Problem with the illustrations from Adventures in Toyland

It appears this is actually a British work, and the illustration were done by British illustrator Alice B. Woodward, who died in 1951. Please see Commons:Deletion requests/Alice B. Woodward. Lupo 14:59, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

deprecated function in your monobook.js

Dear user, I noticed that you use the includePage function in your monobook.js page.

This function is now obsolete, as the importScript function was introduced with rev:35064 to the MediaWiki Javascript core library wikibits.js. It also keeps track of already imported files.

To allow us to remove includePage from Mediawiki:Common.js I'd kindly ask you to replace its use with importScript (same syntax!). Thanks! --Dschwen 17:03, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Commons Scope - Pdf and Djvu files

I have added some text dealing with these based on the discussion on the talk page. Users are by no means unanimous about which files should be allowed, and I have tried to follow the majority opinion. Thus, the suggestion is that if a Pdf or Djvu file is educationally useful even to a single other Wiki it should be kept. Would you like to comment before this page goes live? Please do so at the bottom of the talk page. Regards, --MichaelMaggs (talk) 21:53, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Hello, FloNight!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Category intersections

Hi. Thanks for your work! Note: When you create new categories like Category:Nude women with braids, they can be intersections of more than one existing category-- in this example, it is not only a subcategory of nude women, but also of braids. I've added the other relevent category for you. Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 08:26, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Thank you! I couldn't agree with you more on the comments you made. I was starting to wonder what planet I was living on, several of the editor's who have made remarks so far do not seem to be living in the same world as the rest of us. I've been starting similar discussions at Village pump such as Commons:Village_pump#Explicit_Images_and_Child_Protection_and_Obscenity_Enforcement_Act and started revising the once dead Commons:Sexual content. Once again, I appreciate your support. - Stillwaterising (talk) 21:39, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

Hi FloNight. I am wanting to add [1] to Commons and then to Wikisource. Sort of new in Commons and curious if I need to download each image to my computer or can I download the whole thing? Thanks much. Daytrivia (talk) 12:58, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

Sorry I was slow to reply, I was traveling this past week. From your contribution it looks like you are already working on "An Old Sweetheart of Mine". Did you figure out the way that you want to do it? There are several different ways. FloNight♥♥♥ 00:24, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

File:African Cemetery No. 2, Lexington, Kentucky, marker.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Barnstar

Thanks a lot !
I truly appreciate you helping to categorize nudes and sexually provocative images so that people can find images specific to their search without being exposed to images that they would not anticipate > Yes, it's exaclty one of the two sides of my efforts. In the past I added categories (objects for instance) to nude or partially nude pictures because I presuppose(d) that anyone who looks for pictures of any object (or subject) has the right to find easily any picture, include nude ones. But I have been reverted many times (including by you) with the fair argument that we have to prevent unexpected viewing of nudity. Therefore the only consensual solution was to created many (many many) subcats. I'm glad you like and support my efforts ! --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 15:33, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
PS: I think there should be the same logic with violence. I won't do the same job because I tend to be nauseous with violence, but I am actually part of the people who would appreciate not to be unexpectedly exposed to violent pictures (e.g. blooded corpses, beheaded people...)

A barnstar for you!

The Civility Barnstar
"The Civility Barnstar may be awarded to any user who excels at maintaining civility in the midst of contentious situations." Indeed. Especially when dealing with others who contend with issues for which many have strong opinions. You make it clear where any productive discussions should start from. Your words cut through the rhetoric . Rather than burn bridges, you build them. And your calm demeanor puts those who lose their head at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to influencing public opinion. – Adrignola talk 01:27, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for some of your recent statements at Commons. You are defending ideas that should be common sense, but many people are too afraid to say it. Ottava Rima (talk) 17:04, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

Category discussion warning

Category:Checkered_skirt,_upskirt has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
