Little Question

Hi,

You deleted 2 of my pictures and I do not know why. Pierre Sougné, the photograph, sent you a mail in June 21st (address : permissions-commons-fr@wikimedia.org) allowing me to use it. I don't know how it works between France and you. Could you tell me why those picture were deleted.

Thank you for getting back to me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Virginie59 (talk • contribs) 2013-06-24T09:37:49‎ (UTC)

Hi, I cannot check that email, bcause I'm not an OTRS-volounteer. I'm just an admin looking for images without a license :) I've not undeleted all 4 (not 2) files and tagged them as {{OTRS pending}} - example - which will prevent deletion as minium of 30 days or until the OTRS cases will be closed as valid or invalid. Please try to do such edits yourself if have have similar cases in future. regards --JuTa 20:07, 24 June 2013 (UTC)

Changing License.

Hi. How do I technically update a license for a photo? thnx,Ron. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ronkinderz (talk • contribs) 2013-06-24T18:51:17‎ (UTC)

Hi, ust edit the decription pages of the images in question like you did it here. But for most of "your" images I don't see a valid license - compare Commons:Copyright tags. The old ones may apply for {{PD-Israel}}. But you should state when they have been made, and best who made them too. For the newer ones you would need to find out the original photographers and ask them if they willing to release the photos under a free license. Then they have to send an email to the commons support team - see Commons:OTRS. regards. --JuTa 20:15, 24 June 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for informing me about the picture I uploaded, but if you can, delete it, because in any case would not use it. Nickelmax (Talk) 24/06/2013 19: 42 UTC -3

Hello JuTa,

I forwarded E-Mails to <permissions-commons@wikimedia.org> from the photographer the same time as I upload pictures. PLease check my E-Mails. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you very much,

Hi, I cannot check that email, because I'm not an OTRS-volounteer. I'm just an admin looking for images without a license :) But I now changed the problem tag to {{OTRS pending}}. This will prevent the deletion of the files for a minimum of 30 days or until the OTRS case is solved. If it takes too long you could ask the volounteers on Commons:OTRS noticeboard, but pls. be patient as there is normaly a huge backlog. regards --JuTa 19:38, 25 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi JuTa. I've upload a new file for File:Sanskrtam devanagari javanese.png, but the image did not change, even after I purged it several times. In my user's upload however, the image is correct. Is this because browser cache? Alteaven (talk) 15:08, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

It looks like, yes. For me its displaying OK. --JuTa 16:08, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

No offense.

I obtain this file making a screenshoot of the episode Jewpacabra of the South Park series. Is a possible copyright violation? This picture is similar to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:SP-S16E04-Jewpacabra.jpg — Preceding unsigned comment added by CStaff (talk • contribs) 2013-06-25T21:04:42‎ (UTC)

Yes it is a copyright violation, because you dont own the copyright of the South Park series. On english wikipedia Fair use is accepted on commons not, see Commons:Fair use. regards. --JuTa 21:12, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
Thanks JuTa. Now i know the reason. Can i upload images that was drawn by myself but are based on a series's character? --201.220.215.11 13:13, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
Normally no, because this would be a derivate work of the copyrighted character. See espacially first point here. regards. --JuTa 19:45, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

Images

How is the copyright not clear?

are all the official state portraits of state officials. I listed the url where I got them from the Texas State Legislature.

Is derivative. I only used images from wikipedia and I went back and posted links to them all, their authors, and their copyrights. What else can I do? — Preceding unsigned comment added by RedRaiderApache (talk • contribs) 2013-06-27T03:56:25‎ (UTC)

Hi, I saw for the first 4 images you set a {{PD-because}} template, which is IMHO not correct. Its true that UD govermental work ist public domain, but this applies not, as far as I know, for works of the inividual US states like Texas. I couldnt find an appropiate license tmplate for govrmental Texas works. The source page http://www.txcc.org/featured-members states Copyright 2008 - Texas Conservative Coalition at the bottom. Thats the reason i will now mark them as no permissoion. You may like to ask on Commons:Helpdesk for these. Perhaps I'm missing something in this case. regards. --JuTa 19:17, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
For the latest one. Somebody else corrected it by listing the licenses of the source images. I later just removed double listed licenses, regards --JuTa 19:31, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but I can't do very much in this case. The image never had a license which is required on commons - compare Commons:Licensing. I cannot find any inication for a free license on the given source - http://www.geo.uu.nl/fg/palaeogeography/data/geology/ICFS.pdf - either. You may try to raise an Commons:Undeletion request but I don't see a big chance for success. regards--JuTa 21:38, 28 June 2013 (UTC)

File:Sample Adjisaka.png

Hi JuTa~

Could you restore File:Sample Adjisaka.png? I will update the license with PD-Font, since I haven't asked the author, which I suspect speak Javanese while I don't. Can that license be used for this image? Alteaven (talk) 23:16, 28 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi, as we discussed here this font seems to be copyright protected. I don't like to undelete it. You may try an Commons:Undeletion request for it. Perhaps I'm missing something here. regards --JuTa 11:48, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
Wait, what about "The raster rendering of a font (or typeface) is not subject to copyright in the U.S., and therefore is in the public domain. It may be copyrighted in other countries (see intellectual property of typefaces on Wikipedia). You should use PD-font in this case."? Anyway, since you said that it IS copyrighted, can I temporarily use PD-font while I look for the appropriate license? Alteaven (talk) 13:02, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
As I said: try to raise an Commons:Undeletion request. In my eyes its not undeletable, but other admin might have a differnt view. --JuTa 13:04, 29 June 2013 (UTC)

If you can, please try to mark some of the images in this category. I have to sign out now as its almost 2 AM in Canada. Best Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 09:42, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads-up. I inadvertently omitted the photo caption for the image in question which states clearly: "Japanese hovercraft landing in Southern California. Department of Defense photo." I told you

Those maps were PD. Just allowing them to be deleted and continuing to place other assets in jeopardy is negligent. When you can keep up with the work generated by your tagging, then, and only then, should you be tagging more images. Rich Farmbrough, 02:38 1 July 2013 (GMT).

Worse still it seems you deleted them yourself. Rich Farmbrough, 03:19 1 July 2013 (GMT).
what is going on JuTa ? Penyulap 17:14, 1 July 2013 (UTC)
Well, I see you got help by another admin inbetween who undeleted the files. I'm still not convinced that the licensing, source ... is OK, because even the original lavtian images dos not state where the images came from, but when they will get undeleted anyhow, I might change the description pages like the the other when I find more in Category:Media without a license: needs history check. If you try to search such images yourself and "correct" them I will proparbly never find or touch them. For the future, consider to use the commonshelper in similar cases, then the source, licenses and so on should be clearer and closer to the original. regards. --JuTa 17:55, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

Believe me that U Wirathu's photo will NOT make any problems to Wikipedia, Wiki Commons and everyone (including you and me).

Dear JuTa,
Thank you for your reminding me to add License and tag. But I don't know the place of adding license and tag about Ashin Wirathu.jpg. Then, I don't know the place to :add sufficient information about Ashin Wirathu.jpg.
Actually, I got this photo from one of pupils of U Wirathu. U Wirathu and his followers shared his photo to many Burmese Buddhist people who attended U Wirathu's :Buddhist Ceremony. Later U Wirathu uploaded his photo for public in his own Facebook page.
I scanned U Wirathu's photo and I donated the photo to Wiki Commons. I want to say that many Burmese people have his photo in hand because U Wirathu has shared the photo already.
Please help me to add License, tag and sufficient information for Ashin Wirathu.jpg! I'm researching because of my hobby. Researching is my hobby!!
Please you trust me that the photo will not make any problems to Wikipedia, Wiki Commons and everyone (including you and me).
Sincerely yours,

--Burmeseprincess (talk) 13:02, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi, on the source for File:Ashin Wirathu.JPG [1] I cannot find any statement for a free license - compare Commons:Licensing an Commons:Copyright tags - which makes th images "all right reserved" and not useable for commons. The only way I see, that you try to contact the original fotografer and ask him if he is willing to release this image under a free license. Details for this procedure can be found on Commons:OTRS. A recommended license is {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}}. The fotogafer has to send a releasing email to the commons support team. Once this is done you better put {{OTRS pending}} onto the decription page. If you have any problems or questions don't hestigate to ask me (or on Commons:Help desk). regards. --JuTa 18:18, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

I don't understand anything. :)

You've said that I should give a permission from the person that has the licence of this http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Young_Chris_Martin.jpg photo. I've found this photo on http://liveisfullofsurprises.tumblr.com/post/26165156854/awww-young-chris-martin website. Can you explain me, in an easy way if possible, what do I need to do? :) Nikola (Nikola) 14:25, 1 July 2013‎

Hi,you have to try to contact the fotografer or copyright holder and ask him if he is willing to release the image under an free license. On http://liveisfullofsurprises.tumblr.com/post/26165156854/awww-young-chris-martin there is a button "ask me anything". You might try this. He/She has to send a releasing mail to the commons support team - see Commons:OTRS. A recommended license is {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}}. Once the mail has been send, you better put the template {{OTRS pending}} onto the description page, which will prevent deletion for about 30 days. If you have any further question, don't hestigate to ask me. regards. --JuTa 18:37, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

Hello!

I have added Template:PD-textlogo and Template:Trademarked on the file's page. As you might have already noticed, legal stuff is really not one of my virtues, so, devoid of knowledge of law as I am, this seems enough to me. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I've mostly made this thing myself, vectorization can really be a PITA, so I really would be happy if this stays on the Wikimedia Commons. Thanks in advance and sorry if I removed something important on the file's page. --Diablo-fan (talk) 17:45, 3 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi JuTa, the photographer of the pictures of Maria Krönung (Zürich-Witikon) has sent the license to commons some days ago. Unfortunately the warning, that the pictures could be canceled, hasn't disappeared. Could you please help me, that the pictures become a safe status? Thanks --Charly Bernasconi (talk) 05:43, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi, please be patient. The oTRS volounteers are very bus normaly and there is a huge backlog. it can takes weeks before they start working on an item. Thats the reason why the template {{OTRS pending}} prevents deletion for minimum of a month. regards --JuTa 07:11, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
Hi, thanks for your answer. But today one of the four pictures was already automatically erased. Can you retract it? Thanks --Charly Bernasconi (talk) 08:36, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
I now undeleted File:Maria Krönung Witikon Lichtführung.tif and set the {{OTRS pending}} tag. regards. --JuTa 19:43, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

Have you seen Category:Pictures from Oberwolfach Photo Collection or the official website copyright terms which states:

The Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach gGmbH (MFO) owns the copyright to most of the images used on this website. Those images labelled with "Copyright: MFO" can be used on the terms of the Creative Commons License Attribution-Share Alike 2.0 Germany.

.

Given the backlog size is 938 images to be reviewed I do not think it is doing any good to mark another image as unreviewed. Solomon7968 (talk) 08:57, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

Hallo JuTa!

I think I made a small mistake. The image Simeon I of Bulgaria.jpg was gifted to the Bulgarian presidency, wnere the picture still resides,by the author. The Presidency has put it in the public domain and since has appeared in history and art textbooks, news articles, magazines and such, but when uploading the image I didn't specify it was in the public domain...how can I edit my mistake? Thanks!

Hi, when I understand the description correctly bg:vДимитър Гюдженов is the painter of this painting, who died in 1979. This makes the painting copyright protected until 2050 (lifetime +70 years). In this case there is no valid license tag for this on commons, I'm afraid. regards --JuTa 16:01, 7 July 2013 (UTC)

Hello. Yes, mister Gudjenov did create the portrait, alogn with Vasil Zlatarski, a historian who helped in recreating tha authentic costume. The painting was then, not given to, but purchased by the Presidency, along with the rights to it and has been relieced in the public domain. A smaller resolution image File:Simeon the Great 864 - 927,Bulgarian emperator 893-927.jpg alredy exists in the commons category for Simeon I! If one is a lawsuit waiting to happen and must be delieted, why has the other stayed untouched for over a year? Thanks for the help :D --Алигиери
Hi, when you hav a link or similar that proved that the copyright holder put it into public domain, pls. provide it here or on the image description page. The licensing for the other image seems to be wrong. I consider to request it for deletion as well. But firstly I wait for your answerback. regards. --JuTa 16:39, 7 July 2013 (UTC)
Hi. Don't hurry with the requests just yet! I have just done something rather bould (or incredibly stupid) - I wrote an E-mail to the Presidency's Public relations office, asking for information regarding the picture's copyright. Waiting to hear back. Promise to keep in touch. :) -- Алигиери

Hi, its good to have a source for that image, but that does not realy help with the license problem. The source site states Copyright© 2nd Summer Youth Olympic Games (Nanjing 2014) at the bottom. The "comic character" looks copyright protected as well. So I don't see a good chance that this image can be kept here on commons. regards. --JuTa 20:37, 7 July 2013 (UTC)

You said the work needs copyright information. I could not figure out how to provide, which is why I don't usually upload directly to commons; I saw no option to say that this is a public domain photo. It is public domain because the original image was published in 1914 in the book "The Guitar and Mandolin" by Philip J. Bone. The original book comes from a books labeled in the public domain <http://archive.org/details/guitarmandolinbi00bone>. I don't know how to fix this. Will you help, please?Jacqke (talk) 18:18, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi, according this As with the rest of the European Union, the basic copyright term in the United Kingdom is life of the author plus 70 years. (The author must be a natural person and cannot be a corporation.) So: we need to know who designed/wrote this and when did he/they died to decide if the image is in the pulic domain. But if this work was firstly published in the United States the template {{PD-1923}} might fit here. regards. --JuTa 21:08, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

Copyright status of File:SP nl logo 2006.png

Hi,

You tagged File:SP nl logo 2006.png as having insufficient copyright information. According to its source, it is vrij van rechten, which means "free of (copy)right". I.e. the picture is almost in the public domain, the only restriction being that attribution has to be given. Is there a tag that expresses this? (It's a very common Dutch phrase for publicity photos and the like.)

TIA, Qwertyus (talk) 17:33, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

Never mind, I've used the attribution tag which seems to cover this. Qwertyus (talk) 17:39, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
Well, when I click on the source I get a complete empty page. Thats different for you? --JuTa 17:42, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
Same here, but I added a link to the same page on web.archive.org which shows the image and the relevant text. Qwertyus (talk) 09:20, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

Slocan City pic

I don't get it, I matched what the license on the original said, or thought I did, such that File:Central British Columbia Series 13 (HS85-10-38108) SlocanCity.jpg and File:Central British Columbia Series 13 (HS85-10-38108).jpg are the same image, or rather one is part of the other.....what did I do wrong? I also tried to do that for another item that I cropped the frame off of just now, see the Canadian collection from the British Library talkpage......the only thing *I* did to the Slocan City image is not crop it, I can't see "self" as a license tag....Skookum1 (talk) 05:35, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

Then please apply the same license as in the original which is {{PD-two|PD-Canada-photo|PD-1923}} in this case and remove the {{Remove this line and insert a license instead|year=2013|month=07|day=11}}. regards --JuTa 07:27, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

Hey, why were File:Te Pikinga.jpg and File:Te Rei Hanataua.jpg deleted? I thought I put a PD-New Zealand on them? Haminoon (talk) 08:42, 13 July 2013 (UTC)

You are right, I missed that, because you left the {{Remove this line and insert a license instead|year=2013|month=07|day=04}} on the page. I undeleted them and corrected the decription pages. But I find it hard to believe that the fotos were made in 1834 (or 1860) or earlier. They looking more like early 1900th. --JuTa 08:50, 13 July 2013 (UTC)
Apologies for not removing that line - I'll make sure I add the correct licence straight away next time. I have no explanation for the surprisingly high quality of the images - I'll ask the photo expert on Monday. Haminoon (talk) 09:14, 13 July 2013 (UTC)
