Hi, did you revert CommonsDelinker for all files you restored? If not, please do so. User:Natuur12 and I have spent many hours restoring them one by one, carefully restoring the usage of each file. So please do the same for the files you restored. Jcb (talk) 22:15, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

@Jcb: Will do. I can just go from my deletion log. INeverCry 22:36, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

File:Logo of the Islamic Front (Syria).svg

Hi INeverCry. You deleted File:Flag of Ahrar ash-Sham.svg per Commons:Deletion requests/File:Flag of Ahrar ash-Sham.svg. I cannot remember flag image exactly, but I am wondering if File:Logo of the Islamic Front (Syria).svg is the same as the logo that appeared on the flag. For reference, both files were uploaded by the same editor and are in the same file format. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:45, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

They're different. @Mhhossein: What's your opinion on the TOO of this one? INeverCry 06:48, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for pinging me. What I see here is an Arabic Calligraphy (not a simple or regular typeface) along with some simple geometric shapes. So the question is that whether we can say that both elements make the logo complex per my reasoning here. --Mhhossein (talk) 11:55, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
This is very widely used, so any TOO argument would have to be really strong. I see the above file getting kept in a deletion request. INeverCry 19:52, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
Which file has survived deletion? Our case here is very similar to this logo which "does not contain a sufficient amount of original and creative authorship to be protected by copyright," according to en:U.S. Copyright Office. So, if we consider that the calligraphic text is not protected (is it?) it can be concluded that the logo in question can be released into PD. However I wonder how we the Islamic front can be the author! --Mhhossein (talk) 04:59, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
The question of right to release under copyright by a terrorist/rebel group is interesting, but the file has to be seen as above TOO, otherwise simplicity wins out. In my experience, widely used files tend to attract keep votes in the absence of extremely compelling delete rationales. The daesh DR I did got quick "simple text" votes from the uploaders. It was a waste of my time. INeverCry 05:23, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
This one was waste of time? You did not answer to the question in my previous comment. Can calligraphy texts be protected? --Mhhossein talk 18:57, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
Wow! I expected a keep there. Calligraphy can be copyrighted/above TOO in most countries. There are some countries, like the US and Germany, where TOO is high, but that wouldn't affect the files we're discussing. The COM:FOP/COM:L laws in most countries where Arabic is the official language or widely spoken are usually strict - pretty much none of them allow any FoP. COM:TOO has no entries on countries like Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, etc. That can be good in a DR as it may invoke COM:PRP. It's unfortunate that we don't have TOO case law on these countries though. INeverCry 19:11, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
So, the file has at least two problems; 1) We are doubtful about the status of copy right of the files attributed to terrorist/rebel groups such as Islamic Front, which is our case here. 2) There's a calligraphic element in the logo which adds to our doubt. What makes us don't act based on COM:PRP. --Mhhossein talk 13:57, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
The deletion request discussion and votes and the closing administrator make a big difference in these cases too. Some admins lean toward keep, some to delete. Without clear TOO law in Iraq, Syria, Libya, Yemen, Afghanistan, etc, it can be tough getting a deletion. The other problem is that none of the people participating in DRs for these logos can read them, so they really can't tell what's calligraphy and what's simple handwriting a lot of the time - or they're defending their own upload... INeverCry 16:47, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
Anyway, I said what I knew. --Mhhossein talk 05:54, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
I hear ya. INeverCry 06:06, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

Aurlogo-1.jpg

Dear INeverCry, On an advice of Robert Bruce I'm contacting you re. deletion of Aurora Fine Chemicals Group Logo (Aurlogo-1.jpg) Dear Alex, Most likely the characterization stemmed from the fact that you have no entry on any of our encyclopedias for your company, if I had to guess. I have no control over the deletion decisions made by our editors on Commons, so you'll need to speak directly to the administrator who deleted the image for more information or to ask him to reconsider his decision, as detailed in my last message. Messaging him on his user talk page would be your best bet. Yours sincerely, Robert Bruce Dear INeverCry, I'm a little bit surprised and also confused about your decision to delete a picture of Aurora's logo. Our chemical company name "Aurora Fine Chemicals" wasn't chosen randomly. As you know Aurora means dawn in Latin, and the goddess of dawn in Roman mythology and Latin poetry. Aurora renews herself every morning and flies across the sky, announcing the arrival of the sun. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aurora_(mythology) Rising sun in a framed by benzene ring picture should symbolize beginning of a new chemical company. That was my logo idea which I created for my company I founded in 1995(!). Since then our logo with small modifications by professionals has been used in all our brochures, business cards, web sites, exhibition's materials etc. Please let me know and I'll provide you with these evidences immediately. I'll also send a professional picture of it if you like. Please let me know what's that makes you to stereotype our picture as "outside the scope of Commons". Please re-consider deleting our logo picture. Looking forward to your reasonable decision. Again, thank you for your kind assistance. Best regards, Alex

Hi Alex. File:Aurora logo(Converted).svg looks a lot better than the logo I deleted. Feel free to re-upload the one I deleted, but in png or svg format, as PDF isn't a good format for logos. INeverCry 18:53, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

OTRS request on a couple of files

Hi, we received an OTRS ticket on the files STAS.jpg and Targa_palazzo_Marzi.jpg, that have been deleted. As I don't have the admin rights, so can you please check for me what these photos look like, and if there is any issue in accepting their publication? Can you also check for me the other ones as well that you deleted from the User:Massimo_Marzi's contributions (I suppose that we will receive more OTRS tickets from the user)? Thanks a lot. --Ruthven (msg) 08:20, 18 August 2016 (UTC)

The STAS image is of a man speaking at a red table, and looks to be from the 50s or 60s. The Targa image is a photo of a marble plaque dedicated to Giovanni Marzi. Other than that, he's got about 25 deleted edits, so I don't have the time describe that many. The Targa image was deleted by Alan, along with a few others, while I nuked Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Massimo Marzi. The alternative is that you can just request undeletion of the bunch, check them, and if any need to be re-deleted, you can have me do that. That would be quicker probably. I do that with other OTRS members: they request undeletion, and then tag duplicates and out of scope stuff to be re-deleted. INeverCry 17:02, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
Thanks a lot INeverCry, I'll just request the undeletion for the OTRS that Massimo Marzi sends us; from the title of the other deleted images, some are probably copyviol so it is useless to spend time reviewing every picture. --Ruthven (msg) 10:17, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

Caribbean visa image

He INeverCry, 2 weeks ago, we had a discussion on the deletion of a file on caribbean visa from the Netherlands. I have taken up the matter with the proposer of the deletion (User_talk:Stefan2#Caribbean_visa_image), but he seems not to be editing at the moment. Could you re-assess your deletion decision in light of the arguments presented there? I'd love to be more specific in rebutting the original deletion proposal by Stefan4/Stefan2, but his argument for deletion ("Bogus copyright tag") was not sufficiently specific to do so... L.tak (talk) 23:02, 18 August 2016 (UTC)

Stefan2 is a copyright specialist, so you'd be much better off with him. If he's not around, your best option would be to ask about it at COM:VP/C, which is dedicated to copyright-related questions. The people there are usually much better with intricate copyright questions than I would be. INeverCry 23:06, 18 August 2016 (UTC)

User:Jackguitarfan

I see that you extended your block on User:Jackguitarfan to prevent talk page access or email. The user has been trying to appeal his commons block through en:User talk:Jackguitarfan on enwiki, which of course he can't do. It isn't clear to me how he can appeal his block here. Of course I haven't seen the evidence which led you to tighten the restrictions on him here, but from his behaviour at enwiki he appears more confused than malicious. --David Biddulph (talk) 15:31, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

His contributions here were copyvio images from two different photographers, and a long (17kb) copyvio biography which has been revision deleted here and at en.wiki. An SPA that behaves like that isn't good for Commons. We get a number of people here who want to promote or write about their favorite musician, actor, etc, and they just snag images from Google and write glowing bios. They usually don't copy and paste whole web pages into our sandbox though. I'll open up talk access, but he's going to have to know that he can't upload copyvio images or post text here. INeverCry 17:47, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

this is a curious one

Please see File:Richard Carroll.jpg which appears to be a hoax image. I am unsure if the en:wiki article is as well, it's astonishingly light on references. Ellin Beltz (talk) 16:50, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) I've done a fair amount of work with images from 1900-1920 sourced to Google Books scans and this has fake written all over it. Ignoring the bad photoshopping (see where neck meets collar on the right side; the partially cropped off ear on the left, etc.), it is very uncommon to see a smile in photos from this (purported) era and the crosshatching from the scanner is a dead giveaway. The scanner artifacts are present on the lower portion/body, but not the face/hair. A legitimate image would have them consistently over the entire image; here's one of my images as an example of these artifacts: File:William Wyckoff.png. Эlcobbola talk 17:05, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
I do a fair amount of work with older images, this one appears to be a hoax image to me. Ellin Beltz (talk) 18:00, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
@Ellin Beltz: , @Elcobbola: I've tagged it for speedy deletion as a hoax on en.wiki. If/when they delete it, I'll get it deleted from ru.wiki and Wikidata. If/Once the articles are deleted I can delete the image here, and block the acct for cross-wiki vandalism. INeverCry 18:27, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
@Ellin Beltz: The speedy was declined at en.wiki, and they want me to jump through the usual hoops, which great pleasure I regretfully decline. I'm not comfortable editing there, and haven't been for a long time. I think I'll stay away from en.wiki from now on, not that I was doing a whole lot there as it was.

BTW. The mama cat brought 3 tiny orange kittens to the food and water yesterday evening. They're only a few weeks old. I tried for a pic yesterday, but my Coolpix wasn't up to the task and spat out its usual blurfest... INeverCry 22:45, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

Awww, so cute tiny kittens! I've asked Binksternet to have a look at the article. BTW, you have to leave me a few deletes, I used to be #3 admin and now dropping to #8 because you're eating *all* the low-hanging fruit! Ellin Beltz (talk) 23:08, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
Just imagine if Fastily was still an admin here! We used to do like 75% of all deletions between the two of us. Yesterday I did something only Fastily had done before, which was to close a whole day's DRs, every single one, on the 1st day they were eligible for closing. Remember, I'm Mr. OCD, and Fastily being in 1st place with 510,000 deletions doesn't sit right with me, especially when I have a measly 330,000. I'll do some nominating though, and you can pick off copyvios while I'm doing DRs or license reviews... Me and Didym used to run over each other too when we closed DRs...
@Ellin Beltz: Plenty left in Commons:Deletion requests/2016/08/13, including a bunch of mine. INeverCry 00:58, 20 August 2016 (UTC)

Hello. Was the image that you deleted about 15 minutes ago the exact same image as the one that was deleted less than 24 hours ago? Thomas.W talk 18:47, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

Two different shots, but still the two uploads from two different uploaders in such a short time gives me pause. Perhaps @Elcobbola: or @Magog the Ogre: can see if they're connected. They look like possible socks of each other to me. The two accts are Lekshman9693 and Dalek2point3. INeverCry 18:58, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
I would say Declined for this. These two accounts don't seem to have anything in common outside of this one image. Lekshman9693 is primarily (even solely) focused on Indian Athletics, both in image uploads on the Commons and the spam-y edits that got him blocked on en.wiki. Dalek2point3's edits cover a variety of topics, and are stylistically quite different. I suspect the relationship with this image is due to attention from the ongoing 2016 Olympics, not sockpuppetry. At a minimum, I would say wait until there is additional evidence of a connection; this is one very, very weak data point with no corroborating evidence or behaviour. Эlcobbola talk 19:12, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
There you have it. Thanks Elcobbola. INeverCry 19:22, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

"Plaket" in my language

Escuela Eugento de Hostos 101

Hi. Good to have you around. A question: How do we call these things? Is there a cat to bring together all these "plaket"s? (Name for the Dutch and us, the Turks, as I understand). Ihave seen Category:Plaquettes, which looked kind of different to me (all with faces etc, not only a "note"). Thanks. --E4024 (talk) 09:00, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

Category:Plaques? Or maybe Category:Historical markers and information signs. --GRuban (talk) 14:49, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
Perhaps a sub-category like Category:Historic plaques. INeverCry 17:35, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

Hello,

As this image was, in my opinion, considerably less offensive than a number of images that some might say are related (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Male_chastity_01.jpg), I would like to know the reason(s) it was deleted. If copyvio, I offered to provide a broader crop of the same photo that you won't find online. If that isn't enough to show that I own it, what could you possibly want? I have a release from the subject that I've decided must be honored, but I don't plan to publish that. If the image appears elsewhere on the web (because I have never cared if it was used), why does that disqualify? Honestly I'm not terribly concerned about it, but it does bother me when treatment isn't even-handed. Please advise, it's all I ask. Thank you.

user Gwxr6 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gwxr6 (talk • contribs) 14:49, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

I deleted this per your own statement in the deletion request: Commons:Deletion requests/File:TLEtDw.png. You say you can prove it's yours, but you don't want to. This doesn't match what you're now saying here. You didn't offer a broader crop. You clearly said you wouldn't provide it. Make up your mind. INeverCry 19:21, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

That's an easy one. I know of no way to provide it without publishing it. If I upload it would you have a look, then delete that one, and reconsider the deletion you have already carried out? Had you offered a way to provide it without publishing, you would have seen it. I didn't change my mind. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gwxr6 (talk • contribs) 23:19, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

We've already got 200 images in Category:Nude standing men. I'm not really sure your low quality image is in COM:SCOPE beyond any copyright concerns. I would suggest that you post an undeletion request instead. INeverCry 23:24, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

Question about no derivatives

Hi, I noticed that an image I recently uploaded was not approved. I did upload a second, cropped image of the original after I uploaded the original, which is the one that is not approved. Is that because there is a 'no derivatives" license on the image? I guess I'm not entirely clear on whether cropping an image disqualifies it under the' no derivatives' qualifier on a CC license. Here's the flickr image: https://www.flickr.com/photos/frankfarm/282595079/in/photolist-qYnEX-gcUVv1-6GX8dh-4RyEPm-4e45bJ-6GX82E-6DJSuU-4RuunR-6GX847-6GT3h8-4RyFiQ-4Ruugv-4RyECm-5RDup8-4RyF9U-6KwMNC-AiRee-pevyhs-iENeKy-dj2mF-b1FiK8-iEMBDz-3JyKQ2-e3CmYt-6uigJu-3JyNg4-b1FiKD-b1FiHR-3JyLK8-b1FiJ4-3JyMuX-iEMXmc-iEQAny-2km9eU-iVPSTw-gNC8At-74qbeg-2kkNFS-7rHEJb-6KqRpE-6ZZxoK-9tvwY2-8CqaVe-4GZRgS-5cnq3Z-9nrTmR-83bUFc-amdXfh-b1FiJB-6XuUTP. Yes. The Flickr image is under an unacceptable license for Commons. Even if derivatives were allowed, the non-commercial restriction is itself unacceptable. See Commons:Flickr files for a guideline on Flickr images. The chart at top right on Commons:Flickr files shows you what licenses to avoid and which licenses are OK when uploading from Flickr. You should add 2 or more images before you publish the page. Hi, I Never Cry, You removed File:DreamWeaver.jpg and File:SolarWind2000.jpg from the gallery on the robert Perless page which ay Moskowitz had put there when he created the site, He said at the time that he had taken them from the perless.com site, which is a gallery of Robert Perless' work. This is true., and Robert has submitted forms to the Commons 7/10 on Orion's Belt Perless.jpg. We received email back on Orion's Belt on 8/20.

New Aurora Logo .png and .jpg files uploaded.

Hi INeverCry, thank you so much for your response and your advice. I appreciate it. As you recommended I uploaded new logo file as .jpg and .png. I also realized that you declined our submission apparently because of following - no "clear evidence of why the subject is notable and worthy of inclusion in an encyclopedia." However a link provides absolutely clear evidence that Aurora is notable, at least in the eyes of American Chemical Society http://www.cas.org/news/media-releases/75-millionth-substance (please roll your mouse below a picture). Please reconsider your decision. Again, thank you. Best, Alex — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alex92126 (talk • contribs) 22:46, 23 August 2016 (UTC)

Jhony jhony ha ji sock unblock request

Hey INC, I've been clearing out Category:Requests for unblock but thought I might pass on this one as I'm technically the blocking admin. I bother you with this because I understand you're familair with Jhony jhony ha ji [4], so you'd be in a better situation than most to consider the merits/validity of their request without the hassle of rounding up the other CUs to chime in. Although that's certainly something I'd be happy to do; this is a trollish game of chicken like this was. Эlcobbola talk 18:03, 25 August 2016 (UTC)

I've declined the request and re-blocked him without talk access, which I recommend. He may also show up on your talk at another wiki at some point, as he did at mine on en.wiki [5]. INeverCry 18:28, 25 August 2016 (UTC)
Thanks! I'm already living the sister project dream. Maybe someday I'll learn to avoid the troublesome ones... Эlcobbola talk 18:51, 25 August 2016 (UTC)
@Elcobbola: LouisPhilippeCharles has trolled my pages at ru.wiki, uk.wiki, and es.wiki so far, demanding my email address over and over. I meant to ask you if you intended to extend the block of 78.149.128.0/20 here? 2 months in, and he's still active on that range - do you think 1 more month rangeblocked is enough? Here's the 3 ranges he's been active on recently, in case any other rangeblocks need to be extended: [6]. INeverCry 19:03, 25 August 2016 (UTC)
I was going to let it expire, as The /22 range is blocked until November and has less potential collateral. Эlcobbola talk 19:24, 25 August 2016 (UTC)

Hi, how are you? :)

Sorry I restored this file you deleted, I license reviewed this file a while ago as CC-BY, and the channel was an official one, so I think it's fine.

For a while, Japanese producers and agents have been harassing the community (Commons and jawiki) because they don't like the free-licensed photos of personalities we have, invoking bogus reasons like "personality rights", even though it breaches no law about this matter.

If you take a look at the IP contributions, you'll see they first talk about "personality rights" and being the personality rights holder (sic), and then some weeks later they say the image is from the coyprighted Bandai Visual image stock, which is weird because the YouTube channel is the Bandai Visual official channel (

バンダイ公式チャンネル

).

Anyway, I think they should contact Legal instead.

My deleted pictures

Dear friend, Some of my pictures were recently deleted. The matter is that I am the author of all these pictures. I agree that the term «My collection» is not clear but I just wasn’t too familiar with the proper terms. Sorry for that. I am the author and the owner of copyright

Could you please undelete all of them: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/Files_uploaded_by_Goldsgym Goldsgym (talk) 14:21, 24 August 2016 (UTC)

Why are these all very small with no COM:EXIF data? INeverCry 17:59, 24 August 2016 (UTC)
Because I was a beginner at the time I was uploading them (2010) and didn't pay much attention to that. Most of them were made at the 2010 European Aquatics Championships in Budapest which I attended as a journalist. Goldsgym (talk) 07:20, 25 August 2016 (UTC)
These give the author as Mikhail Makarov. If that's you, please send a permission email to OTRS. If everything checks out, an OTRS member can restore them or request restoration. I can't restore them myself, because Commons has to have evidence that Mikhail Makarov has released these under a free license. INeverCry 18:11, 25 August 2016 (UTC)

Category: Transport in Patna pics

Some pictures in the category 'Transport in Patna' were deleted recently on the grounds of copyright violation even though the users said they were their own work. Some of them include 'File:Patna Junction.JPG', 'File:Patna railway station.jpg', 'File:Patna jn..jpg'. May I know what was wrong with the pics, so that acceptable pictures can be uploaded in the future. Thanks

PratyushSinha101 (talk) 02:03, 25 August 2016 (UTC)

These were very small and appeared on the internet before being uploaded to Commons: File:Patna Junction.JPG taken from https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/trawelindia/9y1uQmKOKSU, File:Patna railway station.jpg taken from http://patnasahar.com/PatnaStation.aspx, and File:Patna jn..jpg taken from https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/trawelindia/9y1uQmKOKSU. They were deleted per COM:NETCOPYVIO. If the uploader/s were the author/s, uploading full-resolution originals would be the way to show these are their work. INeverCry 02:21, 25 August 2016 (UTC)

I've never really dealt with Russian documents or banknotes though, so perhaps there are other licenses that would cover them. Restoring Images/Waiting for Permission

Good day,

I noticed that you recently deleted some images that I uploaded because they were in the deletion requests. We are waiting for a volunteer to approve our permission notice in the OTRS and process the images.

I see that in such a case a special template should be used to indicate that these images are pending permission. However we did not use that template, so what should we do now?

Many thanks in advance. Swiftos (talk) 08:56, 23 August 2016 (UTC)

Why did you delete several photos from the Colegio Estilo page?

Hello, my name is Antonia and I created the page Colegio Estilo. I don't understand why did you delete several photos. All the photos you took out were taken by me and are now under Creative Commons. You can find some in Twitter and Facebook because I gave them to the school too. Colegio Estilo is a small & private school and does not harm anybody. When they're deleted, people can't use them to disrupt other projects and push POVs. In this case, this is a key concern. INeverCry 07:10, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
So if someone upload the same file, it should be deleted? I have a question why you deleted it. I want to know that for future.--g. balaxaZe 08:12, 29 August 2016 (UTC)

Wrong licensing

Most, if not all, of the files which you recently RDed are published under a wrong PD license. For example, File:Flag of Jabhat al-Nusra.jpg contains a complex element which should published only if it's in public domain in its country of origin. File:Flag of Jabhat Fatah al-Sham.png has the same problem. Moreover, some of them are attributed to rebel/terrorist groups (see this). --Mhhossein talk 14:17, 1 September 2016 (UTC)

Pictures

Greetings INC: I finally am getting around to uploading some new Pix... I'm half done uploading to Category:Fourth of July parades in Ferndale, California 2016 with minimal cross categorization. I have a list of Cats to add to them, mostly their car type and etc. I'll get to that after all of them are uploaded, the wizard makes me nervous for fear I will crash in the middle and have to redo 35 more image captions! bTW, I think I have a couple of images which might be able to be nominated for something, particularly see File:2016July4-Parade-19.jpg and etc. Ellin Beltz (talk) 20:42, 2 September 2016 (UTC)

Interesting photos, but with that strangely high ISO and fast shutter speed, noise and detail are an issue. I would've expected ISO 200/400 and 1/100 or 1/200 shutter speed, along with something like f/5.6 for an aperture setting. INeverCry 21:54, 2 September 2016 (UTC)

I guess I have to go back and reread the manual. I put it on auto and expected it to work. I personally think I did better in the old days with film. Ellin Beltz (talk) 22:33, 2 September 2016 (UTC)

@Ellin Beltz: Ah, the good ol' days of film. I certainly loved my XE7, SRTs, and RB67. My Coolpix is horrendous on anything but the ISO 80 it came set on. Anything else gets me blur, noise, and over/under exposure (even in broad daylight). But if you look at FPC, you'll notice a lot of post-processing with Photoshop and other programs, image stacking, etc. Not that the old darkroom people didn't spend hours trying some of this and some of that... The world is getting more complex by the day. Even Facebook is too much for me... INeverCry 22:45, 2 September 2016 (UTC)

I've found some of these image spammers by looking through uncategorized images. I've also found a few through the old-fashioned MER-C method of searching spam terms like "our service", "our company", "great deal", etc. I always wondered if maybe filters have trouble finding these spam links on images here at Commons because of all the source and author links used on images. I do not see that you are giving due diligence to deletions. Files should be assessed individually, and when you are doing 20 in a minute, that means that you are going to give 3 seconds to am image to review its upload history, the information template, and all the factors that should be given. This will lead to clear errors, and I believe that this approach is simply wrong and somewhere on the spectrum between cavalier and disrespectful to uploaders and the broader community. How are you able to identify files that have the information though not in the right spot? How are you able to identify if a work is used at another wiki and should be transferred to that wiki? To plead that you make mistakes is okay, and to ask for respectfulness here in bringing an issue to you is okay, that said, you need to display the required respectfulness and judgment that an administrator should give, and I think some of that is missing in our approach to deletions.  — billinghurst sDrewth 03:40, 5 September 2016 (UTC)

I certainly don't mean to be cavalier and disrespectful to uploaders and the community. I just do my best to help out. We've been doing it this way for years now. First Fastily took care of them in the same way, then me and Fastily, and now me and @Jcb: . If I'm causing a problem, I'm open to changing my approach. Here's the log a little further back btw:

I can't speak for Jcb, but if I don't do these deletions, he will, so I've pinged him here to let him know that you object to fast deleting. Perhaps there are better ways of handling these deletions that we could try out? I'm open to suggestions. Maybe other active admins have some ideas on how we can address your concerns above. @JuTa: , @Taivo: , @Krd: , @Christian Ferrer: , @Jianhui67: , @Didym: , @Ellin Beltz: , @Magog the Ogre: , @Elcobbola: , @Hedwig in Washington: , @EugeneZelenko: , @Revent: , @Josve05a: , @Thibaut120094: , @Jameslwoodward: . I dedicate hours each day to deletions, but I can certainly cut back on that if I'm causing trouble with my work. We have a bit of a shortage of admins who deal with deletions, but if others are OK with longer backlogs or want to do more deletion work, I'm open to whatever solution is found to be the best for Commons. Bed time for me though, since it's past 12:30 AM here. INeverCry 07:43, 5 September 2016 (UTC)
@INeverCry, Jcb :
Do you guys check the history before deleting a file? Especially when one of you clear the entire category with VFC? Regards. --Thibaut120094 (talk) 08:04, 5 September 2016 (UTC)
While I have to admit that I have been occasionally displeased with particular deletions, and wondered about the diligence applied, I also realize the something else matters. It's incredibly likely that the vast majority of these deletions would have been appropriate no matter how much diligence was applied, and between INC and Jcb, if you do the math, at just one minute per file we are looking at 17 man hours, every day, of deleted files. I have not seen either one of them arbitrarily deleting files... these are ones marked for deletion, one way or another, by some other editor, and in the vast majority of cases, the expired 7 days translates to 'nobody actually gives a shit'. Regardless, if we are going to ask them to stop processing such files rapidly, and instead spend more time (as a community of admins) investigating each deletion, then we are going to have to come up, in a sustainable manner, with the amount of hours needed to keep up with this... and it's not insignificant. If INC and Jcb were not deleting these files in a daily manner, if they were allowed to pile up they would eventually end up deleted 'en masse' by someone else as a matter of clearing the backlog. •  Comment Before all, thanks to INeverCry and Jcb for the hard job, since a few weeks all the DRs are closed, and the DRs backlogs cleaned, before I have the possibility to take a look.... Really... big thanks for your time, colleagues!
I never looked at categories such as "Missing permission as of 27 August 2016", if I had to do it I think I will open at least the files. I sometimes use visual change to delete files, but almost for to delete the specific uploads of one user, and each files is opened in a separate tab of my browser before I delete. Though It's true I rarely think to check the history, not a big fault as more of the half of the files I delete comes from the recent uploads and have never been edited. Almost are images that I find previously published on the web with the help of google search image, and obvious copyvios. The rest of the file I delete comes from "media needing categories", and once again it's true that I rarely check the file history when I find an image that have been previously published on the web with no free license. Regards, Christian Ferrer (talk) 11:49, 5 September 2016 (UTC)
    • If I process the no license/source/permission categories (only possible in the weekend, 00:00 = 02:00 for me, on working days I have to get up at 05:30), I open all the files in a separate tab about an hour before and have a brief look at all of them. Sometimes I keep a file, e.g. when it's PD-textlogo (and within scope), but about 99,8% of the files in those cats have a valid reason for deletion. At 00:00 I use the batch task handler to delete the files. If people feel I made a mistake, they are welcome to leave a message at my talk page. I will always have a second look. Sometimes I undelete a file, but most of the time the complainer is mistaken (including two poor interventions by topic starter today) - Jcb (talk) 15:45, 5 September 2016 (UTC)
(Edit conflict)It is possible to check the images first, and then delete them en masse. I do this for NowCommons files on English Wikipedia. Not sure if this is what the admins are doing here; I would recommend this approach. Maybe skip a few if there is a pattern (e.g., 20 very similar maps by the same uploader with nld tags; check a few and move on). Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:49, 5 September 2016 (UTC)
  •  Comment First of all, I want to thank INeverCry and Jcb for their commitment and devotion towards deletion backlogs. I appreciate your hard work on deletion backlogs. But INC, please take care of your health while handling the backlogs as that is more important! There are times when I take a break from maintenance and deletion backlogs as they eat up a lot of your energy and mindpower. It is important to take short wikibreaks from time to time. For me, when I handle category backlogs like media missing permission and source, I usually check the images one by one and sort them out according to each user before deleting them in batches using VisualFileChange. In my opinion, if you simply delete all the files in a particular category using VisualFileChange without checking them well, mistakes would definitely be prevalent. I understand the struggles, stress and frustrations of dealing with deletion backlogs because they are massive, bulky and heavy. The key to dealing with these backlogs is patience. Perhaps, we can divide the backlog among active admins. One of us can do a bit at a time. Deletion backlogs are not one-man tasks. Teamwork is necessary imho. Jianhui67 talkcontribs 15:57, 5 September 2016 (UTC)
  •  Comment I do not see anything wrong with how INC and JCB are deleting files. We all have our own methods, I don't see any vast amounts of UNDELs for either admin, and since anything DEL can be UNDEL if there was an error made, I don't see any kind of problem here at all with how the deletions are being done. I do see a problem in the complaint in that it lacks COM:AGF to user:INeverCry. Cheers! Ellin Beltz (talk) 21:06, 5 September 2016 (UTC)

C'mon folks, this subject comes up every year or two and no one has a solution. We get 10,000 new images every day and around 1,700 of them need to be deleted. 25 Admins do 90% of that work. Historically around half the deletions have been done by ten people and around 25% by the top two or three. (Note that over time the groups of 25, 10, and 2 or 3 change gradually). This is reflected in the fact that Fastily, INC, and Turelio have done 23.8% of all the deletions done by all 631 Commons Admins that we have had since the beginning of Commons. While we've caught up recently, the backlog will certainly grow as summer ends and people spend more time on Commons.

No one has yet proven that rapid working is a problem. About 1% of deletions go to UnDR and about 10% of those are reversed. Half of the reversals are for new information added after the deletion. So, something like five in ten thousand deletions are reversed for reasons that the deleting Admin might have considered if he or she had spent more time. And, by the way, the record also shows that the most productive Admins have fewer than average reversals -- that is, they may or may not appear at UnDR more frequently, but if they do, it's because they are doing far more deletions, not because they make a larger percentage or errors.

Now, while it's certainly true that not all erroneous deletions make it to UnDR, so our record is not quite as good as the figures above, it's pretty close. Slowing the process dramatically might improve our record a bit, but at the cost of an ever increasing backlog and more copyvios on Commons. Unless and until we get many more people who are willing to work on deletions, we shouldn't complain about the speed at which our productive Admins work.

Full disclosure -- I work fast when I'm doing deletions, so to some extent all of my comments here are in defense of my own way of working. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 21:26, 5 September 2016 (UTC)

I won't do any more of these deletions. Period. Problem solved. INeverCry 21:24, 5 September 2016 (UTC)
That would be a real shame -- we drove Fastily away by complaining about his error rate, which was well less than average. I'd hate to see it happen again, with another colleague who is willing and able to do many deletions fast and accurately. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 21:28, 5 September 2016 (UTC)
I agree, that would be a shame, your work is appreciated here. --Thibaut120094 (talk) 21:37, 5 September 2016 (UTC)
@INC, feel free to take a break, but I also hope you continue the good work. Although we have several backlogs, none of them is related to admin buttons. We have no DR backlog at all at the moment. It would be a pity to see the backlogs coming back. At this moment I am doing a lot of maintenance for which no admin buttons are needed. I think it's ages ago that I found time for that. There was always that huge DR backlog. Jcb (talk) 21:45, 5 September 2016 (UTC)
