No enough time!

You have deleted two files File:Ghom photo 01.jpeg, and File:YONOS.jpg, without giving me enough time (at least a week) to be assured for copyright violation, especially for yonos.jpg, which I can't recall.--Omar35880 (talk) 12:08, 19 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Omar35880: File:Ghom photo 01.jpeg was (as indicated be my at you user talk) a Panoramio grab and File:YONOS.jpg was a similar case. I recommend to check local arwiki uploads for copyright violation before making a file transfer to Commons. Thx. Gunnex (talk) 18:00, 19 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Billetes bcu

Please give me some help, those images certainly are property of the Central Bank of Uruguay and hence a guvernamental agerncy its use rights may be found on its page http://bcu.gub.uy , ¿do I really cant use them? they are too good for my articles. lets work it out, --167.57.35.88 19:20, 21 July 2016 (UTC)--Neurorebel (talk) 19:27, 21 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Neurorebel: the photo was taken from (as indicated) https://www.facebook.com/MatesEnLaRambla/photos/a.502631556466109.122056.502549716474293/1117308928331699/?type=3&theater (10.03.2016) but is circulating in the Internet since 2014/2015 via (example) http://lasmejoresrecetas.net/como-hacer-tortas-fritas/ (2015, Copyright © 2016 Las Mejores Recetas. Todos los derechos reservados) = http://lasmejoresrecetas.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/tortas-fritas.jpg, so the Facebook account "Mates en la Rambla" is most likely NOT the copyright owner and NOT able to authorize the free use of the photo.Gunnex (talk) 21:43, 21 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ok then the author was unauthorizad to lead any permit as he presuntly did, sorry for that but i didnt knew. (The owner of "mates en la rambla" presumed himself to be the author of that image and granted to me a permit such he dont own)

¿How do know what you know? ¿HOw can I check for copyrights?

¿What about the billetes*-*bcu*jpg.jpg files? I really need those images. They obviously are gubernamental property, so... ¿wich law applies and who really is the owner?

Delete reconsider please

Hi, please reconsider delete of the following file. In your delete request, you indicated that "Unlikely to be own work: small/inconsistent resolutions, missing EXIF" but you are wrong; it is own work and the image was cropped, exif data was deleted, as I often do when sharing my images in a public setting: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kosher_switch_installed_with_timer.jpg

The other file you nominated is a screenshot, and I understand that this usually not be allowed. However, since I did not find any photo of the inventor of this device, I thought it's better to have it rather than not. The screenshot is from their video on youtube and in the public domain. Perhaps an exception can be made: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kosher_switch_founder_Andy_Menashe_Kalati.jpg

Thank you. Hash613 (talk) 15:59, 25 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Hash613: COM:PRP applies here, considering Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Hash613. The Youtube screenshot which (btw) appears to be a reupload by you already deleted via Commons:Deletion requests/File:KosherSwitch founder Andy Menashe Kalati in Indiegogo campaign video.png is "© All rights reserved" via https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdbkvJznmwU&t=21 (2015, © by "KosherSwitch") and NOT "(...) in the public domain". All these proven false claims of authorship/license/etc. are covered by COM:PRP and can be extended for other uploaded files.
Regarding File:Kosher switch installed with timer.jpg: "it is own work and the image was cropped, exif data was deleted" Well, then you are able to upload the original file, or?
Gunnex (talk) 08:05, 26 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Gunnex My apologies, as I'm new to the whole Wiki scene and rules. I thought since its on youtube its released to the public domain. For File:Kosher switch installed with timer.jpg I am happy to send you the original privately for confirmation but when sharing in public I delete exif. please let me know how i can send it to you. thanks you. Hash613 (talk) 16:35, 26 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Well, just upload the original under a new file name, so we can use it as reference, if necessary. Gunnex (talk) 17:30, 26 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Gunnex Again, I'm happy to send you the original, for your own private confirmation (just tell me how to do that), but I do not like posting my photos with exif data into public sites. You're reason for deleting is ""Unlikely to be own work: small/inconsistent resolutions, missing EXIF". Do wiki rules forbid removing exif data?? But in this case, you are wrong and I respectfully request that you reverse this decision or allow me to send you the file privately (I would leave my email addr here so that you can just email me and I can reply there but I also don't want my email addr public). Thanks you.Hash613 (talk) 18:21, 26 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Hash613: the unavailability of exif data leads generally to COM:PRP, combined with the user's upload history and other (technical) issues. You uploaded 3 files = 2 were (or are about to be) deleted, because of false claim of authoship/license/etc. In other words: copyright violatons. Or stricter: criminal behaviour. Bad ratio: 66,67 %. "you can just email me" --> you got email. Gunnex (talk) 20:47, 26 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Received your email and replied. Thank you. Hash613 (talk) 15:56, 27 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Gunnex, it's all right. I am an administrator here on Commons and a member of WikiMedia Italia. The photograph comes from a joint project of WMI and "Toponomastica Femminile" (Female Toponomastic) which is an association of women who promote the knowledge of the biography of famous women of the history of Italy, and is cooperating for improving the articles related to them on it.wiki. Two weeks ago some of us of WMI and some women of the association met in Rome, including the webmaster and the authors of some photographs, for a workshop about how to upload their own material on Commons and put the appropriate licence tags on them and so on. The photographs are correctly licenced because the photographers agreed to licence their photos in cc-by-sa as stated by the website of the association. Next photographs will be uploaded on Commons first not on the website. Regards -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 18:10, 28 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Pois bem, venho me defender.

Hi @Mursillis: if that is indeed the case, please send an email to COM:OTRS and explain your situation to them, providing evidence that the copyright holder has given permission to publish the file under a free license. If everything checks out, they will restore the file, if deleted in the meantime. Note that OTRS, like Commons, is all volunteers and is understaffed and may take several weeks to process the license. Gunnex (talk) 20:32, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Copy to commons category in Arabic Wikipedia

Hi Gunnex, Thank you for your review. Is it possible to help me in a category? We have a category for pictures to move in commons in ARWIKI. I've deleted a lot of them or changed their license. But in the end, sooner or later, someone will move them into Commons. Is it possible to take a look on them and tell me if some of them can be deleted or not free at all. We don't have that expertise in ARWIKI and we are now discussing about limiting the upload to reviewers.--Helmoony (talk) 17:17, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Helmoony: Well, I can help out a bit, no problem, but my time for these tasks is quite limitated. See also the impressive talk page of a user who recently transferred a lot of files from arwiki to Commons (mostly my tags)... Or this recent DR of a arwiki based user = Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Ahmad.aea.99. But the problems are:
  1. I am getting reverted by other users when I tag copyvios in arwiki. See file history ar:ملف:Nazareth-christmas market.jpg (2012, by Jobas, small size/no exif) = grabbed & cropped + watermark removed via https://www.flickr.com/photos/mikeshehadeh/6521268785/ (2011, © All rights reserved by Mike Shehadeh). Or ar:ملف:Nazreth with pope.jpg... etc. So, why should I engage there? Will arwiki block me? See also my (ironic) comment at my local user talk, after gaining an "alert... See also this recent case. It's turning ridiculous...
  2. What [(semi-)automatic] tools arwiki offer to tag files as copyvio/no permission/no source/no license/deletion request etc.? E.g. Twinkle? Currently, I am tagging on arwiki only obvious copyright violations manually which is quite complicated for a Latin script based user from Germany :-) (actual example). (arabic script breaks all lines, see next line...)
...+40–50 % of all files in this category were probadly grabbed from Internet/social media or need more user input regarding sources/PD-status etc.. arwiki is also one of the "bad wikis" reaching deletion ratios of over 85,00 % from cross-wiki uploads --> https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T120867#2502002. I also already "cleaned" probadly hundreds of files transferred from arwiki, findable via e.g. this search. Summarizing: how do I tag locally arwiki uploads with no-permission/no source/etc. etc. or with a deletion request?
  1. ( = 3 --> arabic script breaks all sorting) "we are now discussing about limiting the upload to reviewers" --> I know that arwiki has adopted Fair use and arwiki copied all this stuff (more or less) directly from enwiki. Okay. I like the way how e.g. pt.wikipedia.org did it: they allow local uploads under a specific Fair use rationale (max resolution: < 501 px) but for (supposed) "own works" they are forcing (technically) the users to upload "their own works" image(s) directly to Commons. But... limitating uploads only for (as you said) "reviewers" (probadly/hopefully with more experience regarding copyrights) may be also a good starting point to reduce the amount of critical files from arwiki.

So... I 'll try to engage [sometimes] in files of the indicated category but... I – first – need more technical input how to tag the files locally on arwiki. Gunnex (talk) 20:53, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thank you for your long reply and the links furnished.
  1. I just opened a discussion about those images. It takes time but at the end it's gonna be quick with a consencus. The problem, from what I understood, comes from deleting pictures uploaded from palestineremembered.com. Let me some time to take a look in depth..
  1. For the semi-automatic tools. That's a big problem from small and medium non-Latin wikis. Tools are not always translated or updated for us. Even for Twinkle, we used to use it but after a bug no one was able to fix it. And now we are waiting (for years) for a geek. It's pretty difficult because in our case a need a geek knowing Arabic... To give an example to language gaps in Wikimedia, look at this task as an example. I'm gonna open again a discussion about that. There's a lot of pending discussions right now in the Arabic village pump.
  1. How do ptwiki forces users to upload free pictures on commons. Let me take a look in the upload page, .. Ok I got it, the link is quit hidden and at the end it's limited to some user groups. Yeah thank you, we have to review our upload page too.

I'm gonna contact you in few days to give you an update about what's going on. And may be then you can easily review the category. Danke. --Helmoony (talk) 15:40, 18 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Christian Ferrer: Thanks for your kind words. I am currently relativizing my further dedication in Commons because (probadly like other ex-users) "I got wasted"... Well, let's see... Gunnex (talk) 20:16, 26 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • And you're right. We are volunteer and I think an essential principle over time is "do only what you want, and do it only when you want it". It stay only to discover what you want...sometimes it's not so easy but it's essential for an extended period, really! and at the end this will help you become better. Search what your actions in Commons brings to you, but mostly you have to search what you want your actions bring you...

Photo of Moshe Ha-Elion / Please consider to add it again to the article. The photo does not violate any copyright, since we took the photo.

Hello, dear Gunnex, I don't understand why you deleted the photo of Moshe Ha-Elion in his house in Israel from the Wikipedia article "Moshe Ha-Elion". That photo was taken by my husband (Eyal Streett) and I personally asked Moshe Ha-Elion if it was OK to use it and he agreed. I don't remember if I put as a owner of the photo my name (Antonia Tejeda Barros) or my husband's (Eyal Streett), because I was new in writing an article correctly and I didn't know how to do it (I did write an article last year but didn't do it correctly and the article was deleted). Moshe Ha-Elion is an Holocaust survivor who is today 91 years old. He was 21 months in Auschwitz. He is a writer, a voice of the Shoah and a friend of ours. I don't understand why it's not OK that his picture is in his article. Please consider to add the photo as soon as possible. The photo does not violate any copyright, since we took the photo. Hello again, dear Gunnex, the same goes for all these photos. Why did you delete them? They are all correct. All the photos were taken by me with the exception of the Main Gate of Auschwitz I. I recently wrote an article about Auschwitz in a magazine and asked permission to The Auschwitz Birkenau State Museum for using that photo of the main gate of Auschwitz I. I credited it as in the article. That photo is in public domain anyway. I don't understand why did you delete it. The others photos are all taken by me (Colegio Estilo and En los Kampos de la muerte):

File:Main Gate of Auschwitz I. "Arbeit Macht Frei", 1945. Cortesy of The Auschwitz Birkenau State Museum.jpg And also:

Please consider to add all these photos as soon as possible to their articles. It was a lot of work to write these articles and these photos are necessary. The photos do not violate any copyright. @Antonia Tejeda Barros: All files were deleted per Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Antonia Tejeda Barros. You may use COM:UNDEL for an undeletion request. Note, that almost all photos were taken from social media (Facebook) and needs additionally (considering derived from artworks [indoor shots] made by other people) permission from the artists. And "(...) since we took the photo." --> who is "we"? One person holding the digicam and another person pulling the trigger?
For File:Main Gate of Auschwitz I. "Arbeit Macht Frei", 1945. Cortesy of The Auschwitz Birkenau State Museum.jpg you invented a taken date. It was taken by (so far) unknown photographer with unknown nationality "after the war" = 08.05.1945 — 28.08.2016, so the pubic domain status remains still unclear.

A intenção é qual? Campaign to report copyright violations on Commons

You wrote this back in August:

My spontaneous recommendation just to save the current situation: Cross-wiki uploads only for locally auto-confirmed users with at least +100 local edits + a campaign on local wikis (including technical improvements & instructions) how to report copyright violations on Commons.

I just saw someone complaining how "difficult" it is to report a copyright violation to Commons. I was confused, because I've had "QuickDelete" enabled for years, and with that, it's just a matter of clicking on "Report copyright violation" in the sidebar and filling in the simple form. But I noticed today that this isn't turned on by default. Do you think that could be changed?

An educational campaign doesn't require dev time, so it can be done whenever someone wants to. I can help get an announcement translated and sent to Village Pumps for hundreds of wikis. If you'd rather run a banner (like the Wiki Loves Monuments banners), then I can find people to help with that. Would you like to start that campaign? (Please {{Ping}} me.) Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 19:26, 19 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

If I have time, I can help translating this campaign into Tagalog for the Filipino community at tlwiki, tlwikibooks, tlwiktionary, pamwiki, ilowiki, cbk-zamwiki, cebwiki, and pagwiki to read. Poké95 02:59, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Whatamidoing (WMF) and Pokéfan95: Thx for your posts. FYI: I am "offline" since 31.08.2016 and currently I would say: it's not only a wiki break. So [may be sound hard considering the amount of Mbytes I wasted on this topic]: do what ever you may consider helpful. Thx. Gunnex (talk) 20:59, 21 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Deleção de arquivos

Boa noite Gunnex.

Obrigado, — Preceding unsigned comment added by Luigii (talk • contribs) 02:32, 27 December 2016 (UTC) --Luigii (talk) 02:32, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Gunnex, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. Permission for the copyright Images

Dear Sir

Thank you for the message and i shall correct myself in future. To make it truth; i didn't intentionally upload the images however it was a relevant images for the content in the wiki page leaving the copyrights, am sorry for that. Now to get permission on Copyright images, can you advice how can i get permissions from the source for the relevant images I have uploaded / in future if required to upload any further images.

Also How do i know the images are under copy right protection.

Please advice. Thank You. Ashik. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 115.249.62.130 (talk) 11:39, 24 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Can I add my Flickr images here if I am the original uploader but published them on Flickr on a different license or should I delete them there first? --The Ivory Cowboy 🤠 (talk) 06:25, 31 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@The Ivory Cowboy: Hi! Did you read COM:FLICKR? If you are the copyright owner you may set & change the license of your Flickr files to a license compatibel to COM:L and upload them to Commons. Gunnex (talk) 17:10, 2 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

João Doria Jr.

So you've been adding the category Agência Brasil related uploads affected by license change in some files, like File:João Doria Jr em reunião do PSDB.jpg, haven't you? What if I told you that the same file by the same source is available under flickr under a valid license? ([6])

I honestly wonder if you get paid to do this kind of job. Holy Goo (talk) 17:51, 3 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Good, I see you removed the category from the João Doria file. Now I need to let you know that ALL images from Agência Brasil are also on flickr. You might want me to go look for the flickr url for every single image or, more wisely, you can just delete the category since you know that all images are also on flickr. It's your choice. Which one takes the least effort and is more rational? Holy Goo (talk) 18:03, 3 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Holy Goo: Thx for the Flickr source. See Special:Diff/254055691. Me and other are aware of the problem that Agência Brasil are inconsistent in there license policy. See also advice at Category:Agência Brasil related uploads affected by license change (which is primary a maintance category, to reflect current status). You can help to clear some files if you are interested. Note that {{EBC}} is responsible also for {{TV Brasil}} which needs checks too. "since you know that all images are also on flickr --> no, I can't confirm this yet. Can you? Gunnex (talk) 18:15, 3 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I can't say I'mm 100% sure, but as far as I remember, no image has been uploaded on their website that hasn't been also uploaded on flickr. The licenses are inconsistent, but that's because very few agencies or companies take copyright laws in an extremely strict manner like people here at Commons do. They are files made by our government, it's as simple as that. Well, there is no way I can put the flickr source in every single image. It'd take forever. Even if I put the flickr source in the images that are important for me, it would already be a ton of work. Holy Goo (talk) 18:29, 3 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Holy Goo: Are you somehow trolling me? I also read your recent comments on ptwiki like "Duvido que eles serão inteligentes o suficiente para chegar a essa segunda conclusão. E depois dizem que sou nervoso" (pt:Special:Diff/49487168). Is this the trigger which already lead to an indef block ("Intimidation/harassment") here on Commons (which was cancelled later on by some individual action)?
If you want to help, check e.g. this image on related Flickr stream = File:Aloysio Nunes recebe o Xeque Abdullah Bin Sultan Al Nahyan 01.jpg. A spontaneous search at Agência Brasil Flickr stream was not successful. Try to get it – and I would be grateful. For all cases: unless we have a definitive, explicit written and/or textual, tangible evidence from a credible, verifiable source naming these files as freely licensed under a Commons compatible license, we simply cannot host them on Commons. That is not a "extremely strict manner like people here at Commons do" --> that is treating normal copyright issues, considering Wikimedia Commons as a host of material that is licensed under a free license that specifically and irrevocably allows anyone to use the material for any purpose. Unfortunately, uploads from Brazilian users are (on average) mostly critical (probadly due to education lacks regarding copyrights). See e.g. my ongoing analysis via User:Gunnex/Cross-wiki uploads from pt.wikipedia.org.
In other words, Wikimedia Commons is daily flooded by hundreds of copyright violations – and thousands of them are remaining still undetected. So, please respect the work of users (including me), which are trying to keep Wikimedia Commons as a (for everybody) useful, free licensed database of all kinds of works. Thank you very much. Gunnex (talk) 19:42, 3 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I thought you were german, but now I see you have a good knowledge of portuguese, so maybe you even live here in Brazil, I don't know. I don't like it when people stalk me on other projects, but nevermind.

Anyway, look. The problem with Commons is that people here are extremely strict. Not even american government agencies like NASA are so strict. These contradictions (files with different licenses in different sources, like in this situation) happen often here because nobody really cares about these specific details. EBC clearly doesn't mind that we use their files (they even want us to use them) because they are a government agency, and that is more than enough. Now we're having problems on the portuguese wikipedia because people here intend to delete images of our own presidents that were taken by our own government! How insane is that??

Since you admit that the majority of files uploaded here are copyvios, why be so strict on files that are NOT copyvios (like the Aloysio Nunes file)? Look, all Wikimedia projects have a very bad reputation due to unreliability, so why don't you worry about all the tons of actual copyvios and simply stop fighting over minor details? That's what gets on my nerves. Nobody really gives a damn about these details. Holy Goo (talk) 20:15, 3 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have been here on Commons for months and honestly I don't think I'll ever manage to get into the spirit of this community. It's just too much for me. Have a nice wikibreak. I'm going to take a break as well. Holy Goo (talk) 01:54, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Files page tab

Hello Gunnex, I know you likely often use reverse searching tools, and maybe EXIFs and metadatas viewers, I modified an existing script to have in each file page two links in a tab leading to [7], one link use the full resolution image address (in order to keep the EXIFs), and one link is limited to 300px thumbs (to allow reverse searches). Example with File:CAPTAIN BADR (ship, 1978). Sète cf01.jpg : full resolution and 300px thumb, from those pages you have access to a big number of tools, (including google reverse, bing, tineye...Jeffrey's Image Metadata Viewer, and many others...).

It was just for to notify that to you, if you're interested you can copy the two scripts in my Common.js. Christian Ferrer (talk) 11:03, 26 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Christian Ferrer: thx for the script --> tested, approved & looks good :-). Copyright violations

You should not get discouraged, what is happening? there is a lot of copyright violations uploaded continually, this is indeed a very hard and big work. You do a great work, but do no take that too much at heart, it is the continuity of efforts that pays. You should do less work, we need users like you, but in the continuity. That said, I was thinking this morning " it's a pity we are likely several users to check several times the same files, while at the same time some images, potential copyright violations, are never checked", as well as for the license reviews, we should have a template usable by authorized user, a template that said "no catches on the web" as soon as an authorized user made a reverse search with no results, in the purpose not to be 2, 3, or 4 users to make the same searches for a file...

Well, I think you should not get discouraged, but you do as you want, you're free of course.. :) Take care of yourself. :) Christian Ferrer (talk) 20:23, 1 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • I also take advantage of the exasperation you show in this DR to say you once again that you should accept to be administrator, you will thus have a lever of power to counter copyright violations flows. You will feel much less exasperated and victim. And you will save time both for you and for others by erasing yourself the files you have searched for and found the obvious evidence of copyright infringement.

To be honest, and sorry to be tyrannical, but if it was just me, and if I had this power, I will make you administrator without giving you a chance to say no. Christian Ferrer (talk) 06:04, 2 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hystrix (talk) 12:03, 8 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
