I nominated this DR and a second DR from this website: https://oshkoshdefense.com/ Some other images from this website have an OTRS ticket here and File:Pierce TAK-4.jpg but they appear to have different numbers. If you think an OTRS ticket permission applies to this image and the other one, feel free to add it to them to save them. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 10:04, 31 December 2017 (UTC)
- The 2 OTRS tickets are both valid but very narrow. They only extend to the images that have the OTRS templates. --Jarekt (talk) 12:49, 2 January 2018 (UTC)
- This photo is the last image with no source from this web site but I will not tag it. After marking almost 100 images from this website, I'm taking a break. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 10:42, 31 December 2017 (UTC)
De-admin proposal
Please feel free to vote Oppose on the 100 edits, 50 edits and other high proposals. I do agree with you that many expertises do not require 100 edits per 6 months. At least vote, and comment on your position, so the vote keep a trace of it. Yug (talk) 19:57, 5 January 2018 (UTC)
licencing for Kolekcja zdjęć z II Wojny Swiatowej Marka Tuszyńskiego
Hi, what is the copyright licence for your dad's collection? is there any chance I could discuss the source with you? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emily0 (talk • contribs) 16:31, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
- The license is "public domain" or no restrictions based on {{PD-Polish}}. The source is my Dad's history research in 1960's in Poland. in the days before copiers if you requested copies of the photographs from an archive, you would get a new print made often from old, possibly original negative. --Jarekt (talk) 17:50, 7 January 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- On Wikidata, the "save" button when you edit is now called "publish". This means all Wikimedia wikis have now changed from "Save page" to "Publish changes". This is to help new editors understand what it does. [1][2]
- Some edits will get an automatic tag on all wikis. This will happen when making a page a redirect, blanking a page, removing almost all content, undoing an edit, or rolling back an edit. You can see the tags for example in the recent changes feed, article history, user contributions or on your watchlist. Some wikis had already marked edits like these in other ways. [3]
- Special:UnusedFiles shows files that have been uploaded but are not used. It will show a file that is not used on the wiki it has been uploaded to, even if the file is used on another wiki. The new Special:GloballyUnusedFiles page on Commons only shows files that are not used on any wiki. [4]
- Structured discussions now uses the 2017 wikitext editor instead of its old custom one. This will work with your preference for wikitext or visual editor. The documentation has been updated. [5][6]
Problems
- Older versions of the Chrome web browser on mobile devices may see the PDF download button, but it does not work. The developers are looking into the problem. [7]
- With the new filters in the recent changes, "Exclude selected" in "Namespaces" did not work for "Saved filters" between 13 December and 2 January. When you loaded the saved filter all other namespaces were excluded instead. This has now been fixed. If you made any changes to your saved filters between 13 December and 2 January, you need to save your filters with excluded namespaces again. [8]
- The latest version of Google Chrome broke how section links are shown in the address bar. You now see
#R%C3%A9sum%C3%A9
instead of#Résumé
even if MediaWiki did not encode it that way. This happened in early December. This problem has been solved. The fix will be in Chrome 64 (23 January) or Chrome 65 (6 March). [9] - Some POST requests to the API took longer than usual in parts of December. This affected the Wikidata UI and some gadgets the most. It has now been fixed. [10]
Changes later this week
- Wikidata will be moved to its own database servers. This is because it is growing and needs more resources. Because of this you will be able to read but not edit Wikidata and the German Wikipedia between 06:00 and 06:30 UTC on 9 January. You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. This includes editing the language links on other wikis. [11]
- The font size in the editing window will change slightly for some users. It will now look the same on all browsers and operating systems. [12][13]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 January. It will be on all wikis from 11 January (calendar).
- WikiEditor's ResourceLoader modules have been simplified to one:
ext.wikiEditor
. All the other modules are now deprecated aliases and should be removed. [14]
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 9 January at 19:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 10 January at 16:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Recent changes
- Bureaucrats on Wikimedia wikis where the Translate extension is installed can now add and remove the translation administrator permission by default. Administrators of wikis where this extension is enabled can add and remove this permission to or from themselves. Wikis that used a different configuration before have not changed. [15]
- There is a new Discourse test support channel for Wikimedia developers. You can ask questions or answer others questions about MediaWiki and Wikimedia software development. [16]
Problems
- Last week's MediaWiki update was rolled back. This was because of a bug that changed non-ASCII characters when a page was edited. [17][18]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 January. It will be on all wikis from 18 January (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 16 January at 19:30 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes
- A few hundred wikis with less than ten high-priority errors in Linter categories will switch to use the Remex parsing library. This is to replace Tidy. It will happen on 31 January. Other wikis will be recommended to switch soon when they have fixed the errors that must be fixed. Tidy will be removed in the middle of 2018. [19][20]

Structured Commons - Design feedback request: Multilingual Captions
Hello! You are receiving this message because you signed up for the the community focus group for Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons.
The Structured Data on Commons team has a new design feedback request up for Multilingual Captions support in the Upload Wizard. Visit the page for more information about the potential designs. Discussion and feedback is welcome there.
On a personal note, you'll see me posting many of these communications going forward for the Structured Data project, as SandraF transitions into working on the GLAM side of things for Structured Data on Commons full time. For the past six months she's been splitting time between the two roles (GLAM and Community Liaison). I'm looking forward to working with you all again. Thank you, happy editing. Wrong wikidata code in authority control data: category item has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |

responsible for Commons:Photo challenge/2018 - January - Blue/Voting
Hey Jarekt, are you responsible for the Voting-Page Commons:Photo challenge/2018 - January - Blue/Voting? I'm missing my picture/entry "File:Neuer Zollhof 02.jpg|Neuer Zollhof (Gehry-Buildings), Düsseldorf, Germany" there.
best regards, --cu Lothar ❍ ✍ ❍ ✉ 09:53, 3 February 2018 (UTC)
- Lothar All the voting pages are created not by hand but by a code. The code can have bugs but it is usually correct. If you look at wikicode of that page you can see why the code rejected this image: "REMOVED: Neuer Zollhof 02.jpg by Lothar Hakelberg was uploaded 08 November 2017 before the challenge opened (01 January 2018)". Sorry about this, but newly uploaded constraint is part of Photo_challenge from the beginning. --Jarekt (talk) 15:32, 3 February 2018 (UTC)
- Uups, i've better should have read the challenge descriptions ;-). My fault! Thanks! --cu Lothar ❍ ✍ ❍ ✉ 20:38, 3 February 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Bureaucrats can now add and remove the accountcreator permission by default. This means the user can help create a large number of accounts, for example for an editathon. Wikis can change this if they want to. [26]
- The Wikidata vandalism dashboard is a new tool to monitor vandalism on Wikidata labels and descriptions. It is filtered by language. [27]
- Info pages for file pages now show the file's SHA1 hash value in the table of basic information. This is so users can see that the file is the same as the one they uploaded. [28]
Problems
- Special:Export has a higher error rate right now. This means that the export does not always work. You should check to make sure your page exports worked. The developers are working on fixing this. [29]
Changes later this week
- When you review an edit made with the visual editor you can check a visual diff of your changes besides the wikitext diff. If you pick one diff type it will remember and show you that in future. The visual diff will now be the type first shown to new users. [30]
- When you use a gallery to show images you can define the size, like
gallery widths="150px"
. You could useem
or%
instead ofpx
but it would make no difference. You can now only use150px
or nothing (150
). If you write something else, instead of treating it likepx
, it will not work. [31] - The wording when you send a thanks message will change. Instead of
Yes
orNo
it will sayThank
andCancel
. It will also be easier to understand that all thanks are public. [32] - Redirects connected to Wikidata can create double Wikidata items. There will now be a tracking category for this. Wikis that don't want it can disable it. [33]

Commatosis
Hello.
Sorry to disturb you here, but am very astonished. What “extremely important” do you develop in module:Creator that completely ignore my week-old report on the module_talk? During this week spread of the disease increased no less than 6×… what else software may we blame for it? And recently the Russian village pump got this report as well. Were you absent for a vacation, I’d possibly already conduct my own investigation, but you are online as far as I see. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 20:44, 7 February 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- TemplateStyles has been deployed to the Swedish Wikipedia. TemplateStyles is a feature to make it easy to add CSS to templates without administrator privileges. This allows for better adaptability to screen sizes, especially on mobile where are half our total page views. If your community would like to be the next to have the feature, please submit a task on Phabricator. [36][37][38]
- Registration pages now collect keyboard/mouse usage information for research on identifying spambots.
Changes later this week
- You can opt in to a new beta feature that lets you use visual diffs on history pages. [39]
- The visual editor shows and lets you edit templates in one way, and reference lists in another. This meant that templates that only contain a fake reference list, like
{{reflist}}
, would not get updated as you edited. Now they will update as you edit, but you will no longer be able to visually edit them as templates. [40] - The abuse filter extension has a new feature
contains_all
that you may use to check if one or more strings are all contained in another given string. [41] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 13 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 14 February. It will be on all wikis from 15 February (calendar).

Geograph Photo
I am at a loss as to why this photo - File:Geograph-3021589-by-Colin-Smith.jpg - should be regarded as having inadequate copyright, attribution and licence information. The page is directly sourced from the standard boilerplate associated with the photograph on Geograph (https://www.geograph.org.uk/reuse.php?id=3021589), and clearly states the source, copyright owner, attribution and that it is under a CC-BY 2.0 licence. At one stage all Geograph photos were to be imported into Wikimedia, but this seems to have died a death. I import the odd one which I have want to use elsewhere, as I have been doing for several years. This is the first one where the text mandated by the original source has been deemed deficient. Semudobia (talk) 19:28, 15 February 2018 (UTC)
- Semudobia, the image was missing a license 3 years ago, but the issue was fixed since. Currently the license seems fine to me. --Jarekt (talk) 19:32, 15 February 2018 (UTC)

Template:Object location and wikidata
Hi Jarekt,
I just (by pure accident) found Category:Croix de chemin de la Ville-Briend popping up in Category:Media with erroneous locations. Your bot changed {{Object location|47.8879|-2.4181}}
into {{Object location|Wikidata=Q3003463}}
and now no coordinates are shown (or rather: only 0's). d:Q3003463 seems to be the correct page on Wikidata, and the coordinates seem to be stored correctly on Wikidata as well. Any idea what might be the problem? Greetings, --El Grafo (talk) 16:54, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
- Fixed it is a strange case of bad edit on wikidata: Wikidata had 2 coordinates from different sources. One person demoted one location, while other deleted the other, so the only location left had demoted rank. Thanks for reporting. We should have a category catching cases like that. --Jarekt (talk) 02:54, 20 February 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The explanation of the abbreviations on the recent changes page could overlap with the list of changes. This has been fixed. [43][44]
- You can now see statistics for pageviews per wiki per country. You can see this on maps or in a table. [45]
Problems
- Linter is reporting estimated counts instead of actual counts for some wikis. This is because of performance problems. You might notice a false higher number in linter counts for some categories. This will be fixed as soon as the performance problem has been fixed. [46]
- Last week the way that Visual Editor displays references lists was changed. As a result, the references generated by specific templates like
{{sfn}}
are not visible in the references list whilst editing. [47][48]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 20 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 21 February. It will be on all wikis from 22 February (calendar).

Missing creators
Hi Jarek, how are you doing? At Commons:WikiProject sum of all paintings/Creators I put a list of people that should have a {{Creator}} template here. Do you happen to have some bot to create these automagically? Multichill (talk) 11:07, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
- I am fine. I am relieved to be done with this round of Creator module. It took a while to get right. I can easy create creator templates for the artists with categories. I can also create categories , but filling them would be an issue. Jarekt (talk) 14:33, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
- Would be great if you can create the categories and creator templates. Don't worry about filling them up. The new uploads will end up in these new categories and for the old ones a bit of search and cat-a-lot seems to work well. Multichill (talk) 15:55, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
- Multichill I created ~100 with categories so far (see the list). I will work in the rest tomorrow. I will need some help with categorizing the new categories. Multichill, I created the second batch of templates and categories (see User:Jarekt/a) I placed new categories in Category:Creator template home categories (2018-02-11). Those categories will need images and better categorization. I can create a lot of creators and categories with a simple AWB run, all I need is a name and item id or category name and item id. I looked at the above query and I do not understand it or its results. I modified your other query which I understand better
SELECT ?item ?itemLabel ?category (COUNT(?painting) AS ?count) (COUNT(?image) AS ?currentimagecount) (COUNT(?cci) AS ?newimagecount)

But why do you have constraint on date of birth and why set to 1923? also why HAVING(?count > 4)?
--Jarekt (talk) 04:02, 12 February 2018 (UTC)
- It's date of death, not date of birth. I'm only uploading works by people who died before 1923 so I can use {{PD-old-auto-1923}} and don't have to worry about copyright. The HAVING is to set a minimum threshold on count. So 5 or more items needed before it shows up. Multichill (talk) 07:29, 12 February 2018 (UTC)

Creator page Art & Language
- Dear @Jarekt: , I hope you are well. I am working on bringing images of Art & Language works on wikimedia commons, and in contact with the artists. They have agreed to release copyright on the images requested for deletion. They are major artists of 20th century and I think it is very important for everybody. Could you please change you mind on deleted their creator page ? Best, Philippe49730--Philippe49730 (talk) 16:15, 26 February 2018 (UTC)

- Jarekt, Art & Language is a conceptual art movement, or a collaboration between conceptual artists. They founded in the 60s Art & Language to escape the heroic image of the artist, and have developped a single corpus of artworks, all signed under one name, "Art & Language". Recent changes
- Checkusers and stewards can now view private data such as the IP address in the abuse log. This data is removed regularly. [50]
Problems
- Last week's MediaWiki version was rolled back because of a bug. [51][52]
- Since the deployment train last week until late evening on 20 February UTC, when you thanked someone for an edit, the thank went to the latest unthanked edit to that page. It didn't matter which edit you tried to give thanks for. This has been fixed. [53]
- Special:Statistics did not take newly created pages into account since 13 February 2018. Because of this the statistics are recreated. [54][55][56]
Changes later this week
- Users with version 10 of the Internet Explorer browser will no longer get JavaScript on Wikimedia wikis. If you use this browser on your computer, you can try upgrading to a newer version. [57]
- The Wikinews wikis will switch to use the Remex parsing library. This is to replace Tidy. It will happen on 27 February. Other wikis will be recommended to switch soon when they have fixed the errors that must be fixed. Tidy will be removed in the middle of 2018. [58][59]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 27 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 28 February. It will be on all wikis from 1 March (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 27 February at 19:30 (UTC). See how to join.

Commons bot inactivity
Hello!
Your bot has been listed at Commons:Bots/Requests/de-flag 5 as being inactive for over two years. As a housekeeping measure we'd like to remove the bot flag from inactive bot accounts, unless you expect the bot will be operated again in the near future. If you wish for your bot to retain it's bot flag, please speak up on the deflag page. If you consent to the removal of the bot flag (or do not reply on the deflag page) you can re-request the bot flag at Commons:Bots/Requests should you need it again. Regards, ~riley (talk) 22:37, 2 March 2018 (UTC)
Photo Challenge
Hope you've got power back again now. I enjoyed looking at those January photo challenge photos. Great to see such variety and so many newbies taking part. I like how a subject like "blue" can lead to great images. Thanks for all the work you do on this. Perhaps I shall be inspired by this month's themes. -- Colin (talk) 09:24, 5 March 2018 (UTC)
- Colin, I am back online after several days of no power and little heat. Virginia was hit by some powerful winds and my next-door neighbor's house lost two kid bedrooms to a falling tree. Luckily nobody got hurt. We do have a lot of new people participating, which I think is great, although I occasionally have to disqualify votes by new users. Subject like "blue" focusing on a secondary characteristics is a nice departure from the usual theme focusing on some primary theme. It allows people to submit images done in many different techniques on many subjects. I wish we had more people pitching novel ideas and voting in Commons talk:Photo challenge/themes, as many new winning ideas seem to be similar (doors, windows, keyholes, balconies, clocks, bathrooms, etc. or blood, bones, eyes, ears, etc.) so challenge like blue (although not very novel either as we had other "color" themes) mixes things up. I might support them individually but would like to see more challenges which are a different. Last year, I think "mammals" and "drone photography" were my favorite as I really enjoyed the submitted photographs. Panning was also interesting as it provided some unusual entries. Thanks for your help this weekend. --Jarekt (talk) 14:44, 5 March 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- You can now make longer edit summaries. [60]
Changes later this week
- You can notify users in edit summaries. They will get a ping just as if they had been mentioned on a wiki page. [61]
- On Special:AbuseLog you can now choose to list only actions that actually made an edit. Other actions are when the filter warned the editor or blocked the edit from being made. There are also more search options. [62][63]
- Wikis can enable Citoid to provide automatic reference look-up in the visual editor and the 2017 wikitext editor, but it is complex. The tool will now warn in the JavaScript console if the configuration isn't correct. Soon Citoid will disable itself if the configuration isn't correct. Check that your wiki is configured correctly. You can ask for help if you need it. [64]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 March. It will be on all wikis from 8 March (calendar).

Future changes
- In the future you will be able to use global preferences. This means you could change a preference for all wikis instead of having to change it every time for each wiki. You can now test global preferences and give feedback.
- You can now read about planned works on maps during 2018. This will be done by June. You can give feedback on the planned maps work.

Option parameter in Template:Creator
Hello, Jarekt. Do you see, why the template {{Creator}} does not work with the named parameter option
, but only with an unnamed param? The documentation and the template source tell it different, but cf. Special:Diff/291856845/291857329 and the change before. Hopefully the only not working parameter. — Speravir – 00:59, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
- {{Creator}} template only works with named parameter
option
, but pages in Creator namespace, like Creator:Johann Gottfried Auerbach only work with unnamed parameters, as documented. The| Option = {{{1|}}}
line in many creator pages does the conversion. --Jarekt (talk) 03:06, 12 March 2018 (UTC)- OK, apart from my letter case mistake it is in my opinion not clear enough documented, but do not know in the moment where exactly it could be done better. — Speravir – 18:51, 12 March 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- 3D models can now be uploaded to Commons. [65]
- Page Previews has been updated to use HTML for previews. This has fixed many issues. An A/B test was done on English and German Wikipedia to measure how it is used. Other changes were also made. [66]
- Some edits have to be checked against too many conditions before they can trigger an abuse filter. If that is the reason no filter is triggered the edit will be tagged for review. [67]
- Auto-saving has been added to the visual editor and the 2017 wikitext editor. Right now it is meant to help if your browser crashes or if you accidentally close a tab. [68]
Problems
- The abuse filter did not tag all edits that should have been tagged after last week's MediaWiki version had come to the wikis. It was fixed on 9 March (UTC). [69]
Changes later this week
- You can notify users in edit summaries. They will get a ping just as if they had been mentioned on a wiki page. This was originally planned to happen last week. [70]

Machine readable license
Sorry for asking again. You have been the last one editing {{Cc-by-layout}}. Do you know which part is responsible for machine readability? Are this the invisible spans? If so do you know whether one could add more than one of the span class="licensetpl_link"
? If you do not know this whome could I ask instead in your opinion? The background is Commons:Village_pump#User_custom_license_tags_forbidden?. — Speravir – 00:14, 13 March 2018 (UTC)

I remember: in the past the template showed paintings size in inches. File:AsmusCarstens.png shows height in inches and width in miles. What's wrong? Taivo (talk) 13:18, 15 March 2018 (UTC)

Hi! There's something wrong there with one of the modules you've been involved in editing recently. I checked a random sample of five other institution templates, and it seems to be happening in all of them. Are you able to figure out what's wrong? Jon Harald Søby (talk) 11:25, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
- Since the line with the error has to do with user language, I should mention that my user language is "nb". When I check with other languages using ?uselang, it seems to be working properly. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 11:28, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
- Jon Harald Søby, Thank you for reporting this. Thanks to this I discovered some deep-rooted issues with Module:Coordinates, which was one of my early attempts on working with Lua. I have the fix to Module:Coordinates ready but it will need some more testing. The fix will prevent the actual code crash, but there might be still an issue with handling of "nb" language. --Jarekt (talk) 13:04, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
- Jon Harald Søby What is the relationship between "no" and "nb" languages? MediaWiki:Lang/nb used to list language of the user with "nb" language preference, lists "no". Would there be any valid reason for that? --Jarekt (talk) 13:14, 16 March 2018 (UTC)

“nb” is specifically bokmål, “no” is likely generic Norwegian. Did not help, see https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Institution:Louvre?uselang=nb or https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Institution:Louvre?uselang=no , whichever (but e.g. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Institution:Louvre?uselang=nn works). Incnis Mrsi (talk) 13:22, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
- @Jarekt: It's a long story. Most of the Wikimedia-verse has stanardized on used nb everywhere except for in the domain of no.wikipedia.org (which is nb.wikipedia.org, because of historical snafu). However, Commons still uses no instead of nb to a very large degree. Ideally both MediaWiki:Lang/no and MediaWiki:Lang/nb should be "nb" and not "no", but I'm afraid of unintended side-effects if we just change them without knowing what else relies on them (which I imagine is a lot…). Basically, "no" is a macro-language that covers both "nb" and "nn", but in the Commons context "no" means just "nb".
- @Incnis Mrsi: Since both MediaWiki:Lang/no and MediaWiki:Lang/nb have the same language code, there ought to be no difference in those two ?uselang links. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 14:19, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
- Anyways, it seems like the recent edits you made fixed the issue. I don't know why exactly, but it worked! Thank you! Jon Harald Søby (talk) 14:22, 16 March 2018 (UTC)

- Some of the interface icons and text sizes will change slightly, as part of the updates for improved accessibility and consistency. These icons are used in many features, including Notifications, Recent Changes, Beta Features, Visual Editor, 2017 Wikitext Editor, Code Editor, and others. While editor toolbars, dialogs, and menus will appear slightly bigger; elements on special pages will be slightly smaller. Functionality will not change. [79] [80]
- The deprecated #toc and #toctitle CSS ids have been removed. If your wiki was still using these for fake Tables of Content (ToC) then these might lose their styling. They can be replaced with .toc and .toctitle classes where appropriate. [81]
- TemplateStyles will be deployed to the Wikivoyages on 28 March 2018. [82]

- From 9 April, the sort order of categories will be distorted for a short time. We are upgrading versions of an internationalisation library (ICU) and using a maintenance script to update existing database entries. This will last anywhere from a few hours to a few days, depending on wiki size. Read more details. [83]

- Arnd I do not see ucfirst mentioned anywhere in File:The Hell and the Flood P2.jpg. Can you elaborate? --Jarekt (talk) 18:27, 27 March 2018 (UTC)

- I do not know. It seems like User:Vincent Steenberg added it, so we should check with him. For example
{{ucfirst: {{Oil on panel}} }}
gives "oil on panel " which is the same as{{Oil on panel}}
: "oil on panel ". For other entries it might be matter of preference to have fields capitalized or not. I do not have a opinion (both seems fine), but would prefer to have them done the same way in as many files as possible. --Jarekt (talk) 18:43, 27 March 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Template Wizard script available for testing. It will show up as a puzzle-piece icon in the 2010 WikiEditor. You can click on the icon to insert a template.
- The Wikimedia Communities and Contributors survey is to be sent to participants around the world this week. If you are volunteer developer, and have contributed code to any pieces of MediaWiki, gadgets, or tools, please take 20 to 40 minutes to complete the survey.
Problems
- MediaWiki deployment train has been rolled back to version 1.31.0-wmf.26 on week 13, due to a multiplication of lost connections during MySQL queries. Some of the recent changes may have not been applied. They will be deployed next week. [84][85][86]
- The Notifications badge icons were overlapping other links. This has been fixed. [87]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 3 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 4 April. It will be on all wikis from 5 April (calendar).
- User subpages ending in
.json
will now be protected from other people editing them, like.js
and.css
pages already are. If you have a tool that stores static configuration, you can now use a subpage likeUser:Example/mygadget.json
to do this without concerns. [88] - Tidy will be replaced by RemexHtml on the next set of wikis. On April 4, we plan to turn off Tidy on all Wikiquotes (except frwikiquote) and Wikimedia chapters and user groups wikis. 23 wikis will have Tidy replaced this time. [89][90][91]
- AbuseFilter will transition to use OOUI starting April 4, and the rule editor will also be changed to a CodeEditor (ACE) similar to what is found on user JavaScript pages. The move to OOUI will continue over the next few weeks. [92] [93]
- In Special:Preferences, the preference "Reload the watchlist automatically whenever a filter is changed (JavaScript required)" is now only visible for users who have opt-out the New Filters for the Watchlist. [94]
- You can see names of individual abuse filters in Special:AbuseLog. Now if the name of an abuse filter contains some wikisyntax like links, it will not change to a link when displayed. [95]
- You can now search through filter patterns at Special:AbuseFilter. You may specify either a plain string or a regular expression and the matching filters will show a snippet of their pattern with the match highlighted. [96]
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 3 April at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 4 April at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- If you're using, creating or improving Lua modules, you can give your feedback to help harmonizing the modules across wikis and add more useful functions.
- On April 11th, we plan to turn off Tidy on all wikis with less than 50 entries in all high priority linter categories. About 60 wikis will have Tidy replaced. Currently about 600 wikis have had Tidy replaced and we have another 300 wikis to go. We plan to finish this transition from Tidy to RemexHtml by end of June 2018. Please follow T175706 to monitor progress of Tidy replacement. [97][98]

Welcome to the newsletter for Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons! You can update your subscription to the newsletter and contribute to the next issue. Do inform others who you think will want to be involved in the project!
- Community updates
- Our dedicated IRC channel: wikimedia-commons-sd webchat
- Several Commons community members are working on ways to integrate Wikidata in Wikimedia Commons. While this is not full-fledged structured data yet, this work helps to prepare for future conversion of data, and helps to understand how Wikidata and Commons can work better together.
- Thanks to Jarekt and other contributors, some Commons templates can now be filled via Wikidata: {{Creator}} (Phabricator) and {{Institution}} (Phabricator). Work is ongoing on the {{Artwork}} template (Phabricator).
- Thanks to Mike Peel and others, Wikidata-powered infoboxes can now be added to Commons categories, with the template {{Wikidata Infobox}}. (Example)
- Multichill is working on an experimental workflow to upload images to Commons via Wikidata (and using metadata from Wikidata). See a part of it here.
- Join the community focus group!
- Do you want to help out translating messages about Structured Data on Commons from English to your own language? Sign up on the translators page.
- Contribute to the next newsletter.
- Discussions held
- Conversation about licensing and copyright modeling.
- High-level discussion on ontology for Commons.
- Review first designs for multilingual captions.
- IRC office hour, 13 February
- Events
- Wikimedia Conference, Berlin, 20-22 April (+ Learning Days 18-19 April): several sessions and workshops around Structured Commons
- EuropeanaTech Conference, Rotterdam, 15-16 May: several presentations + a full workshop day on Monday 14 May about Wikidata and Structured Commons
- Wikimedia Hackathon, Barcelona, 18-20 May: Structured Commons as a focus area.
- Partners and allies
- We are still welcoming (more) staff from GLAMs (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) to become part of our long-term focus group (phabricator task T174134). You will be kept in the loop of the project, and receive regular small surveys and requests for feedback. Get in touch with Sandra if you're interested - your input in helping to shape this project is highly valued!
- Research
- The research about GLAM contributions to Wikimedia Commons is concluded. A blog post on the Wikimedia blog provides a summary, and you can read the full results on meta.wikimedia.org.
- Prototypes will be available for Multilingual Captions soon.
- Stay up to date!
- Follow the Structured Data on Commons project on Phabricator: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/project/profile/34/

LUA Artwork feedback
Hi Jarek, I noticed some activity on Module:Artwork/sandbox. Cool! Are you already collecting feedback somewhere? If so, you could copy this to that location. I tested on File:Adriaan de Lelie - Portret van de familie van Adriaan Bonebakker met Dirk L. Bennewitz - SK-A-5013 - Rijksmuseum.jpg by replacing {{Artwork}} with {{Artwork/sandbox}}:
- I like the title header from Wikidata!
- Removing the local creator template and institution template still gives the exact same output. Cool! Have you already worked on the funky anonymous attributions/school of things? I would keep that for version 2.0
- Both object history and exhibition history just give a big dot. No idea where that is coming. You are probably starting a loop somewhere that has no results?
- The file ends up in Category:Pages using Artwork template with incorrect parameter, this seems to be caused by the wikidata field
Multichill (talk) 13:40, 5 April 2018 (UTC)
- Multichill, Thanks for testing it. I mostly test it on Module talk:Artwork/sandbox/testcases examples, which seem broken at the moment.
- Removing the local creator template and institution template should be OK. The behavior is to first look for predefined creator/institution template and if not found than create one on the fly.
- I did not "worked on the funky anonymous attributions/school of things". That will be I guess later stage. I guess I would have to see how that is modeled in Wikidata.
- I will check on files ending up in Category:Pages using Artwork template with incorrect parameter. Since I am testing it on pages not in file namespace I did not noticed that.
- There are a few challenges I do not have clear solution to:
- d:Property_talk:P793#Strange_(mis)use_of_"of_(P642)"_qualifier_within_significant_event_(P793)_property describes problems with modeling "Object History" info using P793
- Since "Object History" is assembled by merging info from significant event (P793), commissioned by (P88), and owned by (P127), there might be some repeated events
- I can not figure out the issue demonstrated in Module_talk:Artwork/sandbox/testcases#Bullets_in_some_fields, as wikicode generated by the new template should be the same as old template.
- There are also several issues I did not tackle, yet:
- Making {{Technique}} compatible with Wikidata. We might need rewrite in Lua, but that is such a big undertaking I would prefer to do it in version 2.0. I might have to map all items used by made from material (P186) to ~ 700 key words used by {{Technique}}.
- I need to understand better the use of exhibition history (P608) and it's qualifiers so I can present the data on Commons.
- I never learned how to transfer labels to translatewiki. You wrote something in the past to explain the process and there is some documentation on mw:Localisation#Adding_new_messages and possibly other pages, but I still do not understand the process at all. {{Institution}} and some {{Artwork}} field names need to be transferred.
- So there is still plenty to do. --Jarekt (talk) 15:53, 5 April 2018 (UTC)
- I would favour a two-step approach:
- First version of {{Artwork}} using Module:Artwork has the same functionality and some easy quick wins.
- Second verson (probably more iterations) add new functionality based on Wikidata.
- Right now I would focus on getting the first version deployed. I think most of the problems you have are now related to the second version. Do you agree? Is this the right way to tackle this problem? What is a good location to keep track of the new features? Multichill (talk) 16:37, 5 April 2018 (UTC)
- You are right. I should concentrate on first reproducing capabilities of the current template, replacing the current template and than working on fetching stuff from and to Wikidata. So the next step would be to fix the issue with bullets and start working on current maintenance categories. --Jarekt (talk) 17:24, 5 April 2018 (UTC)
- This was the easy part (apparently 0 evaluates to true in LUA). Multichill (talk) 19:26, 5 April 2018 (UTC)
- I got few more things fixed in regard to Object history. We might have to fix Wikidata data model for this feature to be really useful. In the mean time I switch gears and work on reproducing current functionality and testing. --Jarekt (talk) 19:25, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
- Sounds like a good plan. I don't think I can be of much help with the LUA.... Multichill (talk) 22:01, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- Some pages have templates that describe problems with that article. There is now more information for mobile readers and what is wrong with the article and how they could help fix it. [99]
- You can now thank users for many more actions than edits to a page. This was one of the top ten requests in the Wishlist Survey last year. [100]
- The sort order of categories will have errors for a short time starting Monday 9 April (UTC). We are upgrading versions of an internationalisation library (ICU) and using a script to update the database. This will take between a few hours and a few days depending on wiki size. You can read more details. [101]
- Tag filter titles will now work better on wikis where the tag filter title is in a language that is written in another direction than the language of that wiki. This could for example be an English title (written from left to right) on a Hebrew or an Arabic wiki (written from right to left). [102]
Problems
- The bookmark icon for saved filters on the recent changes page disappeared because of new icon changes. This has now been fixed. [103]
- For a week in March rollbacks got both the
rollback
and theundo
tag on the recent changes page and other pages where you see tags. This has now been fixed. [104]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 10 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 11 April. It will be on all wikis from 12 April (calendar).
- Patrolled edits now have three states instead of two. Recent changes filters are updated to show unpatrolled, autopatrolled and manually patrolled edits. [105]
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 10 April at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 11 April at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- The iOS and Android apps will get synced reading lists later in April.

Islamic artisans has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. Thank you! |

Every response for this survey can help the Wikimedia Foundation improve your experience on the Wikimedia projects. So far, we have heard from just 29% of Wikimedia contributors. The survey is available in various languages and will take between 20 and 40 minutes to be completed. Take the survey now.
If you have already taken the survey, we are sorry you've received this reminder. We have design the survey to make it impossible to identify which users have taken the survey, so we have to send reminders to everyone. If you wish to opt-out of the next reminder or any other survey, send an email through EmailUser feature to WMF Surveys. You can also send any questions you have to this user email. Changes later this week
- Profiling statistics for an abuse filter tell how often edits match the filter. The statistics for the abuse filters were reset after 10000 actions. Wikis can now decide to reset it more or less often. They can file a phabricator task to do so. [106]
- Abuse filters will now treat integers and floats more precisely. For example, 5/2 was rounded down to 2 but will now be 2.5 and 2*4 will be the integer 8 and not the floating-point number 8.0. Division values are the only ones changed. For the rest only strict comparisons (
===
and!==
) will be affected leaving the values unchanged. [107][108] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 17 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 18 April. It will be on all wikis from 19 April (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 17 April at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 18 April at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- The new PDF renderer could not create PDFs from books. Books are in this case collections of pages on a Wikimedia wiki. PediaPress will take over development of the books-to-PDF function. [109]
- Pywikibot will no longer support Python 2.7.2 and 2.7.3. [110]
- Volunteer developers can fill out the Wikimedia Communities and Contributors survey. The last day is April 22 (UTC). This is a third-party service survey. See the privacy statement.

Pages with script errors
Per your comment at Template talk:Label#Deleted Q numbers, in case you haven't yet had time to track down the reason for the many errors in Category:Pages with script errors with titles like Category:1890 in Iran by city, the reason is that Template:IranYear/sort invokes Module:ArtIran which does not exist. Rafic.Mufid might like to comment-out the invoke until it works. Johnuniq (talk) 03:27, 17 April 2018 (UTC)
- Johnuniq well, actually i'm not very professional in templates (i do copy/past from similar templates to make news), and idk what's wrong with this iran by year-related templates. I like to notice that there is at least four templates for History of Iran by year, Imperial State of Iran year, Sublime State of Persia year, 18th century Iran year, Safavid year and Iranyear. So, errors are not just about the module as you seen, wrong use of flags in this categories must be corrected. --Rafic.Mufid (talk) 04:05, 17 April 2018 (UTC)
- If you said where they were copied from I might be able to work out what should happen. Or, I could just patch the template so it does invoke the non-existent module. Or, Jarekt might be familiar with this style of template and know what should happen. Johnuniq (talk) 05:28, 17 April 2018 (UTC)
- I think I solved the issue Template:IranYear/sort was converting year number-string (like "1999") to a Category sort-key. That is totally unnecessary as year is a good value to sort on. --Jarekt (talk) 12:23, 17 April 2018 (UTC)
- If you said where they were copied from I might be able to work out what should happen. Or, I could just patch the template so it does invoke the non-existent module. Or, Jarekt might be familiar with this style of template and know what should happen. Johnuniq (talk) 05:28, 17 April 2018 (UTC)
Can you take a look this, please?--Ma▀▄Ga 18:06, 18 April 2018 (UTC)
[111] There is a little bit difference in appearance (compared with english): see table at Help people find this file. (Commons has over 46 million files.). I don't know how to fix in croatian, so if you can, I would appreciate it.--Ma▀▄Ga 14:47, 19 April 2018 (UTC)
OTRS request
Hi Jarek, has just been added to the article in Polish, but the way OTRS is displayed here is not customary. Or maybe the template has changed? Can you have have a look? Thanks! Boston9 (talk) 20:38, 18 April 2018 (UTC)
- The OTRS was not processed yet, so it looked differently, as we have 60 day backlog. It is OK now. --Jarekt (talk) 02:15, 19 April 2018 (UTC)

--Jarekt (talk) 12:03, 20 April 2018 (UTC)

- The visual editor and the 2017 wikitext ask you to write an edit summary after you press
Publish
. This button now also shows an ellipsis. This is to show that pressingPublish
is not the last step. [113]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 24 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 25 April. It will be on all wikis from 26 April (calendar).

Hackathon?
Are you going to the Wikimedia Hackathon 2018 in Barcelona? Multichill (talk) 09:01, 21 April 2018 (UTC)
- I was not planning on it. I do not think I have ever been to a hackathon before, and the only other wikimedia events I come to are near by ones and the ones I can get scholarship for, and both are very rare. --Jarekt (talk) 13:36, 21 April 2018 (UTC)
- That's a shame, maybe next time? Multichill (talk) 10:09, 27 April 2018 (UTC)
- I do not know much about Hackathons. I have never been to one and the ones I hear about seem to happen often and somewhere far away. I am willing to go to events within half a day of driving, but anything farther than that I would probably apply for a scholarship to fly to. So how do you know which future Hackathons would be worth applying for scholarship for? --Jarekt (talk) 01:53, 28 April 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The parameter for unpatrolled edits in recent changes filters changed name. You might need to update saved filters and links. [115]
Problems
- We are migrating wikis from Tidy to Remex. Because of a bug the 250 wikis which do not yet use Remex were switched on 23 April. This is two months early. This meant that pages with broken wikitext showed wrongly to readers. The bug was undone the next day. You can help fix broken wikitext to avoid this problem when your wiki switches. Tidy will be removed on all wikis before July 2018. You can follow the process on Phabricator. [116]
Changes later this week
- You will be able use CodeMirror in the 2017 wikitext editor on all wikis. CodeMirror helps with syntax highlighting. It has previously been a beta feature and only available on wikis with scripts that are written from left to right. [117]
- When an administrator blocks someone they will have a calendar they can use to choose when the block ends. This is to make it easier to pick a specific date. [118]
- You can soon turn on the Performance Inspector in the Editing section in your preferences. It shows information about the performance of pages. This could be the size of modules in the page, how many CSS selectors are defined on the page and how many are used, or the size of the images on the page. This tool is intended to help editors fix pages that load slowly. [119]
- There is a new abuse filter function called
equals_to_any
. You can use it to check if its first argument is equal (===
) to any of the following ones. For example you can use it to check if the page's namespace is amongst a given set of values in a more compact way than you could earlier. You can read more on mediawiki.org. - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 1 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 2 May. It will be on all wikis from 3 May (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 1 May at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 2 May at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- The Wikimedia Cloud Services team is working on a new project called Toolhub. The goal is to make it easier for Wikimedians to discover software tools they can use. You can leave feedback on the talk page or email jharewikimedia.org to leave private feedback.
- All wikis with fewer than 100 high-priority linter errors in all namespaces will switch to use the Remex parsing library. This is to replace Tidy. It will happen on 2 May. Other wikis will be recommended to switch soon when they have fixed the errors that must be fixed. Wikibooks wikis with fewer than 100 high-priority linter errors in the main namespace will switch on 9 May. Tidy will be removed on all wikis before July 2018. [120][121][122]

Photo challenge/2018 - March - Spring/Voting
Hi Dear Jarekt... Thanks for your Correction on my of the Photo challenge/2018 - March - Spring and as I am a new User with less than 6 Months experience hear I would like to learn from my mistakes for the Voting so can you tell me why they were wrong as you correct them thankfully?..Best Regards..--Sarbast.T.Hameed (talk) 07:58, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
- Sarbast.T.Hameed You can vote only for a single 1st place, single second place, single 3d place and as many likes as you like. You voted for 2 first places. The algorithm that scores the votes ignores votes in such a case, so I change them to likes so they count at least partially. --Jarekt (talk) 02:11, 6 May 2018 (UTC)
- Dear Jarekt Thanks a lot for your perfect explanation and work, I got it now --Sarbast.T.Hameed (talk) 07:05, 6 May 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The Wikimedia Commons mobile app has a new version. It is now easier to find nearby places that need pictures. It helps you with direct uploads and title and category suggestions. The app only works on Android phones. [123]
Problems
- The abuse filters had a problem with blocks where you had changed how long they last. It used the default length everywhere. This was in late April. Abuse filter users should make sure the right block length is used and change them if needed. This is only for filters where how long blocks last had been changed. [124]
Changes later this week
- The advanced search function beta feature will be on all Wikimedia wikis. It makes it easier to use some of the special search functions that most editors don't know exist. [125]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 May. It will be on all wikis from 10 May (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 8 May at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 9 May at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- All wikis with fewer than 100 high-priority linter errors in the main namespace will switch to use the Remex parsing library. This is to replace Tidy. It will happen on 16 May. Other wikis will switch soon when they have fixed the errors that must be fixed. Tidy will be removed on all wikis before July 2018. [126][127]

Przywrócenie usuniętego zdjęcia
Witam.

--Jarekt (talk) 03:15, 10 May 2018 (UTC)
Hi, in 2012 you expanded that template to 15 parms. Would you mind to add some more parameters (at least 2 for the moment, but 4 or 5 may be sure for some future). -- sarang♥사랑 06:37, 17 May 2018 (UTC)
- sarang, I will look into it. It is actually kind of strange why we need specific list of parameters at all. The {{Autotranslate}} template should be able to pass all the numbered and named parameters to the language subtemplates. --Jarekt (talk) 16:10, 17 May 2018 (UTC)
- I was not really comprehending fully how it works - as far as I can see there are at the moment par1 to par15; enough for most uses, but now I need some more. The module to which these parameters are passed does not care and can handle all parameters that are used. It is no problem that there are only numbered parameters, they can be used for every one of the different purposes, more universal than named ones. -- sarang♥사랑 17:43, 17 May 2018 (UTC)

Another edit request
Hi, I come to you with a uncommon request. Admin:Perhelion wrote a script and protected it. Now Perhelion is vanished since two months, nobody knows of his whereabouts, and whether he will come again and when. We are in great sorrow, he has told nothing and does not answer e-mail. Can a search happen, e.g. at Admins noteboard?
His script is often used by many users. We need some corrections in that script, and we cannot ask him to do it. How about the future maintanance of this now orphaned tool?
One error needs an urgent correction, and I made it. Prior to future decisions about the script, would you please copy the corrected code from my userpage User:Sarang/simpleSVGcheck.js to User:Perhelion/simpleSVGcheck.js. It is a very small change, just a necessary default that had been missing; I tested it carefully.
The other corrections are not so urgent. -- sarang♥사랑 16:16, 18 May 2018 (UTC)
- sarang, Page User:Perhelion/simpleSVGcheck.js is not protected so anybody can edit it; However maybe a better way would be to just leave User:Sarang/simpleSVGcheck.js where it is and switch to use that version. --Jarekt (talk) 16:23, 18 May 2018 (UTC)
- No, I cannot edit this page: I get the message "This page is protected" and I can only view its source. For me, I have switched the use to my version - but it seems not possible to tell all the other users to switch as well. Therefore it might be better to correct Perhelions script, while I can use mine for further test and corrections without the need to establish an additional version for that purpose. It is not so bad to have an "official" version not influenced by the necessary tests, whether it is protected or not. Please make the edit, other users are waiting for it. -- sarang♥사랑 05:03, 19 May 2018 (UTC)
- I made the change. Please monitor places other can be reporting issues about it. --Jarekt (talk) 01:47, 20 May 2018 (UTC)

Hi, your last edit at this template broke something. Thousands of files had a 'template loop' error message displayed instead of the license. Jcb (talk) 15:40, 23 May 2018 (UTC)
- That is really strange. Template:PD-Art still complains about template loops but at least files using it show the license properly. --Jarekt (talk) 16:26, 23 May 2018 (UTC)
- The files that I saw with the error message has this combination: {{PD-Art|PD-1923}}. I don't know if this tells you something. Jcb (talk) 20:51, 23 May 2018 (UTC)
- Jcb, I think the issue is that Template:PD-Art was using {{Autotranslate}} and was transcuding {{PD-1923}} which also called {{Autotranslate}}. Both codes called the template with different parameters and should work fine, but some system flagged it as an infinite template loop. That I understand (kind of), but now after your revert Template:PD-Art is still in category Category:Pages with template loops. Oh, I just noticed that 48k other templates are there as well. I think maybe that is an issue with {{Documentation}} template. BTW, I think I will try to create couple identical clones of {{Autotranslate}} to maybe fool template loop detection. --Jarekt (talk) 01:24, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
- Apparently your strategy works, Category:Files with no machine-readable license is not flooded this time. Jcb (talk) 15:28, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
- I also managed to remove 48k templates from Category:Pages with template loops by altering {{Documentation}} template. --Jarekt (talk) 15:34, 24 May 2018 (UTC)

Object location and Wikidata Infobox
Finally following up on your comments about {{Object location}} and {{Wikidata Infobox}} at [132], I've implemented the four links at {{Wikidata Infobox/sandbox}}. Please could you have a look and see if they are working OK? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 23:54, 22 May 2018 (UTC)
- Mike Peel I replaced {{Wikidata Infobox}} with {{Wikidata Infobox/sandbox}} in Category:Poland but although preview looked fine now there is bunch or errors in the infobox due to Lua codes taking more than allocated 10 sec. I will try it on other categories, but is it something we should fix or remove {{Wikidata Infobox}} from such pages. Map of Poland's location was a bit strange, as it showed location few feet south of some highway. It might be better to somehow adjust the scale of such maps, perhaps with use of coordinates of easternmost point (P1334) and similar properties. --Jarekt (talk) 12:28, 23 May 2018 (UTC)
- Hmm, it doesn't help that {{Countries of Europe}} seems to use 64(!) expensive parser functions, but the infobox seems to be taking far too long anyway. I'll look into optimising it. I need to figure out how to auto-scale the map, it's now set to show street-level info as that's what will work best in most categories, but obviously that fails for country-level categories. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 12:43, 23 May 2018 (UTC)
- Mike Peel I did try {{Wikidata Infobox/sandbox}} also at Category:Pstrąże (where the links do not seem to do much, but likely not due to your template) and Category:Saska Kępa (where they worked just fine). --Jarekt (talk) 12:56, 23 May 2018 (UTC)
- RexxS made a new Lua version of {{GetQID}}, which was causing most of the slow-down before, so the infobox should be a lot quicker to load now. I'll deploy the new links soon, and will think about how best to sort out the map (although that's probably going to be a fix for a few versions in the future). Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 11:06, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
- That is great. As for better maps (in the future) I would use coordinates of northernmost point (P1332), coordinates of southernmost point (P1333), coordinates of easternmost point (P1334), coordinates of westernmost point (P1335) properties, if they are provided and current code if not. --Jarekt (talk) 11:36, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
- Possibly, although that's a bit complex and those properties aren't always present. I was thinking about using area (P2046) to check if the area covered by the object is bigger than the current map setting, and if so to expand the map. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 13:36, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
- Just to let you know that the new version of the infobox with this change is now live. mapzoom TBD. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 21:07, 25 May 2018 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- You can now use global preferences on most wikis. This means you can set preferences for all wikis at the same time. Before this you had to change them on each individual wiki. Global preferences will come to the Wikipedias later this week. [133][134]
- It is now easier for blocked mobile users to see why they were blocked. [135]
- Wikidata now supports lexicographical data. This helps describe words.
- There is now a checkbox on Special:ListUsers to let you see only users in temporary user groups. [136]
- Some rare invisible Unicode characters have recently been banned from page titles. This includes soft hyphens (U+00AD) and left-to-right (U+2066) and right-to-left (U+2067) isolate markers. Existing pages with these characters will soon be moved by a script. [137]
- There's a new Wikimedia Foundation team to support the Wikimedia technical communities. It's called the Technical Engagement team. Most of the team members did similar work in other teams before this. [138]
Problems
- Some translatable pages are showing old translations instead of latest ones. The cause of this issue has been fixed. We will update all pages automatically to show the latest translations. [139]
Changes later this week
- There will be a new special page named PasswordPolicies. This page gives information about the password rules for each user group on that wiki. [140]
- A new way to see moved paragraphs in diffs is coming to most wikis. This is to make it easier to find the moved paragraphs and the changes in them. [141]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 29 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 30 May. It will be on all wikis from 31 May (calendar).
- Wikis can enable Citoid to provide automatic reference look-up in the visual editor and the 2017 wikitext editor. This is complex. The tool will now disable itself if the configuration isn't correct. It has warned about this in the JavaScript console since February. Check that your wiki is configured correctly. You can ask for help if you need it. [142]
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 29 May at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 30 May at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- Content Translation drafts which have not been updated in over a year will be removed. This allows other users to translate those articles. [143]
- A survey is collecting information on what users think about how Wikimedia wiki pages are loaded. This information could be used in future development. [144]
- Some wikis will switch to use the Remex parsing library. This is to replace Tidy. It will happen on 30 May and 13 June. Wikis with fewer than 100 linter issues in the main namespace in all high-priority linter categories will switch. This includes Wikidata. Tidy will probably be removed on all wikis in the first week of July. [145][146]

Recent changes
- The MonoBook skin has been optimised for mobile devices. It now looks different. [147]
- Planet Wikimedia collects blogs about Wikimedia. It will now use the Rawdog feed aggregator to do this instead of Planet. [148][149]
- Redirect links in Special:WhatLinksHere now link to the original page and not the target page. This was done earlier and changed the used messages on some pages. This was a problem for wikis that customized the message. A new change fixed this by using the old messages with one more parameter for customization. Wikis that already changed their customized messages will have to move the customization back again. [150]
Problems
- You will not be able to edit some wikis between 06:00 and 06:30 UTC on 13 June. You can see if your wiki is one of them.
- MassMessage did not work 24–28 May. This is also why last week's Tech News was late. [151]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 5 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 6 June. It will be on all wikis from 7 June (calendar).

Future changes
- The new filters for edit review tools and interface for watchlists will leave beta. This is planned to happen in June or early July. [152][153]

Wrong name or not?
[154] Translation of this template makes Template:cfd/XX. I have translated it, and moved to new name according to other languages (e.g. this or this). Am I wrong, or something is wrong with translation link at the bottom of main page of the template? After all, there's no translation in croatian visible on the main page of the template.--Ma▀▄Ga 13:35, 3 June 2018 (UTC)

Hello, Jarekt. I really appreciate all of your help. Currently the home country licenses are not displayed at {PD-art-two}, for example File:Abeno by Yamakawa Shūhō.jpg. I think that this editing is probably affecting, can you fix it? --Y.haruo (talk) 05:07, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
- There's also an issue with {{User at project}} not formatting properly, like on File:LocatieProvFlevoland.png, probably related to a change to {{Projectname}}. --ghouston (talk) 06:55, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
- I reverted this one, since the template isn't protected for some reason. --ghouston (talk) 07:22, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
- @Y.haruo: , I suggest also reverting the edit to {{PD-Art-two}}. --ghouston (talk) 07:26, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
@Y.haruo and Ghouston: Thanks for reporting those issues. They were caused not by changes to {{Autotranslate}} but by my resent changes to some few remaining templates that use {{Fallback}} and {{SuperFallback}}, two templates that use no longer maintained language fallback mechanism. Due to phabricator:T196464, some of the templates I converted ended up in Category:Pages with template loops. My workaround phabricator:T196464 is to use {{Autotranslate/clone 1}} and {{Autotranslate/clone 2}} instead of {{Autotranslate}}. I am monitoring Category:Pages with template loops and correcting issues that cause pages to show up there. --Jarekt (talk) 13:01, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you for making the revisions.--Y.haruo (talk) 16:48, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
This template seems to be broken. See File:Grand Temple, Freemasons' Hall, London 2017-09-17-4.jpg. I only see "Camera Model" appear (which is blank). I don't see the other fields. Can you figure out what is wrong? -- Colin (talk) 16:57, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
- Fixed Thanks for notifying me. I did not notice that that template used upper case inputs. --Jarekt (talk) 17:54, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
- Oh I don't know enough about templates to know what is right/wrong. There didn't seem to be anything on the template that changed recently. Has the wiki software changed? -- Colin (talk) 17:59, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
- The issue was due to my edit here. {{Autotranslate}} is preferred method of i18n over {{Fallback}}, but it is not case sensitive and passes to subtemplates only lower case arguments. --Jarekt (talk) 18:09, 6 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi, sorry but something is still wrong with it. See i.e. Category:Files moved to Commons requiring review as of 23 February 2009 or Commons:Database reports/Self-categorized categories for all 1000+ cats using it. They are not categorized to Category:Files moved to Commons requiring review by date anymore but to itself and some non extsiting cats. Its nice and OK to use autotranslate but the result should be correct, I assume. Can you please have anthor look. Thx. --JuTa 07:41, 7 June 2018 (UTC)
- I give up, as I do not understand why Template:BotMoveToCommonsHeader with autotranslate would behave differently from Fallback. Sorry about the disruptions. If there anything I should clean up? --Jarekt (talk) 11:50, 7 June 2018 (UTC)
- Thx for your self-revert. I dont think there is anything else to do... --JuTa 14:44, 7 June 2018 (UTC)
Hi Jarekt, i just tried to cleanup the mentioned category. Unfortunately, i could not find the root of the errors. Maybe you could take a look at it. Thank you in advance, --Arnd (talk) 17:51, 7 June 2018 (UTC)
- Arnd, {{LangSwitch}} requires each instance to have either "en" or "default" options which are not empty. "~" can be used to get empty string. This category catalogs pages with pages where that requirement is not met. I just fixed several templates, and AFAICT everything seems to be in order. --Jarekt (talk) 18:28, 7 June 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks. Seems that there is still an error in template {{By}} causing many files and categories to appear in the maintenance category. But i am too stupid to repair it ;-) --Arnd (talk) 19:43, 7 June 2018 (UTC)
Whatever change has been implemented causes the LangSwitch Error: no default message to appear for everything that uses by color categories. Why does that happen, and how can it be fixed? 2A04:4540:901:AF00:7D17:C235:6744:7A53 19:50, 7 June 2018 (UTC)
- I fixed {{By}} template. Maybe that will help. --Jarekt (talk) 20:28, 7 June 2018 (UTC)
Issue with template "Inline coordinates"
I’ve pinged you about this, so …
I’ve recently added on request the opportinity to show a label instead of the coordinates with template {{Inline coordinates}} (something that’s possible for years in dewiki with template de:Vorlage:Coordinate) – the necessary change for this is actually in {{Coord/link}}, though (and the param label
added to the whole template chain). You can see the effect with the 2 last examples in {{Inline coordinates}} doc. Now user Barghaan who requested the change noticed that in mobile view the coordinates are not suppressed. Do you see why? Should we perhaps consider this a bug? If you also do not know what happens here who else could be asked in your opinion – presumingly Phabricator? — Speravir – 18:53, 11 June 2018 (UTC)
- Never mind: MediaWiki:Common.css is not applied in mobile view, am I right? Then that’s the issue (rules for geographical coordinates). Is there a special mobile CSS? (Edit:) I assume Templatestyles would be helpful, but need to be activated first. — Speravir – 20:14, 11 June 2018 (UTC)
- Aah, there is MediaWiki:Mobile.css. Could you be so kind and copy the necessary rules from Common.css to it? — Speravir – 21:29, 11 June 2018 (UTC)
- Speravir My specialty are templates and Lua codes, but I have very little understanding of .css files and .js and similar files. - Ah, OK. I originally pinged because I thought it would be a template issue, so bad luck. — Speravir – 00:23, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- In the Wikipedia app for Android or iOS users can create reading lists. The reading lists can be seen on different devices if you are logged in to your account. There is now a browser extension so you can add pages to your reading list from a web browser. At the moment it works with Firefox and Chrome. [155]
- There is a new version of Pywikibot. Pywikibot is a tool to automate tasks on MediaWiki wikis. [156]
Problems
- The MonoBook skin was changed to make it work better for mobile users. This caused some problems. The change was rolled back to fix them. The new version is now back on the wikis. MonoBook users can opt out from the new responsive design. [157]
Changes later this week
- The new filters for edit review tools and interface for watchlists will leave beta. For most wikis this will happen on 18 June. For the rest it will happen on 25 June. [158][159]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 12 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 13 June. It will be on all wikis from 14 June (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the Readers Web team IRC office hour. There you can discuss tools to contribute on the mobile web for the existing MediaWiki skins. The meeting will be on 18 June at 16:00 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 12 June at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 13 June at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- You will be able to move local wiki files to Commons and keep their original data intact. This is planned to come to the first wikis in June.

Something broken with Wikidata units?
Hello,
there seeems to be something amiss with units in the Artwork template (see Category:Woman baking bread-E 25213 for instance), I wonder if it could have been introduced with our revision here [160]. Do you have any idea?
Cheers! Rama (talk) 13:48, 14 June 2018 (UTC)

Template:On OSM Autotranslate vs. Fallback
Hello, your bot changed for template {{On OSM}} (among a lot of others) the usage from {{Fallback}} to {{Autotranslate}}. In Commons:Forum someone complained this would have broken the template (Commons:Forum#Vorlage :On OSM). After the bot change was reverted it seems to work fine, again. Could this have been simply a caching issue? (I did no test, but just noticed the complain.)
On a general note. May I assume that your latest change in Module:Fallback means I could use named parameters in {{Autotranslate}}? Then Help:Autotranslate would need an update. — Speravir – 23:01, 14 June 2018 (UTC)
- Aah. I now see the param documentation in {{Autotranslate}} has changed … — Speravir – 23:03, 14 June 2018 (UTC)
- {{Autotranslate}} when it was written as template only allowed unnamed parameters, but Lua version only did because nobody thought to allow named parameters. Now it can handle any parameters, and I was changing some {{Fallback}}s to {{Autotranslate}}s. {{Fallback}} still use the old fallback mechanism and were never upgraded to use modern Lua code. However, I discovered issues with {{Autotranslate}} which I described in phabricator:T196464. So now I am leaving {{Fallback}}s alone and thinking about just rewriting {{Fallback}} template to use modern Lua code. I have never seen Help:Autotranslate , but I can look at it to see if I can update it. --Jarekt (talk) 02:08, 15 June 2018 (UTC)
Possible problem
I think that colon (punctuation) (:) this template is a problem in croatian language. In croatian language, after colon, the only words with capital letter can be proper nouns (nomen proprium).
So, gramatically, {{hr|Johann Sebastian Bach}}
is correct (displayed as Hrvatski: Johann Sebastian Bach, Johann is proper noun), but {{hr|Skladatelj Johann Sebastian Bach}}
(displayed as Hrvatski: Skladatelj Johann Sebastian Bach) should be written {{hr|skladatelj Johann Sebastian Bach}}
(displayed as Hrvatski: skladatelj Johann Sebastian Bach) (skladatelj = composer, not a proper noun). I hope that I explained good, my english is not so good.
Any idea to solve this?--Ma▀▄Ga 09:42, 10 June 2018 (UTC)
- I suspect most languages have the same issue, but Template:Hr does not force anybody to use upper case. Serbian speakers should use Hrvatski: skladatelj Johann Sebastian Bachinstead ofHrvatski: Skladatelj Johann Sebastian Bach. It is the same way as with capitalizing first letter in e sentence. It is up to people writing it to use it and if someone does no, I can not think of technical means to enforce it. --Jarekt (talk) 03:46, 12 June 2018 (UTC)
- Well, I think that 90% users presume capital letter after the | character. How about idea of changing the colon character in something else?--Ma▀▄Ga 15:37, 12 June 2018 (UTC)
- I do not know croatian language, but in Polish and in English colon seems to be the only punctuation sigh that make sense in this situation. --Jarekt (talk) 03:34, 13 June 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, you're right, in croatian also. Any idea to solve this with somebody's bot?--Ma▀▄Ga 14:11, 16 June 2018 (UTC)

Future changes
- Some old web browsers will not be able to read the Wikimedia wikis. This is because they use an insecure way to connect to them. This means that we get less security for everyone else too. This affects about 0.08% of all traffic to the Wikimedia wikis. This affects for example those who read Wikipedia on a PlayStation 3. [162][163]
- The new filters for edit review tools and interface for watchlists will leave beta. Because there is no new MediaWiki version this week it will happen on 25 June for most wikis. For the rest it will happen in early July. [164][165]
- All wikis that have not already done so will switch to use the Remex parsing library on 5 July. This is to replace Tidy. You can help fix remaining errors. [166]

HI dear Jarekt,
I am writing to ask you whether it would be possible to restore these files concerning some of these portraits of an unknown artist executed between the seventeenth and eighteenth century, the artist since he died for 100 years, the most correct license included in the following files was PD-100 ,,,,
- File:Ritratto di Ferdinando II d'Asburgo.jpg
- File:Ritratto di Raimondo Montecuccoli.jpg
- File:Comte Jean de Werth.png
- File:Ritratto di S.M. Re Vittorio Amedeo III di Savoia.png

--Глнстый Карой (talk) 23:27, 19 June 2018 (UTC)
- Глнстый Карой, Many of those files are low quality, with minimal metadata. If I restore them I would felt obliged to spend too much time at finding better metadata and looking for better images. --Jarekt (talk) 01:37, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
that's why I would like to ask you this favor, but some improved versions of those portraits I own, it is precisely the reason why I'm asking you, I have the best versions, no need to do it thanks to the thought, thanks a lot , but I would just like to ask you to limit yourself to restore them, because I will overwork them,,, could you please at least present the list to the commons undeletion request please ???--79.31.200.33 19:15, 24 June 2018 (UTC)

Structured Data on Commons Newsletter - Summer 2018
Welcome to the newsletter for Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons! You can update your subscription to the newsletter and contribute to the next issue. Do inform others who you think will want to be involved in the project!
- Community updates
- Our dedicated IRC channel: wikimedia-commons-sd webchat
- Since our last newsletter, the Structured Data team has moved into designing and building prototypes for various features. The use of multilingual captions in the UploadWizard and on the file page has been researched, designed, discussed, and built out for use. Behind the scenes, back-end work on search is taking place and designs are being drawn up for the front-end. There will soon be specifications published for the use of the first Wikidata property on Commons, "Depicts," and a prototype is to be released to go along with that.
- A workshop on what Wikidata properties Commons will need. This workshop will be open for the entire month of July 2018 at minimum.
- Join the community focus group!
- Do you want to help out translating messages about Structured Data on Commons from English to your own language? Sign up on the translators page.
- Contribute to the next newsletter.
- Discussions held
- In late February there was a discussion around how Commons generally sees data being modeled.
- The first discussion on copyright and licensing with Commons was held in March. This was a "high level" discussion, there will be a consultation later this summer about the deeper mapping of copyright and licensing in a structured way.
- In April there was an exercise for GLAM partners in metadata and ontology mapping.
- A discussion about the design for Multilingual Captions on the file page took place in May. You can still review the designs and leave feedback.
- There was an IRC office hour in June to discuss progress so far and future plans.
- Wikimania 2018
- Three sessions about Structured Commons are officially scheduled for Wikimania 2018 - Cape Town, South Africa - July 2018.
- Wikimedia Commons and GLAM needs around the world (Friday 20 July, 10:30 local time)
- Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons and knowledge equity (Friday 20 July, 14:00 local time)
- Design challenge workshop: How can multilingual structured metadata bring knowledge equity to Commons? (Friday 20 July, 14:30 local time)
- Structured Data on Commons is also a focus area during the Wikimania 2018 Hackathon. We will, among other things, do 'live' modelling of Wikidata properties for Commons - an offline spin-off of the community consultation taking place on wiki.
- Structured Data on Commons was presented to GLAM audiences during EuropeanaTech 2018 in Rotterdam (15 May 2018) and at the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek Forum in Berlin (4 June 2018).
- Research
Two research projects about Wikimedia Commons are currently ongoing, or in the process of being finished:
- Research:Curation workflows on Wikimedia Commons—a project that seeks to understand the current workflows of Commons contributors who curate media (categorize it, delete it, link to it from other projects, etc.).
- Research:Technical needs of external re-users of Commons media—soliciting feedback from individuals and organizations that re-use Commons content outside of Wikimedia projects, in order to understand their current painpoints and unmet needs.
- Prototypes will be available for Depicts soon.
- Stay up to date!
- Follow the Structured Data on Commons project on Phabricator: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/project/profile/34/
- Subscribe to this newsletter to receive it on a talk page of your own choice.
- Join the next IRC office hour and ask questions to the team! The date for next quarter will be announced soon.

Structured Data Newsletter - Research link fix
Greetings,
The newsletter omitted two interwiki prefixes, breaking the links on non-meta wikis as you might see above. Here are the correct links:
- m:Research:Curation workflows on Wikimedia Commons—a project that seeks to understand the current workflows of Commons contributors who curate media (categorize it, delete it, link to it from other projects, etc.).
- m:Research:Technical needs of external re-users of Commons media—soliciting feedback from individuals and organizations that re-use Commons content outside of Wikimedia projects, in order to understand their current painpoints and unmet needs.
My apologies, I hope you find the corrected links helpful.
Images without source
Hi, you edits of the past 24 hours have added over 200 files to the Images without source. Could you please prevent this from happening? I have spent many hours on this backlog over the past years. I am apparently the only one working on this backlog, although this category contains a lot of blatant copyright violations, some of which have gone undetected for over a decade. This is a very time consuming job. Jcb (talk) 11:41, 7 July 2018 (UTC)
Jarekt. This is an 1893 engraving after the ca. 1892 painting by William Merritt Chase. Chase died in 1916. Charles W. Kurtz, the author of the book in which it was published, died in 1909. And the book does not identify the name of the engraver. If not PD-old-100, what should the copyright tag be? == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 19:39, 7 July 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- WebM video files have smaller file size but still be of the same quality. Creating WebM files will take longer time. [172]
- The new filters for edit review tools and interface for watchlists will leave beta. This was supposed to already have happened but was delayed. For most wikis this will happen on 9 July. For the rest it will happen on 16 July. [173]
- All wikis now use the Remex parsing library instead of Tidy. This could cause errors. You can help fix the errors. [174]
Problems
- When you rolled back an edit it could get both the
Rollback
andUndo
tags. This has been fixed. [175] - Rollbacks from autopatrolled users were not marked as patrolled. This has been fixed. [176]
Changes later this week
- When you edit a link in the visual editor there will be two separate buttons to change which page the link goes to (target) or its text (label). [177][178]
- On the mobile version you can find a link to an editor's contributions from their user page. Now this will work even if they haven't created a user page. [179]
- When you edit a discussion on the mobile version you sometimes get your signature automatically added. This will now not happen if you have already added a signature manually. This is to avoid double signatures. [180]
- Structured discussions toolbars will have more style options. [181]
- When you look at Wikimedia code in Gerrit there will be a new interface. It is on by default for new users. This is also true for developers. This is to make it easier to understand what is happening. [182]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 10 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 11 July. It will be on all wikis from 12 July (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 10 July at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 11 July at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- Today all administrators can edit CSS and JavaScript for the entire wiki. There will be a new user group for editing CSS and JavaScript. Administrators will no longer automatically be able to do this. This is because it is a security risk when all administrator accounts can edit JavaScript even if they never plan to or do not know how it works. You can read more. [183]
- Page previews will be on by default for new accounts. [184]

Hi, Is there a script to convert {{Information}} to {{Photograph}}? It seems it would useful when pictures have an entry in Wikidata, i.e. d:Wikidata:WikiProject Visual arts/Item structure/Photographs, en:List of iconic photographs, etc. I am trying to fix WD entries for these. Regards, Yann (talk) 08:25, 10 July 2018 (UTC)
- Yann I would use Template:Information/subst2photograph template (version of Template:Photograph/subst template) by replacing "{{Information" with "{{subst:Information/subst2photograph|wikidata=Q..." as I did in here. --Jarekt (talk) 11:57, 10 July 2018 (UTC)
- OK, but is there a script to do it, or should it be done manually? Regards, Yann (talk) 13:33, 10 July 2018 (UTC)
- Yann I do not have any scripts to do that, but I would use AutoWikiBrouwser to do the replacements. Also if you can generate a lookup table where one can look up wikidata item id based on file pagename than you can use trick described here to add different wikidata item ids to each page. AWB can be run in bot mode if you have bot account and if not I can run it for you. --Jarekt (talk) 14:00, 10 July 2018 (UTC)

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2017 is open!
You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2017 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in R2.
Dear Jarekt,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2017 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the twelfth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2017) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top 2 from each sub-category.
In the final round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2017.
Round 2 will end on 22 July 2018, 23:59 UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 11:33, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

Adding warning when a painting is liking to a painting series?
Hi Jarek, hope you're doing well. At the moment File:Vincent van Gogh - The Arlesienne - Google Art Project.jpg links to d:Q602980. This is not correct because the Wikidata item is about multiple paintings and the image should link to one of the individual paintings. Happens quite a lot and hard to sort out. Maybe {{Artwork}}} can add a warning and a tracker category making it easier to find and fix these cases? Would also prevent these kinds of mistakes. You probably want to check your recent edits for a couple of examples. Multichill]] (talk) 16:26, 26 August 2018 (UTC)
- There are types of items to which {{Artwork}} should not be linking, like instance of (P31) human (Q5) items. I already check all item's instance of (P31) against black and white lists and add pages that link to wrong type of item to Category:Artworks with wrong Wikidata item. I just added painting series (Q15727816) to the list and will clean up . --Jarekt (talk) 03:34, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
- Multichill, I started correcting files in Category:Artworks with wrong Wikidata item and associated items. The items related to painting series often need a lot of cleaning and new item creation for the individual paintings. Hopefully the list is not going to get much bigger because it takes a lot of time. --Jarekt (talk) 14:38, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
- I told you it was hard ;-)
- It takes quite a bit of time and expertise to sort it out. I often just tag paintings on Wikidata with painting series to sort it out later. Maybe better to make a separate tracker categories for the series? We also have other kind of series like sculpture series. Even cooler logic would be to add a message after the painting series explaining that it needs to be split up and suggest the artworks to choose from (part of contains the other works). Multichill (talk) 15:16, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
- Multichill, Yes it is a mess. I created Category:Artworks with group Wikidata item for images that are linked to "group" items (instance of (P31) set to painting series (Q15727816), sculpture series (Q19479037), artwork series (Q15709879), group of sculptures (Q27031439), group of paintings (Q18573970)). Some of them should be there but others I will be slowly cleaning. Also files in that category has disabled QuickStatements links which is the main way I transfer data to Wikidata (with help of quarry:query/24753). Is Category:Artworks with group Wikidata item what you meant by tracker category? May be the clean up instructions should go into the category description. It is easier, although not as cool. --Jarekt (talk) 13:25, 28 August 2018 (UTC)

Ankry (talk) 14:40, 1 September 2018 (UTC)
- Prawdopodobnie z tej samej publikacji pochodzi File:Józef Piłsudski - List do rektora Uniwersytetu Wileńskiego - 701-001-173-001.jpg. Ankry (talk) 15:12, 1 September 2018 (UTC)
--Jarekt (talk) 17:05, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- There is a new user right for users who can edit CSS and JavaScript for the entire wiki. Before this all admins could edit CSS and JavaScript. This was a security risk. This group is called interface administrators. Administrators can delete user CSS and JavaScript pages. [211][212]
- There will be an A/B test on the Wikipedia mobile website. It starts this week. It tests how we show templates that show information about an article. The test will last two weeks. [213][214]
- You can now use different CSS rules for different skins when you edit templates. This is because of TemplateStyles. [215]
wp10
in ORES is now calledarticlequality
. [216]- When you get a new message on your talk page you get a yellow message in the toolbar. The preference to show or not show this has been removed. [217]
Problems
- UploadWizard had problems with campaigns. Users could not upload files. This has now been fixed. [218]
- You can get a notification when a link is made to a page you created. This has not worked since June. It was fixed last week. [219]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 4 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 5 September. It will be on all wikis from 6 September (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 5 September at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- The Wikimedia Foundation Readers department will work on advanced mobile editing. You can read more about this and other things they plan to work on over the next year. You can also see the presentation.
- The RelatedSites extension will be removed from Wikivoyage.
- Unused projects on the Wikimedia Cloud virtual private server will be removed. This will happen in October. Projects can be marked if they are being used. [220]

Start and end date for time periods from time period (P2348)
This edit has removed the start and end date of the period. I think it was good to have them. What about retrieving them from start time (P580) and end time (P582)? (And best future for Template:Period will be to more translations and date ranges to Wikidata anyway.) --Marsupium (talk) 20:13, 7 September 2018 (UTC)
- Marsupium, I never found them that useful as I do not work with such ancient artifacts. In fact that was the first image where I observed time period (P2348) being used. In {{Artwork}} I display information from the object item, plus the creator and institution items. Other than that I try to minimize number of full items loaded. Maybe the best solution would be to rewrite Template:Period, like this, so labels are based on Wikidata and one can access them with item ID. Than I could run an item from time period (P2348) through this template to get dates. --Jarekt (talk) 02:44, 8 September 2018 (UTC)
- Okay, having this functionality in a separate template (or module) sounds like a good idea. (Start and end time retrieving can perhaps be implemented there later.) Could you indeed run them through Template:Period? Then only a fallback would be needed somewhere for the case Template:Period doesn't know the item. And rewriting the template can be done peu à peu. (I'm still working on Template:i18n/objects.) Thank you! --Marsupium (talk) 10:24, 8 September 2018 (UTC)
Structured Data feedback - structured licensing and copyright
Was it a "script error" in Module:Kinship?
Was this a "script error" in Module:Kinship? It would have been good to note if it broke something somewhere. If so probably because |1=
wasn't set, and I would prefer to break things then since it is a required parameter and its lack makes the use of the template pointless. --Marsupium (talk) 11:16, 10 September 2018 (UTC)
- I do not remember much about this "fix", but I think what happen was that I was cleaning up Category:Pages with script errors and mostly fixing issues with my codes that occasionally send files there. There were some "script errors" which disappeared after that change. I guess a better fix would be to fix input parameters to template, and/or add some tracking category. Maybe we should undo that change and see what breaks. --Jarekt (talk) 12:51, 10 September 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- When you added or edited a template with the visual editor the input boxes were very big. This has been fixed. The input boxes will now be smaller until you click on them. Then they will change size to fit the text. [221]
Problems
- Some diffs showed lines in the wrong order. This was fixed last week. [222]
- Marking a cross-wiki notification as read didn't work every time. The other wiki was not updated. This has now been fixed. [223]
<maplink>
did not work for a few days. This was because of a bug. This has now been fixed. [224]{{subst:REVISIONUSER}}
is used by some templates. For a period edits saved with{{subst:REVISIONUSER}}
would save the previous user's name and not your username. This is now fixed. Edits made before the bug was fixed will still be wrong and need to be corrected. [225]- When you move a page the title still shows the old page name. The developers are working on fixing this. [226]
Changes later this week
- Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for up to an hour on 12 September and 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. The time when you can't edit might be shorter than an hour. You can read more about this.
- Because of the data centre test there will be no new version of MediaWiki this week. Changes for this week will come next week instead.
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 11 Septmber at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 12 September at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- The developers work on making the wikis work better on mobile phones. There is a list of common problems when making content easier to read in the mobile view. You can add things to the page and ask others to help.

Links to Holocaust denial websites
When you created the Stroop Report and pages for some of the individual images, such as File:Stroop Report - Warsaw Ghetto Uprising 13.jpg, you included links and references to Holocaust denial websites, including the Institute for Historical Review and a web blog called "Holocaust Controversies". I realize that the sourcing standard for Commons seems to be considerably lower than would be accepted at Wikipedia, but linking to Holocaust denying material should not be acceptable. (I don't know if you knew that these sites promulgated Holocaust denial—they are disguised to look legitimate, and Google often returns Holocaust denying material over legitimate websites). Catrìona (talk) 14:19, 3 October 2018 (UTC)
- Catrìona, that is a good point. I did not realized any of the websites I sourced were denial websites. However, I am searching for the highest quality version of each photograph I can find, and if holocaust denial websites host them than that is where I will get them. I am on vacation at the moment with very slow connection, but I agree that we should remove such links. If you can do it it would be great, but if not I will look into it after I come back. Thanks for pointing it out. --Jarekt (talk) 00:56, 4 October 2018 (UTC)
- I have no problem with sourcing images from the best quality version, my issue is with using these websites as sources in image descriptions (such as this one—The Journal of Historical Review is a known Holocaust denying "journal"). Holocaust deniers frequently use well known images such as the en:Captured Hehalutz fighters photograph and en:A Jewish boy surrenders in Warsaw to "prove" that the Holocaust must not be that bad if some of the people photographed (allegedly) survived. Catrìona (talk) 02:00, 5 October 2018 (UTC)
- Catrìona, I am still traveling, but if you believe information is true and can provide alternative sources to support the descriptions, than please feel free to swap the sources. Otherwise I will look into it latter this week. --Jarekt (talk) 00:19, 10 October 2018 (UTC)

Idea for reference_url in template:Artwork
Hello,
do you think if would be feasible to use the qualifier "title" (P1476) of property "described at URL" (P973) to nicely render the link to the reference? I tried to do something myself before pestering you, it did not break anything but did not seem to do anything either [242]. I was checking the progress on File:Taweret-AF 2346-IMG 8029-gradient.jpg, where the URL http://cartelen.louvre.fr/cartelen/visite?srv=car_not_frame&idNotice=19824 could render as "La déesse Touéris".
Thank you in any case for your very impressive work, and good continuation! Rama (talk) 12:39, 11 September 2018 (UTC)
- When designing code on how to use wikidata properties, I always look at the qualifiers in use any try to concentrate on the ones people actually use. Looking at qualifiers of reference URL (P854) it seems like only 16 files use title (P1476) qualifier. So if you think you going to use it on your files (and maybe start a trend), we can add it but otherwise it is not going to make much of a difference. --Jarekt (talk) 12:48, 11 September 2018 (UTC)
- I will look at Module:Wikidata_art. --Jarekt (talk) 12:50, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

I think the issue is that my getPropertyQual function does not handle "Monolingual text" qualifiers, since I never needed such functionality. I can add it this evening, or you can beforehand. Just do it on Module:Wikidata art/sandbox version. --Jarekt (talk) 13:38, 11 September 2018 (UTC)
- Right, will do! Thank you very much for your interest and support! I hope I eventually come to a sufficient understanding of your code base to contribute useful things. Cheers! Rama (talk) 16:00, 11 September 2018 (UTC)
- PS: on the other hand I have no idea what the issue of "Monolingual text" qualifiers in getPropertyQual entails, so I will depend on you for this, but of course there is no rush. Cheers! Rama (talk) 09:58, 12 September 2018 (UTC)

- Comment Jarekt, for reference URL (P854) you're right. For described at URL (P973) the equivalent query has just timed out for me. BTW: I'd also like this feature I think :-) Cheers, --Marsupium (talk) 00:30, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
- Marsupium you are right, Rama asked about described at URL (P973) and I looked up reference URL (P854). I will be camping this week, leaving soon, I so I can not look at this. I am a bit confused because I thought I added titles and support to text+language data type to getPropertyQual function, but now I do not see it, in the current code, so will have to do some digging around to see how it got lost. --Jarekt (talk) 02:26, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
- I toyed a little bit with the code in your sandbox but at some point you reverted it and I was afraid that I had messed with something...
- Incidentally, User:Harmonia Amanda told me that "Title" might not be the ideal property from which to extract a string to prettify links; there might be another property to take into account (either in priority or in combination to the title). I'll try to ask her if she can provite actionable information on the topic.
- Cheers! Rama (talk) 06:31, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
- Hello, just to further the discussion a little but, is there anything useful that can be done with the code I had drafted here, or anything else more to the point that I could do to help? Cheers! Rama (talk) 09:17, 10 October 2018 (UTC)
- PS: a aside, I think that template "Art Photo" has a small snag: its "Location" field is fed from "Collection" in Wikidata, which produces less than ideal results when museum have items of loan from other institutions. I'd be happy to give a hand if that does not cause more worries than it solves. Cheers! Rama (talk) 21:08, 10 October 2018 (UTC)

Rama, about "Art Photo"'s small snag: That part of code is the same for {{Art photo}} and {{Artwork}} templates. Can you provide examples where current approach does not work, and what would be an output you rather see. --Jarekt (talk) 12:27, 16 October 2018 (UTC)
- Hello, and thank you for your time and attention!
- I do not seem to be able to see the titles in the reference as the code should now implement it, I do not know why (I have tried different languages, Ctrl-F5ing the pages, previews...). Maybe something that the servers will catch up to.
- The little issue I have with collections and locations can be seen at File:Paris as a shepherd by Auguste Renoir-MG 2858-IMG 1078-gradient.jpg, for instance: the work is in the collection of the FNAC (Fonds national d'art contemporain), which lent it to the Musem of Grenble, where it is on display. This is how things are described in Wikidata, but {{Artwork}} translates this as the location being both the FNAC and Grenoble, which makes no sense. I think we should source "Location" from P276 but not from P195.
- Thank you again, good continuation to you, and a very enjoyable Wikiconference! Rama (talk) 19:04, 16 October 2018 (UTC)
- I have found and corrected the problem: you included my code for the URLs, but not the one you have written in the internal functions to feed monolingual text to my code. I added your code to the production version of Artwork and now everything seems to be in order. I hope I did not break anything.
- I also tried to add support for online catalogues, the code I tested in the sandbox seemed to run fine so I copied in into Artwork as well. Meanwhile Marsupium has already found ways to improve it so I'll look into this.
- Cheers! Rama (talk) 16:56, 19 October 2018 (UTC)
Template:Wikidata person has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this template, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. |

Thanks!
Thank you for taking some time out of your day on Sunday to help look into the properties needed on Wikidata. I very much appreciate it! Ping me anytime if you have more questions about the properties table as they occur. Happy editing to you. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 16:56, 23 October 2018 (UTC)
- Keegan, always happy to help. BTW, I began process of proposing new properties at d:Wikidata:Property proposal/Sister projects. Current proposal is a bit of an odd-ball and if you have ideas of how to better explain it, I am open to suggestions. I will also look into writing some bare bones Module:Information to be the engine behind {{Information}} and which will be easier to integrate with structured data. Maybe I can ping you once I have a sandbox version, to make sure it is heading in the right direction as far as future integration with structured data is concerned. --Jarekt (talk) 17:21, 23 October 2018 (UTC)

"Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio - Nativity with St Francis and St Lawrence - WGA04193" file
Hi Jarekt. First, sorry for my English. I'm a Caravaggio scholar (for more info, see http://caravaggio400.blogspot.com/p/articoli-e-recensioni-di-michele-cuppone.html). I want to give a better Caravaggio's "Nativity" picture than the one you uploaded (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/de/Michelangelo_Merisi_da_Caravaggio_-_Nativity_with_St_Francis_and_St_Lawrence_-_WGA04193.jpg). Even if your picture was taken in 1967 and the one I send you in 1964, mine is more brilliant and has a higher resolution. I think it could be better, for scholars and simple readers, to have a better photo, even because the painting was stolen in 1969 and then this is the only way to see it. In addiction, you can change the year from "1609" to "1600" (or, at least, in "1600-1609"): new documents reveal that the Nativity was paintend earlier than we've always thought. Thank you
Cuppoz (talk) 14:53, 25 October 2018 (UTC)Michele
- Michele, thank you for the upload. I clean it up a bit. We have several versions of the painting in Category:Nativity with St. Francis and St. Lawrence by Caravaggio but I think yours is the best. --Jarekt (talk) 16:41, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
photo chellenge
Hello, You added new params to the mainpage, which is broken now. I added a hotfix in form of a few divs (didn't checked the other mainpages where the template is used). Please look at the old revisions and fix the issue (I have no time right now to look into the parser functions/css you added). --Steinsplitter (talk) 16:53, 28 October 2018 (UTC)
- Steinsplitter, I was looking at old revision in Chrome and Firefox and on different size windows and I do not see any issues. What should I be looking for? Also my edit did not add any css or new parser functions, It was more of a switch from showing either announcement of photo challenge to showing either one, both or none. I also unified some parameter names so they follow similar rules. --Jarekt (talk) 01:58, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
- here, the green border (Tested also with Edge). And at the currently mainpage the grean border is 2px instead of one. The issue does not exist if two boxes are shown (or the rev before your change to the template is used). --Steinsplitter (talk) 07:15, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

Unsuitable behavior
Your contempt for my work might be considered aggression. I do not believe it and I'm sure you have the desire to do well. Be more constructive and do not forget that a administrator must give the example of his qualities by his actions. I want, in the moment, forget this little misunderstanding --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 14:04, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
- Archaeodontosaurus, Your work as photographer is superb, but unusual layout of the description pages is just confusing and unnecessary. File pages are suppose to be as uniform as possible to help others navigate them and they are not suppose to have htlm tables or other unusual formatting as it is interfering with regular templates. Your reverts go against "You agreed to allow others to modify your work here. So let them." mantra explained in Commons:Ownership of pages and files. --Jarekt (talk) 14:42, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
- The addition does not interfere with anything. By cons it comes over the automatic title and it is more complete. This addition also has the merit of being universal and apply to any image. I claim the right to be able to improve the work on COMMONS and I encourage the others to do it and this for all the types of image the debate having gone beyond the model ArtWork. Removing freedom of expression will kill the project. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 17:36, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
Standardisation request for File:London tram cars.jpg, and a query..
I added some more information using {{Information field}}s but when I queried Fae on the Commons IRC channel about there being a project to track what sorts of fields were being added using this, they suggested I talk to you.
In respect of this media, if there's a more "appropriate" template this could be converted to use it should perhaps be converted to that, if you can suggest which one to use.
The more generalised query, is to do with a concern about their being the potential for collision of usage between, various of what might be the same named "information field" name. I will also not mine were in good faith added in English, and thus are not necessarily going to be automatically translated for users whose language is not English, Commons is multilingual isn't it?
If there was a version of {{Information field}} which utilised an appropriate Wikidata property perhaps ( which could be translated) I might feel slightly happier. Maybe is this something you could feedback into the Structured Data implementation? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 19:44, 7 November 2018 (UTC)
- ShakespeareFan00, "Other fields" field in {{Information}} was mostly meant for creating other templates with additional fields or for adding preferred attribution line. People use it for adding other fields directly to the files but a prefered solution would be to use proper existing template. Some alternative infoboxes are listed in Commons:Infobox_templates. {{Artwork}} is at the moment most powerful as it can fetch most of the metadata from Wikidata, if you have item there devoted to your object. If I was uploading now file like File:London tram cars.jpg, which is based to a specific record in some official repository, I would create unique item for it on Wikidata and use QuickStatements to upload all the metadata and than use {{Artwork|Wikidata=..|...}}. To fix infobox of File:London tram cars.jpg without using wikidata, I would also use {{Artwork}} and try to map fields to the fields there. {{Artwork}} does not have a "publisher" (I am planning to add it and {{Artwork/sandbox}} already has it), so that field would have to be added by {{Information field}}, or for that file it should probably go into author field. --Jarekt (talk) 20:32, 7 November 2018 (UTC)
- Used {{Photograph}}; but left the existing {{Description}} for comparison. I can remove the latter if you approve. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 20:51, 7 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi, Why did you delete this? I think that Creator templates should not ever be deleted, even if not used. Beside there is an issue with the place of death. Any idea? Regards, Yann (talk) 13:26, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
- Yann I have no idea why I have deleted it a year and half ago. I rarely delete non-empty creator templates. I might have been working on removing the unused ones after their metadata was moved to Wikidata, under assumption that they are at this point trivial to recreate. --Jarekt (talk) 13:38, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

- As far as I can see, the files are still in Category:Files with no machine-readable source. Jcb (talk) 17:35, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
- Jcb, I do not know how files end up in Category:Files with no machine-readable source, all I know is how Category:Images without source is assigned. I looked at 2 files: File:Adriano, 117-138 ca, collez. albani.JPG which is not in Category:Files with no machine-readable source and File:'The Raising of the Cross' by Tania Dey.JPG which is. Both files use Template:Art photo with "source={{Own}}" and I did minor edits to both to make sure it is not a cache issue. Their html source codes have identical:
<tr valign="top"> <td id="fileinfotpl_src" class="fileinfo-paramfield" lang="en">Source</td> <td> <span class="int-own-work" lang="en">Own work</span></td> </tr>
, so it seems like that directory is assigned based on something else. --Jarekt (talk) 18:57, 15 November 2018 (UTC)- See meta:Talk:File_metadata_cleanup_drive/How_to_fix_metadata#Mystery_files_in_c:Category:Files_with_no_machine-readable_source. --Jarekt (talk) 19:13, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi, Jarekt. Can you explain the purpose of this edit to Template:Category redirect? On Category:Weather and climate in Mauritania, it seems to be just displaying text, which doesn't make sense to me. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 08:25, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
--jdx Re: 10:16, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
- Auntof6 and User:Jdx Thanks for alerting me about issues with this edit. I reverted it for time being and filed phabricator:T210496 bug report. The intention was to remove categories with {{Category redirect}} from the new Special:UnusedCategories list. --Jarekt (talk) 14:06, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks, Jarekt. That is a cool function. Do you know if it has been or will be implemented on the Wikipedias, too? --Auntof6 (talk) 19:02, 28 November 2018 (UTC)
- I do not know much about this function other than what I learned from announcement in the message above. --Jarekt (talk) 21:06, 28 November 2018 (UTC)
looking up Entities by external identifiers
Hello my friend,
It seems that T99899 (Allow looking up Entities by external identifiers) has been implemented.
Do you know how to use this feature ?
In fact, when a species category has no Wikidata link, I would like in lua to lookup for an item having P373 (Commons category)==CurrentCategory
Best regards Liné1 (talk) 13:24, 28 November 2018 (UTC)
- Liné1, No I did not see any new Lua functions to support that feature --Jarekt (talk) 03:09, 3 December 2018 (UTC)
Mickiewicz
Ankry (talk) 11:11, 2 December 2018 (UTC)
- Ankry Adam Mickiewicz (Q79822) went through a lot of changes since my edit. But you are right that the current data results in strange output. I had the same issues with other items. I fixed it for Creator template with local overwrites, but other infobox templates on other projects might not be fixed that way. The issue is that at the moment I derive nationality from country of citizenship (P27) and ethnic group (P172), but those are not perfect and the code do not allow more than two. At some point I proposed to create new property "Nationality" to fix that issue, but it was rejected. So at the moment there is no way to set Nationality. --Jarekt (talk) 21:07, 2 December 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Admins will not be able to unblock themselves if they are blocked by someone other than themselves. This is because it can cause damage if someone else takes over an admin account and other admins can't block them. If this is a problem for your community you can report it on Phabricator. You can also ask questions on Meta. There is a discussion on Phabricator about how to solve this if two admins fight with each other on a small wiki. [262]
- Small SVG images are now bigger when you see them in MediaViewer. [263]
- You can go to a section from the edit summary by clicking on the section name. Before this you had to click on the arrow. [264]
- When you jumped to a footnote that was referenced several times in an article it could be difficult to see where you were in the text. Now there are jump marks and highlights to help you find your way back. [265][266]
Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 5 December at 16:00 (UTC) and at 23:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Artwork categories
Hi Jarek, shouldn't Category:Artworks with photograph information and similar categories be hidden and have an intro that it's set by a template? Multichill (talk) 16:29, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
- Multichill, I think it is now Fixed. --Jarekt (talk) 18:20, 6 December 2018 (UTC)

Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 December. It will be on all wikis from 13 December (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 12 December at 16:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- New accounts will need passwords that are at least 8 characters long. Admins, interface admins, bureaucrats, oversighters, CentralNotice admins, global renamers, check users, stewards and some other user groups will need passwords that are at least 10 characters long. This is because an attacker could cause damage to the wikis if they took over these accounts. [267][268]
- When you hover over a footnote it will show you the reference as a pop-up. This is so you don't have to jump down to the bottom of the page to see a reference. This will happen in 2019. Some wikis already have gadgets that do this. You will be able to turn it off. [269]

Requests
Hi Jarek, I have two great requests: 1) Could you please rename this photo as well? People are still making this mistake, my guess also because Google Graphics displays this pic in this way because of the file's name at Commons. Removing „Skryszewska” should do the trick 2) Problem with the file which was overwritten Thank you! Boston9 (talk) 13:31, 16 December 2018 (UTC)

Tech News
- Because of the holidays the next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 7 January 2019.
Recent changes
- Some templates that show notices about the content of the page will now be shown on the mobile website. In many cases they were hidden before. [270][271]
- Admins can no longer unblock themselves, except for self-blocks. A blocked admin can block the user who blocked them but no one else. This is so no one can block all admins on a wiki without being stopped. [272]
- The ParserMigration extension has been removed. It compared the result of two versions of the MediaWiki wikitext parsing pipeline. It was used when we moved to the Remex parsing library instead of Tidy.
Problems
<ref>
tags can use parameters such as "name" or "group". For example<ref name="adams" group="books">
. If a<ref>
tag has more than two parameters all parameters are ignored. You don't get a warning that they don't work. This will soon be fixed. [273]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 18 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 19 December. It will be on all wikis from 20 December (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 19 December at 16:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- The Wikimedia Foundation Android app team are working on making it easier to edit on mobile phones. You can read more about these plans. If you have an Android phone and speak at least two languages you can help testing in English. Tell Dchen (WMF) you want to be part of the testing by writing on her talk page or email her.
-
tiles.wmflabs.org
andwma.wmflabs.org
will stop working. They have no maintainers and run an old operating system. Tools which use it could stop working. This includes the mapnik gadget, hill shading, and hike and bike layers. New maintainers could help out and keep it going. [274]

The Structured Data on Commons team has begun beta testing of the first feature, multilingual file captions, and all community members are invited to test it out. Captions is based on designs discussed with the community[275][276] and the team is looking forward to hearing about testing. If all goes well during testing, captions will be turned on for Commons around the second week of January, 2019.
Multilingual captions are plain text fields that provide brief, easily translatable details of a file in a way that is easy to create, edit, and curate. Captions are added during the upload process using the UploadWizard, or they can be added directly on any file page on Commons. Adding captions in multiple languages is a simple process that requires only a few steps.
The details:
- There is a help page available on how to use multilingual file captions.
- Testing will take place on Beta Commons. If you don’t yet have an account set up there, you’ll need one.
- Beta Commons is a testbed, and not configured exactly like the real Commons site, so expect to see some discrepancies with user interface (UI) elements like search.
- Structured Data introduces the potential for many important page changes to happen at once, which could flood the recent changes list. Because of this, Enhanced Recent Changes is enabled as it currently is at Commons, but with some UI changes.
- Feedback and commentary on the file caption functionality are welcome and encouraged on the discussion page for this post.
- Some testing has already taken place and the team are aware of some issues. A list of known issues can be seen below.
- If you discover a bug/issue that is not covered in the known issues, please file a ticket on Phabricator and tag it with the “Multimedia” tag. Use this link to file a new task already tagged with "Multimedia."
Known issues:
- Search is not currently working on Beta Commons. Search is not needed for testing captions, but service should be restored soon.
- Language name display inconsistencies in multilingual file captions
- Language names for multilingual File captions can run into the caption value in the mobile view
- Deleting a caption field that has text that exceeds the limit does not re-enable the "publish" button
- "Edit" tab for past revisions should be "restore"
- When using the back button, recently added captions sometimes don't display in Chrome
- File Captions can't be edited on mobile browsers
- Wrong font weight for some language labels on SDC captions box
Thanks!

Hi Jarek, Marry Christmas! Short question: is this permissible in our project? Boston9 (talk) 10:20, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
- I think it is, but I corrected the license and infobox. --Jarekt (talk) 04:33, 27 December 2018 (UTC)
Category:Person_categories_without_DEFAULTSORT has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. Thank you! |
