Photograph date category[edit]

Just a quick note — thank you for adding the date category, but actually it's not needed. The Taken on template automatically adds the category; see the page before you added it. But thanks a lot for using this system; the lack of a date category in most of our images I consider a real weakness, and the more images that use them, the better. the 307 of 308 portuguese municipalities (concelhos) have not "Municipality" in the title, why you made the move? I think ther is no reason for that and should be reverted. Abraço --JotaCartas (talk) 16:37, 2 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Taken on ...[edit]

Hi Kolforn!

You changed in about 40 of my photos the xxx to xxx. Could you explain me, why?

Request[edit]

Kolforn, for the future could you please set own for the source in information template instead of Self-made image? The already uploaded photos will be edited by me. -Arnd (talk) 11:51, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Transport catogorys[edit]

I do not wish to engage in a edit war with you, So in good faith can you explain why you wish to categorize a Bridge as a form of transport when it is quiet clearly a structure, all be it to carry some form of transport. You could say the same about a boardwalk or a staircase but they are structures built to facilitate Transport. Lets not fall out over this I'm sure we can come to some sort of consensus. Kolforn (talk) 19:23, 23 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have asked for clarification from administrators noticeboard as you are unable to work with me and resort to needless sarcasm, which is not done in good faith and helps no one. Kolforn (talk)

Another request[edit]

Hi Kolforn, I am very sorry, but I take the liberty of asking you to replace the flag in your template with a "non-animated image". The reason is that .. for me .. animated GIFs are very disturbing of the attention we need/want to give to the relevant text. Regards --JotaCartas (talk) 18:03, 9 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kolforn, this is actually Lasiommata megera. --LamBoet (talk) 14:34, 31 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

About a year ago, I was chewed out for not using Taken on, so I started using it. Today you made this edit (and similar ones on several dozen photos I recently uploaded), removing that and putting the photo in a more specific Category:United States photographs taken on 2017-11-10. So what is considered correct here? I try to comply to community standards, but it is difficult if they keep silently changing.

You may well know more than me. Was a decision made to deprecate Taken on? - Jmabel ! talk 16:25, 14 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Date format problems[edit]

Hi. I notice you have been removing just the curly brackets from the "Taken on" and "According to EXIF data" templates on a number of image files (e.g. here). I don't know if you are aware, but this breaks the internationalizing function of the date parameter which displays dates entered in the format YYYY-MM-DD into the appropriate format corresponding to individual users' language preference settings. In future, if you wish to remove "Taken on" or "According to EXIF data" templates, could you please remove them entirely? Also, would it be possible for you to go back and fix the dates in the other files you have changed so far? Many thanks. --DAJF (talk) 04:50, 21 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Date templates[edit]

Hello! Sorry for bothering you... Do you know how to create a new template for another country or who can do that? I'm talking about template used for instance here: Category:March 2016 Thailand photographs. There are templates for some countries, but there aren't for others, like Myanmar, Malaysia or my country - Poland. Do you know something about this issue? --Halavar (talk) 13:16, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Halavar
There is a category for Poland here 1. Once you have added the date category you require you then have to create the category with this 2 hope this helps. I have also set up the day date category for your thailand image that you uploaded here 3

You've placed some photos in this category when this is the edit date or the upload date. Please check the EXIF, which should show the date the photograph was actually taken. Cheers. Rodhullandemu (talk) 16:39, 11 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I'm curious about the licence on this file. You've indicated that it's derived from File:The Sandcliff Hotel - west facade detail - geograph.org.uk - 791348.jpg (though you linked to the copy on Geograph), which is licensed under with a required credit to Evelyn Simak. However, your picture is licensed under plain Attribution without any attribution to Evelyn Simak required. How so? --bjh21 (talk) 20:46, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kolforn, ok i will run my bot soon to update the date all your photos accordingly. --Arnd (talk) 11:57, 26 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I see that you've added Attribution to File:St Andrew, East Runton, Norfolk - geograph.org.uk - 314752.jpg, with a required attribution to you. May I ask why? Is this intended to be an alternative to the CC BY-SA 2.0 with attribution to John Salmon? --bjh21 (talk) 12:03, 4 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, what is the added value of such categories? Is there any consensus for their mass creating and adding? For my part, I don't want such categories for my uploads. "Tracks are for trains" template is misplaced: not all railway photos show tracks. --A.Savin 06:22, 7 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello A.Savin. I did not create the original category for this I’m just adding it were relevant. Some times the day date category become so enlarged that a category just for a particular subject could prove to be very useful. As for the templat. Surely you cant object to a gentle reminder, especially for the young who may be interested in photographing trains. Canada photographs[edit]

Hi, thank you for categorizing and organizing photo uploads by location. Wondering what your process is. Are you creating the yyyy-mm-dd category manually or do you have a script that takes care of it?

I can start categorizing my uploads myself but thought the process of creating a new category for a few images only might not be worth the time/effort: 20190931 has 2 photos, 20190906 has 4, 20190910 has 3 (and all are my uploads).

Hi Sikander, I use the template Date= Taken on|2019-09-12|location=Canada, with braces ({{) at either end, and alter the date accordingly and then create the Day/date/country category using, Canada photographs taken on navbox|2019|09|12, with braces ({{) at either end, and once again altering the date accordingly. Hope this is of Help. Kolforn (talk) 13:11, 12 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Bridges in Norfolk, England, photographed in July 2007 has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

I'm not listing each category but it's there on the page. Just a little confused as it seems keep tracking of photographs of bridges by month or by counties in England is a bit odd. Perhaps by year and then by particular bridge? -- Ricky81682 (talk) 06:59, 21 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Bird categories[edit]

Hi Kolforn - a couple of points about bird (and other flora & fauna) categories: (1) please stick to the long-established standard format, using only the scientific name (thus: Category:Motacilla cinerea in the United Kingdom as I have now renamed it), and not the English name, and (2) don't create huge numbers of subcategories each with only very few files in. The object of categories is to make files findable; this is not accomplished by having each file in a separate category. It was reasonable to create nation subcategories for Category:Motacilla cinerea, as this category has over the single page limit of 200 files, but not helpful at all to create further subdivisions by English counties, as there are far below 200 files in Category:Motacilla cinerea in the United Kingdom. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 00:34, 4 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Your point that the object of categories is to make files findable is fine but I think you will find that if a person is trying to find a category containing images of a Grey wagtail most would not know the scientific name and would not know Motacilla cinerea. I only use the English name followed by the scientific name in brackets when the category specific to England or English counties Kolforn (talk) 06:29, 4 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That is a scheme I haven't seen in use elsewhere at Commons. I am supposed to find Category:Turku Market Square although I as a local call the place "Åbo salutorg". Would you find Motacilla cinereas in Lapland if the category were called Virtavästäräkkejä Lapissa? Not everybody takes photos only in their home country, or searches only for photos from there. It is usually easy to find the scientific name, but vulgar names may vary by region, and non-native speakers may have big trouble making any sense of that. (I don't find the subcategories you talk about, but I suppose that isn't important.) –LPfi (talk) 16:06, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Jardim do Largo dos Chorões, Monchique[edit]

Greetings, Kolforn. In 2015 you have created the category Jardim do Largo dos Chorões, Monchique, and while that name really comes up in a few Google searches, in the official website of the Monchique town hall it is called Parque Urbano (Urban Park). Do you mind if I change the name of the category to Parque Urbano de Monchique? Best regards, -- Ajpvalente (talk) 09:38, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ajpvalente
I have no problem with you changing the name. Kolforn (talk) 11:00, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Kolforn: since you were the uploader of this file, is that the company related to him? If positive, a Category:John Laing Group seems appropriate. Thank you foryour time. Lotje (talk) 13:48, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Date categories[edit]

Hi Kolforn. I've seen you've made a fair few categories along the lines of Buildings in Cornwall photographed in August 2022 and I wonder if that isn't slightly overcategorising? I think by going so specific on the date it has the potential to disrupt some of the other categories that would be used, especially the general ones along the lines of August 2022 in Cornwall, which are useful catch-alls (and which start to lose utility when not catch-all categories).

Plus, I think having buildings by month categories might encourage somewhat overzealous categorisation and make finding media on Commons that much more complicated, especially when the categories only end up having a few files. There's also the problem that the idea of a building itself is a slightly blurred line. All in all, I think it would be much more useful for us to focus on the buildings by year categories which, in my opinion, could be much more useful - that's what I'm going to be working on for Cornwall. With that in mind, I'd appreciate if you held off from making any more monthly categories for Cornwall so we don't end up crossing wires. Of course, I'd be interested to hear if you disagree. Thanks and happy editing, Gazamp (talk) 20:05, 7 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your work categorising Geograph pictures. Lately you've been adding Category:Images from Geograph Britain and Ireland to some of them (e.g. here). This is unnecessary because Geograph and Also geograph add that category automatically. It's also harmful because it overrides the sort key set by those templates, meaning that the files appear out of order in the category. This stops tools like Geograph Update Bot finding Geograph files by their ID. Please could you stop adding this category? I undid a bunch of these additions last weekend, but it seems like they weren't a one-off error. --bjh21 (talk) 13:51, 29 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Gauging Stations in the United Kingdom[edit]

Gauging Station signage

Whilst carrying out some tidying-up of the Category:Gauging stations in the United Kingdom I noticed the category branch Category:Water gauges stations which includes Category:Water gauges stations in the United Kingdom and Category:Water gauges stations in Lincolnshire etc., created by your good self in 2021.

The problem is that the naming doesn't seem correct, it should be Gauging stations not Water gauges stations as per the National River Flow Archive website. It is not the biggest problem in the world, but I am hoping you will be happy for me to move or rename these categories, so that it fits with the existing Category:Gauging stations in the United Kingdom.
