Structured Data - early depicts testing

The Structured Data on Commons development team has the very basic version of depicts statements available for early testing on Test-Commons. You can add very basic depicts statements to the file page by going into the new “Structured Data” tab located below the "Open in Media Viewer button." You can use the Latest Files link in the left side nav bar to select existing images, or use the UploadWizard to upload new ones to test with (although those images won’t actually show up on the site). The test site is not a fully functional replica of Commons, so there may be some overall problems in using the site, but you should be able to get a general idea of what using the feature is like.

Early next week I will call for broad, community-wide testing of the feature similar to what we did for Captions, with instructions for testing, known bugs, and a dedicated space to discuss the feature as well as a simple help page for using statements. Until then, you're welcome to post on the SDC talk page with what you might find while testing depicts.

Thanks in advance for trying it out, you'll be hearing more from me next week. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 21:59, 21 March 2019 (UTC)

Thank you

Category discussion warning

Category:Taken_with_SBIG_STL-8300 has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Structured Data - testing qualifiers for depicts

As you might have seen, testing is underway for adding qualifiers to depicts statements. If you have not left feedback already, the Structured Data on Commons development team is very interested in hearing about your experience using qualifiers on the file page and in the UploadWizard. To get started you can visit Test-Commons and chose a random file to test out, or upload your own file to try out the UploadWizard. Questions, comments, and concerns can be left on the Structured data talk page and the team will address them as best as they can. Thank you for your time. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 19:08, 11 June 2019 (UTC)

Structured Data on Commons - IRC office hours this week, 18 July

The Structured Data team is hosting an IRC office hour this week on Thursday, 18 July, from 17:00-18:00 UTC. Joining information as well as date and time conversion is available on Meta. Potential topics for discussion are the testing of "other statements", properties that may need to be created for Commons on Wikidata soon, plans for the rest of SDC development, or whatever you might want to discuss. The development team looks forward to seeing you there. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 18:51, 16 July 2019 (UTC)

Structured Data - testing other statements

You can now test using other statements for structured data on the file page on Test-Commons. Some datatypes are not yet available, such a coordinates, but further support will be extended soon. You can find more information about testing on the SDC talk page. The team looks forward to your feedback. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 16:41, 24 July 2019 (UTC)

Structured Data - computer-aided tagging

The development team is starting work on one of the last planned features for SDC v1.0, a lightweight tool to suggest depicts tags for images. I've published a project page for it, please have a look. I plan to share this page with everyone on Commons much more broadly in the coming days. The tool has been carefully designed to try to not increase any workload on Commons volunteers; for starters, it will be opt-in for auto-confirmed users only and will not generate any sort of backlog here on Commons. Additionally, the tool is highly privacy-minded for the contributors and publicly-minded for the third party being used, in this case Google. The implementation and usage notes contain more information about these and other potential concerns as a starting place. It's really important that the tool is implemented properly from the start, so feedback is welcome. Questions, comments, concerns are welcome on the talk page and I will get answers as quickly as possible as things come up. On the talk page you can also sign up to make sure you're a part of the feedback for designs and prototype testing. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 17:57, 17 September 2019 (UTC)

Camera categories

Thanks for cleaning up Category:Taken with Canon IXY 310. Is the idea that the 'camera' categories are a separate hierarchy to the 'taken with' categories? That makes sense to me, but it seems there's some inconsistencies (e.g. Category:Photos taken with Canon Digital IXUS is in Category:Canon Digital IXUS). — Sam Wilson ( TalkContribs ) … 05:08, 19 September 2019 (UTC)

Yeah, the "taken with" hierarchy is separate. It seems inconsistent because Canon IXY 310 is a film APS camera model, not digital. --ghouston (talk) 05:12, 19 September 2019 (UTC)
Sure, that makes sense. Thanks. — Sam Wilson ( TalkContribs ) … 05:23, 19 September 2019 (UTC)

Structured Data - computer-aided tagging designs

I've published a design consultation for the computer-aided tagging tool. Please look over the page and participate on the talk page. If you haven't read over the project page, it might be helpful to do so first. The tool will hopefully be ready by the end of this month (October 2019), so timely feedback is important. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 18:09, 9 October 2019 (UTC)

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Deletion of / File: Knox Ramsey-68.jpg

Dear Ghouston,

I am the son of Knox Wagner Ramsey, Sr. and just noticed the picture I had uploaded some time ago had been deleted because of what appears to be insufficient photo credits. This particular photo is in my dad's photo album and after looking at the back of the photo there is no reference to the photographer nor processor. Is there anyway this photo can be used on my dad's Wikipedia link (Knox_Ramsey)? If so, how should the credits be worded?

Thanks, K. Wagner Ramsey, Jr. Wramseyjr (talk) 16:20, 19 November 2019 (UTC)

Please do not make any edits to this archive. You can read the deletion policy or ask a question at the Village pump. If the circumstances surrounding this file have changed in a notable manner, you may re-nominate this file or ask for it to be undeleted.

File:Knox Ramsey-68.jpg "Own work" probably only applies to the 2009 scan. The original photo apparently dates from 1953 and no source or coypright info is given. --ghouston (talk) 04:12, 15 January 2017 (UTC)

Deleted: per nomination. --Sealle (talk) 12:20, 22 January 2017 (UTC)

@Wramseyjr: when the photographer is unknown, copyright law generally sets a fixed term for the length of the copyright. But the exact rules vary depending on the country, and may also depend on whether the photo has been published or not. For the United States, if the photo has never been published, then {{PD-US-unpublished}} will apply 120 years after the photo was taken, which for a 1953 photo would be after 2073. --ghouston (talk) 22:46, 19 November 2019 (UTC)

Commons - Media Search

Greetings,

The Structured Data team is working on an alternative, image-focused prototype for media search on Commons. The prototype uses categories, structured data as well as wikitext from Commons, and Wikidata to find its results. The development team would like your feedback on the prototype, as they are looking to work to further enhance the search experience on Commons. If you have a moment, please look over the project page set up on Commons to find a link to the prototype and leave your feedback on the talk page. Thanks for your time, I'll be posting message similar to this one to other pages on Commons. The team is looking forward to reading what you think. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 20:47, 28 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi! What do you think next step is? In Commons:Village_pump/Proposals#Status_on_accepting_PDM_as_a_license I mean. --MGA73 (talk) 18:57, 16 August 2020 (UTC)

Looking a the archives, the normal process seems to be that it either gets closed or archived. Either way, it seems like the support outweighs the opposition. --ghouston (talk) 00:30, 17 August 2020 (UTC)
Great. But a few changes are needed. We need to update af few pages and we should find out if Flickr review bot should review the files or if we need a 2 step procedure like the Category:Flickr public domain images needing human review (I mean like a human should just check it and verify that it is not an obvious copyvio). --MGA73 (talk) 05:24, 18 August 2020 (UTC)
The pages can be updated once the discussion is closed. The review bot won't be able to do any more than it does already, which is to verify that the file on Flickr had the PDM applied at the particular date. It can't establish whether the Flickr user is the copyright holder. Adding the new template would presumably avoid the process of deletion after seven days, since it would count as a license template. --ghouston (talk) 05:35, 18 August 2020 (UTC)

Brilliant. The idea of rejecting Public Domain tag as "not free" defied belief... but sadly we have been avoiding logic and supported proponents of doublethink to allow an impossible thing to exist. So pleased to see that you have used the power of consensus and the slow bulldozer of common sense to push back silliness that was beginning to sacrifice our project to the very minor deity of small print. Well done and thank you. (this statement is in the Public Domain) Victuallers (talk) 14:32, 2 September 2020 (UTC)

Commons - Media Sarch, new feedback round

Greetings,

I'm following up on a message from earlier in the year about the prototype development for Special:MediaSearch. Based on community feedback, the Structured Data team has developed some new features for Special:MediaSearch and are seeking another round of comments and discussions about the tool. Commons:Structured_data/Media_search is updated with details about the new features plus some other development information, and feedback is welcome on Commons talk:Structured_data/Media_search. Media Search works in any language, so the team would especially appreciate input around support for languages other than English. I look forward to reading about what you think. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 20:05, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

--GRuban (talk) 22:18, 17 November 2020 (UTC)

@GRuban: Thanks, there were some categories and files that were in the wrong category initially: Category:Actors from the United States was previously intended for male actors, but we've moved it to Category:Male actors from the United States to reduce such confusion and make it compatible with the English Wikipedia categories. I've fixed some but there are quite a few countries and I haven't gotten around to all of them. --ghouston (talk) 02:21, 18 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi

Hi there, how are you? As you are the one who developed male actor cats (something with which I am d'acord from the very beginning) can you please kindly revert the insistent categorization mistake at Category:Actresses from Turkey? Thanks a lot. --E4024 (talk) 16:41, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

That it shouldn't be in Category:Performing artists from Turkey because it's overcat? Done. --ghouston (talk) 21:46, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

Actors

Hi. You've been doing this tedious and great work about actors, actresses etc since some time but I understand some WD trick is about to destroy your efforts. Look at Category:Kyōko Fukada: She is in Category:Actresses from Japan and Category:Female vocalists from Japan, but somehow also appears under Category:Actors and Category:Vocalists! As she has already been added to Category:Female models from Japan, I wonder why she does not appear also under Category:Models (people) or Category:Female models automatically... --E4024 (talk) 03:51, 17 January 2021 (UTC)

It's strange, but it's coming from the P2031 values, work period (start), I think. It would be better to ask at Template_talk:Wikidata_Infobox, where there's already an unanswered question about work period (end). --ghouston (talk) 05:23, 17 January 2021 (UTC)

Geo Swan (talk) 02:35, 23 April 2021 (UTC)

FYI. Bidgee (talk) 02:42, 5 April 2022 (UTC)

Could you please explain...

You merged Category:Files from William Murphy Flickr stream into Category:Photographs by William Murphy on the premise they were duplicate categories.

Category:Files from William Murphy Flickr stream was two years older than Category:Photographs by William Murphy, When two files or categories are genuine duplicates, don't we usually keep the older one?

Pairs of categories like this aren't always duplicates. If a photographer uploaded images to flickr, and to other sites, like panoramio, then shouldn't a category like Category:Photographs by William Murphy be the parent category to both Category:Files from William Murphy Flickr stream and Category:Files from William Murphy Panoramio stream. And, if that photographer is also a commons contributor, who has directly uploaded some images to the commons, then those directly uploaded images, wouldn't they also belong in Category:Photographs by William Murphy?

In general, I don't think one can assume that categories like these two ARE duplicates. Are you aware of a tool that can check to see if all the images in a category came from flickr? I know of no such tool.

I think we need a bot to sort this out. I would suggest that, if that bot determines all the images in the two categories are from flickr, then Category:Files from William Murphy Flickr stream should be kept. If only some of the images are from flickr, then the two categories are not genuine duplicates, and both should be kept, with Category:Photographs by William Murphy being the parent category, while also containing the non-flickr images.

Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 04:37, 29 April 2022 (UTC)

This was from 2016, so I can't say anything about why I did it, since I don't remember it. A single category Photographs by William Murphy would be sufficient to group all the photos by this one photographer, if some of them were published at Flickr first, and some not, would anyone really care? --ghouston (talk) 08:24, 29 April 2022 (UTC)

BotAdventures problem

Hi. Can you check this edit of your bot, where category broke categorization template. Same thing happened to some other uploads of same user, as i can see. --Smooth O (talk) 11:26, 12 May 2022 (UTC)

@Smooth O: Thanks, yes, there's a surprising bug that has only shown up now after the bot has been running for years. If a page has no existing categories, the bot will add the new category at the end. But it has been finding the position of the end of the page by taking the length of the lower-case version of the page. In this case, the Unicode for the Turkish characters gets shorter in lower-case, e.g., İÇİN changes to için. Actually, it may be possible for the problem to occur when the page already has some categories. It may be a bit tricky to fix, too. --ghouston (talk) 10:53, 13 May 2022 (UTC)
Fixed. --ghouston (talk) 11:22, 14 May 2022 (UTC)

You wrote: Possible violation of child porn policy. What does that mean? As far as I can tell, we don’t have such a policy (aside from reporting suspected child porn to the WMF legal e-mail address), which is something I have been complaining about recently. It doesn’t seem right that we simply delete child porn as ‘low quality’ (after waiting nearly 6 days) and don’t follow up on it. Brianjd (talk) 13:28, 4 January 2023 (UTC)

I only vaguely remember this, since it was over five years ago. I think it was due to it being against the Wikimedia Foundation terms of use, which Commons has to follow. I guess I didn't find any way to report it specifically, so assumed a regular deletion request was the way to go. --ghouston (talk) 06:38, 5 January 2023 (UTC)
That makes sense. It seems like things have not improved since then (I have seen many recent deletion requests for child porn). For future reference, see meta:Child protection#Reporting concerns. Brianjd (talk) 10:11, 5 January 2023 (UTC)
