Counter Vandalism Unit

Hi Krinkle, I just checked March 16, 22:30 - 24:00. I went through all edits and removed the vandalism found. There are still many edits where I can't say if they are good (this would be quite time-intensive). Should I only mark a period of time as patrolled, when all individual edits have been marked as checked? --myself488 (talk) 22:46, 18 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi Myself488,
Any edit that you found good, or found bad (and reverted) should be [marked as patrolled]. Any edits you are unsure of are best left unpatrolled. A period of time in the list at COM:ANON should only be marked as done when there are no more unpatrolled edits (I therefor put back the link in the list). Depending on the number of unpatrolled edits you weren't sure of, I suggest either trying to find out yourself, or (if unsuccesfull) mark the edit as patrolled and leave a message on the talk-page of that page linking to the edit and saying you're unsure. If the edit you were unsure involves a fact (year, date etc.) then I suggest reverting it and asking the anonymous user on his user-talkpage for proof. -- --Krinkletalk 23:05, 18 March 2010 (UTC)
Hi Krinkle, I also didn't know that I've to mark all edits as patrolled, also the reverted or reverted in the meanwhile by others. I find, that's not very clear - wouldn't it be a good idea to place a hint into the red box of COM:CVU? --Haneburger (talk) 12:08, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for your input. The checklist is to keep track of what has been patrolled. By patrolling I mean 'taken care of'. Since a good edit needs no special 'taking care of', those are marked and then no furher action. A bad edit usually follows an undo, rollback, deletion, block and/or message on the users' talkpage.
If we wouldn't mark bad edits as patrolled, then there is no way of knowing whether it's bad or not patrolled yet. I'll see if I can make it more clear in the red box.
By the way, I uploaded a short video introduction on the Counter Vandalism Unit, you can find it on the right hand side of COM:ANON I recommend watching it, even though one maybe an experienced user, we all experience things differently and might pick up a few handy tricks. -- --Krinkletalk 12:27, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

Old unpatrolled queue

Hi Krinkle. It will be hard enough to keek up-to-date with the current system this time. Considering the fact it takes far over one hour the patroll a complet day, workload will simply be too much. At least as long as we are only three people. IMHO we should focus our work at the current list. --myself488 talk 15:22, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

I agree with you, however I think the list should stay regardless. Just so we have it, know it, and don't have to load that huge page to find out which days are in the backlog.
Another reason why I find this important is the 30-day exceed time for the Wiki-software. After 720 hours (30 days) an edit is automaticly marked as patrolled by the software. So we should try above all to not let that happen. So, I agree recent stream is high priority, but those potentially falling off the 30-day mark have a priority aswell.
One question though, do you use some special software or tools ? I notice you're very fast ! Don't forget to notify/inform or warn users when reverting vandalism. I say so, because the usertalk-page edits don't seem to match numbers. Either way, you're doing great and keep up the good work –Krinkletalk 15:31, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
My priority over the last view days was to keep up-to-date with the list again. I don't use a special software however I optimized the system e.g. I don't mark a term as 'in progress'. Still it's a long-lasting process. As many anonymous users have dynamic IPs, it's unlikly they will get a message, or that vandals will improve their behavior due to a kind message. --myself488 talk 16:09, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
My experience is that most vandals will stop vandalising when they recieve even just a simple {{Welcome}} template while they are still online (ie. when doing watching the live feed in IRC or when viewing the current portion of Special:RecentChanges) - because they realise they are no longer anonymous. Either way, posting a warning (tho one should never judge one only by the talkpage) will give leave a first impression to other vandalfighters that find edits of this user.
About dynamic IP adresses, I'm not sure. Though they sure do exist, I find in my environment in real-life and on my homewiki that it's becoming less common. More and more ISPs assign static IP-addresses, and those that are dynamic have a longer era of time per assignment. –Krinkletalk 16:16, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
We are already over 1000 edits behind, and I won't be able to contribut as much as last week. So unless we find new users, it's likly that the whole project might break down. I will ask at the village pump for more supporter, either way I'm still the opinion that we should forget the old edits and focus our work at the current list. --myself488 talk 09:51, 5 April 2010 (UTC)
I'm trying the best I can, but I still believe the older edits are as much as important. Main reason being that in the present/recent we have people watchign #cvn-commons live. Any blacklisted IP-addresses (IPs that got warned or blocked in the past) are most likely caught live and reverted. Also things like 'blanked the page', 'replaced page with' and 'added lots of text' are pointed out in the live-channel. Before the introduction of patrolled edits this wasn't the case. Next week I will be continueing that way: Watching live the channel, and in the background checking out an old list. Then whatever went unnoticed in the channel (either not pointed out or just not clicked by anyone) will be done afterwards in the checklists. I already notice a big difference between the amount of edits on an old day and a new day. The newer ones contain less unpartrolled edits because a fair bit is done live now. I will see if I can shuffle up some more folks to help out.
PS: If you have the ability, I recommend coming online on IRC ! Live-watching is an easy and effective method ! –Krinkletalk 12:11, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

Categories

Hi Krinkle! I noticed an edit you made [here]. I don't quite understand why you removed some categories there. I understand not having a file in a category AND it's subcategory, but why remove the subcategory yoghurt for example and leave the category dairy products, and at the same time leave the subcategory soy yoghurt and remove the category soy products? I am new here on commons, so maybe I missed some guideline on categories and you can explain. Greets! --Feuerrabe (talk) 08:04, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi Feuerrabe,
The first thing you mentioned is right. I didn't realise the others were mother cats aswell. See my next edit. For more information see also COM:OVERCAT. --Krinkletalk 08:39, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks

For the recat at Parangtritis - I think from memory there are only about 4 other named beaches that could be known as that SatuSuro (talk) 23:51, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

Sorry - that should have been stated as a question - in the case where I am manually changing categories at Borobudur, and various other Yogyakarta and Surakarta items - if I have a correct category, but I know that in reality there might be only a small number of potential items to go in - is that an issue? SatuSuro (talk) 01:21, 25 March 2010 (UTC)
Though I can't decide that right now. One way to measure cat-worthyness is to think if there can potentially be a Wikipedia article about it and/or if it will be fuller then ± 10 items. This is not a rule of any kind, but something that one could use. --Krinkletalk 01:24, 25 March 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for that - that makes good sense and I appreciate that as a useful way to think about it - the beaches of Yogyakarta aka Parangtritis could easily be an article (or more) even with only 4 or so nameable beaches, and some of the sub categories for Borobudur and other places could easily have articles - your cat-matrix is awesome - if you dont mind me saying so! SatuSuro (talk) 01:33, 25 March 2010 (UTC)
The catmatrix isn't finished yet by a long shot. I'd like to give credit to Bot Master Multichil for writing the botscript that creates all the categories automaticly (he ran a few for testing here). He linked me the botscript and I basicly added all columns and rows from my cat-matrix to it for the bot to run through. --Krinkletalk 01:38, 25 March 2010 (UTC)

Question

I can see you are into bulk work at the moment - but now that I have more or less fixed the categories for the hidden reliefs photographed by Kassian Cephas - I am about to try to do an english summary line for each of the 159 items - and I look at

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:COLLECTIE_TROPENMUSEUM_Reliëf_O_114_op_de_verborgen_voet_van_de_Borobudur_TMnr_10015666.jpg
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:COLLECTIE_TROPENMUSEUM_Reliëf_O_14_op_de_verborgen_voet_van_de_Borobudur_TMnr_10015752.jpg

and realise my attempt at 14 is not the literal translation it should be - if I were to apply the 114 version to each file as a summary line only - do you think that would be ok? (I plan to do further work at wp en and here to clarify information about the hidden reliefs ) - just checking as I realise you are currently and are a speaker :) SatuSuro (talk) 15:24, 25 March 2010 (UTC)

Sorry to have been nuisance - I have thought through my own answer - the 114 version appears to be correct and ok SatuSuro (talk) 22:48, 25 March 2010 (UTC)

interwiki links

Krinkle, I do not mind your edit here, but explanation of it seems to be wrong. If I understand it right you claim that for example w:pl:radio is somehow different than pl:radio. They both go to the same page in Polish wiki, so the change is purely cosmetic. But I prefer the second form. Congratulation on the progress of RFA.--Jarekt (talk) 02:18, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for your comment. Sorry for nitpicking (I'm not saying there is a world of difference, but there is a small one):
The first one makes contact to en.wikipedia, which redirects you to pl.wikipedia. This happends because 'w' is the code for wikipedia and defaults to English (just like 'm' for 'meta'). the 'pl' is for Polish and defaults to Wikipedia (eg. not pl.wiktionary.org). The second linkmethod saves us (and Wikimedia) one extra server request/pageload. It's not much, I admit. But defaulting in a much used Template I think it's worth the change. --Krinkletalk 08:37, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
Hey, I checked html source and you are wright. I guess I learn something every day. Thanks--Jarekt (talk) 12:53, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

Krinkle, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and its subpages), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Have a look at the list of Gadgets (on the bottom there are the ones specifically for admins – however, for example the UserMessages are very helpful too).

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.libera.chat. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators: #wikimedia-commons-admin webchat.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading. You can find the admin backlog overview at COM:AB.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

Engelhardt (talk) 14:11, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

I contacted OTRS but the Ticket number you referenced did not contain a valid permission. I have no further details on that. The files will thuss stay deleted, for now that is. Also, you have contributed here using an IP-address, which has no further contributions. These files were uploaded by User:SchoolcraftT. –Krinkletalk 19:30, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

I'll ask OTRS again. And please don't change the timestamps of your posts. The timestamps on Commons are in UTC/GMT. The easiest way to sign your IP + time is to type 4 tildes(~~~~). These will automaticly be replaced with the current timestamp in UTC. –Krinkletalk 12:45, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

Vandalism thats not

Krinkle You are reverting a unblock request on User_Talk 4.248.56.99 for a block that had already expired and was no loger needed. JTS — Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.248.60.157 (talk • contribs) 09:43, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

I was reverting it for two reasons.
1) The IP that erased the unblock-request (4.248.60.157) did not match the IP address to whom the User-talk page belongs (4.248.56.99).
2) It should be kept for archive unless the IP is no longer asigned to the same user, in which case the page could be deleted and re-created blank.
The latter has been done after a request from User WizardOfOz. Greetings, –Krinkletalk 12:45, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

Files marked no permission.

You have marked files of mine as lacking permission ( see File:Escutcheon of the House of Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov by Alexander Liptak.png for an example). I have created those images specifically for Wikipedia, and as such they are not hosted from my website. So, emailing a release of images from my site will accomplish nothing. They exist no where else on the Internet, save for those sites that copy Wikipedia's content blindly. So, being that the originals are on my laptop, is there another way to provide proof of release? Xanderliptak (talk) 02:49, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

Though there are several options, here are a the two I can recommend :
  • If the files have nothing to do with your website nor do or will appear on the site, then I'd not mention the site or it's terms at all. Just make it a | Source = {{Own work}} | Author = [[User:Xanderliptak|]] | Permission = {{Self|<license here>}}.
  • If they do appear on the site, then a quick e-mail to OTRS using a template (linking to the site and choosing the license) is good.
Krinkletalk 10:39, 4 April 2010 (UTC)
I removed the mention of the website. As for the language fields, I am adding simple descriptions, just pasting the template at this point so I can remember what languages I need add. Xanderliptak (talk) 22:09, 4 April 2010 (UTC)
I suggest you add the templates when you add the translation, not ahead of time. I won't your revert the edits but changes are someone else will. If you need to remember what to do, make a Notepad in your User-space (User-space: Any page within User:Yourname/here. For example User:Xanderliptak/Notepad.) Thanks in advance, –Krinkletalk 22:13, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

Met deze change heb je volgens mij het talen switchen zoals op {{KIT-license}} om zeep geholpen (hier werkt het nog wel). Zou je hier een blik op willen werpen? Multichill (talk) 12:21, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

Hm.. interessant. Je bedoeld het ajax-switchen (zonder pagina laden) ? –Krinkletalk 12:23, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
OK.
–Krinkletalk 12:29, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

above you see such empty pre-box because there is only a space. I fixed this now by using includeonly instead in the template. Thanks, –Krinkletalk 21:19, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

Patrolled/Autopatrolled

Regarding your recent revert of my changes to the Commons:Patrol page, if you take a look at Special:Log/rights admins are giving users the autopatrolled right each day on the basis that they make "good" edits. The policy page should probably be descriptive of what really happens, rather than proscriptive (what should happen) regardless of whether we have a good system for patrolling logged in users. I think there's a lot of confusion about the user rights involved and the patrolling system which is why admins have been giving out these user rights. Killiondude (talk) 18:30, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

Anoneditwarning

Hello, as you're the one who wrote the great Sitenotice translation script, I thought you might be able to help me with a problem that I recently encountered. As it's probably pretty clear, the big Anoneditwarning is rather user-unfriendly with all those languages and should be restricted to the language that the user speaks. I've reused your sitenotice translation code and adjusted it to use the navigator.language instead of the wgUserLanguage, but it didn't work. Would you be able to take a look at the source and fix it? As I'm not a Javascript expert, there might be better variants of doing so. Thanks, --The Evil IP address (talk) 18:22, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I'am new to wiki commons and I want to upload some of images taken from my camera but I have two concerns --

1) How to add metadata in image description,I want to add but I dont know how to...

2) How to view the galary of images uploaded by me?

Can u help ?.thanks-- Last Emperor (talk) 10:51, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

Hi Last Emperor,
You can see a gallery of all your uploads here (currently empty as you've not uploaded yet).
Meta data can be added in two ways. Depending on what you mean I'll give you two answer:
  • "EXIF" data is metadata contained within the file that comes from your digital camera, this contains data such as the camerabrand, shooting date and time and other information. See also EXIF on Wikipedia.
  • If you mean the information shown below the image, you can use the {{Information}} template for that. Below some short info:
== {{int:filedesc}} ==
{{Information
| Description    = {{en|1= Description in English here}}
| Date = YYYY-MM-DD (Date here in that format, like 2009-02-27)
| Source         = Where does it come from ? Or if your own work type {{own}}
| Author         = Your username and/or realname
| Permission = Leave empty unless there is a special statement required by the source
| other_versions =
}}

== {{int:license-header}} ==
Choose a license :-)
Since Commons is international, we have several translation templates. In most cases those appear within {{ and }} characters.
See Commons:First steps => Commons:First steps/License selection. –Krinkletalk 11:18, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

Hi krinkle, I uploaded images here, can you plz check if I did everything allright ? thanks-- Last Emperor (talk) 06:17, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

Hi Last Emperor,
It looks very good. It is certainly not wrong. There are two things I'd like to say tho:
1) Note the date in the YYYY-MM-DD format, this way it will be recognized by the software and translated automaticly
2) The == Source: ==-heading was not needed, since it is already in the {{Information| Source= -part.
I've done one for you as example [http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Green_farms_of_Jats_in_Haryana.jpg&diff=next&oldid=38453238 here.

Notiz

–Krinkletalk 15:22, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
