(talk page stalker) @Trademark (2018): read Commons:Licensing. If you still have questions, you can ask me on my talk page if an image you want to upload is acceptable or not. - Alexis Jazz 22:08, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: Thanks for trying, but that user is globally locked.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 22:18, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
His talk page said he was blocked for a week (and that was one week ago), but I see you are right. I don't see what his abuse on enwiki was (the block message doesn't explain anything) but there probably was a good reason. - Alexis Jazz 23:19, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: a checkuser block generally means sockpuppetry; in this case the user-page tag confirms that default hypothesis.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:45, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
@Odysseus1479: Thanks, now I found it as well: w:User:Trademark (2018). Usually there is a link to investigations also visible on the w:Special:Contributions/Trademark (2018) page but in this case there isn't. - Alexis Jazz 02:07, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

Copyright violations ?

Hi, Jeff G. Recently I've received your message titled "Copyright violations". However, unfortunately I did not understand exactly which files are the issue you pointing out. Please give a detailed explanation. --Clusternote (talk) 00:49, 4 May 2018 (UTC)

@Clusternote: File:Traktor Kontrol S4 - rear (2010-09-16 02.32.15 by ビッグアップジャパン).jpg, File:2009 Presidential Inauguration - Symbolism.jpg, and File:Triangle Park MTriangle Park Mural - Asheville, North Carolina (2013-11-12 20.14.35 by denise carbonell 11073903144).jpg in the past six months.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 02:03, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
Oh, these files were transferred several years ago from Flickr under Cc-by-2.0/Cc-by-sa-2.0 license, and these copyright violation were known recently.
  1. File:Traktor Kontrol S4 - rear (2010-09-16 02.32.15 by ビッグアップジャパン).jpg — Copyright washing of 1st media was not known until deletion request.
  2. File:2009 Presidential Inauguration - Symbolism.jpg — Copyright issue of contents of public screen at governmental event was not clear at all when I transferred it as sample of line-speaker setting.
  3. File:Triangle Park MTriangle Park Mural - Asheville, North Carolina (2013-11-12 20.14.35 by denise carbonell 11073903144).jpg — Copyright issue of graffiti by unknown artist seen as landscape on public place, was unclear when I transfarred it.
I've always tried to avoid these issue as far as I can ... However, I'm sorry about causing copyright violation issue due to my careless judgements in the past. --Clusternote (talk) 02:40, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
Thank you. I removed that section.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 11:28, 4 May 2018 (UTC)

FYI

FYI, FYI is usually said before providing some information. (like this) It can be a bit confusing when using it for a courtesy ping. Now that I know you use FYI for this I personally won't mind, but it can be confusing to others. - Alexis Jazz 19:40, 6 May 2018 (UTC)

@Alexis Jazz: Would you prefer "Please note." or "Please be aware of this."?   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 19:46, 6 May 2018 (UTC)
Seems also confusing to me. I would prefer "Courtesy ping (ping)" or maybe "Poking (ping)". Or just "(ping)" without any additional message. Personally I'm okay with whatever you choose, but you might confuse others with "FYI" or "be aware". "Be aware" sounds similar to beware so it could be misread to be more alerting than it's meant to be. - Alexis Jazz 21:01, 6 May 2018 (UTC)

hi jeff, I am writing to tell you that I have seen his news proposing the attempt to unlock, but before thinking about the request, I would like to ask you if it was possible to start the process of request and analysis for the files previously deleted, I I often apologize for his presence, and for this I apologize, but now that it seems that the wind has changed, I would ask if from now on before talking about unlocking it was possible to show the deleted files to the Commons: UNDEL for a probable restoration ?????--95.248.92.9 17:41, 7 May 2018 (UTC)

Quick question about OTRS versus Commons

Hi, I just placed a request on the OTRS Noticeboard, and while there I saw a helpful answer you gave to another editor about having deleted photos reinstated, which you said should happen automatically upon receipt of the permission letter--although it could take as much as 74 days. My question is you said "If the message was sent to the English language version of OTRS and the email has been properly received there the sender will receive an automatic reply with the ticket number. If the sender has not had a reply, please check that it was sent correctly and try again." I believe the permission letter was sent to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. Is that the correct address? Is there anything else I should know about this process? Thanks for your help. SteelersSuperBowl (talk) 11:32, 8 May 2018 (UTC)

@SteelersSuperBowl: Ticket:2018043010006165 has been received. For privacy, further communication about it will be handled in the OTRS system and via email.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 15:11, 8 May 2018 (UTC)

Hi, Jeff. Can you have a look at Commons:Deletion requests/File:LvR.jpg? Do you think it's feasible -and in that case can you do it- to cut the wine cup out of the pic and relax the uploader? Thanks. --E4024 (talk) 11:57, 8 May 2018 (UTC)

User cats

Hi. We have Category:JogiAsad and also the same name user. Is everything in order here? --E4024 (talk) 12:45, 10 May 2018 (UTC)

@E4024: Technically, user cats shouldn't be in the content tree per COM:USER. I made this edit to clarify.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 13:09, 10 May 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. What about adding cats -separately- to the user's personal images? --E4024 (talk) 13:16, 10 May 2018 (UTC)
@E4024: I don't think that's a problem.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 13:31, 10 May 2018 (UTC)
OK. I just don't understand why we have a user cat, if we are also going to categorize the same user's images; for me a "user page" is more than enough. --E4024 (talk) 13:35, 10 May 2018 (UTC)

This DR

Dear Jeff,

Do you know if modern passports copyrighted or not? I ask this question due to the DR above that I launched. The UAE and most Arab states are strict on copyright and have no FOP (except Egypt) but this is not a COM:FOP issue. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 18:40, 20 May 2018 (UTC)

@Leoboudv: It appears to be an official document, {{PD-UAE}} maybe, but not {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}} with no attribution for the UAE passport office.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 19:12, 20 May 2018 (UTC)

File:Julia (21148508182).jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

OTRS not answering

Hi Jeff, OTRS has not answered my emails going on over a month now. Do you know of any other recourse? I guess I will have to order a new photo session and just make sure they are posted on commons BEFORE anywhere else this time. Any other advice you can give? This is expensive. Vandalism deletion requests

After I saw that you left this comment I restored them, was this wise or should I have discussed it with the person that reverted you? I am not certain how to react in situations containing non-sensical DR's so I'll let you be the judge of it, and I assume that you had your motivations for making the comment and removing the "Speedy" templates. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 17:04, 24 May 2018 (UTC)

@Donald Trung: My motivation is to keep @Jcb happy while following policies and guidelines. What you did was fine, I would have waited for a noncompliant response by @E4024. However, if you are insulted by a claim that you should not exist, you are certainly welcome to pursue redaction.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 17:15, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
@Donald Trung: at any rate, I think everyone should refrain from removing (even seemingly nonsense) DR notices from talk pages. Else we get this again. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 17:20, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: wow, that looks like a mess. Yeah, if notifications of facts get removed the users can't defend their work as they would be unaware. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 18:00, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
@Donald Trung and Alexis Jazz: How about after the DR is closed?   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 18:13, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
Personally I'm an inclusionist so I'm against deleting anything but if you think that it's 100% vandalism then it probably has 0% of succeeding. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 18:33, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
After the DR has been closed (and kept) removing notices from talk pages at least won't do damage. For true gibberish DRs that's ok, otherwise the uploader should maybe look at their uploads anyway, even if the DR was rejected. (they could maybe improve sources etc) - Alexis Jazz ping plz 18:50, 24 May 2018 (UTC)

Hola Jeffː

— Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 14:00, 29 May 2018 (UTC)
Saludos cordiales. Fernando T. de Gorocica 22:05, 29 May 2018 (UTC)
@Fernando de Gorocica: No lo siento. ¿Tienes miedo de escribir a OTRS/es? No, sorry. Are you afraid to write to OTRS/es?   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 23:31, 29 May 2018 (UTC)
Saludos cordiales. Fernando T. de Gorocica 23:59, 29 May 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fernando de Gorocica (talk • contribs) 23:59, 29 May 2018 (UTC)
  • Signing your posts on talk pages is required and it is a Commons guideline to sign your posts on deletion requests, undeletion requests, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). Thank you.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 03:22, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
I am not a Wikicommons administrator. The one and only solution for you is to send an email message via OTRS/es or OTRS.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 03:22, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
Saludos cordiales. Fernando T. de Gorocica 04:22, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

"Nonsense DRs"

Hi Jeff; I noticed that you have voted "speedy keep" in several DRs by a blocked INC sockpuppet. In one of these cases, Commons:Deletion requests/File:Mr. Banafea.png, I have already deleted the file in question and explained the reasoning. Usually, I wouldn't go that much into detail, as it seems to me a quite standard case of "unused personal picture", but as you're an experienced Commons user, too, I was a bit surprised that you call the DR "nonsense". However, for now I'm refraining from handling more of these requests because I thought I'd ask for an explanation for your reasoning first. For example, looking at the open requests, Commons:Deletion requests/File:Mr. Golubiev.jpg or Commons:Deletion requests/File:MRBM.jpg look like other classic examples of unused personal pictures that are, to the best of my knowledge, deleted on a regular basis on Commons. Just the fact that the requests came from a blocked user don't change that IMHO, but your stance might be different? Gestumblindi (talk) 10:12, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

@Gestumblindi: , File:PersonalPP.jpg and File:Mr.Banafea.jpg seem to be in the same family... Lotje (talk) 11:55, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
@Lotje: Yes, I've seen them, and File:PersonalPP.jpg is the image used at the apparent self-promotion page en:User talk:Abdullah Banafea, but I didn't want to delete them right away. Regular deletion requests could be filed. @Jeff G.: I see that you removed the DR templates from the file pages, but the deletion requests as such are still open, so someone has to deal with them. An additional question: Although I'm an admin, I'm not quite sure how exactly we handle edits by blocked users here on Commons. I'm used to German-language Wikipedia where the traditions regarding blocked users differs from English WP, i.e. we don't automatically discard edits by sockpuppets of blocked users if they seem appropriate. But of course the deletion of images that would otherwise be deleted anyway shouldn't be prevented by DRs from blocked users, I think. Gestumblindi (talk) 13:35, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
@Gestumblindi and Lotje: I am following Jcb's past instructions on this page in April and earlier this month and currently under discussion at COM:AN#Nuke. I don't want to get blocked for trying to follow en:WP:DENY and I would rather do something to try to defend against the LTA's antics than nothing, especially as he has started slandering me.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 14:02, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
@Jeff, who dares slandering you!!! That user probably does not realise this is unacceptable behavior. Lotje (talk) 17:11, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
@Lotje: INC, who else?   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 19:57, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
Well, so we have on the one hand some images that usually would be deleted after a DR (unused personal picture type), and on the other hand the understandable wish not to encourage a blocked user. I have to admit that I don't really see how to resolve this conflict of goals. I think I'm leaving it to admins more experienced in such user conflict/block matters. Gestumblindi (talk) 23:53, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
