a guy who'd first developed it and Bucky stole his thunder. So, 20 year later I've got this other project and look up tensegrity. (I'm so sick of the censorship and Western-centric fake/hidden history and hero worship that we're all fed like there's only one perspective, including to an extremely minute degree, Buckminster, who had human flaws like all people.) So I'd accidentally thought that Karlis was "the guy" I was curious about. During this process I learned that it was actually Kenneth Snelson I'd heard about and bonus discovery: Karlis pioneered tensile-structures before Snelson was even born, yet was barely mentioned on Wikipedia on the matter.
What's the EU copyright expiry? All of those images on Monoskop are from 1920-1922, except one reconstruction. That reconstruction image sourced to here: artsy.net/artwork/karl-ioganson-spatial-construction. Clearly that 2015 image of a reproduction in not valid for Commons. However it lead me to another image that I question: artsy.net/artwork/karl-ioganson-view-of-second-spring-exhibition-of-the-obmokhu-bolshaia-dimitrovska-moscow. The photo is 1921 but it seems to be part of ""Visionary Structures: From Johansons to Johansons" at the Centre for Fine Arts (BOZAR), Brussels (2015)" This is an important image, as are some of the "Spatial Constructions" on the Monoskop page because they prove and illustrate full tensegrity in solid structures, whereas the "Study In Balance" illustrated twice on the Wikipedia is actually "proto-tensegrity" as it is not solid, rather it's almost a "complete" tensegrity structure except for some absent constrictions and an extra interactive pull cord that alters the structure shape.
Also, I don't know if there's a difference between an illustration from 1921 and a recent photograph of an illustration from 1921. It's more about the content when it comes to 2D works, not about who captured it, correct? (Whereas an artful photo of a sculpture would be a different matter, I think.)
I hope I'm not bothering you too much. Just say so. Sometimes I worry about bothering people or taking liberties like just uploading it as best I can to let it all sort out. ~ JasonCarswell (int:Talkpagelinktext) 16:48, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Template:Ping Photos of illustrations are not original or novel works, so you only need to worry about the underlying work's copyright date. See Commons:2D copying. For copyright issues, take a look at some of the relevant links on Template:Tl, which covers a broad range of subjects and also has links to Commons forums where you can ask questions about these issues. For copyright term lengths, see Commons:Copyright rules by territory. I think that the photo at Visionary Structures: From Johansons to Johansons is OK for Commons, but you're better off asking at Commons:Village pump/Copyright. Mindmatrix 20:45, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
All great stuff. "Copying" in 2D - put in those words made real what I instinctively felt/perceived. I don't understand the Tl stuff at all. The copyrights by territory is great. Template:Tps I believe this page has accumulated too many templates for the servers to transclude properly. That Tl link was supposed to point to Template:Commons policies and guidelines. Mindmatrix, you might want to do some archiving.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 09:04, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Someone's always watching... Anyway, it's been a while, but I'm back with a question or few. I'm bothering you as you appear to be familiar with Category:Windsor, Ontario and how I gave it a good working over. There are now 25 more new images in that top(ish) category. Is that typical for 2 months? I'm guessing there are more within the sub-categories that might benefit from additional tweaking too. Is there a way to search and monitor these? The "Latest files" or "Gallery of new files" would let me search from Sept 1 2018 to today - BUT - for "IP address or username", not for "Windsor, Ontario". I have a few other Wikipedia projects I feel I must finish before addressing the Commons again, so it might be a while before I retackle this. So there's not hurry, but please ping me if you respond. Thanks again in advance. ~ JasonCarswell (int:Talkpagelinktext) 05:41, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Ping I've recently uploaded a few (perhaps 40 or so) Windsor-related files from Flickr, and have already categorized about half of them. Sometimes a top-level city category can go months without a new file, and other times receive hundreds in one day. I've also cleaned up a few other categories (for example, I've created subcategories for most sculptures in Category:Windsor Sculpture Park). To find new files in a category, or files that have recently been edited in that category, use "Related changes" listed under the "Tools" menu.
BTW: I have no attachment to Windsor (I've only spent four days of my life there); you'll find that on Commons I edit, clean up, and sort files for most Canadian communities. As an aside, in an earlier discussion you mentioned the difficulty in determining the borders of parks and other features on the waterfront. I've found Windsor MyParks, which has park shapefiles overlaid on a map of Windsor. Mindmatrix 14:31, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the info and app, though I didn't find it was very good, but maybe I need to try it again later with less traffic. If it works I may add it to the Wikivoyage Windsor page. ~ JasonCarswell (talk) 11:11, 17 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Some heritage registers[edit]

Hi, for exemple pour the Category:Stephan G. Stephansson House, the Alberta Register of Historic Places ID is 4665-0096 (https://hermis.alberta.ca/ARHP/Details.aspx?DeptID=1&ObjectID=4665-0096). For the Répertoire du patrimoine culturel du Québec the Category:Maison Blanche (Trois-Rivières) ID is 106371 (http://www.patrimoine-culturel.gouv.qc.ca/rpcq/detail.do?methode=consulter&id=106371&type=bien). One think I ask miself, if I we can enter some register in Template:Tl, like it was done for the National Regioster of Historic Places. --Fralambert (int:Talkpagelinktext) 19:06, 23 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I have some time to look at the code of Template:Tl and I created Template:Tl. You can look at the code if it's fine. --Fralambert (int:Talkpagelinktext) 19:36, 18 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Template:Ping My apologies about not having done this yet. I've looked at the following files you created:
Everything seems to be fine with those. Good work! Mindmatrix 21:19, 18 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Archiving this talk page[edit]

Template:Autotranslate Giving you another reminder because the transcluded templates in the last few posts are acting broken: there are now too many for the servers to handle. For example the section immediately above shows the title “File source is not properly indicated: File:Drinkwater Sakatchewan.jpg” when previewed by itself, but doesn’t work when the whole page is displayed.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:54, 14 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
