Happy New Year, Hedwig in Washington!

Another test

Test

Changed colors on Double six

Hedwig, re File:Double_six.svg and Commons:Help desk#New version of File:Double six.svg: what part of "should be uploaded as separate files, not as replacements for the existing files" do you not understand? It is pretty annoying to be asked my opinion, give that opinion, and then have the exact opposite of what I requested done with a comment that it was what I requested. Please put back the original colors. And if you think the new Christmas-tree version deserves to exist, make it a separate file like I asked you to. —David Eppstein (talk) 03:44, 3 January 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for the quick fix. —David Eppstein (talk) 04:01, 3 January 2017 (UTC)

RE:Signature

Hi, I did not realize this policy, although I would like to clarify that this image I use in my signature in most of the Wikimedia projects and I never questioned that aspect; In addition, it is not a GIF image, so you should not reload as many resources on the server or load issues. I would appreciate you clarifying this situation. Regards. Alvaro Molina (Let's Talk) 16:33, 29 December 2016 (UTC)

@Alvaro Molina: Aloha! Well, the rule is pretty clear. It's not to harass people, there are some real-life issues behind it. See Phabricator. Images in signatures are prohibited on all wikis, see Commons:Signatures and over 90 other projects I could dig up in a short search, inkl. es, de, pt, en wiki, meta. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 21:29, 29 December 2016 (UTC)

Aceh earthquake and Myanmar flood relief files

Hi Hedwig in Washington, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Please do not delete. These are my original works. Thanks, Mikebeep — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mikebeep (talk • contribs) 12:20, 27 December 2016 (UTC)

Same to you! Hope all is well. Your uploads: Doesn't really look like own work, more like grabbed from the web. You need to source every single picture used in a collage. Since it looks like a screenshot, you need to provide the url to website as well. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 01:49, 28 December 2016 (UTC)

Me *eventuell* ausgenommen) erhalten bleiben.

1. Was verlangen Sie von mir? 2.

File:Mychosm Spain.svg File:Mychosm Germany.svg File:Mychosm romania 20x20.svg File:BoostOSM within OpenStreetMap.pdf File:Serra do Morião.png File:Nittel L8.jpg File:Nittel L6.jpg File:Nittel L7.jpg File:Nittel L5.jpg File:OSM Nittel L1.jpg File:OSM Nittel L3.jpg File:OSM Nittel L4.jpg File:OSM Nittel L2.jpg

Hallo Segundonome.
Last but not least: Hedwig in Washington hat bisher nur die eine Datei File:Maps me traffic situation.png gelöscht.

als "This file is a derivative work incorporating another work or works." zu bezeichnen würde ich noch gerne verstehen.

This media file is missing essential source information. The author and source of the file must be given, so that others can verify the copyright status. Edit the file description page to add source information.

Wenn ich unten richtig lese steht dort: source: own work ... muss ich die Programme an geben, mit denen ich die PDF erstellt habe? Segundonome (talk) 14:00, 3 January 2017 (UTC)

Grüßen Sie Hedwing in Washington. Segundonome (talk) 16:56, 3 January 2017 (UTC)
In diesem Sinne Segundonome (talk) 17:08, 3 January 2017 (UTC)

  3. File:Mychosm Spain.svg Collage ohne Quellenangaben, Lizenz nicht prüfbar
  4. File:Mychosm UK.svg wie vor
  5. File:Mychosm turkey.svg wie vor
  6. File:Mychosm Germany.svg wie vor
  7. File:Mychosm romania 20x20.svg wie vor
  8. File:Serra do Morião.png wie vor

--Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 03:27, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

Hallo, frohes neues Jahr.

Tolle Sache. Glueck auf! --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 19:35, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

Frank E. Moore Kodachrome slides

Hello Hedwig, Situation with respect to photographs taken by Frank E. Moore

I, Roger D. Moore am the eldest son of the late Frank E. Moore. My brother Jeffrey sent me a pair of DVDs with 1200 scanned Kodachrome slides taken by my father. About ten of these slides should be of interest to Wikipedia etc.

My brother claims that he has residual rights to the estate derived from the will of Frank E Moore. On 30 Nov, he sent me an e-mail which authorized me to post the pictures as I see fit.

Should I get him to send a Wikipedia e-mail to you which authorizes me to upload to Wikimedia? Alternatively, he could upload the pictures. /Roger Moore

text of e-mail from Jeff Moore sent 30 November 2016: Hi Roger,.   You raise interesting points.   First, I just now went through Dad & Mom’s estate plan.  I’m pretty sure there is nothing addressing a literary executor or heir, nor any language dealing with rights or intangible assets.  For purposes of this discussion there are two main documents, the trust and a will.  The trust explicitly only deals with tangible assets – accounts, real estate, furniture, and such. The will, after insurance policies, gives the residual of the estate to the trustees of the trust. I assume copyright type rights fell under “residual of the estate” and so went to me.   Second, an aside.  If you would like a copy of our parent’s estate plan, I would be happy to copy it for you – I have a fairly fast scanner.  Though not right away.   Third, Looking in the cover of Dad’s books, I see they are copyrighted by him, not the publisher the Moore Historical Foundation.  So perhaps that mean I could give them to Internet Archive.  Just a thought.   Fourth, regarding the immediate problem.  I am personally willing to grant you the right to post Dad’s photos as you see fit.  Or if you want me to perform some Wikipedia posting, it can be figured out.  I went ahead and added myself as User:Jmoore1000   jeffRdmoore6 (talk) 13:33, 16 December 2016 (UTC)

Hello again, I have examined the mechanisms for granting licenses at both https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Email_templates and https://tools.wmflabs.org/relgen/ Both of these seem to provide for granting permission for a single work rather than a group of works. Ideally I would get a CC0 license for all photographs taken by Frank E. Moore. Is there anyway to specify permission for multiple photos?Rdmoore6 (talk) 20:39, 16 December 2016 (UTC)

@Rdmoore6: Hello back! This is a variation your brother can use. Feel free to expand the list or change the template as needed. For more uploads, please add this to below the file description or next to the license tag. {{subst:OP}} Doesn't much matter where, as long as it is there, it will prevent the file from being speedy deleted.

After the permission is send to OTRS, you'll get an automated response, incl. a ticket nr. Just post the ticket number here on my talk page and I'll have a peek asap. Hope it helps! --Hedwig in Washington (mail?)https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Configuration.pdf 02:05, 17 December 2016 (UTC)

Kiruna Wagon logotype

Hi Hedwig,

I received a message regarding a file that I have uploaded to Kiruna Wagon's page on Wikipedia (File:Kiruna wagon logo.png). You kindly made me aware that essential source information was missing so I have now added info about the file.

The file contains a logotype and I am employed by the company, HEEDMARK, which created the logotype for the owner of the trademark; Kiruna Wagon. I have Kiruna Wagon's permission to upload the file to Wikipedia. I have listed the date when the logo was originally created by HEEDMARK (2009) and a source where the logo can be found online, www.kirunawagon.com

I have also added the text "This work includes material that may be protected as a trademark in some jurisdictions. If you want to use it, you have to ensure that you have the legal right to do so and that you do not infringe any trademark rights."

Does this info suffice as source information? We don't want the file to be removed from Wikipedia.

Kind regards,

Marit Kangas HEEDMARK AB Sweden — Preceding unsigned comment added by MHKangas (talk • contribs) 10:54, 21 December 2016 (UTC)

@MHKangas: Sorry for my late reply, end of the year chaos. I wanted to write you in detail, I simply forgot. Mea culpa. I added the {{Trademark}} template and another category. What's not necessary is the upload of .png and jpg files. Simple logos should be in .png or .svg format. Also different sizes are created automatically by the software. That was pretty much it, I believe. Thanks for your contribution! Feel free to contact me if you have any question in the future. xmas --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 00:32, 24 December 2016 (UTC)

Flickr

I got your message. Hedwig. Thank you for the warning

The Image was in Flickr since Wikipedia accepts Flicker, but I was surprised that it wasnt accepted. Brief me on how to put a photo without a copyright issue. Wikinaija (talk) 14:29, 21 December 2016 (UTC)

@Wikinaija: The best way to avoid (c) issues with Flickr is the Commons:Flickr2Commons tool. This tool won't let you upload anything that doesn't have a compatible license on Flickr. That said, the license used on Flickr might be wrong as well, happens frequently. As a general rule, if a photograph isn't made by yourself, it probably isn't free. Most photos found on the web are not free. You might find this tutorial informative: Com:First steps. xmas --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 00:37, 24 December 2016 (UTC)

About File:Guseyin muhtarow.jpg

Dear sir.
The file you deleted File:Guseyin muhtarow.jpg is freely useable. I gave you some webpages where this file put without any permission from government organizations as long as this picture was printed on the literature textbooks of pupils: https://m.ertir.com/index.php?q=blog&view=111290 ; and I want to assure you that picture of Guseyin Muhtarov is our national property becouse of that person was one of the best playwright of central Asia and he is the symbol of dramaturgy in our country. Another reason of my belief that in my country intellectual property rights are new field of laws which aren't common among our people so I think picture of Gusein Muhtarow wasn't copyrighted. I hope you will take into consideration my comments and rebuild the picture. --NTirkeshov (talk) 14:18, 20 December 2016 (UTC)

@NTirkeshov: Hello! According to your upload the authors are: Jora Allakow, Tirkeş Sadykow, Romanguly Mustakow. This is probably not correct either. The original author of the photograph owns the intellectual property rights. Since Turkmenistan has been a part of the SSSR, Russian copyright law has to be applied. Commons:Copyright rules by territory#Russia and former Soviet Union. I understand the way you are thinking, but even a the photohrapher of a national hero owns the IP rights. There's no way around it. You need to bring more information. As far as I could find out in a quick search, Gusein Muhtarow died in 1980. Therefore the photographer could easily still be alive. Even if the photographer died in 1980 as well, the photograph would be protected for 70 years after death = until 01.01.2051. We can't the rights to his work away. You really need to bring more information. Who is the photographer? Where was it published first? Sorry, I don't have any good news to share regarding this image. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 00:16, 21 December 2016 (UTC)

  • Finaly, the domains are just alias that points to the same actual location. This can be confirmed by checking any imagte found in the website. For example, this and this URLs point to the same media file.

I expect this information is clear. The only relevant issue for copyright is the watermark, but, as the users mentioned somewhere (I don't remember if it was in the Jcb's Talk page), И. Руденко is a member of the Russian Military, and as the picture is found at mil.ru, it is properly licensed. --Amitie 10g (talk) 15:34, 31 December 2016 (UTC)

Ahh, and the Abuse filter should handle the three domains (mil.ru, минобороны.рф and its encoded counterpart xn--90anlfbebar6i.xn--p1ai) as alias for mil.ru, in order to be filtered properly. --Amitie 10g (talk) 15:43, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
No problem, happy to restore the files. What I meant to ask you is, are you aware of any changes to those ULRs in the past? If not, we can probably solve the problem permanently. I know that it's all the same.; the problem is that most admins on Commons don't read Cyrillic and punycode urls are an ever bigger pain in the butt to identify without clicking (or copy an d paste) them. Having mil.ru in the source-url would decrease the misinterpretation of the source to pretty much zero. Anyhow, @Steinsplitter: Can an abuse filter handle an automatic search and replace of the strange urls?? --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 17:38, 31 December 2016 (UTC)

Hallo Hedwig,

gutes Neues.

--Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 02:33, 1 January 2017 (UTC)
--Rosenzweig τ 15:39, 1 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi Hedwig in Washington. I think this file was one of the Gameguest38 files you deleted according to User talk:Gameguest38#Deleted content and it looks like it has been re-uploaded. Per my the concern I expressed at the Village Pump I started about this editor's uploads, Gameguest38 seems to have gone on another uploading spree, though not as many files as before. Anyway, some of the files have already been tagged or taken to DR, but it really doesn't seem as if the editor has any idea about Commons' licensing policy. I noticed that Magog the Ogre has already given them a final warning, but that hasn't slowed them down. Any suggestion on what to do here? -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:55, 1 January 2017 (UTC)

Seems like he already got blocked. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 02:40, 2 January 2017 (UTC)
Thank you for taking a look at this. Gameguest38 has requested an unblock, but they also seem to have tried to unblock themselves at the same time. The editor probably just miscopied a template onto their talk page, but they still have not directly responded to any posts left on their user talk. Is there anything on Commons which is similar to en:WP:CIR? You will occassionally see a Wikipedia admin block an editor for CIR to prevent further disuption when the editor seems to mean well, but simply is unable to contribute productively no matter how hard they try. From the editor's Wikipedia contributions, it does not appear that they are a vandal; they have been a warned a few times, but nothing too severe and nothing really related to behavior. When it comes to Commons, however, it's not clear whether they just don't know about COM:L or have read it and just don't understand it. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:12, 2 January 2017 (UTC)
I haven't seen anything like CIR on Commons. But there are a lot of dark spots here, nobody visited for +10 years. ;-) I have to find the website where a user with a similar name edited. I think it was some kind of Nascar blog or forum. I scoured my browser history, but came up empty. Not sure what's going on with this guy, I don't think CIR would apply, seems to be an underage newbie ignoring the rules just because he can. Or thought so. Again, not sure. The self-approved unblock certainly is a highlight to begin 2017 with! *<:o)wine --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 02:17, 3 January 2017 (UTC)
Ignoring the rules just because you can will only get you so far regardless of your age if you're going to eventually end up doing this. They've already used one of the socks on Wikipedia, so they'll end up being blocked there as well. Somebody should write a book called Wikimedia Sockpuppetry for Dummies; they'd probably make a lot of money because I bet there are lots of Gameguest38 types out there who would eat that kind of thing up. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:27, 4 January 2017 (UTC)

File:Jonathan Cohler.jpg

Just wanted to thank you again, and let you know that I slightly updated the information on File:Jonathan Cohler.jpg to be complete and accurate. You had listed Jon Chomitz as the "Source" but according to Template:Information, the source should be me in this case, because I am the legal "author" and copyright holder of the image, which was created as work for hire (see OTRS ticket {{2017010410014391}}). The copyright law specifically states in 17 USC 201(a) and (b), "Copyright in a work protected under this title vests initially in the author..." AND "In the case of a work made for hire, the employer or other person for whom the work was prepared is considered the author for purposes of this title...". So I am both the author and copyright holder. Since there didn't seem to be another good place to list the photographer, however, I listed him in the description field of Template:Information using the comment field of Template:Depicted person. I also added the appropriate attribution line. I hope you agree with these changes. Best regards --Cohler (talk) 18:34, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

It's not exactly as I would handle my work for hire, but I think all the information needed is there. So yes, I think it's ok now. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 18:59, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

Your DR closings

Hello Hedwig in Washington,

I noticed that you chose the kept option on 3 DRs of mine with the reason, "no valid reason for deletion". Did you mean that you disagree that the logos are above TOO, or it's something completely different? -- MCMLXXXIX 22:01, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

I meant I think they are below TOO. I am just too lazy to write a new note every time, so I go with the default given by the script. Sorry for confusion. C(_) --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 22:03, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files with a realistic educational purpose and that can be used for any purpose, including:
  • use in any work, regardless of content
  • creation of derivative works
  • commercial use
  • free distribution

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.

Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Hallo Hedwig,

Vielleicht schaust Du mal die anderen Uploads an before du mir Muellhochladen vorwirfst. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 19:20, 9 January 2017 (UTC)

AW

@Reneman: Danke fuer Deine Email.

Das erfolgt i.d.R. sofort.

--Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 20:27, 9 January 2017 (UTC)

File:Stefano Palatchi©ToniRiera.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation./ File:Con los brazos cruzados sonriendo.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation.

Please Mr Hedwig,

Relating your answer:

@DrMagnesio: Your statement that S. Palatchi owns the intellectual property rights directly shows that you are not the owner of the IP rights. Therefore you can't freely license HIS work. That's a clear copyright violation. If you are authorized as you say, please have the owner of the intellectual property rights send permission. For the how-to please see: Com:OTRS. I have read Com: OTRS, but I don't understand very well what do I have to do, sorry! Thank you very much — Preceding unsigned comment added by DrMagnesio (talk • contribs) 17:59, 10 January 2017 (UTC)

Nothing to be sorry for, no worries. The point is, the file you uploaded is not yours. The owner of the copyright has to send us his permission using the OTRS system. You need to contact the owner of the file, S. Palatchi, and ask him (her?) to send us permission using our OTRS system. If I would explain that in Spanish you probably would be very mad, my Spanish is that bad! :-D I'll ask one of our Spanish speaking admins to give you a hand. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 18:08, 10 January 2017 (UTC)

Yeah, makes probably more sense. Doubtful anyone outside wiki/commons is using this category. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 17:52, 12 January 2017 (UTC)

Why doesn't it qualify for speedy deletion? El País is one of the major Spanish newspapers, it would be quite strange if the uploader, who has also uploaded a file with a false own-work claim, has received permission from them to upload. Savhñ 23:39, 12 January 2017 (UTC)

Because it is only a map. The false claims may be fixable. Maps by themself are not easily protected. The markers added my change that, not sure. That's why I converted your speedy to a regular DR. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 23:55, 12 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi Hedwig,

I noticed that you deleted this file because it is a self portrait and the uploader isn't Breivik. However, the file discription states: "Self-made portrait of Anders Breivik, the perpetrator of 2011 Norway attacks". I read this as Solarislv made a drawing off Breivik. As you can see here I'm not the only one who believes that this interpertation is correct.

Could you please undelete the file? Thanks in advance. Natuur12 (talk) 15:43, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi Hedwig. I hope you can help me out with a little issue. I noticed that you're an admin who works at WTRS, so maybe you can advise?

I put a speedy delete template at File:Donald Trump President-elect portrait.jpg and notified the uploader who promptly deleted the template. I restored the template and asked for him to explain at talk page. His explanation is that he somehow got the image from the copyright holder, without saying how, and without using OTRS. I don't understand. I submitted the original photograph as my own and therefor I'm the copyright holder and gave consent for use In fact I still have the original slide from the occasion. From whom must I obtain this consent you need? Aldercraft (talk) 22:24, 9 January 2017 (UTC)

Let's see if I understand you correctly. You own a physical photograph and want to upload a scan on Commons. Owning a physical copy of a photograph doesn't give you the copyright. Otherwise you would be the copyright holder of a book or a cd you buy. The original photographer needs to give permission. That's what OTRS is for. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 22:32, 9 January 2017 (UTC)

I personally took this photograph and that is why I have considered myself copyright holder all along. I belong to the performer's family. Aldercraft (talk) 22:33, 10 January 2017 (UTC)

I'm sorry, that didn't came out clear enough for several people. Here's how we should do it: I restored the file, and you go to the automatic release generator -> https://tools.wmflabs.org/relgen/ There you type in the necessary information. You don't have to do it this way, but I strongly advise you to go this route. With an OTRS ticket number there shouldn't be anymore trouble with this photograph in the future. I added a few categories as well. Have a peek, you can change the author in the self|gfdl.... template to your real name if you like or leave it as is. If you find something that's not to your liking, change it. Afterall, Commons is a Wiki, too. Cheers! C(_) --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 02:47, 11 January 2017 (UTC)
@Aldercraft: Forgot to ping you. I added the photograph into the article on enwiki. I noticed the birth- and death places, as well as the exact birth- and death dates are missing. Maybe you could add those if you find the time. There are several sub-categories for Harpsichords, can you clarify if this is? Flemish, German, oder whatever-style Harpsichord? I don't know nothing about Harpsichords, besides that Lurch is playing one. ;-) --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 02:54, 11 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi Hedwig, hope you're having a good day. You mentioned my account has had several copyright notices and is at risk of being blocked. This is worrying to read, as so far I've only had two blocked images. I want to upload a third which I took that definitely doesn't already exist anywhere on the internet - I'm just worried now it'll get blocked as it keeps happening. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jerry springs (talk • contribs) 03:27, 14 January 2017 (UTC)

So the claim that you took the photograph and own the copyright is false? Lying about copyright here is pretty stupid, usually we catch that. Simple solution: Don't tell us fairy tales and don't upload material you didn't create yourself. If you don't want to shot photos yourself, find FREE material on web. See Com:L for more info. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 03:31, 14 January 2017 (UTC)

Sorry Hedwig, there seems to be some confusion and crossed wires here... No false statements have been made. Anyway, I've just uploaded a new photo which I took and which I haven't already uploaded to the web - so now we should avoid any possible copyright issues. First time to Wiki Commons but I'm finally getting there, just gotta bear with me as a newbie :) Thanks, enjoy your day. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jerry springs (talk • contribs) 03:44, 14 January 2017 (UTC)

Gotcha. No offence intendent. There are two ways. One and a half actually. Goto OTRS and have a peek. You can either go the email way or use the release generator. That would/should take care of the copyright issues. Another problem I see is the notability of the person. We usually don't keep photographs of persons that are not notable. Notability is a shaky subject, you need to use your best judgement if there is a possibility of any educational use of a photograph. Please note that OTRS is volunteer run as well, we currently have a backlog of ~40/50 days. C(_) --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 04:03, 14 January 2017 (UTC)

New theatre article

Hi Hedwig,

I have been drafting this article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Out_of_the_Ordinary

Can you please provide suggestions/editorial feedback and help me to make sure it isn't deleted? All are free images, but the cover of the play (widely available online) has been removed by another user. Other plays by the same publisher have their covers included, so I'm not sure what the rule is there. This is the last of these I will do. It looks like the Annie Maynard article will be deleted, which is a shame, but thank you for helping (StephenFBanham (talk) 05:56, 17 January 2017 (UTC))

Yeah, seems only potty mouth jackasses are worthy of Wikipedia. A shame it is. I think the draft needs more info about the play itself. The reader has no clue what the play is all about. As for uploads: The rule is copyright. If it is not freely licensed, we can't keep it. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 23:51, 18 January 2017 (UTC)

email

My email is back up. I've stemmed the tide of donation requests. I email and call my senators and reps and I sign some petitions regarding Medicaid, disability, Social Security, etc, and I got an absolute barrage of "we'll double your donation to this and that group" emails. I was thinking of changing emails, but I use this one in enough places to make that more of a pain in the ass then unsubscribing (I never subscribed!) from these people who want money. I just wonder how much of the money goes to their pockets... As regards success, we'll see if I have any of that in getting my sysop bit back... Being a regular editor for me is like being Clark Kent with no Superman suit under his reporter clothes. lNeverCry 04:23, 19 January 2017 (UTC)

I get those stupid emails as well. I filter the heck out of them, as good as it gets. I read what I want to read, keepers I move into separate folders, and then CRTL-A -> delete. I take no prisoners in the spam war.

Dear Hedwig,

You sent a message to the uploader of this image not to upload copyvios but the uploader uploaded this image after your warning. However, the flickr account owner claims that this is his flickr account. My question is whether you know if this is the flickr account owner's own work or is it a flickrwash. This is what I though in this DR since the image resolution is poor and there is no metadata but I am not 100% certain now. The only thing I am certain is that the flickr account owner and uploader is the same person.

Its hard to know who to trust sometimes. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 06:03, 20 January 2017 (UTC)

File:Estudio Lamela SantiagoBernabeu.jpg

I am processing OTRS ticket:2017010510008351 for File:Estudio Lamela SantiagoBernabeu.jpg, but I am not sure how to proceed since I can not figure out why the image was deleted. Can you elaborate? --Jarekt (talk) 20:59, 28 February 2017 (UTC)

@Jarekt: I believe the file showed up as either OTRS expired (after 7 days) or no source. Tagged as no source by Dicasto and then OTRS pending by the uploader. Sorry, I can't be more specific. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 02:28, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
I undeleted it, although I still have no idea why User:Discasto tagged it as no permission and why was it deleted. The OTRS email was added after no permission tag that asks for it, so the guy sends a proper permission to OTRS, but I do not see why does he need it since it is an upload by the photographer. So I thought that maybe I am missing something. Thanks --Jarekt (talk) 13:00, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
Well, I tagged the figure as "No permission" as the the pictures from this uploader seemed to come from an Architecture Studio (Lamela) and therefore proper permission would be required. As far as I understood, it was not a random photographer taking pictures of anywhere, but a person belonging to Lamela's payroll. Therefore, I assessed (maybe in a wrong way) that studio permission was needed. Hope it clarifies the issue. Best regards and sorry for any inconvenience --Discasto talk 13:23, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
@Jarekt: Right, there was something about the studio. Probably a mistake while doing a copoyvio-lot. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 00:44, 2 March 2017 (UTC)
That is a good point. However just tagging and deleting the image and not explaining the reasoning behind it, is really confusing to new users eager to contribute. Perhaps DR would have been a better choice, because it is more clear what and why is it happening. --Jarekt (talk) 03:39, 2 March 2017 (UTC)
Yes, would have been better. In the end my mistake, no matter what the reasoning for the tag was. --03:42, 2 March 2017 (UTC)

Flickr copyright

Can you help me with File:Grand Hall, Iolani Palace (8258329057).jpg? What tag is appropriate here. This Flickr Uploader has released his image copyright to this after I asked him to but without responding to me he just changed the tags to PD on the Flickr image. I used the Flickr upload bot to transfer the file but commons is questioning the validity of PD claim. I emailed him to change it to the share attributition tags but he hasn't responded at all. What do I do? I'm not the uploader so I can tag it saying I released the copyright.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 08:16, 19 March 2017 (UTC)

@KAVEBEAR: The PD mark is a license we can't accept. Without the uploader we are stuck with a deletion, as far as I can tell. :-( If the Flickr user changes the license, we can re-upload or just restore the file. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 01:16, 21 March 2017 (UTC)

Wrong renaming of category

Hi, Hedwig.

You have recently renamed category Ivan Piddubny to Ivan Poddubny commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Ivan_Poddubny

It was not a mistake, you shouldn`t do this. If he was russian, that will be correct, but he is Ukrainian, and right spelling is Piddubnyy. Please, rename it to the previous version.--Viiictorrr (talk) 17:10, 9 March 2017 (UTC)

Einbinden von Wikidate auf Wikimedia

Hallo Hedwig, Du hast Diskussion beendet.

--Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 01:12, 21 March 2017 (UTC)
Reminder: Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2016 is open!

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2016 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear Hedwig in Washington,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2016 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eleventh edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2016) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category.

In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 20 April 2017, 23:59:59 UTC.

Bulk uploads

Dear Hedwig. I am having a very bad day. Someone is doing bulk uploads of (very often) junk images and not classifying them, though they do make some effort, often. It is extraordinarily maddening behaviour for those of us who take this collection of images seriously. I do know you are an administrator. Please would you think long and hard before repeating this. Sincerely, Eddaido (talk) 05:05, 21 April 2017 (UTC)

I am so angry about this. Please consider the mess you have been making and which you apparently consider others should clean up after you. A Very angry Eddaido (talk) 05:11, 21 April 2017 (UTC)

@Eddaido: What are you talking about? You changed the categories of three of my files. That's a mess? What did go wrong? Let me know! --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 22:36, 21 April 2017 (UTC)
After three fixes I went on strike!
First let me confirm that I do know anyone at all may upload any images that comply with Wikimedia’s copyright requirements. But bulk uploads will always pick up the dross left after the gold has been removed. Yes they pick up good stuff too but faced with so many the uploader usually admits defeat when they come to categorising.
I complain: first because the dross is not wanted because it is dross; second when I go hunt for a suitable image (which may take some hours) and find it and go to upload it I can find it is already in Wikimedia (because my upload is not accepted).
Had the bulk uploader categorised the image correctly I would have found it and not wasted an hour or two hunting elsewhere. This is how the frustration and anger arises and rises.
It is nice when a contributor gives us an image. It is nicer still if they have a try at categorising it. But with bulk uploads the uploader of the randomly selected images sets themselves real problems principally of volume / quantity.
I resent having these high volume problems dumped on me (sure, other people fix these things too) and that is why I write to you.
Should I provide examples?
I do have a possible solution for the cataloguing troubles but the local “powers that be” prefer their own concepts. Invite me to tell you here and I will explain how I think it might be done better by amending those concepts.
(beginning to feel better) regards, Eddaido (talk) 03:23, 22 April 2017 (UTC)
Frankly, I am not interested in any dispute with so called local powers. If you have good ideas, post them @ the village pump for discussion and don't make a spy game out of them. Nobody will rip you to pieces for posting an idea. Concerning the uploads: I have the same problem as well, particularly with your uploads. You only add one single category, the car make and type. No location, color, anything else. So please don't tell my uploads are disruptive are even shit. If you think you are the only one who is able to find suitable images, you need to create your own project with yourself as king, judge, and executioner. We all make mistakes and when I don't deep deep categorize an image that means the following:
  • a) I don't know this vehicle in detail
  • b) The uploader (i.e. on Flickr) didn't give much or conflicting info
  • c) I made a mistake
That's all there's to it. Don't even think for a second that anybody is trying to make you mad. Shit happens when many 1000s of people do stuff. I do appreciate your work of recategorizing uploads where appropriate, don't think I don't. I am a big fan of our category system, even with its limitations.
What you could do is try to work out how we could integrate VIN numbers or license plates into the system. I started to think about those ~ 10 years ago but got nowhere fast. All will be good, have a tea C(_) and relax. Best, --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 20:50, 22 April 2017 (UTC)
Didn't know you had responded. Spy game? I've no wish to exacerbate this but who cares about location and colour? Your occasional uploads are not disruptive. Bulk uploads are. The category system in Wikimedia is constructed on the basis of archivists putting things away where they alone can find them. (i.e. if you know all about the subject you'll find the image otherwise you're stuffed). It keeps things safe from organisations like ISIS?
My suggestions for making the categorising process easier for people like yourself are always firmly sat on. Best, Eddaido (talk) 09:12, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
How dare you?! Who are you to decide that location and color are not important? YOU are missing the project scope of commons. People like you make Commons irritating by suggesting that you have superior knowledge. Please, if you have really good ideas, post them @ the village pump already and don't fill my talk page with your illogical rants. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 19:30, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

Question about protecting an image

Hello, Thanks for deleting Rick Perry's image. Is there a way we can protect that specific image from being uploaded? This is going to be a problem until an official secretary image is released, and it's already been deleted several times. Thanks, Corkythehornetfan (ping me) 00:34, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

Deleted file?

You deleted this file without notice, File:Lockheed F-104 Starfighter zero-length launch.png

-- which was marked (and is) PD as USAF source, Had you given me a chance to research the original source, I expect I'd have found it. The intermediate source is an aviation expert, with many previous contribs. Apparently you would rather be arbitrary. So, hell with you. --Pete Tillman (talk) 18:19, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

@Tillman: The user who tagged the file no source since failed to inform you. Anyway, the files was tagged as PD/USAF but no real source was given. You are not a newbie. You should know that all files need a proper source, no matter who added them to their private Flickr collection. No need for insults. I'd restore the image if you want to do some research. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 19:41, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi. Can you please consider following the regex in my example? Category contains files uploaded by two users using case-sensitive file names there, one used 'Zoo XXX', the second 'ZOO XXX'. In order to somewhat avoid confusion, I suggested adding 'C' and 'M' in the filename (username initials). Thank you. //  Gikü  said  done  Friday, 5 May 2017 14:23 (UTC)

@Gikü: That doesn't make much sense. Usually we don't have usernames in filename. I suggest Chișinău Zoo June 2016 XXX as a template. BTW: Your RegEx doesn't work -> invalid filename. What do you think? --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 14:32, 5 May 2017 (UTC)
You will have 'Chișinău Zoo June 2016 02' twice if you don't add anything, because there is File:Zoo 02.jpg and there is File:ZOO 02.jpg. About the invalid filename, you are right; I have corrected my regex-es. //  Gikü  said  done  Friday, 5 May 2017 14:52 (UTC)
@Gikü: Now the tool doesn't find a match. :-) How about Chișinău Zoo June 2016 XXX? --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 14:48, 5 May 2017 (UTC)
What tool are you using? //  Gikü  said  done  Friday, 5 May 2017 14:52 (UTC)
Massrename tool -> User:Perhelion/massrename.js Still no match. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 14:55, 5 May 2017 (UTC)

Imagenes borradas

You uploaded a whole barrage of files that you are not allowed to upload here. It is not MY job to filter out if there are two photos that may have been taken by you. That is YOUR job. Follow the easy to understand rules and no problem will ever ensue. Let me know exactly for which file you hold the copyright and I will restore the file. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 00:56, 12 May 2017 (UTC)

File:Nail & Gear.jpg

Hi Hedwig in Washington. You deleted File:Nail & Gear.svg for lacking proper permission. Would you mind taking a look at File:Nail & Gear.jpg as well? It's the same logo, just in a different format. There is a link to a YouTube page which says the file has been released into the public domain, but I can't find that particular logo anywhere on the page and I'm not sure if the standard YouTube license can be used to cover it. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:30, 19 May 2017 (UTC)

@Marchjuly: I usually go through the list before I start the deletion process with VFC. I didn't notice this one for whatever reason or I forgot to tag it for fixing. It should be PD-Ineligible IMHO. Your VFC installation method is deprecated

Hello Hedwig in Washington, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. A detailed explanation can be found here. Important: To prevent problems please remove the old VFC installation code from your common.js and instead enable the VFC gadget in your preferences. Thanks! --VFC devs (q) 16:23, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

Email

Majkl Pris

Why was this image deleted? This was an image I created and have licensed for use on Wikimedia.

Jeff Vorzimmer — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jvorzimmer (talk • contribs) 20:16, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

Easily explained: Your description: Cover of the paperback original, Sin Pit by Paul S. Meskil, but then you claim that you are the author. Are YOU Paul S. Meskil? OR the creator of the cover? Further, you got TWO warnings on your talk page you ignored. You didn't state that you actually have the rights to (re)license the image and why you have the right. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 22:33, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

Hasty delations again

Dear Hedwig in Washington,

I do not understand why you have deleted the files as follows

and I do not understand the motivation "Missing essential information such as license, permission or source". An e-mail has been being processed in progress which has been sent by the copyright holder, Prof. Dr. Judit Vihar who has sent the permission in time, and the permission e-mail has already had to arrive at administrators it may concern. So the processing must still be in progress, so I think your decision was a little bit hasty and ain't prudent and it can be a little bit rude. I know the files can be restored easily, so I would like to ask you for restoring these files without delay. I know and you also know that the OTRS procedures are little bit slow because volunteers do the tasks but if you are aware of that fact why you do delate so fast and hastily. Be attentive and polite. Earlier Prof. Dr. Judit Vihar's photos also have been delated hastily in December but fortunately the files got be restored so I was right and the photos can have used legally by Wikipedia. Thank you for your kind attention. Best regards.Borgatya (talk) 03:32, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

@Borgatya: There was no hasty deletion. Per Commons rules files that are missing essential information will be deleted after seven days. I don't know if there is a permission pending, and if, if the permission will be approved or not. As per now, your uploads don't have a valid permission by the copyright holder. Let me know the OTRS-ticket number and I will take a peek. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 13:10, 23 May 2017 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply. The OTRS-ticket number is [Ticket#2017033110012329] on 31 March 2017 when the permission was sent for the administrators it may concern. So I think it was an unnecessary and early delation still before the decision and supervision.Borgatya (talk) 20:54, 23 May 2017 (UTC)
