Dear Jane023,
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2013, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again a few minutes of your time.

Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 365,000 pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 50 countries around the world, becoming the largest photography competition to have ever taken place.

You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet).

If you'd like to start editing relevant Wikipedia articles and share your knowledge with other people, please go to the Wikipedia Welcome page for more information, guidance, and help.

To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey. Please fill in this short survey in your own language, and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2013.

Hi Jane, I do not understand your change and would like to revert it. But first I want to ask you. Thanks and regards. --Oursana (talk) 12:40, 19 December 2013 (UTC)

It's quite simple really - I just created a category for the civic guard itself in order to keep all of the relevant images together. You will notice that the category is itself in the meta-category of Amsterdam civic guard. I have been categorizing the schutterstukken by schutterij. Jane023 (talk) 08:50, 20 December 2013 (UTC)

Is this really a 1891 banknote? --Ephraim33 (talk) 09:28, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

depends how you calculate the age; by date of design or date of impression. The exhibition where I took pictures was a chronological overview of their Dutch banknotes. Jane023 (talk) 07:48, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

Image licence removal

During a history check I discovers that with this edit you removed the licence tag from the image. In future please be a little more careful and check your edits for errors such as this because it caused the image to appear in the category Category:Media without a license: needs history check and could have been deleted for lack of a licence. It just causes more unnecessary work for other editors. Thanks Ww2censor (talk) 16:40, 29 October 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up. Jane023 (talk) 17:43, 29 October 2014 (UTC)

Don't Coreference Disambiguation pages

Hi Jane! I noticed you've matched to quite a lot of Wikimedia disambiguation pages on https://tools.wmflabs.org/mix-n-match/

I think that's wrong:

  • Eg Sandrart:Flavius Sabinus should not be matched to Titus Flavius Sabinus because that's a disambiguation page. Instead, you should read the disambiguation page and Sandrart (it says "Zollerheber in Asia und Geldverleiher bei den Helvetiern; vgl. Neue Pauly, Bd. IV, Sp. 550" but I don't grok German), and pick one of the persons only.
  • Eg you matched RKD artists:Il Bambaia and RKD artists:Bambaia to Bambaia.
    • Both of these are disambiguation pages in RKD that say "See: Busti, Agostino". The Wikipedia disambiguation page "Bambaia" also lists Agostino Busti, and clearly that's the correct match. So you should match to Agostino Busti
    • I'm not sure it's useful to match RKD disambiguation pages to anything, really. We should match persons to persons, not disambiguation pages to disambiguation pages.

--Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 18:47, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi Vladimir, thanks for looking at Mix-n-Match. The problem you are seeing is a problem with the downloaded database from RKD. There is no way to just download the actual entries, so all of the doubles (what you call "rkd disambiguation pages") are in the downloaded copy.
I'm now writing to Magnus: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Mix%27n%27match#Filter_out_Disambiguation_entries_and_Un-notable_Persons
Though I agree that we would ideally only want one unique rkd id number to link to one unique q number, the reality is messier than that. Matching in Mix-n-Match is not easy, but any match is better than none.
A correct match is better than none. How did you know RKD's "Bambaia" is the same as Wikidata's "Bambaia" unless you opened both pages and read about it? Then you'll see RKD's is really about Agostino Busti https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q395600, and not the disambig page you matched
Also, we would ideally want all spellings that have pages in the rkd to be listed in the ALTNAMES list of the q number.
Yes, but just linking disambigs leaves the ALTNAMES deeply hiden. I did add "Il Bambaia" to Agostino Busti (and "Bambaia" was already there, in another language)
I am not sure what you were looking at that you stumbled across my matches. Are you looking at Mix-N-Match or at Wikidata through queries? Jane023 (talk) 18:54, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
Mix-n-match has a tab called "Disambiguations", I looked at it. Cheers! Vladimir

Vladimir, I don't open both pages before matching, but go from the meta data displayed. If the metadata displayed is incorrect, which does happen occasionally, this is usually because between the moment that the rkd database was loaded into Mix-N-Match and the moment of the match, something has changed on the side of the automatically matched q number. Spot checking these shows that it is actually quite rare. I am flattered you think I could open two records for each match but I have done tens of thousands of these just by clicking through the Mix-n-Match screen. I only occasionally open the links. Jane023 (talk) 19:30, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

So in this case you matched based on name only? But names are very often ambiguous! A brief example: in this ULAN id violation report, most of the equal names are different people (eg Charles Bridges (Q5075775) vs Charles Bridges (Q18641990)) --Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 07:27, 14 February 2015 (UTC)
Don't worry, I am well aware of the ambiguity of name-spellings. I apologize for not documenting each matching decision. Please be aware that changes in the data can go two ways: Wikipedia pages that once were articles can become disambigs, and so forth. In this particular instance I have no idea. I also don't think it's important enough to dissect. Jane023 (talk) 10:09, 14 February 2015 (UTC)
Also, though I am a very active Mix-n-Matcher for both rkd and ULAN, I am not the only matcher, though on any given "sync" request from Mix-n-Match that I make, it may appear as if I was the matcher, because the bulk update to Wikidata was made in my name. Jane023 (talk) 10:12, 14 February 2015 (UTC)
I'm looking at the user name for each match in mix-n-match. My thinking is that a wrong match is harmful since the error will easily be propagated.
The only way to make sure a match is correct is to examine more data about the person, which will necessarily lead you to a real person page. Eg look at ULAN coref data (potential match/mismatch is recorded by their editors): that's good data that gives you some basis for decision. A name alone does not. --Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 19:39, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
Well actually for women it often does! You would be surprised how few women are in Wikidata at all that match up to anything in the ULAN with a female name. If they're not a female sports hero or actress, they can probably be matched on name alone. I do however check these in Wikidata, because generally I am able to add a few more properties to the Wikidata item based on the linked Wikipedia article. Sorry if I still haven't answered your questions enough but I guess I still am a bit unclear about what you are trying to achieve exactly. If you just want to complain that my matching ability is not 100% accurate, then I guess I can't help you very much. I still don't believe it's necessary to open both links on each match in order to create a good working system of interlinked databases. Jane023 (talk) 07:28, 30 March 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Félicie Schneider - The Little Nurse N08611-867-lr-1.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Females in RKDartists matched

Hi Jane, a question about this graph https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Females_in_matched_RKDartists.jpg I was wondering, did you also add the RKD ID's to these wikipages in Authority control?

Bots

You are receiving this message because a technical change may affect a bot, gadget, or user script you have been using. The breaking change involves API calls. This change has been planned for two years. The WMF will start making this change on 30 June 2015. A partial list of affected bots can be seen here: https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2015-June/081931.html This includes all bots that are using pywikibot compat. Some of these bots have already been fixed. However, if you write user scripts or operate a bot that uses the API, then you should check your code, to make sure that it will not break.

What, exactly, is breaking? The "default continuation mode" for action=query requests to api.php will be changing to be easier for new coders to use correctly. To find out whether your script or bot may be affected, then search the source code (including any frameworks or libraries) for the string "query-continue". If that is not present, then the script or bot is not affected. In a few cases, the code will be present but not used. In that case, the script or bot will continue working.

This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015.

If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code!

Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning.

Do you need help with your own bot or script? Ask questions in e-mail on the mediawiki-api or wikitech-l mailing lists. Volunteers at m:Tech or w:en:WP:Village pump (technical) or w:en:Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard may also be able to help you.

Are you using someone else's gadgets or user scripts? Most scripts are not affected. To find out if a script you use needs to be updated, then post a note at the discussion page for the gadget or the talk page of the user who originally made the script.
