Wayne_Hsiung.jpg[edit]

I don't understand why you're taking off photos from DxE's site? Jackson5Dr (talk) 18:18, 3 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You are claiming photos that I took myself as your own, editing them and adding titles that violate Wikipedia's Biography of Living Persons policy. I have reported your edits to the BLP noticeboard; see the Direct Action Everywhere talk page. Funcrunch (talk) 18:40, 3 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I've renamed "Wayne_Hsiung_Cult_Leader.jpg" to "Wayne_Hsiung.jpg". As the photographer, would you be willing to license File:Wayne_Hsiung.jpg, which now has an appropriate filename, under a Creative Commons license so that Commons may use it? Please note that agreeing to such a license would permit people like Jackson5Dr to make derivatives of that image, so the license does have disadvantages. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 19:12, 3 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes - All of the photos I've taken that are on the DxE web site (from which the photo in question was downloaded) were intended to be shared freely, with attribution. But from what I understand the CC license still does not permit making derivatives that are clearly defamatory? Funcrunch (talk) 19:16, 3 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Also - Even though I have no objection to this photo (without the defamatory text) being on Commons, I would rather upload it myself in a higher resolution. Funcrunch (talk) 19:34, 3 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You retain the right to integrity of your work (i.e. people shouldn't corrupt the message you're trying to convey), but you also "to the extent possible", "waive and/or agree not to assert any such rights".

I also agree that it would be a good idea to delete the image so that you can reupload it. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 19:58, 3 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm letting you know that all three files have been deleted:
--Michaeldsuarez (talk) 11:56, 4 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Funcrunch. Were you at the Friday WMF-15, or the Saturday WMF-15? I missed Saturday. Can you kindly tag your WMF-15 images with your new Pax category so I can see them? Cheers! {{u|Checkingfax}} {Talk} 05:57, 29 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Checkingfax - I was at the Saturday Jan 16 meetup. I just created a subcategory Category:Photos by Pax Ahimsa Gethen and put my WMF-15 pix in it. (There are others as well at Category:Wikipedia 15 in San Francisco.) I'll add the rest of my pix to that category after I 1) get some sleep and 2) find a good tool to add categories in bulk rather than one photo at a time. Funcrunch (talk) 07:01, 29 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome, Funcrunch. When you wake up ... at the Commons there are some category gadgets. Cat-a-lot might be helpful. I have it enabled but have not used it yet. I use Hot-Cat which speeds things up, but is not a batch category adder. There are some other gadgets there. Be sure to save your edits if you tick off some gadgets. Pete has a lot of experience on the Commons. Cheers! {{u|Checkingfax}} {Talk} 07:27, 29 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - Cat-a-lot was somewhat useful, but didn't work on my full list of images, so I still had to do a lot of clicking. I noted some other users complained about that, so hopefully the author (or someone else) will add that functionality. Funcrunch (talk) 17:41, 29 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Well hello -- I was just coming with another, somewhat-related suggestion. In answer to the above...I am surprised that Cat-a-lot doesn't work on that list, but you're quite right...I'm not seeing its link on that list myself, either. There are other ways to "skin a cat" (ha ha), one of my favorite tools for automated tasks is Auto Wiki Browser -- it only runs on Windows, but it's a super useful program. I can show it to you at a WikiSalon some time if you'd like.
I also wanted to point out something you can add to make the attribution on photos more clear. Look at the top of the license box on this image for an example -- see how it says clearly, in large type, "Attribution: Pete Forsyth, Wiki Strategies"? You can do that on all your images. I trust you can figure out the syntax yourself; but if you want to apply that to a backlog of past uploads, that's another case where AWB can come in very handy. -Pete F (talk) 01:15, 30 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Pete - I'm pretty allergic to Windows, but maybe I'll find another utility that works on the web or Mac.
Re attribution, from my experience as a pro photog many people ignore it, sadly, even if it's prominently stated. And those who do understand the importance of attribution will find and honor it without me having to make it (more) obvious. I've been planning a blog entry on that... Anyway, I just wanted to put all of my photos in one catalog, at Checkingfax's suggestion. Funcrunch (talk) 01:25, 30 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I can't fault you for your Windows allergy; but this is an unfortunate area where there really is no comparable tool for any other platform. The software is open source, but it also relies very heavily on Windows' .NET technology, so it can't easily be recompiled for other platforms. (Heh, funny how I seem to be talking like I'm a programmer...I'm really not, but I have explored this issue very carefully, because I also would very much like to see it on other platforms.)
I have seen plenty of faulty attribution, but I have definitely noticed a difference with this. Some people do want to do the right thing, and it can be worthwhile to make it easy for them to do so. If you'd like, I'd be happy to just run AWB on your behalf and change the license template on each of your photos -- now that they're all in a category, it's super easy with AWB. Or, if you really don't care, I'll drop it! -Pete F (talk) 01:31, 30 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Let me read more up on it myself and think about it. I appreciate the offer of help. :-) Funcrunch (talk) 01:33, 30 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good...and in that case, you'll want a link that actually works! w:en:Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser -Pete F (talk) 01:43, 30 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Funcrunch, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Category discussion warning

Amos Brown has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

I asked a question, in good faith, but your friend Fae refuses to engage in any dialogue when my name appears. Since you clearly have given this issue much thought, I would appreciate your opinion on the questions I asked. Perhaps you could also refer to any style guides that might be useful as links. Thank you. -- Colin (talk) 12:33, 6 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Fæ is not my friend; we are acquainted on Wikimedia/Wikipedia but have never met (outside of a virtual meeting). Regardless, I'm not interested in participating in your conversation right now, and Fæ is not obligated to either. Funcrunch (talk) 16:03, 6 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States – Results![edit]

This user participated in Wiki Loves Monuments 2017.

Want to show your participation in Wiki Loves Monuments 2017? Add {{User Wiki Loves Monuments 2017}} to your userpage!

Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States during the month of October! The United States contest saw over 1,400 people (the most of any nation this year) contribute over 8,000 great photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the United States and its territories. Hundreds of these photos are already being used to illustrate pages on various Wikimedia projects.

We're excited to announce that our national judging process has concluded, and that we have selected the winners of Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States! These photos are recognized for their photographic quality, artistic merit, and their encyclopedic value as illustrations of unique historical sites. We were amazed by all of the uploads, and regret only being able to formally recognize the top 10. That being said – congratulations to our national winners and their amazing shots! Our 10 winners will be sent to the international Wiki Loves Monuments jury, who will then select the winners of the international contest. If you're interested in seeing the winners of the other national contests, you may do so at Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 winners.

If you would like to view all the photos submitted for the U.S. this year, you may do so here.

Finally, we have also created a feedback form for all U.S. participants to fill out. The survey is optional and anonymous, and only takes a minute or two – we hope to use the feedback to organize better events in the future!

A quick thank you to our national jury, as well as Commons editors who have helped categorize and place photos for the event. And finally, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments and helping to preserve our history through photography - we hope to see you again for future Commons photography events!

Re the San Francisco Trans March[edit]

I was wondering if you would be uploading more photos from the event. Also, did you attend the Pride Parade as well? Will you be uploading the photos soon? Could you please ping me as soon as you do? (this brought me here).

Hi @Acagastya: I'm not planning to upload more Trans March photos to Commons besides the ones I already have. I did take some photos at yesterday's Pride Parade, and should be processing those in a day or two. Funcrunch (talk) 13:54, 25 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That would be great. I really hope you upload them as soon as possible so that I can write a photo essay on enwn.

Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States – Back for 2018![edit]

This user participated in Wiki Loves Monuments 2018.

Want to show your participation in Wiki Loves Monuments 2018? Add {{User Wiki Loves Monuments 2018}} to your userpage!

Hello! Last year you contributed to Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States. Thanks to people like you it was a great success, with over 1,400 people contributing over 8,000 photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the country. Hundreds of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, improving our open knowledge about United States history, culture, and heritage.

I'm pleased to say that we're back this year with Wiki Loves Monuments 2018 in the United States, and I'd like to welcome you to participate once again in the event. Check out our updated event page for more information. The event runs similar to last year with some small but exciting changes: improved state guides, an interactive map, and a larger prize pool! Like last year, you'll be able to upload your photos of any registered historical site in the United States through the end of September (even if the photos were taken before this month).

Once again, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2017, and we hope to see you again in this year's event! If you'd like to respond to this message directly, please do so on on my talk page. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 11:45, 11 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
