Hello Jeff, wondering if you or someone being very familiar with copyright on the German Wikipedia could help me. I'dd like to add some images of ̼Sterling Hayden to some articles on the German Wikipedia. Only, there was (back in 2017) an anonymous user https://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Benutzerin_Diskussion:Lotje&diff=prev&oldid=172131348 who gave me a lecture. Since the contributor is anonymous, I prefer putting my question forward here. @Lotje: No, that is not correct about File:Hayden-Asphalt.jpg because the German language version of {{PD-US-not renewed}}, {{PD-US-not renewed/de}}, transcludes {{Geschützt}}. So if a Commons file description page contains {{PD-US-not renewed}}, please do not use the file within German-language Wikimedia projects, either. I have just transcluded {{Geschützt}} in the English language version of {{PD-US-not renewed}}, {{PD-US-not renewed/en}}, in this edit, for more clarity.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:56, 8 January 2023 (UTC)

It's a petty, that warning has been removed. I am surely not the only person struggling with these copyright issues. Someone not being familiar with all the regulations (there are much more not knows then knows) keeps having a hard time. That was a very clear warning. Sad to see it's gone now. Thanks Jeff, though I wouldn't know how to explain myself and telling what really needs to be done, being: making sure the file is not used on Wikipedias where that 70 years needs to be respected. Or, by preventing the file to be added to those Wikipedias, or, make a clear statement vy a template, so everyone, in every langauge is able to get the message (experience is the best teacher) :-) Lotje (talk) 11:50, 10 January 2023 (UTC)

Uploading question

Hi Jeff G. I'm wondering if you could help me with the uploading of this file. Even though it's watermarked, I fairly sure that it's OK for Commons as {{PD-US-no notice}} due to the lack of visible copyright notice on the back of the photo. I'd like to use the photo as a replacement for the non-free one currently being used in the main infobox of the article en:Pat Buttram. Ideally, it would be great if there was a way to upload the front and back of the photo as part of the same file and then create a crop; however, I'm not sure that's possible. if you scroll down the website host the photo you find larger versions and some information about the provenance of the photo. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:52, 20 January 2023 (UTC)

The licence of https://www.openstreetmap.org/ is CC-BY-SA 2.0, as it says on the page, so I updated my entries from 3.0 to 2.0. - Meister (talk) 21:53, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
@Sänger: The word "vandalism" implies malicious intent. It is more likely that Jeff accidentally overlooked the little icon on the maps-for-free page.
If I keep using VisualFileChange, surely someday I will make an embarrassing mistake that is difficult to fix without admin privileges. And I would want this to be a community where such mistakes are forgiven. TilmannR (talk) 00:15, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
You must be blind not to find the licences on that site. If he did just some flimsy look at the site and based on that extremely substandard research his mass deletion, or if he had some axe to grind with that side and maliciously is nearly irrelevant. To start such a mass deletion crusade you have to have at least some base in reality, this mass deletion spree had none whatsoever.

Have you seen those pictures? Were they as well just from MapsForFree? I can't find the deletion discussion page of those files.
I still wonder, why you didn't bother to click on the i for information button on that maps page, or looked in the bottom right corner, another place with licence information, before you started your mass deletion spree. @Sänger: No, I have not seen those images (which were probably relief maps including the Abhar River in Qazvin Plain). There were no discussions, those images were just deleted for lack of permission after a week. I had just woken up, had not yet drank a caffeinated beverage, and had missed the "i" (I will avoid that in the future).   • Jeff G... Look at the Commons:File_renaming rules for #Criterion 4: "Just because images share a category does not mean that they are part of a set. There are two scenarios that this criterion is designed for. First, certain complex templates (such as those that use BSicons or that display football kits) assume that the images used in them will follow a specific naming convention. Wikisource also uses a specific naming convention for the source files they transcribe. Second, files that form parts of a whole (such as scans from the same book or large images that are divided into smaller portions due to Commons’ upload size restriction) should follow the same naming convention so that they appear together, in order, in categories and lists."
