inscription of "Kubota Garden 20 A.jpg"

Hello, Jmabel. I'm QBay in Japan. I find your photo of image:Kubota Garden 20 A.jpg by chance. The inscription is "よさこい峠" (yosakoi touge). "よさこい" is a famous folk-song in Kochi-pref. in Japan and/or dance with the music(cf en:yosakoi). "峠" means a peak of a mountain road. This Kanji charcter consists of "山", "上" and "下". They represent "monuntain", "up" and "down", respectively. This Kanji character is used only in Japan, not in China. Regards! --汲平 09:29, 20 December 2007 (UTC) (ja:利用者:汲平)

Images of undefined machine

Hello Jmabel!

Your undefined machine images show a three axis (XYZ) milling or grinding machine. No picture of a machine tool available? --WikipediaMaster 16:29, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I don't understand your question. But I will now caption according to your information. - Jmabel | talk 18:00, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
Hi Jmabel, your pictures show the machine, but there is no tool in the machining head, so it is difficult to identify if it is a grinding or milling machine, so the question is, if there were some tools with the machine that would allow to identify the exact type. --WikipediaMaster 18:05, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
I see. No. It was sitting there to be surplussed; what was there was what I photographed. I'm recategorizing under Category:Milling machine. If there are any further notes you consider worth adding to these, feel free. - Jmabel | talk 18:07, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
Ok, I have added the question grinding or milling machine in the german machinery portal discussion here, lets see if we are right. --WikipediaMaster 19:18, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
Vielen danke. Ich kann Deutsch lesen, aber nur ein Bischen sprechen oder schreiben. - Jmabel | talk 19:33, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Images by decade

Hi. I decided to start organizing New Orleans and Louisiana images by decade, eg Category:New Orleans in the 1900s etc. This seems to be working out well, and so I started tying them into United States by decade categories. Might you wish adopt something similar with Seattle/Washington images? Other thoughts or reccomendations? Thanks for your good work. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 06:36, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

I'm open to that. So far, I just distinguished before and after 1950. We have almost nothing between 1923 and 1993. I don't think it's that useful to distinguish the 1990s images from the 2000s images, but it might be useful to sort out 1890s, 1900s, etc. On the other hand, our largest trove of images was published 1900 and already has a category related to the source. In short, fine with me if someone wants to do this, not sure it's something I want to put time into. - Jmabel | talk 19:55, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
OK. I'll start some Washington State decade categories and tie them to the US decade categories. If you think it would be useful to subdivide the Washington decade categories for Seattle or other cities, do so if you wish. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 18:33, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
Go for it. I don't think we have very much in Washington outside of Seattle prior to the 1990s. I've added less than 20 such images myself (all circa 1900-1920) and I doubt that everyone else combined has done even that many. - Jmabel | talk 18:47, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
P.S.: For free images from the 1930s and 1940s, the WPA was taking lots of photos in the '30s, and there are probably some Department of War Information photos of whatever defense plant works were going on during WWII. Both are PD-USGov, and a fair amount of such stuff can be found by poking around memory.loc.gov. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 18:52, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
I mostly leave it to others to pull in images that are already online (though occasionally I do go after them). I'm mostly uploading my own photos and photos scanned from pre-1923 books. - Jmabel | talk 06:36, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Question

Hey, do you have any experience in getting flickr users to release their photos to public domain? I just wrote someone asking them too, but really know what steps have to be taken to make it acceptable for Commons. Cheers! Murderbike 02:11, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

If their images are not already appropriately licensed, then the simplest thing is to ask them to send a message to 'permissions-commons AT wikimedia DOT org'; ideally, they should also open an account on Commons, which lets us make the attribution clearer, because then the OTRS number can be placed on the talk page of that account. See User talk:Tweenet for an example of this (and see Image:Bunnygrunt at the Coney Island boardwalk.jpg for how you then indicate the permission when you upload). - Jmabel | talk 07:47, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

and/or

Hi there, I came across your Category:Hospitals or clinics by country, when I was about to create Category:Hospitals and clinics by country. I wondered what the reason is for "or" rather than "and". Shouldn't it follow the same model as Category:Universities and colleges, Category:Towns and villages in England, etc? (And I'd already created Category:Hospitals and clinics in Serbia). Perhaps reply to this at Category talk:Hospitals or clinics by country, so others can follow. Cheers, JackyR 16:22, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

I suspect this convention is inconsistent over the categories. That said, I was told some time back on the Community Portal that this is the preferred naming convention, since each subcategory would be a hospital or clinic, not a hospital and clinic. I believe that the idea is to retain an is-a relationship for subcategories. But I don't claim to be an expert on Commons' categorization. Anywhere it isn't a tangled mess, I try to follow the conventions of whoever got there first. - Jmabel | talk 22:41, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Category:Pinewood derby

I saw a request for the Category Pinewood Derby in wanted categories. This new category request was for images that you uploaded. I did a search and found that Category:Pinewood derby already exists. I changed the category on these images since it is the spelling used in the Wikipedia English article. Let me know if I missed something and that does not fix the situation. Their reason for deletion is "isysu". If this is an acronym, I don't know what it means. They do not appear to have created a corresponding deletion requests subpage. I have asked at COM:VP how I am supposed to proceed. - Jmabel | talk 17:47, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

Your VIC

Hi Jmabel, Thank you for taking your time to test nominate an image at COM:VIC to try it out. I appreciate that.

A few remarks about your nomination:

Please try to keep the scope as short and concise as possible. It seems like you have two scopes in mind. I suggest you pick one of them out and try out the nomination using that scope. If you would like to try and try to nominate the image in two different scopes just make a second nomination with the other scope (an image can be VI within several scopes). If you decide to try that, do select another subpage name for the second nomination, i.e., .../scope2-foo.jpg and manually edit the image parameter to, e.g., image=foo.jpg on the preloaded VIC nomination page.

For VICs the nominator, creator and uploader is not allowed to vote. The reason being that a VIC promotion can be done based on just a single support vote. This is different from what you may know from COM:FPC and w:WP:FPC but very similar to the more light-weight process used at COM:VIC. Currently, a light-weight voting process in the one we are going for as it is foreseen (or hoped) that the flow of VICs may be considerable and a more FPC-like process will be too resource demanding and inefficient.

Another reason for the light-weight voting process is that it is believed that reviewing a single VIC is typically more time-consuming that reviewing an FPC or QIC as the reviewer (ideally) shall actively look for competing material within the same scope, consider if the scope is of sufficient value to Wikimedia projects in the first place and last, but not least, consider if the image is a good and representative illustration of the scope. The latter may require some studying of, e.g., related Wikipedia articles if you are not already a domain expert.

I don't know why this ended up being such a long comment... -- Slaunger 07:54, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Sorry to spam you again ;-), but I just wanted to let you know that I have tried to elaborate a little on what is supposed to go in the 'most_valued_image_of=' parameter in the helper template Template:VIC-add-nomination, which is shown on top of a preloaded VIC nomination page. Do you think the description is sufficiently instructive and clear? -- Slaunger 09:00, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
Yes, that is much clearer. - Jmabel | talk 17:33, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Valued images evaluation

Dear Jmabel,

This is a standard message to the 18 different users who so far have been involved in testing Valued images candidates as either a nominator, reviewer or project editor. Help needed with the Valued images project

As you may have seen, this project is going live for nominations on 1 June, 2008 at 0:00 UTC. Before then, there are a few things to be finished off, and any help you can give will be welcome. The latest discussion is at Commons talk:Valued images candidates#Open action items for Valued images.

When the project launches publicly on 1 June, it will need reviewers who are able to jump in quickly and provide prompt feedback. During those critical first few weeks it will be important to have a decent number of reviewers who are prepared to put in the effort to make sure the first nominations are well-reviewed, as that will set the standard for the future.

Would you help, please, with the final tasks now, and also pledge your help with some reviewing on 1 June and thereafter? --MichaelMaggs 17:08, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

To be honest, while I decided to try it out, I didn't find it particularly interesting. I think I'd rather continue to focus on adding images rather than judging them. - Jmabel ! talk 17:33, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Valued images test review phase has ended

Dear Jmabel

Thank you for participating in the development of the Valued images project by test nominating one or more candidates. We have used the input from the test reviews to fine-tune the guidelines, process and templates used, hereby hopefully improving the setup.

We have now decided that on June 1, 2008 at 0:00 (UTC), the valued image project will be opened for official nominations. To get ready for the grand opening, we will close down the last remaining open test candidates in a few hours, such that the candidates list pages are emptied and ready.

Since there has been a certain amount of instruction creep over the course of the test review pahse, we have decided that all promoted and declined candidates from the test review phase will be reset to the so-called "undecided" state prior to the opening. This means that test valued image candidate review pages all end up in Category:Undecided valued images candidates and the test sets end up in Category:Undecided valued image set candidates.

The votes from the original test review will be archived in a previous reviews subpage and reset upon renomination.

Although all nominations will be reset, you, as a test nominator, will still have the advantage that each candidate can be re-nominated beginning June 1 0:00 UTC. The votes from the original test review will be archived in a previous reviews subpage and reset upon renomination. Click on the links to the aforementioned categories for instruction on how to renominate.

In addition, the project has decided to re-nominate all candidates, which were test promoted, unless you tell us not to do so on my talk page. Also, do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or problems relating to valued images.

I hope, you will also take part in the project once it goes on the air, either as nominator, maintainer and/or reviewer.

Happy editing, -- Slaunger 21:57, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

VI seal

Thank you also for your message above. It is fair game to test a project and find out it in not that interesting for you. I suppose that means you would appreciate it, if we did not renominate your old brewery photo, once we go on the air (as we would do by default since it, in the end, was test promoted)? Cheers, -- Slaunger 21:57, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

You are perfectly welcome to renominate it; just don't expect my active participation. I have no problem at all with other people putting work into this but, much as with featured images, I don't think it is something I will work on. - Jmabel ! talk 06:35, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Seattle area images

Every time I find an interesting shot, you've got it already. Your coverage is AMAZING. :) rootology (T) 18:52, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, I've been working on it. Some that are definitely still needed:
  1. Things showing multi-modal transport (bikes on buses, cars on ferries, etc.)
  2. There must also be a lot to do on the light rail under construction, which I've barely touched.
  3. Way more remains to be done on the downtown waterfront, the Duwamish Valley, and the Ballard waterfront.
  4. Most neighborhoods. Seattle's residential architecture outstrips its commercial architecture, but we are still pretty light on the
  5. We're still weak south of downtown, where I've really only done Columbia City, Georgetown, White Center & Alki. There is a ton to do in West Seattle.
  6. Street fairs and the like are always worth doing more of. Other than Fremont, I think I've barely scratched the surface of these.
  7. People! There are a lot of famous people in town whose pictures I've never gotten.
  8. We're pretty weak on surrounding towns.
  9. I've done most historic buildings, but in general I've been weak on post-1970 architecture.

I'm sure there is a lot more I'm not thinking of offhand. - Jmabel ! talk 19:52, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

By the way, check this.
The fairs and festivals I was especially curious to go after ala Bite of Seattle (I already got the Critical Mass guys). I spend a decent amount of time near Salmon Bay, West Seattle (especially up around California/downtown and Alki), and the waterfront area, I just have to remember to bring my camera. I wonder how feasible it could be to get into the dock areas, at the massive cranes off the viaduct's south end? Wonder if we'd be detained as terrorists if we shot there... getting people would be interesting. I'm downtown weekly, I wonder if I were to bang off e-mails to say Nickles's and Sims's offices, if I'd be able to get in for 5-10 minutes quickly at lunch to grab photos. rootology (T) 04:09, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
It's possible to drive onto Harbor Island, and there is even one viewpoint there. The road through the industrial area is a bit too high traffic and high speed to be friendly for a bicycle, though, from what I've seen of it. I've already gotten a few good shots from other viewpoints: see for example:

but as you can see, there's really nothing photographed from within the Harbor Island part of the port. - Jmabel ! talk 07:02, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

Hey Jmabel, just wanted to say hi, met you at the Seattle meetup and I really admire your photograph work. Please, help me!

I want delete some files from commons, and User:O is doing an edit's war on my own files. Help, please! Help! Coronellian (talk) 04:40, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

I'm an ordinary user on Commons, I can't do anything for you that you can't do for yourself. You might try COM:VP; there might be a better venue, but I don't know what it would be. Unless this user is an administrator, however, they have no particular ability to delete your images, so unless there is a problem with your images they will presumably fail. - Jmabel ! talk 04:50, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

The problem with my images is that I want to delete it, and User:O simply delete the delete warning, but not the image. I though is my right on my ouwn work to delete it. The best option is not collaborate in a project that do not understand the law of copyrights Coronellian (talk) 19:16, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

No, actually, you don't have any right to delete an image simply because you uploaded it. If it was an image someone else created, and if it was appropriately licensed, it doesn't matter at all that you were the uploader. If it was an image you created yourself, then presumably when you uploaded it you selected some license. Once you've done that, you can't "take it back", just like you can't say to a charity "hey, that $50 I gave you last year, I want it back". If there is any problem with the image, you can propose deletion just like you could of anyone else's image.
I've successfully requested a few times that images I created be deleted: about half a dozen times because the images were low quality and I'd created a better image of the same subject and twice because someone depicted in an image - in both cases, a completely private citizen - requested that it not be used. The latter had no basis in law - in the United States, I'm free to photograph anyone in a public space and publish that photograph - but the photos were not of particularly high value, and in those circumstances Commons tends to honor the wishes of someone who was depicted.
You don't give any indication here of why you want the image deleted, so I don't have any further useful advice to give. - Jmabel ! talk 19:26, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

At the beganing of Viquipèdia (catalan Wikipedia) you said us we don't cite sources, and now you do not respect my right to delete my own work, must I go to the Sheriff, a lawyer, FBI? Coronellian (talk) 02:52, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

I have no idea why you are singling me out. I am not an administrator on the Commons. I am not the person who decided the policies you are objecting to. I've given you the advice I can give about how things work here, and you seem unhappy about it. Please take it up with the people who make the policies, not with the messenger.
You allude to remarks I made several years ago about articles not citing their sources. I don't remember the particular remarks but, yes, it was my experience at that time that when I looked up articles in the Catalan Wikipedia, there were generally no sources cited and one was left completely to one's own devices to decide whether there was any reason to trust the material. - Jmabel ! talk 03:00, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Organizing some images into this new category, feel free to change things, add/remove. I still do plan to do some work/addition of cites/info to the article back at en.wiki, at some point soon. Cheers, Cirt (talk) 09:27, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Shouldn't you be putting Category:Robert Christgau in Category:The Village Voice, rather than individual pictures of Christgau? - Jmabel ! talk 16:12, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Yes, you are correct, I had not noticed that, thank you. Cirt (talk) 16:19, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Sorry about that. I will stop that mistake I made in the past weeks and months immediately. ;=(

Steamer under construction

Steamer under construction, Seattle ca 1915

I was very glad you uploaded this image, it is one of the few if not the only one showing construction of a steel inland steamer from that time place and general date. The vessel shown is almost certainly the Tacoma a steel steamship placed in service in 1913. I almost put that in the item description, but I wanted to check my sources. I have a couple of books that show Tacoma under construction. Meanwhile, a provisional identification can be made by comparing photos in the UW digital libraries. I found this onewhich looks very similar espscially around the pilot house, but unfortunately is only a profile. Tacoma had two funnels and was very narrow, as is the vessel in the image you uploaded. My books at home have some good bow-on views of the Tacoma including the covered shipway where Tacoma was built, so these should allow a definitive identification. I was planning on writing an article on Tacoma but was deterred by the (previous) lack of good images. Thanks again for posting! Mtsmallwood (talk) 19:16, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

Sure does look like the same boat!

Victor (steamboat)
Virginia V
There may need to be some subcategorization within Puget Sound Mosquito Fleet and your initial decision to place the obviously large Tacoma outside of the Mosquito Fleet is well warranted. Generally I would understand smaller wooden vessels like the Victor (shown) to be part of the "Mosquito Fleet" core, and larger vessels, like Tacoma to be in a different class, maybe "coastal liners". But that will take some working out, since there were vessels like Eliza Anderson and George E. Starr that filled both roles (although not perhaps very well). (Sternwheelers astoundingly were taken from the sound up to St. Michael and the mouth of the Yukon!) On the other hand, I'm not aware that Tacoma was ever operated outside of Puget Sound. Should the subcategorization be in design, use, or some combination? Hard to say, because the history of the vessels doesn't fit so neatly together into a logical scheme. Since technically I am at work (ssshhhhh!) that will have to wait for a bit.Mtsmallwood (talk) 20:32, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
I would say "Mosquito Fleet" for anything from that era that never went out to the open ocean or up the Inside Passage. The Virginia V is considered "Mosquito Fleet", and it looks to be a comparably large vessel (of a somewhat different shape: broader in the beam). - Jmabel ! talk 20:54, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

Categories for steamboats

I didn't put much thought into the category structure, so please rearrange as you see fit. Some thoughts: A steamship is generally considered a much larger vessel than a steamboat. A steamship almost always refers to a vessel with at least some sort of ocean-going capability, whereas a steamboat would not regularly be used on the open seas, compared to steamboat which would be a name used for vessels restricted to vessels used on rivers, lakes, and protected coastal waters.

Probably the main category structure should be split between steamships, which should be categorized by country of first origin, and steamboats, which, being not readily capable of relocation across oceans, can be broken down into geographic areas of operation. Western North America makes some since because vessels and personnel were repeatedly crossing the border with Canada. Other areas could be Great Lakes Steamboats, Hudson River Steamboats, etc. (I have a lot of materials for these but haven't had time to upload them.)

So the category structure could be changed to something like steamships-->steamships of the United States and steamboats-->steamboats of North America-->steamboats of western North America. A guide for what is a steamboat and what is a steamship could be posted in the category heading, with the idea that the distinction has a lot of gray areas. Mtsmallwood (talk) 03:23, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

MV Westward

What about something like MV Westward? I'd call it a steamboat, not a steamship, but it was built for doing the Inside Passage to Alaska and it recently circumnavitaged the Pacific.

I really don't feel, though, that I have the expertise to sort out the categories in this area. - Jmabel ! talk 06:59, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

Category:Black Panthers

Joe, I quite agree that I was inaccurate in putting Category: Black Panthers under Category:African American politicians. I am trying to make Category:African Americans more useful by putting images and subcategories into logical subcategories. But probably Black Panthers is best returned toCategory:African Americans. What do you think?

On a related issue, I just started categorizing your pictures of Joy Williamson into Category:African American educators. She should probably be under Category:African American scholars too. The best way might be to create her own category and put all her images into that. I wonder if 6 pictures of varying quality (and 9 files) of one person at one event is too much? Can we perhaps pick the best ones? My vote would be for keeping the ones that didn't need color correction, but I haven't examined them closely. Thanks! Hello, I was wondering whether you have the original images for the panroama. Right now, it looks kind of sloppy (no offence), but the Graphic Lab can make it better. If you have the originals, please upload them. Thank you!

No time to id these right now but I'll get round to it. Lots more I hope, some look very useful and they're all nice pics. Many thanks Best wishes from Ireland Robert aka Notafly (talk) 08:29, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

Glad they look useful. As I've been uploading, I notice that, sad to say, about 10% have focus problems (my camera has no true manual focus mode, and I think it was occasionally fooled by the glass), but, yes, most of them seem to have worked. - Jmabel ! talk 15:38, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
