File:Opera 9 address bar when at Wikipedia.png

Regarding your tagging of the File:Opera 9 address bar when at Wikipedia.png for speedy deletion, which was originally in the Main Wiki; Somebody replaced the legitimate license with the tag "Template:Boobies!" before it was transferred to the commons. I fixed it on Wikipedia, and I tried to fix it here too. ----DanTD (talk) 14:10, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

Cleanup

Hi, cleanup like this isn't improving the page. The author was properly listed, so putting her in the source line with another name is redundant and confusing, the source is not own work when I uploaded the image via transfer (and the log is more than sufficient to dismiss any confusioj), and adding parameters to the Cc-zero template is totally useless (by virtue of the license, but it's even useless with cc licenses if the author is properly attributed in the author line, which is all the license requires). Also, the date line should include when the image was created, but you replaced it with when the image was uploaded - the athor noted 2011 as the date and we have no more specific info, so why the change? Best wishes Hekerui (talk) 11:24, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

The source is {{own}}, not Transferred from en.wikipedia. The latter information is already contained in the original upload log. --Leyo 12:16, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

The source is not {{own}}, because I am the uploader on Commons, and the original uploader is linked and made clear in the log. The Move-to-commons assistant applies this use, too. My question is simple, why edit a page that is perfectly fine to begin with? Hekerui (talk) 12:31, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

No. Source corresponds to Author. Who is the uploader to Commons is unimportant in that sense. --Leyo 13:13, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

Yes, it is unimportant, which is why marking it own work when I uploaded it is confusing. The author line linking to an author on en.wp is enough, no? Was just trying to tell Magog about the futility of doing unneeded edits... Hekerui (talk) 21:34, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

I changed it to how it should look like IMO. The fact, that the file has first been uploaded to en.wikipedia can be seen in the original upload log. But the information that matters from a legal point of view is that it is an own work by the author given (and linked) there. --Leyo 22:41, 11 June 2011 (UTC)
The purpose of the edit was primarily internationalization as well as clarity. To explain:
  • I internationalized original upload log, making it easiest for non-English readers to understand.
  • I wanted to reinclude the bit that was in the original description about "I ~~~ created this work entirely by myself" and "{{self}} " because often, when transferring to Commons, people will incorrectly state the uploader as the author, when the original never explicitly stated who the author of the image was (sadly, noobs have a tendency to upload images and slap any old license on them; this problem was more egregious in the old days before the upload screen was improved).
  • I chose to convert to the own template in order to best internationalize it. Commons doesn't have an international template for the words "I created this entirely by myself," and this is the best substitute. That's why the author's name was in parentheses afterwards -to distinguish her from you, the reuploader. Perhaps I should instead have modified the own template to allow for a parameter for an alternate author, e.g., own work by w:User:Example.
  • By reinstating the two templates, I was attempting to stay the most faithful to the appearance of the page when originally uploaded on en.wp. I would not have added them back in if they weren't on the original.
In any case, this frankly wasn't an important issue, at least IMO. But I hope this helps us to gain a mutual understanding. If you think I'm still missing the point, let me know. Magog the Ogre (talk) 23:02, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

I don't know why you reverted my duplicate mark on that file, it's completely identical to this one. After marking as duplicate I've done some colour correction in the newer file, but the older one is still a "scalled down duplicate" and should be deleted. If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Walmart footprint png

Your map on the Walmart page has the caption "Map of current Wal-Mart stores in the U.S." Someone changed it to "Map of current[when?] Wal-Mart stores in the U.S." What was the date of the information you used to create this map. Since the Walmart page is locked all we can do is tell them the date and hopefully someone with a key to that page will rewrite the caption. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Psion20 (talk • contribs) 19:46, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

Obra derivada?

Gracias.--Inri (talk) 16:06, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

Saludos. Magog the Ogre (talk) 16:22, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

Gracias nuevamente.--Inri (talk) 16:56, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

User talk:dorkinglad 20:00, 14 July 2011 (UTC) Dear Magog - I do hope you found the article to be of interest to you. The photograph was taken around 1860 and was first published around 1900 in a biography of P B Shelley. The original is in the family archive at the Horsham Museum. Thanks for pointing out the need for a source. may I ask how I explain family photographs such as the Thomas Medwin one to which you are objecting kind regards Greg — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dorkinglad (talk • contribs) 17:49, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

You can mark the image as "this is a family photograph, and I personally scanned it." I would also recommend putting that information regarding when the photograph was taken and how it was first published, as it is relevant to the public domain status of the image. You might want to also include, if known, the name of the photographer and the date of death of that photographer (again, if known). Magog the Ogre (talk) 17:53, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

About File:Igino Sderci with Leandro Bisiach 1919.jpg

Hello. There are some problems with this file. Surely it's PD in Italy because the photo was taken more than 20 years ago (Sderci, pictured in the photo, died in 1983). I put this on Commons taking it from w:en:File:Igino Sderci with Leandro Bisiach 1919.jpg. I copied it on Commons because it would be PD (according to the uploader, the photo was taken in 1919 and the author died in 1932, but the source is not verifiable, the uploader is not active by a couple of months and i have no more informations about the photo). Is the PD-Italy enough to maintain the file on Commons? Or should I copy it on it.wikipedia (in the case more informations are not provided)? --Tino 032 (talk) 10:11, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

I don't know it.wikipedia's policies. I tagged it because it's impossible to verify any of this information without a source (not to mention it may have first been published in a non-Italian publication, for example, which would change Commons' policy on the issue). Magog the Ogre (talk) 17:22, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

Ok. Thanks for the help. --Tino 032 (talk) 21:38, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

Botmovecheck

Hi Magog the Ogre, I dislike your cleanup here. :-) Therefore. The attribution you have inserted was never stated by the author. He has not defined it and it could be assumed that he just wants his name. Adding an explicit attribution is wrong - I think. Also in my understanding the source you have inserted in the nfiormation template is not really the source. The source is there to provide verificability and so on. Not possible if it is only "own work". In addition "selbst fotografiert" does say much, much more than Own work. Please do not remove such info. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 15:53, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

For the first one, please refer to the discussion at User talk:Magog the Ogre/Archive 2#Cleanup, and to a lesser extent point #3 by Leyo at User talk:Magog the Ogre/cleanup.js. For the second one, I don't know why you removed the author parameter. If you have further issues, let me know. Magog the Ogre (talk) 02:03, 4 July 2011 (UTC)
And do you truly think that "Selbst Fotografiert" is that much more informative than "Eigenes Werk"? If so, would you know of a way to internationalize that could get around this problem? Magog the Ogre (talk) 12:26, 4 July 2011 (UTC)

(did not have the time to read your links ...) Selbst fotografiert is stronger and probably more clear to the uploader. If we have "selbst fotografiert" I do trust it more than {{own}. And with selbst fotografiert it is clear that if there is anything depicted (a painting for example) then the selbst fotografiert does not apply to it - like {{own} would do (maybe).

A way to internationalize: well, {{Self photographed}} or similar. ;-) Or just the way I corrected it. This way the information is not lost - at least for German speakers. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 01:29, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

OK, I changed the script to retain the original text: see for example [2]. Magog the Ogre (talk) 07:52, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

Good - but it is the source - not a "caption". --Saibo (Δ) 14:39, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

That was the closest internationalized template I could get to original text. Would you like to create {{Original text}} with me? We'd already be off to a good start: together we could add English, German, Spanish, and frankly I can figure it out in Catalan, Galician, and Portugese (given their proximity to Spanish, and the existing templates). Or would you prefer a different template? Be my guest and create it. I have a really big thing about keeping everything internationalized, as you can see. Magog the Ogre (talk) 14:46, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

Yep having "original text" i18nd would be good (isn't it roughly equal in all languages anyway? ;-) ). But in addition we could make {{Self photographed}} (or is this bad English?). I would really like to avoid {{Own photo}} because people will confuse it with "having the photo" / "Owning the photo" in the sense of owning the paper photograph / jpg file on "own" computer.

I will help - but not today: need to get to bed.. and have other things to do. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 22:41, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

This discussion might be continued on Template talk:Own#Own photo etc.. --Leyo 06:56, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
What about the idea of introducing a parameter? {{own|photo}} in analogy to {{unknown|author}}? --Leyo 07:40, 21 July 2011 (UTC)
I was thinking that myself, but I'm a) too inexperienced in the ways of commons and translations, b) not an admin so I can't edit protected pages, and c) too lazy (just being honest and forthright). Magog the Ogre (talk) 16:36, 21 July 2011 (UTC)
I made the proposal at Template talk:Own#Own photo etc. --Leyo 23:43, 22 July 2011 (UTC)

File:Karamlak river.jpg

Dear Sir, I got the file from the English Wikipedia. I dont understand what's wrong. "Commons" is really incompehensible for me. Yours sincerely, --Forstbirdo (talk) 14:02, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

Commons is the name of the project you're on - it's a repository of files accessible to all Wikimedia projects (including Wikipedia). In this case, the file didn't have enough information on English Wikipedia or on commons to identify its source. Magog the Ogre (talk) 20:05, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

I've declined your speedy deletion request, as I don't think that's a good reason to speedily bring an admin to the page. Thanks, Σ (talk) 06:51, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Yes. What were to happen if someone didn't read reasoning that and just deleted the whole thing. That would be bad. Next time, do what I do, go onto the IRC and bug someone with the right tools until they do what you want them to. Sven Manguard (talk) 06:54, 28 July 2011 (UTC)
Um, if someone didn't read the reasoning on that page, that would unquestionably be a collosal adminship failure. Besides, I've had people do it for me before. And I made the request via speedy deletion because it's the least obnoxious of all alternatives (e.g., posting at the village pump). Magog the Ogre (talk) 06:59, 28 July 2011 (UTC)
I'd recommend finding a pliable admin and leaving the message on their talk page then. You say "unquestionably be a collosal adminship failure", I say "common occurrence". All sorts of stuff both here and on en.wiki disappears because people don't slow down to look closely. Sven Manguard (talk) 03:49, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

If you click on the image, and read the caption on the bottom, it clearly states that the image cannot be used for certain commercial purposes. This is not, in fact, truly in the public domain (the creator of the image is sort of misusing the term). Commons licensing requires the image be free for all commercial purposes. Cleaning module for AjaxMassDelete

Hello, would it be difficult to write a small cross-browser-compatible clean-up module. I see you wrote User:Magog the Ogre/cleanup.js, which seems to be a very nice and useful script.

My disires are:

  • Fast interpretation (mot more than 1/50 s on 2 GHz processor)
  • Fast execusion (on a "default file page" not more than 1/10 s on 2 GHz processor)
  • Compact
  • Easy to integrate (e.g. output = function Cleanup (input) )
  • Resolves the most common issues on file-description pages

Am I crazy? No. I would be happy to integrate it in User:Rillke/AjaxMassDelete.js. It should be used when inserting OTRS permission or performing a custom replace with this script.

I ask you since you do a lot of clean up and are very experienced with regexpr. Thank you -- RE rillke questions? 13:53, 6 August 2011 (UTC)

Ooh, well actually it might be difficult. I'll address each issue:
  • The script I've written already causes a crash on Internet Explorer (is there a way to report bugs to MS?!).
  • I don't know the interpretation speed
  • The execution is indeed fast, at least on my machine using Chrome
  • You will have to decide for yourself if the code is compact; it doesn't seem particularly compact as is
  • A little bit of rewrite and it would be easy to integrate
  • I believe the code resolves most commons issues on file description pages. However, as it's currently written, it definitely requires the user to review the changes before submission - i.e., it's far from perfect and occasionally makes mistakes. This could probably be fixed - I could have one function with safe changes, and another function with experimental or unsafe changes.
Let me know what you think. Magog the Ogre (talk) 20:32, 6 August 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for being open to this project. My script is in beta-state, too so we have something in common :) . I'd like only to fix the most common issues and it must be usable without to check each edit the script performs and of course it should not crash IE (script could throw errors but the browser should remain untouched).

"but we need to know..."

You've given enough source now! We just needed to know where you got the image so we can make sure you're correct about the licensing information. While it would be nice if we could just trust you, even good-faith editors make mistakes sometimes. Keep in mind that the date of publication is what's important, not creation, so even some very old images aren't free. In this case, what we needed was Thanks. Magog the Ogre (talk) 16:56, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

I will do a boot into Windows 7 (rather than using my VirtualBox version of XP) soon to see if it's still an issue on the newest versions of IE; developers sometimes don't like to fix something on older versions. Magog the Ogre (talk) 18:27, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Do we have a tag that we can use to split image history in English Wikipedia? {{Split}} does that for Commons but in En wiki, it looks like the template is only applicable for articles --Sreejith K (talk) 07:02, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

No problem. Regards Hekerui (talk) 22:16, 30 October 2011 (UTC)

I have already said in the discussion on the suppression of this page that I didn't mind one or the other version (File:LRCwithNightstarTest-Ottawa (1).jpg) of this photo. However, I wonder why my import of 2007 should be eliminated by an import of 2011 of the same image just because that image has a better description. Isn't it the oldest that should be kept and the info transferred to it?

Pierre cb (talk) 13:06, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

I would absolutely agree with Pierre. Sometimes the older version is deleted if the newer one is used by more projects and/or is much better titled, but was that the case here? --Skeezix1000 (talk) 13:09, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

The older version is used by 3 wiki while the newer is only used in 1. On top of that the newer version has a funny title with (1) because it is a double of the older. Pierre cb (talk) 14:29, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

In that case, I always defer to the one that was uploaded first. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 16:51, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
Mackensen suggested in his DR that the older version was uploaded without proper licenses. Is that the case? --Skeezix1000 (talk) 16:56, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

Well,it is too late for this now that the file has been deleted, but I don't see what he meant by that. I've used the GFDL license, as in Englsih, with the author attribution. DR just did not take the time to change to read or understand the description, which was done before the new format, otherwise he would just have had to add any missing data. Pierre cb (talk) 22:55, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

There were two issues with the file: the first is that you uploaded a scaled down version of the file (800px vs. 1024 px). The second is that the latter file had more complete (bot-created) information about the original upload (which I just deleted at English Wikipedia, so the information needed to be complete). If an administrator deletes a file locally in favor of a different version, they CommonsDelinker should update the links on the local projects. Magog the Ogre (talk) 00:51, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

FYI, I changed the FOP tag on the above image - the memorial is located in France, not the UK (though it is a British memorial). Kelly (talk) 16:26, 6 November 2011 (UTC)

My research indicates the authorship belongs to the entire 38th division; which would put the item into the public domain because it is corporate authorship. Am I wrong? Unfortunately, I don't have time to look into this any further. Magog the Ogre (talk) 23:31, 6 November 2011 (UTC)

clean up script

Hello, I just let you know that I am still highly interested in a module of most common replacements, which can run unattended (bot-like). This, built in all content-changing scripts, which we have lots of (User:ZooFari/licensereviewer.js, MediaWiki:Gadget-PermissionOTRS.js, MediaWiki:VisualFileChange.js, MediaWiki:Gadget-Cat-a-lot.js, MediaWiki:Gadget-HotCat.js) would be great. I am sorry for my intransigence. Just ignore it if your time is too limited. Thank you. -- RE rillke questions? 11:09, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

OK; User:Magog the Ogre/cleanup.js already has the {{Own}} functionality forked into its own function; I did it a while ago, although I see I forgot to document it properly. The function will add either {{Own}} or {{Self-photographed}}; is that what you're looking for? Magog the Ogre (talk) 22:52, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

I was looking for something like SchlurcherBot (talk · contribs) does. Internationalization of dates and headings, simply common mistakes occurring and a bit clean-up for transferred files, if necessary, yes. But it must be save. -- RE rillke questions? 23:11, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

That should be pretty simple; the question is what all you want included, and how you want it done. Do you want a different function for each internationalization piece? This sounds like a good idea in theory but in practice it would mean having to parse and reparse the comments and nowiki tags (which the script has to remove in order maintain the integrity of the data inside those). Magog the Ogre (talk) 11:22, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
It's enough if it is done in one function but you are free in this case (internals aren't important). I just want an interface, which could look like:
pageText = cleanUp(pageText);
Let's not overcomplicate it. And I have already a nice name for it: OgreClean™. I think it will be a bestseller ;-) Think of the thousands of edit summaries: License-review passed and auto-cleanup using OgreClean™, Cat-a-lot: Moving from Category:a to Category:b and auto-cleanup using OgreClean™, ....

List of inclusions

Let's see what could be of general use:

  • Heading internationalization
  • Date internationalization
  • cleaning up common terms like 'own work' → '{{Own work}}; 'self made' → '?'; permission=see below → permission= and so on
  • introducing template {{Information}} if not present

Do you have further suggestions? Are they all considered save? Which replacements do you often experience? Thank you for helping. This will enormous ease the daily tasks and reduces the edit-count and also makes them looking better. -- RE rillke questions? 21:43, 6 November 2011 (UTC)

I think we also should add the following:
  • A new template for User:X at [proj] which could also be used by templates like {{PD-user-w}}.
  • A new template for The original description page is/was [[link] here].(?: All following user names refer to [proj].)?
  • A new template for Transferred from [proj] (?:by [user])?
  • Perhaps a new template for (Original text: [text]) (I've been using {{Original caption}}, which is awkward).
  • Perhaps a new template for the original upload log, which can internationalize the date, time, dimensions, bytes, and the word bytes itself. There are a number of languages that don't use western numerals.
The text needn't fit perfectly (some bots use other language, but it could be adapted to the templates). Magog the Ogre (talk) 04:07, 9 November 2011 (UTC)

Original upload log

Hallo Magog the Ogre! Thank you for your help with adding some missing information on a picture I uploaded from en.Wikipedia ([4]). I am still a bit new here but I will remember to do that in the future. Jopparn (talk) 18:33, 15 November 2011 (UTC)

You're welcome! The easiest way is to let the bot transfer it for you (bot link: [5]). Also, if you would rather do it the old way, you can use my small script to create the original upload information (link: [6]). Magog the Ogre (talk) 18:39, 15 November 2011 (UTC)

Hi Magog, hope you're well. A user has requested the undeletion of File:SA-Army-badge.png on my talk page at User_talk:Fastily#Commons:Deletion_requests.2FFile:SA-Army-badge.png. It is automatically generated by the script Commons uses for proposing deletion. Can't stop it; sorry. Magog the Ogre (talk) 00:49, 24 November 2011 (UTC)
Info The script assumes, if you are not just a reverter (in your case, you cropped the image), that you would possibly disagree with its deletion since you invested time in improving it. Just revert those edits. -- RE rillke questions? 17:47, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

Old version filemover

Hi Magog the Ogre. I tried your Old version filemover tool. It works great and is very helpful. In the case of File:RaperswilenKirche.JPG however, I got the message “Versions of Commons image not found in the de.wikipedia image”. For some reason, the version on Commons just transferred is not the same as the most recent version on de.wikipedia. --Leyo 17:38, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

That's actually a bug in the MW software, which is reporting the two different images at de.wp have the same hash; see [7]. This is a known bug that occurs rarely with some older images. IIRC, if you purge the page, it may fix it. You can get around this problem by overriding the defaults or (actually in this case) just choosing the defaults and uploading them as such anyway. Magog the Ogre (talk) 01:56, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the answer. Purging helped indeed. --Leyo 08:49, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

Meh, I've removed it. Don't need it anymore. Magog the Ogre (talk) 03:48, 27 November 2011 (UTC)
I hope you will re-enable the tool (at least for seleted Wikipedias). It is very handy for such cases. --Leyo 08:59, 28 November 2011 (UTC)
OK I put it back up then. Magog the Ogre (talk) 23:07, 28 November 2011 (UTC)
Thanks a lot! --Leyo 08:40, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

If you are afraid of the tool being misused, what about creating a positive list of users who are allowed to use it? By putting the list at User:OgreBot/oldver.js or similar also Commons admins could add trusted users. --Leyo 08:36, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

Some files I want to bring here

Usuing the same licensing and reasons for "PD"ness as used for File:Coat of arms of the Western Cape.svg, I don't supposed you would have any objections to my brining the following other South African provincial CoAs to Commons, would you? They're all taken from official PDF documents, as is the CoA of Western Cape. [9], [10], [11], [12], [13] and [14] Fry1989 eh? 04:02, 27 November 2011 (UTC)

I'm sorry I don't have time to respond I will respond to you eventually, not too long. Magog the Ogre (talk) 23:08, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

Very well, you may also wish to view new information on the Commons:Deletion requests/File:Seal of the President of Ireland.png, when you have time. Fry1989 eh? 23:36, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

My reading of the situation is that they all look OK, because they were taken directly from the official document. I wouldn't nominate it for deletion unless something else should give evidence it's non-free (i.e., in the future there is a separate delete decision on a similar case, the South African government sends us a DMCA takedown, etc.). I would go ahead and upload it in your shoes. Magog the Ogre (talk) 22:18, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
I will get to them soon, however I will be on vacation from the 12th of December to the 9th of January, so I might not get to them all, there are a few details I have to find out with each one. Fry1989 eh? 23:06, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

I think the user ist on vacation (?) and might not see the request. The file was moved from the German Wikipedia, so I do not understand why you say it has no proper licence. The file was deleted in the German Wikipedia in the meantime, but it was transferred with the same licence it had there or the admins on German Wikipedia wouldn't have deleted the old file. Regards, --Stanzilla (talk) 21:52, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

This is not that difficult. The source at de.wp clearly stated a different author than the uploader. We need permission for the file. Admins are fallable as well. Magog the Ogre (talk) 02:23, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

You don't have to be the author to transfer a file. Or do I misunderstand you?--Stanzilla (talk) 10:45, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

I'm sorry, it was inappropriate of me to snap at you (I have my reasons, but they're excuses not reasons). No, I wasn't stating that the problem was with your upload; I was stating that the original uploader at French Wikipedia stated who the author was, but that the author wasn't him (or her). When that is the case, for legal and ethical reasons, policy dictates we need something in writing from the releasing party (or something written on their website) to verify that the license is correct. Magog the Ogre (talk) 05:20, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

Ah okay. I didn't even notice you snapped at me. What confuses me, is that the image is transferred from German Wikipedia, not French Wikipedia. And I didn't transfer it, I am not Rauenstein. If there's still a problem, I could ask on German Wikipedia (with a link to this discussion) to undelete the file there.--Stanzilla (talk) 10:13, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

What happened is this: it was uploaded to French Wikipedia originally, then uploaded to German, then to Commons from German Wikipedia. It was also uploaded at English Wikipedia. In essence: too many users uploading things to their respective Wikipedias when Commons would have been best. Magog the Ogre (talk) 10:15, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

Oh okay, so if the French upload is the first one, this one gets deleted and we transfer the French upload?--Stanzilla (talk) 10:31, 13 December 2011 (UTC) On the French page they use this picture though.--Stanzilla (talk) 10:34, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

No. The reason there was a problem has only to do with the fact I didn't think the uploader at French Wikipedia was the author. S/he never stated as much, and actually seemed to indicate otherwise; but upon further inspection, we realized s/he was the author, and just hadn't filled out the upload information as well as s/he probably should have. Magog the Ogre (talk) 10:37, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

Question

Hi,

I just upload some images like File:Radar-faisceau zh.svg and was looking at their use when I found that your bot has some of them in User:OgreBot/Watercraft. I was just curious to know the rationale about this image placed in that list of boats?

Pierre cb (talk) 17:00, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

That question is answered in the thread about one inch above this one. Magog the Ogre (talk) 17:04, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
If you're wondering about the specifics, it's File:Radar-faisceau zh.svg -> Category:Radar principles -> Category:Radars -> Category:Radio navigation -> Category:Navigation systems -> Category:Navigational equipment -> Category:Ship parts -> Category:Watercraft parts -> Category:Watercraft. Magog the Ogre (talk) 17:11, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. With such a large scope I understand why the bot is bound to find funny relations. Pierre cb (talk) 19:37, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

Military insignia copyright

Hello, you have repeatedly said that I violated the copyright on my talk page, but these images are military insignia and do not have copyright, so I do not see where the concern. --Loick7695 (talk) 14:40, 17 December 2011 (UTC)

That's not usually correct. Military and government insignia are free in most Soviet countries, and usually in the US as well. But that is not the case with many governments, who reserve the copyrights on them. Also, please note that even if the definition of a coat of arms is public domain, a given drawing of it might not be (see Commons:Coats of arms). Does that clear it up? Do you have an opinion about the Google Chrome logo? It's on your "dubious PD-textlogo" page and is also being discussed in a deletion request where some people suggest that it may be simple enough, but I think it might be too complex. It's also on English Wikipedia with {{NowCommons}} and some fair use templates, so it might cause you trouble when deciding whether it should be removed from there or not or whether it should stay as fair use. --Stefan4 (talk) 00:15, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

I hate talking about PD-textlogo issues on Commons unless it's obvious in either direction. If I make the wrong decision and delete an image locally, then it will be deleted on Commons, and I should have kept it fair use. If I go the other way and nominate an image for deletion, then a cadre of determined editors will tell me I don't know what I'm talking about. So I think I'll sit this one out. Magog the Ogre (talk) 01:31, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
I understand. It must be very hard to decide what to do when a logo has been moved to Commons. --Stefan4 (talk) 12:14, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
