Why, oh why, did you revert this file? John Shirley hates this picture and someone grabbed it from our Picasa account. I uploaded a suitable replacement that is not so controversial. Please revert it back to the other photo. Please.

Hey there. On Commons you shouldn't upload an (almost) complete different photo to an existing file. But you are free to upload your new photo onto commons and give it a different file name.
Afterwards the old file can be replaced by the new file in the English article and others. And if you wish to delete the old file you could request that. --McZusatz (talk) 11:09, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

About broken files

Edited flickr files

Hi McZusatz, thanks for your editing uploads at File:Sounds of santorum technical file 1.ogv and at File:Sounds of santorum technical file 2.ogv. I really appreciated the way you isolated out the sounds part for the audio only. However, in order to keep uniformity with flickr, can you please upload those 2 files as new files, and then link back to those 2 above pages for the source? That way, we have a chain of where they came from at flickr, in the original format from the artist. Example: File:Capitol.jpg and File:Capitol1846.jpg.

Help! Where is my pic?

Hi McZusatz

Something strange happened to my upload here: description uploaded correctly but picture doesn't show. Your name came up as "new uploader". I tried to revert but the problem seems to be in my own (first) upload. Do you know if this can be adjusted or is it better to delete this file and upload again? Never seen this before, and I've done a lot of uploads.

Hi, here I am again with the same problem on this file. There's no hurry at all, when you click the image you get the big picture. But it doesn't look very nice!
If you upload with another filename, then something like "File:Cramer&Stoll-uitlandsche kapellen vol. 2- plate 146-.jpg" would be better, I like to keep the plates in in numerical order in the category. No big problem if this isn't possible.

The problem is caused by special characters in the file name. Please avoid using those: %, &, $ and ". {{Rename}}ing the file should help in your case. --McZusatz (talk) 12:38, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

On this photo you removed the Category:Mk 19 grenade launcher. The main HUMVEE has a Mk 19 grenade launcher in the photo. The caption incorrectly labels it as a .50 cal heavy machine gun. You can look at other Mk 19 photos and see how they are similar. All of that being, I think that the cat for the mk 19 should be put back.

Err, why did you upload a duplicate of my file and then deprecate mine? Not usually how it works. Just crop mine if you feel it is important, don't duplicate effort. Also, please use descriptive filenames when uploading images in the future. "PIA15776.png" doesn't tell readers anything who are looking at a glance. — Huntster (t @ c) 08:40, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

Your file is in the lossy jpeg format. Jpeg files should only be used as thumbnails if there's a png alternative around.
Concerning the file name: I just wanted to keep the original file name. You are free to tag my upload with {{Rename}}. --McZusatz (talk) 09:03, 26 May 2012 (UTC)
Lossiness can be an issue with JPG files, but if a JPG is uploaded direct from an original source and is not further modified by the uploader, converting to PNG is not recommended. This is especially true with this image, which is artificially enlarged and pixellated to begin with, and will not lose detail due to compression. Realistically, both of our files are identical, even under very high magnification, due to the methods the NASA folks use in creating image files. Since there was no original PNG file, just a TIF and JPG, there is no reason to convert.
As for the filename, I can understand wanting to preserve original titles, but Commons stresses using unique and comprehensive file names. This is why the Mediawiki system tries to automatically block uploads using filenames auto-generated by cameras. The PIA filenames are pretty much the same as camera auto-gen names. They may be unique, but they provide no information about what is going on. In the future, please upload with a unique name, and perhaps wrap the PIA id in parentheses at the end...it's still useful information. — Huntster (t @ c) 09:32, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

What I meant was, for NASA files its generally fine to use the JPG files they make, since the compression levels are so low as to be otherwise indistinguishable, even when I compared the two files at 500% mag. Own ist ein Standardwert - den bekommt man, wenn man sich durch Uploadforms "durchklickt". "selbst geschossen" oder ähnlich hat der User selsbt eingetippt. Das ist mE sehr viel mehr glaubwürdig (bzw. annehmbar, dass er auch überhaupt selbst das meint, was dasteht), als bei {{Own}}, dessen Bedeutung der User vllt. gar nicht versteht. When requesting duplicates ...

When nominating duplicates, would you be so kind to leave any existing file information in place and simply add the {{duplicate}} template, rather than replacing the whole text with the template. Nochmal hallo, könnte man die Umbenennung wieder rückgängig machen? Derjenige, der es auf Commons übertragen hat, ist auch aus der als:WP und möchte gern, dass der Name so bleibt wie er war. Ich muss zugeben, dass ich sooo tief nicht darüber nachgedacht habe, z.B. dass es noch viele andere solcher Dateinamen gibt. Insofern möchte ich dem Wunsch des Benutzers entsprechen. EDGE: 220
UMTS: 384
HSDPA: 14400 (großflächig)

Da GPRS und EDGE Erweiterungen des Mobilfunkstandarts GSM (2G) sind bzw.
HSDPA eine Erweiterung des Mobilfunkstandarts UMTS (3G) wäre auch folgende Beschreibung sinnvoll:
"Vergleich der maximal erreichbaren Bitraten bei verschiedenen Mobilfunkstandards und deren Erweiterungen."

Hallo, könntest Du bitte Verschieben & Ersetzen nutzen, um die Dateibenutzungen, wie die von File:TRON 9-934C.png automatisch durch den CommonsDelinker erneuern zu lassen (wenn es geht, wenn es wie in diesem Fall wohl nicht funktioniert, weil das Skript meint schlauer zu sein, müsste man wohl manuell eine Zeile schreiben … oder ich grase einfach mal mit einem Script Deine Verschiebungen ab? — Das sollte auch möglich sein. Ja, das Problem ist, dass das Script ".jpg" anhängt. Also einfach normal verschieben, jemand muss sowieso Dein move-log abarbeiten und ob es nun 50 oder 1000 Dateien sind, ist dann auch nicht mehr wichtig. Videos mit Reparaturbedarf

Hallo McZusatz, du hast dich ja dankenswerterweise in letzter Zeit auch etwas der Videobearbeitung angenommen. Wenn du Zeit und Lust hast, da gäbe es noch 3 neuere Fälle: File:RiceTerrace.theora.ogv, File:Cookstove.theora.ogv und File:Farming.theora.ogv. Die Quelle ist wohl eine HDV-Kamera (1440x1080), die Aspektratio der Videos sollte also 16:9 sein. Ohne Umcodieren des Videoteils geht da wohl nichts (--aspect 16:9), und für mein Schmalspur-DSL sind die Dateien einfach zu groß.. Gruß, --Pristurus (talk) 16:08, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

Die Frage habe ich natürlich nicht ganz ohne Hintergedanken gestellt... User:Venca24 hat 6 Videos hochgeladen (z.B. File:Protestní_pochod_proti_ACTA_České_Budějovice_11.2.2012_(1).ogv), bei denen die AR nicht stimmt. Da ich das benutze Programm Pitivi nicht kenne, weiss ich da nicht so recht, wie man damit am einfachsten zu einer 720x576 anamorphen Kodierung kommt. Vielleicht kannst du dazu etwas beitragen? Thanks für die Anmerkung dort! Zu File:1993-06-08-Jeep-Safari-bei-Moab-(Utah) 320x240.ogg: da wählt man nach dem Croppen am besten gleich ein 16/9 Format (z.B. 352x198), dann verschwinden auch die unnötigen Trauerränder und die AR sollte (nahezu) stimmen. Ursprünglich lag das Material wohl ehe so vor, mit C-VHS konnte man ja nur 4:3 oder 16:9 aufnehmen. Gruß, --Pristurus (talk) 16:31, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
Schwarze Ränder sind eig. auch nicht meine Freunde, aber die Auflösung von 320*240 war u.a. im Dateinamen vorgegeben. Da waren die Ränder das kleinere Übel. --McZusatz (talk) 16:51, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
Gegen Schwarzrand sprechen ja nicht nur optische Gründe: die Datei wird größer, es müssen also auch mehr Daten zum Zuschauer geschickt werden, ohne dass zusätzliche Information dort ankommt. Aber das ist bei einem kleinen Format noch verkraftbar. Filename: man könnte den Namensteil natürlich dann commons-konform anpassen, da er dann ja offensichtlich auch falsch wäre ("Correct misleading names into accurate ones"). You want to know how to export the audio into a file for uploading to wikimedia commons?

Hi, on my picture File:Animal cell cycle.svg, you seem to have messed up the featured picture template with the renaming. The "considered" link should link to Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Cell Cycle—Animal Cell.svg. The template seems to autogenerate the link, which now points to the wrong page. It is possible to delete pictures which were recently uploaded, not in use and were requested to delete by the author. In this case the image is already some months on the wiki servers. You can't just delete your published pictures if you feel to do so. It would be great if you provided any reasons (other than your personal wish) on the deletion's discussion. Rotating my .ogg files

Hi, McZusatz
Thank you for the rotation you made on my .ogg files. For me, it is a real problem. Even if I rotate the video on my camera, it is not OK on the PC. I have yet about 6 videos to upload with need of rotation.
Another question. I uploaded 2 videos : File:Demolition of coal power plant Vaires D20101211 1 of 2.ogg and File:Demolition of coal power plant Vaires D20101211 2 of 2.ogg. First of all you should rotate these files directly after copying them from your cam. Recoding them to .ogv and then rotate them makes them pixelized and blurry. For better support I should know what your cameras output container and codec is ... TiA --McZusatz (talk) 21:51, 19 January 2012 (UTC)

Help:Converting video

The bit rate depends on the frame size. (On small frames (360*240) you wont be able to force it to 10kbps.) Many of the transcoders available use quality settings from 0 to 10 or from 0 to 100 whereas the best quality should be chosen. Yes, McZusatz is right. The bit rates for optimum quality is different for each source file. A video with a lot of scenes and/or many fine structures needs a higher value than a unique black sequence. Therefore quality settings exist. This settings try to produce an equal quality independent of the compressibility of the source file and choose automatic an appropriate bit rate. For uploading self produced videos I would (in the moment) strongly advise to use vp8/webm. This codec results in a better video quality (for the same bit rate) than theora can do. --Pristurus (talk) 22:05, 22 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi McZusatz, I appreciate all the work you are putting into fixing the files in Category:Video repair needed, a good number of which had been put there by me when checking the work of the Open Access Media Importer. I am interested in lending a hand with such repairs but don't really know what to do with the broken files - how do you diagnose the problem, and what remedies are at hand?
