Geography of the bot

I noticed that some of the images I'd just uploaded were listed as being in User:Aconcagua/Alaska new/2014 July 21-31 which seemed kind of odd. So I went to look and eventually ended up at User:OgreBot/gallery. I looked through the page and found the listing for "User:Aconcagua/Alaska new" but I couldn't find a listing for Category:Nunavut. So I was curious as too why the bot was adding images from Nunavut, and Toronto to a page for Alaskan images? Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather Talk 04:08, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

@CambridgeBayWeather:: I've made some modifications to User:OgreBot/gallery to mostly remedy the problem. I've also asked the gallery owner to try to be vigilant. Thanks. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:31, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

Category Cleanup Tool not working

Hi Magog. Lately I've been trying to apply the Category Cleanup Tool to Category:Pages using Information template with incorrect parameter several times, but without any success (both with and without the subcategory). Despite of the notice “Success. The job has been queued.” OgreBot does not do anything. Could you please take a look? --Leyo 21:39, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

@Leyo: try it again now. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 21:42, 27 July 2014 (UTC)
That was quick. It works now, thank you. --Leyo 21:55, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

CleanUp bot for categories

Hi Magog the Ogre. Is there a chance that you could run your cleanup bot over the subcategory pages of Category:Language templates with no text displayed? The standard script used for file pages may do the job. --Leyo 00:21, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

No, I'm sorry; the bot is not built for that. You might consider auto wiki browser. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:00, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
@Leyo: Also, as you may have noticed, the script has a bug wherein it doesn't work properly if you choose "no subcategories." Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:43, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Copy to Wikimedia Commons

Hello. There are more than 18 thousand files for transfer to Commons here. Please move these files by the bot. Thanks --ديفيد عادل وهبة خليل 2 (talk) 16:29, 2 August 2014 (UTC)

Although it would be very satisfying to see such a large number of files transferred quickly, I would urge caution because I do not belive that Sfan00 IMG takes enough care when tagging these files. Just today, I have found a number of Wikipedia files with dubious copyright statuses, all tagged by the same user. Examples include en:File:Dr. H.S. Chhabra.jpg (which has been around on the internet since 2012 but only uploaded to Wikipedia on 1 August 2014), en:File:Image of Leslie Benzies.jpg (a Flickr CC-BY-NC-SA-2.0 image but uploaded to Wikipedia with CC-BY-SA-3.0), en:File:23rd National Excellence Award.jpg and en:File:23rd National Excellence Award Pix 2.jpg and en:File:23rd National Excellence Award Pix 3.jpg (all three copied from this website without any evidence of correct licensing), en:File:Paostadium.jpg (copied from the internet but claimed as own work from the uploaders PC), en:File:Paonewstadium.jpg (same as the previous file), en:File:Željko Savić.jpg (copied from the subjects own website but no evidence of permission). All of these files were tagged by Sfan00 on 1 August, in rapid succession within ten minutes. Just over a week ago, they tagged a file for transfer to Commons within three minutes of it being uploaded yet it turned out to be a copyvio. When I highlighted this, their resposnse was less than convincing. They "assume good faith", whereas I would rather they exercise caution. I accept that we should double check file tagged by bots but it is concerning when we have to double check files tagged by humans. Green Giant (talk) 15:59, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
So you would rather I took the rather more precautionary stance Stefan4 takes? I can agree with that. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 17:46, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
I would much rather transfer files to Commons with the confidence that you have checked them thoroughly because I don't particularly enjoy reversing Copy-to-Commons tags on unfree files. Certainly I don't expect your tagging to be 100% correct but 8 unfree files in 10 minutes is enough to cause concern. Maybe not as precautionary as Stefan but just a bit more careful. Cheers. Green Giant (talk) 18:13, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
OK. You've just asked me to be suspicious ( which in some cases means assuming bad faith). Great! :) Sfan00 IMG (talk) 18:56, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
If it helps, then yeah I'm asking you to be suspicious of all files at Wikipedia when you are thinking of tagging them for Commons. If we assumed good faith with all uploads, Commons would be filled to the brim with copyvios. These poor unloved admins already delete 10-15,000 files every week, so we should try to help them in anyway we can. I always look for triggers that would raise suspicion e.g. any file from Flickr definitely needs its license to be compared with the source because sometimes uploaders don't pay attention to the fact that not all Flickr files are suitable for Commons. This is why we have that other group of poor unloved people - the license reviewers, but it doesn't mean the rest of us can't help. Before you leave this page thinking User:Green Giant really must be an ogre, please note that I do appreciate the majority of your tagging because I've transferred plenty of files from your category. Green Giant (talk) 19:25, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
@ديفيد عادل وهبة خليل 2: I tend to agree with Green Giant. I prefer the exercise of caution before transferring image. For that reason, I will not move them all to Commons by bot. If you think you have found a large group that are safe to transfer (e.g., all uploads by a certain user), I suggest contacting User:MGA73, who has performed such transfers in the past. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:32, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

whether, how will the transfer of files (with their large number)? --ديفيد عادل وهبة خليل 2 (talk) 06:55, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

By hand, just like we've always done. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:08, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

Yes I have moved a lot of files in the past. At the moment I'm not copying files to Commons because 1) the bot I used do not work at the moment and 2) I've been busy doing other things.

It is important to be careful not to move or tag to many files that is not okay for Commons (a few mistakes are ok - we are all human). Sometimes we find a user that have uploadet a serie of xxx photos of flowers or something "safe" then it is easy to move them all to Commons (once the bot works). The problem is files that is not own work or that is derivative works. So please be careful with those. --MGA73 (talk) 14:11, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

Image removal (Meesha Shafi)

Hi, you removed the following file : "File:Actress-singer Meesha Shafi and filmmaker Mira Nair at the opening night screening of The Reluctant Fundamentalist 2012 Doha Tribeca Film Festival, November 17, 2012 in Doha, Qatar.jpg" ...citing a copyright violation with a picture posted on another website, however if you look closely you will notice that the two pictures are in fact different and that there were many other people there on the red carpet capturing that very moment, including myself. You will notice that in comparison, my picture is clearer & better composed. Kindly restore to commons and to the Meesha Shafi page it was removed from (Immi2k (talk) 08:37, 5 August 2014 (UTC))

@Immi2k: after examining the pictures extremely closely, I do see the difference. Please accept my apologies. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 21:07, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
@Magog the Ogre: Thank you for looking into this :) any chance you can remove your rather scary looking copyright violation warnings on my commons talk page? Also, can i just go ahead and undo the removal of this picture on Meesha Shafi's page? Immi2k (talk) 00:58, 6 August 2014 (UTC)
@Immi2k: In this case, you can remove the warning yourself, although you probably should keep any discussion for archival reasons. There is no rule against removing talk page warnings when the issue has been resolved. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:10, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

License migration candidates

I just took a look at your code (cleanup.js) because of the post above and the license migration part made me wonder if you had some code so that your bot could run through Category:License migration candidates and fix some of them? My bot used to work on those but it made too many mistakes because of the code in nowiki and a lot of other wierd combinations of text/code/license etc. --MGA73 (talk) 07:46, 6 August 2014 (UTC)

It will have to go on my bucket list, which is unfortunately pretty long at this point. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:13, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
I've done my first batch tonight. It seems almost all of the images were uploaded by User:Marcus Cyron. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:23, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

Agradeciendo tu apoyo - HMPicazo 16:46, August 12, 2014‎ (UTC)

cleanup.js

Aloha! Quick question: Could you add automatic Source = insertion if the field is missing in the info template? Or semi-auto per button? I come across that problem quite often. Thanks for the tool! I really love it! --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 02:53, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

@Hedwig in Washington: Yes. I will add it to the cleanup_ts version in the next few days. I will mark it as a minor edit so the bot will not add the field unless it was already making another edit. You will be able to make minor edits though. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:18, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
Great! Thanks! :) --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 04:17, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
@Hedwig in Washington: did you care where in the template I add the source parameter? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:08, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
No, not really. It would be nice to keep the order as in the original template. In the end it doesn't matter. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 08:02, 14 August 2014 (UTC)

Problem with file

I Never Cry suggested I contact you about the file we spoke of, File:Alma Taylor Life 1.jpg . I have enough information to justify the photo as PS-US-1923-abroad, but that doesn't make it OK here at Commons. If I send this for speedy delete, would you consider restoring the file at en:WP and letting me know so I can fur and license it as PD-US-1923-abroad? Thanks! We hope (talk) 19:21, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

I restored it. Please consider nominating it for deletion rather than marking it for speedy; it may be public domain in the UK as well. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:33, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
This was originally taken for en:Cecil Hepworth's UK film company. The first instance I found with proper attribution was here, in a 1921 French magazine. No idea who took the photo--just that the person worked for Hepworth. Am not wanting to be rid of the photo, but thought that it only met the conditions of PD-US-abroad and had to leave Commons. We hope (talk) 00:37, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
@We hope: you might consider adding that information to the permission field and explaining that we could not find the author, and as such are deeming it anonymous and thus public domain by means of age. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:33, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
OK, I added the information to the file, both here and at en:WP. ;) We hope (talk) 01:12, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi Magog,

Can you check to see if the current file File:Mark Poznansky.jpg is the same as the one deleted as lacking permission back in June (I realise that it is not COM:CSD#G4) however if it is the same that might indicate a link between User:Stuartzs who made this commitment prior to you unblocking and User:Ontario Genomics the up-loader of the image. @LGA: no, they are not the same image. Also, how did CSD become a thing on Commons 5 months ago and I failed to notice? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:36, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

cleanup 2

Hi! I have two things.

  1. It seems cleanup.JS doesn't add source=, only .TS does.
  2. Is there a way that cleanup could detect bracket errors? I often find that in files in the no source category that simply have too many brackets. Usually the problem is in the description, missing the two curly brackets at the beginning or the end.

Just a thought. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 03:49, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

@Hedwig in Washington: I do not maintain the JS version; I do not have the time (nor patience) to maintain two separate sets of code that do the same thing. If you'd like, I've written a script to call the TS version via AJAX (and thus without reloading the page), but it is still (obviously) slower than the browser-side script.
And yes, detecting bad brackets should be doable, most of the time anyway. The bot can add the pages to User:OgreBot/Pages moved to Commons with missing information, which admittedly nobody checks, ever. Or perhaps add a template? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:21, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
Hmmmm, speed is not on issue. the TS-version is still fast enough. Why not cancel .JS then? For the bracket problem I thought more of an automatic system for obvious/easy cases. I am not sure if a template would help? Usually something is wrong in the description part and the file shows up with no source anyway. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 01:00, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
@Hedwig in Washington: Because a lot of people still like it and use it, and because it is more aggressive than the TS version (99.9% of the changes by the TS version are not human checked, so it has to be extremely conservative). Also, if you want, I can open up the code base for you, if you give me a few weeks. I will provide the same caveat for you that it is horrendously structured code. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:14, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
Gotcha. No thanks. I am allergic to java code. I'd love to be better in java, but it is an uphill battle. I grew up doing Basic and Pascal. Somehow I never made it deeper into java than Hello World. :( Maybe I should work on that a little. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 02:59, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
@Hedwig in Washington: it's PHP, not Java. Although Java is my first language so some of my structures my look Java-esque. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 16:15, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
Maybe I should have a look at PHP then? I took a peek into Ruby and it is just not for me. Any suggestions where to start? PHP for dummies? :) --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 20:09, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
@Hedwig in Washington: missed your response! PHP is a very easy language to learn, IMO. The easiest thing is to set up an Apache server, find a Hello World project online, and get it running. Once you do that, it will be easy. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 21:39, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

Syrian map

Hola, acabo de ver esta edición. Solo quería cumplir este consenso (piensa en asumir buena fe antes de acusar de POV). Podrías editar la descripción del modo que creas correcto para incluirlo? -Joan301009 (talk) 18:43, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

@Joan301009: sí; lo haré. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:25, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
@Magog, please refer to this discussion on the issue of adding Israel as belligerent on Syrian civil war maps.Greyshark09 (talk) 09:22, 29 August 2014 (UTC)
I'm somewhat agnostic as to whether it should be included. However, I do know that referring to land in the hands of each of the belligerents as controlled while under Israel as occupied is obvious POV-pushing. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:35, 30 August 2014 (UTC)
How is that "pov", Magog? Please explain. The vast majority of the international community including the UN and EU say that Israel is occupying the Golan Heights, so that is the correct term for it. --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 15:07, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
@SD: It's a land with a lot of different warring factions, and the UN and the international community have condemned other groups as well, notably ISIS and the Syrian government. Our job is not to decide who we think is best and shove that down the throat of the user; our job is just to report the facts on the ground and to avoid loaded terms while doing so. Also, as I've pointed out to you before, but you (unsurprisingly) seem to have missed, you are suffering a severe case of megalomaniacal point of view: the idea that other people's opinions ought to be ignored rather than treated neutrally. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:45, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
Who is deciding: "who we think is best and shove that down the throat of the user" ? The facts on the ground is that Israel is occupying part of Syria. The word used by the international community is "occupied". This is not what "I" think is the best, this is the international community, the extreme vast majority. You want wikipedia and commons to take the side of a very small minority (Israel). If we would go by that exact same standard then we cant say that Haifa is "in Israel" since some Palestinians and Arabs and muslim states don't recognize Israel and refer to the area as Occupied Palestine. But no, you do not want to do this, you only want to take the Israeli side. When its turned around you don't want to apply this. --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 17:15, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
There is no point in discussing this with you. You have several times literally ignored the main thrust of my logic and tried to divert attention to another subargument. People who intentionally ignore part of a conversation in order to push an agenda are by definition POV-pushers. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:38, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Need some help

Hi, regarding this edit, I think I need some assistance here. The documentation with the "PD-anon-auto-1996" template states that it is applicable if a file: (1) was first published outside the United States (check), (2) was first published before 1978 without complying with U.S. copyright formalities (check) and (3) was in the public domain in its home country on the relevant URAA date (2004, check). The book was published without a copyright notice. The publisher does not exist any more, but all rights have been transferred to the library of the University of Wageningen, which has put the whole book online open access, without copyright notice. The photo is without credit (hence anonymous). It therefore seemed to me that "PD-anon-auto-1996" was applicable, but the template does not display correctly and gives an error message. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for your assistance! --Randykitty (talk) 18:13, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

@Randykitty: - the problem is that it was published in 1980, and the Netherlands had no requirement that a work have a copyright notice on it. As such, its copyrights were restored in the US on the URAA date (1996, incidentally). Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:57, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

So is there another template that I should use or is this just a copyvio in that case? Or can I contact the library at Wageningen and ask them to send an email at OTRS? --Randykitty (talk) 08:00, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

@Randykitty: currently it is a copyvio. It is always worth a try through OTRS - sometimes subjects are willing to agree to the terms. A good starting point is Commons:Email templates(English)/Commons:E-mailsjablonen(Dutch). Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:32, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Funny bot-edit

Hi. this edit looks a bit strange (the license part). If you still run the script then perhaps you could fix it. File is in the license migration category so users should check and fix eventually so no big deal. --MGA73 (talk) 17:49, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

@MGA73: D'oh! Nice catch, I've never seen that one; and I'll work to fix it when I am home and have some time. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:34, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
I'm trying to clean out Category:License migration candidates and found it there :-). Perhaps you could tell your bot to replace Bild-GFDL with GFDL and the other redirects? I think it makes it easer to clean up. Also changing substing Template:Kettős licenc and similar would help. --MGA73 (talk) 19:57, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
@MGA73: - can you give me an example of where the GFDL and its redirect could be fixed? The change is easy to make, but I'd like to test it first. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:18, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
Hi Magog the Ogre. In files like File:Werner Thissen (2007).jpg, File:جواهرده.jpeg and the other files in Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Bild-GFDL the license could be changed. Also files like File:Oberndorf Kirche 1976 ret.jpg could be changed. There could also be cases with other templates like PD-self where it would be better to use the english name instead of. "مالکیت عمومی-خود " --MGA73 (talk) 16:55, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
Another example File:Seoska Arhitektura.jpg + File:Cathédrale orthodoxe de Zaječar.jpg. --MGA73 (talk) 19:58, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
The first was an innocuous enough fix.[2] The second one will require a rewrite that I honestly may not have time to do. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:44, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
Actually, that template should be pointing to Template:GFDL-sr. I will fix this at some point shortly. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:49, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
It is not a big problem so just fix the easy parts :-) --MGA73 (talk) 17:05, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

This image is on en.wiki with a do not move to Commons tag. I'm not familiar with dealing with these. Should it be speedied or DR'd? INeverCry 20:30, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

@INeverCry: In this case, it has the PD-US-1923-abroad license, but no one explicitly marked it as Keep Local. The license just says that the image was probably published before 1923, and is thus free in the US, although not necessarily in its home nation. If you are sure that it is free in its home nation too, then you can feel free to transfer it to Commons or mark it transferred. The only other time you need to worry is if someone explicitly marked it Keep Local, as they wanted it to be on English Wikipedia for whatever reason. Then you have to go through FFD. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:29, 13 September 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. I've tagged it with CSD F8 on en.wiki. INeverCry 00:51, 13 September 2014 (UTC)

Custom license marker

Hi. I noticed that {{Custom license marker}} is on files like File:Fuente de la Plaza Escultor García Rueda 002.JPG. Can you think of cases where it is usefull? If not perhaps your bot could remove it :-) --MGA73 (talk) 13:04, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

@MGA73: I don't know why it's on there. Try asking at COM:VP; I'm sure there's some reason for it. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 16:30, 14 September 2014 (UTC)
Thank you Magog. I posted on VP :-) --MGA73 (talk) 11:17, 15 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi Magog. Cleanup TS would make a strange addition to this file description page. That same would have happened with this old version and File:Grabmal Müffling Brühler Garten.jpg. Could you please check that? --Leyo 07:42, 15 September 2014 (UTC)

The problem is that sometimes users make mistakes like using "((" instead of "{{" and one "{" instead of 2 "{{". It would be nice if the script could count the number of "{" and fix them. Or at least if we could have a list of all pages with a wrong number of "{" and "}". Hope Magog can do magic :-) --MGA73 (talk) 11:25, 15 September 2014 (UTC)
@Leyo, MGA73: This actually sounds pretty difficult. Maybe the bot could add a new template like {{Pages with incorrectly transcluded templates}}. We would have to fix this by hand. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 21:57, 15 September 2014 (UTC)
Sounds like a good idea. In case there would be several dozen files per day, we would need to find additional helping hands. --Leyo 22:09, 15 September 2014 (UTC)
@Leyo and Magog. Are most of the files not in Category:Pages using Information template with syntax errors? --MGA73 (talk) 13:16, 16 September 2014 (UTC)
Probably not (any more). Just replace “}}” of a language template of a random file description page by e.g. “))”. It will likely not even be in any maintenance category. --Leyo 17:58, 16 September 2014 (UTC)
That's an overly specific case. 99% of incorrect templates wouldn't be so easy to fix. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:08, 16 September 2014 (UTC)
I am unsure what you mean. I was replying to MGA's comment above and described on how to produce a file with an uneven number of waivy brackets that is not is Category:Pages using Information template with syntax errors. Hence, I assume that there would be more cases than that. --Leyo 00:02, 17 September 2014 (UTC)
@Leyo perhaps we should pay rent to Magog for using so much space on his talk page :-D
If Magog think it is a good idea and can spare some time and fix the bot so it adds a template we will know shortly how big the problem is. We can evaluate after a few weeks and if it is a success then we celebrate and if not Magog can always remove the template from the script. --MGA73 (talk) 10:23, 17 September 2014 (UTC)
Sounds like a plan. :-) --Leyo 17:06, 17 September 2014 (UTC)
I checked and fixed some and the most common error is "User:Some name|Some name" without the [[ and ]] around. But Probably not worth the time to fix the script. --MGA73 (talk) 18:01, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

This edit

Hi this edit made me wonder about the "nobots". Perhaps you could remove it? --MGA73 (talk) 15:20, 15 September 2014 (UTC)

@MGA73: Peachy is supposed to ignore such pages altogether, although obviously it is failing. Maybe you should talk to the guy who makes the tools and have him/her ignore that template? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 21:54, 15 September 2014 (UTC)
You just made my brain stop working... Is it not Ogre bot that made this edit? Anyway it is not a big deal for me as long as the edits are okay :-D --MGA73 (talk) 13:13, 16 September 2014 (UTC)
The template was already on the page. In reality, the bot shouldn't be editing the page to begin with. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:07, 16 September 2014 (UTC)
Yes that is true. I think it was wrong to have the nobots on the page in the first place but it is probably better to have humans remove it. Lets just close this one :-) --MGA73 (talk) 10:12, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

Hello!

Thank you for uploading File:Jen Taylor.jpg to the Wikimedia Commons. I noticed that when you uploaded from another Wikimedia project, you left out some important information, or copied it incorrectly. In the future, please consider using CommonsHelper, a tool which automates the process of moving files over. Thank you,

Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 16:15, 20 September 2014 (UTC)

Hello Magog. I did not know this tool at all. OK, I will try it next time. Thank you for notifying me--Archimëa (talk) 18:57, 20 September 2014 (UTC)

I left a note at COM:VPC. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:27, 26 September 2014 (UTC)
I don't understand this note. I still don't understand why this pic has been deleted. Without this pic I cannot complete my article. I'm in despair. Please help me to understand what is going on .... Please answer directly in straight forward words.--Meister und Margarita (talk) 17:26, 27 September 2014 (UTC)
@Meister und Margarita: OK, this is a bit complicated, but I will go through it step by step:
  • You left a license indicating that you were the author of the image. This was not correct, as the image was taken 115 years ago.
  • Soon, you fixed that to indicate a third party source with the correct author. But a license the page ({{Cc-by-4.0}}) without any proof of permission.
  • You uploaded it again without any of those licenses. But then I noticed that you got it from w:File:Georgia Douglas Johnson.jpg, where it is marked as fair use there. Unlike English Wikipedia, Commons doesn't allow fair use (see Commons:Fair use/de).
  • Finally, I asked at the village pump if maybe the image is public domain due to its age in case someone knows more about its history. The answer is that it depends on when it was published. See Commons:Hirtle chart for more information. But in short, if we don't know the history, we err on the side of caution and delete the image.
  • Because we don't know if it's free, your best bet is to follow the instructions at Template:Image permission. That way, we can get permission from the copyright holder.

ETFE Installation Picture | Manchester Victoria Station

Hi, I notice you commented on the status of the picture I downloaded. I was given permission off the Copyright Holder, Steve Hyde, which I will quote:

I messaged him, via. SkyScraperCity:

"I am writing to you to ask if I can use one of your photos of the ETFE being inflated this morning, 18th September, posted on the Victoria Thread, to strengthen the Wikipedia page. The page looks quite bare in comparison to other pages of the same type. If you are comfortable with this, would it be possible to remove the copyright tag along the bottom. I would still add full ownership to you and a link to this page on the disambiguation, or your photo-hosting page. I understand fully if you are uncomfortable with this - it's no sweat - but I would really appreciate this, and I will continue to strengthen GM transport pages in Wiki"

He replied:

"No problem at all especially on the terms you have suggested."

I hope this is enough.

Pjm0512 (talk) 23:12, 28 September 2014 (UTC)

@Pjm0512: Mr. Hyde will still need to actually provide a license. He can create an account and add himself as an author on the page, along with a license, or he can follow the instructions at Commons:Email templates. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:40, 28 September 2014 (UTC)

The National Archives UK

Hi, thanks for posting on my talk page about the two images from the The National Archives UK. The images can be found on Flickr at the addresses mentioned but in flickr the coypright states "no known copy right restrictions". I'm new to uploading images to wikicommons and very new to unloading Flickr images. Is it okay to use these images? I thought that since they are from the national archives it seemed very likely that they would be okay to use but please correct me if I'm wrong. If not, just let me know how I can tag the "UK national Archives" photos in the future to avoid confusion. Thanks again!Monopoly31121993 (talk) 17:32, 5 October 2014 (UTC)

@Monopoly31121993: I fixed the pages. Note the template I added showing no copyright restrictions, as well as the {{Flickrreview}} template so that the bot can stamp this image as currently available under this license (it may not be available at a future date). Clean up of new upload

Hi! Your bot here removed the transferring template from the description page. Why did it so? --Tacsipacsi (talk) 17:11, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

@Tacsipacsi: this was discussed at the bot's request for approval. To quote Leyo: "IMO the information template should only contain information that is relevant for a reader or reusers. The fact that a file was first uploaded to Wikipedia and then transferred to Commons by User:XY is not relevant in this sense. Hence, it is sufficient that this information is contained in the original upload log and in the text next to the thumb." Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:01, 7 October 2014 (UTC)
I hadn't known about it. Then can you remove the asterisk? --Tacsipacsi (talk) 16:47, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
@Tacsipacsi: Good idea. I will add it to my bucket list. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:40, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

CU attention needed

INeverCry 02:46, 14 October 2014 (UTC)

Hi Magog

I wanted to upload all the versions of this file and the bot said "succes" but it seems that only some of the versions were uploaded. Is there a max of xx versions you can upload with the bot? Or is there just some delay?

--MGA73 (talk) 16:18, 18 October 2014 (UTC)

Oh it was only downloading that was succesful. It did not say that uploading was. Well I'd better wait before I try to upload the latest versions. Perhaps the bot will upload some more. :-) --MGA73 (talk) 16:30, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
I transferred the rest later so problem is solved :-) --MGA73 (talk) 17:48, 18 October 2014 (UTC)

About image I uploaded

Hey no problem. I was just wondering that is actually the mascot of our high school and we use it all the time all over facebook for events and our school district doesn't seem to mind is that grounds enough for it to be be used on Wikimedia? --Sanjev Rajaram (talk) 02:45, 19 October 2014 (UTC)

@Sanjev Rajaram: no, it is not grounds for hosting it on Commons. You probably should upload it to English Wikipedia as fair use. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:53, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

File:Victoria ETFE Instillation.jpg

Hi,

I would like to appeal of your deleting of the file 'Victoria ETFE Instillation.jpg'. I have personally talked to the copyright owner and he told me specifically, and I quote: "No problem at all especially on the terms you have suggested."

The terms I suggested were: "If you are comfortable with this, would it be possible to remove the copyright tag along the bottom. I would still add full ownership to you and a link to this page on the disambiguation, or your photo-hosting page.

I understand fully if you are uncomfortable with this - it's no sweat - but I would really appreciate this, and I will continue to strengthen GM transport pages in Wiki."

I feel it is quite ignorant that you have deleted this picture and, to repeat; would like to appeal.

Yours Faithfully, Pjm0512 (talk) 18:12, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

@Pjm0512: please see COM:L. All content on Commons must be freely usable under terms that are compatible with GFDL/CC-BY-SA-3.0. "Permission for this photo to be published on this site but not to be reproduced anywhere other than on this Wikipedia page" is not a culturally free work. Sorry. Commons:Deletion requests/File:Xu jiao mr go.jpg - In future, if you leave me a notice on my talk page, I'm ready to see if it really has permission or not, or anything needs my language skill. (Looks like ping is not delivered these days... maybe just me.) — revimsg 18:10, 25 October 2014 (UTC)

Also, if you blocked 양념파닭 per DR above, maybe you should consider shortening (or unblocking) his block... — revimsg 18:15, 25 October 2014 (UTC)
@-revi: I actually blocked based on other recent uploads: Special:Log/양념파닭. If you have information that any of those shouldn't have been deleted, please let me know. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 17:26, 26 October 2014 (UTC)
If I had chance to review his uploads, I would have passed recent 3 uploads (domain with jjoa-grapher.tistory.com/). That have valid CC BY mark, and then per the DR above. Forth's name contains "Poster". — revimsg 17:41, 26 October 2014 (UTC)
@-revi: Where is the CC BY mark? And who is Forth, and what does "Poster" have anything to do with this situation? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 17:47, 26 October 2014 (UTC)
First, go to image in question. (this time, here). Then, scroll down till the bottom. If you really really carefully see the right side of bottom line, you'll see the BY icon.
Forth (Image), and I meant "it is copyvio" :P — revimsg 17:51, 26 October 2014 (UTC)
@-revi: OK, I see it now, although I'd almost need a microscope to find it. Could you please tag the images with the correct cc version, as Google Translate doesn't work on JavaScript popups? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 18:13, 26 October 2014 (UTC)
Also, by all means please unblock and have a conversation with this guy on his talk page in Korean about what "own work" means, as clearly the templates aren't communicating much. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 18:14, 26 October 2014 (UTC)
It's {{Cc-by-2.0-kr}}, but I'll tag it/ unblock and talk tomorrow. (3 AM on KST.) — revimsg 18:17, 26 October 2014 (UTC)

Vandalism by Greyshark

User Greyshark removed "occupied by Israel" [3] and changed it to "disputed", despite the agreement at Wikipedia that we say that it is occupied. Where at Wikipedia or commons has there been an agreement to say that its "disputed" ?

Greyshark just went straight in and reverted it to his pov without discussion. He had no right to do that, when I reverted him I asked in the edit summary "Who agreed to this?"... he then reverted me without saying anything. His edits are now clearly vandalism.--Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 23:51, 30 October 2014 (UTC)

OgreBot 2 bug

Hi, I just want to let you know that OgreBot 2 seems to have made a mistake in this edit. The text "|Source =" was added to the description, apparently by mistake. —Mr. Granger (talk  · contribs) 16:17, 28 October 2014 (UTC)

@Mr. Granger: actually the information template was closed after the description; it was just adding the source to it, although you're right maybe the bot could have handled it better by tagging the image. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 21:12, 28 October 2014 (UTC)
@Mr. Granger: I added a fix for this. The bot should recognize this scenario in the future. Please advise if there are others and I will try to make a code fix if it is possible and not too burdensome. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 21:44, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

Some help with German categories

Greetings, Magog. Now, there is a very well-intentioned editor here by the name of Drdoht. They add a lot of valuable contributions, such as by annotating images wherein they identify the Germans in the image, but they do not have a firm understanding of some basic things. For instance, they create a lot of categories for individual persons, and in these categories, they do not populate them with even the most basic categories such as years of birth and death. They also do not add the all-important DEFAULTSORT to these categories, a point which I think I may have finally driven home to them. They have apparently created hundreds of categories like this. Is there a way for a bot to add the correct DEFAULTSORTs to these or do they all have to be done manually? They also do not seem to be aware that the categories on the Commons are supposed to be in English (or am I wrong about this?): they created a bit of mess here and here that I am confused about how to clean up. Agrarwissenschaftler is German for agronomist. I tried to communicate with them, but it seems that there is a language barrier. Perhaps we could find an admin who is fluent in German who could explain the err of their ways without chasing away another well-meaning expert in the field? - Hoops gza (talk) 20:56, 25 November 2014 (UTC)

@Hoops gza: try pinging one of the admins listed as a German speaker at COM:ADMIN. There is a large number of them. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:21, 26 November 2014 (UTC)
