Counter Vandalism Unit

Hi Krinkle, I just checked March 16, 22:30 - 24:00. I went through all edits and removed the vandalism found. There are still many edits where I can't say if they are good (this would be quite time-intensive). Should I only mark a period of time as patrolled, when all individual edits have been marked as checked? --myself488 (talk) 22:46, 18 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi Myself488,

Any edit that you found good, or found bad (and reverted) should be [marked as patrolled]. Any edits you are unsure of are best left unpatrolled. A period of time in the list at COM:ANON should only be marked as done when there are no more unpatrolled edits (I therefor put back the link in the list). Depending on the number of unpatrolled edits you weren't sure of, I suggest either trying to find out yourself, or (if unsuccesfull) mark the edit as patrolled and leave a message on the talk-page of that page linking to the edit and saying you're unsure. If the edit you were unsure involves a fact (year, date etc.) then I suggest reverting it and asking the anonymous user on his user-talkpage for proof. -- --Krinkle^talk 23:05, 18 March 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for your input. The checklist is to keep track of what has been patrolled. By patrolling I mean 'taken care of'. Since a good edit needs no special 'taking care of', those are marked and then no furher action. A bad edit usually follows an undo, rollback, deletion, block and/or message on the users' talkpage.
If we wouldn't mark bad edits as patrolled, then there is no way of knowing whether it's bad or not patrolled yet. I'll see if I can make it more clear in the red box.
By the way, I uploaded a short video introduction on the Counter Vandalism Unit, you can find it on the right hand side of COM:ANON I recommend watching it, even though one maybe an experienced user, we all experience things differently and might pick up a few handy tricks. -- --Krinkle^talk 12:27, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

Old unpatrolled queue

Hi Krinkle. It will be hard enough to keek up-to-date with the current system this time. Considering the fact it takes far over one hour the patroll a complet day, workload will simply be too much. At least as long as we are only three people. IMHO we should focus our work at the current list. --myself488 ^talk 15:22, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

I agree with you, however I think the list should stay regardless. Just so we have it, know it, and don't have to load that huge page to find out which days are in the backlog.

Another reason why I find this important is the 30-day exceed time for the Wiki-software. After 720 hours (30 days) an edit is automaticly marked as patrolled by the software. So we should try above all to not let that happen. So, I agree recent stream is high priority, but those potentially falling off the 30-day mark have a priority aswell.

One question though, do you use some special software or tools ? I notice you're very fast ! Don't forget to notify/inform or warn users when reverting vandalism. I say so, because the usertalk-page edits don't seem to match numbers. Either way, you're doing great and keep up the good work –Krinkle^talk 15:31, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

My priority over the last view days was to keep up-to-date with the list again. I don't use a special software however I optimized the system e.g. I don't mark a term as 'in progress'. Still it's a long-lasting process. As many anonymous users have dynamic IPs, it's unlikly they will get a message, or that vandals will improve their behavior due to a kind message. --myself488 ^talk 16:09, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

My experience is that most vandals will stop vandalising when they recieve even just a simple {{Welcome}} template while they are still online (ie. when doing watching the live feed in IRC or when viewing the current portion of Special:RecentChanges) - because they realise they are no longer anonymous. Either way, posting a warning (tho one should never judge one only by the talkpage) will give leave a first impression to other vandalfighters that find edits of this user.

About dynamic IP adresses, I'm not sure. Though they sure do exist, I find in my environment in real-life and on my homewiki that it's becoming less common. More and more ISPs assign static IP-addresses, and those that are dynamic have a longer era of time per assignment. –Krinkle^talk 16:16, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

We are already over 1000 edits behind, and I won't be able to contribut as much as last week. So unless we find new users, it's likly that the whole project might break down. I will ask at the village pump for more supporter, either way I'm still the opinion that we should forget the old edits and focus our work at the current list. --myself488 ^talk 09:51, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

I'm trying the best I can, but I still believe the older edits are as much as important. Main reason being that in the present/recent we have people watchign #cvn-commons live. Any blacklisted IP-addresses (IPs that got warned or blocked in the past) are most likely caught live and reverted. Also things like 'blanked the page', 'replaced page with' and 'added lots of text' are pointed out in the live-channel. Before the introduction of patrolled edits this wasn't the case. Next week I will be continueing that way: Watching live the channel, and in the background checking out an old list. Then whatever went unnoticed in the channel (either not pointed out or just not clicked by anyone) will be done afterwards in the checklists. I already notice a big difference between the amount of edits on an old day and a new day. The newer ones contain less unpartrolled edits because a fair bit is done live now. I will see if I can shuffle up some more folks to help out.

Sorry - that should have been stated as a question - in the case where I am manually changing categories at Borobudur, and various other Yogyakarta and Surakarta items - if I have a correct category, but I know that in reality there might be only a small number of potential items to go in - is that an issue? The catmatrix isn't finished yet by a long shot. I'd like to give credit to Bot Master Multichil for writing the botscript that creates all the categories automaticly (he ran a few for testing here). Krinkle, I do not mind your edit here, but explanation of it seems to be wrong. If I understand it right you claim that for example w:pl:radio is somehow different than pl:radio. Hi, thanks for your comment. Sorry for nitpicking (I'm not saying there is a world of difference, but there is a small one):

The first one makes contact to en.wikipedia, which redirects you to pl.wikipedia. This happends because 'w' is the code for wikipedia and defaults to English (just like 'm' for 'meta'). the 'pl' is for Polish and defaults to Wikipedia (eg. not pl.wiktionary.org). The second linkmethod saves us (and Wikimedia) one extra server request/pageload. It's not much, I admit. Es gab Probleme mit Vorlage: "{{Object location dec}}" und "{{Location dec}}". Vorher gaben beide "Error: Invalid parameters!" auf die Seite (guck mal hier). Seit meiner 'edit' ist eins von die beiden repariert (guck mal hier). Danach hat ein bot die andere auch repariert.

Über den Lokalisationen; Auf Commons gibt er Sprache-vorlagen die die Sprache angeben. Diese Vorlagen haben keine Flagge. Weil das aussehen van die Lokalisationen universell sein soll, ist es darum, nach meiner Meinung verkehrt Bilder zu platzen in einer Lokalisationen-Vorlage. Ich sage also nicht dass Flagge im Algemein falsch sind bei Lokalisirung, ich sage nur dass es nach meiner Meinung verkehrt es auf der Seite selber zu tun (also, vielleicht besser die Vorlage zu ändern damit es zentralisiert ist).

Du kannst auf Commons:Language templates und Commons:Multilinguality vielleicht drüber diskutieren ob es eine gute Idee ist Flagge zu introduzieren. Dann ist es auch viel einfacher Flagge zu ändern oder so was. Dass ist ja der Prinzip von Vorlagen ! Gruße, –Krinkle^talk 00:30, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

Hallo Krinkle, die Probleme mit Vorlagen "{{Object location dec}}" und "{{Location dec}}" können nur durch nachträgliche Änderungen dieser Vorlagen aufgetreten sein. Als ich die Bilder hochgeladen habe, war das alles noch in Ordnung.

Vandalism thats not

I was reverting it for two reasons.
1) The IP that erased the unblock-request (4.248.60.157) did not match the IP address to whom the User-talk page belongs (4.248.56.99).
2) It should be kept for archive unless the IP is no longer asigned to the same user, in which case the page could be deleted and re-created blank.

Files marked no permission.

You have marked files of mine as lacking permission ( see File:Escutcheon of the House of Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov by Alexander Liptak.png for an example). I have created those images specifically for Wikipedia, and as such they are not hosted from my website. So, emailing a release of images from my site will accomplish nothing. They exist no where else on the Internet, save for those sites that copy Wikipedia's content blindly. So, being that the originals are on my laptop, is there another way to provide proof of release? Though there are several options, here are a the two I can recommend :

If the files have nothing to do with your website nor do or will appear on the site, then I'd not mention the site or it's terms at all. Just make it a | Source = {{Own work}} | Author = [[User:Xanderliptak|]] | Permission = {{Self|<license here>}}.
If they do appear on the site, then a quick e-mail to OTRS using a template (linking to the site and choosing the license) is good.

OK. Ik heb de div teruggeplaatst. Zie ook MediaWiki:AjaxTranslation.js var tablesInDocument = getElementsByClassName(document, "*", "layouttemplate");. De div is dus zodat javascript weet welk deel van de pagina vervangen moet worden. OK. Dan laat ik die staan

. (Trouwens, het hoeft niet perse in een div. Wanneer het gehele sjabloon maar uit 1 tabel bestaat kan de class daar bij in (class='wikitable layouttemplate'), maar i.v.m. de creative-commons sjablon erbij hier in een aparte div).

Thank you for noticing. I erased the space because on Template-pages that use this without parameters (like here: Template:NationAndOccupation) an empty pre-box is generated because there is only a space, like this:

Gadget-UserMessages

You edited in MediaWiki namespace, so maybe you can help. In IE (7.0.6) and Firefox (3.6.3) I get an error message on user talkpages, the usermessages from the toolbox are gone. Error is the same in Vector and MonoBook skin, the error message is shown in the site notice.

Special rights

I'm not always able to phrase things diplomatically if I think something is being done wrong, and I've had some clashes with certain well-known individuals at Commons from time to time, so I've never bothered to ask for any special privileges here in the past. Patrolled/Autopatrolled

Regarding your recent revert of my changes to the Commons:Patrol page, if you take a look at Special:Log/rights admins are giving users the autopatrolled right each day on the basis that they make "good" edits. The policy page should probably be descriptive of what really happens, rather than proscriptive (what should happen) regardless of whether we have a good system for patrolling logged in users. I think there's a lot of confusion about the user rights involved and the patrolling system which is why admins have been giving out these user rights. Killiondude (talk) 18:30, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

Hello, as you're the one who wrote the great Sitenotice translation script, I thought you might be able to help me with a problem that I recently encountered. As it's probably pretty clear, the big Anoneditwarning is rather user-unfriendly with all those languages and should be restricted to the language that the user speaks. I've reused your sitenotice translation code and adjusted it to use the navigator.language instead of the wgUserLanguage, but it didn't work. Hi, I'am new to wiki commons and I want to upload some of images taken from my camera but I have two concerns --

1) How to add metadata in image description,I want to add but I dont know how to...

2) How to view the galary of images uploaded by me?

You can see a gallery of all your uploads here (currently empty as you've not uploaded yet).

Meta data can be added in two ways. Depending on what you mean I'll give you two answer:

"EXIF" data is metadata contained within the file that comes from your digital camera, this contains data such as the camerabrand, shooting date and time and other information. See also EXIF on Wikipedia.

If you mean the information shown below the image, you can use the {{Information}} template for that. Below some short info:

| Date           = YYYY-MM-DD (Date here in that format, like 2009-02-27)

Since Commons is international, we have several translation templates. In most cases those appear within {{ and }} characters.

It looks very good. It is certainly not wrong. There are two things I'd like to say tho:

1) Note the date in the YYYY-MM-DD format, this way it will be recognized by the software and translated automaticly

2) The == Source: ==-heading was not needed, since it is already in the {{Information| Source= -part.

Wass meinst du ? Ob du das foto brauchen darf und in den nuts dem Text "Das ist kein krash" über den Foto schreiben ? Dan ist mein antwort, "Ja". Das foto ist licenciert mit mehre licenszen, auch mit "Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 3.0". Das heisst, du darfst Foto brauchen wie und wo du möchtest, aber 2 sachen: 1) Name des Fotografierer musst genännt werden. 2) Das neue Produkt muss mit selbe Licensz sein (also deine version auch mit "Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 3.0"). –Krinkle^talk 15:22, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
