First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Thanks for uploading Image:Crowded House @ Live Earth Sydney.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0}} to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. --Filnik 04:00, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Giggy. Sorry, I didn't know I was not answering to you on en-wiki, maybe I didn't notice your comments somewhere in the middle of my talk page? :-/ I'll check that later. Hope you're doing great. Shouldn't your account on commons be named after some chemical compound by now? :-) Best regards, Húsönd 14:46, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just so that you know, I would absolutely love to support you, but commons has a rule that a user must have at least 250 edits. You might light to withdraw your nomination and try again in a few days. Patstuart 05:17, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

RE:RfA?

I doubt it. I've had a lot of problems with licensing and whatnot here, plus I don't have a very pretty record at en.wp. I really don't think I have the licensing knowledge required to be an admin that's helpful to the Community. An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

Giggy/Archive1, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and Commons:Deletion requests), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons @ irc.freenode.net. You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading.

Please also check or add your entry to Commons:List_of_administrators and the related lists by language and date it references...

My best wishes. Given that it was a bit less unanimous than some I'd advise you to go slowly, seek advice whenever you are in doubt, and especially, take the comments you got during the RfA on board. ++Lar: t/c 21:38, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

FlickrLickr deletions

Hi! You deleted a bunch of FlickrLickr uploaded images a while ago because the license on Flickr had changed. All of the images had the {{Flickr-change-of-license}} tag explaining the situation. Is there any other place where FlickrLickr's bot status should be mentioned, and that it does not upload copyright violations, so that this wouldn't happen with other new admins? I see it at least on Commons:Flickr images and Category:Possibly unfree Flickr images, where else did you look? Would you mind undeleteting the files that were used, and undo CommonsDelinker on all the projects where the images were used? You can compare your deletion log with CommonsDelinker's log to find the pages. Thanks. --Para 11:13, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

More thanks - equally I guess you realise why I'm not too much of a fan of "importing" en wp approaches to Commons. Most folk get along fairly well here and I guess I think most would prefer it to stay like it as well. Personally I'd not bother any more, cheers --Herby talk thyme 13:25, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
And 'cos I just found it, you did nothing wrong in my eyes (& I'm sure other would have said if it bothered them), cheers --Herby talk thyme 13:29, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I can understand it may be annoying but I have full right to comment and answer what I want if I feel that need. I didn't feel I was repeating my arguments (at least I tried to find new ways to say them in order to be more understandable). If I think an argument has a problem or no value IMO, I have the right to reply and tell my feelings. I also have the right to ask some precisions if I think it deserves some. As for the closing job of the admins, I think the templates "vk" and "vd" are self-sufficient for an overall view of the discussion. --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 16:04, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

:-P

I've joined the Admin's Cabal :-P I just wanted to say thanks to you, because the offer you made to nominate me some time ago gave me the confidence I needed to request adminship and to help out more around here. Happy uploading! --Boricuæddie 22:55, 2 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Forgive my ignorance, but how does one do this? For me, the "Move" column (on the protection page) does not let me choose which type of move protection I wish to use; it automatically chooses the same move protection as the editing protection. --Boricuæddie 23:39, 2 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nominating Flickr images for deletion

Hi, I (and we) appreciate the work you're doing, but if you're going to nominate images for deletion, please do background work on Flickr to check and see if the image is likely to be a copyright infringement or not. I've written a guide which I hope you and others will find useful here. I would be obliged if you could read through and ensure you don't inadvertently nominate high quality free images for deletion in future without being considerably more certain that the image is possibly a copyright violation. We risk upsetting photographers on Flickr when we rush to assume their work is nothing more than a screenshot they've made on their computer and in doing so, risk photographers refusing to licence their work under a suitable Creative Commons licence for us to use. Nick 00:05, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

And once again, it's complaint time

I don't think it's entirely appropriate for you to have made this revert, given it applies to you (and myself too, naturally). I think it would have been sensible to ask NishKid to remove the comment, if you felt it should have been removed, or failing that, asked for an uninvolved and impartial administrator to make the decision on removing the comment. Nick 01:58, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re:RfA?

Wow, I was not expecting this so soon! Yes, I would love to be an admin... I just hope I'm ready :)

Your nomination would truly be an honor. I look forward to helping you guys out with all the admin duties.

Thank you very very much. Rocket000 06:51, 6 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Derivate work

Hi Giggy, just a quick question. I was reviewing flickr-uploaded pictures and I found that one. You're the administrator that "approved" the picture, so that I'd like to get some advice. It seems to me that the composition of the picture consist of a large Patti Smith photograph (poster-like) and a guy sit in the forefront. Therefore, the result seems to be a derivative work of the Patti Smith picture. That is, everything depends on the status of it. Have I missed any point in the reasoning? Best regards --Ecemaml (talk to me/habla conmigo) 14:30, 10 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, as far as I understand, unless it's possible to determine the licensing status of the Patti Smith photograph, the only thing we can assure is that the photo at commons is a derivative work of a photograph without proper copyright information (that is, I think it must be deleted). Maybe we can open a deletion discussion for other people to provide further opinions... Best regards --Ecemaml (talk to me/habla conmigo) 22:48, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I don't know it's a lack of knowledge. In fact, derivative work is a specially tricky area, with sometimes quite blurred concepts. Best regards --Ecemaml (talk to me/habla conmigo) 23:04, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Giggy,

I was surprised (to say the least!) to find a deletion request closed "no consensus"... if we had this practice then we could quickly reduce the 5 month backlog. But many, many things would go on without any kind of resolution.

Have you done this for many discussions? I don't think it's a very good idea... but I would like to hear your argument for it.

cheers, pfctdayelise (说什么?) 08:48, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

But don't you think it is better to leave the discussion open so more opinions can be made, and maybe lead to a definitive argument? --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 07:59, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted record label

Hello,

It seems that you some time ago deleted a picture of a 1930s Decca record label that had been uploaded by me (Decca198.jpg) and I'm wondering why? I have contributed several other scans of 1920s and 1930s record labels to Commons so naturally I get a bit worried when one of them disappears without any questions or comments to me as the uploader. /FredrikT 09:33, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Flickr image question

Hi, Giggy. First, thanks for closing my "trusted user" request today. One quick question for you: I've gone through Category:Flickr images needing human review, and taken care of all the images there, save one. This image has had its permission reviewed by OTRS, so it's good to go. If I remove the {{FlickreviewR/reviewed-error}} tag from the image page, is the bot just going to come back and tag it again? I can't just mark it as reviewed, since the copyright on the Flickr page doesn't match the one we have here. Does that make sense? Am I just making this too complicated? Thanks for the help. Cheers! Anders Beer Wilse - deletion requests

Several pictures taken by Anders Beer Wilse (1865-1949) have been uploaded to Commons with the pd-old licence. There is no foundation for this, as he died in 1949 (not even 60 years ago).

Several of these pictures are found in Category:Anders Beer Wilse and Category:Attributed to Anders Beer Wilse. There might be others, not categorized in the same way.

Thanks for the comment - I have taken a look and deleted some images as appropriate. Cheers, Giggy 09:26, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The deletion of those images are plainly wrong. Plase check out Norwegian law on this matter before you delete any other photos. [2] Jeblad 16:32, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Giggy, such information was already in the image page (I mean, I did my homeworks before deleting the image :-)). However, it does not invalidate the reasoning in the deletion request (that is, that even if from the National Archives, there is not enough information to claim {{PD-USgov}}). However, if you, being a more experienced admin, think it's enough, feel free to undelete and close the deletion request as "kept". No problem from my side :-) Best regards and merry Christmas --Ecemaml (talk to me/habla conmigo) 00:25, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Possibility

Most DYK hooks don't have images. One idea would be to Commons protect a few of them at a time for about 72 hours. When the DYK hook is ready for selection, the image is already protected at commons. If one does it every 3-4 days (twice a week), that's not too often. However, doing it that infrequently might mean protecting 15 images at each setting.

I'm glad people were not too mean here. At English Wikipedia, an RFA of a user with no experience, even if an admin at Polish Wikipedia or Portuguese Wikipedia might get a snowball of nasty opposes and strong opposes. Archtransit 18:00, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the welcome. I thought that a bot handled the welcomes, though... Nousernamesleftcopper, not wood 01:32, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Aha. Yeah, I fixed it about fifteen seconds after you responded on my talk page. When I saw the raw signature, I ambled over to preferences and I saw the "Raw Signature" thing. I got pretty confused; I was mixing up checking the box and not checking the box. It took me about ten seconds to realized that I was mixing them up. ;) Nousernamesleftcopper, not wood 01:46, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Liftarn

So Liftarn is free to use Wikimedia Commons as a platform for the dissemination of hate-mongering and bigotry (as has already been complained about by a number of people with respect to the bigoted hate-mongering Carlos Latuff cartoons), but I'm not allowed to point out that Liftarn is using Wikimedia Commons as a platform for the dissemination of hate-mongering and bigotry? Thanks for clarifying this matter!

P.S. I'm afraid it's a little too late to ask me to simply "assume good faith", when Liftarn has gone to great lengths to commit elaborate sequences of actions (such as in connection with Image_talk:Gathering_of_eagles.jpg) which have pretty much succeeded in convincing me of his bad faith...
